Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Before I get into the stories for today, I wanted to give you
- 0:23guys a little update on our holiday break.
- 0:26So I did cover this in Friday's deep dive coming up, so you
- 0:30might hear this twice, but the last episode of this season will
- 0:35be December 20th. So last mini will be on the 19th
- 0:39and then December 20th will be the last deep dive, so next
- 0:43Friday. And then I'm going to be taking
- 0:45a three-week break, so I won't be back until January 13th.
- 0:51I know it's a long time, especially for a daily podcast,
- 0:54to be offline. And I'm so sorry.
- 0:57I think I'm going to miss you guys so much.
- 0:59And honestly, the girls here keep saying that like they're
- 1:02not convinced I'm going to go the full three weeks without
- 1:06coming in to record. But we will see.
- 1:09For now, that is the plan. I just like really need a
- 1:12proper, proper break. This has been my first year
- 1:15running the business by myself. It's been my first year doing a
- 1:18daily podcast. It's been my first year running
- 1:22a business that is scaled and a little bit like more
- 1:25sophisticated than we've ever been.
- 1:27And it's just a lot and I haven't had any time to really
- 1:31like properly, I think process it, decompress and rest right?
- 1:36Like, I went away in the middle of the year for my friend's
- 1:38wedding to Europe, But that was, that was not a restful trip.
- 1:41Let me tell you, you know, that was a trip for a wedding with
- 1:45all of my friends and it was so much fun.
- 1:47It was definitely what I needed to like get me through the end
- 1:50of the year. But now I just need to rest.
- 1:52So we're going to go to Sean's family's house in the country
- 1:56over Christmas time. I'm just going to like unplug
- 1:59and hopefully be as offline as possible.
- 2:01And just like in the country in Australia, resting.
- 2:04That is just what I need. I'm sorry.
- 2:07I know it is a long time, but I will miss you guys.
- 2:10And I'm so excited to be back on the mic in 2025 for you guys.
- 2:15And I've learned a lot this year.
- 2:16So I think, you know, I think it should be good.
- 2:18OK, let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:20So the first story that I have for you guys, of course is that
- 2:24Taylor Swift has performed the final show of her Eras Tour last
- 2:29night. So I know that this is December
- 2:3210th and I know her show was technically on December 8th, but
- 2:35I live in Australia for anyone that does not know.
- 2:37So for us, her final show was on December 9th because we are like
- 2:40a day ahead. So Taylor Swift said goodbye to
- 2:42the Eras Tour last night on her final show in Vancouver, BC.
- 2:46Taylor performs the Eras Tour at 149 shows.
- 2:50That would actually kind of kill me that it's not like a round
- 2:53150 across 21 countries and five continents, quote.
- 2:57We have toured the entire world with this tour.
- 3:00Taylor told the crowd on her final show.
- 3:02We have had so many adventures. It has been the most exciting,
- 3:05powerful, electrifying, intense, most challenging thing I've ever
- 3:09done in my life. We've gotten to perform for over
- 3:1110 million people on this tour. And tonight we get to play one
- 3:15last show for you here tonight in beautiful Vancouver and we're
- 3:19going to make it count. It was revealed on Monday that
- 3:22the tour raked in a record-breaking 2 billion
- 3:26dollars, which is, of course a history making mark.
- 3:31And interestingly enough, there were also thousands, hundreds of
- 3:35thousands of people watching from home via live stream on
- 3:39TikTok. And I wanted to read a Blue Sky
- 3:41thread from my friend Crystal. She's a media girly here in
- 3:45Australia. I talk about her all the time.
- 3:47But she's the founder of Z Feed and she's also the reader's
- 3:49editor at Crikey, and she was watching it and she was posting
- 3:53about this. So she said there are 240,000
- 3:56people watching an unauthorized unofficial live stream of the
- 4:00Final Eras Tour show on TikTok. And the technical capabilities
- 4:04of whoever is running this stream is something else.
- 4:06I am not a tech person, so we'll butcher the description.
- 4:10But the user running the stream from their home somewhere is
- 4:13connecting to different users at the concert who have opted into
- 4:16providing a stream from their phones.
- 4:18They're taking turns doing it in chunks, but all streamed from 1
- 4:22main account. There is a ticker running across
- 4:25the screen, updating live with the things Taylor has included
- 4:28in the piano mashup. Like this is all happening live
- 4:31in the moment. A whole broadcast produced by
- 4:33fans, free for other fans. Each new user providing vision
- 4:38for the stream gets their username put on screen, an
- 4:41incentive for participating in the hopes of getting more
- 4:43followers. Especially among Swifties who
- 4:45fiercely, cultishly support their own.
