Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / PGA Championship preview with Matt Rudy, Matt Snyder on Pete Rose's HOF ban being lifted
Transcript
- 0:06All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:09a Wednesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:12Network. Trent Condon, Ken Miller for the
- 0:15next couple of hours talking sports with you.
- 0:18Trent will join the program a little later.
- 0:20He's got a a family commitment that's keeping him away for the
- 0:23first O 30 minutes or so of the program.
- 0:26But in that time, in fact, in about 5 minutes, Matt Rudy from
- 0:28Golf Digest, formerly of Golf Digest, where he covered golf
- 0:31for decades, better part of four decades, will join me.
- 0:34We'll discuss the second major PGA Quail Hollow gets underway
- 0:39this week. So a little golf conversation
- 0:40coming up here, excuse me, in about 5 minutes with Matt Rudy,
- 0:47Matt Snyder will join me. Now, the reason Matt Snyder
- 0:52talks baseball with Trent and I every Monday and the second hour
- 0:56of the program, but he's a Hall of Fame voter.
- 0:58With the news that came down yesterday with the the list of
- 1:02players that were permanently ineligible from baseball, making
- 1:07them exempt from any opportunity to qualify for the Hall of Fame.
- 1:12With that now going by the wayside, what does this mean?
- 1:15We'll pick Matt's brain about, you know, potentially a door
- 1:18opening for a guy like Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson,
- 1:21maybe the other names on the list.
- 1:24I, I mean, I, I don't know anything about them.
- 1:27Obviously the 1919 of a Black Sox scandal.
- 1:32Sure, shirtless Joe Jackson, for whatever reason is the face of
- 1:34that. But boy, by all accounts and
- 1:36anything you read, he was maybe the one guy that was on the up
- 1:40and up. So we'll see.
- 1:41But it's certainly what's more about Pete Rose.
- 1:43And ironically, the day before Pete Rose night it at the Bank
- 1:48of America field in Cincinnati, which is tonight.
- 1:51Yesterday we found out that the eligibility, the permanent
- 1:54eligibility ineligibility is now no more and we'll see where it
- 2:00goes. So Matt Snyder's going to join
- 2:01me to talk that. What about his fellow Hall of
- 2:04Fame voters? How do you think they will
- 2:06react? They've got some time.
- 2:07This will not be for the 26th class.
- 2:10The earliest he could see induction into the Hall of Fame
- 2:13would be 2027 Matt Snyder at 12:45, David Kaplan, Centurion
- 2:19Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy. He will join me here coming up
- 2:23at Trent as well at one O clock, kicking off the second hour of
- 2:26the program. Cubs at a big win last night
- 2:29come from behind. Fashion moisis by Esteros got a
- 2:32nice round of applause. He stepped into the batter's box
- 2:35for the first time in the show. He was over last night, but
- 2:38they'll be better. Days ahead for him.
- 2:40But big night for Justin Turner, who really needed that last
- 2:43night because I thought the sand in his career hourglass was
- 2:47quickly running out. And it seemed like if the Cubs
- 2:50were, you know, going to make another move that Justin Turner
- 2:53would be on that very short list of guys who may be designated
- 2:57for assignment. But last night was his night as
- 3:00he drives in the winning runs in the ninth inning.
- 3:03So we'll talk to Kathy about Chicago sports stuff when we
- 3:07talk to him at one O clock. And then Sloane Paiva recovers
- 3:10sports wagering and the NBA for the Sporting News.
- 3:14He'll stop by at about 1:30 try. We'll make some picks before we
- 3:16get out of here. Circa sports sponsor those those
- 3:19coming up at about 10 minutes before too.
- 3:22Speaking of Circa sports, real quick before we ring Matt Rudy
- 3:25here, the circus put out their conference win totals when it
- 3:31comes to college football. This year may interest some of
- 3:34you as it as it certainly did me and my partner as well, But
- 3:38these have been out there for a while at other places and Circa
- 3:43has essentially mirrored what they're seeing at other spots,
- 3:46at least in that when it comes to the 2 locals.
- 3:49Iowa State, their win total is 7 1/2.
- 3:52At the top of the Big 12. There are three teams at 8 1/2 K
- 3:56State, Arizona State and Texas Tech and then Baylor, BYU, Iowa
- 3:59State, Kansas and Utah all at 7 1/2.
- 4:02So parody looks as though it's going to rain again in the Big
- 4:0612. Meanwhile in the Big 10, Ohio
- 4:08State and Oregon at the top, Penn State right behind at 10
- 4:11and then Iowa 7 1/2. Matt Rudy, long time golf writer
- 4:15at golf die just now a ghost writer where he writes books and
- 4:21is busy doing that but takes time out every all of the majors
- 4:24to preview and to recap with Trent and I.
- 4:27And he does here this morning. Matt Trent's gone for a family
- 4:30commitment for the first oh, half hour.
- 4:32So just me. Good to speak with you as
- 4:34always. How are you, Matt Rudy?
- 4:36You know, I'm putting the finishing touches on a book with
- 4:39Mark Blackburn, who is combinant tour coach and I'm having a
- 4:44great time talk talking to you looking.
- 4:46Forward to it absolutely and appreciate what we've done over
- 4:49the decades, quite frankly, doing just that well when it
- 4:52comes to this tournament, the PGA quail hollow and I'm sure
- 4:56you've been there. So I'm anxious to pick your
- 4:59brain on on the course itself, but what I've read, because if
- 5:02you can hit it and you can hit it straight and you can putt,
- 5:05you've got a chance. Is this, is this a golf course
- 5:08that's more committed to the to the long hitter?
- 5:13Well, I think I think it's fair to say that if you can drive the
- 5:16ball like Rory, I mean, that plays anywhere.
