Transcript
- 0:00Good evening I'm Dipam, and welcome to the start of your
- 0:02sporting weekend with myself and and Nigel.
- 0:05It's the PCR Sports Show, your weekly roundup of everything
- 0:09local and regional as far as sports goes.
- 0:11And we've got some wonderful guests in this evening from the
- 0:14newest boxing gym in the city, the Wolves Den.
- 0:17We have club captain Liam, Liam Huntley and former Team GB and
- 0:21pro boxer Shona Whitwell as well.
- 0:23So a great show to look forward to this evening as they'll be
- 0:26telling us about their careers in boxing and the new facility
- 0:30in Yaxley. But as always let's get started
- 0:33with this week's headlines and and Nige hasn't for us this
- 0:35week. Hello Nige.
- 0:36Jody. I'm very well, thank you.
- 0:37How are you? Very well.
- 0:38Thank you, Sir. What's been going on this week?
- 0:40OK, we'll start with Porsche. They play their first home game
- 0:43of the new season tomorrow against highly fancied Luton
- 0:46Townside that were in the Premier League just two years
- 0:49ago. Despite taking the lead at
- 0:51Cardiff in the season opener last weekend, they ended up
- 0:54going down to 1 so manager Darren Ferguson will be looking
- 0:57forward some points from the Western Home stadium tomorrow.
- 1:01It's another lunchtime kick off against the Hatters, who will be
- 1:04fresh from an opening day win over AFC Wimbledon at Kenworth
- 1:08Rd. Pasha is still without
- 1:10goalkeeper Alex Bass due to injury and defender Sam Hughes
- 1:14is still out with an Achilles injury.
- 1:16Otherwise, Pasha is starting to see an end to their mini injury
- 1:19crisis with Oscar Valin and Bradley Ihorn Vien both
- 1:24recovering from Knox and Will Blackmore back in contention.
- 1:29Peterborough Sports across the city then the Peterborough
- 1:32second team opened their National League Division 1 N
- 1:35campaign with a tricky tie away at Chester.
- 1:39The Cheshire outfit are fancied by many for promotion this
- 1:42season but sports owner Tim Woodward said on the PCR Sports
- 1:46Show only a couple of weeks ago that he fancied getting a result
- 1:49in the opener. The PCR Sports Show caught up
- 1:52with joint manager Michael Gash this afternoon and he reported
- 1:56that new signing Shaquille Coulthurst is out of the game
- 2:00tomorrow after limping off in the pre season game at Stamford.
- 2:04Club captain Mark Jones is 5050 but otherwise everyone is in
- 2:09contention. Other than that, 2 new signings
- 2:12for the Turbines this week. Former Barnsley payers Josiah
- 2:15Dyer and Charlie Hickingbottom have joined the club as they
- 2:19make a bid for the playoffs for the first time in their history.
- 2:23Women's rugby and only two weeks to wait now for the start of the
- 2:27Women's Rugby World Cup held in England.
- 2:30Of course, if you haven't got tickets for England's opener
- 2:33against the USA, then the next best place to be is down at the
- 2:36Peterborough Rugby Club where they'll be showing the game
- 2:39live. Doors open at 7:00, is totally
- 2:41free to get in, the bar will be open and there will be food
- 2:45available. We're going to share a post with
- 2:48AQR code on the PCR Sports Show Facebook page, so pop along
- 2:53there and you'll be able to scan that code and pre book your
- 2:58food. And we'll have coach Peter Frost
- 3:01and player Emma Harley talking about the local women's rugby
- 3:05scene and that World Cup tournament on the 12th of
- 3:08September on our show. So make sure you don't miss that
- 3:11one. Phantoms News and the son of
- 3:14city legend Doug McEwan has returned to the club.
- 3:17Forward Corey McEwan has rejoined after spells in Swindon
- 3:21and Telford. The message to fans after re
- 3:24signing was simply I'm back. Another familiar face is Ralph
- 3:29Saranis who has also rejoined from Berkshire Bees.
- 3:34But the club has announced the departure of teenager Richard
- 3:37Hartman, who is heading up north to play Elite League hockey for
- 3:41Five Flyers. In cricket, Orton Park moved to
- 3:45the top of the South Links Division One after a smooth 8
- 3:48wicket success over lowly Market Deep in seconds.
- 3:52But Orton Park seconds missed the chance to reach the summit
- 3:55in Division 2. They would have overtaken
- 3:57inactively There's Caster with a win at numerous seconds, but
- 4:01they went down by 6 wickets after totalling 190 for 9.
- 4:06Meanwhile there was some outstanding individual displays
- 4:09in the Hunts League where Soufan Mazar was 100 and 27 not out for
- 4:15AK11 when they completed a full wicket win over Falcon in
- 4:18Division One and Ashley Shamim John who struck an unbeaten 106
- 4:24for Royal Strikers in a win over Bretton in Division Two.
- 4:28Ian Kendall fine performance with six for 10 and 44 not out
- 4:33in a Division Three win for home over Elsto Seconds in Division
- 4:38Three. And finally some Paul winning
- 4:40streak continued for local polls * Mark Gray as he saw a former
- 4:45World champion from Peterborough in the final of the IRPT event
- 4:49at Hatfield. Gray beat Peterborough's former
- 4:52World Champion John Rose 7 four in the final to win the 525 LB
- 4:57first prize. Mark Gray's next in action in
- 5:01the IRPT Amateur Tour event in Leicester this weekend, and
- 5:05that's your headlines. Thank you Noesh.
- 5:08Lots and lots going on. Big kick off for Peterborough
- 5:11Sports and you're going to be there tomorrow aren't you?
