- 2:52those in need. And this is kind of Rob Reel's baby, so he's
- 2:55going to join us talk about that punch of phone calls and texts are welcome
- 2:59to alright, one of my favorite subjects. You know what it is,
- 3:01it's food. Charleston's Restaurant Week is coming up soon. It starts Tuesday,
- 3:06January thirtieth, then we'll run through Saturday, the third of February. Candace
- 3:08Nelson is the director of Marketing and Communications for Capital Market and as she said
- 3:13in her email to me, that's her daytime job. Her nighttime job is
- 3:15as a volunteer for Restaurant Week. Candace Nelson joins us now to par Marstore
- 3:20Studio, Canadace. Good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning,
- 3:23thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Tell us exactly what
- 3:25goes on, candas at restaurant Week. So Restaurant Week is the most exciting
- 3:30time of year in my opinion. So each restaurant that participates will choose a
- 3:35three course meal at a fixed price, and you have two options for each
- 3:40course, So that means you can pick one of two different things for an
- 3:44appetizer, one of two for an entree, and one of two for a
- 3:46dessert. So is really the perfect time to try out a new restaurant or
- 3:52maybe check out one of your old favorites and see what they are featuring.
- 3:54Now, how did this whole idea of restaurant week come about? Here in
- 3:58the Charleston here? What's little histor right behind this? Do you do?
- 4:00You know that? Yeah? So about you know ten years ago we had
- 4:06eleven years ago, we had the water crisis, as we all know,
- 4:11in ten years ago yesterday, yes, the ninth, that's right, so
- 4:16we know that. You know, restaurants were struggling. There was a lot
- 4:21of folks who were out of a job at that point because we just everything
- 4:26was a little bit unsure. So Buzzfood Service decided to come up with an
- 4:30idea of trying to help out the servers, the service industry, and our
- 4:34local restaurants. So they partnered with them to create this concept of Charleston Restaurant
- 4:40Weeks. So our very first one was in twenty fourteen, and we have
- 4:45had one every year since except during COVID. So ten years of Restaurant Weeks,
- 4:50eleven years in existence. Okay, all right, And so the restaurants
- 4:55themselves, I mean they go and we're going to get to that to those
- 4:58that are participating in the moment, but that the restaurants themselves go all out
- 5:00for this candice, they do, they can have a lot of fun with
- 5:03it. So a few years ago we introduced a variable price point so that
- 5:08we can really incorporate restaurants on the whole spectrum from fine dining to you know,
- 5:13a local pizza joint. So they have a lot of fun with it
- 5:15because they know that reservations will start filling up, so they can go all
- 5:19out and maybe you know, order some specialty cuts of meat or some specialty
- 5:26ingredients and really have fun with their customers. Well, and the restaurants,
- 5:30some of the owners tend to be a little bit competitive too, and they
- 5:31can have a little fun with it, as you said, right, Yeah,
- 5:34absolutely, we have some that have been doing it every year, so
- 5:39hoos Bridge Road Bistro and Ichemon have done it every year that we've had it,
- 5:44so they always see, you know, who comes out with the newest
- 5:47fun item. And since you started dropping names there, I mean, can
- 5:50you can you give us the folks that are going to be involved. Yes,
- 5:54So just today we've released our fullest of restaurants that are participating. That
- 6:00is ten ten Bridge Adelphia, Barcada's Black Sheep Bricks and Barrel's Bridge Road Bistro,
- 6:08dem Two Brothers, their new downtown location, DT Prime, Fernbank,
- 6:13Itchabon the Lookout Bar and Grill Restaurante, a Bruze, Sim's Uptown Cafe,
- 6:19so Host Tidewater Grill, and also knew this year the Volstead Room of the
- 6:25Hell Street Center. And what I like about that is you mentioned a couple
- 6:27of new ones in there. You mentioned fern Bank and the Volstad place.
- 6:30I mean, those are those are new, and that's a great way for
- 6:33people here in the Charleston area to go and to patronize these these businesses because,
- 6:39let's face it, I mean, as you said, Candice, this
- 6:41whole thing was born out of the water crisis, and then we get out
- 6:45of that and everything's going pretty well, and then a little thing called COVID
- 6:48comes along and so it had to be canceled. So it's been a rough
- 6:53ten years for the restaurant community here in not only in downtown Charles but in
- 6:59all the kan Valley for that matter. Yeah, absolutely, And you know,
- 7:02these are friends and family in our communities who need our support. So
- 7:08one of the things that we always really encourage is to turn up the tips.
