- 0:44Speaker 1: I heard Roger Craiger sing this very song Saturday night,
- 0:49Speaker 1: New bron Fels when he opened for Willing.
- 0:52Speaker 3: It is Singga de Mayo. It's also Taco Day.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I don't know how that figures, because every Tuesday day
- 1:00Speaker 1: as Taco Tuesday, and every so often Taco Day falls
- 1:07Speaker 1: on Cinco de Marios. So we have a harmonic convergence
- 1:12Speaker 1: going on today. I'm going to celebrate with Tacos tonight.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Glad you're here.
- 1:21Speaker 1: This portion of the program brought to you by Central
- 1:23Speaker 1: Texas Sports Medicine. I don't want to call this an
- 1:28Speaker 1: unusual show, but we have a lot of different stuff
- 1:32Speaker 1: which isn't unusual for our show. But I'm talking about
- 1:36Speaker 1: like Dabo Sweeney, I'm talking about Baylor basketball coach Scott Drew.
- 1:45Speaker 1: We've got a high school report. I am going to
- 1:49Speaker 1: replay an interview I did yesterday, but I did it
- 1:54Speaker 1: in the first hour. I realize some of you may
- 1:57Speaker 1: not have heard it. Although whenever you miss interview or
- 2:01Speaker 1: any part of the show, I don't know why you would,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but I understand things come up. You know, we have
- 2:07Speaker 1: it on our website that you can always listen to.
- 2:11Speaker 3: But we're going to replay an interview.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That we did yesterday and it's on Boomtown. That's the
- 2:26Speaker 1: name of the book. Joe Popolarto is the author. And
- 2:30Speaker 1: we have a shortened show because we have Aggie baseball.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It is the fifth game of a five game homestand
- 2:39Speaker 1: for the Aggies, they are hosting Prairie Few tonight for
- 2:44Speaker 1: the seventeenth time. The Aggies are sixteen and oh against
- 2:50Speaker 1: prairie View. There's been a lot of run rules against
- 2:53Speaker 1: prairie View lately. Texas A getting ready for its road
- 3:03Speaker 1: trip to Oxford for Ole Miss, and the Aggie is
- 3:10Speaker 1: sitting at thirty five and ten. They've been really good
- 3:14Speaker 1: in mid week games. D one Baseball has them ninth.
- 3:24Speaker 1: RPI has them eight, probably four out of six. We'll
- 3:33Speaker 1: get them in the Super Regional. Of course, before we
- 3:37Speaker 1: talk about super Regional, they have to win before that.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But hey, last year A and M one fourteen against
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Panthers. So that is six o'clock five forty five
- 3:57Speaker 1: here on the zoneers in the Bronx against the Yankees.
- 4:03Speaker 3: That's the bad news. The good news.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Jacob Degram is throwing the bad news. The Rangers are
- 4:12Speaker 1: sixteen and eighteen. The Yankees are twenty four and eleven.
- 4:19Speaker 1: The bad news is that they have put Josh Smith
- 4:25Speaker 1: on ten day IL with a right glute strain retroactive
- 4:31Speaker 1: to May the fourth. Justin Foscue has been recalled from
- 4:37Speaker 1: Triple A Round Rock, where he was hitting two eighty
- 4:41Speaker 1: seven with two homers, ten doubles, fourteen runs batted in.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Josh Smith has hit just two seventeen, with two doubles
- 4:50Speaker 1: and six.
- 4:51Speaker 3: RBI so far this year.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Bad news for the Astros they have to play the
- 5:00Speaker 1: Dodgers again tonight. Good news for the Astros Shohi Otani
- 5:08Speaker 1: will not be dh because he is oh for his
- 5:12Speaker 1: last seventeen. Bad news for the Astros. He's pitching tonight
- 5:21Speaker 1: and he's pretty good, so we'll see what happens there.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Bad news for the Astros is they played the Dodgers
- 5:33Speaker 1: last night and lost eight to three, and Yam and
- 5:41Speaker 1: Moto got the victory.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 5:48Speaker 1: One hockey game in the playoffs tonight. It's Minnesota Colorado.
- 5:56Speaker 3: That game is on ESPN.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Colorado won the opening game nine to six, nine eight
- 6:07Speaker 1: of those goals. With Jasper Walstead in net, and so
- 6:18Speaker 1: Phelippe Gustafsen has been tabbed by Wild coach John Hines
- 6:24Speaker 1: to be in net tonight. He hasn't played since April thirteenth,
- 6:29Speaker 1: when he allowed five goals at Saint Louis had a
- 6:33Speaker 1: two point sixty nine goals against. Walstead surrendered fourteen goals
- 6:39Speaker 1: in six games against the Stars, but eight goals against
- 6:46Speaker 1: the Avalanche. Jay Gottinger one of many stars who has
- 6:54Speaker 1: gone before the Dallas media for the end of the year.
- 6:58Speaker 3: By the way, we are working on.
- 7:01Speaker 1: One of our favorites, Darryl Razor Ray to be on
- 7:05Speaker 1: the show for his annual State of the Stars season
- 7:10Speaker 1: wrap up.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I will let you know, could be this week, could
- 7:14Speaker 3: be next week.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Jamie Benn may Or may not have said goodbye today,
- 7:21Speaker 1: said he can't imagine not wearing a Star's uniform. It's
- 7:24Speaker 1: been an honor, he said, it has been an honor.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I don't know if we read anything that he's the captain,
- 7:32Speaker 1: but near the end of a brilliant career, Jason Robertson
- 7:35Speaker 1: is a free agent. Jake Ottinger said today, I don't
- 7:39Speaker 1: feel like I accomplished any of my goals. I want
- 7:43Speaker 1: to win the Stanley Cup. I want to win the
- 7:45Speaker 1: Vezina Trophy. I wanted to be a starting goalie for
- 7:49Speaker 1: Team USA. None of those happened. I think it's important
- 7:53Speaker 1: to set big goals. Those are three really hard things
- 7:56Speaker 1: to do, but I think I can do it. I
- 7:59Speaker 1: think I'm proud of the regular season I had. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: think there's another level I can go to. I have
- 8:08Speaker 1: a lot of things. I need to look at, things
- 8:10Speaker 1: I need to change to get better at if I
- 8:13Speaker 1: want to achieve those goals and help this team win.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Live golf.
- 8:23Speaker 1: This CEO, Scott O'Neill is confident that it will continue,
- 8:31Speaker 1: but of course the bit of factor. The Saudy Driven
- 8:36Speaker 1: Public Investment Fund announced last week it's ending its back
- 8:40Speaker 1: being of Live Golf, O'Neill saying, today I think I
- 8:45Speaker 1: find myself energized, excited, happy, feeling a bit of pressure
- 8:49Speaker 1: for sure, and grateful for the opportunity. I'm feeling inspired.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I feel we have a clear path to win. But
- 8:57Speaker 1: he didn't outline what that clear path is. He says,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I think the team format is transformational. We'll see what happens.
