- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good morning from the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Seahawks Headquarters Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrood, Coors Light,
- 0:12Speaker 2: as cold as the Rockies. Seahawks practiced yesterday. Sam Darnold
- 0:16Speaker 2: was in cleats. He was thrown off to the side
- 0:20Speaker 2: before practice. Seven days after he strained his glute and
- 0:23Speaker 2: left the season opener after just five plays. That's a
- 0:27Speaker 2: good sign. Darnold's not a long-term injury, which the Seahawks
- 0:30Speaker 2: are maintaining, but he will not start Sunday. Mike McDonald
- 0:33Speaker 2: confirmed Drew Locke, the starting quarterback for the Seahawks, against
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday. And McDonald also said
- 0:39Speaker 2: the team's going to roll with just two quarterbacks. Locke
- 0:41Speaker 2: and his backup is going to be Jalen Milrow. Well,
- 0:45Speaker 2: Darnold is out. Nicky Manwari was in full pad yesterday,
- 0:47Speaker 2: but limited again in practice. He hasn't practiced fully since mid-June.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Of course, he had the arthroscopic gang surgery in July.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Wide receiver Torrey Horton was full go, though. He's on
- 0:57Speaker 2: track to make his season debut Sunday at the Cardinals.
- 1:00Speaker 2: NFL Week 2 begins tonight. Detroit coming off an overtime
- 1:02Speaker 2: win at home over the Saints playing at Buffalo. It's
- 1:05Speaker 2: the Bills opener in the new Palace Stadium. The Mariners.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Are the Mariners still playing? Yeah, I guess they're still playing.
- 1:11Speaker 2: They won at Anaheim. Sorry, Jessamyn. Yeah, they won at Anaheim,
- 1:16Speaker 2: yet they lost both the series at the A's and
- 1:18Speaker 2: the Angels. Bottom of the league, those two teams. Nine
- 1:21Speaker 2: games left in the most disappointing, frustrating season. In Mariners history,
- 1:26Speaker 2: the Storm, they're back after the WNBA break for the
- 1:29Speaker 2: World Basketball Championships. They're hosting the Las Vegas Aces tonight
- 1:32Speaker 2: at Climate Pledge Arena. Former Washington Huskies defensive coordinator Steve
- 1:35Speaker 2: Belichick resigned today as North Carolina's defensive coordinator after an
- 1:39Speaker 2: internal investigation by that school into the football program, the
- 1:43Speaker 2: culture his father, head coach Bill Belichick, is heading. UNC
- 1:46Speaker 2: announced the findings of an investigation Thursday in conjunction with
- 1:50Speaker 2: Steve Belichick's resignation. UNC said in a statement the probe
- 1:54Speaker 2: found revealed isolated disregard for values and standards of conduct
- 1:59Speaker 2: in the football program in North Carolina.
- 2:01Speaker 3: What do you think happened?
- 2:02Speaker 2: There's some reports that Steve Belichick was doing stuff. I'm
- 2:07Speaker 2: not going to disarm him here. NHL training camps are
- 2:11Speaker 2: opening today. The Kraken start at the King County Iceplex.
- 2:15Speaker 2: The Winnipeg Jets suspended star goalie and 2025 league MVP
- 2:18Speaker 2: Connor Hellebuck. for failure to report to their training camp
- 2:22Speaker 2: in Manitoba. Now on with the Thursday show. Jessamyn McIntyre
- 2:26Speaker 2: with me, Greg Bell.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Am I with you, though, Greg?
- 2:29Speaker 2: No, not physically. She is back in the Elliott Bay
- 2:32Speaker 2: Studios in Seattle. I'm down at Seahawk headquarters in Renton-Along Lake, Washington.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Mark Morrison, we're going to have him on the show.
- 2:38Speaker 2: That was a great idea. I told my wife and
- 2:40Speaker 2: my daughter when I saw him in Hawaii this last
- 2:42Speaker 2: weekend about Mark Morrison needs to be on our show.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Oh, I am going through that grapevine.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That would be awesome. Yes. I love that. We rented
- 2:53Speaker 2: a Jeep and were driving around a North Shore, Hawaii,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and that song came on. My daughter was in the backseat.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It was pretty cool. We relived the whole story. She's
- 3:03Speaker 2: heard the show a few times and thinks it's pretty
- 3:05Speaker 2: cool that we play that. So that's why we play it.
- 3:07Speaker 2: For instance, Sarah Bell, U.S. Coast Guard out in Honolulu
- 3:11Speaker 2: and a U.S. Coast Guard midget. Good morning from Seahawks headquarters. Hi, Jessamyn.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Good morning to you back there. Good morning. Happy Thursday. Yeah,
- 3:21Speaker 2: it is a happy Thursday. Yes. The sun is out
- 3:23Speaker 2: in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. September is the best here. Oh,
- 3:27Speaker 2: my gosh.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's so underrated.
- 3:29Speaker 2: It is. People forget because summer's over and the kids
- 3:32Speaker 2: are back at school, but those that don't live in
- 3:34Speaker 2: the Pacific Northwest, you're listening on the iHeartRadio app or
- 3:36Speaker 2: wherever on 933KJR. com or maybe watching on YouTube, it is
- 3:41Speaker 2: really a special place in September. It is crystal clear
- 3:44Speaker 2: blue skies most of the time. It did rain last weekend,
- 3:46Speaker 2: I guess. But It is perfect temperature, 75, 78 degrees,
- 3:53Speaker 2: cool mornings, cool evenings, bright sunshine, coming across Lake Washington
- 3:57Speaker 2: today to work. It was really, wow. I mean, Hawaii
- 4:01Speaker 2: was nice, but this is a pretty damn nice place,
- 4:03Speaker 2: especially in September because we all know what's ahead in October, November,
- 4:07Speaker 2: December here. But, yeah, September, I think, of all my
- 4:10Speaker 2: years living here, 20, 30 years, September is my favorite
- 4:13Speaker 2: month of the year, I think.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I mean, I'm a very, very big fall person. So
- 4:20Speaker 4: it goes, for me, I go backwards when it comes
- 4:23Speaker 4: to my favorite seasons. I go fall, summer, spring, then
- 4:28Speaker 4: winter for favorite seasons. But I travel a lot, so
- 4:32Speaker 4: it depends on where I am when I root for
- 4:34Speaker 4: a season.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You're from a regional country. The fall might be the
- 4:37Speaker 2: best time, and that's New York. And falls in New
- 4:39Speaker 2: York are majestic. Yes. They're really, really pretty and beautiful.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's about the only time I thought West Point was
- 4:45Speaker 2: actually a pretty cool place.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You've experienced all four seasons there.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. There was no spring at West Point. It
- 4:53Speaker 2: went from winter to summer. It was pretty hot. On
- 4:56Speaker 2: the show today, Sam Darnold, he isn't just laying in
- 4:59Speaker 2: bed healing his glute injury. That was obvious yesterday. He
- 5:02Speaker 2: was in cleats on the field before practice. We'll talk
- 5:05Speaker 2: to you about what I saw there, even though he
- 5:07Speaker 2: showed up on the report as did not participate in
- 5:09Speaker 2: practice because he didn't. And then Nicky Minori, four days
- 5:12Speaker 2: before The Seahawks play at the Cardinals. It looks encouraging
- 5:17Speaker 2: when you see video of him at the beginning of practice,
- 5:19Speaker 2: but we'll talk about how I don't think he's going
- 5:20Speaker 2: to play Sunday. At 1025, you hear from Coach Mike
- 5:24Speaker 2: McDonald talking about Darnold, talking about the quarterback plans in practice.
- 5:28Speaker 2: They're going to change. We've talked a lot since Darnold's
- 5:32Speaker 2: injury about how starting quarterbacks get all the reps, right?
- 5:36Speaker 2: That's not the case this week. The Seahawks are changing
- 5:39Speaker 2: that up, and Jalen Milrow is getting some ones time.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And it's not that they're trying to bench Drew Locke
- 5:44Speaker 2: at all. But there was a lesson learned last week
- 5:47Speaker 2: about readiness of the backup quarterback that they're going to
- 5:50Speaker 2: try to avoid this week in case Jalen Milrow has
- 5:52Speaker 2: to play in Arizona. We're going to talk about that
- 5:55Speaker 2: at 11 o'clock. We're going to go live to Phoenix.
