- 0:15Speaker: Hello and welcome back to the Masonic Roundtable Weekly
- 0:19Speaker: program, where brothers and Masons get together to talk
- 0:23Speaker: about Masonic news and opinions in a friendly and social manner.
- 0:26Speaker: Following disclaimer applies for tonight's episode.
- 0:29Speaker: The thoughts and opinions expressed here are solely those
- 0:32Speaker: of the participants and do not reflect any Grand Lodge
- 0:35Speaker: statements or positions.
- 0:37Speaker: Please keep your comments open to the public and on the level
- 0:40Speaker: and watch out.
- 0:41Speaker: Chat along with us, uh, on
- 0:43Speaker: Facebook or YouTube and your
- 0:46Speaker: comments might show up on the
- 0:48Speaker: air.
- 0:49Speaker: You know me, I am not John Ruark.
- 0:52Speaker: He is out doing stuff and things tonight.
- 0:54Speaker: I am, however, Jason Richards,
- 0:56Speaker: past master of Acacia Lodge
- 0:58Speaker: number sixteen in Clifton,
- 1:00Speaker: Virginia.
- 1:02Speaker: Next up, Joe Martinez.
- 1:05Speaker: Hi. Oh, hello.
- 1:09Speaker: Hi. Joe Martinez.
- 1:10Speaker: Yeah, I disappeared.
- 1:12Speaker: Oh, hello.
- 1:14Speaker: We got a new guy at the controls, Joe Martinez.
- 1:17Speaker: Uh, fix my name.
- 1:18Speaker: Uh. Let's see.
- 1:19Speaker: Past master of Manasseh Lodge
- 1:20Speaker: number one eighty two in
- 1:21Speaker: Manassas, Virginia.
- 1:22Speaker: And, uh, yeah, member of things and stuff.
- 1:25Speaker: So good to see you.
- 1:28Speaker: We're glad to have you.
- 1:30Speaker: Next up, Robert Johnson.
- 1:35Speaker: What's up?
- 1:37Speaker: Hey, Robert Johnson, past master, Waukegan, seventy eight,
- 1:40Speaker: past Master of Novum, eleven eighty three, the premier
- 1:43Speaker: education lodge in the state of Illinois and the host of the
- 1:45Speaker: Whence Came You podcast.
- 1:47Speaker: Great to be here as always.
- 1:52Speaker: Is great to have you.
- 1:54Speaker: Ooh.
- 1:56Speaker: All right.
- 1:58Speaker: So first and foremost, we have to give a shout out to all the
- 2:02Speaker: patrons who support the show.
- 2:05Speaker: If you're interested in
- 2:06Speaker: supporting the show, go to
- 2:08Speaker: patreon dot com slash Masonic
- 2:10Speaker: roundtable.
- 2:12Speaker: We do a lot of fun stuff and and goodies, especially at
- 2:16Speaker: Christmas, but, uh, you know, help keep the show running for
- 2:20Speaker: years and years to come, or at least until twenty forty.
- 2:25Speaker: Fourteen more years.
- 2:26Speaker: Fourteen more years to donate to Masonic education.
- 2:29Speaker: So you.
- 2:31Speaker: So, so I, it was an interesting conversation this afternoon.
- 2:35Speaker: And, uh, this came up, John
- 2:36Speaker: John's twenty forty came up and
- 2:39Speaker: I just have to say this, it was
- 2:40Speaker: really interesting.
- 2:41Speaker: He said, I always hear John talk about twenty forty.
- 2:44Speaker: And, you know, I don't view it as a data point.
- 2:47Speaker: I view it as like inspiration.
- 2:52Speaker: Like we could die by twenty forty unless we do something.
- 2:58Speaker: And I thought that was an interesting spin on that.
- 3:01Speaker: I love it.
- 3:02Speaker: Yeah.
- 3:03Speaker: I mean, the funny thing is the most recent trend projections
- 3:07Speaker: are actually twenty thirty six.
- 3:09Speaker: Oof.
- 3:10Speaker: But yeah, it's a range a decade, right?
- 3:16Speaker: We were there yesterday.
- 3:20Speaker: We were there yesterday.
- 3:23Speaker: Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker: Hey, Joe, what have we got going on next weekend?
- 3:27Speaker: Uh oh, next weekend is esoteric con.
- 3:31Speaker: Yes, it has come.
- 3:33Speaker: It is here and it's ready to boogie.
- 3:35Speaker: And it's got its dancing shoes on.
- 3:37Speaker: They're almost here.
- 3:38Speaker: So yeah.
- 3:39Speaker: The weekend begins Friday night at Sinistral Brewing Company in
- 3:43Speaker: Old Town Manassas.
- 3:44Speaker: Uh, so you will see all of your hosts of the Masonic Roundtable
- 3:48Speaker: there, as well as many other awesome Masonic folks and
- 3:51Speaker: spiritual folks and esoteric folks of all flavors.
- 3:55Speaker: Uh, then Saturday we have the actual conference.
- 3:58Speaker: So a full day of esotericism and
- 4:01Speaker: fellowship and hugging your
- 4:03Speaker: buddies.
- 4:04Speaker: And then, uh, Sunday special event.
- 4:06Speaker: Um, if you got an invite, you know, what's going on.
- 4:09Speaker: And, uh, yeah, so this is, uh, let's see number seven.
- 4:13Speaker: So good times seven for real.
- 4:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker: Number seven.
- 4:18Speaker: Oh my God, number six.
- 4:21Speaker: We took a year off.
- 4:22Speaker: Sorry.
- 4:22Speaker: Number six six six seven six seven.
- 4:27Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker: Mhm.
- 4:34Speaker: Um. What else, what else Jason.
- 4:38Speaker: What else?
- 4:39Speaker: Well, it's time for everybody's
- 4:42Speaker: favorite time of the show,
- 4:44Speaker: especially Joe's.
- 4:47Speaker: It is.
- 4:50Speaker: Tarot card of the week.
- 4:51Speaker: You.
- 4:59Speaker: Love that song.
- 5:01Speaker: All right.
- 5:05Speaker: And tonight we have my daily driver.
- 5:09Speaker: The transient Light tarot.
- 5:12Speaker: Mhm.
- 5:12Speaker: Keep it on my desk.
- 5:22Speaker: Oh, crap.
- 5:22Speaker: What is it?
- 5:26Speaker: Is it the tower?
- 5:32Speaker: What is it?
- 5:36Speaker: Yes.
- 5:39Speaker: That is a perfect card for the show.
- 5:42Speaker: Dog.
- 5:43Speaker: Yes.
- 5:46Speaker: Oh, don't we always get the
- 5:48Speaker: tower when Jason's running the
- 5:49Speaker: controls?
- 5:51Speaker: Um, I don't know.
- 5:52Speaker: We have only got the tower twice in the show's history.
- 5:59Speaker: No.
- 6:01Speaker: Okay.
- 6:01Speaker: So we did an episode on where the Freemasons behind the tarot,
- 6:06Speaker: and John did a three card spread for TMR and pulled the tower.
- 6:11Speaker: This is the second time we've pulled the tower in the show.
- 6:14Speaker: All right.
- 6:15Speaker: Um, the tower is, you know, you have some you have some cards in
- 6:20Speaker: tarot that are, you know, universally considered like the
- 6:25Speaker: bad cards, right.
- 6:27Speaker: The ten of swords, three of swords, five of cups.
- 6:33Speaker: Um, the tower and the tower.
- 6:40Speaker: That they should, they should put that before the word.
- 6:43Speaker: The tower.
- 6:44Speaker: Um, yeah, I, I like the tower.
- 6:47Speaker: The tower.
- 6:48Speaker: Yes.
- 6:49Speaker: and I like the death card also.
- 6:51Speaker: But yeah, the tower.
- 6:55Speaker: Maybe it's because I thrive on chaos.
- 6:57Speaker: I don't know.
- 6:57Speaker: I like the death card.
- 6:59Speaker: This is yeah, this has been a chaotic.
- 7:01Speaker: So. So what is the tower all about, Joe?
- 7:05Speaker: Chaos.
- 7:06Speaker: Confusion.
- 7:07Speaker: Uh. Unexpected change.
- 7:10Speaker: So maybe somebody just won a lotto ticket.
- 7:12Speaker: That's unexpected change.
- 7:13Speaker: You never know.
- 7:14Speaker: Um, unexpected chaotic change.
- 7:21Speaker: I mean, if I won the lotto, I'd
- 7:22Speaker: be super violent towards certain
- 7:24Speaker: people, like, right off the bat,
- 7:25Speaker: you know, it's like, hey, you
- 7:26Speaker: remember me?