- 5:19That kind of makes me, it makes me chuckle when I hear, you
- 5:22know, some of the sort of mid level analysis of golf courses
- 5:25where, you know, if you can drive it and you can, you know,
- 5:27you can hit good iron shots. Well, yeah, I mean, yeah, I
- 5:29mean, that's, that's golf, right?
- 5:31I think, I think, you know, being a being a, an elite driver
- 5:35of the ball is obviously a good thing.
- 5:38But I think more, I mean, the, the the discussion that I've
- 5:41heard about Clay hollow is from the players is pretty accurate,
- 5:46which is this is a extremely well conditioned place that is a
- 5:52is a test for a particular that rewards a particular kind of
- 5:56golfer. And that's a golfer who likes to
- 5:58hit high and far off the teeth and hit it from right to left.
- 6:01You know, a lot of the holes favor a high right to left shot,
- 6:05which happens to be the kind of shot that Rory likes to hit and
- 6:08happens to be a shot that Dustin Thomas likes that.
- 6:11And those are two players that have had really good records at
- 6:13this place in the in the PGA Tour events, in the major
- 6:16championships that they've had here over the last 15 years.
- 6:20You know, there's been some kind of grumbling that it doesn't
- 6:22have a lot of soul for a major championship venue.
- 6:25But I mean, to be fair, the PGA is the, is the organization
- 6:29that's had major championships that places like Valhalla and
- 6:32courses they own where, you know, it's more about, I think
- 6:36you're presenting a fair test to players that that is
- 6:39entertaining to watch more than kind of the legacy of the golf
- 6:43course itself. And I think if you look at the
- 6:46winners list of the PCA championship recently, there's
- 6:49there's been some really exciting golf with some
- 6:52fantastic winners. So I think they're they're,
- 6:55they're engineering it in a way that's providing us something
- 6:59exciting to see. You know, and if we go back a
- 7:01year in this, of course, this was the Scotty Scheffler
- 7:05arrested in Louisville at Valhalla, as you mentioned.
- 7:09Truly one of the more bizarre stories in all of sports in
- 7:122024, wasn't it? I have to say it's the most
- 7:16bizarre thing I've encountered in the 25 years I did that at
- 7:21Golf Digest. I was working on the last big
- 7:24piece that I did for Golf Digest, which was Randy Smith.
- 7:27Scott Scotty's coat, you know, from the time he was a kid, it
- 7:30was a, it was a oral history about building Scotty
- 7:33Scheffler's game completely with all these pictures from his
- 7:36childhood and swing analysis from all these different times
- 7:39throughout his life. And I've worked with Randy since
- 7:422000 and I've known Scotty since he was 5.
- 7:46So when I woke up that morning, and if you had said to me
- 7:48there's 1000 people in a line and which one is the least
- 7:52likely to get arrested on the first day of a major
- 7:55championship, Scotty Scheffler would have been a thousandth in
- 7:57line. So the fact that that unfolded
- 8:00the way it did was just incredibly bizarre because he, I
- 8:04mean, he says mild mannered, polite, nice, regular as you'll
- 8:10run across. And I don't understand that
- 8:11because I've known him a long time.
- 8:13That's just, I mean, he actually comes across it's kind of
- 8:15boring. He just doesn't have a lot to
- 8:17say. He's not a he's not a
- 8:19confrontational guy. And I think to be able to do
- 8:23that, you know, get get arrested and then get out of jail and
- 8:27come to the golf course and try to reset.
- 8:29I mean, when you're when you're saying something like, well, I
- 8:32had to do my pre round stretches in a jail cell.
- 8:34That's not something golf very often.
- 8:36No, that's that's very true. Well, what do we think of his
- 8:39chances this week? Obviously we saw him win
- 8:41recently. So he's in good form.
- 8:44He's the betting favorite is he's going to be most every
- 8:48every week he puts AT in the ground to start a golf
- 8:50tournament. He's going to be up there on the
- 8:52on the odds board. Your thoughts on his week?
- 8:56Now, is he going to take an Uber to the court?
- 8:58Is he going to drive himself? I guess that's the, to me,
- 9:01that's the big question. I mean, obviously what he did at
- 9:04the Byron Nelson a couple weeks ago, I mean, he just tore the
- 9:06place apart and it was a, it was exactly the way he plays, which
- 9:11is just taking the drama out of a golf course.
- 9:14He's a real analyst. He hits fairways, he hits
- 9:15screams. It's understandable that he's
- 9:19the betting favorite, but I think for me the betting
- 9:22favorite is Rory. Nobody has a better record at
- 9:24this place. Winning regular PGA Tour events,
- 9:26you know, winning, winning all the different ways you can win.
- 9:29Their bad weather, good weather, low scores, medium scores.
- 9:33He loves Quail Hollow and I and I really think that what
- 9:37happened at the Masters was a liberating event for Rory there.
- 9:41There's a, you know, a 10 or 11 year backup in the system where
- 9:45he didn't win these and he won the one that he needed to win.
- 9:48And I to me, I think it's going to open something where we see
- 9:51one of those, you know, Brooks Kaepka style, Tiger Woods style,
- 9:55you know, or even like Xander last year, you know, where you
- 9:58just were, you know, all of a sudden something bursts and they
- 10:01all come out. So if I'm betting that's that's
- 10:04where I'm putting my money. I mean, I'm certainly not going
- 10:06to tell you that that Scotty's not a wide investment, but if
- 10:11you can get Rory McIlroy and his odds are not the, you know, the
- 10:14short artist in the in the field, I mean, that's something
- 10:16you should take. You know, as we think back to
- 10:18the Masters, it was such a compelling final.
- 10:21Few holes in the television numbers were off the charts.
- 10:23Justin Rose obviously was a big part of that as well.
- 10:26And he's a massive price, which he was again.