- 5:57Speaker 2: We're going to talk to Cardinals Radio Anna's former NFL
- 5:59Speaker 2: offensive lineman, A.Q. Shipley, for a colorful character in his
- 6:03Speaker 2: second year now, replacing the great Ron Wolfley down in
- 6:06Speaker 2: Arizona as the radio host. Color analyst. He's also on
- 6:10Speaker 2: the Pat McAfee show. Justin's anxious to ask AQ Siffley
- 6:13Speaker 2: about that.
- 6:14Speaker 4: We have a lot of interesting cross paths when it
- 6:19Speaker 4: comes to it, because a lot of where my father
- 6:21Speaker 4: used to recruit crosses his paths. And we have mutual friends,
- 6:25Speaker 4: which I learned last night when I was trying to get.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Him on the show today.
- 6:28Speaker 4: And yeah, I think that'll be a lot of fun.
- 6:32Speaker 2: He's from Coriopolis, Pennsylvania, western Pennsylvania, just outside Pittsburgh. Actually
- 6:35Speaker 2: near the airport. It's about 30 minutes from where I
- 6:37Speaker 2: grew up. A.Q. Shipley is a former Cardinals offensive lineman.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He was briefly a Cardinals coach, and now he's the
- 6:44Speaker 2: Cardinals radio broadcaster. He's going to talk about what he
- 6:47Speaker 2: saw in the Cardinals opener. They walloped the Chargers in
- 6:51Speaker 2: the Jim Harbaugh's down in Los Angeles last weekend. And
- 6:54Speaker 2: we're going to talk about how they did that and
- 6:55Speaker 2: what the Seahawks can expect in their game Sunday down
- 6:58Speaker 2: in Glendale. 1130, we'll read back your texts, talkbacks, if
- 7:01Speaker 2: you have any, on the iHeartRadio app or our website, 933kgr. com,
- 7:05Speaker 2: the little red microphone button. Leave a 30-second or shorter
- 7:08Speaker 2: voicemail message. We'll play that back at 1130 or your
- 7:11Speaker 2: text on the Tacoma Dodge text line. 49451 and an
- 7:14Speaker 2: 1135 Factor Fiction brought to you by the Lucky Eagle
- 7:17Speaker 2: Casino Resort. Your chance to win $ 1, 000 this week, $ 10, 000
- 7:19Speaker 2: by December. Today's chance on our show comes at 11.35.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Jessamyn's going to have an NFL pick for you. You
- 7:27Speaker 2: know what?
- 7:27Speaker 4: I got two days in a row when you were
- 7:29Speaker 4: on vacation in Hawaii, and I feel like you should
- 7:33Speaker 4: make the rest of the week. This show should be
- 7:35Speaker 4: majority you picks.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I can do it.
- 7:39Speaker 4: But if I make one today and you make one tomorrow,
- 7:42Speaker 4: then I get three picks and you.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Only get two. So I think that you should do it.
- 7:48Speaker 2: All right. Well, I can come up with something.
- 7:50Speaker 5: Well, I can, too.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I can, too.
- 7:53Speaker 4: I'm just saying that this is your show, Greg, and
- 7:56Speaker 4: I don't want to take over Factor Fiction.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well, you went three and two last week, and you
- 8:00Speaker 2: helped us quite a bit. Yeah. Maybe. All right. Well,
- 8:03Speaker 2: one of us will have a big event at 1135.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Ian Furness will be back out here. Actually, he's at
- 8:07Speaker 2: the King County Ice Pikes today for the start of
- 8:10Speaker 2: Kraken Training Camp, and he'll join me at 1145 to
- 8:13Speaker 2: tell me what he's got going on with pucks and
- 8:14Speaker 2: more on his show from 12 until 3. Lots going
- 8:20Speaker 2: on here at the Seahawks because it's finally a normal
- 8:23Speaker 2: game week. It wasn't normal until yesterday, and now they're
- 8:26Speaker 2: in the regular Sunday to Sunday flow, which is Wednesday, Thursday,
- 8:30Speaker 2: Friday practices, Saturday. A normal week. Yeah, finally, for the
- 8:34Speaker 2: first time since, well, even the Super Bowl wasn't a
- 8:36Speaker 2: normal week, so the first time since the NFC Championship
- 8:39Speaker 2: game in late January on a normal mid-game flow. And
- 8:44Speaker 2: yesterday was interesting to see Sam Donald on the field.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I saw him walking through the locker room carrying his cleats.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And he wasn't really limping either with his glute injury.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Only seven days since he'd been in Harborview Medical Center
- 8:56Speaker 2: and getting tested and CT scanned for possible fracture of
- 8:59Speaker 2: his hip. And he's walking around, he's carrying his cleats.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And I thought, well, that's interesting. And He ended up
- 9:04Speaker 2: going outside, and he was throwing the ball, and he
- 9:06Speaker 2: was with a trainer, and he was doing dropbacks. Then
- 9:09Speaker 2: he left as soon as we started to go out
- 9:12Speaker 2: for the beginning of practice, and then he wasn't a
- 9:15Speaker 2: participant in practice at all. Nicky Manwari was a participant,
- 9:20Speaker 2: but still on a limited base. He was in full pads,
- 9:22Speaker 2: and at the start of practice, it looked like perhaps
- 9:24Speaker 2: he was going to fully participate, but he was listed
- 9:27Speaker 2: as a limited participant by the team, which by NFL
- 9:29Speaker 2: rules means he did not participate in 100% of his
- 9:32Speaker 2: normal workload for practice with the team and team drills.
- 9:37Speaker 2: So he has not still fully practiced since minicamp in mid-June.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And then a few weeks after that, he had the
- 9:44Speaker 2: arthroscopic ankle surgery. He hasn't practiced fully since then. He
- 9:47Speaker 2: was practice limited last week and did not play. They
- 9:51Speaker 2: listed him as questionable and he didn't play. I think
- 9:53Speaker 2: the same thing is going to happen, Jessamyn, this week.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I think Nicky Maury is not going to play. I
- 9:57Speaker 2: don't know, even if he practices fully today, I don't
- 10:00Speaker 2: know if it's in their best interest to play him.
- 10:02Speaker 3: You save a Nick. You save a Nick.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:06Speaker 3: And that's what I think they're doing with both him
- 10:08Speaker 3: and Sam.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Could be. What I saw yesterday from Darnold suggests it's
- 10:14Speaker 2: not going to be long. It could be this week
- 10:16Speaker 2: that he misses only. He could come back for at
- 10:19Speaker 2: Washington week three. And I think a better case scenario
- 10:24Speaker 2: for him, again, to not get hurt as soon as
- 10:27Speaker 2: he gets back. This Seahawks medical staff is notorious in
- 10:31Speaker 2: a good way for being very conservative and not bringing
- 10:34Speaker 2: guys back when, yeah, he can play now, but can
- 10:37Speaker 2: he play game after game after game all the way
- 10:39Speaker 2: until January, February? That's the question they always ask themselves.
- 10:44Speaker 2: It's not can Sam Darnold play this week. It's can
- 10:46Speaker 2: Sam Darnold play this game and the next game and
- 10:48Speaker 2: the next game and the next game? Same with Nicky Manwari.
- 10:51Speaker 2: And if that answer is maybe, then they say no,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you're not playing. They need an answer of yes. And
- 10:57Speaker 2: that takes multiple days in a row and sometimes weeks
- 11:02Speaker 2: on top of weeks of practicing fully before they can
- 11:05Speaker 2: determine that because the most important aspect of an injury
- 11:08Speaker 2: return is how do you respond the first day or
- 11:11Speaker 2: two or three that you fully practice? It's not enough
- 11:13Speaker 2: to just fully practice, then play. You have to respond
- 11:16Speaker 2: to that practice. And that's what Nicky Manwari has yet
- 11:19Speaker 2: to do since June. That's what makes me think he's
- 11:21Speaker 2: not going to play, even if he fully practices today.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Which means what happens at safety? Because Ty Okada didn't
- 11:27Speaker 2: practice again yesterday. He missed last week's with a hamstring injury.
- 11:31Speaker 2: We talked about hamstrings. We know that, Jessamyn. They just
- 11:34Speaker 2: don't go away overnight or take some ibuprofen.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Muscles are interesting, yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's a hamstring issue that has come up
- 11:42Speaker 2: relatively recently because Ty Okada was fully practicing up until
- 11:48Speaker 2: last week. So it sounds like he's not going to play.