- 7:12So when you're going out to eat, make sure that you are tipping
- 7:15your server as well, because they will be very busy that week. Yeah,
- 7:18and you're going to have the menus released at a later time because they
- 7:23all come up with a special menu items for a restaurant week. Is that
- 7:26right? That's right. So today is actually the deadline for our restaurants to
- 7:30submit their menus. So by the end of today, hopefully we'll have a
- 7:32good idea of what everybody's serving and we'll get that together for everybody within the
- 7:36next couple of days, and make sure to start making your reservation. And
- 7:41I know people again, Candas and again we're talking with Candace Nelson about Charles's
- 7:44Restaurant Week and it runs January the thirtieth through the Saturday, February third.
- 7:48I know people that really, I mean, I'm a foodie, you know,
- 7:53and there are people that look forward to this every year and they circle
- 7:56it on their calendar and you know, there's you know, and they're getting
- 7:58out and there supporting these local businesses, and as you said, because in
- 8:01other cities that have these sorts of things, sometimes it tends to be nothing
- 8:07but the high end or the high brow play and we have places like that
- 8:09in Charleston. But it's also nice to have, as you said, some
- 8:11more local, localized things and some simpler fare if you will. Yeah,
- 8:16absolutely, you can still participate in restaurant Week, whether you you know,
- 8:20want a prime cut of steak or whether you want, you know, a
- 8:26simple sandwich. So either way you can get out there, try something new
- 8:31or return to an old favorite. But supporting the local restaurants, nonetheless,
- 8:35that's what it's all about. Supporting these local, local restaurants. Nine sixteen

- 9:00where can people learn more? I know we don't have the menus yet,
- 9:01but we do have the list. Where can people learn more about a Candice?
- 9:05Absolutely, if you check out Charleston, WV Restaurant Week on Facebook,
- 9:09we'll post all of our updates right there for you, all right, and
- 9:13we're going to have you back when the menus come out, And that's what
- 9:16I'm looking forward to. Maybe a little sneak preview of that, and those
- 9:20will be and again today is the deadline for that right now. If a
- 9:24restaurant is listening right now, somebody one of the owners of the restaurants or
- 9:26managers or whatever listening, Is it too late for the restaurants to sign up
- 9:31to be a part of this. No, if a restaurant is still interested,
- 9:35you know, we've had our big release of the main ones, but
- 9:39if you still want to participate, reach out to us. We can see
- 9:41what we can do. All right, Well, it sounds good. We're
- 9:43looking forward to it again. Restaurant Week here in Charleston is Tuesday, January
- 9:48thirtieth through Saturday, February third, and again more information is available. Oh
- 9:54yeah, okay, I've got to pass this along to you. I got
- 9:56a text to my personal phone from some guy, some Evan Osborne guy.
- 10:01You know that guy from the Capitol Market boss. Yeah, yeah, I
- 10:05wants to know where you and I are going to be taking him. So
- 10:07I think the obvious answer is so hosed. Yeah, yeah, well it's
- 10:11that Capital Market yeah and delicious. That makes Ryan, our producer, very
- 10:16happy as well when you say that, you know he's got ties there.
- 10:18So all right. Uh so Evan, I guess we're going to so host.
- 10:22So Candace and I are taking This is Evin Osborne's frequent guest here on
- 10:24the show, So he texts my personal phone here to just tell me.

- 14:18our studios eleven eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston drop us off some new
- 14:24socks to be given to those in need. And it's kind of something that
- 14:28Rob is spearheaded. We're gonna talk about that with Rob coming up a little
- 14:30bit later on Chressa Gallagher from American True Prosperity stops buying out cressin. Good
- 14:35morning, welcome to the show, Happy new year, how were you hey,
- 14:37Dave doing great, Happy to be here. And Creston also pointed out
- 14:41to me that it's also his birthday week. Is that right? Yep?
- 14:43I'm gonna be watching the Cleveland Browns hopefully win on my birthday. Okay.
- 14:48Who the Browns playing? Now? Remind me of they play the Texans?
- 14:50Okay, I think they should be able to win. Yeah? Yeahah are
- 14:52long? I mean obviously a long time brown long, long time Browns fan.
- 14:56I've only seen three winning seasons since I've been alive, so it's a
- 15:00long rune. Well, I wish my brother in law lives in Cleveland and
- 15:03he's hardcore anything to do with Cleveland from the Guardians, the you know,
- 15:07the Calves on down. So so for my brother in law, Ron,
- 15:11and for a couple of other of my friends, I'll hope the Browns do
- 15:15well. Of course, I'm a Cowboys fan, and this is our year.
- 15:16We're going to win the Super Bowl? Yeah every year? Right right?