- 4:47And then someone responded to her saying nothing will beat the
- 4:50combined power of the Swifties. Now I know a lot of people are
- 4:55disappointed that she didn't do anything, you know, quote UN
- 4:58quote like special at her final show.
- 5:01She didn't announce reputation. She didn't, I don't know, bring
- 5:05anybody out as a special guest. You know, it was basically just
- 5:08a very like standard era's tour show.
- 5:11I'm not really that surprised. And I actually think that's
- 5:13completely fine. I think keeping it relatively
- 5:16the same honors the tour. And it also means that she
- 5:20doesn't have any expectations now that she has to live up to
- 5:24like, I think she really needs a break girl.
- 5:26She needs a rest and I think kind of simply ending the tour
- 5:31with like a quote, UN quote, like a regular show closes this
- 5:34chapter without opening anything new.
- 5:36So she can like genuinely take some time off.
- 5:39OK. The next story that I have for
- 5:40you guys is that sadly, someone else who is going away from the
- 5:44zeitgeist for a little bit. Drew Afuallo has announced that
- 5:48she is taking a break from TikTok following a tumultuous
- 5:50month online. So TikTok star Drew a Fallow
- 5:54announced today in a tearful video that she will be taking an
- 5:56indefinite break from TikTok and only posting sponsored content
- 6:01to oblige by, you know, contractual obligations.
- 6:04In the video, Drew said she's been considering this break for
- 6:06a long time, but the events of this past month have solidified
- 6:10her need for the break. OK, so I didn't cover this on
- 6:13mini. I felt it was a bit, I guess
- 6:17kind of inappropriate coming from me given I don't belong to
- 6:20these groups. But last month there was a group
- 6:23of white lesbian creators on TikTok who kind of started like
- 6:27going after Drew. I know that was not the
- 6:29intention, and that's probably not the right wording, but
- 6:31that's what it felt like it turned into.
- 6:34Basically, there was this one creator who said there will
- 6:37never be a lesbian version of Drew and that Drew has been able
- 6:40to amass such a huge platform because straight women look up
- 6:44to her. As someone who has been able to
- 6:46kind of fight against the patriarchy, like fight against
- 6:49the weight of men in society, while also securing a man as a
- 6:53partner herself, this take obviously lacked serious
- 6:58intersectionality. And thousands of people went to
- 7:02bat for Drew, noting that just because she's straight doesn't
- 7:05mean that she doesn't have other barriers to building her
- 7:07platform. There are just so many missing
- 7:10pieces to that argument, it's pretty wild.
- 7:13So Drew barely addressed this. There were so many really big
- 7:18creators speaking out about this, trying to, I guess,
- 7:22educate these women on why that take was so off base.
- 7:27But I'm going to assume that based on what she's saying in
- 7:29her new video about taking a break, that this discourse
- 7:32really did impact her. My build on TikTok has been very
- 7:37difficult and at times very violent for my very particular
- 7:41niche. And we all know that, right?
- 7:42And I have been weathering that storm for three plus years.
- 7:46But this break that I'm taking right now is not because of
- 7:49vitriol. And I want to make that very
- 7:51clear. This isn't because of hate I
- 7:53receive from bigots or misogynist or the many many
- 7:56people that don't like me on the app because of what it is I do,
- 8:00which is obviously trying to fight for other marginalized
- 8:02groups and all of that. I need this break because just
- 8:05for a little context and background on me, I've said this
- 8:08publicly before too, that my validation does not come from
- 8:11men. It honestly never has.
- 8:13My validation has always come from my external accomplishment.
- 8:17And in getting older and going to therapy and after getting
- 8:20fired, I realized that that is a very unhealthy and unsustainable
- 8:24place to draw validation from. Reason why I pursue validation
- 8:27through external accomplishments is my incessant need to feel
- 8:30like enough. Now I feel as if I am constantly
- 8:34trying to fit into everybody's idea of perfection.
- 8:38So the perfect content creator, the perfect influencer, the
- 8:41perfect ally, the perfect activist, the perfect feminine,
- 8:45the list goes on and on. And that feeling is suffocating.
- 8:49It was a very hard video to watch because she was so
- 8:51emotional. I just love Drew.
- 8:54OK, the last story that I have for you guys is that Patrick Taw
- 8:57has apologized to an influencer who claimed she wasn't paid for
- 9:01work on his beauty brand. Over the last three days, beauty
- 9:04creators on TikTok have been boycotting Patrick Taw's makeup
- 9:07brand and even going so far as to destroy their Patrick Taw
- 9:10makeup products on camera. This was to stand in solidarity
- 9:15with influencer Ivana Sunshine, who claimed she didn't receive
- 9:18payment when she partnered with Patrick Taw Beauty.
