- 2:52beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Dragnet is the story of your
- 2:57police force in action. It was Sunday, December twenty fifth. It was
- 3:05raining in the Los Angeles. We're working a day watch out of Homicide Detail.
- 3:08My partner's Ben Romero. The boss is blame Steed captain a homicide.
- 3:13My name is Friday. Was thirty nine minutes past five am when I got
- 3:15to San Andreas Cathedral on First Street, Churchyard. Oh that's not pot the
- 3:25way there, Hi, Dave, Hi, Joe, body's over here,
- 3:31alright, Merry Christmas. Huh yeah, section from the church founded by an
- 3:40arago remember, look pretty brutal. Yes, okay, who wish you?
- 3:53No identification? The corner checked the body in. Yeah, how long you've
- 3:55been dead? We're gonna start rating about midnight, didn't Yeah, the grounds
- 4:00dry under the body opened dead five or six hours? I'd say, Ben
- 4:04get here yet. Yeah, he's helping Claudia check the area. And this
- 4:10park here just all a part of the church grounds. And I think so
- 4:14I was stuck out of this rain for a minute. There's an alcove over
- 4:15there by the church. Yeah, what not? How much we got to
- 4:21go one day? Not much motive looks like robbery, you know. Find
- 4:27a woman's person in the body pretty well picked over Chris's wet the Jones Destiny
- 4:31contents for Prince Corner's checking and the idea of what the killer used in the
- 4:39woman's face and coroner figures a sharp instrument or sometime nasty one. Yeah fight
- 4:45here, well, Hi Lee, you and everything happens on the Christmas Chris
- 4:49was soaking wet an ordinary black handbag and raised any prints on the stuff inside,
- 4:55No, no one, Yeah you can check the content. Thanks you
- 5:00let's see small comb boasted the teeth out of it. Three pinners, hairpins,
- 5:10mirror, lipstick. That's certainly a couple more things. This fountain panel,
- 5:15this door key, and i'm swing found them in the grass a few
- 5:18feet from the body. Now have a look at us. Yeah, it's
- 5:20an ordinary ballpoint fountain pin buy him in any drug stoff of sixty nine per
- 5:25cents. No center rushed on. The key must have been dropped recently.
- 5:29Maybe this will explain what happened to her face? Broken beer bottle? Why'd
- 5:32you find that last one? Found it back in the bushes over there?
- 5:35These jagged edges here smeared with blood too much rain can't do anything about princes
- 5:41till a drive and get enough from these smears to run a precipitate. Think
- 5:46so they kind of man? Yeah, man, what is it? Oh?
- 5:48Hi Joe, Hi Cardio found stead of footprints over with that trumpets shrobbery.
- 5:53Rain hadn't spoiled me. Did you cover them? Yeah? I think
- 5:56you can get a pretty good cash pro but get a picture of them right
- 5:58away. Hey, Charlie, why will your lady? I'll get the stuff
- 6:00from the car. Mind giving me a hand? Day most off. Well,
- 6:05this takes care of Christmas. Yoh yeah, you get a chance to
- 6:10check the body in what do you think? Well, there's no sign of
- 6:14struggle. Could have happened after a Christmas Eve brawl? Maybe, Yeah,
- 6:17whoever the victim is, she was probably acquainted with the killer. The two
- 6:20of'em came in the park and the victim got it before she knew what
- 6:24was happening. Might work easy if we find out who the victim is and
- 6:27we can check our prince to R and I when we get back to the
- 6:29office. What do those footprints look like? Seem like a heavy brand,
- 6:31maybe work shoes or some kind I wanna see how he's making a Yeah,
- 6:35let's go and miss Christmas dinner again this year. M what trains farm and
- 6:46family? Key? What do it was doing? There's a cheap pin you
- 6:50sell thousands and smoke. I think those things who helped him victor killer.