- 15:18Yeah? Okay, all right, So the legislature Christen is back in
- 15:22Town, the Greatest Show on Earth or something like that. What are some
- 15:24of the things that you folks are going to be keeping an eye on as
- 15:26we head into the session, So, Dave, we released our Pathway to
- 15:30Prosperity Leslee of Agenda an update to that, and we've been releasing that Americans
- 15:35for Prosperity since twenty eighteen. It acts as a roadmap for lawmakers interested in
- 15:39expanding freedom and opportunity for all West Virginians. We released an update because last
- 15:45year we had largest tax cut in state history, but we also had a
- 15:48bill that dealt with student journalism, protecting their First Amendment right, and clarification
- 15:52on our open enrollment law. So you know, Osley Republican majorities, especially
- 15:58under Governor Jim Justice, have done a lot in the last eight to ten
- 16:02years. They've passed Ready to Work, They've controlled spending leading to those tax
- 16:06cuts, they passed the Versus Universal ESA program, the Hope Scholarship program.
- 16:11They've done a lot, but there's more that needs to be accomplished. I
- 16:14just have a feeling given this as Governor Genjustice's last legislave session, he's running
- 16:18for the US Senate. That's gonna be a quiet session, but you never
- 16:22know. I don't know. I mean normally I would say that, but
- 16:26then and I may get into this a little bit later on. I know
- 16:29we've got some people that are I know that that center. President Blair and
- 16:33say Senator Mike Stewart will be on the show on Friday. By the way,
- 16:37have have already put out there that they're gonna they're gonna push death penalty
- 16:41stuff this year. The Democrats have said that we may see something on cannabis,
- 16:48introducing recreational cannabis. So normally I would say, you're right, but
- 16:51I don't know. Yeah, and yeah, with this being the last year,
- 16:55you know, we're taking a step back and we're going to probably look
- 16:56forward to working with the next governor, given there's a lot on our agenda
- 17:00to accomplish. But obviously Leslau's its own creature, its own beast, so
- 17:03we'll see what happens. And speaking of the governor, you have already announced
- 17:07your endorsement for governor. Oh, yes, and governor. We endorsed Patrick
- 17:11Morrissey, we've endorsed AFP Action also endorsed Rally More for US Congress, and
- 17:15we released two more endorsements this past week. Okay, and that's really the
- 17:18reason I wanted to talk to you. But before we get to that,
- 17:22you also issued a press release crescent at the top it said eight years of
- 17:26policy wins as it pertains to your group of Americans for prosperity. Now,
- 17:30you kind of touched on those a little bit earlier. But what are some
- 17:32of those things you mentioned right to work? What are some other breaking breaking
- 17:34down as to why you see those as wins for the people of West Virginia.
- 17:38Yes, So the Repulican majority took over ten years ago and we've controlled
- 17:44spending, leading to record surpluses, record tax cuts. We also passed the
- 17:48Hope Scholarship with this is the state's first universal ESA program, which honestly eight
- 17:52to ten other states have followed our lead on that. So we were ground
- 17:56zero for education reform in this country. We passed right to work, We've
- 18:00done open enrollment stuff, First Amendment rights, something, criminal justice. We've
- 18:06chipped away at a certificate and need laws. There's a lot that needs to
- 18:08be done, but Republicans should be proud of the last eight to ten years.
- 18:12And there's no there's no reason to believe that any of that, as
- 18:18far as the numbers go, is going to change in my opinion. I
- 18:21know you folks in the organization consider yourself to be nonpartisan, and you just
- 18:25want the quality men and women, in your opinion, that are going to
- 18:27do what you see as being the best path forward for West Virginia. You
- 18:32don't really care whether Republican Democrat. But I mean the majority of them you
- 18:37know are going to be Republicans, and I don't see I don't see that
- 18:41changing anytime soon. No, I don't see that changing either. I think
- 18:45it's a sad state of the Democrat Party in this state at least. But
- 18:48we're always focused on principal lawmakers, those who really want to affect West Virginia
- 18:52for the better, make it a better place to live, work and raise
- 18:56a family. So we don't care about partisanship, we don't care about factions.
- 19:00We care about those who are willing to do the right things to make
- 19:03West Virginia a better place. And we've seen cresten a lot of announcements here
- 19:10lately in West Virginia the last couple of years I was talking. I mentioned
- 19:12this on the show that I don't know that during my lifetime that I have
- 19:17seen as many economic breakthrough announcements as what we've had, you know, from
- 19:22New Cores and last week it was it was LG and what's going on in
- 19:26various parts of West Virginia. And I would imagine not to put words in
- 19:30your mind, but you folks at Americans for Prosperity feel that a lot of
- 19:34the changes that have been made in under the Dome have led to a lot
- 19:38of these things. Yeah, when you get government out of the way,
- 19:41when you lessen regulations, when you cut taxes, when you allow people to
- 19:45pursue their own own version of the American dream, you're going to have results
- 19:49from that. I think now West Virginia has been been a net migrator into
- 19:53the states, and more people are moving into West Virginia than moving out.