- 7:27Speaker: You know?
- 7:28Speaker: And yeah, just like pay legal fees now.
- 7:33Speaker: Yes.
- 7:35Speaker: So not too bad.
- 7:36Speaker: I don't I don't mind the tower.
- 7:37Speaker: I mean, it's, it's kind of apropos considering the person
- 7:41Speaker: who loves the tower card the most is not here tonight.
- 7:43Speaker: So.
- 7:45Speaker: Yes.
- 7:45Speaker: Well, I think the tower card has cost.
- 7:51Speaker: The more.
- 7:51Speaker: The most money that a tower card has cost any of us.
- 7:54Speaker: So that's fair.
- 7:57Speaker: But it's an apropos.
- 7:59Speaker: It's a great card for the evening because, like I think
- 8:05Speaker: some of the impetus behind tonight's episode is, you know,
- 8:10Speaker: being ready for the unexpected.
- 8:14Speaker: Yes.
- 8:15Speaker: Well, I mean, not to get too personal.
- 8:17Speaker: I mean, uh, so, you know, our, our primary host is, is out
- 8:20Speaker: today, but he did send us a picture of where he was having
- 8:23Speaker: dinner and he is going to be at In and Out burger.
- 8:26Speaker: So the tower could be
- 8:27Speaker: representing, you know, his
- 8:30Speaker: evening in the hotel room after
- 8:32Speaker: a night and, you know, going
- 8:34Speaker: animal style change to his his
- 8:39Speaker: gut biome.
- 8:41Speaker: Yeah.
- 8:42Speaker: Well, in and out, I'm pretty sure as delicious as it is, I'm
- 8:44Speaker: pretty sure it destroys all living things inside your gut.
- 8:48Speaker: So yeah, you know, and if you ever complain that they have
- 8:52Speaker: that they didn't cook your burger, they'll tell you we only
- 8:56Speaker: cook them medium.
- 8:57Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:00Speaker: So you're, you're getting some raw dog meat dog.
- 9:06Speaker: Anyway, no complaints here anyway.
- 9:08Speaker: Better than White Castle where
- 9:11Speaker: like the burger never touches
- 9:13Speaker: the grill.
- 9:14Speaker: Well, half of it.
- 9:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 9:16Speaker: You're right.
- 9:17Speaker: It's a good.
- 9:18Speaker: You know what?
- 9:19Speaker: I've got pictures of us in Kentucky smashing white castles.
- 9:23Speaker: So yep yep yep.
- 9:25Speaker: Both.
- 9:25Speaker: Not twenty eighteen.
- 9:27Speaker: It's okay.
- 9:31Speaker: So what are we talking about tonight?
- 9:33Speaker: Uh, Robert, I think portable masonry or portable education
- 9:38Speaker: was your requested topic.
- 9:42Speaker: Like what was going through your
- 9:44Speaker: head about, uh, you know what we
- 9:46Speaker: need to bring with us when we
- 9:47Speaker: travel?
- 9:49Speaker: So as somebody who travels around a lot to do
- 9:54Speaker: presentations, um, or to assist in degree work, I can't tell you
- 10:01Speaker: how many times there has been sort of a miscommunication about
- 10:06Speaker: what sort of technology the lodge has in house.
- 10:10Speaker: Um, or maybe, uh, they just don't have what they need to
- 10:18Speaker: facilitate a presentation.
- 10:21Speaker: Um, you know, all kind of different things.
- 10:23Speaker: You know, I'm thinking like everyday carry items that, you
- 10:26Speaker: know, I love EDC stuff.
- 10:28Speaker: Uh, somebody might come over to my, uh, you know, uh, Facebook
- 10:33Speaker: page and we might compare like, uh, you know, bag dump or pocket
- 10:39Speaker: dump, you know, what do you got?
- 10:40Speaker: You know, this cool pen that Spencer Hammond made?
- 10:42Speaker: It's made of brass and awesome
- 10:44Speaker: curled wood or, you know, uh, I
- 10:47Speaker: got a remarkable tablet, but I
- 10:49Speaker: never leave home without my
- 10:50Speaker: Moleskine and my, uh, regular
- 10:52Speaker: pen also, you know, just those
- 10:54Speaker: kind of quality items that you
- 10:55Speaker: always have to sort of save the
- 10:57Speaker: day.
- 10:58Speaker: And I think when I was going
- 11:00Speaker: through this, um, I had recently
- 11:03Speaker: gone to a lodge, uh, to do a
- 11:05Speaker: presentation, which this lodge
- 11:08Speaker: had never done presentations
- 11:10Speaker: like ever had anybody come in
- 11:11Speaker: before.
- 11:12Speaker: Uh, but they were like, yeah, we have a projector and a screen.
- 11:15Speaker: And I was like, oh, that's awesome.
- 11:17Speaker: Um, but they had never, you know, tested it or used it
- 11:22Speaker: before and nobody there knew how to use it.
- 11:24Speaker: So, um, I ended up having to
- 11:29Speaker: pass my iPad around to the seven
- 11:32Speaker: dudes who were there and show
- 11:35Speaker: them, you know, these
- 11:36Speaker: historical, you know, documents
- 11:37Speaker: or whatever.
- 11:38Speaker: And they were able to check them out.
- 11:39Speaker: But It's like those things or I don't know.
- 11:43Speaker: Have you ever been to a lodge?
- 11:45Speaker: And and you gotta, you gotta
- 11:48Speaker: plug in your laptop and you do
- 11:50Speaker: it.
- 11:51Speaker: But, but you go to plug it in
- 11:53Speaker: and you realize every outlet in
- 11:55Speaker: the joint is a two prong outlet
- 11:57Speaker: because they haven't updated
- 11:58Speaker: wiring.
- 11:59Speaker: Yeah.
- 12:00Speaker: Oh, no. And then if you're like some of us, you just ask them
- 12:07Speaker: for a pair of, you know, vise grips and you rip the grounding
- 12:11Speaker: plug off of your laptop charger and charge it anyway.
- 12:14Speaker: Um, or you carry a cheater, you got a little two to three prong
- 12:20Speaker: adapter in your glove box, you know, things like that.
- 12:24Speaker: Saving the day.
- 12:26Speaker: Portable education.
- 12:27Speaker: I think the best things ever was projectors.
- 12:32Speaker: I used to carry around this big honkin projector that uh.
- 12:40Speaker: I acquired from a previous job when they went out of business
- 12:45Speaker: and I went shopping.
- 12:47Speaker: Uh, but five finger discount.
- 12:50Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:50Speaker: So, I mean, it was this huge honking thing, you know, and the
- 12:53Speaker: lamp has been dying on it for like twenty years probably.
- 12:57Speaker: And now I think when we were at Ezekiel Bates at Masonic, maybe.
- 13:02Speaker: Oh, gosh.
- 13:03Speaker: A number of years ago, we had a booth there, and John and Jason
- 13:08Speaker: brought this like micro projector and it was awesome.
- 13:14Speaker: And that was so cool.
- 13:17Speaker: You know, the technology's gotten so small.
- 13:20Speaker: You just like, have, you know, you could have like a presenters
- 13:25Speaker: kit, you know?
- 13:27Speaker: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker: Thanks.
- 13:28Speaker: Patreon.
- 13:29Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:31Speaker: So I love that you brought this up because I think in all the
- 13:36Speaker: years that I've traveled masonically every single thing
- 13:40Speaker: that I've added to my my go bag.
- 13:42Speaker: My portable kit has all been
- 13:44Speaker: through mistakes or issues like
- 13:46Speaker: it was never thought of in
- 13:48Speaker: advance.
- 13:48Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 13:49Speaker: Like, I think the first time I went to, um, a lodge to present
- 13:55Speaker: and it was a, it was a out of town lodge, you know, it was, it
- 13:58Speaker: was a bit of a ways away and they were a bit rural and they
- 14:01Speaker: said they had a projector and a screen and I was super jazzed.
- 14:05Speaker: And, uh, I went with my laptop and, uh, they did have a
- 14:09Speaker: projector, but it was still, uh, you know, one of the old ones
- 14:12Speaker: with the pins.
- 14:13Speaker: Um, and they didn't have any HDMI.
- 14:15Speaker: And I'm like, I don't even have an adapter for that.
- 14:18Speaker: I was like, well, we're going to do hand puppets the rest of the
- 14:20Speaker: night because we're screwed.
- 14:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker: It was perfect for you because you, you talk with your hands.