- 9:09Speaker 1: No buyers for the teams. Live Golf owns and operates
- 9:12Speaker 1: the thirteen teams while committing thirty million a week in purses.
- 9:19Speaker 1: That's without a lucrative TV and media rights deal. Phil
- 9:24Speaker 1: Mickelson is not playing in the PGA and has withdrawn
- 9:27Speaker 1: from live competition due to an ongoing quote personal health
- 9:33Speaker 1: matter with his family. Michelson will skip the PGA, where
- 9:41Speaker 1: he's won twice. O'Neil said, I want to be really sensitive.
- 9:46Speaker 1: We all have things going on in our lives that
- 9:49Speaker 1: are personal, and his is. I have a lot of
- 9:53Speaker 1: love and respect for him as a human being, and
- 9:55Speaker 1: certainly of respect for him over what he's accomplished in
- 9:57Speaker 1: his career. His presence is really helpful. I hope he
- 10:02Speaker 1: comes back soon. He carries a ton of weight in
- 10:06Speaker 1: every room he walks. That's not only because he's a
- 10:09Speaker 1: six time major champion, but he's got gravitas. It comes
- 10:13Speaker 1: with something that's way beyond winning. He's one of the
- 10:16Speaker 1: guys helping me. John Ram says he has multiple years
- 10:21Speaker 1: left on his live contract and doesn't see quote many
- 10:25Speaker 1: ways out. During a news conference ahead of the tournament
- 10:32Speaker 1: this week at Trump National Golf Club, Rom revealed he
- 10:36Speaker 1: has settled his long dispute with the DP World Tour
- 10:40Speaker 1: over unpaid fines. The settlement allows him to regain his
- 10:45Speaker 1: eligibility to compete for next year's Ryder Cup European team.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Ram is a two time defending Live Golf Individual champ,
- 10:56Speaker 1: leads the league and points this year. Top ranked Arena
- 11:06Speaker 1: Sablenka believes tennis players should organize a boycott if they
- 11:12Speaker 1: don't start receiving a bigger share of tournament revenue at
- 11:16Speaker 1: the Grand Slams. Sabolenka and fellow number one men's player
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yallnique center among leading players who issued a statement yesterday
- 11:27Speaker 1: expressing deep disappointment over prize money the French Open.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Without us there, there.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Wouldn't be a tournament and there wouldn't be an entertainment.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I feel definitely we deserve to be paid more percentage.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I think at some point we will boycott it. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: feel like that's going to be the only way to
- 11:47Speaker 1: fight for our rights. The players are seeking better representation,
- 11:53Speaker 1: health options pensions from the.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Four Grand Slams.
- 11:58Speaker 1: French Open organizers announced last month they were increasing overall
- 12:02Speaker 1: prize money by ten percent, but the players statement said
- 12:07Speaker 1: the underlying figures tell a very different story, claiming they
- 12:11Speaker 1: will receive a smaller share attorney revenues. The players claim
- 12:17Speaker 1: their share Roland Roland Garros has declined from fifteen and
- 12:23Speaker 1: a half percent in twenty twenty four to fourteen point.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Nine percent this year.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Seventy two million dollars in the purse. So we'll see
- 12:37Speaker 1: what happens there. We'll get our professional tennis correspondent Scott
- 12:45Speaker 1: the wild Man tribally on to talk about that when
- 12:48Speaker 1: the French Open starts, and we hope to visit and
- 12:51Speaker 1: wrap up the season with Steve Denton tomorrow on the program.
- 12:57Speaker 3: All Right, we're going to take a break.
- 12:59Speaker 1: We'll come back going to hear from Dabbo after this
- 13:02Speaker 1: for and co Insurance.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Inco Insurance is now a part of Hub International, bringing
- 13:08Speaker 4: you more choices, better value, and even greater expertise. While
- 13:11Speaker 4: our name has changed, we're still the same local team
- 13:14Speaker 4: you know and trust now with even more to offer
- 13:16Speaker 4: from business insurance to personal protection and employee benefits. We're
- 13:20Speaker 4: still committed to protecting what matters most with the personalized
- 13:23Speaker 4: service you expect now with the strength of Hub International
- 13:26Speaker 4: behind us, more resources, more solutions, still your team and
- 13:30Speaker 4: co Insurance a Hub International company, So you're ready for tomorrow.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Evan Kanty and Michelle are unsportsmanlife.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Orlando Magic have dismissed head coach Jamal Moseley, not unexpected.
- 13:42Speaker 6: What's interesting about this is I believe this is a
- 13:46Speaker 6: very good job.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Billy Donovan should absolutely.
- 13:50Speaker 7: Be on the list, and then the Orlando Magic could
- 13:53Speaker 7: be a team that if the Milwaukee Bucks wanted to
- 13:55Speaker 7: trade Giannis that's an attractive place to me unsportsmanlike.
- 13:59Speaker 8: Listen in mornings from five to Adam is Zone E
- 14:03Speaker 8: ninety three point seven FM.
- 14:25Speaker 3: The late great Richie Vallens.
- 14:29Speaker 1: We're celebrating Sinko to Mayo today. Scott Clintenon will not
- 14:34Speaker 1: be with us tomorrow, but someone will. I'm just not
- 14:40Speaker 1: sure yet. We're efforting that.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Thursday, we've got our Clark Eisenhower Outdoor edition, and Friday
- 14:53Speaker 1: Ryan will be in and Kirk Bowles will.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Be back with me on Friday. Uh.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Greg McElroy does a podcast called Always College Football, and
- 15:08Speaker 1: he visited with I don't want to say in battled.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Clemson was one of the preseason favorites last year and
- 15:17Speaker 1: it just didn't work out for them. Dabbo sparred with
- 15:29Speaker 1: the media at times. He wasn't used to criticism. But
- 15:42Speaker 1: the problem is when you win Natties and you play
- 15:44Speaker 1: for Natties, there's only one way to go from there.
- 15:49Speaker 1: There is only one way to go. And the Clemson
- 15:55Speaker 1: program has not won a Natty or played for a
- 15:59Speaker 1: Natty in a few years. And the Clemson faithful, who
- 16:03Speaker 1: forgot what Clemson was before Dabo got there, are restless.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Dabo is not an ANIO guy. Doesn't matter anymore. He
- 16:15Speaker 1: has to be. He's not a transfer portal guy. He's
- 16:20Speaker 1: a developed the players guy. But that hasn't worked too well.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Here is Greg McElroy with Dabo Sweeney.
- 16:27Speaker 9: Great to be with you. You are as candid as they come.