- 19:57And Governor Justice, he's had a lot of big wins, a lot of
- 20:00big companies come to stay a lodge, job creation, and that's because of
- 20:03the Republican policies and principal lawmakers that are passing those pro growth policies at the
- 20:08state level. And I don't think that people, you know, we kind
- 20:11of gloss over some of these statistics and some of these numbers from time to
- 20:15time, Crescent, But the fact that we finally do have more people moving
- 20:19in than a movie, that's a pretty big deal. That's a big deal
- 20:22as a West Virginian by choice. You know, I came here before it
- 20:26was cool to come to West Virginia, and I hope more people continue to
- 20:29follow our lead. You know, it's easy to come to West Virginia.
- 20:32It's a beautiful state. It's the cost of living is it is tremendous.
- 20:36You have a lot of opportunity to be in your community, make an impact.
- 20:38Know your business owners, know your elected officials. So I'm glad that
- 20:42people are finally seeing what West Virginia really can be. We've got something special
- 20:48here in West Virginia. I know hobbies talk about this on the show,
- 20:49and I've had other guests that have talked on it talked about it as well.
- 20:53And that is as you said, we know our elected officials in West
- 20:59Virginia. We can pick up the phone and call them and their story after
- 21:02story about you know, fill in company, act me. Something is going
- 21:07to come to West Virginia and they have a question about something. Somebody from
- 21:11the world of Economic development just says well, let's just let's call the governor.
- 21:14And this is something this is not anything new. I mean this has
- 21:15been around for a while. Well, let's just call the guy who's over
- 21:18the Department of Commerce, let's just call a secretary of state, or let's
- 21:22just call whoever pick up the phone, call them right right there. And
- 21:23that does not go on in other areas. Yeah, I mean West Virginia.
- 21:27What's the sayings A, it's just a big town. It's a small
- 21:30big town. The entire state. Everyone knows everyone. It's easy to get
- 21:34in touch with people. As someone that used to work for the Department of
- 21:37bag we had conversations with folks all the time, and they always talked about
- 21:40how willing and how able we were to help them get that We got Mountain
- 21:45Top Beverage up in Morgantown, and they came to West Virginia because they felt
- 21:48like we wanted them here. And I feel like a lot of states lose
- 21:52that when you're a big state like Ohio or Virginia or Pennsylvania, because you're
- 21:56just another business to them. But here your family. And that's an important
- 22:00thing to point out, is because you know, I will have sometimes text
- 22:03of the shows, and people will want to, you know, give credit
- 22:06to this person or that person whatever. They're choosing West Virginia for a reason,
- 22:11you know, And no matter what you thought about the different things that
- 22:14have come out of this administration in Washington, you know, they chose West
- 22:18Virginia over Kansas, or over Illinois or whatever. That's not based in that
- 22:23that's a West Virginia thing. Well, they like doing business here. Yeah,
- 22:27And clearly Washington deca is broken. It's hard to get anything done in
- 22:32Washington these days. The partisanship, the infighting is so bad. That's really
- 22:36hard to get things done here. But at the state level, a lot
- 22:37of states are getting things. That's done in West Virginia has seen a lot
- 22:41of change over the last eight to ten years, despite the lack of camaraderie
- 22:45in DC. Doctor Crusa Gallagher again from Americans for Prosperity textas Dave Island showing

- 23:14in Charleston. All right, Chris, and I said, you've already given
- 23:17us some of the endorsements that you have for Americans for prosperity, but you
- 23:18have a few more to lay on us. I understand. Yeah. This
- 23:22last week we endorsed two people there are running for re election in state Senate.
- 23:26State Senate President Craig Blair. He's been a great person to work with.
- 23:30He's been a leader at the State Senate. Frankly, I don't think
- 23:34we get tax cruts done without him, because when that policy was on his
- 23:37last leg, he acted as a mediator, He brought some he put some
- 23:41personalities in the corner, and he really got that tax cut across the across
- 23:45the finish line. Without him, it doesn't get done. So we endorsed
- 23:49him for his re election campaign in Senate District fifteen. We also endorsed someone
- 23:55in his neck of the woods, Senator Rutgers, Patricia Rutger. She was
- 23:59the architect of the Universal ESA program, the Hope Scholarship program. She's been
- 24:03a policy champion, She's done the right things time and time again. Without
- 24:07her, I don't think we see the educational reform that sweeping across the country.
- 24:11I mentioned eight to ten states have also expanded their programs. I think
- 24:15what was that Iowa just did it. So what you know, we were
- 24:18ground zero for the educational reform coming out of COVID, and Patricia Rutger was
- 24:25one of those people that made it happen. So we endorsed both of them.