- 6:58I gotta find him very thank you. I don't know. Maybe we can
- 7:04work a switch signed the lock that fits the key. Nine am Christmas Day,
- 7:14Sergeant's Dave Royo, Robert Claudio Ben and I went back to the office
- 7:17and took stock of what we had to work with wasn't much. The woman
- 7:21had been murdered. Who was she? Why was she killed? Who was
- 7:26the killer? Dave and Claudio had the dead woman's fingerprints taken and they were
- 7:30run through the record bureau. Ben and I checked with Lee Jones at the
- 7:32crime lamb. The results of the precipitate test showed that the type of blood
- 7:36found on the broken beer bottle Matt's that of the victim. From the cast
- 7:41of the foot impressions found at the scene of the killing, Lee estimated that
- 7:45they were made by a person approximately five feet nine inches tall, weighing about
- 7:48one hundred and sixty pounds. He figured the foot gear must have been of
- 7:53a heavy type, either a boot or address shoe with thick double soles size
- 7:56eleven nine AM. We checked in a basement of the Hall of Justice the
- 8:01Colli Morgue. Doc, how's it going? Oh there at Joe. It's
- 8:09caused by movable fracture. The skulls flashing the face was a contributing spar as.
- 8:13I sent her close to Lee Jones. Yeah we know, no lung
- 8:16remarks. Ah, I got two things here. They will help me,
- 8:18they won't. Yeah, and the chemist report here in the blood analysis shows
- 8:26the victim of drinking. She was definitely under the influence at the time she
- 8:28was murdered, twelve hundred percent of alcohol in the blood. How about the
- 8:33murder weapon, Doc, We're gonna rule out that beer bottle and just coming
- 8:35to that step over here, Yeah, it's mark here in the front of
- 8:43her face, brown smudge. Well, Jones says that that shoe polish.
- 8:46He analyzed a few of the particles times in the cause of death was brought
- 8:50about by severe blows in my head and face. Heavy shoe, huh,
- 8:52that's my guess. Probably a boot or a workshoe that doesn't Nand you what
- 8:56do you mean they were heavy work shoes was wearing why would they probably how
- 9:01many people probably say work for you could be waterproof, you know. Jones
- 9:05says it was a brown paste polish unless the killer was wearing some kind of
- 9:09dress, boots, cycle boots. Maybe hundreds of kids on motorcycles were Yeah,
- 9:13that's going to be about as helpful as a key or a cheap fountain
- 9:16pen. Excuse me, Connie Moore and speaking, Yeah, all right,
- 9:22fine, I'll tell them cunning amatar, and I want to see you right
- 9:26away. What's up. They made the victims prince. During the war years,
- 9:33a complete file of pictures and fingerprints had been kept on all persons employed
- 9:37at local defense plans. Out of this file came our first major lead.
- 9:41The victim's fingerprints matched those of one Maria Camacho, thirty eight years old,
- 9:46formerly employed at Universal Aircraft. Her address in nineteen forty five was listed as
- 9:52ninety two thirty Sheridan Avenue. Ben and I went over to the crime lab,
- 9:56picked up the key and the fountain pen found near the body, and
- 9:58drove to the Sheridan Avenue address. The house was three blocks from the churchyard
- 10:03where the body was found. A young woman with a baby in her arms
- 10:07answered the door. She identified herself as Elena Gomez. She told us Maria
- 10:11Camacho was her aunt. They were expecting her for Christmas dinner late that afternoon.
- 10:16We told her what happened. When she recovered from the shock, we
- 10:18questioned her and her husband, the furniture worker. So high for me,
- 10:24Why anyone do this? Tori? When's the last time you saw her?
- 10:28Mister Kilmy, She was around last night, sargat. She brought the presents
- 10:33for the kids, always bought them preasents on Christmas? Did she live here?
- 10:37Was this her permanent address? She stayed with us during the war when
- 10:41Grady was overseat. When he came back, she took a room down the
- 10:43street. I didn't you give you address? What time did Maria leave the
- 10:48house last night? Oh, let's see, m's been around ten o'clock,
- 10:52not much later, don't you think, Lenna? About ten o'clock? Yeah,
- 10:56go see what those kids are doing? A ready? Did Maria have
- 11:01anything to drink here last night? Minute man? Yes, we're glad to
- 11:05share it together that call. Could you tell if she's been drinking before she
- 11:07came here? It was Christmas eve. I guess she's had a fear.