- 11:50Speaker 2: It appears he's not going to play either. So they're
- 11:52Speaker 2: in the same situation at safety that they were this
- 11:54Speaker 2: time last week in that both Okada and Imanwari look
- 11:58Speaker 2: like they're not playing Sunday in Arizona. which means I
- 12:01Speaker 2: would think Rodney Thomas, after the stellar performance he had
- 12:04Speaker 2: as a practice squad call-up last week, is going to
- 12:06Speaker 2: get called up from the practice squad again. They still
- 12:09Speaker 2: have A.J. Finley on the active roster. Remember, they added
- 12:12Speaker 2: him to the 53 before kickoff against the Patriots last week.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So he's on the active roster, and that could be
- 12:19Speaker 2: their options again at safety at one and two, and
- 12:22Speaker 2: Thomas being the starter back with Julian Love. Something else
- 12:27Speaker 2: that we haven't discussed here in about a week or so,
- 12:30Speaker 2: What is up with Trevon Diggs? Remember the 2021 All-Pro cornerback?
- 12:36Speaker 2: He wasn't ready to play last week, not physically at
- 12:39Speaker 2: cornerback or in the scheme, so they kept him on
- 12:42Speaker 2: the practice squad and didn't call him up. They call
- 12:44Speaker 2: up Vellis Jones Jr. as a backup running back instead.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I would think Rodney Thomas and Trevon Diggs are in
- 12:52Speaker 2: play to get called up this time for the Arizona game,
- 12:56Speaker 2: but Nehemiah Pritchett played really well in the opener. He
- 13:01Speaker 2: tackled well, which has been his problem, and then we
- 13:03Speaker 2: saw the interception that Thomas deflected to him when Drake
- 13:06Speaker 2: May just handed him a jump ball and double coverage
- 13:09Speaker 2: for the first of May's three interceptions in the fourth quarter.
- 13:13Speaker 2: But Pritchett really impressed the coaches last week. McDonald has
- 13:17Speaker 2: said a couple times how well Pritchett played in that game.
- 13:20Speaker 2: It allowed, as we said, Devin Witherspoon to play inside
- 13:22Speaker 2: at nickel, which is where McDonald wants him to play.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I don't see Pritchett getting demoted for the performance he
- 13:28Speaker 2: had last week. Mm-hmm. So maybe Diggs doesn't come up
- 13:31Speaker 2: and he stays on the practice squad again. When he
- 13:34Speaker 2: re-signed Diggs after they cut him, he didn't re-sign to
- 13:38Speaker 2: spend the season on the practice squad. He re-signed with
- 13:40Speaker 2: the understanding that he would ramp up on the practice
- 13:43Speaker 2: squad to come and play. And here's Nehemiah Pritchett emerging
- 13:47Speaker 2: in the interim. So that to me is an interesting
- 13:50Speaker 2: side light of this Seahawks defense is whether Trevon Diggs
- 13:53Speaker 2: will get elevated to play and whether you demote Nehemiah
- 13:57Speaker 2: Pritchett for the performance he had. Last week. We'll see.
- 14:01Speaker 2: There's some shell games still to be done outside the
- 14:04Speaker 2: secondary and safety in and outside cornerback. 49451 on the
- 14:09Speaker 2: Comodage text line. You're concerned about Nicky Manwari. The fact
- 14:12Speaker 2: that he has not fully practiced since that surgery in mid-July.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And the expectation was that he would play in the
- 14:19Speaker 2: opener when he had that surgery. He didn't play in
- 14:21Speaker 2: the opener, obviously. And now it's trending toward him not
- 14:24Speaker 2: being able to play in week two. You're concerned about
- 14:27Speaker 2: Nicky Manwari. Because he is the focal point of that defense.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I mean, everything McDonald duds in the back seven revolves
- 14:34Speaker 2: around first Nicky Manwari and where he puts him before. Jessamyn,
- 14:38Speaker 2: I don't know that it's a huge concern that he
- 14:40Speaker 2: doesn't play in Arizona in September, but it is something
- 14:45Speaker 2: noteworthy to say that he has yet to fully practice
- 14:48Speaker 2: since that surgery.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, like I was saying with the earlier defense,
- 14:53Speaker 4: players that we have discussed is that I think they're
- 14:55Speaker 4: being very protective at this point I mean the Seahawks
- 14:58Speaker 4: played longer than anyone else you know save the Patriots
- 15:03Speaker 4: but they I think they're looking at the long-term thing
- 15:07Speaker 4: they're playing the long game on these injuries so I
- 15:11Speaker 4: don't necessarily look at these as concerning I look at
- 15:16Speaker 4: them as okay we are actually competing this year and
- 15:20Speaker 4: we're protecting our best assets that we have That's my view.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I think you're right about that. They are definitely on
- 15:29Speaker 2: the long play. They expect to be playing in January, February,
- 15:33Speaker 2: so they're looking forward to September for sure.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Yeah, and protect your best assets.
- 15:38Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know what other teams do when
- 15:41Speaker 4: they come out with a splash and they push guys
- 15:43Speaker 4: into action.
- 15:43Speaker 3: When they're not ready to be there.
- 15:45Speaker 4: And it seems like the Seahawks are taking very good
- 15:48Speaker 4: care of their players.
- 15:49Speaker 2: They do take the long view, and I said they've
- 15:51Speaker 2: been conservative teams in their medical estimations of guys coming back.
- 15:54Speaker 2: We're also going to talk in the show today about
- 15:56Speaker 2: the Mariners. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic is reporting today
- 16:00Speaker 2: that manager Dan Wilson is the manager most likely to
- 16:03Speaker 2: be fired by the end of the major league season.
- 16:05Speaker 2: No big shock there.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Well, you thought he was going to resign.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I think he's going to resign still. I think he's
- 16:10Speaker 2: just going to.
- 16:11Speaker 3: And I think they would allow him that if that
- 16:13Speaker 3: was the situation.
- 16:14Speaker 2: And I think they're going to try to avoid saying
- 16:16Speaker 2: they fired a franchise icon, I think. But what about
- 16:19Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto?
- 16:20Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Chuck Powell had a groceries analogy at the end of
- 16:24Speaker 2: his show I was listening to before I came on
- 16:27Speaker 2: about how DePoto, as the president of baseball operations, bought
- 16:30Speaker 2: all the groceries, all the ingredients for the team. And
- 16:33Speaker 2: then it's up to Dan Wilson and his coaching staff
- 16:35Speaker 2: to actually cook the meal. And you can't blame the
- 16:38Speaker 2: meal for being bad because the cook played about it.
- 16:40Speaker 2: You can't blame the guy who bought the groceries. My
- 16:44Speaker 2: argument to that would be easily DePoto was in charge
- 16:47Speaker 2: of everything in baseball operations, including how you use the bullpen.
- 16:52Speaker 2: who plays, launch angles and exit velocities, and the emphasis
- 16:56Speaker 2: on that in the organization, the bullpen philosophy, how they
- 17:00Speaker 2: use starting pitchers, all the things that have gone wrong
- 17:03Speaker 2: the last 11 years for the Mariners, Jerry DePoto's been
- 17:06Speaker 2: in charge of. The fact that there is even Dan
- 17:08Speaker 2: Wilson as the manager is Jerry DePoto's fault. I see
- 17:13Speaker 2: Joe Maddon on the text line quite a bit. There
- 17:15Speaker 2: is no chance in hell that Joe Maddon is coming
- 17:18Speaker 2: here to coach, to manage under I don't know any
- 17:21Speaker 2: manager who's had any autonomy in one big, like Joe
- 17:25Speaker 2: Maddon has, would ever come here to Seattle as long
- 17:29Speaker 2: as Jerry DiPoto's in charge.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Why?
- 17:31Speaker 6: Because no manager who's been independently successful wants to manage
- 17:35Speaker 6: by iPad and analytics. And he doesn't want to be
- 17:38Speaker 6: dictated to from up high on how I can run
- 17:41Speaker 6: my team, what nine I bring out, when I can
- 17:44Speaker 6: take my starting pitcher out, what bullpen guys I can
- 17:47Speaker 6: use and how I can or can't use them on
- 17:49Speaker 6: consecutive days. how they can't start an inning in the
- 17:51Speaker 6: middle of an inning. They can't start a second inning.