- 24:27Ser Senator Craig Blair and Center Patricia Rucker. We look forward to working
- 24:30with them and making sure they win reelection. What is the endorsement selection process
- 24:37like for your group? Because every group, you know, from a union
- 24:41to a political action committee, whatever, they they all do it a little
- 24:42bit differently. I mean, obviously you look at their record and things that
- 24:45they've done in the past, but sometimes you may endorse someone that doesn't have
- 24:48a record a fall on. How does that process work out? Yeah,
- 24:52we have a vetting process, so we look at how they've voted on certain
- 24:55policy issues, how they've championed what's their impact on the state of West Virginia.
- 25:00Yeah, so we have a vetting process people go through and we want
- 25:03to make sure our impact is felt because a lot of organizations they release endorsements,
- 25:07they maybe send you a pack check, they put you in their newsletter,
- 25:10but they don't do much beyond that. Americans for Prosperity is a grassroots
- 25:14organization, so we go out knockdoors, we do paid media, so we
- 25:17when we endorse someone, we're in it to win it. So that's a
- 25:19little bit different from other organizations. So we're a little more selective on who
- 25:22we endorse and we make sure that they're going to win. So, but
- 25:26we have a vetting process and we make sure we're endorsing principal law makers that
- 25:30want to make a difference in the state. When can we expect some more
- 25:33endorsements to come down. We definitely have some more endorsements coming down soon.
- 25:37In the House of Delegate races. You know, the filing period just happened
- 25:41start staring day, so we're letting that landscape play out a little bit,
- 25:44but I know of some House of Delegate candidates that will be endorsing, so
- 25:48I imagine those will be coming down in the next couple weeks or so.
- 25:51And do you get how far down do you go on the ballot? I
- 25:52mean, I know you primarily you're looking at people that make the laws,
- 25:56make the decisions and that, but I mean, how far did do you
- 25:59get involved in the county races at all? Like a county commissioner share for
- 26:03something like that. We typically don't get involved in county races. You know,
- 26:06We've endorsed in the governor's race, Patrick Morrissey for that AFB Action,
- 26:10endorsed rally More for Congress and that open congressional seat. We mostly focus on
- 26:15those state wide races, federal races, and then House of Elegant and State
- 26:18center races. So that's where we'll be at this election cycle. And you
- 26:22and jas tomplin A both been on the show numerous times, but for people
- 26:26that have never heard you on the show, give us the whole basic idea
- 26:27behind Americans for Prosperity Sure. American for Prosperity is a grassroots organizations, the
- 26:33premier grass roots organization in this country. Our goal is to connect average citizens
- 26:37with their lawmakers through knocking doors to embolden those lawmakers to make transformational policies that
- 26:42affect and better community for us all across the state. We're in thirty seven
- 26:48states, so we have thirty seven state chapters where we affect all fifty states
- 26:52though, but you know, when it comes to door knocking and getting people
- 26:56elected, we're the premier organization in this country. Well, wish you guys
- 27:00the best of luck because as you as we said of the big show is
- 27:06starting. I know you guys will be at the Capitol a whole lot and
- 27:08keeping a close eye on things. We'll have you on a couple of times
- 27:11during the session and if you do anything, give us a yell. It's

- 32:15Robert, by the way, will you please stop telling people that Chuck Norris
- 32:20is coming to Clindonon. I did we not? We had a we had
- 32:23a situation here Ryan yesterday. The KWS truck's name is Truck Norris. Okay,
- 32:30it is Truck Norris. Beautiful, beautiful truck is uh and the folks
- 32:35at East Coast T's by the way, did a great, great job on
- 32:37that. Uh to truck Norris is the truck's name. That's the name.
- 32:43Okay, the truck is going to be accompanying you. Well, I think
- 32:46can we drive it? He doesn't drive itself to a live broadcast in Clendennon
- 32:52this weekend. Yes, Blanche's family Diner, nuone until too still by seeing
- 32:53me get your picture made with truck truck no Norris. Somehow it got started
- 33:00it on social media yesterday that we were advertising that Chuck Norris was going to
- 33:05be at Blanche's dietary in Clintennon this Saturday. That is not the case.
- 33:08It is truck, not Chuck. Correct the Chinese whispers the telephone game.
- 33:14Someone was only half paying attention. Maybe needed to change the battery in a
- 33:19particular listening device. Okay, yeah, but we had a little fun.
- 33:22It's a little fun. And the folks at Blanches had a little fun with
- 33:25it, as I saw their social media posts about that. And he'll be
- 33:28there. What's the occasional just because you're hungry? Yes? Is it hungry?