- 14:25Speaker: I do, but like, no, no doubt.
- 14:30Speaker: I mean, I've heard of guys who have traveled to lodges just
- 14:33Speaker: like you, only to find that when the lodge was like, oh, yeah, we
- 14:36Speaker: got a projector.
- 14:38Speaker: They meant their slide projector, like the chunk.
- 14:41Speaker: Yes.
- 14:42Speaker: They were like, oh.
- 14:45Speaker: And we're talking about a guy
- 14:46Speaker: who like traveled from Indiana
- 14:49Speaker: to Jersey.
- 14:52Speaker: And so this thing that cost a
- 14:56Speaker: lodge a lot of money to bring
- 14:57Speaker: somebody out.
- 14:58Speaker: Um, yeah, you know, it was it's not ideal.
- 15:04Speaker: Um, I would not have wanted to be in that position.
- 15:07Speaker: It just because you feel like you can't offer the best
- 15:13Speaker: education you could or the best show, you know what I mean?
- 15:16Speaker: Um, you can't give a good presentation performance if if
- 15:20Speaker: you don't have the tools per se.
- 15:23Speaker: Um, but if you know your topic
- 15:25Speaker: well enough, I think most most
- 15:26Speaker: speakers that I know, um, can
- 15:30Speaker: manage without it, you know,
- 15:31Speaker: they can, they're subject matter
- 15:33Speaker: experts, they get up there and
- 15:35Speaker: they'll roll and you don't need
- 15:37Speaker: it.
- 15:37Speaker: Um, but, you know, I don't think.
- 15:42Speaker: Oh, sorry.
- 15:43Speaker: Go ahead Jason.
- 15:45Speaker: I was going to say, I think
- 15:46Speaker: we've been lucky in the sense
- 15:48Speaker: that like, we, we have been
- 15:53Speaker: afforded the opportunity to
- 15:55Speaker: travel and, and speak enough
- 15:58Speaker: that like, we've been able to
- 16:01Speaker: work a lot of the bumps out, um,
- 16:03Speaker: over time.
- 16:05Speaker: And so it's not a big deal.
- 16:07Speaker: Generally speaking, you know,
- 16:09Speaker: showing up to a lodge and does
- 16:11Speaker: not, not having that projector
- 16:13Speaker: there.
- 16:14Speaker: It's like, okay, we'll do this on the fly.
- 16:17Speaker: And hey, this forty five minute presentation is going to be ten
- 16:20Speaker: to fifteen because like, that's all I'm going to be able to hold
- 16:25Speaker: people's attention for.
- 16:27Speaker: It's not ideal, but it, but it works well, I think too.
- 16:31Speaker: I was actually going to I didn't
- 16:33Speaker: know you were going to say that,
- 16:34Speaker: but I'm actually going to
- 16:34Speaker: disagree with you a little bit,
- 16:35Speaker: because I've seen all of you
- 16:37Speaker: present.
- 16:38Speaker: And when there are presentations where, you know, you know, first
- 16:43Speaker: of all, nobody here, um, including John, are presenters
- 16:47Speaker: that actually read their slides.
- 16:48Speaker: Like you ever go to a presentation and you literally
- 16:50Speaker: see the person reading their slides to you.
- 16:52Speaker: And I'm like, I don't need you to do that, man, I could, I
- 16:54Speaker: could do that myself.
- 16:55Speaker: Um, but I think all of us,
- 16:59Speaker: especially y'all who have been
- 17:00Speaker: doing this longer, don't read
- 17:03Speaker: your slides.
- 17:04Speaker: And the slides are there more for aesthetics than for actual
- 17:07Speaker: content kind of thing.
- 17:08Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 17:09Speaker: And, and to that point, you can
- 17:11Speaker: deliver a presentation without
- 17:13Speaker: having slides.
- 17:13Speaker: I personally use slides not to read content.
- 17:16Speaker: I use it so people don't stare at me the entire time.
- 17:18Speaker: You know, just look at the TV or look at the projector.
- 17:21Speaker: I'll be over here jibber jabbering.
- 17:23Speaker: But it's to take the focus off of me.
- 17:25Speaker: Wasn't that the greatest part of Covid?
- 17:27Speaker: When we would present online
- 17:29Speaker: through Zoom, you could just go
- 17:31Speaker: camera off.
- 17:32Speaker: Yes.
- 17:33Speaker: Present and just use like a red dot or whatever to point at
- 17:37Speaker: stuff on the screen.
- 17:38Speaker: Yeah, it was a lot of good time, a lot of good time.
- 17:41Speaker: Yeah.
- 17:41Speaker: Um, but yeah, I use like, I try
- 17:46Speaker: to use slides for like
- 17:49Speaker: subconscious, like
- 17:50Speaker: reinforcement.
- 17:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 17:52Speaker: Right.
- 17:52Speaker: Like thematic.
- 17:54Speaker: It just kind of, you know, you, it makes you feel a certain way,
- 18:00Speaker: but you don't know that it's making it, making you do that.
- 18:05Speaker: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker: You know, it was many, many
- 18:08Speaker: years ago when, uh, I went to
- 18:12Speaker: like a train, the trainer when I
- 18:13Speaker: was working in the aircraft
- 18:16Speaker: maintenance.
- 18:17Speaker: And I remember, you know, and I'm just like, I was, you know,
- 18:24Speaker: I'm a smart guy.
- 18:24Speaker: Like I went to college and stuff
- 18:26Speaker: and got a fancy, you know,
- 18:29Speaker: Certificate.
- 18:31Speaker: But I was never like in debate club.
- 18:34Speaker: I was never like, I'm gonna get up here and pontificate to my
- 18:37Speaker: fellows, you know?
- 18:38Speaker: Um, and so when the opportunity came to go to this little
- 18:41Speaker: workshop that was like, hey, how to present or whatever.
- 18:44Speaker: I remember it like most of it
- 18:47Speaker: was just watching some Ted
- 18:50Speaker: talks.
- 18:51Speaker: And anytime that there were, uh,
- 18:55Speaker: visuals for the slides, it was
- 18:57Speaker: something that was related to
- 18:58Speaker: what was going on in the talk,
- 19:00Speaker: but really had no information on
- 19:04Speaker: it whatsoever.
- 19:04Speaker: If anything, it was used to make you, the presenter, move along.
- 19:13Speaker: Like, oh, that's the next thing I gotta talk about.
- 19:15Speaker: It helps you kind of keep track.
- 19:17Speaker: Um, and that's the way I've
- 19:18Speaker: always done my presentations,
- 19:20Speaker: right.
- 19:21Speaker: Socratic mind palace.
- 19:23Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker: Mhm.
- 19:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:25Speaker: For you.
- 19:26Speaker: Right.
- 19:26Speaker: The audience.
- 19:27Speaker: Hey.
- 19:27Speaker: we're giving away a secret here.
- 19:29Speaker: The audience thinks, hey, you
- 19:30Speaker: just put up some awesome slides,
- 19:32Speaker: um, for us to, to look at and,
- 19:34Speaker: and conceptualize what you're
- 19:35Speaker: talking about.
- 19:36Speaker: Yes.
- 19:38Speaker: But also it keeps us on track
- 19:40Speaker: because we're chatty Cathy's,
- 19:42Speaker: you know?
- 19:43Speaker: Indeed.
- 19:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker: So what's in your guys's?
- 19:47Speaker: Uh. Oh, man.
- 19:51Speaker: Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker: Kopinsky.
- 19:53Speaker: That's let's talk Pecha Kucha first.
- 19:55Speaker: All right.
- 19:56Speaker: We can look all right.
- 19:57Speaker: Deviation short attention spans.
- 20:00Speaker: Right.
- 20:00Speaker: We covered that last week.
- 20:01Speaker: But yes.
- 20:03Speaker: Yeah yeah.
- 20:03Speaker: What's what's Pecha Kucha guys besides a funny name.
- 20:10Speaker: I was on mute.
- 20:11Speaker: Uh, didn't Chad actually come on the show and explain that to us?
- 20:15Speaker: Mhm.
- 20:15Speaker: Yes.
- 20:16Speaker: Yeah he did.
- 20:18Speaker: We did an episode on it, I believe.
- 20:20Speaker: Mhm.
- 20:21Speaker: And I think he did his explanation in Pecha Kucha.
- 20:24Speaker: Absolutely.
- 20:25Speaker: But yeah, it was meta.
- 20:27Speaker: It was it was very meta.
- 20:28Speaker: Um, but yeah, I mean, in, in general, it's twenty slides, I
- 20:32Speaker: think it's 20s per slide.