- 17:55Speaker 6: Joe Madden would tell them to shove their iPads up
- 17:57Speaker 6: their executive suites.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Okay, thank you. Thank you for self-editing there. I do
- 18:03Speaker 3: appreciate that. Yeah, I'm with you on that as well.
- 18:08Speaker 4: And I just think that, you know, I work majority
- 18:11Speaker 4: in football, right? And I see all these young coaches,
- 18:14Speaker 4: these young up-and-coming people come in. So in baseball, baseball is–
- 18:21Speaker 4: it's not like the team age is old, but it's
- 18:24Speaker 4: an older sport. And I don't think that you're going
- 18:28Speaker 4: to get someone like that. I mean, I don't know
- 18:32Speaker 4: what price it would take for it to be worth
- 18:34Speaker 4: it for someone like a Joe Maddon. And we're just
- 18:37Speaker 4: using him as an example. But man, that would be tough.
- 18:42Speaker 4: That'd be tough to come in and then you'd have to,
- 18:45Speaker 4: you know, refurbish everything in the clubhouse, you know, like
- 18:49Speaker 4: put some plastic coverings on it and everything.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 4: It would just be a different world. And I don't
- 18:55Speaker 4: know how much they want to change. And I think
- 18:58Speaker 4: that's the biggest question.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Exactly. It's ownership's unwillingness to get involved and change. And
- 19:03Speaker 2: we talked about this because the business is working, but
- 19:05Speaker 2: the baseball operations is broken and the president of baseball
- 19:08Speaker 2: operations needs to be held accountable for the fact they've
- 19:10Speaker 2: only made the playoffs twice in 11 years and that
- 19:12Speaker 2: they've regressed so far from being eight outs from the
- 19:15Speaker 2: world series to subterranean 11 games under 500. That, that,
- 19:21Speaker 2: That's not a managerial fault. That's an organizational fault. We've
- 19:24Speaker 2: talked about the leadership. Well, the leadership starts at the top,
- 19:28Speaker 2: and that is at the very top. How does DiPoto
- 19:32Speaker 2: get a pass for now going on 11 years and
- 19:34Speaker 2: only making the playoffs twice? There aren't a lot of
- 19:37Speaker 2: franchises in sports that would put up with that, especially
- 19:41Speaker 2: with the pitching staff the Mariners have, especially with how
- 19:44Speaker 2: close they are to going to the World Series, and
- 19:46Speaker 2: then they pratfall. I mean, this is, again, the most disappointing, outrageously,
- 19:51Speaker 2: ridiculously frustrating season in Mariners history. I don't think that's
- 19:54Speaker 2: even arguable. The stuff we've seen, the lack of accountability
- 19:58Speaker 2: for the plays we've seen and throwing balls into the
- 20:00Speaker 2: stands with one out, And running on 3-2 with one
- 20:03Speaker 2: out thinking there's two outs. And last night, Naylor just
- 20:06Speaker 2: walking off of third base. I don't know what that was.
- 20:10Speaker 2: I mean, nobody's held accountable for that stuff. Just keep
- 20:13Speaker 2: on trotting on. Keep playing. You got guaranteed contracts. I'm good.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Ain't good. That needs to start at the top. We'll
- 20:19Speaker 2: talk about that as well later on in the show
- 20:21Speaker 2: around Ken Rosenthal's report in The Athletic that he believes
- 20:25Speaker 2: Dan Wilson is the most likely manager to be fired.
- 20:28Speaker 3: I don't think he's going to get fired.
- 20:30Speaker 4: I think he will gracefully go back to the booth
- 20:32Speaker 4: if they want him up there.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah, for him, I think he ought to just go
- 20:36Speaker 2: in retirement and enjoy life he was having before.
- 20:39Speaker 4: I mean, he was kind of doing that.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he was. He and his wife were just like chilling.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Then they called him out to replace Scott Service. Up next,
- 20:47Speaker 2: let's talk about what Mike McDonald is saying about the
- 20:50Speaker 2: Seahawks injury situation, about the quarterback situation, about the practice
- 20:54Speaker 2: reps for quarterbacks. It's going to be different. It already
- 20:57Speaker 2: is different this week at the Seahawks compared to a
- 20:59Speaker 2: normal NFL game week. We'll talk about that next at
- 21:02Speaker 2: 11 o'clock.
- 21:02Speaker 1: A.Q.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Shipley, the Cardinals radio analyst, going to talk about what
- 21:08Speaker 2: the Seahawks have waiting for them in Arizona on Sunday
- 21:10Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. Hi, welcome back to Seahawks headquarters, the
- 21:28Speaker 2: Virginia Mason Athletic Center. Greg Bell and Jessamyn McIntyre with
- 21:31Speaker 2: you as we are every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon
- 21:33Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJR FM. We got the Huskies home again.
- 21:39Speaker 2: They play Eastern Washington 415 on Saturday, live here on
- 21:43Speaker 2: KJR with Elyse Woodward, Cam Cleveland, and Dave Softy-Mahler on
- 21:46Speaker 2: the call. We got the Kraken starting their Training camp
- 21:50Speaker 2: at the Kraken Community Iceplex. I think I call it
- 21:53Speaker 2: the King County Iceplex.
- 21:55Speaker 4: I mean, Casey can get confused, but Kraken Community, yes.
- 21:59Speaker 2: That's where Ian Furness is today. His show will be
- 22:01Speaker 2: from 12 until 3 with a lot of pucks on
- 22:03Speaker 2: the first day of training. It's a short training camp
- 22:05Speaker 2: in NHL land. They do it like five, four days.
- 22:08Speaker 3: They play for a really long time.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I know, and then they go to like two or
- 22:12Speaker 2: three preseason games, and then bam, the season will start here.
- 22:16Speaker 2: the end of September, beginning of October, really early start
- 22:20Speaker 2: this year. And the Kraken have a couple feature games
- 22:24Speaker 2: early in the season. They're going to Finland for two games.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Dan's going to talk pucks in the Kraken here on
- 22:28Speaker 2: the Home of the Kraken, 93.3 KGRFM from 12 until
- 22:32Speaker 2: 3 today. I'm out here at Seahawks headquarters because it's
- 22:35Speaker 2: another practice day for Sunday's game, week two at Arizona.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Of course, Drew Locke, the starting quarterback, with Sam Darnold
- 22:42Speaker 2: injured and out. Mike McDonald made that official yesterday that
- 22:45Speaker 2: Darnold will not play and that's Drew Locke will get
- 22:48Speaker 2: his start. A first start for Seattle for Locke since
- 22:50Speaker 2: December of 2023. He then signed with the New York
- 22:54Speaker 2: Giants and started a couple games at the end of
- 22:56Speaker 2: the 24th season for the Giants when he was a
- 22:58Speaker 2: backup to then-injured Daniel Jones, and he signed back with
- 23:01Speaker 2: the Seahawks for a two-year contract that ends this year.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Mike McDonald yesterday talking here at Seahawks headquarters about Sam Darnold,
- 23:10Speaker 2: trying to get a few more specifics out of him
- 23:12Speaker 2: on the injury. about the Seahawks' practices for the quarterbacks,
- 23:17Speaker 2: the rotation of the quarterbacks, Jalen Milrow and Drew Locke
- 23:20Speaker 2: this week. It's different than a normal week. And also
- 23:24Speaker 2: a quick update on Ernest Jones, who didn't practice at
- 23:26Speaker 2: the start of this week. This was Mike McDonald yesterday.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Yeah, he'll get all the reps.
- 23:31Speaker 8: He's our starter this week, and we'll operate accordingly.
- 23:36Speaker 7: But Drew's going to start here for a while.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So.
- 23:42Speaker 8: I'm looking forward to seeing him practice today, just like
- 23:44Speaker 8: I am Sam when he's playing. We've had some episodes
- 23:49Speaker 8: in our history here, especially the latter parts of last year.
- 23:52Speaker 8: I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, where we
- 23:54Speaker 8: felt like Drew was about to go play for.
- 23:56Speaker 7: Us and really nothing changes.
- 24:00Speaker 8: I would expect nothing to change with Drew's demeanor or
- 24:03Speaker 8: the way he approaches his work.
- 24:05Speaker 9: But have you.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Seen anything different, a spring in his step, an enthusiasm,
- 24:10Speaker 3: a joy, anything?
- 24:12Speaker 7: Yeah, he's Drew.
