- 0:45Speaker 1: notice something new. My son Jimmy has been on the
- 0:48Speaker 1: show before, but he's never he's always had that camera.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You were on the show here and the camera was
- 0:53Speaker 1: behind your head. Yeah, because we had a prohibition on
- 0:56Speaker 1: you seeing your cute little face on screen. But then
- 0:59Speaker 1: you hit fifteen years of age, the arbitrary number. You
- 1:03Speaker 1: have a learner's permit. What else happened?
- 1:09Speaker 2: You have something changed in the mind of his parents.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yep, Well he got to that age.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Well that's not totally what happened.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Oh did you tell me what happened?
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, Jimmy was he went on a hunt with you
- 1:25Speaker 3: and you were going to share a picture of his hunt,
- 1:30Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden and I was cool
- 1:32Speaker 3: with that. But then all of a sudden he had
- 1:34Speaker 3: like a public Instagram account.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yeah, because I decided that his age. Remember that remembers
- 1:40Speaker 1: that joke, the punchline to the joke I said, I'll
- 1:42Speaker 1: tell you the punchline when you get a learner's permit. Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: just because that felt like once you have a learners permit.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So he got his learn he's just got his learners permit.
- 1:53Speaker 1: He's fifteen, and now he can now when he's on
- 1:55Speaker 1: the show, he could people can see what the kid
- 1:57Speaker 1: looks like.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 1:58Speaker 1: The only thing that happens he got taller.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It wasn't like a decision. We didn't like discuss like
- 2:03Speaker 3: now is the time and this is okay, it's sort of.
- 2:07Speaker 3: It caught me unawares a bit too when that happened.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Just before being I can hide under a rock.
- 2:16Speaker 3: No, he can't. But the other two kids, so you're
- 2:18Speaker 3: do you think the other two kids when they turn
- 2:21Speaker 3: fifteen will like, that's the age that's when they can
- 2:25Speaker 3: have Instagram accounts.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Not Rosie, not the girl. No, no, okay, that's not happening.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The other boy, girl, the other boy. Sure, uh so
- 2:37Speaker 1: Jimmy's here.
- 2:37Speaker 5: This is this.
- 2:38Speaker 1: He's been on the show. How many times you've been
- 2:40Speaker 1: on the show, Buddy.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Hey kids Trivia?
- 2:42Speaker 6: Once and then I did one podcast in Wisconsin, and
- 2:48Speaker 6: then I did one Alaska, and then this isn't so.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Oh he's been on the show all the time.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yeah, none other times regular four.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Jimmy just caught it. Jimmy just caught a nice fish.
- 2:59Speaker 1: This spring, jim me and I were out fishing and
- 3:03Speaker 1: and I hit a spot and and remember I said,
- 3:05Speaker 1: the water talk to me. The what's that Steve's big butthole?
- 3:12Speaker 1: The water talked to me and we pulled in and
- 3:15Speaker 1: I said, this is where the water talked to me.
- 3:18Speaker 1: You dropped your jig down and what happened?
- 3:20Speaker 6: Caught a sixty five pound holdn mm hmm.
- 3:24Speaker 5: What did the water? What did the water say when.
- 3:27Speaker 2: It talked to you?
- 3:27Speaker 1: It said, come fish.
- 3:28Speaker 7: Here, Steve, Fish fish, Steve, fish Steve.
- 3:34Speaker 2: That doesn't sound like the voice of Steve's Big buttle Well,
- 3:38Speaker 2: it's gotta travel through a lot of water.
- 3:40Speaker 1: After it comes up, it's distorted. Another new set is here.
- 3:45Speaker 1: It is that is annoying as it is to have
- 3:47Speaker 1: seth as a neighbor. Oh, it's annoying. Uh, I'll just
- 3:51Speaker 1: paid off, just paid off because people I had bought that.
- 3:59Speaker 1: You'd think that would pass through two little pieces of
- 4:02Speaker 1: illuminum in a bolt hole, but don't. It's too short.
- 4:07Speaker 1: So I went to my neighbor and said, I need
- 4:11Speaker 1: stainless steel. I produced that whole pile of them. To
- 4:18Speaker 1: have good.
- 4:19Speaker 7: Neighbors, I'd buy those bolts for going through the chain.
- 4:23Speaker 7: I was unsure about length, so I got two different
- 4:26Speaker 7: lengths because I knew you'd hmmm.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Well you could just got one with more thread on it.
- 4:31Speaker 8: Well, I got two different lengths.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Well, it will always put them to use. Yeah, Yannis here,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Jannis ran. Uh, we haven't talked to yany since this happened.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yannis ran recently ran one of those hundred mile races
- 4:46Speaker 1: this morning. He got circumspect about it. Is that? Is
- 4:49Speaker 1: that what it's called when you kind of get like
- 4:51Speaker 1: you start thinking back.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Yeah, when you're able to look at it from a distance.
- 4:55Speaker 1: He was sitting right over in that chair and he
- 4:57Speaker 1: got circumspect and he said, you know a thing about it?
- 5:00Speaker 1: And I thought it was gonna be something like the
- 5:02Speaker 1: mental gaming. He was like the chap ass, like you
- 5:09Speaker 1: just can't picture the chap ass.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:12Speaker 8: I think that would stick with you, Like.
- 5:15Speaker 1: He said, crippling chap ass. There's no way you're going
- 5:19Speaker 1: to run one hundred miles without chat.
- 5:20Speaker 5: Was there something you put on it?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, lots of it. I use a product called
- 5:25Speaker 2: Squirrels nut butter.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I've heard of that.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I think people use a product called body glide whatever.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Any some vasoline would probably working. Then it seems like
- 5:38Speaker 2: all the time. But if I had to guess every one.
- 5:46Speaker 8: To two hours, are you are you carrying it with you?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Or you get yeah, I have like a I had
- 5:51Speaker 2: like a little baby one, and I had started with
- 5:54Speaker 2: it full and I used it up to the point
- 5:57Speaker 2: where at a later ad station I had to refill
- 5:59Speaker 2: from the tub.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So I got where was the bigger tub?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Traveling with my crew?
- 6:05Speaker 1: First off, you probably to tell people a little bit
- 6:06Speaker 1: what we're saying. You ran one hundred miles.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, at a race called the Crazy Mountain one hundred,
- 6:11Speaker 2: which happened in the Crazy Mountains of Montana, which is
- 6:14Speaker 2: I don't know, northeast of Bows when maybe ninety minutes
- 6:17Speaker 2: or so, depending on what trailhead. You go, Tom, Yeah,
- 6:22Speaker 2: hunter miler had twenty three thousand feet of elevation gain
- 6:27Speaker 2: through the into the entire course Mount Everest.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Yeah. What's ever twenty nine?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, somewhere in there, and.
- 6:36Speaker 1: It was twenty nine. There's twenty eight something.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Yeah, close to twenty long ways, anyways, that's up there,
- 6:44Speaker 2: and yeah, my first one at that distance. Uh, I've
- 6:47Speaker 2: done a couple of fifties working up to that distance,
- 6:51Speaker 2: and uh yeah. I started on July twenty fifth, finished
- 6:54Speaker 2: on July twenty six, thirty three hours after I started.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Thirty three hours of running, running, and hiking and chat
- 7:03Speaker 1: ass kick in.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Uh, not that far into it mile thirty So I
- 7:11Speaker 2: don't know, late in the afternoon, midday of the first day.
- 7:16Speaker 1: You know, chap asses, young Jimmy.
- 7:18Speaker 6: I can take a wild guess, picture your button.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Okay, going like that?
- 7:27Speaker 3: Does that happen all the time while hunting?
- 7:30Speaker 1: No, what chapass comes from? Some guys sweaty, Some people
- 7:34Speaker 1: just suffer. Some people have debilitating chap ass.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Okay, do you know I have.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Had chap ass? I wouldn't say I have debilitating chap ass.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I only get chap ass in hot climates.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Be honest.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Is it a common enough thing that you would like
- 7:49Speaker 7: see someone on the side of the trail applying.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Oh you don't stop to apply.
- 7:56Speaker 8: What do you mean?
- 7:58Speaker 2: What you just you know?
- 7:59Speaker 8: You your hand down there and.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you get out your chap ass man go
- 8:05Speaker 1: down through or reach.
- 8:07Speaker 2: You go both depending on what you know. So yeah,
- 8:12Speaker 2: you might doclosure. Yeah, like one of my testes like
- 8:16Speaker 2: hangs a little bit lower, like I think, like it
- 8:19Speaker 2: does with a lot of men, you know, and that
- 8:21Speaker 2: one tends to just get a little bit more. So yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I would hit that from the front, but mine it's
- 8:30Speaker 2: definitely start. I got a couple of theories because this
- 8:32Speaker 2: is something I had not suffered from at all for
- 8:35Speaker 2: most of my life, even though I had been a
- 8:37Speaker 2: runner and it had done some longer distance.
- 8:39Speaker 3: And it never happened to you, never, not even.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Kind of no.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Okay, and hold I got hung up on So one
- 8:49Speaker 1: of them hangs down a little bit, Yeah, and that
- 8:54Speaker 1: causes chafing.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Well I think it's chafing on the fabric.
- 8:58Speaker 1: But one is in his body's not. Yeah, yeah, Jimmy,
- 9:03Speaker 1: when a man gets all right, So that's how it
- 9:13Speaker 1: makes sure I'm clear Okay, here's your nuts. One is
- 9:17Speaker 1: like this rubbing your undies and his body.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it is not. It's sitting high enough something something's different, you.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Know, wouldn't like like sport underwear change that.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Yeah, And honestly sometimes I try to like jack everything
- 9:34Speaker 2: up a little bit more to have more support. You know,
- 9:38Speaker 2: things are just you have.
- 9:39Speaker 1: To go Taylor, like I need to have a special
- 9:45Speaker 1: sense one side of my underwear.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Uh talk, So when did you first figure out that
- 9:53Speaker 3: that was happening?
- 9:56Speaker 2: You know it's some other race and uh, I think
- 9:59Speaker 2: it was a fit am that I did earlier this summer,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and luckily I had this little tub with me at
- 10:04Speaker 2: that time, because had I not had it, I don't
- 10:06Speaker 2: know if I would have made it to the next
- 10:07Speaker 2: AID station. Definitely not running. I would have like limped in.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And at the age station they have it because it's.
- 10:13Speaker 2: So oh yeah for sure, for sure.
- 10:16Speaker 7: What takes people like people that are in good enough
- 10:18Speaker 7: shape to complete it?
- 10:19Speaker 8: What takes them out? Blisters, chap ass.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Definitely those two things could.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Can take you out. You know who you know who
- 10:28Speaker 1: gets terrible?
- 10:28Speaker 4: Uh?
- 10:29Speaker 3: You know what is you're going to talk about? Who
- 10:33Speaker 3: gets terrible? Chap ass.
- 10:35Speaker 1: No, no a thing that where guys going through the
- 10:38Speaker 1: buds program. Oh yeah, the sand, the sand in your
- 10:42Speaker 1: shorts or the sand in your pants will people will
- 10:47Speaker 1: tap out because of it, because of just because picture
- 10:50Speaker 1: all those hours and days wet sand packed up in there.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and they're like they go running for hours on
- 10:56Speaker 2: end without changing those clothes.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So yeah, it's thinking of that. It always seems miserable.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I never pictured what.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You're I have a lot of friends that just like
- 11:05Speaker 3: summertime and their thighs.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Women, Yeah, women deal with this.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It's not chap ass.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It's like chap thigh, chap thigh.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's lots of different products for it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And from when your thighs are rubbing on the inside.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, like just walking inches apart.
- 11:21Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't got I don't know.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Inches apart because well, you don't have like twig legs,
- 11:30Speaker 3: but you don't have a lot of.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Well I just can't picture my thighs.