- 5:14For the first game of the season, travelling all the way
- 5:16to Chester. That's it.
- 5:17Yeah, I'll be there. We'll be catching up with
- 5:19manager Luke Steele immediately after the game.
- 5:23We'll be posting that on our social media pages on Sunday.
- 5:28Excellent. So to look forward to.
- 5:29We had obviously Tim and Mark Jones, Captain Mark Jones and
- 5:33obviously Chairman Tim Woodward on the show a couple of weeks
- 5:36ago and they've got some very good ambitions for this season.
- 5:39They. Yeah, and they've made some
- 5:40great signings. Just just on that.
- 5:42It's ironic, isn't it? We were talking to Mark on the
- 5:44show about the fact that he's he's entering his 10th year at
- 5:48sports and he's got to look after himself because injuries
- 5:51at his sort of stage of his career.
- 5:53And then he's 5050 for tomorrow for the first game.
- 5:56Bit ironic. But yeah, they've made some
- 5:58great signings. There's a lot of people who are
- 6:02really excited about sports this year and we we might even see
- 6:05playoff football down at. Absolutely and there's been a
- 6:10quite a turnover squad but the players have come in look
- 6:12exciting, look hungry and younger as well.
- 6:16Yeah, there's always a turnover of players at that level because
- 6:20they have to rely on the loan market so much.
- 6:23And then clubs call back players who who are on loan.
- 6:26So the team dynamic often changes two or three times
- 6:30during the season. But they're they're in a great
- 6:32place at the moment. The the people they want people
- 6:36of Bradley McCann, who they've managed to get back in the club
- 6:39and to start the season. You know, who knows how long
- 6:41he's gonna stay, but let's hope he stays for most of the year
- 6:44and then than those I'm going to stop saying playoffs now because
- 6:47you're going to take me to account, aren't you?
- 6:50Well, we're only really repeating what Tim has said.
- 6:52It's not your words, is it really, to be honest.
- 6:55But that's good. And they've got the obviously
- 6:56the the backbone of the experienced in there with the
- 6:59the goalkeeper, Peter Crook, Mark Jones, we mentioned Michael
- 7:02Gash, players like that who have been there a while and and kind
- 7:05of probably create that leadership group within the
- 7:07squad. Yeah, and I think that's
- 7:08important because that's the backbone of the squad and they
- 7:11are all sports owned players with a lot of experience.
- 7:15So that backbone won't change. Barring injuries, Touchwood,
- 7:18that won't change all the way through the season.
- 7:21So that's one thing they've got going for is they're bound to
- 7:23have some tough times during the season.
- 7:26It's not all going to go their way, but when they do, they've
- 7:29got players, experienced players, who will be able to dig
- 7:31in. Yeah, absolutely brilliant and
- 7:33we wish all the wish People sports all the best with their
- 7:35first game tomorrow and look forward to your output from that
- 7:38game. Nyche.
- 7:39Fantastic. Thank you.
- 7:40Right, let's take a short break now and we'll be back in a few
- 7:44minutes. Speaking to club captain Liam
- 7:46Huntley and pro boxer Shona Whitwell from the Wolves Den
- 7:51Boxing Club in Yaxi, the newest boxing club in the city.
- 7:53So stay tuned, we'll be back in a few minutes.

- 10:34So right back to this evening's guests and they're from the
- 10:38Wolves then Boxing Club, the new boxing club in Yaxi.
- 10:41And we're excited to have Liam Huntley, the captain of the
- 10:45club, on the show, along with former Team GB boxer and now pro
- 10:49boxer Shona Whitwell as well. So good evening to you both.
- 10:53Thank you for joining us. How are you both?
- 10:55Yeah. Really.
- 10:56Good, good. Yeah, very well.
- 10:57Thank you. Very well.
- 10:58So coming to you first, Liam, you're you're club captain.
- 11:03So tell us a little about a little bit about this new club,
- 11:07where it's located, and what's the reason for it to sort of be
- 11:10in existence? Yeah, so the Wolves then
- 11:13currently is open and you actually we've only been open
- 11:16about yeah, now the club, club coach Reese Redmond opening it
- 11:21and it's let's say we've been open yeah now and we've had I
- 11:25think close to 100 fights within the gym itself been like
- 11:30multiple tournaments all around the world.
- 11:32So the club's only going to grow up from now.
- 11:35Fantastic. That's a really good start
- 11:37within a year to achieve all that.
- 11:38Yeah, absolutely amazing, isn't it?
- 11:40So, so you said you've had 100 fights actually in the gym
- 11:43itself. So you.
- 11:45Not just yourself, it's between this about 10 to 15 competitive
- 11:49boxers and between we've all been really active this season.
- 11:53It's been a busy one with the first year the club being open.
- 11:57So we've been to countries like Sweden and Denmark, competed all
- 12:01up and down the country, just being in there with like some of
- 12:04the best, best amateur boxers within the country and all
- 12:07around the world. So yet things are looking bright
- 12:10for the future of the of the club.
- 12:12Brilliant. That's really fantastic.
- 12:14And we'll come to Shona in a moment.
- 12:16Shona's obviously a professional boxer.
- 12:17You mentioned them amateur ones there.
- 12:19So for the for the gym and the club itself, are, are you
- 12:22focusing on boxers that want to take the sport kind of seriously
- 12:26or do you invite people who want to kind of just do it as a hobby
- 12:28and and as a fitness sort of exercise?
- 12:31I would say for the club, everyone's welcome, no matter
- 12:33like your background, if you've had lots of experience or not.
- 12:36The club coach Reese Molly asked Suppose like 100% dedication.