- 24:13Speaker 8: I mean, that's the way Drew is every day. Drew's
- 24:17Speaker 8: a joyful guy. He's a great guy. He's got his
- 24:21Speaker 8: own personality, which we love. He's got his style of
- 24:24Speaker 8: playing quarterback, which is what we want here. Obviously, we
- 24:27Speaker 8: want to be within the scheme and how we're training
- 24:29Speaker 8: our guys, but you've got to be yourself, too, and
- 24:32Speaker 8: Drew's definitely that, and we're looking forward to it.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Mike, do you have more clarity on what the injury
- 24:36Speaker 5: is that Sam's dealing with?
- 24:39Speaker 7: It's a glute, to my knowledge, right?
- 24:41Speaker 2: Glute, yeah, glute. as opposed to the tendon?
- 24:46Speaker 7: Uh, glutes or tendon?
- 24:48Speaker 2: I thought a glute was a muscle. Well, I think
- 24:51Speaker 2: there was a report that it was a glute tendon.
- 24:54Speaker 7: You're right. I'm an uncharted waters here.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:59Speaker 10: When you're game planning for an opponent, how much of
- 25:02Speaker 10: it is about players versus plays?
- 25:05Speaker 8: This is a, it's a tricky one because, uh, there's a,
- 25:09Speaker 8: there's a balance there. You have to, um, We talked
- 25:13Speaker 8: about today in our team meeting, everyone says, hey, it's
- 25:15Speaker 8: about us.
- 25:16Speaker 7: What does that mean about how we focus?
- 25:19Speaker 8: We have to focus on being our best versions of ourselves,
- 25:25Speaker 8: getting our bodies, minds, spirits ready to play our best
- 25:28Speaker 8: football every day, especially game day. Coaching-wise, I think we
- 25:36Speaker 8: have to keep it in our wheelhouse at all times.
- 25:38Speaker 8: I think if we're scattered and what we're asking our
- 25:41Speaker 8: players to do, I think that the players will play scattered. However,
- 25:46Speaker 8: I also think that, you know, part of our ethos
- 25:48Speaker 8: here is and things that we believe in is we
- 25:50Speaker 8: want to, we want to stay aggressive and we want
- 25:52Speaker 8: to attack things that we see on tape and especially
- 25:56Speaker 8: structurally and matchups and things like that. So it's a,
- 26:00Speaker 8: it's definitely a balance, you know, and it's a, it's
- 26:04Speaker 8: a delicate balance. I felt like we've hit the mark
- 26:07Speaker 8: a lot of times here. And sometimes we've fallen short
- 26:09Speaker 8: as coaches of, I think anytime we regret it is
- 26:13Speaker 8: we put the emphasis too much on the other team. However,
- 26:18Speaker 8: I think we owe it to our players as well
- 26:19Speaker 8: to stay aggressive and try to give them as much
- 26:21Speaker 8: of an advantage as possible. So that's something that we
- 26:27Speaker 8: spend a lot of time on, we take a lot
- 26:28Speaker 8: of pride in, and you feel a pretty heavy responsibility
- 26:31Speaker 8: to do it the right way.
- 26:32Speaker 10: You talked about schematics there. How much do you look
- 26:35Speaker 10: into individual player matchups? Like this guy has done well
- 26:38Speaker 10: against this individual player versus... this is a scheme they
- 26:41Speaker 10: play and we know that we're going to do well
- 26:43Speaker 10: against that scheme.
- 26:44Speaker 11: Mike, obviously Drew's got a lot of experience playing, backing
- 26:48Speaker 11: up in the league.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Jalen doesn't.
- 26:50Speaker 11: So do you have to adjust your plan for him
- 26:53Speaker 11: as a backup this week and how you would handle
- 26:55Speaker 11: that as opposed to.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Drew with the reps you try to give him?
- 26:57Speaker 11: Or how do you kind of manage that now that
- 26:59Speaker 11: he's kind of in the backup seat for this week?
- 27:05Speaker 8: I'm sure we'll tweak some sort of the some part
- 27:09Speaker 8: of the process in terms of numbers.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:13Speaker 7: Jalen's not going to get no reps. Let's put it
- 27:15Speaker 7: that way.
- 27:17Speaker 9: When you first took over as head coach, what priority
- 27:24Speaker 9: was it to have an experienced backup quarterback who has
- 27:27Speaker 9: started in the league?
- 27:29Speaker 2: That's the way your team has been here for the
- 27:31Speaker 2: last nine years or so, but that wasn't always the case.
- 27:35Speaker 8: I don't specifically have in that exact conversation with John
- 27:39Speaker 8: on what our approach was.
- 27:40Speaker 7: I think we were just trying to get the best
- 27:45Speaker 7: players we could possibly get.
- 27:46Speaker 10: How are you feeling about Nicky Manwari and Torrey Horton
- 27:49Speaker 10: and their potential availability this week?
- 27:52Speaker 8: Yeah, those guys are doing great. They're going to practice today,
- 27:57Speaker 8: and we'll go from there.
- 28:00Speaker 10: When it comes to Drew, obviously what he was able
- 28:01Speaker 10: to do against the Patriots and then a few years
- 28:03Speaker 10: before he got here, he had that big Monday.
- 28:05Speaker 7: Nighter against the Eagles that time in the 23rd.
- 28:08Speaker 3: What is it about him that he's in this back
- 28:09Speaker 3: of his numbers called? He always seems to have these
- 28:12Speaker 3: great performances of relief like that.
- 28:15Speaker 8: Well, I think it's my same answer from earlier. Drew's
- 28:21Speaker 8: a proven really good player in this league. And when
- 28:24Speaker 8: he started, he's played really good football. And then when
- 28:27Speaker 8: he's been on our team since I've seen him play
- 28:31Speaker 8: in person, he's a heck of a player here. So
- 28:34Speaker 8: it's a heck of a guy, a heck of a teammate.
- 28:39Speaker 8: He's got a great balance about him of being a,
- 28:42Speaker 8: being like a true professional, but also he's a loose
- 28:45Speaker 8: and focused guy. You know, he's a, he's a warrior
- 28:47Speaker 8: in the garden. He's a, all the things that we
- 28:49Speaker 8: want from our, from our players. He's that at the
- 28:51Speaker 8: quarterback position.
- 28:52Speaker 7: Any updates on Ernest Jones for this week? I don't
- 28:55Speaker 7: think we saw him at practice on Monday. Yeah, he was,
- 28:57Speaker 7: he was sick on Monday. He's good to go.
- 29:00Speaker 8: You know, we got to, not that we're not, but
- 29:02Speaker 8: there's an urgency of, of taking our game and our
- 29:06Speaker 8: team and our individual performances to another level.
- 29:08Speaker 7: And that's, that's what we're trying to do today.
- 29:11Speaker 9: Back with Sam Darnold, can he do anything, or is
- 29:13Speaker 9: he totally shut down, rehab.
- 29:16Speaker 7: Training, anything like that?
- 29:18Speaker 8: He's killing it on his rehab. He's doing a great job.
- 29:21Speaker 8: He's doing a lot right now. He's not going to
- 29:24Speaker 8: be able to play this week.
- 29:27Speaker 2: That was Coach Mike McDonald yesterday at Seahawk headquarters out
- 29:30Speaker 2: here in Renton. It was interesting him talking about Darnold
- 29:34Speaker 2: killing his rehab and doing a lot, not just sitting
- 29:36Speaker 2: around resting, and then 10 minutes later, I'm watching him
- 29:40Speaker 2: carry his cleats outside. And then Darnold is throwing passes
- 29:43Speaker 2: and running dropbacks and doing that before practice on the side.
- 29:48Speaker 2: So Jessamyn, there's a reason they haven't put him on
- 29:50Speaker 2: injured reserve. They think he's going to be back within
- 29:52Speaker 2: four weeks for sure.
- 29:54Speaker 3: That's the most encouraging thing that I could see out
- 29:56Speaker 3: of that.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Correct. And the fact that he was throwing seven days
- 30:01Speaker 2: after being injured and was in cleats, suggests that it is,
- 30:05Speaker 2: as the Seahawks have said, this is a short-term issue.