- 11:11Why was she a pretty heavy drinker? Not usually? No, maybe on
- 11:15holidays? So I really like to get up and have fun living alone all
- 11:20that? Really? Did she drink it home? Or was there some particular
- 11:26place she liked to go? I can't he down on Souda Street she used
- 11:31to go there. Any others? Just a couple of bars on Brooklyn Avenue.
- 11:35I know the names. What Maria do for a living in this domas?
- 11:39She took int some dressmaking with herself. She wasn't poor and rich.
- 11:46Her landlady could tell you about her friend. Kids are hungry one you're gonna
- 11:50call. Sorry that we had to break in on you like it? What's
- 11:52all right? Sorry, that's just the kids. Ask the officers if they
- 11:56want some mets pie rake, No, no, no, that's all right.
- 11:58May may thank you? Just one more thing? Would you look at
- 12:03please? Please pen? Sure that's Maria. Look great, Maria's pen?
- 12:09Now how about this key? Well, thanks very much, both of you.
- 12:16Sorry to hold up your dinner. That's all right. Hey maybe I
- 12:20could picture a turkey sandwich. Oh, thank you same. We have to
- 12:22be going. We'll contact you later on. Here's our card, all right.
- 12:28I can't think of a reason, sarge Hi, someone would kill us.
- 12:35I would kill Maria. Come on, nice kid, it's going to
- 12:46be having a good Christmas. Too bad we had to spoil it. We
- 12:52go down the street to the rooming house where Maria Camacho's stave. We talked
- 12:56to the land lady and the rest of the tenants and failed to come up
- 12:58with a lead. They told us Maria Camacho drank a little, but she
- 13:01was always pleasant, easy to get along with. We checked her room,
- 13:05we went through stacks of Spanish language newspapers and magazines. We went through her
- 13:09bills, photographs or letters. We found nothing. There wasn't an item in
- 13:13the small apartment that could help us. We went through the entire rooming house,
- 13:16trying each door with a key that we'd found for the body. Didn't
- 13:20fit any of them out, even the door to the victim's room. Five
- 13:24p m. There was a lull in the ring. We picked up Dave
- 13:26and Claudio and started to explore the only lead we had. The victim had
- 13:31been drinking a few hours before she'd been murdered, probably in the neighborhood tavern.
- 13:35For the next six hours, we canvassed every bar in the vicinity.
- 13:37Eleven fifteen p m. Christmas night, the four of us met in a
- 13:41combination bar a restaurant at Brooklyn and Soto for a byee. You had as
- 13:46much luck as we did. Nothing, Dave. Everybody we talked to knew
- 13:50the woman. Nobody saw at Christmas Eve, and we picked up the names
- 13:52of a dozen friends of hers from the bar down and checked them out.
- 13:54They couldn't tell us any well. We still got another dozen bars to cover.
- 13:58At least she must have been in one of them last night, I
- 14:01wish we'd find if my wife's sure, man, you've got company? Those
- 14:05mine? All right? Gentlemen, we had the girl hand sandwich I did
- 14:09all right, and three hamburgers. Yeah, there we go. I played.
- 14:16We got some ketchup. Please sure say you wouldn't like a little leg
- 14:20night to go with that? It's good. I make the battle man.
- 14:26Here's something you can do for her, Yes, sir? Would you look
- 14:28at this? Bet you all right? See if you've identify this woman?
- 14:33Sure looks like Maria? Yeah, that's her. You know it was you
- 14:35in here last night? You know? Yeah? She was. What time
- 14:39was she all about? Eleven eleven thirty? Y? Was she with somebody
- 14:43or half a dozen then at least Maria another woman and four or five men.
- 14:46Were they drinking? Well they were well behaved, just had a little
- 14:50Christmas chair that so they like my ignites? Or what time did Maria leave?
- 14:52You remember? Well? No, not exactly, but she left before
- 14:56the others they closed the place before it cuts she leave alone, Tony father
- 15:00at I think it must have been sometime around midnight. I'm not sure who's
- 15:03coney Tony Perez's he knows marine where's he now? Christmas is off lives in
- 15:09a hotel down the street someplace. I don't know. I'm fit. Maybe
- 15:11the key does. David Claudio started to check the neighborhood to locate the hotel
- 15:20where Tony Perez stayed. Ben and I continued our canvas of bars and restaurants
- 15:24in the area. One am, the rain started in again. We checked
- 15:28into the bar on Brooklyn Avenue near Cornwall. The cantenas and a loa,
- 15:33yes, sir, gentlemen, please helpers. Did you look at this picture?