- 12:41So if you're willing to take the sport serious, then everyone's
- 12:43welcome. We do have like a fitness class
- 12:47on the Monday where it's like combat conditioning.
- 12:49So a lot of people who don't look to compete come to that
- 12:52sort of class. Then we've got development
- 12:54classes, Senior Open class timetables.
- 12:58So yeah, like I say, that's all he asks for.
- 13:00The courts is just 100% dedication if you take the sport
- 13:03serious and you're welcome to the club.
- 13:06Brilliant. Now it sounds really good, so
- 13:07they say it's open to all and you can come along.
- 13:10Just get a bit of a taster, see if it's for you or not.
- 13:12For a tester, yeah, come along and see what it's like, learn a
- 13:17bit of boxing, learn the fundamentals and dedication and
- 13:21what it takes, obviously, to get to the top of the sport.
- 13:23Fantastic, brilliant. Good stuff.
- 13:24Sharon, if I can come to you now, Reece, obviously, who's the
- 13:30man behind the, the, the gym is, is your partner as well.
- 13:34What kind of what was the concept behind it?
- 13:36What, what made him think I want to open up a boxing gym in
- 13:39Peterborough? And, and you know what was his
- 13:41kind of ambition at the time? Yeah, so obviously since I met
- 13:45him on day one, that was his ultimate goal was to open his
- 13:48own gym and, you know, run his own amateur club first of all.
- 13:53We started doing it for a few mates that he used to work
- 13:57alongside with and now it's just grown massively and it'll just
- 14:01go from strength to strength. But yeah, it's just something
- 14:04he's always wanted to do and now he's doing it and I think he
- 14:08definitely wants to just take it to the next level, hopefully do
- 14:11it full time eventually. But yeah, it's it's amazing.
- 14:15Obviously only being open a year as well.
- 14:18And they're already making waves.
- 14:19You know, he does the majority of it by himself as well.
- 14:24And yeah, they're all performing.
- 14:26You know, they've been travelling the world this year,
- 14:30entered different tournaments, bringing back multiple medals,
- 14:33international medals and yeah, the future likes.
- 14:37Liam said he's looking bright. Fantastic.
- 14:39That's really, really good. And then like you say, it's got
- 14:41a really fast start and you know, you've had 100 fights as
- 14:45you, as you said, Liam. And in terms of sort of Reese's
- 14:50background, then is he a fighter himself or is he, is he, has he
- 14:54kind of got more of AI suppose a sporting interest in boxing and
- 14:57then set at a gym. What's does he, you know, is he
- 15:00a kind of a practical man or is he, does he just kind of do it
- 15:02as a business, if you know what I mean?
- 15:03He's, yeah, he's all about work, working hard.
- 15:07Yeah, he used to box himself. So he's always been around
- 15:10boxing. He's come from a military
- 15:12background now in the London Fire Brigade, so he doesn't
- 15:16really do things in half measures.
- 15:20He juggles a lot and then obviously open this gym.
- 15:24I know it's not been easy, but like I said, he doesn't do
- 15:27things in half measures. So he puts 110% in and I know he
- 15:32just wanted this year was all about getting the name out
- 15:35there, the Wolves Den and then yeah.
- 15:38And that's literally what they've done because they've all
- 15:40performed, they've all brought back medals and, you know, best
- 15:43boxers of the tournaments. And, you know, so I think a lot
- 15:46of people were like, you know what I mean?
- 15:48Like we're making waves. So yeah, it's exciting.
- 15:51But yeah, race has always been involved.
- 15:53You know, he's been an England coach and, you know, obviously
- 15:56he's turning towards the pros now as well.
- 15:58So it'd be a bit both obviously I'mixed between the two.
- 16:01So I train in Essex at the matching gym, Tony Sims Gym, but
- 16:05I also mix between there and the Wolves.
- 16:08Den Reese obviously coaches me when I'm out of camp and I
- 16:12haven't got a fight date, so it's good to mix between the two
- 16:16and just have those different coaching backgrounds.
- 16:19Yeah, brilliant. And you mentioned it's probably
- 16:21a good moment to talk about your history and your story in a
- 16:24sport actually, because I read up about it and it's a
- 16:26fascinating story. Stories you mentioned that
- 16:29you're you're you've got your professional gym, the Matchroom
- 16:31gym. So Matchroom is in the the Eddie
- 16:33Hearn Hern stable. Is it Matchroom or is it part of
- 16:37the that that organization, isn't it?
- 16:38Yeah, so Tony Sims runs the gym alongside John Ryder and yeah,
- 16:44so I've just, you know, found my home there turning professional.
- 16:49Reece actually introduced me to them because, you know, he
- 16:52trusts them and knows they're like non individual coaches.
- 16:56And yeah, I just mix in between the two.
- 16:59So it's a good balance for me to be honest.
- 17:02But yeah, so I had my debut in April and obviously it was on
- 17:05team UV for eight years prior to that.
- 17:09You know, I've I've travelled the world myself and you know,
- 17:12I've been boxing since I was about 5 years old.
- 17:15So it's always been a massive part of my life.
- 17:20But yeah, so I'm just waiting on a date for my second
- 17:22professional fight now, so should get that any.
- 17:25Yeah, absolutely. It's been a great journey
- 17:27because I know you, you say you've been Team GB for eight
- 17:31years. You you were literally knocking
- 17:33on the door of the Olympics and now you've turned pro.
- 17:36So you've had a good kind of rise to where you where you are
- 17:38now. Yeah, yes, it's all good
- 17:41experience for, you know what's to come.
