- 0:00Bob Parker's Fox Sports, your haulers, doesn't have a lot of
- 0:04sponsorship on it and we kind of knew your sponsorship situation,
- 0:07but it seems startling to see it.
- 0:09I'm curious what you thought when you saw it and if it brings
- 0:13any additional concern. I mean, it's tough out there.
- 0:17I mean sponsorships hard to come by and, and certainly you're
- 0:21while it's such an important time in our sport to to, to
- 0:26recognize that, you know, that the sponsorship dollars are not
- 0:30flowing like they used to. For sure, everyone's had to
- 0:34adjust quite a bit. And obviously, you know, you've
- 0:38got, you know, there's, there's certain aspects that JGR has to
- 0:42price in to, you know, their pricing as well that it's
- 0:45probably tough. So it's, I don't know, it's just
- 0:49it's part of it. But certainly having one sponsor
- 0:52for 20 years, you know, made things pretty easy and now it's
- 0:55all kind of catching up. So it's certainly, you know, is
- 0:59it concerning from my end maybe a little bit, but not you know,
- 1:06it's, it's probably more concerning from JGR standpoint.
- 1:09John Bianchi, The Athletic, I want to ask you this from the
- 1:11team owner's perspective about pertaining to the clash.
- 1:15Where would you like to see it go?
- 1:16Do you want to see it kind of continue this model of, you
- 1:18know, short track kind of thing? Or is there something more you
- 1:21can do in in terms of cost and everything else and what the
- 1:24future of this race should be? Well, I, I think the I, I, you
- 1:28know, I'm personally in the boat of I, I liked it at Daytona.
- 1:31It was just a really good warm up for the 500.
- 1:34I thought it provided, you know, tons of storylines for, you
- 1:38know, the 500. But it is a little bit different
- 1:41nowadays, right? The racing itself on
- 1:43superspeedways is different. You know, you used to back then
- 1:46if you saw someone really dominate the Clash, it was like,
- 1:48all right, they've got a great handling car.
- 1:50They're going to be tough to beat.
- 1:51Doesn't matter where they start. Now we know that is such a track
- 1:54position race. I don't know that you'll get the
- 1:56direct correlation, but it certainly could bring up some
- 2:00hype back to the to the 500. So I'm probably in that boat or
- 2:04you know, really anywhere that helps, you know, obviously grow
- 2:07and get some excitement going for the season.
- 2:09So I don't really have a bucket list place where I would want to
- 2:13put it internationally. You know, I think it's I mean,
- 2:22maybe just from the standpoint that there's probably a little
- 2:25bit more time to prepare for the race teams, right?
- 2:27It's not in the middle of the season, so you know, and then
- 2:31you've got the gap after that for the Super Bowl for you to
- 2:34get back it reset and and go for the 500.
- 2:37So yeah, perhaps. Ask you about the state of the
- 2:40sport. Obviously, what happened the
- 2:42playoffs last year, There's a lot of controversy there.
- 2:44There is a lawsuit hanging over the sport as it enters a new
- 2:47season. Just your perspective on where
- 2:49NASCAR is AT and what it needs to do going forward into 2025.
- 2:53Yeah. I mean, I think it's a really
- 2:55crucial year all around. You know, there's a lot of, you
- 2:59know, big decisions that that definitely need to get made and
- 3:03certainly feel like, you know, it's a crucial year with the new
- 3:06TV partners, you know, getting our fans to transition over
- 3:08there into the streaming platforms.
- 3:10That's going to be big. So certainly, I think it's it's
- 3:13just a huge year. You're you're going to have to
- 3:16find a way to get everyone to transition into, you know, and,
- 3:19and kind of rally around the new type of media partners that we
- 3:23have and, you know, hopefully rely on them to help grow the
- 3:27sport as well. So I think that it's just a
- 3:29crucial year all around. Go to Jenna and then Kelly.
- 3:34Danny, I heard a through the Grapevine that you've got some
- 3:36strong opinions on this 41st Driver Elite.
- 3:41I've said nothing about it. Another reporter told me he had
- 3:44a phone interview with you and that you had many opinions.
- 3:49Is that incorrect? OK, well anyway.
- 3:52I recall having an opinion on it, but OK.
- 3:54Do you have an opinion on it that you want to share with me?
- 3:57I mean, I, I don't know. I mean, I just think, you know,
- 4:04I, I just, it reaps of desperation.
- 4:08I, I don't know how else to say it.
- 4:09I don't know how nice you can really say it.
- 4:12It just feels like you're really trying to get any kind of
- 4:15headline you can to, to be relevant.
- 4:17And I just, I don't love it. OK, well it exists.
- 4:21I, I think it, I, I know it's just it to me, it's a short term
- 4:24gain, long term loss. I just think that you you're the
- 4:28premier stock car series in in the US, the premier racing sport
- 4:35in the US be the big boys, you know, and then force people to
- 4:39come in here and and get their credentials and and do it the
- 4:42the natural way. I don't think it's going to be a
- 4:43big factor really anywhere other than Daytona.
- 4:47But just Simply put, saying that someone has a name that
- 4:51interests you and that they're going to have an automatic bid
- 4:54into the highest form of Motorsports in the USI don't.
- 4:58I don't love it. It does exist though.
- 5:02Is there any driver you'd like to see come try to get in?
- 5:05No. Not really cool, sorry.
- 5:09It's fine. Eraser.com, Denny, all these
- 5:16questions about the Clash, talking about the Clash, whether
- 5:18it's at La or here, it seems like a lot of it is around the
- 5:22venues, the the markets, the the history, the feeling behind it.
- 5:27So has this event now moved away from whether the racing even
- 5:32matters anymore? Is is this event more about
- 5:34something bigger than what we see on the racetrack?