- 11:34Speaker 5: You don't have like linebacker thighs.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You just like, no, you don't have that high ass
- 11:38Speaker 2: like Peda Linz.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, so I gotta I just I'm
- 11:45Speaker 1: so hung up on the chaca. This is just a
- 11:47Speaker 1: miserable feeling. So blisters take you out, chap ass takes
- 11:50Speaker 1: you out.
- 11:50Speaker 2: And I would say probably the next most common thing,
- 11:53Speaker 2: just because I've heard about it a lot and it
- 11:55Speaker 2: definitely almost took me out, is uh nausey. And I
- 12:01Speaker 2: would say that that is connected to what people call
- 12:04Speaker 2: it GI distress, and I think GI distress comes in
- 12:07Speaker 2: many different forms. You could be have diarrhea, you could
- 12:10Speaker 2: be puking, you could just feel nauseated. But people start
- 12:15Speaker 2: to not eat because of these symptoms, and then you
- 12:18Speaker 2: basically don't have the energy to continue and you just
- 12:21Speaker 2: go slowly downhill until you tap.
- 12:24Speaker 1: So people are getting the shits from the running.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Yeah, from exertion, and from you know, if you haven't
- 12:32Speaker 2: trained on what you're eating. And again, because I don't
- 12:34Speaker 2: know the other two hundred people that started it with me,
- 12:37Speaker 2: right like, I don't know what they did going into
- 12:40Speaker 2: it to train themselves. But I spent time literally eating
- 12:43Speaker 2: dinner at home, dressed up in my running clothes, have
- 12:47Speaker 2: dinner with my family, and as soon as I was
- 12:50Speaker 2: done eating and be like, okay, great, I'm out here,
- 12:52Speaker 2: I would run out the door and go out for
- 12:54Speaker 2: two or three hours just to train like running on
- 12:57Speaker 2: a full belly, hm, and like you know, like I
- 13:00Speaker 2: I knew that I was. My goal was to try
- 13:01Speaker 2: to eat somewhere around eighty to one hundred grams of
- 13:04Speaker 2: carbohydrates every hour, which most of it I took through
- 13:09Speaker 2: gels or liquid carbs, like a mixed drink kind of thing,
- 13:13Speaker 2: And so I would also train on that. But the
- 13:16Speaker 2: problem was with this distance is that it's very hard
- 13:20Speaker 2: to train on what you've at. It's hard to train
- 13:24Speaker 2: how you feel at mile sixty seventy eighty ninety because
- 13:29Speaker 2: you just don't have the time and just getting to
- 13:32Speaker 2: that point takes a lot out of a human body, right,
- 13:35Speaker 2: and so you just don't know what it's going to
- 13:38Speaker 2: be like until you're there.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Was there a mile that you thought, I don't think
- 13:43Speaker 1: I'm going to finish, And then was there a mile
- 13:46Speaker 1: at which you thought, I will do I'll do this,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'll get this.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yes, I the miles like seventy five to ninety or
- 13:56Speaker 2: by far the hardest. It was a bummer too, because
- 14:01Speaker 2: those cames like kind of like the second morning, And
- 14:03Speaker 2: a lot of people say that that second morning, like
- 14:06Speaker 2: your brain kind of has like the oh it's a
- 14:08Speaker 2: new day, even though we didn't sleep last night. It's
- 14:11Speaker 2: still a new day and we're gonna reset and we're
- 14:13Speaker 2: gonna get going. And I did not experience that, even
- 14:16Speaker 2: though I was like in my head, I'm like, ah,
- 14:17Speaker 2: at any.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Minute, like some kind of circadian rhythm like y yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 1: cause you know, like I don't do it anymore. But
- 14:23Speaker 1: Neil days when used to drive, you know, you like
- 14:26Speaker 1: go drive like a twenty two hour drive or whatever
- 14:29Speaker 1: and just do it. Yeah, you would feel like when
- 14:32Speaker 1: comes yeah, coming all a sudden, you're like you feel
- 14:33Speaker 1: like something clicks in your head and you're sort of
- 14:36Speaker 1: back in it.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You know, yeah, you can make it another eight hour.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So you were just you.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Never got no no, I mean I might have, but
- 14:42Speaker 2: it was it was short. But uh yeah, I think
- 14:47Speaker 2: had I not had my buddy Stephen Brucker with me,
- 14:49Speaker 2: who was pacing me during those miles, uh, pushing me along,
- 14:54Speaker 2: continue to be very positive, a lot of just like hey,
- 14:58Speaker 2: we're doing good, like we're moving, you're it's great, Like
- 15:01Speaker 2: you're looking good, just like constant just all of that,
- 15:05Speaker 2: and just like hey, have you drank? Have you eaten lately?
- 15:07Speaker 2: You should drink some more you should eat some more,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and just like making me eat, you know, and just
- 15:12Speaker 2: and just keeping me moving along. Like I never stopped.
- 15:15Speaker 5: I would.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I did stop to actually take a nap purposely, but
- 15:19Speaker 2: I never stopped out of pure just like exhaustion, being
- 15:22Speaker 2: like I can't move any far and I can't go
- 15:25Speaker 2: any farther.
- 15:27Speaker 3: How long was your nap?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Eight minutes?
- 15:32Speaker 2: Immediately, oh hard. I remember like laying down and being like,
- 15:35Speaker 2: he's not gonna let you sleep longer than eight, so
- 15:37Speaker 2: you better fall asleep quickly. And I was almost starting
- 15:39Speaker 2: to stress about not being able to fall asleep, and
- 15:41Speaker 2: then all of a sudden he's like, hey, get up,
- 15:43Speaker 2: you know, And so I appreciated that my buddy Stephen.
- 15:45Speaker 1: That was with me. So he just washed you sleep,
- 15:49Speaker 1: oh yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 2: With a big smile on his face. But what was
- 15:53Speaker 2: funny is at the edit, like a trail at.
- 15:55Speaker 1: A buddies and they're gonna do blank mile to blank.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:59Speaker 2: So mostly in the United States you can't pick up
- 16:02Speaker 2: a pacer until roughly halfway, so you got to do
- 16:05Speaker 2: fifty miles on your own and then you can start
- 16:07Speaker 2: picking up pacers. In Europe there's like no pacers. It's
- 16:13Speaker 2: like not.
- 16:13Speaker 5: A part of it.
- 16:14Speaker 2: They're like the only thing they do harder in.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Europe than America, jummy, because they basically like have given up.
- 16:22Speaker 1: We still got just Western Europe as a continent is
- 16:28Speaker 1: kind of in its retirement. Okay, I know they're kind
- 16:32Speaker 1: of kicking it. You don't think so, no, forty, I
- 16:35Speaker 1: mean they're kind of wrapped it up. They kind of
- 16:37Speaker 1: wrapped it up. My friends just got back from Spain.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You told me all about it. They mostly people kick it.
- 16:43Speaker 1: He goes as far as my experience in Spain was
- 16:46Speaker 1: like people chill, they chill, they eat stuff. Not a
- 16:48Speaker 1: lot goes on that is Harrison told me.
- 16:52Speaker 3: That is a I mean, no offense to Harrison, but
- 16:57Speaker 3: the observations of a eighteen year old.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah, got did gospel.
- 17:04Speaker 3: And you're going to talk about Western Europe as a whole.
- 17:08Speaker 3: What was the furthest you ran prior to this?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Fifty five miles so this.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Was like you were going to be like double pretty much.
- 17:18Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah. The interesting thing was is that the body felt fine.
- 17:24Speaker 2: It really did. I felt durable, I felt good. But
- 17:27Speaker 2: at some point at those miles, I was just talking
- 17:29Speaker 2: about like the fuel tank. It just seemed to go empty,
- 17:34Speaker 2: and even though I was like trying to eat, trying
- 17:36Speaker 2: to drink and felt like I was getting stuff in,
- 17:38Speaker 2: I just couldn't refill it. And the nausea was just
- 17:41Speaker 2: like kind of constant.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Did you grow up?
- 17:44Speaker 2: Never threw up? Throw up?
- 17:46Speaker 5: Through up.
- 17:47Speaker 2: There was a one time where I stepped off to
- 17:50Speaker 2: the side of the trail thinking like, oh, it might
- 17:51Speaker 2: be coming, and then I was fine and it didn't come.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Did it stay fun or did you get lost in
- 17:57Speaker 1: this idea that it would never end? No?
- 18:00Speaker 2: Oh, I got you start to get worried of like,
- 18:02Speaker 2: oh am I going to finish because this race has
- 18:04Speaker 2: a pretty strict cutoff of thirty six hours, which is
- 18:07Speaker 2: pretty short for one hundred miles, like a lot of
- 18:09Speaker 2: races have more like a thirty eight or even a
- 18:11Speaker 2: forty hour cut off. And at one point Steven says
- 18:14Speaker 2: to me, He's like, hey, we're like not in a
- 18:17Speaker 2: hurry yet, but like we don't want to make it interesting,
- 18:21Speaker 2: meaning like let's not f around because let's like let's
- 18:24Speaker 2: get this.
- 18:25Speaker 7: It'd be such a just a bummer if you were
- 18:28Speaker 7: at ninety miles and they're like.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Oh, just waste your whole day, like a wasted two days. Yeah, well,
- 18:34Speaker 2: you can't look at it that way. It's not it's
- 18:37Speaker 2: not a waste. I mean, you've still accomplished something by
- 18:40Speaker 2: moving that far. You just don't get the belt buckle.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But some guy a couple of years ago literally finished
- 18:45Speaker 2: like thirty six hours and like fifteen seconds and they
- 18:48Speaker 2: didn't give him the finisher's buckle.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I know it's a thing. It's been discussed, but I'm
- 18:57Speaker 1: saying no. When I out all the stands. If I
- 18:59Speaker 1: was that guy would and people go like, hey, I
- 19:02Speaker 1: heard you ran that hundred mile race, make sure I did.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Did you finish, I'd be like, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Kind of like shooting one hundred ninety nine inch mule deer.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I just can't believe that you. I can't believe that
- 19:19Speaker 3: you did that. I can't believe that people do that.
- 19:21Speaker 3: That is a crazy distance to run.
- 19:24Speaker 2: It is it is now you we trailed. Every time
- 19:28Speaker 2: I say is, I have a hard time spitting those
- 19:30Speaker 2: two words out of my mouth. But we cleared trail
- 19:33Speaker 2: a couple of weeks earlier with a fella that had
- 19:36Speaker 2: done it twice already and did it a third time,
- 19:39Speaker 2: the same when I did it two three weeks ago.
- 19:42Speaker 2: And he's a middle to back of the pack finisher,
- 19:47Speaker 2: but he's finished it every year but comes in like
- 19:50Speaker 2: he was showing me pictures of like his ankles and
- 19:52Speaker 2: his feet the first two years. I'm like, oh my god,
- 19:54Speaker 2: I don't have to experience that. I mean just like
- 19:57Speaker 2: swollen in like sausage toe. Really yeah, like pretty beat up.
- 20:01Speaker 3: How do you know you're not like totally damaging your body.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Ah, you don't. I don't. I think the most people,
- 20:10Speaker 2: their brain won't let them get to that point. There's
- 20:14Speaker 2: few people, like we're talking about this with learning how
- 20:17Speaker 2: to hold your breath right when we with with and
- 20:19Speaker 2: Jake was telling us about how the only people that
- 20:22Speaker 2: will actually take themselves to passing out in the pool
- 20:25Speaker 2: are the navy seals, those kind of people that have
- 20:28Speaker 2: that mindset that they're like, oh, you're gonna tell me
- 20:31Speaker 2: I can't pass out, watch me, and they'll go down
- 20:34Speaker 2: there and hold their breath until literally they pass out, right.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And I think that there's a small subset of people
- 20:40Speaker 2: that will be like, oh, I'm just gonna keep running
- 20:43Speaker 2: until someone else tells me to stop. But most people's
- 20:46Speaker 2: brain is you're going to tap out.