- 15:37Please? If you can identify till I dry my hands. Let's just
- 15:39getting some of these glasses out of the way. Let's see. Did you
- 15:46never see her before? Oh? Yeah, that's my yea, too bad.
- 15:52I reading the papers about it. Can you tell us if she was
- 15:54in here last night? No, I didn't see how I've reading the papers
- 15:58about it, though terrible put him? Are you its possible she might have
- 16:02been in you didn't hear? No? I always know when Marie is here.
- 16:06She was always full of fun. She liked to sing. I better
- 16:10get these glasses then you won't call the office. You know? How about
- 16:15a drink? Sir? You you don't look so good. You got any
- 16:18coffee? It's not very fresh. She's been standing there a couple of hours.
- 16:23I'm sorry. Okay, here, here's the sugar, any thank you?
- 16:41Yeah, that's not very warm. Huh, that's okay. What do
- 16:45you think of it? Sir? The guy was crazy? I don't know.
- 16:51Ah, he must have been crazy. That's a nice rain. That's
- 16:56good for the farmers. Yeah. Shoot, did you ever see this key
- 17:00before? Let's see. I don't know. I go. Yeah, Davin
- 17:07Toodie who found a hotel to pick up ton Pere took him in. What
- 17:11do you tell him? He says, they're talking to him. No,
- 17:12he won't. Same way to find anything on him. He's wearing a pair
- 17:15of dark brown boots. Yeah, well, punished. You are listening to
- 17:29Dragnet. Is the case history of a police investigation. Monday, December twenty
- 17:41sixth nine am. We checked Tony Perez through R and I. He had
- 17:45a record of seven arrests but no convictions. During the past year, he'd
- 17:49been booked on suspicion of two to eleven PC assault with intent to do great
- 17:53bodily harm, second degree burgery. In each instance, he'd been released for
- 17:57a lack of evidence. All of his shoes and clothing were brought to the
- 18:00crime lab for examination. Nine five am, we brought Perez back to the
- 18:06interrogation room. He admitted that he had been with Maria Camacho Christmas Eve,
- 18:10but he denied having anything to do with her killing. He told us that
- 18:12after he had left Maria, he'd gone too a party at some friend's house.
- 18:17Dave and Claudio went out to check his story. I gave him the
- 18:19key found near the body and asked him to try it on the door to
- 18:22Perez's hotel room. Ben and I continued to question the suspect. How well
- 18:26did you know Maria montre TONI I told you already. She was just some
- 18:30old crow. We used to hang around the bar, that's all. I
- 18:33used to talk to her once in a while. Do you ever have any
- 18:37arguments with him? No, how many times you're gonna ask me that,
- 18:40it would help a lot if you could tell us exactly where you left Maria
- 18:42Christmas, even when you left it. I told you already. I don't
- 18:45remember exactly. We're drinking, We were all drinking. I don't remember.
- 18:51How'd you get to that boy? Oh? Walk place? John Malabar Street.
- 18:55Maria atopped at a bar someplace along the way, and that's the last
- 18:59time I saw. Did you go in with her? No? She went
- 19:02in alone and I went to the party. That's all I deterrogation room fright.
- 19:10Yeah. Check the polish and the spirit of polish and the victim's face
- 19:15wax components exactly the same. Good. How about the cast Nope, they
- 19:18didn't matter. The prince we cast out there besides eleven big heel press nine
- 19:22pretty small hill. What about the other stuff went over? The rest of
- 19:26the shoes was closed. Nutting the kaya Oh jaylie, thank you? You
- 19:33shine your own boots, Tony, No, why where do you get them?
- 19:38Shamed? I go to Angelo's Chicago Street right now. First, when's
- 19:42the last time you got a shame? Oh? Christmas Eve? What time
- 19:47Christmas? He's gone when I got off work? Two naf all right,
- 19:52Hi dad, she went outside of men Yeah, prays telling the truth about
- 20:03the party. He was there. We timed out. How long did it
- 20:06take him to walk from the restaurant for the party? Yeah, pretty close.