- 10:29What about Justin Rose? Does he have another a good
- 10:31effort in him? Might you be looking at him
- 10:33maybe for a top ten finish? What's his weekend going to be
- 10:36like? He's been on my brain because
- 10:39Mark Blackburn teaches Justin and that book that we're
- 10:42finishing right now. And, and so to kind of be in the
- 10:45middle of this with Mark as this was happening really in the last
- 10:49two majors, just to finish second at the Open Championship
- 10:51last year too, and then to finish second at the Masters,
- 10:54You know, the, it's really been an interesting time.
- 10:57He's a guy who doesn't hit it as far as some of the other
- 10:59players. And he's actually 45 years old.
- 11:02I don't think people realize that, you know, he's not a, he's
- 11:04not the youngest guy. He doesn't hit it the farthest,
- 11:07but he's an incredible shape and he's an incredible technician is
- 11:11the way I would describe it. Nobody, nobody kind of kind of
- 11:14dissects a golf course better than he does.
- 11:17And so I don't know if that necessarily lends itself to a
- 11:20place where, you know, I think the players were trying to
- 11:23figure out a way not to make it sound insulting, but they said
- 11:26you just get up on the tear and try to hit it as far as you can.
- 11:28And that that doesn't that to me, that doesn't present much of
- 11:32A of a chess match as it does more of a boxing match.
- 11:35So, so I also, I think he hasn't really, he didn't feel all that
- 11:39great last week physically not you're not in terms of an
- 11:42injury, but just being I'll. So I think that's probably the
- 11:45reason why the odds are a little bit taller.
- 11:48Jordan Spieth is a PGA away from joining.
- 11:51Rory is amongst that that list of players who've won every one
- 11:55of the major. You know, you think back to his
- 11:572015, what a remarkable run he was on, right?
- 12:00He had three of the four the PGA was the one that escaped him.
- 12:04Is his game in a spot where he might be able to to join that
- 12:08elusive club? What do you think of him this
- 12:10week? Well, I think there's a there's
- 12:12a category of players that are just physically superior to
- 12:17others. You know, I think they're in
- 12:18that, you know, Class A category when you when you, when you
- 12:21think of, for example, what Rory can do with the ball with Scott,
- 12:24he can do with it, what Bryson can do with the ball.
- 12:27Those are just different players than what Jordan Spieth is.
- 12:31And I actually put Jordan kind of in that team category as
- 12:33Justin Rose. It's not a knock on what they
- 12:35are, what they do, but I think at this point in what where they
- 12:39are in their career, you know where their game is right now.
- 12:43Those are players like Zach Johnson was, you know, when he
- 12:46was winning majors or something in particular needed to happen.
- 12:49They needed to be an anomaly. You know, there needed to be a
- 12:52weather monomaly. There needed to be something,
- 12:54you know, Brian Harmon at the Open Championship a couple years
- 12:57ago. You know, there needs to be some
- 12:58kind of anomaly where the physically superior players
- 13:02aren't doing something. So I think it's a great story
- 13:07and I actually think, you know, Jordan's been able to benefit
- 13:10from a little bit different of a experience in this, you know,
- 13:15finish the career Grand Slam thing then Rory went through
- 13:18because Rory was so good and so dominant, you know, like Jordan
- 13:22Spieth was too. But we really haven't talked a
- 13:24lot about Jordan Spieth over the last few years.
- 13:26You know, when you have an injury that diffuses some of the
- 13:29talk, he's been able to kind of, you know, be away from the, you
- 13:34know, remember what Monty went through when he was the best
- 13:36player never to win a major. You know, all that talk I think
- 13:39is so difficult to deal with. I don't think he's had to carry
- 13:43around that as much as Rory did. So if you can be under the radar
- 13:47and, you know, come out and try to do it, I mean, I don't know
- 13:51that this is the best venue, but it is encouraging to see that he
- 13:55is playing better golf. I think he shot 61 a couple
- 13:58weeks ago at the Nose. I mean, you know, those are good
- 14:00signs. Sunday, do we need McElroy and
- 14:03Dechambeau to play with each other again in the final group?
- 14:06Wouldn't that be great theater? It would it cracked me up to
- 14:10hear the question in the press conference when someone said,
- 14:12oh, you know, Bryson, Bryson complained that you didn't talk
- 14:14to him during the round. And I'm just thinking back to
- 14:16the Tiger Woods days where if it had been, if it had been legal
- 14:21that, you know, stabbed somebody, Tiger Tiger might have
- 14:24killed the killed the people that he played with.
- 14:26I mean, I don't think he ever talked to anybody for 10 years.
- 14:28So we reached, you know, I think with social media, we've reached
- 14:32the point where there's so much, you know, aberration.
- 14:36You know, there's, you know, there's these groups of players
- 14:38that are kind of, you know, jocular buddies that go on trips
- 14:41together. I think people forget that for
- 14:44most competitive sports, I mean, the, the only talking that
- 14:49really tends to happen is is, you know, you're doing trash
- 14:52talking and golf doesn't really have a lot of trash talking.
- 14:54But we've reached a new level where you, you, you weren't
- 14:59congenial enough with the, with the person that you're trying to
- 15:01beat out on the golf course. You know, Speaking of social
- 15:04media and and Tiger, that's what it's become.
- 15:07Sadly, at this point, for whatever reason, maybe it's I go
- 15:10down these rabbit holes, I've I've inevitably come across just
- 15:14an unbelievable shock. But that Tiger Woods hit at some
- 15:17point in his prime. Not that we've forgotten how
- 15:20good that he is, but it's it's unfortunate that you know, some
- 15:24of the you know, people that are starting to get into the game
- 15:26now missed this, right. They were too young.
- 15:29He was he was unbelievable, was he not as we think that and I
- 15:33hope it's not over, but it sure seems like it is.