- 33:32And here is it just me? Yeah? So yeah, we're gonna
- 33:36have some great grub and just to have a time. I need some old
- 33:38fashioned home cooking and they got it here. Yeah they do. Yeah,
- 33:43Blanches in Clindenna. You will be there this Saturday from New to two with
- 33:45Truck Norris. All right, speaking of trucks, we're teaming up with our
- 33:49title sponsors for this show. That's Thornhill Auto Groove for something one week from
- 33:52tomorrow. Talk about that. So I want to paint a little picture here.
- 33:58I was raised mostly by my grandparents, my paternal grandparents, who when
- 34:01the big white van showed up and invited my older brother and my twin sister
- 34:06and I not to live with my parents, my parents anymore. My grandparents
- 34:10still had five of their boys in the house, and so they like,
- 34:14we could take we could take the boys, but the girl that that's that's
- 34:17a long way of setting up that. At one point they then brought in
- 34:22one of my male cousins. There were eight boys sharing one bedroom in this
- 34:25house. We slept in shifts. This was a small family farm where we
- 34:30didn't have much of nothing, and so on the on the brink of poverty
- 34:35for most of my childhood. One of the things I quickly got to understand
- 34:38was being the youngest and the smallest at the time you got things handed down,
- 34:44you got what was left, what was still usable. And that translates
- 34:50into our displaced population, our homeless folks around they get they get what's left,
- 34:54they get what others toss aside. So when they they go to shelters,
- 35:00when they go to service providers, you know what the most request the
- 35:05most requested thing by folks who are living on the street, who are homeless.
- 35:10You know what that is? Socks? It is socks. Now.
- 35:14I know people want to think, you know, underwear and feminine hygiene products,
- 35:16and those are very high on the list, but the thing is socks.
- 35:22And I remember having just a giant basket of socks in the middle of
- 35:25this bedroom that you just you had to find too that came close and you
- 35:30know, this was a family that had a home. And so it led
- 35:32me to thinking about, well, what little thing can we do, how
- 35:36can we eat this elephant of all these folks who are living on the streets
- 35:40in the Knaw Valley, who don't have a place to barely change clothes quite
- 35:46frankly, And so we have devised this WVRC Media inaugural Drop your Socks Drive
- 35:53through Sock Drive next Thursday, week from tomorrow seven am to six pm.
- 35:59You come rolling through our parking lot at eleven eleven Virginia Street East with a
- 36:02package of brand new socks. You drop them off. Maybe you want to
- 36:06do a cash or a check donation. Mountain Mission can take those and we
- 36:09will help keep folks warm this winter. That's our whole goal. Yeah,
- 36:14just socks. So and this is one of those things we do. We
- 36:16do two or three for a year. A lot of these have been you
- 36:20know, thanks to you, because we did the Turkey Drop and it was
- 36:22it was I mean, the first time we did the Turkey Drop, it
- 36:24was beyond our Oh how successful it would be. Yeah, vastly exceeded my
- 36:30expectation, not not my expectation for how kind West Virginians are to one another,
- 36:34but just the numbers beyond what I could have hoped for our first time
- 36:37around. And I'm hoping we'll be in the same sort of situation a week
- 36:40from now. And this is again kind of your your baby, but we're
- 36:45all going to be involved. I mean, V one hundred to beat the
- 36:46Mountain, the Station, We're all going to be taking part in it.
- 36:52Yeah, everybody is gonna take a turn outside and say hello, hold up
- 36:55outside. Yeah, the same thing about it being outside outside, Well,
- 37:00I mean it's all good, it's all good. At kidding, I say,
- 37:05think about the folks who are living in doorway twenty four to seven and
- 37:07you're gonna be outside for an hour very you'll be fine. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:10I'll be okay. And so we're just asking people. It's just real
- 37:15simple. Just go to whatever your favorite place is to buy socks and get
- 37:21a couple packages. If you can afford one package, if you can afford
- 37:23a box of them, I mean, you know, with thirty or forty,
- 37:27that's fine. Or we'll take cash or check donations as well. Yes.
- 37:30One of the great things about about collecting socks is there's really only two
- 37:34sizes, adult and kid. That's pretty much it. I mean fits sizes
- 37:38seven to thirty whatever. It's a package of socks. And you reach a
- 37:45certain age where getting the socks for Christmas actually becomes a thing again, where
- 37:49you're like happy to get the new socks. So remember that maturation process.