- 20:48Speaker 3: But I think that's that's the most confusing thing for
- 20:51Speaker 3: me about a race like that is if all running
- 20:55Speaker 3: running for me is like misery, so it's all mental
- 20:59Speaker 3: effort and say like I can do this mind over
- 21:03Speaker 3: matter whatever, Like where's the line between mind over matter?
- 21:07Speaker 3: And like you need to listen to your body because
- 21:09Speaker 3: it's telling you like you're on the edge.
- 21:12Speaker 2: It's tricky because you know, as tough as it was
- 21:16Speaker 2: for me, the recovery was extremely easy, and so I
- 21:21Speaker 2: feel like, oh, I maybe could have hit it a
- 21:23Speaker 2: little harder because some people do talk about recovering for
- 21:26Speaker 2: months and not thinking about doing something like that again
- 21:29Speaker 2: for six months, where right now I feel like I could.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'd want to talk to maybe some professionals, but I
- 21:36Speaker 2: feel like I could go tomorrow and knock out another one.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Do you think you could ever do them?
- 21:41Speaker 1: Now?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Everybody could?
- 21:44Speaker 5: Well?
- 21:45Speaker 1: Okay, I'm sure, yes, I think that if I dedicated
- 21:50Speaker 1: myself to it and did all the training, I think
- 21:54Speaker 1: that based on that I can walk long distances good,
- 22:01Speaker 1: I'm sure that I could get there, like and I
- 22:03Speaker 1: would have the you know, like when I set my
- 22:05Speaker 1: mind to something I'm gonna do it.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd have the mental fordage.
- 22:10Speaker 1: But I would never commit myself like I would never
- 22:16Speaker 1: deprioritize the stuff I'm already trying to do in order
- 22:20Speaker 1: to make room to properly dedicate myself to doing something
- 22:24Speaker 1: like that. And I would never do it half assed,
- 22:32Speaker 1: you know what I mean. It'd be like it'd be like,
- 22:33Speaker 1: if I was gonna do it, i'd have to just
- 22:34Speaker 1: do it. And if I was gonna but I'm not
- 22:37Speaker 1: gonna quit doing all the stuff I think about in
- 22:39Speaker 1: order to accommodate that, because for a while, that's all
- 22:41Speaker 1: he that's all he had room to think about.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Is that true?
- 22:45Speaker 1: Like free time?
- 22:46Speaker 2: I mean, you definitely spend a lot of time running
- 22:49Speaker 2: in preparation.
- 22:50Speaker 1: But eat dinner and then go run for two three hours?
- 22:53Speaker 1: Was that dinner and I go fidle around my garage
- 22:55Speaker 1: for men?
- 22:56Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 22:56Speaker 3: But was that like a good thing? Were you like
- 22:58Speaker 3: stoked to be doing that?
- 22:59Speaker 5: Oh?
- 22:59Speaker 2: Yeah? I enjoyed the process.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 23:02Speaker 5: Sure? Did you keep track of your training miles? Like
- 23:04Speaker 5: how many miles?
- 23:05Speaker 3: You know?
- 23:05Speaker 2: I have an app that the coach and I, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 2: work through together, and it you know, mostly I run
- 23:11Speaker 2: with the watch on and so yeah, but I can't
- 23:14Speaker 2: tell you off the top of my head how many
- 23:15Speaker 2: miles I ran in preparation.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Gotcha tell me about the minute you knew you were
- 23:18Speaker 1: going to make it.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Well, so I went through miles seventy five to ninety
- 23:22Speaker 2: and I haven't unfortunately, prior to this recording, I haven't
- 23:26Speaker 2: had a chance to have a good sit down with
- 23:29Speaker 2: Steven to be like, okay, tell me what you saw
- 23:31Speaker 2: from the outside, like he in short, he's been like,
- 23:35Speaker 2: I think you did really good. I think you pushed it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: You didn't you weren't like being a little baby out
- 23:40Speaker 2: there and whatever. But it was tough, and like I said,
- 23:45Speaker 2: I went through a place of just being like, man like,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I'm like losing time and people start passing you, and
- 23:51Speaker 2: you're just like, why can't I run? Why can't I run?
- 23:54Speaker 2: But we finally roll into roughly mile ninety ninety two.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I think where Mark Kanyon was going to start me.
- 24:01Speaker 2: And what does he get the closer?
- 24:03Speaker 5: Huh?
- 24:03Speaker 1: He got the closer? Well, there was two short.
- 24:11Speaker 2: You could have. They basically there's kind of a bunch
- 24:13Speaker 2: of rules, like you can't have more than one pac
- 24:15Speaker 2: or prior to that, but that last section, what do they.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Feel, what do they feel? What's the difference? Is just
- 24:21Speaker 1: trying to police the area, and.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a little bit of that, Like it's all
- 24:25Speaker 2: under four service permits, right, so they have to watch
- 24:28Speaker 2: how many people are kind of using the for service
- 24:31Speaker 2: during the race and all that. But yeah, I don't
- 24:34Speaker 2: know exactly why, but yeah, it's probably a lot of
- 24:37Speaker 2: it is just to keep the numbers of people down.
- 24:39Speaker 2: But anyways, we roll in there and it's whatever. I've
- 24:42Speaker 2: got eight miles to go and it's probably one one
- 24:48Speaker 2: in the afternoon. Just send you roll in where into
- 24:51Speaker 2: the into the last aid station. It's called hunting camp
- 24:54Speaker 2: and then it is a legit hunting camp and an
- 24:56Speaker 2: outfit uses but it's set up as an aid station
- 24:59Speaker 2: so you basically come out of the mountains finally. And
- 25:02Speaker 2: the last eight miles is on a dirt road that's
- 25:06Speaker 2: ever so slightly going downhill. You hit pavement and there's
- 25:08Speaker 2: this little micro climb that I'm sure for some people
- 25:12Speaker 2: seem like a lot, but it's like one hundred yards
- 25:14Speaker 2: and it just barely climbs, and then you pull off
- 25:16Speaker 2: the pavement onto another ranch and you've got I don't
- 25:19Speaker 2: know three hundred yards to the finish line.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Oh sorry, we had a little mishap. The generator ran
- 25:26Speaker 1: out of gas. So if there's a rough edit, that's
- 25:30Speaker 1: what happened. Trying to remember where we were, Uh.
- 25:33Speaker 5: He was.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Station. Yeah, yeah, don't be asking me no questions.
- 25:40Speaker 8: Well, what you got to explain that?
- 25:42Speaker 7: Like why he got to finish white tail hunting questions
- 25:45Speaker 7: or like how you feeling?
- 25:46Speaker 2: Questions any because I don't want to talk because you're
- 25:50Speaker 2: out of like at that point, the human runner is
- 25:54Speaker 2: out of energy to waste any energy, so you wanted
- 25:57Speaker 2: him to talk at you. But yeah, entertained my brain
- 26:02Speaker 2: and uh. He was actually really surprised how much I retained.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Later he was like quizzing me about what I what
- 26:08Speaker 2: we had talked about.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, yeah, what was he telling you about?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Well, you know, Mark, he says you're a bookworm. So
- 26:12Speaker 2: he gave me like three book reports, and then he
- 26:15Speaker 2: told me about the book that he's you know, pretty
- 26:18Speaker 2: much finished writing is at the editor now, the first
- 26:22Speaker 2: first version. But I can't remember what else. We definitely
- 26:27Speaker 2: talked about some deer, so he was just fill in
- 26:29Speaker 2: space with good use for me.
- 26:32Speaker 9: At that point in time. Are you able to like
- 26:34Speaker 9: if he said something funny, are you able to laugh?
- 26:36Speaker 5: Oh?
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well it was funny.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Is that worked to put a piece of surrand wrapped
- 26:42Speaker 1: between your butt cheeks?
- 26:44Speaker 8: I think?
- 26:46Speaker 2: But a slick thing because this is something that people
- 26:49Speaker 2: don't think about, is that if you're not ready when
- 26:53Speaker 2: you're applying it, you know, it's just your fingers and
- 26:58Speaker 2: then you're not out there exactly with a hand washing station.
- 27:01Speaker 7: Well that's what I wanted to get back to, like
- 27:03Speaker 7: the whole like uh sanitization.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Oh yeah, no, So I would come into the eighth
- 27:08Speaker 2: station and high five everybody and the I'm like, now
- 27:11Speaker 2: that we've done that, you guys all want to sanitize
- 27:14Speaker 2: your hands.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Because I've had my finger and my buttets.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Yeah, you know one of the funniest things that just
- 27:20Speaker 1: get back to the race. But we're you know that
- 27:23Speaker 1: that dental floss called Glide. I remember we were talking
- 27:28Speaker 1: about that and my brother Danny was giving it a
- 27:30Speaker 1: bad review.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yeah, because it doesn't glide.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He said it was He said it's like wiping your
- 27:35Speaker 1: ass with saran wrap, which I always thought was a
- 27:37Speaker 1: great visual. That Glide stuff like it doesn't get the
- 27:43Speaker 1: gunk out.
- 27:44Speaker 2: No.
- 27:45Speaker 3: I think it depends on how close your teeth are together.
- 27:48Speaker 2: That's true, because.
- 27:50Speaker 1: People it's a little too thick. So Mark's talking all
- 27:52Speaker 1: about these books.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he's telling me about books. What's funny is that
- 27:57Speaker 2: right there leaving you got to climb up this little hill.
- 27:59Speaker 5: I forgot.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It's a little bit of a bigger hill, and I
- 28:02Speaker 2: was just gonna walk up it. But Jennifer's like, they're
- 28:04Speaker 2: there at the AID station. But they're like, but we
- 28:06Speaker 2: made another a station at the trucks at the top
- 28:10Speaker 2: of the hill. And I when I when she says
- 28:12Speaker 2: that to me, I'm like, why did you make an
- 28:15Speaker 2: AID station, Like on top of another hill? You're gonna
- 28:18Speaker 2: ask me to at this point walk up like a
- 28:20Speaker 2: bonus hill, because to me, it sounded like, oh, we're
- 28:22Speaker 2: gonna take you off of the trail up some hill
- 28:25Speaker 2: to where the cars are, where we have this nice
- 28:27Speaker 2: AID station and then you can come back. I'm like,
- 28:29Speaker 2: I'm not going up some hill. And she's like, look
- 28:32Speaker 2: at me, like, what are you talking about? Like right
- 28:34Speaker 2: there where everybody else has to go, We're like right
- 28:37Speaker 2: off the side of the road. And then I understood. Anyways,
- 28:40Speaker 2: we get up there and two things happened. One, you're
- 28:46Speaker 2: out of the mountains, so you're off of the crazy mountains.
- 28:49Speaker 2: The trails are extremely rough, like there's a lot of
- 28:52Speaker 2: trails that they there are signs that stay like do
- 28:55Speaker 2: not take equestrian animals on these trails because they're just
- 28:59Speaker 2: so loose and on many just little rocks. And when
- 29:02Speaker 2: you're twenty miles in or even you know, thirty forty,
- 29:07Speaker 2: you're just like, dude, just kind of hopping and skipping
- 29:10Speaker 2: through them and it's no big deal. But when it
- 29:11Speaker 2: gets themhile eighty and your brain is like looking at
- 29:15Speaker 2: just this like trail full of rocks, and it's just
- 29:18Speaker 2: like your brain's like, we don't want to contend with
- 29:21Speaker 2: that anymore.