- 30:08Speaker 2: But Drew Locke will start this week. Now, the backup
- 30:11Speaker 2: quarterback reps, we've talked about this. Jalen Milrow is going
- 30:15Speaker 2: to get and has been getting one-team reps this week,
- 30:17Speaker 2: and that's unusual. We've talked about how a starting quarterback
- 30:20Speaker 2: gets all the reps and that there are relatively limited
- 30:23Speaker 2: opportunities for a starting quarterback to practice the game plan
- 30:25Speaker 2: between games in an NFL regular season. But what the
- 30:29Speaker 2: Seahawks and Brian Fleury, the new offense coordinator, and Mike
- 30:31Speaker 2: McDonald are trying to avoid here is what Drew Locke
- 30:35Speaker 2: ran into last week, which was not practicing the game
- 30:38Speaker 2: plan at all and then be forced into playing. Jalen
- 30:42Speaker 2: Milrow has done game plans even fewer times as in
- 30:47Speaker 2: next to zero with the starting offense the last two
- 30:51Speaker 2: seasons while he's been in the league since they drafted
- 30:53Speaker 2: him out of Alabama in the spring of 2025. I
- 30:56Speaker 2: asked Cooper Cupp yesterday, Just how often have you caught
- 31:00Speaker 2: passes and run plays in practices with the ones, with
- 31:04Speaker 2: Drew Locke as your quarterback the last two seasons, counting
- 31:07Speaker 2: all last season when Donald played all the games? And
- 31:10Speaker 2: he looked at me like he couldn't even think of
- 31:11Speaker 2: any times. And he said, finally, a few. I said,
- 31:15Speaker 2: maybe 10 times in 21 game weeks? And he looked
- 31:18Speaker 2: at me and said, yeah, maybe 10, if that. So
- 31:23Speaker 2: it's next to never that Locke had been practicing game
- 31:26Speaker 2: plan-specific plays in for any given opponent. They played 20
- 31:29Speaker 2: games last season, of course, and then one last week. Well,
- 31:32Speaker 2: they want to avoid that with Milrow. If Locke, for
- 31:35Speaker 2: some reason, gets hurt and Milrow has to play on
- 31:37Speaker 2: Sunday in Arizona, they want him to have at least
- 31:40Speaker 2: practiced some of the game plan plays. So he's getting
- 31:44Speaker 2: one time this week. What it does do, though, is
- 31:47Speaker 2: it divides Jalen Milrow's time. Not that it's a primary concern,
- 31:51Speaker 2: but he's the scout team quarterback. And he runs Jacoby
- 31:55Speaker 2: Brissett and the Cardinals plays. and now he's doing the
- 31:58Speaker 2: Cardinals plays and the Seahawks plays this week.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a mental load.
- 32:02Speaker 2: It is a mental load. It's not that it's an
- 32:04Speaker 2: impossible task, but it does make you think, well, maybe
- 32:08Speaker 2: they would sign a third quarterback or a quarterback to
- 32:11Speaker 2: the practice squad just to run the scout team. And
- 32:13Speaker 2: that's why you heard me ask Mike McDonald the question,
- 32:15Speaker 2: are you okay to roll with just two quarterbacks, or
- 32:17Speaker 2: are you going to think about signing a third one?
- 32:20Speaker 2: And he said, no, we're just going to roll with
- 32:21Speaker 2: these two, so they won't even add a practice squad
- 32:24Speaker 2: one to run scout team reps, and they're just going
- 32:26Speaker 2: to roll with Milrow. and Locke, but it is a
- 32:29Speaker 2: departure from the norm this week, practice week, for the
- 32:32Speaker 2: Seahawks at quarterback that Jalen Milrow is getting any times
- 32:34Speaker 2: with the ones at all, again, to avoid the Drew
- 32:37Speaker 2: Locke situation. I mean, you'd rather have Drew Locke, a
- 32:40Speaker 2: veteran of eight NFL seasons and a former NFL starter,
- 32:43Speaker 2: do what he did last week with no prep in
- 32:46Speaker 2: the game plan and practice than Jalen Milrow, who never
- 32:49Speaker 2: has done that. And so that's the difference. That's why
- 32:51Speaker 2: Milrow's got a double duty this week.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that happens, but I also think that's
- 32:56Speaker 3: a learning moment.
- 32:58Speaker 4: For a young quarterback to have to play both sides,
- 33:00Speaker 4: it's a chess match and you learn both opponents at
- 33:03Speaker 4: the same time.
- 33:04Speaker 3: And I think that might benefit him.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Sure. And it also gives the Seahawks an indication of
- 33:08Speaker 2: how much he can handle and how much they can
- 33:10Speaker 2: throw at him and where his progress is.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Learning on all sides.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Up next, the Mariners are still playing. There's nine games
- 33:18Speaker 2: left of the season that now needs to end, doesn't it?
- 33:21Speaker 2: Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic. reporting today about Dan Wilson,
- 33:26Speaker 2: his future as a manager, and Rosenthal also surmised what
- 33:30Speaker 2: should happen with Jerry DiPoto, and maybe is he not
- 33:32Speaker 2: the one responsible for all of this? His season has
- 33:35Speaker 2: been so bad, Rosenthal raises the specter that maybe Mariner's
- 33:40Speaker 2: ownership changes at the very top of the organization. We'll
- 33:42Speaker 2: talk about the possibility of that and why from where
- 33:45Speaker 2: we sit, this isn't going to happen, though it should.
- 33:48Speaker 2: That's next. Your comments, your talkbacks, we'll read them back.
- 33:51Speaker 2: We'll play them back at 11.30. Factor Fiction, our pick
- 33:54Speaker 2: Of college or pro games, your chance to win $ 1, 000
- 33:56Speaker 2: from the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort starts at $ 11. 35. All
- 34:00Speaker 2: coming up here from Seahawks headquarters on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome
- 34:27Speaker 2: back to Seahawks Headquarters at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in sunny,
- 34:30Speaker 2: beautiful blue sky Renton, Washington. Jessamyn McIntyre, I'm sorry, is
- 34:34Speaker 2: not in sunny, beautiful blue sky.
- 34:35Speaker 3: I'm in a darkness retreat. Aaron Rodgers-ing.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Zenning at the Elliott Bay Studios back in Seattle. Jessamyn's
- 34:44Speaker 2: going to be on the sidelines Saturday in Martin Stadium
- 34:46Speaker 2: in Pullman. That's where Washington State is hosting Duquesne. That's
- 34:51Speaker 2: the softer touch on the Cougs' schedule before their new
- 34:54Speaker 2: Pac-12 regular season season. Conference schedule begins.
- 34:57Speaker 4: And we didn't exactly start the season out with an
- 35:00Speaker 4: easy couple rounds.
- 35:02Speaker 2: No, the Apple Cup and then at Kansas State and
- 35:05Speaker 2: a little apple in Manhattan. Neither of them went well
- 35:07Speaker 2: for the Cougs, but they hope to get their first
- 35:09Speaker 2: win of the season against big underdog Duquesne. I mean,
- 35:13Speaker 2: it's like a 35-point spread or something in that game.
- 35:15Speaker 2: By the way, incidentally, yesterday, our factor fiction pick, I
- 35:18Speaker 2: picked Eastern Washington getting 43 points at Washington and Husky
- 35:22Speaker 2: Stadium on Saturday at 415 here on KJR. And we
- 35:26Speaker 2: made the almost joke that can Washington's offense score 43 points?
- 35:31Speaker 2: Cooper Cobb is an Eastern Washington Eag, Seahawks wide receiver.
- 35:34Speaker 2: He was the Walter Payton Award winner as the best
- 35:36Speaker 2: player in the football championship subdivision when he was at Eastern.
- 35:40Speaker 2: And we asked him yesterday about that and the fact
- 35:42Speaker 2: that his Eags are 43-point underdogs. And Cooper Cobb's response was,
- 35:48Speaker 2: I think that's a little egregious.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 35:50Speaker 4: He has a big diction too.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
- 35:57Speaker 4: I'm not going to nerd alert Cooper crop, but that's
- 36:00Speaker 4: pretty good.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Davis high school and Yakima's Cooper cup. He won't. I
- 36:05Speaker 2: heard some, I think it was Chuck or one of
- 36:07Speaker 2: the hosts on our show. I think it was Chuck
- 36:08Speaker 2: the other day, just wondering aloud if Cooper couple stopped
- 36:12Speaker 2: by Husky stadium to watch the Huskies and the Cougs.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And I mean, the Huskies and the Eags. And he said, no,
- 36:17Speaker 2: or he, He wanted to be, and the answer to
- 36:18Speaker 2: that is no. My point is the Seahawks are traveling
- 36:21Speaker 2: on Saturday afternoon for the game on Sunday, so Cooper
- 36:24Speaker 2: Cupps is going to be doing his normal job with
- 36:25Speaker 2: the Seahawks flying to Phoenix for the game. On Sunday,
- 36:30Speaker 2: the Mariners are still on a nine-game road trip. They
- 36:34Speaker 2: lost the series in Sacramento to the Lowly A's. They
- 36:37Speaker 2: lost the series in Anaheim to the Lowly Angels. This
- 36:41Speaker 2: morning in the Athletic, Ken Rosenthal said, has a story
- 36:44Speaker 2: up that says Dan Wilson is the manager most likely
- 36:47Speaker 2: to be fired at the end of this major league season.