- 16:30Speaker 6: It feels like when it comes to talking college football
- 16:33Speaker 6: and the state of colleg football, let's start with your team.
- 16:35Speaker 6: It does feel like a very different Clemson team than
- 16:37Speaker 6: the one we've had the last couple of years. A
- 16:39Speaker 6: lot of new faces, a lot of new roles. So
- 16:42Speaker 6: is where kind of is the program right now? What
- 16:44Speaker 6: is the state of the program based on what you've
- 16:46Speaker 6: learned about yourself over the last few weeks in spring?
- 16:49Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, you know, everything for us, it's always
- 16:52Speaker 9: inside out.
- 16:52Speaker 10: You know, there's whether you know, we're never outside in uh,
- 16:56Speaker 10: you know, last year outside where we were great and
- 16:58Speaker 10: we had you know, we're gonna win the national championship
- 17:01Speaker 10: and and you know, we didn't get that done.
- 17:04Speaker 9: And and this year it's we.
- 17:06Speaker 10: Stink and and you know, nobody's any good and we
- 17:10Speaker 10: don't have any players and and neither one of those
- 17:13Speaker 10: are true. You know, it's it's really just the same
- 17:17Speaker 10: for us, and that we start over, new season, new challenge,
- 17:20Speaker 10: and you know, it's not about what people right, it's
- 17:23Speaker 10: not about what people predict. If it was about those things,
- 17:26Speaker 10: then we would have won the national championship last year.
- 17:29Speaker 10: And if it was about those things, I'd have been
- 17:31Speaker 10: gone fifteen years ago. So so it's it's just about
- 17:36Speaker 10: what you do, and it's really what it's about. It's
- 17:38Speaker 10: about the work you do, and you start over every year.
- 17:41Speaker 10: There's always new people. You know, we're a developmental team.
- 17:44Speaker 10: There's always there's always guys that are in our program
- 17:49Speaker 10: that take the next step that people don't really know
- 17:52Speaker 10: about that that you know, every single year there's and
- 17:58Speaker 10: then there's new people that come in that impact you early,
- 18:04Speaker 10: or maybe it's a portal guy or somebody who's filling
- 18:06Speaker 10: a gap like will Help did last year.
- 18:08Speaker 9: So you know, it's just a combination of putting it
- 18:11Speaker 9: all together.
- 18:12Speaker 10: And we signed I think twenty one twenty two high
- 18:14Speaker 10: school kids and ten portal guys and and uh, you know,
- 18:18Speaker 10: most all of those guys, I think we we've got
- 18:20Speaker 10: five or six guys that will be joining us this summer,
- 18:23Speaker 10: but other other than that they were all here, so
- 18:26Speaker 10: you know, people move on. So that's what a lot
- 18:29Speaker 10: of times people want to talk about who was here
- 18:32Speaker 10: or who's not here as opposed to who is here.
- 18:35Speaker 10: And uh so we're excited. I mean, it's a it's
- 18:37Speaker 10: a new it's a change at quarterback. You know, we've
- 18:40Speaker 10: had a starter here for the past three years and
- 18:43Speaker 10: so uh new change there and new competition there. We
- 18:49Speaker 10: we but we like our team. It's a different vibe
- 18:52Speaker 10: for sure, you know, in that these guys are coming
- 18:55Speaker 10: off a season, those those guys that were on this
- 18:57Speaker 10: team and were coming off of our work winning season
- 19:01Speaker 10: in fifteen years.
- 19:02Speaker 9: You know, the last time we had a season like
- 19:04Speaker 9: last year was twenty ten.
- 19:06Speaker 10: Won six games, you know, but we lost five games
- 19:09Speaker 10: by six points or less that year. And it actually
- 19:13Speaker 10: feels similar to me to coming off that twenty ten
- 19:16Speaker 10: season because you know, we had won we won the
- 19:20Speaker 10: division and played for the championship my first year, and
- 19:23Speaker 10: so there was a lot of excitement after the old
- 19:25Speaker 10: nine season going into.
- 19:26Speaker 9: Ten and then our quarterback came back, Kyle Parker.
- 19:29Speaker 10: We had Kyle Parker, Jamie Harper, Andre Ellington, we had
- 19:33Speaker 10: Chris Harrison, and some guys in the ol We had
- 19:35Speaker 10: a really good defense in Daikwon Bauers and Jarvis Chkins
- 19:37Speaker 10: and all.
- 19:38Speaker 9: These guys, and we didn't get off to a good start.
- 19:42Speaker 10: We lost at Auburn in overtime on a miss kick
- 19:46Speaker 10: in overtime, and Auburn went on to win the national championship.
- 19:50Speaker 10: We lost at Florida State in overtime. We lost three
- 19:54Speaker 10: other games by six points or less. And it just
- 19:57Speaker 10: Kyle Parker got hurt. Didn't we didn't play or perform
- 20:01Speaker 10: as well. We had a bad Bowl game, and so
- 20:03Speaker 10: I made some changes on the staff in the off season.
- 20:06Speaker 10: There we I brought in Chad Morse, I hired him.
- 20:10Speaker 10: Nobody knew who Chad Morse was, and and there was
- 20:13Speaker 10: a lot of criticism, a lot of activity. I've only
- 20:15Speaker 10: been the head coach two years and now we just
- 20:17Speaker 10: won six games, so eleven was a big year. And
- 20:21Speaker 10: uh so there was a lot of criticism, a lot
- 20:22Speaker 10: of noise in the off season, a lot of you know,
- 20:25Speaker 10: you suck all the time stuff, and you know, so that.
- 20:29Speaker 9: That's familiar to me.
- 20:30Speaker 10: That's kind of what this feels like this spring, honestly,
- 20:34Speaker 10: And and we were we had a new so I
- 20:36Speaker 10: hired a guy that's only been in college for nine
- 20:39Speaker 10: months or so in Chad Morse. I have this young
- 20:43Speaker 10: quarterback who's been in our seat system for three years
- 20:46Speaker 10: that nobody really.
- 20:46Speaker 9: Knows in taj Boyd.
- 20:47Speaker 10: And and well they're like, well, he couldn't meet Kyle
- 20:50Speaker 10: Parker out and how can he be good? You know
- 20:52Speaker 10: that type of thing, and and uh so, uh a lot.
- 20:56Speaker 9: Of similarities coming that.
- 20:58Speaker 10: We had lost all these guys off of depense that
- 21:00Speaker 10: year that were really good players. De Kwon Jarvis, a
- 21:03Speaker 10: bunch of guys got drafted, Marcus Gilchrist. I mean, we
- 21:07Speaker 10: had a good Byron Max. Well, we had some dudes,
- 21:10Speaker 10: and you know, we came back that next year and
- 21:13Speaker 10: won the league for the first time in twenty years,
- 21:15Speaker 10: won ten games for the first time in twenty years.