- 9:21I'm. Sick of seeing company's profit
- 9:25off of the black dollar and they're not paying black
- 9:30creators. I went the nice way.
- 9:34I wasn't the mad black woman when I emailed or when I DM Ed
- 9:40you. So what do you suppose I do?
- 9:42I have a question for brands. How would you feel if someone
- 9:47stole from you? If someone took your hard earned
- 9:55time and work, blood, sweat and tears and they stole.
- 10:01From you, it is unclear what particular partnership she was
- 10:04talking about, but there is a video from March where it's like
- 10:08tagged as a paid partnership and she's reviewing products.
- 10:11In a statement to People magazine, Ivana said while the
- 10:14situation with Patrick Todd Beauty has drawn an overwhelming
- 10:17amount of attention, I believe it's important that we focus on
- 10:21the larger issue, the systemic undervaluing of creators,
- 10:24especially Black creators. My hope is that this situation
- 10:28highlights how creators of color are often overlooked, underpaid
- 10:32and dismissed despite the value and impact we bring to the
- 10:35table. This isn't just about one brand,
- 10:37it's about the need for fairness, accountability and
- 10:40equity across the industry. I hope this conversation
- 10:42encourages more brands to reflect on their practices and
- 10:45commit to valuing all creators equally.
- 10:48So Patrick Todd by himself has now responded in a TikTok video.
- 10:52I immediately reached out to Ivana after seeing that video
- 10:57and I don't expect a response from Ivana.
- 11:01She doesn't owe me a conversation.
- 11:04She is probably mad at this whole entire situation and that
- 11:09is completely understandable. Ivana, I am truly so sorry that
- 11:15this has even escalated to this point and I am so sorry that I
- 11:19didn't see your message a month ago and I want to get you
- 11:25compensated as soon as possible today if you are willing to
- 11:30answer me. If I had known this, I would
- 11:33have never let this happen. This was my finance team that
- 11:39made this mistake. My face is the one that you guys
- 11:43see and I need to take accountability for this.
- 11:46This will never happen again. OK.
- 11:49So as someone who runs a business that is very adjacent
- 11:55to influencers and how we make money like advertising and
- 11:58promotions and sponsorships, I'm going to give Patrick Taw
- 12:01himself the benefit of the doubt here.
- 12:04I'm going to assume that the influencer relations, the
- 12:07partnerships and the logistics that go with that for his brand
- 12:12are probably handled by an agency.
- 12:15And this is a consistent problem with agencies.
- 12:20And I am sure that Ivana being a black woman, being a black
- 12:23creator, she is treated much worse in this situation.
- 12:28This is a consistent problem with agencies getting paid on
- 12:32time, even for us, as you know, a company is so difficult when
- 12:39you're working with agencies. I can only imagine that as like
- 12:42a single creator, I'm not sure if she has a manager, but as
- 12:44like a single creator, a single black creator trying to get your
- 12:48payment. If that is the video that she's
- 12:52referring to, the one that I found, it was posted in March.
- 12:56We are now in December. She probably felt like at her
- 12:59wit's end, like she had no other options but to bring this to
- 13:03TikTok. I'm glad she did because it's
- 13:05going to get her paid. And I actually do hope that this
- 13:08will be a bit of a wake up call for the industry, working with
- 13:11all creators, all independent, you know, media companies,
- 13:16whatever it is. The way that payment works in
- 13:21this industry, at least here in Australia, and it sounds like
- 13:23could be similar in the US, is so incredibly frustrating.
- 13:27And I can't even imagine how much more frustrating it would
- 13:30be to be like a solo creator, a creator of color, just like
- 13:35trying to breakthrough and to get someone to listen to you and
- 13:39take you seriously and pay your fucking invoice.
- 13:42I literally can't even imagine. 1 little tip that we have
- 13:46implemented. Not that I think Ivana is
- 13:48listening to this podcast, but one thing that we have done to
- 13:52ensure payment, it's still a struggle.
- 13:54Like we are still chasing invoices that were due months
- 13:57and months and months ago. It is just kind of the nature of
- 13:59the business unfortunately. But I 1 little thing that we've
- 14:02done is we ask for a deposit upfront.
- 14:05If a brand won't do that, then we will implement something in
- 14:08our contracts that put in like charging interest if they don't
- 14:13pay on time. But yes, so that is me giving
- 14:16Patrick Todd himself the benefit of the doubt.
- 14:19I do think this it was all handled separately to like him
- 14:23as the figurehead of the brand, but at the end of the day, his
- 14:26name and his face are on the brand and you know, I think it
- 14:30was important that he personally address this.
- 14:33All right, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 14:35Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 14:38and subscribe. Please star rate US on Spotify.
- 14:40We're trying to get to 500 by the end of the year.
- 14:43I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 14:45Bye.