- 29:21Speaker 8: One like one bad step ends the race.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Right, well that could be too, but you're just having
- 29:26Speaker 2: to work for every step, you know. And uh, Like
- 29:29Speaker 2: it got to the point where you could see like
- 29:31Speaker 2: people were actually running in the grass, cause just like
- 29:34Speaker 2: running even through those like Bunchie grass, which no man,
- 29:37Speaker 2: everyone wants to hike and bunch grass when you could
- 29:39Speaker 2: be on a trail, but people were like purposely you
- 29:41Speaker 2: could see where they'd been running in the grass. So
- 29:43Speaker 2: you're over the rocks. And this is something I had
- 29:47Speaker 2: heard is that people say, yeah, once you get down
- 29:49Speaker 2: to that road, your body, your legs, your brain is like, oh,
- 29:53Speaker 2: you can run because you don't have to think about it.
- 29:55Speaker 2: You can just go. And so there's that. And then
- 29:59Speaker 2: Stephen also gave me a couple of tile and all,
- 30:01Speaker 2: and I'm like, telling all, I'm like, I'm not really hurting.
- 30:04Speaker 2: He's like, it'll be good, trust me. And I almost
- 30:07Speaker 2: didn't take it because I'm thinking, like, oh, I'm gonna
- 30:10Speaker 2: take these two tilenol and then the nausea and then
- 30:13Speaker 2: these two things in my stomach that I'm not really
- 30:15Speaker 2: prepared for and it's not gonna be good. And he's like, no,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I think you should take it. So we start walking
- 30:21Speaker 2: and I give him up mark my speech. I'm like,
- 30:23Speaker 2: we're gonna just like we'll run a little bit, like
- 30:26Speaker 2: we might run to that next tree and then we'll
- 30:28Speaker 2: walk and then we'll run and we'll just kind of
- 30:30Speaker 2: feel it out and see how it goes well. We
- 30:32Speaker 2: start running and I'm like, uh, this feels pretty good.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And then my buddy Cooper comes by and he's jamming
- 30:39Speaker 2: some wu tang in the truck like super loud, and
- 30:41Speaker 2: I kind of get that and a little head bob
- 30:43Speaker 2: going and I'm like, oh okay, and we start clipping
- 30:47Speaker 2: and we've been passed by two groups, but they're like
- 30:49Speaker 2: maybe three four hundred yards out ahead of me. And
- 30:52Speaker 2: all of a sudden, I'm like, Mark, we're gonna take
- 30:54Speaker 2: them down. And when we go buy him, we're not
- 30:56Speaker 2: stopping and we're just gonna keep going. And the next
- 30:58Speaker 2: thing I know, we knocked out those eight miles in
- 31:00Speaker 2: like I don't know, it felt like ninety minutes or less,
- 31:04Speaker 2: like we zoomed and like I felt great, Like by
- 31:08Speaker 2: the time everybody caught up to me that was racing
- 31:10Speaker 2: up basically passing us to get to the finish line
- 31:12Speaker 2: to be there, like they're like looking at us like whoa, yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 2: let's go, because we were like actually running. We almost
- 31:20Speaker 2: caught another group. We bumped them. It's the funny thing
- 31:23Speaker 2: that Steven says, just like how you bump animals sometimes
- 31:25Speaker 2: and then they.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Start to see you coming.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, well we bumped these this pack of three
- 31:30Speaker 2: pack of girls, and I was closing in good, like
- 31:32Speaker 2: I made it to like one hundred and fifty yards
- 31:34Speaker 2: probably and then all because they were doing the same
- 31:37Speaker 2: thing that I had. They were like, we're gonna run
- 31:39Speaker 2: and then walk, run and then walk, and we're to
- 31:41Speaker 2: take that all the way to the finish. But once
- 31:43Speaker 2: I bumped them, they went running all all the way.
- 31:48Speaker 3: And so that was like a combo of the Wu tang,
- 31:50Speaker 3: the til.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And all and the road.
- 31:53Speaker 7: Did you feel the talent all hit your system or
- 31:56Speaker 7: you just felt you just.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Felt you know, I sure wish I would have taken
- 32:02Speaker 2: the tile and all like a mile eighty I guarantee
- 32:06Speaker 2: you I will have some with me. Yeah, next time
- 32:09Speaker 2: I would get to eighty mile.
- 32:10Speaker 3: That is the anti inflammatory one, right, A state of
- 32:13Speaker 3: menifin is anti inflammatory. Yeah, so I'm sure it just
- 32:17Speaker 3: like maybe calmed your body down with it. Huh.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Could be a lot of different a lot of different things. Again,
- 32:22Speaker 2: when your body's at that point, you don't know how
- 32:25Speaker 2: that stuff's affecting, right, So.
- 32:26Speaker 1: This is this is something you're gonna start doing.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Uh, maybe you know that if there was no kids
- 32:33Speaker 2: at home, it was just Jennifer and I, Yeah, I'd
- 32:35Speaker 2: probably do a whole bunch.
- 32:37Speaker 1: But it takes a bunch.
- 32:38Speaker 2: It takes time, yeah, because the thing that even like
- 32:41Speaker 2: within the maybe the first day after, probably on Sunday,
- 32:46Speaker 2: I didn't do too much time rethinking about the race
- 32:48Speaker 2: because you're just kind of in this euphoric state where
- 32:50Speaker 2: you're like, yeah, I'm a little beat up, and I'm
- 32:52Speaker 2: definitely fatigued and tired. And I had what I described
- 32:55Speaker 2: as a very lounge lizard day where I would sort
- 32:58Speaker 2: of like go from bed into the kitchen like eat
- 33:01Speaker 2: as much as I could possibly could until I kind
- 33:03Speaker 2: of lost energy, and then I would sort of like
- 33:05Speaker 2: slump down and I would either make it to just
- 33:08Speaker 2: the carpet or maybe I would make it to the
- 33:09Speaker 2: couch or back to the bed. And I just did
- 33:12Speaker 2: that rotation all day long. You know, obviously there's like
- 33:14Speaker 2: a bathroom break in there too, but like you're not
- 33:17Speaker 2: going anywhere. I forced myself to walk to the barn
- 33:19Speaker 2: and back one time, just like move my legs. But
- 33:23Speaker 2: by the next day you're like, oh, how could I
- 33:26Speaker 2: have done it better? Where did I mess up? What
- 33:30Speaker 2: were my mistakes?
- 33:31Speaker 5: Was it?
- 33:31Speaker 2: Could I have taken talent a mile seventy? Could I
- 33:35Speaker 2: have done more coke? Could I have just pushed a
- 33:37Speaker 2: little bit harder. Was I being a little baby? There?
- 33:39Speaker 2: I have done it?
- 33:40Speaker 3: Did you just say? Could I have done more coke?
- 33:42Speaker 2: I drank more coke?
- 33:48Speaker 1: You'll set a lot like coming off a five six
- 33:51Speaker 1: hour hall of It jig. Yeah, you know the outstairs
- 33:55Speaker 1: Like I've been there, you're out there. I mean you
- 33:58Speaker 1: just trying to get through. Yeah, six hours jig.
- 34:01Speaker 5: It's tough.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Sometimes, Well it's amazing.
- 34:03Speaker 1: How at night you're like, how could we have done better?
- 34:06Speaker 2: Yeah? How Like I'm like, if Stephen wasn't here, I
- 34:11Speaker 2: would just d n F right now, you know, Like
- 34:13Speaker 2: I had thoughts like that come through. I did not
- 34:16Speaker 2: finish when you just pull yourself out, but like I
- 34:18Speaker 2: don't dig you to quit. Well, that again, that's because
- 34:22Speaker 2: that's something that I wanted too much into it. That's
- 34:24Speaker 2: something that I would like to explore. I don't know
- 34:26Speaker 2: if it'll be the next one I do, but I
- 34:28Speaker 2: will know I would definitely I will definitely do one solo. Oh,
- 34:32Speaker 2: because I think it's a whole different mindset.
- 34:34Speaker 3: What was the like, what was the inspiration to do
- 34:37Speaker 3: in the first place? Like when did you first say,
- 34:40Speaker 3: because it's been like a long held like desire and goal,
- 34:46Speaker 3: I'm going to run one hundred miles one day.
- 34:47Speaker 2: No, Honestly, when I moved to Bozeman, I had done
- 34:50Speaker 2: a couple of Veil trail half marathons at that point,
- 34:53Speaker 2: maybe three. It was like we had like race series
- 34:55Speaker 2: and where Brody and I lived in Veil and I
- 34:57Speaker 2: would do a couple of trail runs and all all
- 34:59Speaker 2: that stuf. I've started really just to be in shape
- 35:01Speaker 2: for September so I could feel like I could go
- 35:03Speaker 2: uphill and you know, get to the ridge before the
- 35:06Speaker 2: elk did. And then when I got to Bowls, when
- 35:09Speaker 2: I heard about this Bridger Ridge run, it's like nineteen
- 35:11Speaker 2: twenty miles, I'm like, oh, that looks like a sweet
- 35:13Speaker 2: place to do a run. So I did that. And
- 35:16Speaker 2: then Rick Smith used to always talk about the rut
- 35:19Speaker 2: and he and I would like look at it online
- 35:21Speaker 2: and be like that's insane. And then someone's like, oh, no,
- 35:24Speaker 2: you could do it. I'm like, oh, maybe I could.
- 35:26Speaker 2: So I got a coach and they're like, oh, yeah,
- 35:28Speaker 2: well we can get you ready for that thirty one
- 35:30Speaker 2: miles in the mountains, no problem. So I did that,
- 35:33Speaker 2: and it's just like sort of every distance I've done,
- 35:35Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I wonder if I could go a
- 35:37Speaker 2: little bit farther. Going from twenty to thirty no big deal.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Thirty to fifty was really I wouldn't say that big
- 35:45Speaker 2: of a deal, very doable, but fifty to one hundred was.
- 35:49Speaker 5: It was a leap.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Wow.
- 35:51Speaker 9: So now when you look at the rut, are you like, ah,
- 35:54Speaker 9: that's that's copcakes.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, because you're gonna no matter what the distance,
- 36:01Speaker 2: what the distance is or the amount of elevation gain
- 36:04Speaker 2: the race has your brain, your body is going to
- 36:07Speaker 2: go at a certain effort level to do that race.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Like I did a I think it was a twenty
- 36:13Speaker 2: five k in Helena in the spring, and it took me,
- 36:16Speaker 2: I don't know, three hours something, and like I ran
- 36:19Speaker 2: way faster, and but I still exerted a bunch of energy.
- 36:22Speaker 2: And by the time you get done with it, you're like, oh,
- 36:24Speaker 2: you know, and you're you're done right. You need a
- 36:28Speaker 2: day off, And so I think you just you know,
- 36:31Speaker 2: you sort of just pace yourself to whatever distance it is. So, yeah,
- 36:35Speaker 2: can I finish it easily? Sure? Yeah, I could go
- 36:38Speaker 2: do the Reugh fifty k without any kind of problems.
- 36:43Speaker 2: But again, do I want to like beat my last
- 36:46Speaker 2: time that I did it? Probably?
- 36:48Speaker 3: You know, Rosie and I are doing the eleven k
- 36:51Speaker 3: right right, and that is more ks than I have
- 36:53Speaker 3: ever run in my life. I'm really nervous. Hole.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Ye you're that's like probably six and a half seven
- 37:02Speaker 2: like that.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I've never run that much in one fell swoop.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Ever.
- 37:07Speaker 2: It's going to be great, is it?
- 37:10Speaker 1: I think so?
- 37:11Speaker 3: I mean, certainly having people in my life that can
- 37:13Speaker 3: run one hundred miles and I can talk about it
- 37:16Speaker 3: and how cool it is. It's very inspiring for something
- 37:19Speaker 3: like that.
- 37:19Speaker 7: But oh yeah, it kind of like it's inspiring, but
- 37:22Speaker 7: it all so like when I'm out running, it kind
- 37:24Speaker 7: of makes me angry that is out there running one
- 37:27Speaker 7: hundred miles.