- 21:19Speaker 9: But we just kind of put our head down and
- 21:20Speaker 9: did the work.
- 21:21Speaker 10: And you know, we went out recruited and didn't have
- 21:24Speaker 10: a great you know, it's not like we signed the
- 21:26Speaker 10: number one recruiting class in the country and we started
- 21:30Speaker 10: going And I feel similar to that. Again, we've had
- 21:33Speaker 10: fifteen winning seasons in a row. There's only three teams
- 21:37Speaker 10: in the Power forward that can say that last year
- 21:39Speaker 10: was a frustrating and tough season, but it was still
- 21:42Speaker 10: a winning season, and we responded. We stayed together. There
- 21:45Speaker 10: was a lot of negatives, but there were some positives too,
- 21:48Speaker 10: and we've tried to build on that this spring. These
- 21:51Speaker 10: guys have have had a little bit of callousness to them.
- 21:55Speaker 10: I think that's come from the sting of defeat. I mean,
- 21:59Speaker 10: because again, and we lost three games by eleven points
- 22:02Speaker 10: last year. Yeah, three games total eleven points, and we
- 22:05Speaker 10: lost two games on the last play of the game,
- 22:08Speaker 10: in particular early, so we lose to Georgia Tech Game
- 22:12Speaker 10: three on a fifty five yard field goal two seconds ago,
- 22:16Speaker 10: tie game, and so now you're one and two.
- 22:18Speaker 9: We lose seventeen to ten.
- 22:19Speaker 10: LSU, and then we beat I think it was Troy
- 22:23Speaker 10: or somebody, and then we lose on the last play
- 22:27Speaker 10: and now you're one to two and you're basically out
- 22:29Speaker 10: of everything. And man, it was tough, I mean, so
- 22:33Speaker 10: you know, and it affected our team and we didn't
- 22:35Speaker 10: handle it well and we didn't have a season. But
- 22:38Speaker 10: those guys rally, man, because we were knocked to the ground.
- 22:43Speaker 10: And to see those kids stay together and have to
- 22:46Speaker 10: reset our goals. Winning seasons not a goal at Clemson,
- 22:49Speaker 10: but to reset our goals and to go win four
- 22:51Speaker 10: in a row and two of those teams that beat
- 22:53Speaker 10: US Florida State, Louisville, South Carolina, and to finish the
- 22:58Speaker 10: way we did was good and some momentum going into
- 23:01Speaker 10: this thing. But man, we've just kind of reset obviously,
- 23:05Speaker 10: made some changes, brought Chad Morris back, and the same
- 23:09Speaker 10: reasons I hired him in eleven is why I hired
- 23:11Speaker 10: him now and kind of going back to my roots
- 23:14Speaker 10: and some things that I believe in.
- 23:15Speaker 9: And so it's been it's been a good spring.
- 23:18Speaker 10: But it'll be a great spring if we apply all
- 23:21Speaker 10: the things that we did this summer to I mean
- 23:23Speaker 10: the spring to the summer, and everybody will commit to
- 23:26Speaker 10: doing what they got to do to come back being
- 23:28Speaker 10: the better version of themselves whatever area they are, are,
- 23:32Speaker 10: phased they're in in their career, whether it's a fifth
- 23:34Speaker 10: year senior or a new guy just get here. If
- 23:36Speaker 10: everybody will do what they need to do to be
- 23:39Speaker 10: the best version of themselves to this point, then hey,
- 23:42Speaker 10: it'll be a great spring. But I love our staff.
- 23:45Speaker 10: I like the changes that we've made I like our personnel,
- 23:49Speaker 10: and you know, we're excited to go compete.
- 23:53Speaker 6: But you had talked earlier this spring about kind of
- 23:55Speaker 6: a sense of peace and that you are trying to
- 23:58Speaker 6: purge entitlement. Like I really like some of the messaging
- 24:01Speaker 6: that's been used a little bit.
- 24:02Speaker 9: And I'm just.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Knowing you personally and have known you for a really
- 24:05Speaker 6: long time, coach, I feel like you kind of you
- 24:07Speaker 6: yourself as like the underdog, as a guy that's gonna hey,
- 24:10Speaker 6: we're gonna punch up like little old Clemson playing that
- 24:14Speaker 6: with your team, and how you were even at the time,
- 24:17Speaker 6: one of the alpha dog programs in college football, and
- 24:19Speaker 6: you still love flying under the radar a little bit.
- 24:22Speaker 6: So Dore's maybe the preseason expectations more align with what
- 24:27Speaker 6: you have traditionally done and getting the most out of
- 24:31Speaker 6: what your team is capable of accomplishing.
- 24:33Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, I think we've done both in my
- 24:35Speaker 10: tenure here. I mean we've had to deal with both.
- 24:37Speaker 10: I mean we've been exactly we're kind of Yeah, we're
- 24:40Speaker 10: It's very familiar to me. I mean I've been doubted
- 24:44Speaker 10: my whole life. So it's really that that part doesn't change.
- 24:49Speaker 10: It never, never does. Whether we're preseason number one or
- 24:52Speaker 10: you know, top fifty, it really doesn't matter. And all
- 24:56Speaker 10: you got to do every year is look at the
- 24:58Speaker 10: preseason rankings and see how many teams don't even finish ranks.
- 25:02Speaker 10: And especially in today's world, the way rosters turn over,
- 25:05Speaker 10: because you don't really know until people start playing and
- 25:07Speaker 10: people get hurt, there's a lot of things that impact it.
- 25:10Speaker 9: Early momentum in a season I think is critical.
- 25:14Speaker 10: But you know, I mean, it's it just is what
- 25:17Speaker 10: it is, and I just I just teach.
- 25:19Speaker 9: I just always like to teach and.
- 25:21Speaker 10: Get these guys to try to create their life, create
- 25:25Speaker 10: their season, and build our team from the inside out,
- 25:27Speaker 10: because that's really what matters. Teaching you on people, how
- 25:30Speaker 10: to think the right way, building team. I love the
- 25:33Speaker 10: challenge of that, but we've had to do both. I mean,
- 25:35Speaker 10: but at the end of the day, whether we're number
- 25:36Speaker 10: one or top fifty, I mean, at Clemson, we always
- 25:40Speaker 10: got to, you know, have a chip on our shoulder.