- 20:34Speaker: Um, your talk is less than seven minutes and it should be mostly
- 20:39Speaker: visual and it.
- 20:42Speaker: Yep.
- 20:43Speaker: It's Japanese in origin.
- 20:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 20:44Speaker: And the slides just move chit chat on your own.
- 20:49Speaker: So so like they're just auto.
- 20:51Speaker: So when they move the you better catch up.
- 20:55Speaker: Uh, it's a good time though, and it's a lot of fun.
- 21:01Speaker: Um, yeah.
- 21:02Speaker: And so in our episode on
- 21:04Speaker: Pechakucha, we, uh, we had each
- 21:08Speaker: host do slides for one of the
- 21:09Speaker: other hosts.
- 21:11Speaker: And so you came into this not knowing what the slides were
- 21:16Speaker: going to be, what they were going to look like, what they
- 21:19Speaker: were going to say.
- 21:20Speaker: And, uh.
- 21:24Speaker: It was fun trying to make other people squirm.
- 21:28Speaker: It was a lot of fun.
- 21:29Speaker: Yeah.
- 21:32Speaker: So EDC, for the lodge's first time I was out somewhere.
- 21:38Speaker: I think we were at Ezekiel Bates.
- 21:40Speaker: I was getting ready to present, and I didn't have what I needed
- 21:43Speaker: to connect to their projector.
- 21:45Speaker: And Joe pulled out ye olde bag of dongles.
- 21:52Speaker: The bag of dongles?
- 21:54Speaker: Yeah, not just not just his dongle, but his bag of dongles.
- 21:58Speaker: That's right, ye old bag of dongles.
- 22:01Speaker: I still has it.
- 22:03Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker: You had every single adapter known to man in there.
- 22:06Speaker: You're like, what?
- 22:07Speaker: What year is that, Mac?
- 22:09Speaker: Boop boop boop boop boop.
- 22:10Speaker: I got you.
- 22:11Speaker: Oh, wait.
- 22:12Speaker: Nope.
- 22:13Speaker: You need this one.
- 22:14Speaker: Yep.
- 22:15Speaker: I think you even have, like, a FireWire adapter.
- 22:17Speaker: And that was crazy.
- 22:18Speaker: I think I did, yeah.
- 22:20Speaker: But, uh.
- 22:22Speaker: Yeah.
- 22:23Speaker: You guys have any suggestions?
- 22:27Speaker: Well, you stole mine because mine was the bag of dongles,
- 22:31Speaker: which I've, I have I have tightened up a little bit, uh,
- 22:35Speaker: with the advent of Usb-c.
- 22:37Speaker: Um, you know, I have, yeah, like the, uh, serial port dongles and
- 22:41Speaker: stuff like that.
- 22:42Speaker: Um, those are gone, but yeah,
- 22:44Speaker: definitely have lots of dongles
- 22:46Speaker: to plug into Ethernet or to plug
- 22:48Speaker: into whatever type of projector
- 22:50Speaker: they have.
- 22:51Speaker: I now bring us, um, what's it, what's the VGA adapter now?
- 22:56Speaker: Because I know there's someplace I'm going to go that has a
- 22:58Speaker: twenty year old projector.
- 23:00Speaker: Um, so yeah, not, not stealing
- 23:02Speaker: your answer, but yeah, my bag of
- 23:04Speaker: dongles always travels with me
- 23:05Speaker: regardless.
- 23:08Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:09Speaker: So I would say, uh, oh, go ahead.
- 23:12Speaker: No, no, you.
- 23:14Speaker: So I would say, um, laser
- 23:17Speaker: pointer, you can get the, the
- 23:20Speaker: combo laser pointer slide
- 23:22Speaker: Advancer.
- 23:23Speaker: Um, I think that is super
- 23:27Speaker: important because usually like
- 23:30Speaker: where you set your laptop up is
- 23:32Speaker: not like super convenient for
- 23:36Speaker: the space you're going to be
- 23:37Speaker: talking from.
- 23:38Speaker: And I like to move around when I talk.
- 23:43Speaker: So it's really helpful.
- 23:45Speaker: Yes.
- 23:46Speaker: Question.
- 23:46Speaker: Martinez.
- 23:47Speaker: Doctor Richards.
- 23:48Speaker: Um, yeah.
- 23:50Speaker: And I think this is a me problem because I, I, I try to carry
- 23:54Speaker: laser pointer slash slide movers as often as I can.
- 23:58Speaker: Um, I end up buying like five or six of them at a time because I
- 24:01Speaker: can't tell you how many times I've left them at the lodge that
- 24:04Speaker: I was talking at.
- 24:06Speaker: And then I come home and all I
- 24:07Speaker: have is that little USB adapter
- 24:09Speaker: that's still stuck in my
- 24:10Speaker: computer.
- 24:10Speaker: But the, the, the, uh, you know, the red light is gone.
- 24:15Speaker: So how do you keep that from happening?
- 24:20Speaker: You wear Velcro gloves and you
- 24:22Speaker: attach the laser pointer to your
- 24:24Speaker: hand.
- 24:25Speaker: Notice that when you're talking.
- 24:27Speaker: No. Um, it's just one of my things in my mental checklist.
- 24:31Speaker: Like I'm like, okay, I need to
- 24:34Speaker: check for this, this, this, this
- 24:35Speaker: and this.
- 24:36Speaker: Okay.
- 24:36Speaker: I'm not missing anything critical.
- 24:39Speaker: I can go home now.
- 24:40Speaker: I suck at it.
- 24:42Speaker: Yeah, I, for me, it's always, uh, I was going to say, yeah, a
- 24:47Speaker: dedicated presentation clicker with, with the, uh, spare
- 24:50Speaker: battery is a good one.
- 24:52Speaker: Um, I forget the hell out of spare batteries.
- 24:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker: Like me too.
- 24:59Speaker: Or plenty of times where I'm like, aw, it's not working.
- 25:03Speaker: You you have the batteries on
- 25:05Speaker: you and you've always had them
- 25:07Speaker: on you.
- 25:08Speaker: And when it comes time to
- 25:09Speaker: change, those are super expired
- 25:12Speaker: and dead.
- 25:13Speaker: So now you're in a whole nother ball of wax.
- 25:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 25:16Speaker: Um. Oh, man.
- 25:20Speaker: What about a disaster flash drive?
- 25:23Speaker: Like, have your presentation in, like, three different formats on
- 25:29Speaker: a flash drive so that you have like a PDF version, a PowerPoint
- 25:34Speaker: version, and a keynote version.
- 25:36Speaker: And then like you could just some smart TVs, you just plug it
- 25:39Speaker: in and scroll through the PDF if you need to.
- 25:42Speaker: Oh, I've not gone that far.
- 25:45Speaker: I have started to carry a, um,
- 25:48Speaker: you know, a little portable hard
- 25:50Speaker: drive with my presentation on it
- 25:52Speaker: because sometimes you'll go to a
- 25:54Speaker: lodge and they've already set up
- 25:55Speaker: for you.
- 25:55Speaker: They have a laptop, they have a TV, they have projector.
- 25:58Speaker: It's all ready to go.
- 25:59Speaker: So you don't have to set up your
- 26:00Speaker: own gear and equipment and
- 26:01Speaker: stuff.
- 26:02Speaker: Um, but they don't have internet or you can't send an email to
- 26:05Speaker: yourself or that kind of thing.
- 26:06Speaker: So you end up having.
- 26:07Speaker: But yeah, that's next level, Robert with putting it in PDF
- 26:11Speaker: and, and keynote for the Mac nerds for sure.
- 26:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 26:16Speaker: well, the PowerPoint thing I
- 26:17Speaker: learned actually from, uh, I
- 26:20Speaker: can't say his name on, on, uh,
- 26:22Speaker: on the show because he'll throw
- 26:23Speaker: a fit.
- 26:24Speaker: But a noted Masonic scholar, uh, is always using PowerPoint.
- 26:29Speaker: And I'm like, why do you do that?
- 26:31Speaker: And he was like, it's just so compatible.
- 26:35Speaker: Uh, actually in PDF, not
- 26:36Speaker: PowerPoint, always presenting on
- 26:38Speaker: a, on a PDF file, uh, that he
- 26:42Speaker: just scrolls through and, um, it
- 26:44Speaker: seems so bizarre to me, but it
- 26:47Speaker: works and it works on TVs and
- 26:49Speaker: everything else.
- 26:50Speaker: So it's a good option.