- 20:10His friends say, you got to the party about twelve thirty. Doesn't
- 20:12look like you had time to kill that woman. Where does that leave us?
- 20:15You still got those boots? No, no more, they don't.
- 20:18Ma's the impressions at the murder scene. It makes us even here's your keyback
- 20:22didn't fit. Tony Perez was held for further investigation. Dave and Claudio took
- 20:32up the canvassing of bars in the same area where we had left off the
- 20:34night before. Ben and I drove down to Angelo's shine stands. It stood
- 20:38just outside a barber shop, four chairs with an awning full of cigarette holes
- 20:42over him. He identified Maria Camacho's picture immediately. We questioned him while they
- 20:48polished their shoes. Marie I used to tell a sergeant running around like that,
- 20:55she had so many friends. Did you see Maria on Christmas Eve?
- 21:00Christmas Eve? Let me see no? No, last time was two days
- 21:06before Christmas? Angelo and you know a man with the name of Tony Perez,
- 21:10Sony Shure, Tony Perez talk fella big shows. Is you want to
- 21:17hear customers? Longest time he comes to see me? Was he here on
- 21:19Christmas? Even? So? Yeah, yeah, he was here. I
- 21:22gave him a shine Remember what kind of shoes he had on shore? Boots
- 21:27he always wears boots. What color were they? You know? Brown?

- 21:37of police do you use in his boots? As long? Well, I
- 21:41got the cam down here, Yeah, here, I great polish. You
- 21:45got boats, I can fix them up. He use the same polish on
- 21:48all the boots you shine, Angel, only the brown boats. That's brown
- 21:53polish, you fella. There's too many questions, make me go through slow.
- 21:57There's no rush, Angelo, can you tell me this? Yeah?
- 22:02Besides Tony Perez, is there anybody else with brown boots who gotta shine from
- 22:06you? Christmas Eve? I don't know. Lots of people get shined and
- 22:10see it's pretty busy, and just the people with brown boot TAngelo? Can
- 22:14you remember? No, no, no, I don't think so. Tony
- 22:17was the only one with the brown boots. There's no artist. How about
- 22:21heavy brown shoes? Huh? Can you remember the people with heavy brown shoes
- 22:25that came in for shine? No, no, I don't know. I
- 22:27don't know. Look, please just letting me shine your shoes? Huh?
- 22:30That canon brown polychangalo you say, that's the kinds you use on Tony Perez's
- 22:34booth. Yeah, this kind of right here, Well, can you remember
- 22:38how many times you used that polish on Christmas Eve? Hell, I open
- 22:42this can that morning and see how much is gone? Maybe I use it
- 22:47all or maybe half a dozen times. Can you remember the people whose shoes
- 22:52called for this kind of polysh Lots of them brown shoes. I know the
- 22:56feet when I see him, I don't know the face. Don't you remember
- 22:59any of them? They like the Shine might be buying a buy they come
- 23:03back three polls. Maybe I see him before. I don't know the names.
- 23:10Okay, finished, You're I gonna shine? Oh yeah, fine,
- 23:17say I'm gonna buy that can of polish from the Angelo and we're gonna check
- 23:21back with you later. Okay, here, fine polish dogs best you can
- 23:26get. Yeah, but it rubs off. December twenty sixth five pm,
- 23:36we drove back to the crime lab and had Lee Jones analyze the can of
- 23:38shoe polish get masked exactly what the particles of shoe polish taken from the victim's
- 23:42body and from the boots of Tony Perez. We arranged for a stakeout of
- 23:47Angelo's Shine stands who takes the people with heavy brown shoes returned Angelo could point
- 23:51them out immediately to the men on duty. Five point thirty pm, Dave
- 23:55and Claudio called him. I thought they had another nibble, this time from
- 23:59the bartender els Adela tavern bar on Soto Street. We drove down to South
- 24:03Main and Harlem Place for a meet. Hi, Dan, Hi. Figured
- 24:14we'd better move on this tonight. What's the pitch. Bartender on Soto tip
- 24:17me that Maria Camacho was in his place. Christmas Eve said it was a
- 24:21little after midnight. H said she had a drink. Left the place about
- 24:23ten minutes past twelve with a guy called Frank Tallano nosed around from his Toronto

- 25:45there? Well? He has? He's a very good man, Frank.