- 37:28Speaker 1: The opposite. Yeah, he does the opposite of pump you up.
- 37:32Speaker 8: Nice, Like I'm out running five miles and I'm like five.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Miles is not a short run, and you're doing that
- 37:40Speaker 3: multiple times a week, Like that's awesome.
- 37:43Speaker 7: But it's like because I'm old and I want to
- 37:46Speaker 7: keep hunting when i'm old, that's right, Yeah, it's not
- 37:49Speaker 7: because I want.
- 37:49Speaker 3: To Well you're not old, but I understand what you're
- 37:52Speaker 3: saying you're trying to keep in shape, and yeah, but.
- 37:55Speaker 2: This this guy that we clear trail with, Jimy's got
- 37:58Speaker 2: a question shake.
- 37:59Speaker 4: No, just saying you gotta start running.
- 38:01Speaker 2: He he he said it right, and like it's stuck
- 38:06Speaker 2: with me in a time. But in miles seventy five
- 38:08Speaker 2: or eighty, it really rang true where he's like, yeah,
- 38:11Speaker 2: the first fifty, he's like, it's kind of fun. He's like,
- 38:14Speaker 2: the second fifty you find out what you're made out of.
- 38:17Speaker 2: And it's like, you can't really say it any better
- 38:20Speaker 2: than that, because that second fifty, it's like the first
- 38:23Speaker 2: fifties just kind of like the price of admission to
- 38:26Speaker 2: get to see what's going to happen in the second fifty,
- 38:28Speaker 2: you know, because you can't. You're not gonna know one
- 38:31Speaker 2: without the other.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, like I'm just here to see what
- 38:34Speaker 1: happens later.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Yeah you are. You're like sceneries great, Like we're in
- 38:38Speaker 2: the mountains.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I know, I got this one. I got the first fifty.
- 38:42Speaker 2: It's a beautiful long day in the mountains. I had
- 38:44Speaker 2: this crazy guy run up to me like I hadn't
- 38:47Speaker 2: been done, I had crossed the finish line, hugged everybody
- 38:50Speaker 2: that was there helping me and the other friends that
- 38:53Speaker 2: had ran it. This other guy, Stephen Graham, who I
- 38:57Speaker 2: kind of know a run into him a few times
- 39:00Speaker 2: on the trails round Bowman. He runs up to me
- 39:02Speaker 2: and he's like, what did you think about that crazy
- 39:04Speaker 2: ridge around Honey Trail? When I'm up there, I just
- 39:06Speaker 2: feel like I'm following a wounded bull elk And I'm
- 39:09Speaker 2: just like, what, dude, what are you talking about? And
- 39:12Speaker 2: then he's like, yeah, you know, you're just on that
- 39:15Speaker 2: like kind of slopey rolling hill and there's really no
- 39:18Speaker 2: trail and it kind of just keeps going and going
- 39:20Speaker 2: and going. And I'm like, oh, yeah, I kind of
- 39:23Speaker 2: see what you're saying. Like like he just like that's
- 39:27Speaker 2: what is in his mind because it's not a great trail.
- 39:30Speaker 2: There's just these flags like on this like bunch grass hillside,
- 39:33Speaker 2: and it's just like this kind of like you're like,
- 39:35Speaker 2: why is the trail here? So it's like a like
- 39:38Speaker 2: a like a trail wounded bull elk would take where
- 39:40Speaker 2: you're just like there's no rhyme or reason. He's just
- 39:42Speaker 2: sort of like traveling here. And but that guy had
- 39:46Speaker 2: way too much energy. Well I'll leave it with this.
- 39:49Speaker 2: It's amazing how at like ninety you're like, I'm gonna
- 39:52Speaker 2: die up here. Yeah, you know, I might lay down
- 39:55Speaker 2: and the crows will just pick my eyes out. And
- 39:58Speaker 2: then you get done and you give a you hogs
- 40:00Speaker 2: around and everybody's like, sit down, what can we get
- 40:03Speaker 2: for you? And all of a sudden you're like, oh no,
- 40:05Speaker 2: I feel pretty good now that that's behind me. Like
- 40:08Speaker 2: I'm cool to hang out and like let's watch everybody
- 40:11Speaker 2: else finish and clap and and like all a sudden,
- 40:14Speaker 2: your brain is just like, oh, that's behind us, so
- 40:17Speaker 2: you can like enjoy yourself again.
- 40:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:19Speaker 3: Man, that's so cool that you did that. I just
- 40:24Speaker 3: I can't even. It's like very hard to imagine running.
- 40:28Speaker 1: This giant candy sack. Come when the generator went down?
- 40:31Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just appeared.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it would you like it to go away?
- 40:36Speaker 1: Oh, it's just like a little bit of continuity'd be appreciated.
- 40:39Speaker 1: I mean, Phil, no amount of magical Phil. If Phil
- 40:44Speaker 1: cleaned up, sorry Phil, Phil clean it feels like no problem,
- 40:48Speaker 1: I got the whole thing cleaned up. It'd be like,
- 40:50Speaker 1: all of a sudden, And it's also be like.
- 40:53Speaker 2: I was trying to address it when we when we
- 40:57Speaker 2: started recording again, and I was saying that we're kind
- 40:59Speaker 2: of like some long distance runners that basically at some
- 41:03Speaker 2: point you just turned to eating a lot of sugar.
- 41:05Speaker 1: So hopefully Phil, no, well he'll know there's no point
- 41:09Speaker 1: in trying to clean up the edit.
- 41:10Speaker 5: Nope, don't do it.
- 41:11Speaker 1: Phil.
- 41:12Speaker 4: Can we combine these bags or do you want to
- 41:14Speaker 4: just keep.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Separate candy management here? Yeah, it's like a Halloween.
- 41:19Speaker 4: I should bring us home and give it.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Congratulations? Man, thanks?
- 41:22Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks?
- 41:23Speaker 1: Oh I thought that was cool. Speaking of doing crazy,
- 41:27Speaker 1: it's a cool it's a good feat. It's like a
- 41:29Speaker 1: you know, it was a real accomplishment.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Man, it is no. No, I I one hundred percent
- 41:34Speaker 2: feel that way. I'm very My goal was number. First
- 41:37Speaker 2: goal was to finish, and I always say finished the
- 41:39Speaker 2: smile on my face, which I did. Second goal was
- 41:42Speaker 2: to go thirty hours. I did it thirty three. It
- 41:46Speaker 2: was a lofty goal. I said. I think I could
- 41:49Speaker 2: go back now with experience probably pull that off. But uh, yeah,
- 41:54Speaker 2: I'm very happy. It's It's like there was at times
- 41:57Speaker 2: I'm like, eh, did I do it? Did I do
- 41:59Speaker 2: it well enough? And multiple people have reached out and
- 42:02Speaker 2: been like, look, dude, that's like one of the hardest
- 42:05Speaker 2: ones in the country. It's a lot of elevation, like
- 42:08Speaker 2: those trails I was talking about earlier where the footing
- 42:11Speaker 2: just stinks for mile after mile after a mile after
- 42:14Speaker 2: a mile, and so they're like, look as your first attempt,
- 42:18Speaker 2: your debut, one hundred, great job, you know, so I'm pumped.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I got my belt buckle.
- 42:26Speaker 5: I've been.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Right now.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Do you get a belt buckle for like everyone.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Or every hundred? It's like whatever. I don't know where
- 42:35Speaker 2: it came from. I should look that up. But it's
- 42:37Speaker 2: like a thing.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Like they stole like Rodeos groove. Yeah, that's not very nice.
- 42:42Speaker 1: I want to their own thing, like a headband.
- 42:44Speaker 9: So you gonna you gotta start dressing like a little
- 42:46Speaker 9: western just so you can show off.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Yeah, why not just give me like a like a headband.
- 42:50Speaker 7: You should be giving out like halibut belt buckles up here.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That'd be a sweet belt box. Actually, I don't wear
- 42:58Speaker 1: any kind of but I wear a belt. My belt
- 43:00Speaker 1: has no metal on it.
- 43:01Speaker 8: I've never owned a belt.
- 43:02Speaker 1: I wear all it's all fabric bell crow belt.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I used to rock a.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Belt buckle back in the day, you don't anymore.
- 43:10Speaker 2: You had that fancy belt doesn't keep your fly closed.
- 43:13Speaker 1: No, I never sit that up. You know what. Well,
- 43:16Speaker 1: when I'm wearing my bibs. When I'm wearing my bibs,
- 43:18Speaker 1: I can wear my bibs all day. I leave that down.
- 43:20Speaker 1: So I got coverage elsewhere totally.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I was actually running that program today too. But
- 43:29Speaker 2: speaking of doing kind of hard crazy stuff, we really
- 43:32Speaker 2: haven't gotten to sit down and chat about Africa at all.
- 43:35Speaker 1: No, you and I have nothing. I've been chatting about
- 43:37Speaker 1: it a lot. Yeah, but I wouldn't call it like
- 43:40Speaker 1: it's not it's not it's yeah, I wouldn't say hard
- 43:43Speaker 1: and crazy.
- 43:45Speaker 2: I mean, but like you, we were just talking when
- 43:47Speaker 2: we weren't recording about how another American has been.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Killed two guys this year.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Two guys have keep being killed this year hunting Black Death.
- 43:56Speaker 1: I didn't know that till uh that's the name. That's
- 43:57Speaker 1: the nickname for the KPE Buffalo Black.
- 43:59Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I knew it.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Yeah, two yeah, two Americans killed. The guy just got killed. Now,
- 44:03Speaker 1: so we're just debating, like how bad do you feel?
- 44:06Speaker 1: Like it's too bad? But part of the allure is
- 44:11Speaker 1: it you're hunting a thing that gets you. That's what's
- 44:14Speaker 1: so that's what like, it's so enticing about it, so,
- 44:17Speaker 1: you know.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Because otherwise it's kind of like you're hunting a cow.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Yeah. And I had friends that pushed it too long
- 44:23Speaker 1: and mountaineering and they anywhere that was going.
- 44:27Speaker 7: But it's part of that animal is part of the
- 44:29Speaker 7: Big Five and all, like the reason they're called Big
- 44:32Speaker 7: five is because they're all dangerous.
- 44:35Speaker 1: You know what I didn't you know, I didn't know
- 44:36Speaker 1: you know when people say planes game, Yeah, I was like, well,
- 44:41Speaker 1: what's not planes game? The only thing not planes game
- 44:45Speaker 1: is dangerous game. I thought there was like like another category,
- 44:50Speaker 1: it's dangerous game planes game?
- 44:52Speaker 4: What about like waterfowl?
- 44:55Speaker 1: Is that just oh no, no in Africa hunting, well don't
- 44:58Speaker 1: they have Yeah, that would be just a whole different
- 45:00Speaker 1: cat on. But people say like planes game and you're like, okay,
- 45:04Speaker 1: what is not that? And what's not that is dangerous game? Yeah?
- 45:11Speaker 1: It's like it's like being around uh like in the end,
- 45:16Speaker 1: we had like nothing happened, you know, I mean we
- 45:18Speaker 1: killed the bull and watched it kill the bull wash.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's what I want to know about is
- 45:23Speaker 2: in that particular hunt, like when it finally went down,
- 45:29Speaker 2: were you scared?
- 45:30Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 45:31Speaker 5: Never I was.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I wasn't. There was points where you're like, oh, I
- 45:37Speaker 1: see how this goes. You know, like you're in eight
- 45:41Speaker 1: foot high grass and they're right in front of you.