- 25:42Speaker 10: I mean, because I mean we I mean, it just
- 25:46Speaker 10: is what it is. We don't have the alumni base
- 25:48Speaker 10: that some places have. We don't have some of the
- 25:51Speaker 10: things that some of the schools that we've played and
- 25:55Speaker 10: had to compete with over the years. Have It's just
- 25:57Speaker 10: the way it is. But I've always liked I mean,
- 25:59Speaker 10: we're three and one against Ohio State, We're four and
- 26:02Speaker 10: two against Notre Dame. I mean, Notre Dame has their
- 26:04Speaker 10: own TV station, they make their own rules, they print
- 26:07Speaker 10: their own money. They got like a money machine in
- 26:09Speaker 10: the backyard or something. I mean, like, I mean, we've
- 26:12Speaker 10: beaten Texa, A and M a couple of times. We've
- 26:14Speaker 10: beaten Oklahoma a couple of times. We've won four in
- 26:16Speaker 10: a row against Auburn. I mean, we've we've beaten Nick
- 26:18Speaker 10: Saban in Alabama in two national championships, and so you
- 26:23Speaker 10: know we've had we've done all of that at Clemson.
- 26:26Speaker 9: I mean again, when.
- 26:27Speaker 10: I got the job here, prior to our tenure here,
- 26:29Speaker 10: Clemson hadn't won the ACC in twenty years, and it
- 26:32Speaker 10: wasn't it wasn't a seventeen team league in those days.
- 26:36Speaker 10: Clemson had won ten games in twenty years. We've had
- 26:39Speaker 10: thirteen ten win seasons in the past fifteen years. You know,
- 26:42Speaker 10: we've won. We punched above our weight class, if you will,
- 26:46Speaker 10: for a long time. But that's just it still comes
- 26:48Speaker 10: down to play in the game. Like Coach Stallin's my
- 26:51Speaker 10: coach at Alabama. It's one of the things he taught
- 26:53Speaker 10: us early on is you know, like it's not about
- 26:58Speaker 10: you know, because when Coach Stallins took over at Alabama,
- 27:01Speaker 10: you know, because I was I was on the ninety
- 27:03Speaker 10: two National Championship team, and when we won the Natty
- 27:05Speaker 10: in ninety two, it was very different. I mean, Alabama
- 27:08Speaker 10: hadn't won the National Championship. It's the seventies, so what
- 27:12Speaker 10: like it you know every other year, you know, or
- 27:14Speaker 10: so like like Alabama hadn't won it since the seventies,
- 27:17Speaker 10: and so I think there was a certain mentality that
- 27:19Speaker 10: had been lost at Alabama and Coach save I mean
- 27:22Speaker 10: coach Coach Stalin's came in and that was one of
- 27:24Speaker 10: the things he taught us early on, was like, Hey,
- 27:27Speaker 10: it's not about you know, I mean, it's not about
- 27:31Speaker 10: the ex's and o's. It's not about it's not about
- 27:33Speaker 10: the you know, how many five stars they got. Like
- 27:36Speaker 10: if we met at the middle of the field, and
- 27:38Speaker 10: with some of these teams that we've played over the
- 27:42Speaker 10: almost two decades i've been here as the head coach,
- 27:45Speaker 10: like we would have lost every time if they if
- 27:48Speaker 10: they would have looked at their roster and looked at
- 27:50Speaker 10: our roster and they go, oh man, you got this
- 27:52Speaker 10: many five, Oh, y'all's budgets, this y'all that winner, you know,
- 27:56Speaker 10: and the crowd with oh and on. But it's not
- 27:59Speaker 10: about that. It's about the players playing the game. And
- 28:03Speaker 10: it's belief, and it's toughness, and it's it's it's synergy
- 28:06Speaker 10: and it's alignment, and it's all. I mean, you can't.
- 28:09Speaker 10: You got to have enough, and we have and we've
- 28:11Speaker 10: always had enough. It's never been the same. It's never
- 28:15Speaker 10: We've never had the same as Alabama or Georgia or
- 28:19Speaker 10: LSU or Ohio State or we've never had the same.
- 28:22Speaker 9: But we've won, and we won't look.
- 28:25Speaker 10: At our recruit My recruiting classes have been like eight
- 28:27Speaker 10: to twenty five since I've been a head coach. I
- 28:30Speaker 10: think the highest ranked recruiting class I had was my
- 28:32Speaker 10: worst recruiting class.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Debo is always working it I like him. Let me
- 28:39Speaker 1: let me preference that he's always working. That we're an
- 28:43Speaker 1: underdog angle. But when you beat Alabama and Nick Saban
- 28:48Speaker 1: for Natty, you do have talent on your team. Yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 1: he has had a lot of talent over the years
- 28:56Speaker 1: on his team and has not played the transfer portal
- 29:02Speaker 1: game well and it's cost him right. Kind of reminds
- 29:07Speaker 1: me of Shryzhevsky at Duke when he said we're not
- 29:09Speaker 1: going to take any one and Dons and he went
- 29:12Speaker 1: like three or four years, which is you know, Duke
- 29:15Speaker 1: time a lifetime without going deep into the playoffs, and
- 29:20Speaker 1: then he changed his mind.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Decided I think we are going to take one and Dons.
- 29:27Speaker 1: We'll play if we have time the next week or
- 29:30Speaker 1: two more from that Dabbo conversation when he goes into
- 29:33Speaker 1: all the nile and portal stuff, We're going to take
- 29:36Speaker 1: a break. Hey, I need to remind you that. Coming
- 29:39Speaker 1: up next week, Tom Doyle has written a book, a
- 29:46Speaker 1: biography called Ringo, A fab life on drummer Ringo Starr.

- 30:08Speaker 1: been a golf writer a long time. Written on Tiger.

- 30:52Speaker 1: It'll look professional because it is professional because you didn't
- 30:56Speaker 1: do it, and it'll look like you spend a lot
- 30:59Speaker 1: of time and thought on this and all you did
- 31:01Speaker 1: is walk in and give them a credit card and
- 31:05Speaker 1: walk out. Go to Galleria and get a gift certificate

- 33:59Speaker 18: Walk into the high school report. I'm Caleb Rapley, and
- 34:03Speaker 18: today we are jumping out to the playeris Fun Center
- 34:05Speaker 18: phone line to visit with the head coach of the
- 34:08Speaker 18: Mumford Mustangs baseball team, mister Aaron Thomas, coach.
- 34:12Speaker 14: Thank you for joining me, Thank you for having me.
- 34:14Speaker 18: Absolutely so. It's been a solid season for your Mustangs,
- 34:18Speaker 18: ending up nine and three in district play and making
- 34:22Speaker 18: the postseason already through the by district round. Your Mustang's
- 34:26Speaker 18: got the win in two games over Dan Berry. So
- 34:30Speaker 18: what have some of your takeaways been from the season.
- 34:33Speaker 18: What are some things that you know have been keys
- 34:35Speaker 18: to success for the Mustangs this year.