- 15:35My God, he was unreal. Not only was he unreal, I think
- 15:40the probably the unfortunate thing, it's very similar to what
- 15:44I think the Michael Jordan experiences, which is there are
- 15:47so many unbelievable shots. You know, so many unbelievable
- 15:51things that happened that he make.
- 15:52He made the unbelievable seem like it was just sort of a
- 15:55regular thing he always did and that and that's really unfair
- 15:59him because you know, the shots was able to pull off and the and
- 16:03the length of time that he was so dominant.
- 16:07And I think what people forget is just how much more dominant
- 16:10he was than anyone else. I mean there wasn't even
- 16:12anybody. I think it would be fair to say
- 16:14there wasn't anybody in second place.
- 16:16I mean you had the first you had the 1st place guy and then maybe
- 16:19somebody in 7th. That was about it.
- 16:21And I mean, I can remember talking to Brooks Kefka and he,
- 16:24I mean, he said that Tiger Woods single handedly changed the
- 16:28trajectory of Phil Mickelson's career.
- 16:30And that's really true. I mean, Phil Mickelson has had
- 16:33one of the six or seven best careers in the history of the
- 16:36PGA Tour. And Tiger probably took five or
- 16:39six major championships away from him just by being there.
- 16:43I mean, that's, that's an amazing, an amazing stat.
- 16:46Not really is. And there was going to be Sergio
- 16:48versus Tiger, remember that. Trying to shoe horn and to
- 16:51develop that rivalry there. There was no rivalry.
- 16:54He was just in the class, passed by himself.
- 16:56So who are you going to pick this week?
- 16:58Is it Roy to come back and and to start going on a little bit
- 17:01of a run here and to get to June with two of them, the first two
- 17:05majors already in the bang? Boy, it'd be fun to talk about
- 17:11some of that, you know, crazy, that crazy Grand Slam, you know,
- 17:14you'll finish the career Grand Slam, then win, you know, win
- 17:17them all in the same year. That's that's a pretty tall
- 17:20order. But I know you and I have had,
- 17:22you know, flavors of this conversation through the years.
- 17:25What I love about golf is when there are more, when there's
- 17:28more than one actor, you know, when there's more than one
- 17:30person, there's more than one player, more than one storyline.
- 17:34And I think the we're, we're getting to see that.
- 17:37I mean, Bryson is a fantastic storyline every major
- 17:40championship and what Xander Joplin did last year, winning
- 17:43two majors, but not winning player of the year, I mean,
- 17:45that's, that's just, it's amazing.
- 17:47And that's a testament to what Gotti Scheffler was able to do.
- 17:50So I, I like to see, you know, exactly what we saw at the
- 17:53Masters, which was, you know, watching Rory McIlroy basically
- 17:56go through a three hour long car crash, you know, get up, you
- 18:00know, have the chance to, to, to get this great personal goal and
- 18:04then, you know, falter and lose the lead and get it back again.
- 18:06I mean that that drama is fantastic.
- 18:10So I'd like to see Rory win just kind of as a payback for the,
- 18:14you know, the 10 years of agony that he's that he's been through
- 18:17trying to trying to make this stuff happen.
- 18:19He took the country with him that day too, you know.
- 18:21We we the absent flows of his final round.
- 18:25You're a sports fan. If you got a heart, you just, I
- 18:29think I could speak for the majority of people, right?
- 18:31It was like we were playing alongside of him, almost
- 18:35vicariously through him. It was unbelievable.
- 18:38Matt and Jordan, go ahead. We got time.
- 18:40I was just going to say and the problems he went through are the
- 18:43ones that we go through. Right.
- 18:45You hit the hit, the incredible shot that hit, the wet shot in
- 18:48the water. I mean, it's just amazing.
- 18:49Unthinkable. Regular person golf.
- 18:52Yeah, it truly was. Talk to you on Monday, brother.
- 18:55Reach out over the weekend. Thanks as always for doing this,
- 18:57Matt Rudy. Appreciate it.
- 18:58You bet. See.
- 18:59Good to talk to you, Matt. Rudy, formerly of Golf Digest,
- 19:01covered the sport for literally decades.
- 19:03That was one of the the one of the events of the year, right?
- 19:06When we look back at the year in in sports, the second weekend of
- 19:11April is certainly going to be on that list because what a what
- 19:15a satisfying result to begin with, because I think the
- 19:19majority of the public, unless you had a bet on Justin Rose,
- 19:23both of them, you know, foreign born players.
- 19:26But rooting for this guy to finally get this monkey off of
- 19:29his back and to accomplish a feat that had eluded him in
- 19:33heartbreaking fashion for so many years.
- 19:36Maybe this is finally going to be the year that he's able to
- 19:39put together and have to go to a playoff in order to do it.
- 19:42And the television numbers reflected it was unbelievable.
- 19:46All right, a couple of things that we're going to get to.
- 19:49Obviously the schedule is starting to trickle out in the
- 19:53in the NFL, We'll get it tonight.
- 19:56Some of the bigger days, it looks as though Christmas Day is
- 19:59going to have a triple header. Obviously we know that what what
- 20:04lies ahead when it comes to Thanksgiving.
- 20:06But if indeed we do get the Christmas Day.
- 20:10Well, here's what this is what is out there for now.
- 20:12So we'll just throw this out there subject to change
- 20:15obviously, as this is not official.
- 20:17I've not seen this come from from the NFL Twitter account,
- 20:21but there's certain RX account. But there's certainly a number
- 20:23of people that believe that this is it.
- 20:25So this is what Thanksgiving looks like.
- 20:27Apparently the early game would be Green Bay at Detroit.
- 20:30Love it. Two teams, obviously Detroit and
- 20:34their Rd. schedule. My God, it's not fair if you've
- 20:37looked at that, but Green Bay, Detroit, yes please.