- 45:45Speaker 1: You can see the grass moving, you can hear and
- 45:47Speaker 1: see the birds, the oxpeckers that are on them all
- 45:49Speaker 1: the time. You can hear the oxpeckers and you see
- 45:52Speaker 1: them flitting around and they're just twenty yards. You know,
- 45:57Speaker 1: You're like, there's a two thousand pound thing twenty yards.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It has a reputation, right, But all they do is
- 46:03Speaker 1: they just want to They don't like, you know, they
- 46:04Speaker 1: smell you gone, but you're so you're aware. And then
- 46:08Speaker 1: we're at a spot where they're like, oh, yeah, this
- 46:09Speaker 1: is where Roger got you know, we went to the
- 46:11Speaker 1: spot and they're like, oh yeah, right here, this is
- 46:13Speaker 1: where Roger got. This is where Roger got plastered, and
- 46:16Speaker 1: he got it like a.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Grizzly bear that ninety nine out of one hundred times
- 46:19Speaker 2: it smells you and runs and then but one percent
- 46:21Speaker 2: at a time it just is like, oh, I'm pissed
- 46:23Speaker 2: and I'm coming in after.
- 46:24Speaker 5: You, I said, a lot of time, it's when they're wounded.
- 46:26Speaker 1: It really is, like, that's what was unusual that there's
- 46:30Speaker 1: a guy from Texas just got killed and in the
- 46:33Speaker 1: article and the reporting for the articles pointed out was unwounded.
- 46:38Speaker 1: So these guys Morgan knows gout like the trackers. It's
- 46:48Speaker 1: it's just they're worried about the wounded ones. But what
- 46:50Speaker 1: was pointed out to me, it's interesting. It doesn't mean
- 46:52Speaker 1: it was wounded by you. This guy Roger got plastered
- 46:56Speaker 1: by one that had been wounded by a lion, right,
- 47:00Speaker 1: So it's or they get wounded by someone else yor
- 47:03Speaker 1: wounded for some other reason. And so there's just there's
- 47:06Speaker 1: a chance that out there are wounded ones. And so
- 47:09Speaker 1: there's also that you hit one, and then you got
- 47:11Speaker 1: to trail your wounded one. Yeah, and when you hit them,
- 47:14Speaker 1: they go into the thickest shit they can find, right,
- 47:17Speaker 1: and then you gotta go in. It's either on a
- 47:18Speaker 1: rot or you're gonna go in there and find them
- 47:20Speaker 1: and that's nerve racking. Or there's always a chance that
- 47:23Speaker 1: you're on one and he's something else wounded him. But
- 47:28Speaker 1: the trackers are paying a lot of attention to how
- 47:31Speaker 1: it behaves. That's just through conversation. They're when they're tracking,
- 47:37Speaker 1: they're watching like it's something wrong with it. If they
- 47:41Speaker 1: if they're on one it's dragging its foot, funny, not
- 47:45Speaker 1: doing the right things in the right places, suggesting that
- 47:48Speaker 1: he's got a problem. Then they'll be like, heads up,
- 47:52Speaker 1: we're following one that something's wrong.
- 47:54Speaker 2: With So how did yours go down? Have you already
- 47:56Speaker 2: explained this in a different podcast?
- 47:58Speaker 1: No, how did you know? We talked about a little bit.
- 48:02Speaker 1: We we got on a group and tracked a group
- 48:08Speaker 1: for a few hours, lost him, got back, got in
- 48:13Speaker 1: a truck, went down the road a little ways and
- 48:15Speaker 1: saw a bull, just caught a glimpse of a bull
- 48:20Speaker 1: moving along. Got out and went down the road paralleling
- 48:26Speaker 1: him and kept well. First we went off, tried to
- 48:28Speaker 1: find him, parallettle while, looked for him, look for him,
- 48:31Speaker 1: looked for him, couldn't find him. Then we stopped. We're
- 48:34Speaker 1: doing that little thing like like we lost him, you know,
- 48:38Speaker 1: standing there. Uh, it was very late in the day.
- 48:43Speaker 1: They they cut where we ducked in at one point
- 48:47Speaker 1: and cut a track and saw that he'd already come through.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Like we're like, we're like, we know he's going along
- 48:52Speaker 1: in a line. So we kind of paralleled along seventy
- 48:55Speaker 1: five yards off and at one point cut over to
- 48:58Speaker 1: intersect his line to see like had he been through
- 49:01Speaker 1: or not yet, and realized, oh, he'd already passed through.
- 49:05Speaker 1: So now we kind of went and cut thinking we
- 49:08Speaker 1: were going to maybe be in front of him, but
- 49:12Speaker 1: they hit the track and like, no, he's already been
- 49:13Speaker 1: through here, so he backed out paralleled more and then
- 49:18Speaker 1: just nothing was like seeing nothing, hear nothing. And then
- 49:22Speaker 1: we're doing that little stand around thing you do, like
- 49:24Speaker 1: when you kind of are regrouping, and all sudden heard
- 49:30Speaker 1: like a twig and everybody also like like well the
- 49:36Speaker 1: twig went snap, and everybody did that like like I
- 49:40Speaker 1: just heard something, and and all of a sudden, like
- 49:42Speaker 1: everybody stared in the same spot, and all of a sudden,
- 49:46Speaker 1: there it's just like there's like he's out, and also
- 49:48Speaker 1: there's his head peering how far down through the seventy
- 49:51Speaker 1: five yards his head peering down, and and that you
- 49:57Speaker 1: could see him playing his day, and at that he
- 50:00Speaker 1: kind of turned a little bit. Morgan's like see the
- 50:04Speaker 1: see his chin go eight inches down and four or
- 50:08Speaker 1: five inches over from his chin and hit him right there.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Because you get like you can't so you shot him
- 50:16Speaker 2: quording to well, I didn't do what he said.
- 50:19Speaker 1: I was a little off, but it was like, all's well,
- 50:21Speaker 1: that ends well because it was high but just went
- 50:24Speaker 1: right into his chest cavity, so it kind of almost
- 50:27Speaker 1: went in like he's looking at you with his head down.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Imagine that he's down like this. Imagine it entered kind
- 50:33Speaker 1: of in your where your cheek meets your neck, but
- 50:37Speaker 1: just you know, yeah, then I shot it that I
- 50:40Speaker 1: then I tried to hit him two more times when
- 50:42Speaker 1: he ram but missed him. For the trackers that were
- 50:44Speaker 1: the skinners, they never found anything. I shot at him
- 50:47Speaker 1: two more times as he ran, but I don't think
- 50:48Speaker 1: I connected on him, but the one was fatal.
- 50:53Speaker 7: And the whole time you're following and tracking them, the
- 50:55Speaker 7: most important thing is wind.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Or yeah, but you like we did too long. We
- 51:03Speaker 1: did two like long, like real active tracks following one
- 51:11Speaker 1: like you get on them and you're hoping to you're
- 51:17Speaker 1: tracking and the trackers know the behavior so well. But
- 51:20Speaker 1: it may be kind of very similar like picture you
- 51:22Speaker 1: found the elk in the snow. You get up a
- 51:25Speaker 1: day break and he's out, like you know where he's
- 51:27Speaker 1: not gonna be, Meaning if you're up on some big
- 51:30Speaker 1: high plateau right blown off where he's feeding in the snow,
- 51:36Speaker 1: it's like, now it's nine in the morning, I know
- 51:39Speaker 1: where he's not gonna be. He's not gonna be here,
- 51:42Speaker 1: He's gonna be up in that timber hole.
- 51:46Speaker 5: Right.
- 51:46Speaker 1: So you kind of got that right, and they know
- 51:47Speaker 1: that it's different because it's more subtle, but they know
- 51:50Speaker 1: where he wants to be. So when you're going along
- 51:54Speaker 1: sometimes you're like, he doesn't want to be here. And
- 51:57Speaker 1: then you get to places where they become intensely interested.
- 52:01Speaker 1: So you'll come in and just some little thing like
- 52:03Speaker 1: like a thick timber patch and like a little depression,
- 52:07Speaker 1: and what they'll know, like what's the sun gonna do?
- 52:11Speaker 1: And how much? Because they want to be in the dark, dang,
- 52:14Speaker 1: they want to lay down in the dark. They want
- 52:17Speaker 1: to lay down where they can see out of their hole,
- 52:19Speaker 1: and they're gonna be in like tucked in. So all
- 52:21Speaker 1: of sudden, too get where they just stopped, and they
- 52:24Speaker 1: stare and stare and stare, and then they move five
- 52:27Speaker 1: feet and stare and stare and stare, and then move
- 52:29Speaker 1: over and stare and stare and stare because they're like,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I think he's in there. He's in that hole. Yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 1: And then you look at it from every angle, and
- 52:40Speaker 1: you look at it from every angle and you just
- 52:42Speaker 1: can't find them. And eventually someone slips around and like
- 52:45Speaker 1: he left, he's not in that patch, but he's still
- 52:48Speaker 1: not running.
- 52:49Speaker 2: He never ran.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Is it over?
- 52:50Speaker 8: If you bump them?
- 52:52Speaker 1: Not necessarily we bumped them and went. We bumped one twice,
- 52:56Speaker 1: so when you go, he's not there and he didn't run,
- 53:02Speaker 1: then you keep on them. So one we get to
- 53:05Speaker 1: the end. One the way it ended is all of
- 53:07Speaker 1: a sudden, I'm from I don't know, man, not not me,
- 53:12Speaker 1: to that sink. But we're like in one of those patches,
- 53:18Speaker 1: and they're just they're like, he's here. They just know.
- 53:22Speaker 1: They're like he's here.
- 53:23Speaker 7: And was that at all creepy?
- 53:25Speaker 1: Like there's two of them and they're he's just here, yeah,
- 53:29Speaker 1: And we're in there, and all of a sudden that's
- 53:31Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, one gets I gather gets
- 53:34Speaker 1: up out of its bed and I can just see
- 53:37Speaker 1: half its face and one of its horns and the
- 53:39Speaker 1: thing is that thing is not me to that sink.
- 53:41Speaker 1: But it's just like right, all of a sudden, that
- 53:44Speaker 1: was the first one I got a good look at.
- 53:45Speaker 1: I got half his face in a horn and he's
- 53:48Speaker 1: just there and it's like it didn't he had zero interest.
- 53:54Speaker 1: All he wanted to do was slip out. But you're like, yeah,
- 53:57Speaker 1: I see now, do you know what I mean? Like they
- 54:00Speaker 1: let you just get on them and sure at some
- 54:02Speaker 1: point now and then you know, but he was nothing
- 54:06Speaker 1: like that. There was no all the all the tension,
- 54:11Speaker 1: any tension that I felt, was all because all the stories.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Do you follow me? All the stories? So it's like
- 54:21Speaker 1: you're carrying all those tales, right because otherwise you'd be like,
- 54:27Speaker 1: what do you like? What is the deal? It's some
- 54:29Speaker 1: like giant.
- 54:31Speaker 7: Bovid looking thing and the trackers aren't throwing off any cues,
- 54:35Speaker 7: Like you should be pretty scared right now, Like you're
- 54:38Speaker 7: looking at the trackers and they're just cool as ice.
- 54:41Speaker 1: R y know they do when when one comes, they're
- 54:45Speaker 1: down flat on the ground. Dive out of the way,
- 54:48Speaker 1: but they're down and they want to be down where
- 54:50Speaker 1: they can't get hooked back up and and Morgan, the
- 54:55Speaker 1: professional hunter kept saying to the trackers. He's like them,
- 55:00Speaker 1: don't worry about them, like they're that's my job, and
- 55:05Speaker 1: they're gonna be very quickly. They're gonna very quickly go
- 55:08Speaker 1: from being in front of me to be to be
- 55:11Speaker 1: in mind because like he's to do with the gun,
- 55:13Speaker 1: Like at the end of the day, he's the guy
- 55:15Speaker 1: that's putting everybody in the situation, and so it's his
- 55:18Speaker 1: job to draw the attention. So like your role as
- 55:22Speaker 1: a professional hunter, your role is to all of a
- 55:25Speaker 1: sudden be the menacing one. And he wants all eyes
- 55:29Speaker 1: on him, Like he don't he don't get to dive down,
- 55:34Speaker 1: do you know what I mean? He's got to stay
- 55:36Speaker 1: on the ground, Like that's that's what you sign up for.