- 37:53Once you get to be our age, you're like, hey, those are
- 37:55some pretty pretty dog on nice socks, pretty warm and comfortable. So remember
- 38:00that feeling and you're gonna be able to give it to what several folks in
- 38:05need, some of our neediest friends and neighbors. Next Thursday the eighteenth,
- 38:09the WVRC media drop your socks drive through. Anybody who has been in basic
- 38:15training is laughing at that name, okay, And I can't explain why on
- 38:19the radio because there's a don't give there's a connotation. I'll tell you off
- 38:24the air if you get me fired from this place, I'm just gonna hang
- 38:28out downstairs with you, okay, So don't get me fired, all right,
- 38:30Believe me. I can't afford. Uh, I can't afford for either
- 38:34of us to get fired from this place. Again. Only one of us
- 38:37has been fired once. That wasn't me. But that's besides the point.
- 38:42So it's a basic training thing. I'll have to look at it. What
- 38:44to get the Google machine out and figure that out exactly what that is.
- 38:46Everybody who has been in basic training has had a drill instructor holler words that
- 38:52yes, okay, there there are a couple of soldier, sailors, marines
- 38:54and airmen who are laughing hysteria. I was going to say, there are
- 38:58people out there now listed to this God, I know exactly what he's talking
- 39:00about. It Those and those like myself that didn't survive cub scouts, Sir,
- 39:04are thinking, I don't know what the hell this guy's talking about.
- 39:07Before that coworker three cubicles over convinces you to explain it, he'll end up
- 39:12in HR. You will end up in Ashley's office, sou, a place
- 39:15where you and I have been before. I got a text here for we,
- 39:19Robert says, do footies or ankle cuts work? Or do you need
- 39:22a half cut? You know what, if you've got them, bring them.
- 39:27Okay, you know something about folks not being too choosy in this situation.
- 39:32I do know that the crew and over the calf are probably the best
- 39:37choice because that's the most coverage. But you know, if you're one of
- 39:44those folks who got like the Runners socks, somebody thought they were being clever
- 39:49and got you a twelve pack of Runners socks for Christmas and the only thing
- 39:52you run as a bar tab. So did you look at me when you
- 39:54said that? Feeling guilty? So you know you know we you're never gonna
- 40:00you have never opened this package. It's like to bring them. We'll get
- 40:02we'll get them put to good use, I promise, yeah, and we
- 40:05do ask that they're new. We we're not taking your used socks. I
- 40:07mean as much as the as the uh uh it's a great thought. We're
- 40:12not using this for you to use an opportunity to clean out your drawer.
- 40:15I mean we actually want some. We actually would like to have some,
- 40:17and they're not that expensive. You can go to any any department store and
- 40:21h and pick them up. Or like I said, like you just said,
- 40:23if you're if you've got some for Christmas that you're not going to be
- 40:25using, and bring them down to us. And we don't care what they
- 40:29look like. They can be wild multi colored socks, so they can be
- 40:31the old fashioned tube socks whatever. Yep, plain white, plain black.
- 40:36I managed to get twenty pair yesterday while I was doing some shopping for under
- 40:38ten bucks. Okay, so it can be done. Uh this this should
- 40:43not break your bank. Okay, but let me throw this out here right
- 40:46now to any of our civic organizations that may be live listing your lions,
- 40:51Elks, rotaries, Kowanas, whatever, or I'll throw this out there too.
- 40:55You know, Rob, I don't know whether you know this but it
- 40:59may be the same in Indiana where you're from, but in West Virginia,
- 41:01in order to graduate from high school, students have to have so many hours
- 41:06of community service. We'll put you to work. I mean, we could
- 41:08do that, yeah, I mean because these high school kids, unlike us,
- 41:12community service is not always court ordered, you know, so you are
- 41:15not required to wear orange. No, no, but we would like to
- 41:19have you maybe kind of help out. So if you're or maybe you're your
- 41:22church is listening right now, you know whatever, we'll take it. We'll
- 41:24take it. Well, here's what I know for sure. I have lived
- 41:28in seventeen states. I have lived in three other countries, and in every
- 41:31single place, rural, suburban, the biggest cities internationally. Homelessness is a
- 41:38problem. Displaced folks is a problem, and keeping them warm and dry in
- 41:44the winter is a problem. Lieutenant Dan said, take care of your feet.
- 41:47So that's that We're going to do it literally from the ground up.
- 41:51And I will throw this out here before we cut you loose. And that
- 41:52is we don't ever want to turn any of this into a political thing.
- 41:55However, if I can shame some politicians into getting them out to to get

- 46:24wild weather yesterday and this morning, high winds, some rain, a little
- 46:29bit of snow. Not so much snow in this area, but there was
- 46:32a little bit when I left the house. This one should the winds should
- 46:36be dying down. I do want to mention that those big old potholes that
- 46:42were a major issue on I sixty four yesterday near that entryway. If you're
- 46:49coming out of the Nitro area and you're getting on the interstate to head to
- 46:52Charleston and you're going to eastbound, there were some major major potholes. Matter
- 46:55of fact, I think I even mentioned him on the show yesterday morning.
