- 0:05Amazon Echo Smarter or more irritating?
- 0:08Welcome to Mark and Pete, where we're looking at how AI may be
- 0:12getting more of a foothold into your homes.
- 0:17This is Mark and Pete, 2 blokes with half an opinion.
- 0:20Now here's our first thought. The echo of irritation when
- 0:26smart technology talks back and becomes extremely chatty as it
- 0:31responses get harder to track, it'll drive you abundantly
- 0:36Batty. Oh yes.
- 0:38The very idea of technology talking back, well, some people
- 0:42like the idea. It can offer many, many good
- 0:46insights to knowledge, but at the same time, if it's getting
- 0:50smarter, it can talk you down. Mr. Pete, I wonder what you
- 0:55think about the idea of Amazon's Echoes becoming even smarter.
- 0:59And this of course is due to AI powered upgrade.
- 1:03So what say you about this new technology innovation?
- 1:07Well, it's interesting with such innovations where that seems
- 1:12such a good idea in the 1st place and they get more
- 1:14irritating. I guess lots of AI interfaces
- 1:18are like that and computer interfaces that little helpers
- 1:22used to have, for example, in in Word and other programs on your
- 1:27computer to start with seem cheeky and amusing little paper
- 1:31clip if you remember and then then got then got more
- 1:35irritating. So it's making making however AI
- 1:42responses in this smart speaker. It reminds me of a character in
- 1:48Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where in this satire of
- 1:54science fiction they had robots who had genuine people
- 1:58personalities. And the the one that is Greeks
- 2:02are heroes has real issues with his personality and is almost
- 2:09suicidally depressed the whole time.
- 2:11So as soon as you introduce something human from the point
- 2:15of view of of computing, or in this case AI, which you know
- 2:19wasn't around when that a parody was written, you introduce all
- 2:24the difficulties of. Humans.
- 2:28Into something that you thought had stopped that interaction.
- 2:31So you've brought back in all the issues that you know that
- 2:36were there from human interaction and put it into in
- 2:39this case your smart, your smart speaker.
- 2:41So I'm not sure it's a good idea.
- 2:45Well, the Alexa Plus turns the digital assistant into a more
- 2:49chatty device. So that's the idea.
- 2:52So effectively, the idea is being more proactive in its
- 2:55responses. Now, there has been criticism of
- 2:57the Echo in the sense that when it was first launched, yes,
- 3:02there was uncertainty. Yes, there were technical
- 3:04issues, OK, the technology has become more advanced and more
- 3:07reliable. But what a lot of users are
- 3:10really saying is, is that they expect this to be a little bit
- 3:13more polarising. Effectively they want to have a
- 3:16more relaxed and enjoying the the conversation rather than
- 3:20it's something that could be more disconcerting or irritable.
- 3:24And I suppose it really it comes back to the consumer.
- 3:27What does the consumer want? Because at the end of the day,
- 3:32as you say, the more personality you bring into a device, it
- 3:36could be that the device could be quite exuberant, quite
- 3:40lively, or to your other point, which it could be quite
- 3:42depressing. And it could, it could seem that
- 3:46actually even a bright sunny day could seem like a dismal
- 3:51washout. But I think that if you were to
- 3:54buy one, if you were to buy, I don't know whether you've got
- 3:57one, but if you're thinking of buying one, well, how would you
- 3:59want your personality to come through this device?
- 4:02What sort of person would you want it to be?
- 4:06Well, I'd like someone obviously like yourself, Mark.
- 4:09So. Well, of course.
- 4:11You know, it's slightly acerbic sarcastic comments, but possibly
- 4:16more knowledgeable than you. If, if that were possible,
- 4:19surely not I, I, I wouldn't want a sort of bland personality.
- 4:25It's interesting. You should, you should ask that
- 4:26because there's already a move to have AI produce, you know,
- 4:31fake friends or or girlfriends or boyfriends for people so who
- 4:36will answer questions and talk as though they're real.
- 4:38If you've got a smart speaker in your room as though they're
- 4:41afraid you come home for work and the smart speaker says, so
- 4:44how was your day? You end up talking.
- 4:46You sudden. You suddenly removed the need
- 4:49for real friends. Well, there you go.
- 4:53Well, what's interesting is controversial take so well, yes,
- 4:57but here here's here's something else which sort of shows you the
- 4:59the level of interactions. Now Amazon claims that 52% of
- 5:03the UK has tried the Echo head and there have been 114 billion
- 5:10interactions. And that's just Mr. Pete saying,
- 5:13no, that's not what I want. That's basically since 2023.
- 5:21Now, of course, that's a lot of interactions, billions of
- 5:23interactions that are going on on an hour by hour, day by day,
- 5:27week by week basis. Now I will say though, that
- 5:31what's interesting here is the other side to this, which is the
- 5:33cost. Now an Alexa Plus can come in at
- 5:36just under £20. Yes, £19.99 a month, Yeah, a
- 5:40month, yes. Or or be free for those with an
- 5:43Amazon Prime account. Now when you think about this
- 5:47though, Mr. P, we do tend to sort of think about the the, you
- 5:51know, we like the idea of technology enhancing our daily
- 5:54lives, our household environments.
- 5:56But there is that other side to it is taking it on the serial
- 5:59side that you could end up spending an awful lot of money
- 6:02on something that maybe you could get just by browsing the
- 6:05Internet or just reading a book. What do you think?
- 6:12Yes, I think, Mr. Mark that this the the use of AI and the use of
- 6:21the use of technology of of different sorts.
- 6:24You know, search engines on ebooks, all these different
- 6:29replacements for things like chatting with friends, talking
- 6:33with your husband and wife, reading a reading a real book,
- 6:38going out to see a play, enjoying some live music.
- 6:43To me they don't seem like improvements.
- 6:45They seem like a flattening out and making bland of real
- 6:50interactions and real life. Well, yes, well, here we go.
- 6:56So, listeners, what do you think about this technology
- 6:59innovation? But more importantly, if you've
- 7:02got an Alexa, why not ask it? What do you think of the Mark
- 7:07and Pete podcast show?