- 36:50Speaker 2: We keep maintaining on this show that we think they're
- 36:53Speaker 2: just going to gracefully exit Dan Wilson, and Wilson may
- 36:56Speaker 2: in fact just say, okay, I'm done at the end
- 36:57Speaker 2: of the season, and go back to doing what he
- 37:00Speaker 2: was doing before Jerry DiPoto tapped him, or John Stanton,
- 37:03Speaker 2: more to the point, tapped him, to come in and
- 37:05Speaker 2: replace Scott Cervas. But then Rosenthal goes on to say
- 37:09Speaker 2: this season has been so bad that How will the
- 37:15Speaker 2: Mariners fix this mess, is what he writes. And he
- 37:18Speaker 2: also writes, Seattle has reached the postseason only twice in
- 37:21Speaker 2: 11 years. We don't have to be reminded of that.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Under the president of baseball operations, Jerry DiPoto. But there
- 37:26Speaker 2: is no indication the team's largely hands-off ownership is interested
- 37:31Speaker 2: in making a change. Wilson and some of his coaches
- 37:34Speaker 2: then figured to be the only casualties. Wilson's leadership was
- 37:38Speaker 2: less than inspiring, sure. But with the underperformance this vast,
- 37:43Speaker 2: The on-field staff can be faulted only so much. That's
- 37:47Speaker 2: from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, pointing fingers at Jerry DiPoto,
- 37:50Speaker 2: the president of baseball operations.
- 37:52Speaker 3: And Ken knows a lot of people.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Which begs a further question. We've talked on this show
- 37:59Speaker 2: of the leadership vacuum in the Mariners organization, the fact
- 38:02Speaker 2: that baseball operations are broken, and the president of baseball
- 38:04Speaker 2: operations should be held accountable for that. But two questions,
- 38:09Speaker 2: one for you on the text line, Do you think
- 38:12Speaker 2: it's in John Stanton and the 20-some owners of the Mariners,
- 38:15Speaker 2: it's in them to fire Jerry DiPoto when they're averaging
- 38:18Speaker 2: 37,000 fans a game, when they are among the top
- 38:22Speaker 2: 10 in revenues, when they are among the middle of
- 38:24Speaker 2: the pack in the bottom half of the league in
- 38:26Speaker 2: player payroll, they don't pay a luxury tax when, in fact,
- 38:29Speaker 2: they receive luxury tax revenues from the highest spending teams
- 38:33Speaker 2: on player payroll, and they are competing to the fringes,
- 38:37Speaker 2: at least contention of the playoffs, into September every year?
- 38:41Speaker 2: I mean, that's the bottom line question here. It isn't
- 38:44Speaker 2: have the Mariners been to the World Series. It is
- 38:47Speaker 2: for the owners, are the Mariners profitable and are they
- 38:50Speaker 2: staying competitive? And competitive is a relative term this year
- 38:54Speaker 2: in the American League and the American League West in particular,
- 38:57Speaker 2: which was so bad that they could be under 500
- 38:59Speaker 2: deep into September and still be in contention mathematically. That's
- 39:05Speaker 2: the question. Do you see Tacoma Dodge text line 49451?
- 39:09Speaker 2: I'd be interested to hear your comments on this. I
- 39:11Speaker 2: think the answer is no because I think the business
- 39:14Speaker 2: operation is so healthy with the Mariners. The attendance is
- 39:17Speaker 2: so good. The revenues are so good. With paying minimally
- 39:22Speaker 2: toward the baseball ops, why would they change? The formula
- 39:25Speaker 2: as a business is working. And that's hot dogs from heaven.
- 39:29Speaker 2: That's fire. That's bobbleheads. That's all of it.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Say the J word.
- 39:33Speaker 2: It's Jimothy. Jimothy's going to go away, though, right? I mean,
- 39:37Speaker 2: Jimothy's going to go away. By the time next season
- 39:39Speaker 2: comes along, that's got to be a flash in the pan.
- 39:42Speaker 2: It was a.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Flash in the pan, but let's just pray for that raccoon.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Really? Yeah. They're so cute.
- 39:49Speaker 3: They're trash pandas.
- 39:51Speaker 2: It's a deformed vermin.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Yes, which means he's beat the odds, which is what
- 39:56Speaker 4: I was hoping the Mariners would do.
- 39:59Speaker 2: All of it's working at the box office, promotions, in-game experiences.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Jessamyn talks about all the time how fun it is
- 40:06Speaker 2: to go to a ballgame. It's true. And it's the
- 40:09Speaker 2: blue sky and 75 degrees in summer in Seattle and
- 40:13Speaker 2: all of it.
- 40:13Speaker 4: As I was saying at the top of the show,
- 40:15Speaker 4: it is a very nice time at the ballpark.
- 40:18Speaker 2: It is. Yet, is that the objective here? Is the
- 40:21Speaker 2: objective to win the World Series or is it to
- 40:23Speaker 2: be a successful, profitable business enterprise?
- 40:26Speaker 12: Both, Greg.
- 40:28Speaker 2: It's both. Well, I would say that.
- 40:30Speaker 3: That is a separate operation.
- 40:32Speaker 2: It shouldn't be. I would submit that the accent's on
- 40:37Speaker 2: the wrong syllable in Seattle in baseball.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Okay, here we go. Now I get to do it.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Well, syllable's not a.
- 40:47Speaker 3: When you say it like that, it is.
- 40:51Speaker 2: They're so... I mean, I think it's a function of
- 40:55Speaker 2: the Mariners being owned by two dozen owners. If they
- 40:57Speaker 2: had a singular owner, or even a couple owners, or
- 41:00Speaker 2: maybe even the Seahawks situation of 15 owners... not 24
- 41:04Speaker 2: or 5. There would be fewer opportunities for people to
- 41:08Speaker 2: just care about the bottom line investment and care more
- 41:11Speaker 2: about the product on the field. If you had a
- 41:14Speaker 2: singular owner or just a couple, you wouldn't have as
- 41:17Speaker 2: many mouths to feed, as many investors to keep happy
- 41:21Speaker 2: from a business proposition standpoint. But the Mariners do. And
- 41:25Speaker 2: so they have to keep the business and enterprise happy,
- 41:29Speaker 2: the investors, the 25 co-owners happy. And they How do
- 41:33Speaker 2: you keep co-investors happy that may not care about baseball
- 41:36Speaker 2: on the field? Make money. Drop hot dogs from heaven
- 41:40Speaker 2: and pack the yard at $ 42, 000 on a weekday afternoon
- 41:43Speaker 2: when you're a sub-500 team.
- 41:44Speaker 3: You've been really good at that.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Exactly. So all the 24 co-owners are thinking, John Stanton,
- 41:51Speaker 2: keep doing what you're doing. Jerry DiPoto works for me.
- 41:53Speaker 2: All good. Well, yeah, we haven't made the World Series.
- 41:56Speaker 2: So what? We're making money. We're profitable. We're not paying
- 41:59Speaker 2: luxury tax. This works. This has been a great investment.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I love my money being in the Mariners. I think
- 42:05Speaker 2: that's the root of all of this. And that, to me,
- 42:08Speaker 2: is why John Stanton and the owners will not change
- 42:10Speaker 2: and not fire Jerry DiPoto when they should. If you
- 42:13Speaker 2: were more worried about the on-the-field product and making the
- 42:16Speaker 2: World Series, that move would have happened years ago. But
- 42:19Speaker 2: they aren't. So it hasn't. And that's why I think
- 42:21Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto stays. Now the question is, how do you
- 42:24Speaker 2: get out of the cycle of a yes-man manager who
- 42:27Speaker 2: has no managerial experience who will just push the iPad
- 42:30Speaker 2: buttons for you? That has to change. Will it under DiPoto?