- 20:39Kansas City and Dallas, middle of the afternoon. 330 kick off
- 20:43in Dallas, the Chiefs and the Cowboys and then Tampa Bay and
- 20:46the Rams at night. Christmas Day, triple header
- 20:50Detroit at Minnesota to get things going.
- 20:53I'm guessing that would be noon, maybe 11:30, but noon for that
- 20:58one. Then Dallas and Washington, NFC
- 21:01North, Jaden Daniels and and the in the prime slot on Christmas
- 21:06Day and then Christmas evening, Denver at Kansas City, those six
- 21:11prime time games. If these are indeed accurate, by
- 21:15all accounts, the Denver Kansas City game is because that one
- 21:18was that was tweeted from a reputable source.
- 21:22Not that these haven't been, but this seemingly.
- 21:24We'll wait for confirmation, but if that's what we get, oh boy,
- 21:27buckle up. How good would that be?
- 21:29We'll take a time out. Trent will be here at one point.
- 21:31We'll do our recap of what we saw yesterday.
- 21:34Both in the NBA, probably not a lot in the NHL.
- 21:38I was really just down in the dumps.
- 21:40I thought my Jets outplayed the Stars.
- 21:41I really did, and I'm a Jet fan. But the better team on the ice
- 21:45last night was not the winning team.
- 21:46In my opinion. The team that had the better
- 21:48goaltender was the winning team. And Jake Ottinger was by far the
- 21:52best goalie on the ice last night.
- 21:54I don't know what it is. I'm tired of talking about it.
- 21:56Tired to try to figure out what in the hell happens this guy
- 21:59once you get past Game 82. But it is in his head.
- 22:05We'll do that baseball conversation coming up.
- 22:08Cappy kicks off the second hour of the conversation.
- 22:11Pete Rose is eligible. We'll talk to a Hall of Fame
- 22:14voter, our friend Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com.
- 22:18He joins Trent and I in 20 minutes.
- 22:20Miller and Condon underway on a Wednesday.
- 22:24But before we go to break, yes, let's get to this bonus bucks

- 23:06listening to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 23:08I'm Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 23:09Iowa Sports Radio Network on about 12 minutes, 15 minutes.
- 23:14We will talk to Matt Snyder. He's a Hall of Fame voter in
- 23:16Major League Baseball. We'll get his thoughts on Pete
- 23:20Rose being eligible, which opens the door potentially for him to
- 23:24gain admission to Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame.
- 23:28Not till 2027, but still that door is now been open to crack.
- 23:33TC Good to see you my friend. Hello, good to see you again.
- 23:37Let's let's get into the NBA from last night in our short
- 23:40segment here with Snyder coming up.
- 23:43Look it, it seemed like a foregone conclusion we were
- 23:46going to get Cav salts in the Eastern Conference final.
- 23:49Now it seems like a long shot that well, we know there's no
- 23:52shot that Cleveland's going to be there, and Boston's up
- 23:55against it with the injury. But the Pacers March on.
- 23:59How did we miss this team? It's a good question.
- 24:02It goes back to the. I mean I get.
- 24:04You and I missing because you know.
- 24:06We weren't following it right, but how nationally you can miss
- 24:09it. It's a team that made the
- 24:10Eastern Conference Finals a year ago.
- 24:12I think more than anything, it just felt like the Cleveland was
- 24:17that much better. But I've mentioned it coming
- 24:20into the series when we saw that price tag a better than four to
- 24:22one with the Pacers. Yeah, Clinton's better, that
- 24:26much better limited sample size for us.
- 24:29But on the national scale, does it go back to the Halliburton
- 24:32question? The the overrated part of it,
- 24:35people, Trent on a national scene not believing in a big
- 24:38moment in a big series. That their best players
- 24:40overrated. How can they go anywhere?
- 24:41And maybe that is a piece of that.
- 24:43And because it wasn't just players that had that
- 24:46conversation about Tyrese Halliburton.
- 24:48There's plenty of people in NBA circles that had those types of
- 24:51conversations. He's proven them wrong.
- 24:53I'll say. Back-to-back Eastern Conference
- 24:55finals and now they get the Knicks.
- 24:58Who would you favor in that series?
- 25:01Knicks will have homecourt. Because of that reason, probably
- 25:05the Knicks. But I think I might back the
- 25:06Pacers and, you know, I might go a step further.
- 25:09I mean, should we be looking at Halliburton's price to be the
- 25:11MVP of the of the NBA playoffs? Because if the Pacers are going
- 25:16to get there and they're one of four teams.
- 25:19Right. They've punched their ticket
- 25:21already. I mean, is of of anybody on that
- 25:26team? I mean, I like Siakam.
- 25:27Mm hmm, sure. Nemard's a nice player.
- 25:31But Halliburton, if they're going to win, it's going to be
- 25:33Tyrese that carries him. Can you get double digits on him
- 25:36at this point? You to win now.
- 25:38Remember, what he did beforehand is not supposed to matter, it's
- 25:41Finals MVP. So the playoffs.
- 25:43So it's not playoffs MVP. Oh well then forget about all
- 25:47that. It's Finals MVP.
- 25:48Because then it's going to be too short of a price if he's
- 25:50there. He is 12:50 to win that award.
- 25:54Eastern Conference Finals MVP plus 210.
- 25:58Yeah, at this point, the ship has sailed.
- 26:00Yes, but boy, you have one of those tickets.
- 26:02That's too bad. That could have been a hefty,
- 26:05hefty, yeah. I mean, what, what a series he
- 26:08had. You know, I and and if if it's
- 26:11the Indiana Pacers that get there, so be it'll be great
- 26:14because there's a lot of folks that'll be rooting for Tyrese
- 26:16Halliburton. I mean, he's a good guy by all
- 26:18accounts. I mean, his dog's name is Ames.