- 26:54Speaker: Yeah.
- 26:58Speaker: What about so.
- 26:59Speaker: Oh go ahead.
- 27:00Speaker: I've started trying to make sure that I either bring or have
- 27:05Speaker: access to a Bluetooth speaker.
- 27:08Speaker: Mhm.
- 27:10Speaker: That's glorious.
- 27:14Speaker: But that is I mean, that's whenever I do my deaf
- 27:17Speaker: presentation because there's so much audio in that.
- 27:20Speaker: Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker: That's and that's clutch.
- 27:23Speaker: Well, so the other thing too, I
- 27:25Speaker: think is to remember is you got
- 27:26Speaker: to have the tech for what you
- 27:31Speaker: do.
- 27:31Speaker: Um, and I've told a million times people like if they go see
- 27:35Speaker: your presentation on, on like the deaf presentation, it's not
- 27:38Speaker: really a presentation as, as it is, it's a performance.
- 27:43Speaker: You know what I mean?
- 27:44Speaker: Like you do such a great job with that one.
- 27:45Speaker: And, uh, the audio that you put together for it is really like,
- 27:51Speaker: it's an experience.
- 27:52Speaker: You know, I often think about it.
- 27:54Speaker: Um, have you guys ever been to a planetarium?
- 27:58Speaker: And they, when they do, like, so
- 28:01Speaker: years ago when we lived in
- 28:03Speaker: California, um, I was a, I don't
- 28:06Speaker: know, like one of those yearly
- 28:07Speaker: donor people who donated to the
- 28:09Speaker: Griffith Observatory.
- 28:12Speaker: Um, and every year we would go, um, uh, and go to the, the thing
- 28:19Speaker: where they basically like you're in the dome and they show the
- 28:22Speaker: cool light show and it's like the dawn of man.
- 28:25Speaker: And throughout the whole thing, there's this like floating orb
- 28:30Speaker: and there's a guy who like, narrates this whole thing.
- 28:32Speaker: And when the lights come up, you
- 28:34Speaker: see he's been holding the sun
- 28:35Speaker: the whole time in his hand and
- 28:37Speaker: been narrating.
- 28:38Speaker: And it's just such a awesome performance.
- 28:41Speaker: And when I saw you do that death presentation, I always think
- 28:44Speaker: back to the Griffith Observatory because it was just so on point.
- 28:50Speaker: So yeah, good Bluetooth speaker.
- 28:54Speaker: Heck yeah.
- 28:57Speaker: I think, uh, one thing that I love to bring, but I always
- 29:00Speaker: forget is a timer.
- 29:04Speaker: Oh, so like this one is simple,
- 29:06Speaker: you know, you just like tip it
- 29:07Speaker: over on whatever, um, Um, time
- 29:11Speaker: limit you want like thirty,
- 29:13Speaker: twenty five, fifteen kind of
- 29:14Speaker: thing.
- 29:15Speaker: And you just tip it over and it counts down.
- 29:17Speaker: Um, or it's customizable too, but holy cow, I can't believe
- 29:21Speaker: this is still charged.
- 29:23Speaker: That's wild.
- 29:25Speaker: Anyway.
- 29:27Speaker: Yeah, you can see it's counting down the three.
- 29:29Speaker: And if I tap the bottom it'll like reset.
- 29:32Speaker: Uh, but anyway, a good timer, right?
- 29:35Speaker: Because one time, uh, John and I were in North Carolina at a
- 29:40Speaker: lodge and I presented first, and I think I presented for about an
- 29:44Speaker: hour and twenty minutes.
- 29:47Speaker: Oh, I had no script, just slides.
- 29:51Speaker: And they were like, yeah, just go to town.
- 29:52Speaker: And so I did.
- 29:53Speaker: And then I told John, John's like, well, and I was like, no,
- 29:58Speaker: dude, don't shorten yours.
- 30:01Speaker: You do all of it.
- 30:03Speaker: Do it.
- 30:04Speaker: We were there like hours.
- 30:06Speaker: It was awesome.
- 30:07Speaker: And those guys knew what they
- 30:08Speaker: were getting into, but I could
- 30:11Speaker: have been better had I had a
- 30:13Speaker: timer.
- 30:14Speaker: Um, I've gotten to.
- 30:16Speaker: I've been an Apple Watch person
- 30:17Speaker: for at least four or five years
- 30:18Speaker: now.
- 30:19Speaker: Um, so as soon as I start, I'll just start a timer on my watch
- 30:22Speaker: for fifteen minutes and then thirty minutes, um, just to see
- 30:25Speaker: if I'm on pace because when I, when I do PowerPoints, I've got
- 30:29Speaker: the, um, you know, how you guys see the presenter view.
- 30:32Speaker: Um, and it's got the clock on there, you know, it tells you
- 30:35Speaker: how long you're going.
- 30:36Speaker: I'm like, oh crap, I've been talking for this long, so I'll
- 30:38Speaker: use that because I can, I can ramble or I've noticed too.
- 30:42Speaker: And I think you guys have as well when you get a question and
- 30:45Speaker: then you go off into this weird tangent for twenty minutes, that
- 30:48Speaker: has absolutely nothing to do with your presentation.
- 30:51Speaker: And it's like, oh crap, we need
- 30:52Speaker: to get back to this because
- 30:53Speaker: there's twenty more minutes of
- 30:54Speaker: stuff left.
- 30:55Speaker: So yeah, for real, my, my Apple Watch has been a lifesaver.
- 31:01Speaker: I will usually, um, start like a stopwatch on my iPhone, and then
- 31:09Speaker: I will forget to look at it until I'm done.
- 31:15Speaker: Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker: That's, uh.
- 31:18Speaker: That sounds look down.
- 31:19Speaker: I'll be like, oh, whoops.
- 31:23Speaker: I've done similar stuff where I've just never started my timer
- 31:26Speaker: or brought it even out of my bag or like I've brought it with and
- 31:29Speaker: it was dead, which was why I was so damn surprised when this
- 31:33Speaker: thing like turned on when I tipped it over.
- 31:36Speaker: I like, dude, I haven't charged this thing in a year.
- 31:38Speaker: It still has half a charge anyway.
- 31:41Speaker: Um, what about a we haven't talked about credentials.
- 31:49Speaker: You guys ever like need?
- 31:50Speaker: Yes.
- 31:52Speaker: Like a like your dues card or like a letter of introduction,
- 31:56Speaker: those kind of things.
- 31:58Speaker: Or like my grand lodge is, is,
- 32:02Speaker: is one that's really sort of,
- 32:04Speaker: uh.
- 32:05Speaker: Um, libertarian in that it lets
- 32:09Speaker: lodges do what they want to do,
- 32:10Speaker: but they do like it when we
- 32:13Speaker: follow protocol.
- 32:14Speaker: And so anytime I travel out of
- 32:15Speaker: state, I try to call up my grand
- 32:18Speaker: secretary.
- 32:19Speaker: And Frank is awesome.
- 32:20Speaker: And he's like, yep, here you go.
- 32:22Speaker: He's a couple.
- 32:23Speaker: Uh, he'll send me one in the mail and then he sends me a PDF
- 32:28Speaker: of it and I go, well, what if I need, like, I'm doing like
- 32:32Speaker: twelve trips this year?
- 32:34Speaker: And he's like, then print it twelve times.
- 32:39Speaker: Okay, boss.
- 32:40Speaker: So, uh, you know, they're really cool about that.
- 32:43Speaker: So yeah, I'll print them off, uh, for the year that I have
- 32:46Speaker: them and I, I put them inside my dues card wallet and that goes
- 32:49Speaker: in my travel bag for sure.
- 32:53Speaker: Uh, the one always make sure I have deuce cards handy.
- 32:58Speaker: Yeah.
- 32:59Speaker: I mean, the one time I did go
- 33:00Speaker: ahead, Robert, I was just going
- 33:02Speaker: to say the one time I didn't
- 33:03Speaker: have it with us, we were at
- 33:05Speaker: Acacia.
- 33:06Speaker: You guys were doing a second degree, and I got pulled into
- 33:09Speaker: the ante room and I had to do the testo because, uh, I didn't
- 33:13Speaker: have my dues card.
- 33:15Speaker: So every time I've been asked
- 33:17Speaker: for my dues card, I didn't have
- 33:19Speaker: it.
- 33:19Speaker: How crazy is that?
- 33:21Speaker: So yeah, that is literally the only in, in my, um, my grown up
- 33:27Speaker: wallet, not my Masonic wallet.
- 33:28Speaker: The only thing I keep in there is my, my Blue Lodge juice card.