- 47:00So what they had to do that was basically they had to shut that whole
- 47:04thing down yesterday at least knock it down to one lane, and those have
- 47:07been repaired. I understand there were several several busted up tires yesterday morning,
- 47:13so they knocked it back down to one lane yesterday so they could do the
- 47:16repair in that area. And when I drove this morning through that area,
- 47:22everything appeared to be okay. Maybe said a little bit rough, but just
- 47:27letting you know that. But man, it was backed up for miles.
- 47:29I was headed that way. I was headed westbound yesterday about one o'clock yesterday
- 47:32afternoon, man, and it was backed up for miles I mean near the
- 47:37Tayes Valley exit. But all that appears to be cleared up as of right
- 47:39now. So glad that they were able to get that fixed. So Dave

- 48:19You gotta understand the way the mind of Rob Reel works. Okay, it's
- 48:22you think my mind is warped. Get into the mind of Rob real all
- 48:28right, So Chuck Norris is an actor, martial arts guy whatever. Our
- 48:35truck that we have with our sister station is called truck Norse. So we're
- 48:37doing a live broadcast from Blanche's Diner in Clintena this Saturday afternoon. Rob will
- 48:42be there from noon to two, some good home cooking that sort of thing.
- 48:45And somehow it got going. I understand on social media that it was
- 48:47going to be Chuck Norris that was going to be making an appearance in Blanche
- 48:51is not so it is actually truck Norris, the truck, the not the
- 48:58actor. Coming up on the show tomorrow and later this week. Tomorrow,
- 49:01as I mentioned, Brad Michailhaney and Stephen Allen Adams are going to be here
- 49:05to recap the Governor's State of the State, which is tonight also tomorrow.
- 49:09Angie Collier from the United Way and Attorney Rusty Webb's going to be stopping by
- 49:13the studio tomorrow talk about the opioid settlement. Rusty's been traveling all around like
- 49:16Oprah lately. You know, you get a check and you get a check.
- 49:20Well, he's going to talk about that on the show tomorrow. On
- 49:22Friday's show, Hannah Gardner from the Kannaal Charlest New Main Association is always in

- 49:30friend state Senator and one of the guys who wants to be the next Attorney
- 49:34General of the State of West Virginia, Mike Stewart. Now, Mike's been
- 49:37in the news a lot lately for really pushing bringing the death penalty back to
- 49:44West Virginia. Send at President Craig Blair is also stated on this show in
- 49:46other places and he would like to see that happen as well. So we're
- 49:49going to get Mike's take on that coming up on Friday's show, and again
- 49:52that is on Friday. We have a new delegate here in Canawa County,
- 49:58the governor yesterday pointing Charleston attorney jb Acres to more Capitol's old seat from the
- 50:05fifty fifth delegate district Capital, of course, resigning to focus on his campaign
- 50:08for governor, and there's a story posted about that at wv metronews dot com.
- 50:14Jb Acres of course ran for mayor at one time against the current mayor,
- 50:17Amy Goodwin. He lost that race, so he was sworn in by
- 50:22his wife, Judge Mary Claire Acres, yesterday. So the new delegate is
- 50:28jb Acres. And of course, not a whole lot of time to,
- 50:30you know, learn where the restrooms are and learn where the good vending machines
- 50:34are in the Capitol because the session starts today. But we did I did
- 50:37talk to jb last night and he is going to be on the show this
- 50:42coming Monday. We'll probably have to call us up from the Capitol because the
- 50:45legislature will be in session by that point, but he is going to be
- 50:47on the show on Monday. The new delegate from the fifty fifth is Delegate
- 50:52jb Acres, appointed by the governor yesterday. He will be on the show
- 50:54coming up on Monday, A Close with Us Jared Lewis as the story posted
- 50:59about this WV metro News dot com, the vice president of local union one
- 51:04thirty three of the Postal workers has said they are going to file a national
- 51:08grievance against the Post Office because, according to Tim Holstein, to the union,
- 51:15the Postal Service did not hold a public meeting in a timely manner concerning
- 51:21the future of the Charleston distribution Center. Now, mister Hosting says that according
- 51:25to the Postal Service's own rules, that should have already happened by now.
- 51:30And again, Jared Lewis breaks it all down as part of his story WV
- 51:35Metronews dot com. And we're talking about a center that employees around eight hundred
- 51:39people, while around five hundred or so are represented by the union. Now,
- 51:45this is the only processing and distribution center that's left in the state of
- 51:50West Virginia, and there had been talking of closing it down, perhaps combining
- 51:52it or moving it to Pennsylvania. Both Senators Mansion and Capitol have UH issued