- 26:21So Ames made an impact on Halliburton.
- 26:24And look what Iowa State did for him to get him to this point.
- 26:26And obviously his talent has got him to Iowa State and has taken
- 26:29him to the NBA and the stardom that he has reached.
- 26:32But that would be great. But if we get Knicks versus T
- 26:37Wolves and that trade keeps coming up, the the hatred
- 26:40Vincenzo, he got into it with some some of his former team.
- 26:44So we'll see where that goes. The other game, look at Djokic
- 26:50was not tired, no putting in 44. But the narrative was that this
- 26:55team seemingly is wearing down. It looked like his teammates did
- 26:59because OKC took it to them in the fourth quarter.
- 27:02It was the defensive intensity and that's what you talk about
- 27:04with this OK C team and it's not about the flashing and what you
- 27:07get out of SGA it. Was really good though.
- 27:10It's what they are on the defensive end.
- 27:11They are an elite defensive team.
- 27:14They were in trouble and I thought the only way that Denver
- 27:17could win the series is winning game five and Game 6.
- 27:20I don't see them being able to come back to OK C after winning
- 27:23on Game 6 on Saturday and Game 6IN Denver coming back and then
- 27:27winning back-to-back. I thought that was the
- 27:29opportunity. They're right there.
- 27:30It's 8068 and then 10 minute mark of the fourth quarter, it
- 27:35just went stagnant and they tried so many different things
- 27:38and they got some looks that just wouldn't go down.
- 27:40And that's going to happen in basketball.
- 27:43But more than anything, it was the defense for the Thunder that
- 27:45completely took it out of it. And it was another one of those
- 27:48snap of the fingers, 12 point game.
- 27:50Nope, it's two point game. It happened that quickly in OK C
- 27:54Shay down the stretch, but still Jokic's three pointer off the
- 27:59wrong foot. What can't he do with what on
- 28:01the shot clock to tie it back up?
- 28:05It's unthinkable to have a guy this limited his layup that
- 28:08happened right before that. So he's got Chet Holger, who's 7
- 28:12toe 2 with a wingspan of, I don't know, feels like 8 foot.
- 28:16About 180 lbs. He's right there.
- 28:19There's two other big guys around him.
- 28:20He gets at best 4 inches off the ground.
- 28:23He just rolls it off, his fingers it in for a lamp.
- 28:25OKC in the T Wolves, if we do get that in the Western
- 28:28Conference final, it's looking like that.
- 28:30I guess they split the series this year 2 games apiece and
- 28:33then the two games Minnesota won.
- 28:35Holmgren did not play in those games.
- 28:37But you know what? I take my chances.
- 28:39Rudy Gobert against Holmgren. I mean, that's a man.
- 28:42Gobert's a man I'm right there with.
- 28:44You, I mean, I think, oh God, if the T Wolves get to the final of
- 28:48this thing, and they're certainly in a position to do so
- 28:52at this point, We'll see where it goes from here.
- 28:54Did you watch any of the Cubs last night?
- 28:55I saw the walk off. Did you see it?
- 28:57Saw that boy, Justin Turner needed that in the worst way.
- 29:00It seemed to me like if the next time that the Cubs needed to
- 29:04make a roster move, Turner was probably on that short list,
- 29:07right? Absolutely DFA guy in his 40s.
- 29:11What's going to happen? I didn't even realize until I
- 29:13saw the box score last night. That was his first double of
- 29:17the. Year.
- 29:17Is that his first? I didn't know that.
- 29:18Either I mean to not have a double until May 13th, that's
- 29:23unconscionable. No, it's the guy that's trying
- 29:25to. Is that going to change
- 29:26anything? No, I don't think so.
- 29:28But but he had his night last night and and his teammates
- 29:31couldn't get to second base quick enough to start jumping
- 29:33all over him. Obviously he's a hell of a
- 29:36career, heck of a career, and he's trying to extend it.
- 29:39Why wouldn't you're a Major League player?
- 29:41Why would you ever want to give that up if you still don't?
- 29:43And he's in Toronto. He's in Seattle last year, at
- 29:46Cubs this year, but seems like his Major League service days
- 29:50are probably coming to an end. I think the best thing I saw
- 29:52last night, night in baseball was Javi Baez, a guy that we've
- 29:55been. What a story.
- 29:57We've been kind of tiptoeing around talking about it, just in
- 29:59in flashes here and there. A dead contract, just dead
- 30:04weight, a waste. What a miss.
- 30:06They're going to eat it. We saw the flailing swings that
- 30:09happened in Chicago. That's part of the game.
- 30:11Embarrassing. But that's all it was because
- 30:14you didn't also get the good that we used to get from Javi
- 30:16Baez. It was only the bad that's what
- 30:18it was from him both defensively and offensively that those wild
- 30:22flails ever what's while go home run that dried up to bounce back
- 30:26in this fashion, doing it after a position change, playing at a
- 30:29high level in center field. He's not playing left field.
- 30:33Is that parked over at first base?
- 30:35He's doing it at a very difficult position this late in
- 30:38his career. That is great to see.
- 30:40I love it, Trent. I do.
- 30:41I mean, this is a guy was washed up as you mentioned, Detroit
- 30:44made just a terrible move on with that signing.
- 30:47Had to find him a new position. They were there were serious
- 30:50conversations about just eating the contract and and him being
- 30:54out of baseball. But that home run that he hit
- 30:56the game-winning home run, it looked like one of his Chicago
- 30:59Cubs home runs. Just a no doubt about it.
- 31:02He knows it's gone. Place is going crazy.
- 31:04But yeah, I couldn't agree with you more.