- 5:37Yeah. I mean, I always think that the
- 5:38the racing itself, that is a is a important factor.
- 5:42It's what, you know, while the race is going on, you're going
- 5:45to get, there's either going to be a social media buzz around
- 5:49positive around the racing or not.
- 5:52So I still think that that's a important thing.
- 5:55But you've got a great point in that it is, you know, it is
- 5:57something else. And as far as like the spectacle
- 6:00itself that, you know, it is an exhibition type race.
- 6:04And so I think it's just kind of a a primer to to let people know
- 6:08that we're racing again. Truthfully, I think that that's
- 6:11kind of, you know, LA had its own place and I thought it was,
- 6:15you know, really well done. And here it looks like, you
- 6:18know, they did a really good job with it.
- 6:20So I think each place has its certain relevance, right?
- 6:24And I think this place has its relevance as well with the
- 6:27history. So it just seems like moving it
- 6:30around and changing things is what's stirring the interest,
- 6:35not necessarily what's happening on tracks, which is what you're
- 6:39saying. Go to read next.
- 6:43Reed Spencer would NASCAR, why are you mentioned Daytona?
- 6:46You've got three wins there. How significant would it be for
- 6:49you to get #4 considering there are only two guys ahead of you,
- 6:542 guys who have more, And then for what?
- 6:56A follow up? For the what now?
- 6:59To get a fourth Daytona 500 win. Yeah, I mean, certainly would be
- 7:05big all around. I mean, there's there's lots of
- 7:07really good stuff that comes with it with the bonus points
- 7:10and whatnot. Yeah, there's only a select
- 7:13group that are really, really elite that have that have won
- 7:16those. I wish I had a bigger role in it
- 7:20now than what, you know, kind of what I used to have in our
- 7:23results and finishes. But truthfully in the next Gen.
- 7:27I just have struggled to just find the checkered flag, you
- 7:31know, at some point of the day. So I just, yeah, I, I don't
- 7:35know, it would mean a lot to me personally, obviously and, and
- 7:38certainly put us in, in a, in a really historic group there.
- 7:41But you know, it'll be. It'll be a tough task for sure.
- 7:45You started to answer my next question, which was, is the next
- 7:48Gen. radically different in terms of the way it drives on
- 7:52superspeedways from the previous generation?
- 7:54Yeah, mainly from the drag perspective.
- 7:57You know, I, I, I mentioned it in another media setting, but
- 8:01you know, we just, I learned so much from Dale Junior and Tony
- 8:05Stewart and some of the best when I was coming into the
- 8:07sport, Jeff Gordon on how they created runs and then would pull
- 8:12out a line and keep that run going and he would just see them
- 8:15bouncing off these cars. And you really saw it kind of
- 8:18during the end of the 2016 Daytona 500, that last lap where
- 8:22we came from 4th or 5th to win it.
- 8:24And it was just, I was just constantly using cars around me
- 8:27to keep this massive run going. And now it's just, you know, you
- 8:31have to stay in line. You're, you're really just
- 8:34hoping your line goes forward, you're almost in a traffic jam
- 8:37and you're hoping that your lane is the one that has less
- 8:40congestion. And, and so it's just a
- 8:42different beast. Now, obviously we've seen, you
- 8:45know, underdog type winners in it in the last few years.
- 8:49And it's just a lot of that is just where you're at.
- 8:52Can you cycle good in through pit Rd.
- 8:54Can you save enough fuel during the green to, to make your cycle
- 8:57shorter? So we still have an important
- 8:59role, but it's just, it's our role is actually more off the
- 9:03track than it is, you know, on the racing surface.
- 9:06Hey Spencer, SiriusXM, NASCAR Radio and catchments.com.
- 9:09Curious if adding the three additional Toyotas has helped it
- 9:12all with Toyota's effort overall at Daytona.
- 9:15Because in the past there haven't been enough people to
- 9:17draft with. Yeah, it it should.
- 9:20It certainly should. I mean, you know, we, we worked
- 9:25really well together at Talladega till we ended up
- 9:27crashing each other. And then from that point on, it
- 9:29was like, can we can we really all get on the same page?
- 9:33But certainly and the power numbers allows us to at least
- 9:37create our own strategy. You know, we were always at at
- 9:41the mercy of the other manufacturers and trying to
- 9:43figure out which either was it Ford or Chevy was going to pit
- 9:47when we wanted to them to pit. And we had to react to that
- 9:51where I think we probably have enough numbers now that we can
- 9:54actually just create our own strategy.
- 9:57So that will certainly be beneficial.
- 9:59But you know, when it comes down to the end of the race, it's a
- 10:01matter of, you know, kind of who's left.
- 10:03And you know, I, I used to love being super selfish in those
- 10:07types of races because I would just use anyone.
- 10:09I didn't care who, whether they were teammate or not to, to try
- 10:12to get a win. But so much with the
- 10:15manufacturer alliances, now that you know it, it's really, really
- 10:18difficult to breakthrough that. I'll finish with you.
- 10:21Are you? Clear on the and the
- 10:24manufacturer alliances for Daytona, on what's allowed and
- 10:28what's not allowed after Martinsville.
- 10:31I, yeah, I mean, I think so. I don't, I, I think that speed
- 10:34waves would be status quo. I, I don't think that I saw
- 10:38anything in the rules that would make me think that things would
- 10:42change from a manufacturer's standpoint there.
- 10:45You know, they, they have their own meetings and they say, don't
- 10:49push this, you know, group, push our group instead.
- 10:51And you're not going to stop those words from being spoken.
- 10:56But it's it, that's just a, something you're not going to
- 10:59put back in the box now. It's just that's just kind of
- 11:02what we got.