- 17:44It's it's kind of like an apprenticeship, if you want to
- 17:46call it that, in the amateurs. And it sets you up for the
- 17:49professional ranks because it's, it's completely different ball
- 17:53game. You know, you, you get to be
- 17:55like at the very top, the pinnacle in amateur boxing on
- 17:59GV, going to all these tournaments and then as soon as
- 18:02you turn professional, it's almost like back to square one.
- 18:05But obviously I've got all those, all the experience behind
- 18:08myself from that just take me far in the pros.
- 18:13Excellent. So for those that and including
- 18:15I include myself in. But for those that don't know,
- 18:17what changes for you when you turn from an amateur boxer into
- 18:20a pro boxer? So it's mainly, it's more of a
- 18:23business in the professionals, yes, it's all about money and
- 18:28profiles and business. Whereas in the amateurs you
- 18:32could kind of just travel the world, enjoy yourself, You know,
- 18:35I was getting a wage on Team GB. You didn't have to worry about
- 18:39anything. Now it's like I'm solely relying
- 18:42on sponsorship. You become self-employed
- 18:44effective, don't you? Rather than being paid, Yeah.
- 18:46So I'm solely relying on sponsorship.
- 18:48You know, I'm not getting a wage.
- 18:49You know, you just have to, you get paid when you fight.
- 18:53And obviously you've got to sell off tickets.
- 18:55And so it's a whole new ball game.
- 18:56You don't have to sell tickets and amateur, you know, you'd go
- 18:59to these tournaments, for example, you'd go to like Russia
- 19:02or something and you'd box in front of two people in a massive
- 19:05stadium. Like it's just mental.
- 19:08And then you go from being a pro and then you've got to sell all
- 19:10these tickets and you're in front of thousands.
- 19:12So yeah, it's definitely different.
- 19:15And I'm still learning on the job.
- 19:16But no, I'm enjoying it. It's a new chapter for me.
- 19:19Fantastic. And you said you had your first
- 19:21fight in April, did you? Yeah, yeah, in April was my
- 19:24debut and I really enjoyed that as at York Hall, so iconic
- 19:27venue. I've never boxed there before
- 19:30but yeah, I'm just waiting on a on a fight date now and but I
- 19:34just want to be active, stay busy and climb the ladder.
- 19:38Yeah, absolutely. And how did that first fight go
- 19:40with the build up to it, the fight event itself?
- 19:42And how did it all feel? Yeah, yeah, it's exciting.
- 19:45It was a bit stressful. You know, you've got a as a pro,
- 19:48you've got apply for your licence and get your medical
- 19:52sorted and that can take a long time and that was a bit
- 19:55frustrating. But finally we got a date and we
- 19:58had our eyes set on that. Did a 6th rounder and won every
- 20:02round and I actually boxed a 5050 opponent which a lot of
- 20:06people wouldn't take in their first fight.
- 20:09So that's somebody that's pretty much levelled to you.
- 20:11Is that what you mean by 50? So it could.
- 20:13Go either way, couldn't it? Yeah.
- 20:14So I think they'd lost like four or five, but then they'd won
- 20:17three by knockout, like 3 knockouts.
- 20:19So it was a 5050 opponent. She was tough, to be honest, and
- 20:23she did come to win. But yeah, that just shows like,
- 20:27you know, I'm not going to be boxing these journey women to
- 20:30start off with, and I want to start off at a high level so
- 20:32that I can build on from that and it won't be long before I'm
- 20:35chasing titles effectively. And I guess if you've made, if
- 20:38you're having fights like that, your name's kind of out there
- 20:41almost straight away, isn't it that that people take you
- 20:42seriously and think you're right?
- 20:44Shona's not in it for for just to kind of get warm in the place
- 20:47she's actually in, meaning serious business.
- 20:49Yeah, I think it did help with the the ranking side of things.
- 20:52It boosted me right up because of that girl's record, so that
- 20:56helped. And that was only my debut, so
- 20:58you know, and I'd had a year out the ring since my last fight on
- 21:02GB then, so I still felt a bit rusty and things like that.
- 21:06And adjusting to two-minute rounds now rather than freeze.
- 21:09But in the apertures you do 3 three minute rounds.
- 21:12That was 6 two-minute rounds, so slightly different.
- 21:15So it's all just adjusting and learning on the job really.
- 21:18But you know, I really enjoyed it.
- 21:20I enjoyed the atmosphere, having my family and friends around.
- 21:23I'm not used to that, you know what I mean?
- 21:24So it was like a massive buzz. But yeah, so I'm just excited
- 21:29for the future. Fantastic, And any hint of when
- 21:32your next fight might be? Any idea?
- 21:34Or you still need the process of setting it up?
- 21:35For September, October, but yeah, just waiting on
- 21:39confirmation. I think in August is kind of
- 21:41offseason for professionals, so it does go a bit quiet.
- 21:46So yeah, I'm just waiting for shows to be announced, but
- 21:49hopefully September, October, and they could get out again
- 21:52before the year's over with. Brilliant, keep us in touch with

- 25:17you fancy being a guest on the show, do reach out and we'll see
- 25:21if we can make that happen. Right back to this evening's
- 25:24guests. We've just been speaking with
- 25:25Shona Whitwell, who's a pro boxer working out of the pro
- 25:29boxing gym in in Essex or down down South and also working with
- 25:34the Wolves Den amateur boxing club in Peterborough, one of the
- 25:37newest boxing clubs in the area. Right, We'll speak to Liam, Liam
- 25:42Hudley, who we spoke to earlier. He's the club captain.