- 34:37Speaker 19: Well, some some takeaways is we had a lot of
- 34:40Speaker 19: questions going to the year we had. We had we
- 34:43Speaker 19: had to fill about four to five spots and and
- 34:47Speaker 19: and it took us a long time to to figure
- 34:51Speaker 19: it out. We had a as you know, we had
- 34:53Speaker 19: a long basketball season. We made the state semis and
- 34:56Speaker 19: there was a significant portion of our of our baseball
- 35:00Speaker 19: team that was a part of that. And so we
- 35:03Speaker 19: were kind of fill in spots and trying to figure
- 35:05Speaker 19: out where everybody's gonna fit. And and you know, one
- 35:08Speaker 19: of the takeaways was it's it's taken a while to
- 35:11Speaker 19: figure out where everybody is. But luckily, I think just
- 35:14Speaker 19: at about the right time, we found it.
- 35:17Speaker 18: Yeah, so that's definitely a challenge when it comes to
- 35:19Speaker 18: high school baseball at the two A level, having those
- 35:24Speaker 18: multi sport athletes, you know, I think it's definitely good
- 35:27Speaker 18: for the players to have those different experiences.
- 35:31Speaker 20: I think it.
- 35:32Speaker 18: I know baseball and basketball aren't just super similar sports,
- 35:35Speaker 18: but they're both very athletic sports. So it's definitely an
- 35:38Speaker 18: advantage there in that case. But like you said, trying
- 35:42Speaker 18: to figure out your team, uh, it's a lot shorter.
- 35:45Speaker 9: It's a lot shorter.
- 35:46Speaker 18: Time period between the end of the state championships and
- 35:49Speaker 18: basketball to the beginning of district.
- 35:51Speaker 19: So we we had we had our first district game
- 35:55Speaker 19: when we got four starters from uh from basketball over
- 36:00Speaker 19: spring break and and and one practice before our first game.
- 36:04Speaker 19: Well actually happened, so you know, it was it was
- 36:08Speaker 19: work and we luckily found it.
- 36:10Speaker 14: We figured it out. We started to come together as a.
- 36:12Speaker 19: Team, and and and people have found a role and
- 36:16Speaker 19: found their spots and and and started to step up.
- 36:19Speaker 18: So you mentioned that you had to fill some spots
- 36:22Speaker 18: from last year's team. You know, seniors have graduated. Who
- 36:25Speaker 18: are some players that really stepped up and filled those roles.
- 36:29Speaker 19: So obviously I've had I've had I've got like four
- 36:32Speaker 19: seniors that essentially have been four year starters for me.
- 36:35Speaker 19: And they are the top of the lineup one, two, three, four,
- 36:39Speaker 19: they're my one uh and two pitchers. They're a pitcher
- 36:42Speaker 19: and catcher, you know, and they they they play some
- 36:45Speaker 19: big roles and what you know, obviously you have to
- 36:50Speaker 19: have kids step up.
- 36:51Speaker 14: But but what I feel.
- 36:52Speaker 19: And I've had some of the younger some of the
- 36:54Speaker 19: greener kids step into some roles, but I feel like
- 36:57Speaker 19: early on in the season, the seniors were playing the
- 36:59Speaker 19: role that they're used to playing, where they've had, you know,
- 37:02Speaker 19: some older kids to to help guide them, and they
- 37:04Speaker 19: weren't necessarily ready to to step up and and be
- 37:07Speaker 19: and be those leaders. And they've had good stats, you know,
- 37:10Speaker 19: I've got all four of them are batting over four
- 37:12Speaker 19: hundred and but but finally we played some tougher games,
- 37:16Speaker 19: we got some practice under our belt, and they really
- 37:19Speaker 19: have stepped up. For instance, in the Danbury game, Hagen
- 37:23Speaker 19: Berlin comes up with runners at first, Uh, we're runners
- 37:26Speaker 19: at first and third, and then and you know, just
- 37:29Speaker 19: steps up and hits one out of the park to
- 37:32Speaker 19: pull the game away in the bottom of the sixth.
- 37:34Speaker 14: And it was you know, it's just a big thing.
- 37:36Speaker 19: And so I feel like those guys have stepped into
- 37:39Speaker 19: finally stepped into a role you know that we needed
- 37:42Speaker 19: as as leaders.
- 37:43Speaker 14: As guys who just I it's time for me to
- 37:45Speaker 14: take over the game.
- 37:46Speaker 19: It's time for me to to go ahead and execute
- 37:48Speaker 19: with with the skills that I have and and and
- 37:51Speaker 19: I've been really proud to see that transition, that that
- 37:54Speaker 19: that step up filling in those roles.
- 37:56Speaker 18: So this is the second year since the U i
- 37:59Speaker 18: L split the baseball playoffs into to a Division one
- 38:03Speaker 18: and Division two, so only two teams from each district
- 38:07Speaker 18: going to each bracket. What are your thoughts on this
- 38:10Speaker 18: new playoff format? Do you think it's an advantage to
- 38:12Speaker 18: your team or not?
- 38:14Speaker 19: Well, disadvantage to us, but I think it as a whole,
- 38:17Speaker 19: I think it's good. We The reason it's that disadvantage
- 38:20Speaker 19: us is as we probably should be small school it
- 38:23Speaker 19: would be nice to be small school. Region four to
- 38:28Speaker 19: a big school is one of the more difficult regions,
- 38:31Speaker 19: even our section of the bragg As you know, we
- 38:33Speaker 19: we did not We got third in our district, and
- 38:34Speaker 19: we we played a district champion, a good district champion,
- 38:38Speaker 19: last year's regional finalist, and then found a way to
- 38:40Speaker 19: get it done uh in the first round.
- 38:43Speaker 14: So so that you know, for us, it was tough.
- 38:46Speaker 19: I I do like the format in that it does
- 38:49Speaker 19: kind of give schools some opportunities to match up with
- 38:54Speaker 19: with you generally.
- 38:55Speaker 14: Their their size.
- 38:56Speaker 19: I mean there's some there's some things that can be
- 38:58Speaker 19: done and manipulated and stuff to try to to try
- 39:00Speaker 19: to give yourself different routes. But but as a whole,
- 39:04Speaker 19: I really like it. Were we should be a small school.
- 39:08Speaker 19: But I'm not going to sit and complain. I like
- 39:11Speaker 19: what the uile did? They need to It's a good thing.
- 39:15Speaker 19: It gives more opportunity and and and like next year
- 39:17Speaker 19: we get realigned, we will probably be a small school,
- 39:20Speaker 19: and almost we will be a small school and.
- 39:22Speaker 14: Almost certainly get to go that route.
- 39:24Speaker 19: And so all the enjoy the fruits of playing in
- 39:28Speaker 19: a different region or a different section of the bracket
- 39:31Speaker 19: next year. But as a whole, I really like it.
- 39:33Speaker 19: I think it's good.