- 31:06Good to see I. Saw a camera angle from the
- 31:09first base dugout and you can see the what I'd been the
- 31:15catcher. I can't remember who it was for
- 31:17the Red Sox, but just the catcher.
- 31:19And as soon as Bias hits, that he takes.
- 31:20Walk into his dugout, he. Takes his helmet off and you
- 31:23just see the disdain. I don't think the pitcher hit
- 31:25the spot he was looking for there.
- 31:27I'm looking at the catcher's face after that one.
- 31:29Oh, he hung a low pitch, 80 something miles an hour and just
- 31:32parked it over the fence. We'll take a time out more
- 31:35baseball conversation. We're going to switch gears.
- 31:37I wanted to get Matt Snyder today rather than hold this to
- 31:40Monday because A, it's time, it's timely and B, I'd want to
- 31:44talk baseball with Matt Snyder, not just all Hall of Fame stuff
- 31:46when he joins us as he does every Monday.
- 31:49So we'll pick his brain. He's a Hall of Fame voter.
- 31:51It means a lot to him. He does a lot of work.
- 31:54It's not he just doesn't fill out a ballot, mail it right
- 31:56back. He puts a lot of thought into
- 31:59his Hall of Fame ballot. And we'll talk to him about, you
- 32:02know, what does he he expects his fellow Hall of Fame voters
- 32:05to do? Is it going to be a slam dunk in
- 32:082027 that Pete Rose becomes eligible?
- 32:11We'll do that with Snyder when we come back, Miller and Condon
- 32:14on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:19I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:21Network, 1/4 before 1. David Kaplan in our number two.
- 32:27Look forward to catching up with the cap man.
- 32:28But right now, little bonus Matt Snyder, who joins us every
- 32:31Monday to talk baseball. And I didn't want to wait until
- 32:34Monday and have the Pete Rose Hall of Fame conversation
- 32:37dominate our Monday conversation because I like talking baseball
- 32:41between the lines. And I guess at one point they're
- 32:43all bored between the lines. But this thing has taken on a
- 32:46life of its own over the last couple of decades.
- 32:48And now the door is is open and is the permanent ineligibility.
- 32:54Ineligibility has been waved. Therefore, Pete Rose, Shoeless
- 32:59Joe Jackson, those are the two big names may at some point gain
- 33:03access to the prestigious Cooperstown Baseball Hall of
- 33:08Fame. Matt Snyder is a voter amongst
- 33:11the for the Hall of Fame and he joins us.
- 33:13Matt, first of all, thank you so much for doing this for us.
- 33:16I really appreciate it. And I know how much the Hall of
- 33:19Fame and the and your vote mean to you and how serious that you
- 33:23take it. You've got a year.
- 33:24Nothing will happen until 2027, but first of all, I guess, what
- 33:29did the announcement surprise you that that the Commissioner
- 33:33decided to go the direction that he did not?
- 33:36Really, actually, I mean, once it seems like, especially once
- 33:41Pete Rose died and then once it seems like that he was Manfred
- 33:47was getting pressure politically and you know, what's what's the
- 33:53harm? And I guess the and at this
- 33:56point reinstating everybody on the list that couldn't just be
- 33:59Pete Rose. But it's so many of these guys
- 34:02have been dead for 60 plus years.
- 34:05The only thing it's going to change in all likelihood is
- 34:09certain bust in the Hall of Fame and that's it.
- 34:12As far as the deterrent for players gambling on baseball,
- 34:15there's still a gigantic deterrent in place.
- 34:17And especially with as much money as the players make
- 34:19nowadays, it just doesn't make sense as it did at least
- 34:24financially back when the Black Sox scandal happened and the
- 34:27White Sox threw that World Series.
- 34:29Players didn't make that much money then and they were getting
- 34:31paid off by people because they weren't making them.
- 34:34You're talking now about guys, even the the league minimum is
- 34:38well over 500,000 a year. And most of the guys making the
- 34:41league minimum think they're going to be good enough someday
- 34:42to make billions. Billions.
- 34:44It's just not worth it to gamble.
- 34:46So in terms of all that stuff, I don't think that much was ever
- 34:51going to change except the Hall of Fame discussion.
- 34:53And once pressure was applied from the the president, I
- 34:59assumed that this was the route Manfred was going to go.
- 35:01What do we know about the Rose family now and the way that
- 35:05they're going to handle this, something that Pete Rose begged
- 35:07for for decades upon decades and and waiting for this to happen,
- 35:11obviously after his passing. Do we know what the family
- 35:14thinks about this? And are there some fences that
- 35:16are it's going to have to be mended when eventually this is
- 35:19going to happen with the family? Yeah, I have no idea on that
- 35:23front. I know that as much as Rose
- 35:25always wanted to be in the Hall of Fame, I I would assume that
- 35:28they would say they'll they'll take it no matter how they can
- 35:31get it. But something that it seemed
- 35:34like you were kind of alluding to there is Is there the
- 35:37possibility that they're bitter that it didn't happen till after
- 35:39he died? Absolutely, yeah.
- 35:41So you could see there being some kind of issue there, but
- 35:44haven't heard anything at all. Remember, while there was always
- 35:49support specifically from his son who played in the minor
- 35:51league for him, most of the chirping that you heard about
- 35:57how he should be reinstated and should be in baseball, it was
- 35:59from Pete himself. He didn't really allow many
- 36:02people to talk for him. He didn't need a mouthpiece, he
- 36:04was the mouthpiece. So no, the short answer is that
- 36:08I have no idea. So when he does become eligible
- 36:11in 2027, he's on the ballot for the first time.
- 36:15What do you think he needs 75% to to break that threshold and
- 36:19to gain access into the Hall? How do you think it goes?
- 36:23What do you what do you think your fellow Hall of farmers?