- 25:44He gave us an intro about the club and how why it's been set
- 25:47up. Liam, your story in the sport,
- 25:50how did you get into boxing and where you know, how can you find
- 25:54yourself where you are now? Yeah, so it's it's a bit of a
- 25:56funny story really. It was just one evening, I think
- 25:59it was a Friday night. I was playing football and it
- 26:02got rained off actually, so I didn't end up end up playing.
- 26:05And I seen there was a boxing class running and sort of her as
- 26:09well fair bit. And it was my mum.
- 26:12She just said, oh, it's your fancy, fancy this just to keep
- 26:14your fitness up. So I give it a shot.
- 26:16And then ever since then I've never looked back. 10 years ago,
- 26:19loved the sport ever since. Fantastic.
- 26:21And like, I got to a point, I think I was about 16 years old,
- 26:25where the boxing actually took over the football and I packed
- 26:28in football and just focused on boxing.
- 26:31And ever since then, like it says, I've just loved the sport,
- 26:34just make it play all about my life now, sort of dedicate
- 26:37myself to it. So yeah, I'm glad that my mum
- 26:41took as long as That's right session.
- 26:43Yeah, We often find that that we've had other guests on the
- 26:46show previously where they they have, you know, more than one
- 26:49discipline. And ultimately you do have to
- 26:50make the choice at some point because you want to focus and
- 26:54take one of them seriously. Otherwise you kind of just like
- 26:57you become average of both rather than really good at 1:00.
- 26:59That's what it was. I've sort of fallen out of love
- 27:01with the sport of football and there's a boxing just of every
- 27:05aspect of it because I think it's more obviously an
- 27:07individual sport where you focus on yourself.
- 27:09You can't blame of our team members and this Nova if you get
- 27:13beat in a fight at talking about yourself.
- 27:15Yeah. So yeah, I think that's that's
- 27:17the main reason why I love the sport.
- 27:19Yeah, excellent. And how long ago was that then?
- 27:20When when did you start boxing? Initially, so I was, I think I
- 27:24was about 13 when I started, on 23 now.
- 27:27So I've been in the sport like 10 years.
- 27:29Yeah, yeah, excellent. And what's for those that are
- 27:32kind of sharp hearing like me? Your accent isn't from around
- 27:35here, clearly. When people can understand me.
- 27:39We can, we can, we can. It's good how long you've been
- 27:43in the area and what kind of mood you made your move to this
- 27:45area. So I've only been living in this
- 27:47area coming up here now. So ever since the club opened,
- 27:51obviously when I heard that Reese was opening the gym, I
- 27:54just made made the move to come down and sort of bring my life
- 27:58down this way to work with them because it was about two years
- 28:00ago, I met Reese in person and obviously through Shawna, it'll
- 28:05be girlfriend. She used to box with Shawna back
- 28:06in the day. So that's how I know recent
- 28:09Shawna and yes, I come along for just like a tear star session.
- 28:13We stuck us on a few sparring sessions and I've seen like the
- 28:16work I think he puts in to the boxers that he's got and I just
- 28:21learned so much even on like the first few sessions I had of
- 28:23them. And he made us feel like a
- 28:25beginner again. So I just knew obviously if I
- 28:28dedicated myself to training with him then it would just make
- 28:33myself like better in sport. Brilliant.
- 28:35And I mean that that says a lot for a Reese and Shona,
- 28:39obviously, and and the new facility that's been set up that
- 28:42you've up sticks from your home city to move to Peterborough.
- 28:45And because you you're dedicated to your sport and obviously you
- 28:48have faith in what Reese in the club can do.
- 28:50For you, yeah, because boxing up north, obviously I was just
- 28:53doing it more sort of like because I love the sport, but I
- 28:57was only boxing like 3 and 4 * a year.
- 28:59I wasn't really getting the opportunities that I've seen
- 29:02Reese can provide. So he just said to us like,
- 29:05look, if you can put the work in, I'll I'll match it and even
- 29:09double it. So yeah, it was just nice to
- 29:11have someone like show us a bit of attention and actually want
- 29:15us to do well within the sport. Fantastic and your achievements
- 29:20in the sport to date. You can compete at the 71
- 29:23kilograms level, I believe, and you recently got yourself a
- 29:27silver medal in Europe's biggest boxer box cup tournament in
- 29:30Haringey this year. And you've got another
- 29:33tournament coming up next weekend, the Riviera Box Cup.
- 29:36Yeah. Is that right?
- 29:37Where does that take place? That takes place.
- 29:40I think it's a South Devon, OK, yeah, so quite, quite aware
- 29:43where, but it's your first time doing this tournament and
- 29:46there's quite a lot of representing the club, so it'll
- 29:49be a good one. Looking forward to it, hopefully
- 29:51bring back the gold. Fantastic.
- 29:53Yeah, good luck with that. So, and in terms of your
- 29:55ambitions in the, in the sport itself, what, what's your kind?
- 29:58Of I think the end goal is like like like showing up to turn pro
- 30:02eventually, but like like mentioning before, since trend
- 30:06research made us feel like beginner again.
- 30:08So I think maybe it's a few years hopefully when win a few
- 30:11more medals as an amateur. I think the goal in amateur is
- 30:16to win like a national title just to say I'm the best in the
- 30:19country at in my weight division.
- 30:22And once I've achieved that, hopefully represent represent
- 30:24the country like box for England and then then we're going to
- 30:27look to turn pro. So yeah, I've got ambitions as
- 30:29an armature first and then, then I can focus on turning a
- 30:33professional probably in a couple of.
- 30:35Years and how does that kind of switch work for you in terms of
- 30:38from a practical perspective, I know Shona described in terms of
- 30:41the the the how it feels in terms of your your your employee
- 30:46kind of the the employment side of it, so to speak.