- 33:32Speaker: Um, I've had to use it a couple times in the US just because.
- 33:35Speaker: Oh go ahead.
- 33:36Speaker: Sorry.
- 33:37Speaker: I will say now that both of my
- 33:39Speaker: grand jurisdictions are in grand
- 33:41Speaker: view.
- 33:43Speaker: I don't carry my dues card on me nearly as much as I used to.
- 33:46Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker: That's fair.
- 33:48Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker: We have it's nice.
- 33:51Speaker: We still use, uh, we're on Maury or M2 group kind of thing.
- 33:56Speaker: Um, and Amity kind of has a, a way into that and check status
- 34:02Speaker: like real time.
- 34:04Speaker: So that's really nice, but it's
- 34:07Speaker: still not like sanctioned as
- 34:08Speaker: official.
- 34:10Speaker: Yeah.
- 34:12Speaker: Um, I just got to deliver a delivery of some wings, so.
- 34:16Speaker: Ooh.
- 34:16Speaker: To all my people.
- 34:19Speaker: Wait.
- 34:20Speaker: What's up, shorty face?
- 34:21Speaker: We're live bro.
- 34:23Speaker: To every single person that's watching this.
- 34:25Speaker: Yeah, it's going to be on YouTube forever.
- 34:27Speaker: All the people.
- 34:28Speaker: All right.
- 34:28Speaker: Go on.
- 34:29Speaker: Skedaddle.
- 34:30Speaker: Sigma Alpha, go!
- 34:31Speaker: Oh my God.
- 34:33Speaker: All right.
- 34:34Speaker: My dad got garlic parmesan wings.
- 34:36Speaker: I ate half of them.
- 34:37Speaker: He has four left.
- 34:38Speaker: Okay, bye.
- 34:39Speaker: Flavor.
- 34:39Speaker: Good flavor.
- 34:41Speaker: What is that?
- 34:41Speaker: Papa John's.
- 34:42Speaker: Papa John's.
- 34:42Speaker: Clara.
- 34:46Speaker: Um, what was I going to say?
- 34:49Speaker: Um, while he's doing that, um, I did when I had, when I traveled
- 34:53Speaker: overseas, um or out of the country when I traveled to
- 34:57Speaker: Canada and UK, I did have to get a traveling certificate.
- 35:01Speaker: Um, so those are required because they don't do DOS cards.
- 35:05Speaker: Um. Thank you.
- 35:07Speaker: Thanks, Juan.
- 35:08Speaker: Juan.
- 35:09Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:10Speaker: Uh, I John's not here, and
- 35:13Speaker: everything goes to crap on my
- 35:15Speaker: end.
- 35:15Speaker: Sorry.
- 35:16Speaker: The tower, baby.
- 35:17Speaker: The tower.
- 35:17Speaker: The tower!
- 35:18Speaker: Oh my God.
- 35:19Speaker: Right.
- 35:20Speaker: Coming for you.
- 35:23Speaker: That is too funny.
- 35:24Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:26Speaker: Uh. Uh, you know who I know does this one all the time is James
- 35:33Speaker: Buckhorn, and I think he just has a massive, um, dongle.
- 35:44Speaker: He has, like, a, an affinity for power banks.
- 35:50Speaker: Dude is obsessed with the amount
- 35:52Speaker: of, like, watts and power these
- 35:55Speaker: things have and how fast they
- 35:57Speaker: can transfer.
- 35:58Speaker: So a high capacity, slim Power bank.
- 36:00Speaker: That's a good option to have on you.
- 36:02Speaker: I try to keep one also, but, uh, I'll tell you right now, if you
- 36:08Speaker: meet James Buckhorn, I bet he's got no less than three.
- 36:14Speaker: And he probably will tell you that one of them could start his
- 36:17Speaker: truck if he needed it.
- 36:18Speaker: I we, him and him.
- 36:19Speaker: And I have discussed this.
- 36:20Speaker: I don't know how he's legally allowed to get on planes with
- 36:23Speaker: the number of power banks he has, because you can only bring
- 36:26Speaker: up to a certain amount of, of, of what's on the plane.
- 36:30Speaker: And I'm like, how do you bring all of these?
- 36:31Speaker: Like, he could literally power a
- 36:33Speaker: small rural town for a week, a
- 36:35Speaker: flux capacitor.
- 36:36Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:39Speaker: Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker: Power makes a good, good idea.
- 36:43Speaker: I got one.
- 36:45Speaker: Did people forget all the time a little notebook?
- 36:50Speaker: Mhm.
- 36:51Speaker: Why would you bring a notebook?
- 36:53Speaker: Well, I started bringing little tiny ones.
- 36:55Speaker: I think I saw one that that
- 36:57Speaker: Robert had, and I was like, oh,
- 36:58Speaker: cool.
- 36:58Speaker: So then I bought like a twenty pack of little small leather
- 37:00Speaker: bound notebooks that I can keep in my coat.
- 37:02Speaker: Um, because a lot of times I will get asked questions that I
- 37:07Speaker: don't have the answer to right there on the spot.
- 37:08Speaker: And you always say the thing, well, I'll look into it and I'll
- 37:11Speaker: get back to you later.
- 37:12Speaker: And half the time it sounds like you're begging someone.
- 37:15Speaker: But if you have a notebook, you can write that question down.
- 37:17Speaker: Whether you're giving or listening to a presentation and
- 37:21Speaker: go back to it later and not leave that person hanging.
- 37:24Speaker: So I do like that.
- 37:28Speaker: Yeah, that is that is a clutch one.
- 37:30Speaker: That's the thing.
- 37:31Speaker: Like I always have, I try to
- 37:32Speaker: have, I used to have like a
- 37:34Speaker: nicer, you know, Moleskine I
- 37:36Speaker: used to buy, but I can't justify
- 37:39Speaker: the expense on uh, like a bound
- 37:42Speaker: notebook.
- 37:43Speaker: So I do like Moleskines, but I
- 37:44Speaker: buy they're just the cash books
- 37:46Speaker: they have like, you know,
- 37:47Speaker: perforated pages.
- 37:49Speaker: Um, they're terrible.
- 37:53Speaker: Sorry, dad joke.
- 37:54Speaker: Um, anyway, good solid paper.
- 37:58Speaker: Uh, make sure you got a good pen.
- 38:00Speaker: Nice, uh, nice pen.
- 38:02Speaker: You know, you will meet so many Masons when you, like.
- 38:06Speaker: Go when they, like, go to hand you like a BIC and you're like,
- 38:09Speaker: nope, got my own.
- 38:10Speaker: And you go to sign the register and they're like, what?
- 38:13Speaker: Yeah.
- 38:13Speaker: Like, uh, is it Tyler?
- 38:16Speaker: Um, from the National Masonic Memorial?
- 38:23Speaker: Is it named Tyler?
- 38:24Speaker: Young guy who works there?
- 38:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker: Tyler van.
- 38:29Speaker: Nice.
- 38:30Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:31Speaker: Nice.
- 38:31Speaker: Yeah, that dude knows pens like you would not believe.
- 38:35Speaker: Oh, yeah.
- 38:37Speaker: He does.
- 38:39Speaker: So he he's one, you know, you got a good pen on you.
- 38:42Speaker: He'll be all in.
- 38:48Speaker: And we have bros who actually make amazing pens, uh, that you
- 38:54Speaker: can keep for a lifetime.
- 38:56Speaker: Um, I know I have, I have two
- 38:57Speaker: pens from Brother Spencer, um,
- 39:01Speaker: in Illinois.
- 39:02Speaker: Handmade pens and they are absolutely amazing.
- 39:07Speaker: I have a couple hand-turned ones as well.
- 39:10Speaker: One of which is made out of acacia wood.
- 39:14Speaker: That's sweet.
- 39:16Speaker: Gotta love the symbology behind that.
- 39:18Speaker: Mhm.
- 39:21Speaker: Ooh.
- 39:22Speaker: You guys ever go to you guys ever go to grand communication
- 39:26Speaker: and forget your apron?
- 39:29Speaker: No.
- 39:30Speaker: Damn.
- 39:31Speaker: No.
- 39:32Speaker: No. Well, I do.
- 39:35Speaker: So you can be a chump and walk in and grab one of those goofy
- 39:39Speaker: paper aprons they give out.
- 39:42Speaker: Ooh.
- 39:43Speaker: Oh, that's a nice one.
- 39:44Speaker: That's nice.
- 39:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker: Mine's in my bag upstairs.