- 39:35Speaker 18: Yeah, District twenty six, I think is one of the
- 39:38Speaker 18: smaller districts by enrollment, right, you know, Burton, Iola, ground Top,
- 39:44Speaker 18: Karmeine the other three schools that I believe those are
- 39:47Speaker 18: the three that made the playoffs.
- 39:48Speaker 14: That're right, Roundtop made the playoffs.
- 39:50Speaker 19: So Burton is a small school, Millenno is a small school,
- 39:53Speaker 19: and then Iola, who also does not have just a
- 39:56Speaker 19: large enrollment, right they they're growing.
- 39:58Speaker 18: But so this weekend taking on another district champion in
- 40:02Speaker 18: the Thorndale Bulldogs, they went ten and two in District
- 40:09Speaker 18: twenty seven play. So what are you expecting to see
- 40:12Speaker 18: from them this weekend?
- 40:13Speaker 19: So they're solid, throwing mid eighties, touching ninety and he
- 40:17Speaker 19: was he was really tough. Uh and and and But
- 40:21Speaker 19: at the bottom of their order they had some young guys.
- 40:24Speaker 19: They looked a lot like us where they were. They
- 40:26Speaker 19: were senior heavy, and then they had some guys stepping
- 40:28Speaker 19: in some rolls. But Thorndale, Yeah, they've had kids that
- 40:32Speaker 19: are two to three year starters for.
- 40:34Speaker 14: A while and they won through nine.
- 40:38Speaker 19: Sometimes you can't even tell the difference in the one
- 40:40Speaker 19: batter in the nine batter because they all they're all athletic,
- 40:43Speaker 19: they're all fast, they all really understand how to play
- 40:46Speaker 19: the game. They make it really tough. They put pressure
- 40:51Speaker 19: on you all the way through the lineup.
- 40:52Speaker 18: So what are going to be some of the keys
- 40:53Speaker 18: to victory for you all this weekend?
- 40:55Speaker 19: I as always I tell my kids, I actually have
- 40:57Speaker 19: a scouting report and I put the I put how
- 41:00Speaker 19: we win. It's not enough to know that you're gonna win,
- 41:02Speaker 19: and you got to know how you're gonna win. And essentially,
- 41:07Speaker 19: the keys almost always are are get into counts, right,
- 41:12Speaker 19: have long counts. Get into those guys because Dorndale has
- 41:15Speaker 19: you know, they have a lot of pitching, but they
- 41:17Speaker 19: have a lefty that's going to be really good.
- 41:19Speaker 14: He's going to throw them at eights.
- 41:20Speaker 19: And we've got to work counts, work walks, and then
- 41:25Speaker 19: don't let one mistake turn into two. One mistake is fine,
- 41:28Speaker 19: a single's fine, one walks fine. But if you pile
- 41:31Speaker 19: on a walk with an error and a hit I
- 41:33Speaker 19: pitch and a bad decision, then it turns into a biginning.
- 41:36Speaker 14: And so one run innings don't don't lose your games.
- 41:38Speaker 19: It's the ones with the crooked letters that lose your games,
- 41:41Speaker 19: or crooked numbers that lose your games. And then lastly,
- 41:45Speaker 19: well don't strike out, get the ball and play. And
- 41:47Speaker 19: then and then lastly, like we have to attack the zone.
- 41:50Speaker 19: That's kind of been a little bit of our struggle
- 41:53Speaker 19: all year. Luckily, I feel like we're finding it. But
- 41:55Speaker 19: on the mound, we have to attack the zone and
- 41:58Speaker 19: we have to have we have to have the fast
- 42:00Speaker 19: end the slow stuff working in the zone in order
- 42:04Speaker 19: to in order to win. If we don't do that,
- 42:06Speaker 19: it's gonna be really tough because as Thorndale challenges.
- 42:09Speaker 14: You have to plate.
- 42:10Speaker 19: They make sure that they make sure that the pitches
- 42:12Speaker 19: they're swinging at are good pitches, and so we've got to.
- 42:16Speaker 14: Be in the zone.
- 42:17Speaker 18: All right, Coach, Well, I appreciate your time today. Good
- 42:20Speaker 18: luck this weekend against Thorndale.
- 42:22Speaker 14: All right, thank you.

- 45:15Speaker 23: The Houston Astros dropped the series opener at home last

- 45:20Speaker 23: The Astros actually led to one after the first inning
- 45:23Speaker 23: thanks to a Jose L two BA RBI single folwed
- 45:25Speaker 23: by Isaac Pretas scoring on a wild pitch, but the
- 45:28Speaker 23: Dodgers bats had the upper hand over the Astros pitching
- 45:30Speaker 23: all evening long, as La came back with a pair
- 45:32Speaker 23: in the second and four more runs than the third
- 45:34Speaker 23: to build a substantial lead and cruise to the eight
- 45:37Speaker 23: three win. Ryan Wise had a tough outing on the

- 47:57Speaker 1: Willie tonight with showey Otani pitching for the Dodgers but
- 48:02Speaker 1: not hitting. He is in an O for seventeen slump,
- 48:09Speaker 1: so he is not dhing. He is pitching tonight and
- 48:15Speaker 1: he's still pretty good at that too. By the way, Oh,
- 48:20Speaker 1: this just En Trey. Doctor John Thornton is going to
- 48:27Speaker 1: join me on the show tomorrow as fresh as today's headline,
- 48:32Speaker 1: So that is tomorrow. Scott Clandenna will be out tomorrow,
- 48:37Speaker 1: but John Thornton will join us for our annual bi
- 48:41Speaker 1: annual visit, so I'll always look forward to having him
- 48:45Speaker 1: in studio with us. Speaking of basketball, which I just
- 48:51Speaker 1: was because I mentioned John Thornton. Hoops HQ is a
- 48:56Speaker 1: podcast with Seth Davis and Andy Katz. Recently, one of
- 49:01Speaker 1: their guests was Baylor coach Scott Drew. The Bears did
- 49:06Speaker 1: not make the tournament this year for the first time
- 49:10Speaker 1: in a while. Is this the beginning of the end?
- 49:16Speaker 1: Just as we were talking about Dabbo. It's just such
- 49:20Speaker 1: a new world. We were talking with the writers yesterday.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Can the Baylors of the world consistently compete in athletics?
- 49:30Speaker 3: Now?
- 49:30Speaker 1: Baylor has money, They do have money. They have got
- 49:34Speaker 1: people with money they have got alums with money, but.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Can they compete?
- 49:40Speaker 1: I mean, it's still coaching in my mind, but you
- 49:43Speaker 1: still have to have players.
- 49:45Speaker 3: You gotta have players.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Here is Scott Drew on Hoops HQ with Seth Davis.
- 49:53Speaker 24: You probably don't have as much as you'd like to
- 49:55Speaker 24: have to be able to compete in the transfer portal.