- 30:49But in terms of your in your own head, when and how do you think
- 30:53you know, I want to turn pro now and I've shown obviously had
- 30:55eight years with Team GB was boxing for the country and
- 30:58internationally. How How will it feel for you
- 31:01when you know that you're ready to go pro?
- 31:04To be honest, I've always had the goal of turning pro.
- 31:06I think that's always been my end goal, but like I say, it's
- 31:10just I want to achieve certain things within the amateurs
- 31:13first, just to know that I've got that amateur pedigree.
- 31:17It sort of helps when you're turning over like for
- 31:19sponsorships and like promotional deals.
- 31:23If you've got a bit of amateur background, say if I was doing a
- 31:25national title and have all these Box Cup gold medals, Like
- 31:28it looks good for myself and it sort of like gives you a bit of
- 31:32a head start in the pros rather than like what show?
- 31:35And I was saying like starting off on the small hole shows,
- 31:37trying to sell tickets. So I'm just looking at the
- 31:40amateurs like an apprenticeship as well.
- 31:42I'm still learning and enjoying the sport to get a traveller
- 31:44world, to get provided loads of opportunities to box yeah, there
- 31:48and everywhere. So yeah, for now I'm just just
- 31:50enjoying it and and. Then pardon my ignorance, but if
- 31:56there's a pro fight taking place, so let's say showing the
- 31:58fights pro next time she's pro fighting, September, October
- 32:01time, can you be as an amateur be on the undercard in that same
- 32:04event? Or does it?
- 32:05Is it completely? Separate.
- 32:06Yeah, it's complete. Completely separate.
- 32:07So it's like 2 different sports within itself.
- 32:10Like you see how much as there's a lot, a lot more fast-paced.
- 32:14That's why people sort of look as the pros is like complete
- 32:18different sport when you have to transition from going boxing
- 32:20like 3 freeze, like 3-3 minute rounds to like as a pro
- 32:25sometimes when you boxing for titles, 12-3 minute rounds.
- 32:28Obviously how much is a bit more of a Sprint?
- 32:30The pros is a bit more of like a marathon.
- 32:33So, but yeah, in terms of how much as boxing on pro shows,
- 32:38yeah is what you don't say that and you say no apart from like
- 32:42the unlicensed, but that's. That's a we.
- 32:44Don't go there. In terms of your role as club
- 32:50captain and what does that entail, What, what
- 32:53responsibilities does that give you?
- 32:54I think we should just give me the the club captain role just
- 32:57sort of for people to look up to me because he knows obviously I
- 33:01commit to the sport like I move your life from Newcastle down
- 33:05here. So it's just just a bit of a
- 33:07role model, I think more than anything.
- 33:09And I'm just here obviously for the rest of the lads and last as
- 33:12if they've got someone need someone to speak to.
- 33:14I'm always here for them, you know, I mean, because sometimes
- 33:17they'll be a bit like won't go through struggles in the sport,
- 33:20like balance and work life. So yeah, I hope to think that
- 33:23you had a for the other lads and lasted to come to and speak to
- 33:26rather than just like getting all pent up about some of their
- 33:30emotions and stuff. And yeah, I want me to, yeah,
- 33:32just to help. Help.
- 33:35And what's the set up at the club like in terms of the number
- 33:37of coaches and that sort of thing?
- 33:40So Reese is obviously the main coach.
- 33:41We've got another AD, Simon, he comes in a few few times a week.
- 33:46He mainly does like the combat condition and on the Monday
- 33:48helps out with the developments. Got like an SNC nutrition sports
- 33:53coaches. Callum, he's got was a combat,
- 33:57combat performance. Yeah, combat performance.
- 34:00So he helps out with like all the nutrition plans, SNC
- 34:04programmes. But yeah, like I said, research
- 34:07like the the headquarters and he he takes her all all around the
- 34:11world and all around the country, so.
- 34:13Excellent, good stuff. And that's actually, I noticed
- 34:16on your sport, on your social medias this week that the
- 34:20boxing, the England Boxing Certificate's been renewed,
- 34:23hasn't it, for the club. So they'll give you another year
- 34:26under their their kind of approval if you like.
- 34:29Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 34:29So I think every year you've got a renew sort of club membership.
- 34:33So yeah, it's good to see that we've got another year and.
- 34:36So what does it take to kind of keep renewing that in terms of I
- 34:39guess they do some form of audio inspection at the gym?
- 34:42Yeah, I'm not too sure to be honest.
- 34:43I just focus on the box and resort all that out.
- 34:46It's like reason to say on your best behaviour guys, England
- 34:49boxing are coming around today. I think it's just to make sure
- 34:51that the gym's got all like the necessary equipment and it's in
- 34:54a like a stable area. It's got like the coaches or
- 34:56like the first aid sort of and stuff like that safeguard.
- 35:01And so I don't know if Sean has has a bit of input of what.
- 35:05Goes on. Yeah, it's just regulation.
- 35:07And stuff like that. Really.
- 35:08But yeah. Brilliant.
- 35:10How big's the the actual gym itself then would give us a if
- 35:13you can. I know it's difficult on radio,
- 35:15but try and give us a bit of a a visual of what it's what the
- 35:18facility is like. It's not like a massive space,
- 35:20it's sort of like a cladding unit obviously in the actually,
- 35:25but it's got everything we'll need, you know what I mean?
- 35:27We've got a ring, got plenty of floor space, bags, we'll know,
- 35:31sometimes get even. What would you say numbers about
- 35:3330 in? Yeah, 30 on average a day.
- 35:36But like today, we've got sparring from all over the
- 35:39country and they'll probably be about, I don't know, Yeah, the
- 35:43gym. Gets 100.