- 55:39Speaker 1: You're like, there's it's just not part of the ethos,
- 55:44Speaker 1: do you know. I mean, Like, if it comes, you're
- 55:48Speaker 1: there and that's your thing. You don't get to flinch.
- 55:53Speaker 1: You gotta go forward into it, and everybody else is
- 55:57Speaker 1: expected to like save themselves. He's like, don't do anything.
- 56:02Speaker 1: He wouldn't even tell you, don't do anything that takes
- 56:04Speaker 1: the attention for me, Like I'm the problem I'm the
- 56:09Speaker 1: one up in his face, not you, you know, uh so no,
- 56:14Speaker 1: like nothing like that like other stuff. You know, like
- 56:16Speaker 1: we had a black we had a run and we
- 56:19Speaker 1: talked about this bunch on the podcast, but previously we
- 56:22Speaker 1: had a we had a not even a run it.
- 56:23Speaker 1: We had an experience with a black mom. But and
- 56:25Speaker 1: you're like, holy cow, Like I can so easily see
- 56:29Speaker 1: how that goes Yeah, you're like, I can see how
- 56:32Speaker 1: that happens with that, with my experience with Kate Buffalo,
- 56:37Speaker 1: I wouldn't have come away. Hadn't I had the background
- 56:40Speaker 1: of reading and the stories, I wouldn't have come away
- 56:44Speaker 1: and been like, I can see how that goes bad.
- 56:46Speaker 3: I have I have a question, and it's this is
- 56:48Speaker 3: not a this is not a passive aggressive nor aggressive
- 56:53Speaker 3: aggressive question, and it's for all of you guys that hunt,
- 56:57Speaker 3: which is everyone here. Given how we started talking about
- 57:03Speaker 3: this because of the two unfortunate guys who died hunting
- 57:08Speaker 3: Kate Buffalo, and you were saying, well, you know, it's
- 57:10Speaker 3: kind of it's a part of hunting k Buffalo. That's
- 57:13Speaker 3: a risk. So you can't really say, oh, it's you know,
- 57:18Speaker 3: you can say that it's a bad thing that it happened,
- 57:20Speaker 3: and it's sad that it happened, but you can't really
- 57:22Speaker 3: say it was totally unexpected.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like it's kind of complicated. I don't want
- 57:28Speaker 1: to sound.
- 57:29Speaker 3: That's not my question though, Okay, oh sorry, that's okay.
- 57:32Speaker 3: My question is knowing that, like if you on this
- 57:36Speaker 3: hunt were to have expired because you got killed by
- 57:41Speaker 3: a k buffalo, Like do you ever think some of
- 57:46Speaker 3: the things that you're hunting, Like is it ever irresponsible
- 57:51Speaker 3: to go on a hunt, given your family, given other
- 57:58Speaker 3: responsibilities you have in the world, Like do you ever
- 58:00Speaker 3: think about that before you pursue a certain animal.
- 58:04Speaker 1: Or no, because none of it's like, none of it's
- 58:07Speaker 1: none of it's like that.
- 58:08Speaker 7: Also, I don't know that, and I don't want to
- 58:10Speaker 7: speak for those guys, but I don't know that what
- 58:13Speaker 7: in the long run that what Steve did hunting buffalo
- 58:16Speaker 7: is any more dangerous than going fishing or like you
- 58:21Speaker 7: name it, hunting grizzlies or like anything can get yeah, right.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Hunting big fishing, big water in small boats. Yeah, but
- 58:30Speaker 1: none of it rises up when I when I dudes
- 58:33Speaker 1: that have families and die on K two that that
- 58:39Speaker 1: I'm like, man, it's kind of weird call. It's an
- 58:42Speaker 1: odd call as a dad.
- 58:45Speaker 10: But they'd probably say, because there's a death for every
- 58:51Speaker 10: four summits true, yeah or whatever, right, I think it's
- 58:54Speaker 10: a death for every four something Like I'm saying, there
- 58:56Speaker 10: is a point there, there is a at which where
- 59:01Speaker 10: there's a point where the risk is so high. And
- 59:03Speaker 10: I don't condemn him, but there's a point where the
- 59:06Speaker 10: risk is so high when a guy dies on K
- 59:08Speaker 10: two and you don't need to go on K two.
- 59:10Speaker 10: Like when a guy dies on K two and I
- 59:12Speaker 10: see that he has a family, you know, I will
- 59:15Speaker 10: think to myself, huh, that's like a strange call or
- 59:19Speaker 10: call you.
- 59:19Speaker 7: Made going base jumping or something like.
- 59:23Speaker 1: I don't know enough about the statistics on it.
- 59:25Speaker 7: Yeah, but I mean I would look at that, it's like, yeah,
- 59:28Speaker 7: that'd be a response, like.
- 59:29Speaker 1: An odd call. Yeah, when you have kids. Yeah, you know,
- 59:32Speaker 1: one of the first, one of the first times I
- 59:34Speaker 1: ever really stopped thinking about that thing, like like this
- 59:37Speaker 1: kind they were talking about is Yannie and I had
- 59:39Speaker 1: the good fortune and spend some time with Rourke Denver,
- 59:42Speaker 1: who uh was a Navy seal was deployed overseas served
- 59:49Speaker 1: in combat zones, combat veteran, and he would always use this.
- 59:53Speaker 1: He had this like like a euphemism for death. You
- 59:57Speaker 1: know what you would say, if I all, if I fall?
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: And I remember him saying that he went to his
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: mom to say, if I fall, and that was the term.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: That's the term you use, Uh, if I fall. I
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: don't like, don't. I don't want you to be sad, Like,
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: don't be sad if I fall. And and I don't
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: think that way, but I I it was funny to
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: hear someone where, uh, someone in a certain occupation who
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: had been to such high risk environments. That got to
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: the point where that's how you think about it, m hm,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: that it's so high risk that you're telling your mom
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: how you would like her to how you would like
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: her to feel. But I, but that's high.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: Risk military service. I feel like, is it.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Totally what I'm saying? Like that, Like that is like
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: legitimately high risk climbing K two, Like I think like
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: to be like, uh.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: To be not just not just high risk, but like
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: in the service of your country.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Oh, it's yeah, I'm not what I was getting at.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: I wasn't there's there's there's zero parallel. What I was
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: getting at was I was what I was trying to capture.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: There was I was trying to capture, Like what is
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the mindset of someone who does things that are actually
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: high risk? Right? Like not true, there's you can't even
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: there's there's no you can't equate it at all, like
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: me dicking around hunting with doing something like that. You
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: can't equate it. But the point was, like the way
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: Rourke had such a and maybe it's over now because
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: he's out and his kids and all that, but he
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: had such a comfortable he just arrived at a very
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: comfortable place about it because it's actually high risk, right,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Like remember there was a single helicopter crash that killed
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: eighteen guys, including like in the like thirteen, I don't
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: know it was thirteen or fourteen seals all like bam.
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: I mean they couldn't do their job if they know,
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: you know what I mean, if they worried about it.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Yes, super comfortable. A friend of mine, like a kind
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of a friend of guy acquaintance I had, the guy
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: knew died on K two, he lost most of his
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: friend group. Already very comfortable, like very comfortable with it
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: because it's like there's such a likelihood, like he went
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: once and got injured, one up in the hospital, got better,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: went back and died. And it's like, I don't there's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: no thing, is there any There's no thing in hunting.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: There's no thing in hunting. Uh, there's no thing in
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: hunting that is at that risk level.
- 1:02:37Speaker 6: Do you know what the like is there statistic for
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: injuries like k Buffalo? Is it is that even like a.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I don't know what that would be.
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: I feel like it's got to be relatively low.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: A couple of years, yeah, but I mean there's not
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: that many people doing it, but a couple of.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Year is Brody and Yannis and Seth. Is there any
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: hunt you wouldn't do because of the risk?
- 1:03:00Speaker 9: I mean if if there was like all of a sudden,
- 1:03:04Speaker 9: you know, like say you know the Coups deer hunt Mexico, say,
- 1:03:09Speaker 9: all of a sudden, it's like extremely dangerous and like
- 1:03:12Speaker 9: to go there and a lot of people are getting
- 1:03:15Speaker 9: like killed by the cartel.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Whatever something like mafia stuff.
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I'd be like, Okay, I'm good, I don't I
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: don't need to go.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: But not the actual so like the circumstances with the area.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: No, okay, answer stuff.
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: But yeah, not not.
- 1:03:32Speaker 9: Not an animal. It would be the environment, like the
- 1:03:37Speaker 9: you know, it'd be more human element.
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: I would say, right, there's some places that I wouldn't like.
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: I'm not experienced by any means, but there's certain places
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: where I wouldn't like.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Free die at m That's that's an interesting there's areas interesting.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I had that, but then I went there and it
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: was not fun.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: You took me there, didn't you.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Well then I went with Greg another time, uh like
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: NorCal stuff, you know, and not. I shouldn't say it
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: was not fun. It was like so much going on,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Like it's so much going on, and then there's that
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: you got that stupid shark proof thing hanging off your ankle,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: shark deterrent that that. Yeah, but you just get used
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: to it. He just does it now and he's like,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: you don't think about it. There's nothing you can do.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: You're not gonna know if what if you get hit
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: by a white white shark. He's like, that's relaxing. You're
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: there's nothing you're gonna do. Other sharks, there's stuff you
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: can do. He's like, with that shark, you're not gonna know.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: And there's nothing you can do, and so I just
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: don't think about it. That's just that's Greg's take on it.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Greg dives that. Greg. That's cut it. That's his whole,
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: that's his zone.
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: I wish Greg was over here. You started talking about
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: like how does he assess the risk? I mean, I
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: understand that all of these things we were talking, like
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: extreme running or hunting in you know, really wild environments
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: like these are the things that make you feel alive,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: so you can't be so afraid of death and all
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: the things that you're doing. But like where is the
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: where is the line?
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: But again, the odds, like if you're going to start
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: worrying about stuff, the odds are that you're going to
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: get smashed by another driver driving around your town and
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: get killed that way before you get killed by a
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: grizz or a cape buffalo or a great white shark.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: That's like, that's what the psychology is is there's these
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: fantastical things that suck up tons of headspace. So when
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: I took Jimmy dive in the oil rigs in Louisiana,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: like it's just they're just our sharks. It's not like
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: what will happen if we see a shark. I mean,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: there's just are every rig. There's just they're there, like
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: bigger than you, every rig. They're just around, And so
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I then I'm not worried about me, but I'm like
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: worried about something like there's a sort of mental irritation
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: that that'll happen to him. But I'm like, why am
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: I not having a bunch of mental irritation that he'll
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: make a really dumb judgment and get himself in the prop?
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: It's probably like far more likely that you're gonna screw
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: up and someone's gonna throw it in reverse when you're
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: not supposed to, when you're gonna miss here that it's
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: clear or whatever. Why am I not all day thinking
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: about the prop? But instead all day I'm thinking about sharks.
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: But then you talk to the guys you're with and
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: you're like, oh, this that's from the boat prop. This
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: that's from the boat problem. I feel like there's a
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: level of what you're like, but you don't think about
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: boat props because they're not exciting to think about.