- 39:49Speaker: Well, yes, but Robert, I would
- 39:52Speaker: say Um, I'm kind of half lying
- 39:56Speaker: because I think for the seven
- 39:59Speaker: years that I had to go to annual
- 40:02Speaker: communication, our lodge would
- 40:04Speaker: bring our entire apron case
- 40:06Speaker: down.
- 40:06Speaker: So I always had an apron to wear.
- 40:09Speaker: Um, but yes, we do have the, the
- 40:11Speaker: really fun paper aprons, um as
- 40:14Speaker: well.
- 40:14Speaker: They're, they're kind of scary to look at.
- 40:16Speaker: They're literally like throw away barbecue napkins.
- 40:20Speaker: But, um, so I went over to, I
- 40:23Speaker: was lucky McCoy a supply was
- 40:25Speaker: there and they had like these
- 40:28Speaker: real basic, um, like rayon look,
- 40:33Speaker: silk look alikes, sort of white
- 40:35Speaker: aprons.
- 40:36Speaker: And they were like five dollars.
- 40:38Speaker: So I bought one and just, I keep it rolled up and it's at the
- 40:40Speaker: bottom of my bag just in case.
- 40:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 40:46Speaker: You guys ever been to a lodge
- 40:47Speaker: that's like, bring your own
- 40:49Speaker: apron because they don't have
- 40:50Speaker: them.
- 40:50Speaker: Mhm.
- 40:51Speaker: Mhm.
- 40:51Speaker: Mhm.
- 40:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 40:52Speaker: I will, I will, especially if I'm driving.
- 40:55Speaker: I will bring my apron case.
- 40:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 40:58Speaker: Aprons.
- 41:00Speaker: That's solid.
- 41:03Speaker: Let's see what else we said.
- 41:08Speaker: Uh, we got the flash drives.
- 41:11Speaker: The bag of dongles.
- 41:14Speaker: Oh, I got one.
- 41:16Speaker: A big bag of candy with really crinkly wrappers.
- 41:20Speaker: Oh, yeah.
- 41:21Speaker: Yes, for handing out to everybody.
- 41:24Speaker: Yes!
- 41:25Speaker: King.
- 41:26Speaker: Yeah, bro.
- 41:26Speaker: You got Williams special?
- 41:28Speaker: Yeah.
- 41:30Speaker: Uh, Bob's.
- 41:31Speaker: Why do people love those things?
- 41:33Speaker: You just literally.
- 41:34Speaker: There's a guy who comes to my
- 41:35Speaker: lodge and before every meeting,
- 41:37Speaker: he comes up to me and he hands
- 41:38Speaker: me an individually wrapped
- 41:39Speaker: lifesaver lime.
- 41:41Speaker: Every time I got better, I like lime, you know, this dude.
- 41:47Speaker: So, um, brother Chris, the guy from Boston.
- 41:50Speaker: Remember my lodge?
- 41:51Speaker: Yep.
- 41:52Speaker: Yes.
- 41:53Speaker: Um, he always has.
- 41:55Speaker: And he always hands me a
- 41:56Speaker: werther's original when he gets
- 41:58Speaker: there.
- 41:59Speaker: And it's in the little gold wrapper.
- 42:00Speaker: And I'm like, yeah, I'm so excited for it.
- 42:03Speaker: But I opened it.
- 42:05Speaker: Opened Werther's original baby.
- 42:07Speaker: Oh my God.
- 42:08Speaker: That's freaking awesome.
- 42:10Speaker: I love that he does that.
- 42:12Speaker: It would just be weird to go to
- 42:13Speaker: lodge and not get a lime
- 42:15Speaker: lifesaver.
- 42:16Speaker: So yeah, it'll make me sad one day, you know?
- 42:22Speaker: So that'll be in my go.
- 42:23Speaker: It'll be, you know, my portable education bag, right?
- 42:25Speaker: I'll have a life savers to give away.
- 42:29Speaker: Um.
- 42:30Speaker: Ooh.
- 42:32Speaker: Do you guys ever, like, bring a pin present from your master or
- 42:35Speaker: your grand lodge to the lodge where you're going?
- 42:39Speaker: That's always solid.
- 42:42Speaker: Yep.
- 42:43Speaker: I used to forget them all the time.
- 42:44Speaker: Um, and then Illinois struck these education, uh, pins.
- 42:49Speaker: And we had a very limited supply
- 42:50Speaker: because, you know, pins are
- 42:51Speaker: expensive and education gets no
- 42:53Speaker: budget.
- 42:54Speaker: But, um, so recently, uh, a really awesome brother, Mark
- 42:59Speaker: Sinek, um, he made these Masonic education pins that just have
- 43:04Speaker: like a diploma with a collegiate hat and it just says Masonic
- 43:09Speaker: education and a little Latin phrase at the bottom.
- 43:12Speaker: And he just gave me like a handful.
- 43:14Speaker: And I love taking those with me
- 43:15Speaker: and giving them to the lodge
- 43:18Speaker: education officer.
- 43:19Speaker: Um, and, you know, make it a
- 43:21Speaker: point to say, who's your lodge
- 43:24Speaker: education officer?
- 43:25Speaker: Right.
- 43:25Speaker: And whoever it is, I'll give them the pin.
- 43:28Speaker: And then I just tell everybody, like, no worshipful master
- 43:33Speaker: doesn't get anything this time.
- 43:35Speaker: This is for the educator.
- 43:38Speaker: But a lot of times the, you
- 43:39Speaker: know, de facto educator is the
- 43:41Speaker: master.
- 43:41Speaker: So, uh, they will get the pin.
- 43:44Speaker: But I, yeah, I actually, I have.
- 43:46Speaker: I keep a copious amount of lapel pins in my apron case.
- 43:50Speaker: Um, and I actually, for the last few years have been using them
- 43:54Speaker: as, uh, I'll ask trivia questions during presentations
- 43:57Speaker: sometimes and I'll use those as like, hey, who got that right?
- 44:00Speaker: Throw them a pin.
- 44:01Speaker: You did that at my, at my lodge recently.
- 44:05Speaker: Yeah, that was awesome.
- 44:08Speaker: I think, uh, thank you cards.
- 44:12Speaker: I like to have a few thank you cards on hand.
- 44:14Speaker: I like to have a couple sympathy cards in my bag.
- 44:17Speaker: Also in my briefcase, because I
- 44:20Speaker: don't know about you guys, but
- 44:21Speaker: I've been to lodges where
- 44:22Speaker: they're like, oh, let's send a
- 44:23Speaker: card.
- 44:23Speaker: And the guy's like, oh, I don't have one, but I'll send one.
- 44:26Speaker: And I'll be like, wait, I have one.
- 44:28Speaker: And you can all sign it now and you can have it.
- 44:32Speaker: That is a hard flex.
- 44:33Speaker: I like that.
- 44:34Speaker: Nice.
- 44:35Speaker: Well, you know, I'm a lot of secretary for for organizations,
- 44:37Speaker: which is not a lot compared to some out there.
- 44:40Speaker: Like, you know, we're in the
- 44:42Speaker: Iron Throne, but should you be
- 44:44Speaker: saying that too loudly and too
- 44:45Speaker: publicly.
- 44:47Speaker: Yeah.
- 44:48Speaker: Listen, people know I'm a great secretary.
- 44:54Speaker: You know, I'm good at my job.
- 44:55Speaker: So it happens, but I. Yeah.
- 45:02Speaker: I think Secretary secretly loved being secretaries, I don't.
- 45:05Speaker: Everybody's like, oh ho ho!
- 45:07Speaker: For eternity.
- 45:09Speaker: Get out of here.
- 45:10Speaker: We love it.
- 45:12Speaker: Here's another thing that, uh,
- 45:15Speaker: that I made sure I bring
- 45:17Speaker: microfiber cleaning cloth for my
- 45:20Speaker: glasses.
- 45:21Speaker: Oh, yes.
- 45:25Speaker: How many times do you go to clean your glasses with, like,
- 45:27Speaker: your tie or something?
- 45:28Speaker: If you're wearing a tie and it just makes it worse.
- 45:31Speaker: Yeah.
- 45:32Speaker: I refuse to do that.
- 45:33Speaker: I have these, in fact, I just
- 45:35Speaker: got new glasses because I left
- 45:36Speaker: my old glasses in California
- 45:38Speaker: because I'm stupid and, um, I
- 45:41Speaker: asked for.
- 45:42Speaker: They literally gave me a handful of brand new microfiber, like
- 45:45Speaker: twenty of them.
- 45:46Speaker: They just threw them in the bag.