- 35:44Times. Does it?
- 35:44Yeah, Yeah, it's very. But yeah, it's it's good size,
- 35:47but it's got everything you need there to be honest and ideal
- 35:51location. Yeah, it's just off the main
- 35:53road. Is it a one?
- 35:54And the road links are good. Yeah, yeah, exactly so.
- 35:59For those that don't know, location wise, it's the new kind
- 36:02of newish business part where Junction 17, the car dealership
- 36:06is. It's the last.
- 36:07If you're coming from facet, it's the first left as you go
- 36:09around the bend to actually from the other end.
- 36:11Obviously it's the last turn to the right before you go towards
- 36:14facet. Yeah, that's the one.
- 36:15So it's should be quite easy to find in there.
- 36:18Yeah, definitely. It's it's got access for
- 36:21obviously off straight off the main roads.
- 36:22It's got train stations nearby. That's why we get a lot of
- 36:25sparring come down and we've got like host a lot of like the
- 36:30regional camps. So we still put on like a day
- 36:32where people from all over the region, Cambridge and Essex
- 36:36eastern counties will come down and we get like good turn out
- 36:39every time and sometimes in like 4 or five hours just getting
- 36:43through all the sparring. Yeah, it's really good.
- 36:47And again, it says a lot for the facility that people from from
- 36:49nationally are coming to to to do sparring sessions.
- 36:52Yeah, people see like what we've got going on and what Reece is
- 36:56doing for the club and they want to be a part of it, whether it's
- 36:59just for a training session or, you know, they might come down
- 37:02and think what he's doing is great and they want to come
- 37:05over. But yeah, that that says a lot.
- 37:07You know, we've got people coming from all over the country
- 37:09for sparring amateurs and pros. So it just, it just goes show
- 37:12after a year of what he's been doing, you know, not a lot of
- 37:17clubs can say they they do what he's done after a year.
- 37:20So he's he's done amazing, to be honest.
- 37:22Wonderful. Sounds brilliant, right?
- 37:23Let's take one more break and we'll be back speaking with Liam

- 39:40one over next week's one overwrites it to failing that,
- 39:43we'll be posting a podcast of the show over the weekend as
- 39:46well so you can share that with any friends or listen back as
- 39:49many times as you want. OK, going back to our guests
- 39:53this evening, we've heard a heard the brilliant stories of
- 39:57both Shona, Shona and Liam how they've got into sports.
- 40:01Shona, former Team GB amateur boxer is now term pro and
- 40:05looking forward to her next fight in the autumn.
- 40:08And Liam, who's relocated from the Newcastle area to
- 40:11Peterborough, especially because of the gym, which says a lot
- 40:14about the gym and the Reese who's the the owner of the gym
- 40:17and the organization that takes place there as well.
- 40:22Liam, if I come to you as club captain, so anyone listening out
- 40:25there thinks, oh I'm going to fan, I fancy having to go boxing
- 40:28or a parent listening thinking, well my child might benefit from
- 40:32that, how do they get in touch with the gym and kind of show
- 40:36their interest? And so we've got obviously
- 40:39social media pages, Facebook, Instagram, e-mail number, just
- 40:44literally just get in touch. Just I don't know who wants to
- 40:47come along and we can sort sort anything out.
- 40:50Just come along for a test, our session, join in if you enjoy it
- 40:53and happy days. That's it.
- 40:56That's literally just come along and say if you like it, if you
- 40:59enjoy it and want to dedicate yourself to the sport and become
- 41:02the best, then yes, go from there.
- 41:04Signed up Yeah, go from there. Brilliant and.
- 41:07In terms of age ranges, is there a kind of a limitation or that
- 41:12you're willing to have a take? On, yeah.
- 41:14So mainly at the moment it's just sort of youths and seniors.
- 41:17I think that ranges from about like 1516 as a youth up to like
- 41:21senior any, any sort of adult age.
- 41:24But hopefully in the future we'll look on and take on like
- 41:26juniors. Maybe it's like when we expand a
- 41:30little bit because at the moment we've only got like limited
- 41:33space in the gym and like I said, there's lots of people
- 41:36wanting to calm down, work with us and work with a resource.
- 41:40Yeah. We'll see what the future holds,
- 41:41but I think at the moment it's mainly just even since he's seen
- 41:44as, isn't it? Yeah.
- 41:46Yeah, yeah, which makes sense. And that's obviously male and
- 41:48female. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:48Male and female. Yeah, but which?
- 41:50Is good. So in terms of once somebody
- 41:53reached out what can they expect next?
- 41:55What's kind of the onboarding or the sort of taster sessions and
- 41:58what what would happen once they kind of engage with the club?
- 42:02Yeah. So obviously the head coach, we
- 42:04say normally just take a one to one session just to see how they
- 42:06get on and see their goals, ambitions in the sport and then
- 42:12they should just join in on the squad session, see how they get
- 42:14on and well, that's about it. Just come along, that's all I
- 42:18can say. See if you like them, see if
- 42:20they like you type thing. That's it and and it and is it
- 42:23somebody who's got experience in boxing before can would you take
- 42:26on anyone? Anyone.
- 42:27Anyone who's willing to say just put in 100%, that's, that's all
- 42:33Reese asks for, just give it you all and dedicate yourself to the
- 42:37training programme. Commit to the programme and
- 42:40you'll see the results, like results speak for themselves.
- 42:42Like we say, we've meddled in multiple box cups this year.
- 42:46We've had plenty like regional finalists and it's like say it's
- 42:50only the first year, so future is bright.
- 42:52What what we've got, what we've got in store.