- 25:48Anything wrong is he getting? No? He has? Where will we find
- 25:51him? While I like to know what the trouble is? We'd like to
- 25:53talk to him this year? So well, he has a rum a good
- 25:56friends Mission annex. That's so wuns on Peter Street. Is that his permanent
- 26:00residence, the mission annex? Yeah, Frank, very helpful. He worked
- 26:03for a small tower and we give him Roman board. Is he over at
- 26:04the Annix? Now? Yeah, maybe you'd better not see him now,
- 26:08officer. Well, well, Frank's nod at you've been drinking again? That's
- 26:15for sure signs. What do you mean. Well, whenever Frank starts drinking,
- 26:18that means that he's worrying. He's one of those thanks to forget him.
- 26:22He's been drinking for three days. He wants to have a lot to
- 26:26forget. Come on six thirty pm, we drove over to the Good Friend's
- 26:33Mission annex on San Pedro Street. The man in charge told us that Toronto
- 26:37had a small room to himself at the rear of the second floor. Dave
- 26:40and Claudio went around to cover the mission annex from the back. Ben and
- 26:42I went up a narrow flight of wooden stairs. Plain white plaster walls were
- 26:47chipped and cracked and scrawled with pencil markings. We walked down to the end
- 26:51of a wide hallway to a brown panel door with a transom above it.
- 26:56There was a man in soiled work clothes sitting on the bed. On the
- 26:59table next to them, there were three quart wine bottles, two of them
- 27:02were empty. Get out of here, you, Frank to Leno, what
- 27:07about it? Police officers like to talk to you. Get out of here
- 27:14and not taking me. I'll cut you to pieces. Drop the bottle to
- 27:18Leno, get out of here, Drop the bottle. I'll cut you to
- 27:22pieces like you cut Maria. I'll kill you. Put it down to Leno,
- 27:29drop it, get the cups on them. Yeah, let's go just
- 27:40a minute. Yeah, yeah, it fits. The story you I've just
- 27:59heard was true, only the names were changed to protect the innocent. On
- 28:03March seventh, trial was held in Superior Court Departments ninety four City and County
- 28:07of Los Angeles, State of California. In a moment the results of that
- 28:11trial, Frank Dominic Tolano was tried and convicted of first degree murder and sentenced
- 28:25to life imprisonment. He is now serving his term in the state penitentiary.
- 28:33You have just heard Dragnet a series of authentic cases from official files. Technical
- 28:37advice for Dragnet comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. A.
- 28:41Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department. Patty Page visits Jack Birch tomorrow morning on
- 28:47NBC Welcome back. Well, this would seem, having aired on May twenty
- 29:00fifth, to be about seven months early for Christmas episode. But this is
- 29:06something I talked about when we brought you the twenty two rifle for Christmas.
- 29:11Dragging It often did episodes that were set around Christmas. Even though they were
- 29:17aired nowhere around there, just to use to set a mode of the officer
- 29:23having to deal with all of this stuff in a time that's supposed to be
- 29:30about peace on earth, goodwill toward men, and kind of the effect it
- 29:33has on their family, their home life. Kind of touched on here very
- 29:37well also second straight week. In both this episode and The Big Pug,
- 29:45the real big focus of the episode is on the police taking next to nothing
- 29:52and assembling it into a case following the clues. It's not the big,
- 29:57brilliant deduction of the classic detectives or the tough guy stuff of the hard Boiled
- 30:06Bunch. Rather, it's men who are intelligent following the clues one by one
- 30:11with reasonable reasoning skills. You saw an example of that with Romero's observation about
- 30:18the boots and his rejection of the idea that these would be work boots.
- 30:22I think that is a very compelling sort of dragnet case. All right,
- 30:27Well, our final note on Patreon. The final reward we have and we're
- 30:32only there's only one of these available, and that level is the commissioner.