- 1:06:49Speaker 6: I think it's also what you're like necessarily used to
- 1:06:52Speaker 6: because like I'm just gonna say, we're around a lot
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: more boat props than we are sharks, Like that's a you.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: Know, yeah, I mean the things you can't control are scarier, right, yeah,
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: especially when they got teeth or horns or whatever.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: Or you're just like men, you worry about everything all
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: the time, no matter what boat props and your mom.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: You often aren't worried about the right thing.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Tell me more about that, really.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Well, no, you probably are like you hanging around here,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: you know you ought to be worried about.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: I mean, just let's add it to the list getting.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: In being Uh, yeah, you're worried about the right thing.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: Being in little skiffs in the big water.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: It all sudden you're in the water and the boat ain't.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: Yeah, that's bad.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Ye.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: I think about that every single time I get in
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: the boat.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: It's just like insurmountable, like you can't swim it.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: I watched one of my kids get in the boat.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: I think about what would happen? Like, do you think
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: about that today?
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: Mabel? She's someone said something about the boat sinking and
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I said, she said, well, we're dead, And I said, no,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: we're gonna swim that way. She goes, I can't swim
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: that far. I'll get hypothermia. I'm like, that's true. I
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: didn't tell her. I was like, well, we're gonna stick
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: with the boat, and I don't know, Like that's the
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: thing to pay attention to.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: It's on the radar.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: But when I'm diving around here, and what I'm thinking about,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: I'm like, I know they don't, but why don't killer
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: whales bite people? Why don't they bite people? That's what
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I'm thinking about, Like, I know they don't, but what
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: if they did? And I'm not thinking about what if
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: I come up and the boat's gone.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: That happened once.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that happened to be Jimmy. Well, no, we were
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: by the shore. It would just been the sucky situation.
- 1:08:48Speaker 6: Well, if we were out in the middle of the ocean,
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: we've been a far bigger problem.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: I mean, you've almost killed me in these waters before
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: they did. You hear about that story?
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: Yeah, over Greg's place, he has.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it be like he killed his girlfriend, not the
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: mother of his children.
- 1:09:11Speaker 6: There's go pro footage of him like diving around like
- 1:09:15Speaker 6: on the bottom, around that chum bag and sea lions
- 1:09:19Speaker 6: like coming in at Frank's coming in behind him and
- 1:09:24Speaker 6: heads going like here and just going straight past him. Yeah, well,
- 1:09:32Speaker 6: I mean, like those do attack people.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: They swim through the water their heads.
- 1:09:37Speaker 6: Yeah, well underwater they spiral like this and like get
- 1:09:40Speaker 6: all close to you and act all aggressive.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: You've seen that in the water, No, but I've.
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: I've I mean he just had him and Greg got
- 1:09:48Speaker 6: to happen. I'm trying to stay away from those. I've
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: seen seals. I've gotten pretty close to seals. Seals don't
- 1:09:53Speaker 6: do anything though.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: No, I'm not going to get in the water.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: We had one last talking point. Sorry, go ahead.
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: I was just going to say, I think that's when
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: you can picture what people would say when you if
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: you were to die.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what do you people would be like? I
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: wrote about that.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: I wrote about that, Yeah for the Free Press thing.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I wrote about that. When you're doing things you
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: can't live that way, but you're doing things you just
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: picture like you know, oh that he would bring his children,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: he would put his children at risk.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, But there's truth to it. I mean,
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: there is truth to that. I'm not saying that that
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: truth should like supersede the other positive benefits that are,
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: you know, gleaned by giving your kids the opportunities to
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: do these really wild adventurous things, and I think as
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: parents we've are in agreement that that outweighs the risk.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: But it's sad to think, like if you were too,
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: if you two went diving tomorrow and you to be killed,
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: Like what an asshole took his kid out by anything?
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Lost our boat lightning?
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but I guess this really, But like if you're
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: if he took his kid driving, yeah, that's a whole
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: other story in a you know, in sketchy winter conditions,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: and then there's an accident.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean there's a I know, there's always yeah, the.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: Like the judgment part that that I don't I'm aware
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: of it. But the judgment part. I got enough problems
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: with something bad happens, Like the judgment part I wouldn't
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: worry about. And when uh, what's kind of funny is
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: we'll close this up in a second. But when the submersible,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the Titan, the ocean Gate submersible, when it imploded, I
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: was asked about like and immediately all these people, without
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: even knowing any of the story, all this condemnation, Oh
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: so stupid, what idiots, the Hubrisks. They deserved it, right,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: And it was like before anyone knew the details, there
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: was a ton of condemnation. I'm gonna be careful of
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: my words here because before the details emerged, there was
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: an immediate condemnation and it was kind of like, how
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: dare you be risky?
- 1:12:39Speaker 8: Care you go where you're not supposed to?
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, how dare you be risky? We're gonna ridicule you
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: for being risky?
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: Uh?
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: And I almost wrote about that. I was asked to
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: write about it. I was asked to write about risk
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: and like in this sort of thing where it's people
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: feeling like they had to be so safe all the time.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't because when the story
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: emerged about Stockton Rush, the CEO right of the company,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: and his attitude toward his own team, his attitude towards
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: safety records, his attitude towards just basically the science of
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: what he was trying to do was negligent to the
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: point that he kind of killed those people, Like.
- 1:13:28Speaker 11: He he not quite did he put a gun against him,
- 1:13:32Speaker 11: but like he was toying with the hammer, right, he
- 1:13:38Speaker 11: was playing with a pistol with those guys downrange, like
- 1:13:43Speaker 11: to put it in gun terms.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: So then I was like, man, I'm glad I didn't
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: do what I did because it was something bad. And
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: so there's that there's like people that get into a
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: thing where there's like an inevitability of what's going to come.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: To bring it back to Kate Buffalo and I respect him.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: You know. We talked about Morgan.
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: Potter, who's wonderful.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Yep, great guy, family man. But there you're like, oh,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: so you're gonna track a bunch of those and you're
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: going to track three or four wounded ones every year,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and you're gonna do this for thirty or forty years. Oh,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: I see, that's an interesting choice. It's like it's.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: Also interesting doing that. He was doing that prior to
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: having a family. Yeah, that's like, you know, in many ways,
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: a lot of the stuff that you do, even if
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: I don't like it or if I think it's too risky,
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: you did it before we were married and had a family.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: So how could I ask you not to do it now?
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: Like it wouldn't be fair. It's not who you are.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: I don't feel like I do risky ship anymore. I
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: just don't know.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: I don't feel like I do risky stuff. Well I
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: just went.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: Run. Yeah, some people could.
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Say, give me a heart attack.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: We just had a We just had a colleague that
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: was for a run and had a tragic accident. Not
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: an accident, but a health you know issue.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Do I know about this?
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you know about it. You're the one who told
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: me about it. One of our camera guys passed away.
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: I didn't know the details though, so I didn't tell
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: you about it.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Oh sorry you said that to me.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: Well yeah, but I but at that point, we like.
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: There's a goal funding front. We had a camera man
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: is we had a cameraman, yes, Chldren. His name is
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: Mike Lindamouth. He he filmed. If you watched the me
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Eater TV show and you saw an episode where Yanni
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: and Night went hundred meal deer for instance, in Wyoming
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: with crooked sky outfitters, like the cameraman that shot that show.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: He filmed, he filmed here.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: He at this table and yep, yep, okay, yeah, he
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: sat in this sat here.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: He was like out on a run and collapsed. So
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I don't know tons of details about it, but when
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: he was imagining. I hate to do this, I mean
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: I hate to even talk with this someone that recently
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: passed When he was imagining the risk in his life.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: I don't think he was imagining No, that right, he
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: wasn't looking in that He wasn't looking in that direction.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: And this is not man. I don't even want to
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: kind of be like being I don't even want to
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: kind of get like philosophical about what his family is
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: going through, like or like draw lessons from what happened
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: to me. Let me, he's totally unexpected, totally tragic. However,
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: there's just there's like the things you are obsessing over,
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: and then there's the things that are going to get you,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: and they're not the same sometimes for the for the
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: lucky few, they're the same stocked and rushed, the tight
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: and submersible guy. The thing he obsessed over, the thing
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: he worried about, got him, you.
- 1:17:27Speaker 10: Know, And most people, some people would say, you know,
- 1:17:30Speaker 10: that's okay.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: He probably would have. I think he would have. Last
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: thought before we close, you guys are wondering why how
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: it came to be that I used to tease you? Guys?
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: I don't think I teased you know you did?
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, I think it qualifies.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Here's what why do why does that? Why do I
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: now have one?
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Guys?
- 1:17:51Speaker 8: In those stormy chromers.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe the term goofy hat. I didn't know I
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: was teasing something I didn't understand. You want to know
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: what happened, Here's what happened. There's a rancher that lets
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: me hunt his place, and as I do when I
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: get when someone lets me hunt their place, I always
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: like to follow up with a gift. And there's nothing
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: a rancher likes more than a stormy chromer. Yep.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: So him and his cowboy maybe, but I see where
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: you're going.
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: So him and his kid.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: So first Light had a stormy chromer, a couple of
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: stormy chromer collabs. So I wanted to get one for
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: the dad, one for the sun. I got one on
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: a warm one, uh, and I got one on the
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: wax cotton. But I want him to come to my
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: house so that I could then package them with a
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: couple of little gifts and send it as an annual
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: thank you. And I got it. And I don't want
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: them to listen to this and think I put it on.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: But I got it. And I was like, oh, I see,
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: because you order it to your size and in a boat,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: there's no way your hat's gonna blow off. Door hunting whatever.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: It's just suckers on there and the bill is the
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: right length and sits just where.
- 1:19:09Speaker 8: You It's not too long, it's not too short, just right.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: It's a little bit warm. It's not a hot weather hat.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: But around Yeah, I'm sure ones have their place, man,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the boating around your hat is staying where it belongs.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: I think it's pretty interesting that as a thank you
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: gift you ordered something for two people that you thought
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: was goofy looking.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: That's a good point.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I thought it was a little bit stolen balor for like.
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: I thought it was like it'd be like if these
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: guys had big old belt buckles. Yeah he does, well,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: he does now not. It was just like it was
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: like it's like I view it like it's like a
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: it's like a rancher hat, right.
- 1:19:47Speaker 7: Yeah, he's trying to be people in.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: The egg industry. So when a guy that is not
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: in the egg and a guy that wasn't in the
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: egg industry, I was a little bit like, yeah doing that.
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: I just want to know how long that thing sat there.
- 1:19:58Speaker 8: And Steve's like looking.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: At I.
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: Knew immediately.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: I knew immediately. I understood why.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: It just happened to be your size that you had ordered.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: Well, you know what's funny. Brodie's son last year at
- 1:20:11Speaker 6: the he was running one. Yeah, and you said it
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: was the greatest hat ever made. And he told me
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: about the history in Michigan and we looked on the
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: back and everything.
- 1:20:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: See when I was growing up, still trash talk. When
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: I was growing up, it was like conflicted. I was
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: conflicted here I am. I got the name of hat on.
- 1:20:27Speaker 9: When I was growing up, it was I never even
- 1:20:28Speaker 9: thought of a rancher or someone in the egg and
- 1:20:30Speaker 9: she wearing it was always like the north Woods hunters,
- 1:20:33Speaker 9: like folks in Maine, folks in northern Minnesota.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Was got like, no, no, no, no, maybe Maine, Norton, Minnesota.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I would have been like, really, what's Michigan, isn't it.
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: Yeah, it's a Michigan pro Michigan.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Up again, like hag adjacent. I think adjacent, Like if
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: you were down, I mean, doesn't I don't. We don't
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: spend all day. Let you know something, I'm happy like
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: some guy getting a cranberry scone in Minneapolis. You know, yeah,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: I get.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: I gotta be like, really, I find it interesting how
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: many people country the stormy chromer to me, is a
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: very like technical, functional piece of equipment, especially when you
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: compare it to a classic half plastic, half cotton baseball
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: hat that most hunters are walking around in the woods
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: in that really, I mean, it gives you some shade.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: But other than that, it's like the fabric that it's
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: made out of is not very technical. It's if they