- 45:47Speaker: I was like, cool.
- 45:47Speaker: So I've got them everywhere now.
- 45:50Speaker: Nice.
- 45:51Speaker: That is.
- 45:52Speaker: Yeah, it's the little things, right?
- 45:53Speaker: It's just these little things that the, the smallest
- 45:56Speaker: inconvenience, but there are huge inconvenience when you,
- 45:59Speaker: when you need them.
- 46:00Speaker: Right.
- 46:01Speaker: Um, it's like you don't think
- 46:03Speaker: about your glasses very often,
- 46:04Speaker: but I tell you what, you can't
- 46:06Speaker: get away from them if there's a
- 46:08Speaker: smudge right in the middle of
- 46:09Speaker: them.
- 46:10Speaker: That's true.
- 46:11Speaker: I mean, like, do I have glaucoma?
- 46:13Speaker: Right.
- 46:14Speaker: And, you know, just, you know, you kissed your wife or
- 46:16Speaker: something and like you got or the cheese on your glasses.
- 46:20Speaker: Yeah.
- 46:20Speaker: You what?
- 46:22Speaker: You know, know that schmutz.
- 46:25Speaker: Yeah.
- 46:25Speaker: The schmutz.
- 46:27Speaker: You get the schmutz on the jammy jam.
- 46:29Speaker: Oh, see, I just did it.
- 46:33Speaker: Then you gotta sit here and you
- 46:34Speaker: gotta fiddle with the damn
- 46:36Speaker: things.
- 46:37Speaker: I hate glasses anyway.
- 46:41Speaker: Yeah, but we're getting too old for Lasik.
- 46:44Speaker: Are we, though?
- 46:45Speaker: Alex powers?
- 46:47Speaker: Alex Powers is getting Lasik.
- 46:49Speaker: Mhm.
- 46:51Speaker: You probably don't need to talk
- 46:54Speaker: about upcoming surgeries of
- 46:56Speaker: brothers.
- 46:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 46:58Speaker: On the YouTube show, it already happened, so.
- 47:01Speaker: No.
- 47:02Speaker: Okay.
- 47:02Speaker: Ooh.
- 47:05Speaker: But, uh.
- 47:06Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:07Speaker: I'm gonna get spectacle wipes.
- 47:11Speaker: I'm getting pterodactyl wings
- 47:13Speaker: implanted in my shoulders, so
- 47:14Speaker: screw you.
- 47:17Speaker: Okay.
- 47:17Speaker: Why did this.
- 47:18Speaker: Why did this turn into, uh, a
- 47:20Speaker: fava and, uh, and a thorn
- 47:24Speaker: sitting at the at the table in
- 47:26Speaker: Super Troopers.
- 47:26Speaker: Yeah, well, just, uh, my my car will grow wings and fly away.
- 47:32Speaker: Yeah.
- 47:34Speaker: Because we're rambling.
- 47:36Speaker: I, I want to see your new tattoos when you get them done.
- 47:40Speaker: Joe.
- 47:41Speaker: Yep.
- 47:41Speaker: We got.
- 47:41Speaker: Yep.
- 47:42Speaker: We're we're we're on the list.
- 47:44Speaker: The families.
- 47:44Speaker: It's not a medical procedure.
- 47:45Speaker: So I talked about it.
- 47:46Speaker: Yeah, we're we're, uh, the daughter turned twenty one.
- 47:49Speaker: She said, I want tat wife said, me too.
- 47:52Speaker: And I said, me three.
- 47:53Speaker: So we're we're eventually going to get them this summer.
- 47:58Speaker: I was talking about your angel
- 47:59Speaker: wings, but yeah, I'll get those
- 48:03Speaker: too, with your initials on each
- 48:05Speaker: side.
- 48:06Speaker: Bing bing.
- 48:07Speaker: Ah.
- 48:09Speaker: Yep.
- 48:10Speaker: I got you then.
- 48:11Speaker: Was here in the middle.
- 48:14Speaker: Um, you know what's in the middle?
- 48:19Speaker: Oh, I have to spend like, five
- 48:21Speaker: hours in the car with you on
- 48:22Speaker: Saturday.
- 48:23Speaker: Indeed, indeed.
- 48:28Speaker: Make sure you guys bring all the stuff we talked about.
- 48:30Speaker: I was literally going to say none of us are presenting, so.
- 48:33Speaker: Oh. Are you are you doing a paper?
- 48:36Speaker: No, it's annual meeting.
- 48:38Speaker: We can't do papers, so we don't need to bring any of this crap.
- 48:42Speaker: Just our happy smiles, our tuxedos, unfortunately.
- 48:45Speaker: And tuxedos.
- 48:46Speaker: And five hours.
- 48:49Speaker: Oof!
- 48:50Speaker: I gotta drive five hours tomorrow.
- 48:55Speaker: I gotta go to Saint Louis.
- 48:56Speaker: I gotta do the Truman lecture.
- 48:58Speaker: Oh, nice.
- 48:59Speaker: Oh. That's right.
- 49:00Speaker: Steve mentioned that he was going to see you.
- 49:02Speaker: Yeah, yeah, I'm super excited.
- 49:04Speaker: Seeing Steve is awesome.
- 49:06Speaker: Yes, I just saw him last week.
- 49:09Speaker: Jealous.
- 49:11Speaker: And he brings almost all the things that we've talked about
- 49:14Speaker: on the show tonight.
- 49:15Speaker: Oh, Steve is super prepared.
- 49:18Speaker: Like, uh, what do you call those people?
- 49:21Speaker: Like a prepper?
- 49:22Speaker: He's like a prepper.
- 49:24Speaker: Mhm.
- 49:26Speaker: Bluetooth speakers named brother Bluetooth.
- 49:29Speaker: He's our substitute bagpiper.
- 49:32Speaker: Yes.
- 49:34Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:35Speaker: How many guys do you guys, uh,
- 49:37Speaker: how many, uh, lodges have you
- 49:38Speaker: been to where that is like
- 49:41Speaker: there's a guy who's dedicated
- 49:43Speaker: his whole thing is the Bluetooth
- 49:45Speaker: speaker and the music for the
- 49:47Speaker: lodge, like through processions
- 49:50Speaker: and stuff.
- 49:52Speaker: Yeah.
- 49:52Speaker: I think one of the first guy.
- 49:54Speaker: Yeah, one of the first times I went to Joe's Lodge, uh, the
- 49:58Speaker: master of your lodge, uh, he did a rendition of a Metallica song.
- 50:08Speaker: It's a classical style.
- 50:09Speaker: Yeah, yeah, that's Tom.
- 50:11Speaker: Yeah, he's our, uh, our lodge DJ
- 50:13Speaker: because we don't have a
- 50:14Speaker: musician.
- 50:15Speaker: It was awesome.
- 50:16Speaker: Like full reflection, taking the time to get through it.
- 50:19Speaker: It was a lot of fun.
- 50:20Speaker: Mhm.
- 50:22Speaker: I remember doing a cello version
- 50:24Speaker: of welcome to the jungle for the
- 50:27Speaker: Patriot Lodge when I was their
- 50:28Speaker: musician.
- 50:31Speaker: Oh my gosh.
- 50:36Speaker: Yeah.
- 50:36Speaker: Hey, it is about time for us to wrap up.
- 50:39Speaker: For sure.
- 50:40Speaker: Yeah, almost an hour on.
- 50:43Speaker: So. So, um.
- 50:50Speaker: Yes, chaos has abounded this episode thanks to the tower and
- 50:54Speaker: John being out.
- 50:56Speaker: But we do have time for the final question.
- 50:58Speaker: Um. The final question is, is there anything that you never
- 51:10Speaker: bring with you?
- 51:13Speaker: When you go travel?
- 51:24Speaker: Uh. I don't know, that could be so many things.
- 51:31Speaker: Wow.
- 51:32Speaker: I know it's a terrible last question.
- 51:35Speaker: I don't know.
- 51:35Speaker: I mean, I think there are like
- 51:36Speaker: Masonic items that I'm a lot of
- 51:39Speaker: times I choose not to bring, uh,
- 51:41Speaker: like I never bring like I'm
- 51:43Speaker: supposed to wear my past
- 51:46Speaker: district deputy grand master
- 51:47Speaker: apron.
- 51:48Speaker: I don't on purpose.
- 51:50Speaker: Mhm.
- 51:50Speaker: I choose never to bring it.
- 51:54Speaker: For those, you know, all those all the reasons.
- 51:59Speaker: But, you know, I'm trying to