- 42:55Yeah. So people can kind of be almost,
- 42:57almost promised. Obviously takes effort from the
- 42:59person to come, but they can be almost be promised a good
- 43:02pathway towards a level of success.
- 43:04Yeah, that's it. We're providing like
- 43:06opportunities, get the best sparring, best training session.
- 43:10So all we need to do is put the work in.
- 43:12It's it's a we'll get the results in the end if we just
- 43:16put the work in. That's all that's all that
- 43:18requires. There's a little bit of talent,
- 43:21but you know, they're saying like hard week, hard work beats
- 43:24talent when talent doesn't work hard.
- 43:25So. Yeah, yeah, absolutely right,
- 43:27Absolutely right. And do people need to have any
- 43:29kind of equipment when they first come along?
- 43:31Can they borrow some for a while?
- 43:33And. They can borrow some for a
- 43:34while, but it's mainly just get yourself gum Shields, head
- 43:37guards, set of gloves, set of sparring gloves and that's all.
- 43:42You spend hundreds of pounds, you know what I mean?
- 43:43Just nice, decent set of gloves. Decent.
- 43:47I've got Grim Shield and ready to go.
- 43:50I'm ready to go, yeah. Fantastic, that sounds good.
- 43:53And in terms of the club itself, does he need anything at the
- 43:58moment, volunteers, any kind of help or support in any other
- 44:02way? Yeah, so currently like looking
- 44:04for a lot of sponsorships just because obviously travelling all
- 44:08here, there and everywhere to all these countries and across
- 44:11the country, yeah, costs, costs a lot of money and let's say
- 44:15research more of just like he works full time, all the
- 44:18athletes in the gym, we all work full time.
- 44:22So we're actually paying to compete.
- 44:24Really, we don't, we don't earn a penny from the sport and
- 44:27amateurs. I know Sean, I mentioned when
- 44:29she was up GB, she was getting a wage.
- 44:31But for the people that are level who are just boxing,
- 44:35obviously for the club, yeah, we don't get paid for it.
- 44:38So it's hard, but we do it like we do for the love of the sport.
- 44:43So any sponsorships, so who are any business is looking to
- 44:47sponsor at a club that's looking to really go fast and reach out?
- 44:52Yeah, absolutely. Can I just interrupt and?
- 44:54Course you can. You're the guest.
- 44:55Yeah, 1. Of the guests, you can say like
- 44:58shout out to Links Recruitment, who's a local business, they
- 45:02already sponsor the club, but obviously we're still looking
- 45:05for other sponsorships. Like I say, it's all kind of
- 45:08self funded at this point. You know, everyone pays a
- 45:11membership fee and you get plenty for your money, don't
- 45:15you? Let's be honest, like gives out,
- 45:17you know, S&C programs, nutrition, if you need help with
- 45:20nutrition running programs. So it's not just your average
- 45:23club. You get everything included for
- 45:26that. But yeah, so we're always
- 45:28looking for sponsorship. Sponsors kind of get a practical
- 45:31return on their their investment, not just like
- 45:34branding awareness. They can.
- 45:36Yeah, we'd like to be involved with the sponsors on a personal
- 45:39level as well. And it's all tax deductible.
- 45:42So you will get it back anyway, but and it all goes to a good
- 45:45cause so. It's a link to recruitment.
- 45:46I have helped out a lot. All these tournaments that we've
- 45:50done, you forget how much it costs.
- 45:52Just like obviously you've got to pay the entry fee for all the
- 45:54boxers, coaches after pier when it's the expenses travelling.
- 45:58They're stopping all of our accommodation and let's say with
- 46:01all their hope wouldn't have been possible.
- 46:05Yeah. Big big shout out to Links
- 46:06recruitment. And the sponsorship sort of
- 46:09without getting into too much deal, but sponsorship
- 46:12arrangements, is it is it for individual boxes or for the club
- 46:15in general or can it be both it? Could be both, but like you say,
- 46:19we're just looking for sponsorships for the club.
- 46:22Obviously the individual athletes can look for
- 46:25sponsorships on their own sort of basis.
- 46:29But yeah, I think anything if we were to get sponsorships, it
- 46:33would should be for the club because only like it's just.
- 46:36Starting out and. It's just starting out.
- 46:38Whereas like obviously the boxers now, they've still got
- 46:40jobs as well as doing this as well.
- 46:43So right now it's the club that needs the backing and then you
- 46:47can look into like sponsored individual boxes like later on
- 46:50down the line. But yeah, obviously to enter in
- 46:53all these tournaments and the hotels and stuff like that, it
- 46:57does. Cost a lot that's up doesn't.
- 46:58It. Yeah, 100%.
- 47:00Brilliant. Good stuff, guys.
- 47:02It's come to the end of the show.
- 47:03It's been absolutely fascinating speaking with you and thank you
- 47:06very much for coming in and taking your time out for us and
- 47:10wishing you continued success, obviously with the gym first and
- 47:13foremost, but certainly individually in your careers as
- 47:16well. And do keep in touch.
- 47:17We'll certainly give you a shout out individually or as as a gym
- 47:21on our headline section as you, as you saw at the start of the
- 47:23show. But certainly, yeah, please do
- 47:26keep in touch and wishing you all the best with everything.
- 47:28Yeah, appreciate. That.
- 47:29No problem. Thank you.
- 47:31Right. Thank you for joining us this
- 47:32evening and we'll be back again same time, same place next week
- 47:36where we have Dan England, referee, qualified referee on
- 47:40the show with us. So do TuneIn and find out what
- 47:43it's like to be a referee and the insights of how you can

- 47:51enjoy the great weather and we'll see you soon.