- 36:25How will they look at Pete Rose the first time he's on the
- 36:29ballot? It's so tough to to figure out
- 36:32those veterans committee votes as it is because you don't even
- 36:37know who's going to be on the panel until it's usually about a
- 36:41month before or generally when they announce the the people who
- 36:44are going to be on that veteran committee ballot is when they
- 36:47also reveal who the 16 person panel is going to be.
- 36:51So you just have no idea. I remembered a couple of years
- 36:54ago when the Barry Bonds, the Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens
- 36:57were all on the same veterans committee ballot.
- 37:00And there were Theo Epstein and a few other Red Sox connected
- 37:03people on it. And there were some conspiracy
- 37:05theories and like, oh, they're just putting a bunch of Red Sox
- 37:07related people on there to get Schilling.
- 37:09And then Schilling got like 3 votes out of the 16.
- 37:12So, but there's also been cases where Tony Larusso was on the
- 37:16panel the year that Harold Bain's got in, and everybody
- 37:19said Tony Larusso was like pounding the table for Harold
- 37:23Danes to get in the Hall of Fame, and it worked.
- 37:24And he swayed a bunch of people. So it's hard telling who's going
- 37:28to be on the panel. It's hard telling it which way
- 37:30that people are going to want to swing things.
- 37:33For the most part, publicly, guys have mostly supported Pete
- 37:37Rose, but they don't have to reveal these conversations.
- 37:40They're behind closed doors and none of these other Hall of Fame
- 37:43gambled on the game. And they knew that was a line
- 37:46that they could not cross. So it's entirely possible you
- 37:49get a group of people in there who do not want deep heroes in
- 37:52the Hall of Fame and would think that he was going to stain it.
- 37:54It's also entirely possible that he flies in unanimously.
- 37:57So it's it's really, really tough to tell my hunches.
- 38:02There is a pretty polarized division no matter who you put
- 38:05in there and whether it's 12 against 4, then he would get in,
- 38:108080 would not get in. But I think that most people are
- 38:13pretty well ingrained to the point that I don't know how
- 38:17much, you know, the thing about this committee is they meet
- 38:20together in person and they discuss it and they hash it out
- 38:23almost like they're a jury. I don't know how much people are
- 38:27going to get swayed one way or the other.
- 38:29It seems like everybody's mind's been made-up for a long time on
- 38:31Pete. Is there any other names that we
- 38:34should know outside of Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe?
- 38:36I know the other Black Sox White Sox guys are also mentioned
- 38:39there, but are there any other names that popped up here that a
- 38:42baseball historian like yourself that we should know as more
- 38:45casual baseball fans? Well, you know the the next best
- 38:50player on there was Eddie Seacott, who was the ace of the
- 38:54White Sox when they won the World Series in 1917.
- 38:56If they had a sign on the ward at the time, he would have won
- 38:59that. He won 2 ERA titles.
- 39:01He had a career 2.3 DRA. He won over 200 games.
- 39:05He he would be, if there was no stain of a scandal on his
- 39:09resume, he would be a fringe Hall of Fame type.
- 39:13For example, if you just sort of starting pitchers by war, he's
- 39:16like 68 and there are 67 Hall of Fame starting pitchers.
- 39:20So he's like right on that borderline right there.
- 39:24And he's ahead of a few guys there who were contemporaries
- 39:27such as Three Finger Brown, Berly Grimes.
- 39:29He's the head of some of those guys, Joe Mcginnity, but he's
- 39:33not a huge amount ahead of them. Plus he was one of supposedly
- 39:38the main guys who was in on throwing the World Series.
- 39:40So I think that probably hurts his case a little bit.
- 39:44The other one that really intrigued me was Benny, not
- 39:50Benny Koff KAUFF. He was known as the Ty Cobb of
- 39:55the Federal League. He had two seasons in the
- 39:59Federal League where if they had an MVP, he probably would have
- 40:01won it. He came over to the majors.
- 40:03He had very good numbers through age 29.
- 40:06And then him and his brother were implicated in a car theft.
- 40:09They ended up being acquitted. But right after that was right
- 40:13after the Black Sox angle and the commissioner, Judge Landis,
- 40:16was trying to clean up the game. And he thought any whip of
- 40:18anybody who had character integrity concerns, he wanted
- 40:22them out. So he'd banned him for baseball.
- 40:24For that but he was acquitted. It didn't look like he did it.
- 40:29I could see a special case there where hey this is kind of a joke
- 40:35that he got banned in the 1st place.
- 40:36It was just bad circumstances. It looked like he was going to
- 40:39have a Hall of Fame career. His numbers aren't all the way
- 40:42there but it's because his career was cut short halfway
- 40:45through it and there are cases of guys who died.
- 40:48Ross Young's is 1 for example from the Giants back in the 19
- 40:51teens. If you look him up, he only
- 40:53played ten years. His his right stats.
- 40:55I'm talking about like batting average on base, plugging.
- 40:57Were there his counting stats, which is compiling hit double,
- 41:01stuff like that. We're not there.
- 41:02But since he died at such a young age, everybody kind of
- 41:05thought, hey, he was going to be a Hall of Famer, let's put him
- 41:07in. I could see cough being
- 41:09something like that. That's not going to take place
- 41:12for a while, though. I feel like it's going to be
- 41:13several years because they've got to get through at least Rose
- 41:16and Jackson, and then there's also going to be a lot of other
- 41:19guys from the contemporary era who are going to be considered
- 41:22anyway. Matt, thanks for doing this.
- 41:24Thanks for us. Appreciate it.
- 41:25Want to get you in here and get your thoughts as a Hall of Fame
- 41:27voter how this is going to go and what this means.
- 41:30And we appreciate what you do for us.
- 41:32Matt. We'll talk to you on Monday.
- 41:33Promise I won't bug you between now.