- 49:59Speaker 24: So how do you go about fixing it? How much
- 50:02Speaker 24: time do you spend on it? Is it about getting
- 50:04Speaker 24: that whale that's got a couple billion dollars?
- 50:06Speaker 14: They can just cut you a check or.
- 50:09Speaker 3: If bake sale?
- 50:10Speaker 14: Like what explained us how this works? Yeah, well, I think.
- 50:13Speaker 15: First and foremost every coach would tell you they wish
- 50:17Speaker 15: they had more. And like you said, when the more
- 50:20Speaker 15: nil money you have, the more mistakes and injuries you
- 50:24Speaker 15: can sustain. And it's very similar to the stock market.
- 50:27Speaker 15: I mean, you're never going to get every stock right,
- 50:30Speaker 15: and uh, no college coach is going to get every
- 50:33Speaker 15: portal person right, just like the NBA misses on on
- 50:38Speaker 15: draft picks. Uh And and in sports, you can't buy championships.
- 50:42Speaker 15: And what I mean by that is like Dodgers Yankees
- 50:45Speaker 15: can make more mistakes, but it doesn't guarantee their winning
- 50:48Speaker 15: it every year. So there is there is some luck
- 50:51Speaker 15: in chemistry and everything involved to advance and win, but
- 50:56Speaker 15: definitely the more money you have. And I think every
- 50:58Speaker 15: schools trying to figure you're out, what that sweet spot is,
- 51:02Speaker 15: what's sustainable, what's something that and some do it with
- 51:06Speaker 15: many hands make white work.
- 51:08Speaker 14: Others do it with.
- 51:09Speaker 3: One or two whales.
- 51:10Speaker 9: I mean, I know you two are whales.
- 51:12Speaker 15: And you support your alma maters and they're appreciative of that.
- 51:16Speaker 15: But I can tell you from a coaching standpoint, We'll
- 51:20Speaker 15: control what we can control, and that is whens the
- 51:22Speaker 15: portal open and who can we recruit from there and
- 51:26Speaker 15: hopefully that with the contractual language, allows people to have
- 51:31Speaker 15: options to maybe stay at a school, graduate from a school,
- 51:36Speaker 15: and those things I think helped the game more than
- 51:41Speaker 15: There's no league that has free agency every year. I mean,
- 51:44Speaker 15: if the NBA did it every year, I don't think
- 51:47Speaker 15: that would be good for the game. And at the
- 51:50Speaker 15: end of the day, most college kids are going to
- 51:54Speaker 15: use that college degree.
- 51:56Speaker 24: I know a lot of injuries as well, but did
- 51:58Speaker 24: not make the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Since twenty eighteen.
- 52:03Speaker 14: I believe.
- 52:05Speaker 24: You do not get dumber as a basketball coach.
- 52:08Speaker 3: You are still a great basketball coach. But it does feel.
- 52:11Speaker 24: Like this new model has been not great for Baylor.
- 52:15Speaker 24: Tell me what's going on.
- 52:17Speaker 15: Well, I think first year, right, we had the year
- 52:20Speaker 15: we won it all, the year before we would have
- 52:21Speaker 15: been a number one seed, The year after we were
- 52:23Speaker 15: number one seed, and then the next couple of years
- 52:28Speaker 15: we made the tournament, won a game in the tournament,
- 52:31Speaker 15: and in advance. Some of that depends on matchups, Some
- 52:34Speaker 15: of that depends on your injuries and whatnot. One thing
- 52:38Speaker 15: that's been tough for us is the first seventeen years,
- 52:42Speaker 15: we had one aco injury, and now in the last
- 52:44Speaker 15: like six years, we've got six.
- 52:46Speaker 14: So it's like we have hit. Last year we basically had.
- 52:50Speaker 15: Three season ending injuries and within il you, I think
- 52:54Speaker 15: most teams probably don't have the depth that they used
- 52:57Speaker 15: to have because once that money runs out, then the
- 53:01Speaker 15: quality of player tends to go down.
- 53:04Speaker 14: So instead of having.
- 53:06Speaker 15: Ten, eleven, twelve quality, thirteen quality players, maybe that nil
- 53:11Speaker 15: sour you're paying for nine and then after that there's
- 53:14Speaker 15: a drop off, and if you get a couple of injuries,
- 53:17Speaker 15: it's hard to go through the rigors of any power
- 53:20Speaker 15: for a conference or any good conference with six or
- 53:24Speaker 15: seven guys and staying out of foul trouble and whatnot.
- 53:27Speaker 15: So with us, every year you try to get better
- 53:29Speaker 15: at what you do. Hopefully I'm not, as you say,
- 53:33Speaker 15: I haven't gotten dumber. But I found that with Phil Jackson.
- 53:37Speaker 15: You know, he won three championships, Mike Michael went played
- 53:40Speaker 15: pro baseball, and then he didn't win the championship, and
- 53:43Speaker 15: then Michael came back, and then he wins three more.
- 53:45Speaker 15: And I tell you it's amazing how all that works.
- 53:47Speaker 13: Right.
- 53:48Speaker 15: But at the end of the day, we are really
- 53:52Speaker 15: excited about the class we've been able to put together
- 53:54Speaker 15: right now, and really excited about lessons learned in the
- 54:00Speaker 15: asked and you you constantly try to change and just
- 54:02Speaker 15: get better at what you do. And that's that's exciting
- 54:05Speaker 15: for me.
- 54:07Speaker 1: There you go, that's Scott true interesting opinion on on
- 54:15Speaker 1: the on the transfer in the nil stuff right with
- 54:17Speaker 1: the depth. Very interesting, Uh and probably right. And that's
- 54:24Speaker 1: something I thought about on any with any of the
- 54:28Speaker 1: college sports level. It's like you're you're paying a lot
- 54:31Speaker 1: of money for top guys. You you better be good
- 54:34Speaker 1: developing on the bottom end, right, because you're gonna need
- 54:38Speaker 1: it in any sport.
- 54:39Speaker 3: It doesn't matter. You're gonna have injuries. Uh, you're gonna
- 54:43Speaker 3: have some issues.
- 54:44Speaker 1: So if that's on coaches to develop, right, you can't
- 54:50Speaker 1: have on a basketball team. I don't think no matter
- 54:55Speaker 1: what the budget is, ten five stars, right, if you're
- 55:01Speaker 1: really good, you may have three five stars, but you
- 55:04Speaker 1: also might have four five or six three stars. And
- 55:08Speaker 1: that's where the development and the coaching and the chemistry,
- 55:14Speaker 1: by the way, where that comes in. Marble Craft has
- 55:20Speaker 1: been part of our community for oh, let's say, over
- 55:24Speaker 1: twenty five years. Joe Orsak and the staff at marble