- 42:34Speaker 2: That's the question to me that determines how successful the
- 42:36Speaker 2: Mariners are getting out of this mess from this season.
- 42:40Speaker 2: 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. We'll read back
- 42:42Speaker 2: your text at 1130. But up next, we're going to
- 42:44Speaker 2: go to Phoenix. A.Q. Shipley is the radio analyst on
- 42:48Speaker 2: the play-by-play broadcast of the Cardinals, the Arizona Cardinals broadcast.
- 42:52Speaker 2: They're just coming off a big win in the Chargers
- 42:54Speaker 2: in Los Angeles last weekend for their opener. A surprising win.
- 42:58Speaker 2: And now they're hosting the Seahawks on Sunday. The Cardinals'
- 43:00Speaker 2: perspective of the Seahawks game on Sunday is up next
- 43:02Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. Hello from Seahawks headquarters. Headlines are brought
- 43:21Speaker 2: to you by Frostbrew Coors Light. As cold as the Rockies,
- 43:24Speaker 2: AQ Shipley, radio analyst for the Cardinals in Arizona, joins
- 43:27Speaker 2: us right after these headlines. Seahawks practice, Sam Donald was
- 43:30Speaker 2: in cleats, thrown off to the side, doing dropbacks before
- 43:33Speaker 2: practice yesterday, seven days after he strained his glute and
- 43:36Speaker 2: left the season opener after just five plays. Donald did
- 43:39Speaker 2: not practice yesterday. Drew Locke did, and he's going to
- 43:41Speaker 2: start on Sunday at Arizona. Coach Mike McDonald said the
- 43:44Speaker 2: team will roll with just two quarterbacks, Locke and Jalen Milrow,
- 43:48Speaker 2: and not sign another one. Nicky Manwari was in full pads,
- 43:51Speaker 2: but again, limited in practice yesterday. Safety hasn't fully practiced
- 43:55Speaker 2: since mid-June. He had arthroscopic surgery on the ankle, of course,
- 43:57Speaker 2: in July. But wide receiver Torrey Horton was full go
- 44:01Speaker 2: yesterday on track to make his season debut Sunday against
- 44:04Speaker 2: the Cardinals. Week two of the NFL season begins tonight
- 44:06Speaker 2: in Buffalo or outside Buffalo in Orchard Park, New York.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Detroit coming off an overtime win over the Saints, playing
- 44:12Speaker 2: the Bills in their first game at their new Palace Stadium,
- 44:14Speaker 2: their first regular season game. Mariners, yeah, they're still playing.
- 44:18Speaker 2: They won last night at Anaheim, too little too late.
- 44:20Speaker 2: They've lost both the series at the A's and the
- 44:23Speaker 2: Angels to begin this nine-game road trip. Nine games left
- 44:26Speaker 2: in the most disappointing, frustrating season in franchise history. The
- 44:29Speaker 2: text line is blowing up about your opinions about Jerry DiPoto,
- 44:32Speaker 2: and most of you share the opinion I have about him.
- 44:35Speaker 2: See you later, but that's not going to happen. The
- 44:37Speaker 2: Storm return from the WNBA break from the World Basketball
- 44:40Speaker 2: Championships tonight. They're hosting the Las Vegas Aces at Climate
- 44:43Speaker 2: Pledge Arena. The Washington Huskies are hosting Eastern Washington on
- 44:47Speaker 2: Saturday at Husky Stadium 415, right here live on your
- 44:50Speaker 2: home of the Huskies, 93.3 KJR FM. We're also the
- 44:53Speaker 2: home of the Kraken, who are starting training camp today,
- 44:56Speaker 2: NHL training camp at the Kraken Community Iceplex in Northgate.
- 44:59Speaker 2: The Winnipeg Jets are starting their training camp and suspending
- 45:02Speaker 2: star goalie, 2025 NHL MVP, Connor Hellebug. He hasn't reported
- 45:07Speaker 2: to training camp, so they've suspended him. College football, former
- 45:12Speaker 2: Washington Huskies defensive coordinator Steve Belichick resigned today as the
- 45:15Speaker 2: North Carolina defensive coordinator after an internal investigation by the
- 45:19Speaker 2: school into the football program's culture under his father, head
- 45:23Speaker 2: coach Bill Belichick. UNC announced the finding of its investigation
- 45:27Speaker 2: today in conjunction with Steve Belichick's resignation, saying in a
- 45:31Speaker 2: statement that the probe revealed, quote, isolated disregard for values
- 45:35Speaker 2: and standards of conduct in the UNC program. The Seahawks
- 45:41Speaker 2: are practicing again today here at Seahawks headquarters, which is
- 45:43Speaker 2: why I'm here. Drew Locke's going to be the number
- 45:46Speaker 2: one quarterback, as he will Sunday, when the Seahawks play
- 45:48Speaker 2: week two at the Arizona Cardinals, who are coming off
- 45:52Speaker 2: an upset win at the Los Angeles Chargers last weekend.
- 45:56Speaker 2: So why not go live to Phoenix, to the desert,
- 45:59Speaker 2: to find out the Cardinals' side of this showdown in
- 46:02Speaker 2: the NFC West. Week two on Sunday, and that's A.Q. Shipley.
- 46:06Speaker 2: He's the radio analyst for the Cardinals radio broadcast. He
- 46:09Speaker 2: joins us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline, former NFL player,
- 46:12Speaker 2: former Cardinals starter. He's also from my neck of the woods, Coriopolis, Pennsylvania. Hello, sir.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I grew up in Steubenville, Ohio, about 30 minutes west
- 46:20Speaker 2: of the airport where you grew up in Pittsburgh. Hello, sir.
- 46:22Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go. Steubenville Pike.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I know a lot about that. All right. There you go.
- 46:28Speaker 2: The wave pool? They had the wave pool when I
- 46:30Speaker 2: was growing up there in Tonydale. That's right. That's right.
- 46:33Speaker 2: That's right. Well, sir, I got to ask you, you're
- 46:37Speaker 2: the Cardinals broadcaster, so perhaps it didn't surprise you as
- 46:40Speaker 2: much as it did everybody else, but did it surprise
- 46:42Speaker 2: you how the Cardinals handled the Chargers? Dominating time at possession,
- 46:46Speaker 2: 37 and a half minutes to 22 and a half,
- 46:48Speaker 2: running the ball, balanced offense, a defense holding the Chargers
- 46:52Speaker 2: at just 268 yards and 51 plays. What stood out
- 46:56Speaker 2: to you about how the Birds took down the Chargers
- 46:58Speaker 2: last week?
- 47:00Speaker 5: Well, I think when you look at their offense, that
- 47:02Speaker 5: was the one thing that did not surprise me. I
- 47:05Speaker 5: think we watched the entire preseason. We watched the sequencing
- 47:08Speaker 5: of plays and the way that Coach LaFleur called plays
- 47:12Speaker 5: all preseason and had success with the second team, the
- 47:15Speaker 5: third team, the fourth team. The first team, I think,
- 47:17Speaker 5: only got one drive against the Raiders. Trey McBride only
- 47:19Speaker 5: played one play. So there was a lot of guys
- 47:21Speaker 5: on the offensive side of the football team that didn't
- 47:23Speaker 5: play a lot. So the twos, threes, and fours executed
- 47:25Speaker 5: that offense and put up a lot of yards and
- 47:28Speaker 5: some points. And I was like, okay, I can see
- 47:30Speaker 5: exactly where this is going once you input the starter.
- 47:33Speaker 5: So that side of the ball did not surprise me.
- 47:35Speaker 5: The other side, going into the season, I think everybody
- 47:38Speaker 5: looked at it and was like, okay, this defense is
- 47:39Speaker 5: not going to be very good. In order for the
- 47:42Speaker 5: Cardinals to have to win games, they're going to have
- 47:43Speaker 5: to get into shootouts and just outscore people. Well, that
- 47:47Speaker 5: wasn't the case. The defense showed up. They played well
- 47:50Speaker 5: up front. They stopped the run, and then in the
- 47:52Speaker 5: pass game, I thought, you know, free agent acquisition, Dewey
- 47:55Speaker 5: Wingard was a massive piece to the puzzle, and then
- 47:57Speaker 5: Mack Wilson, who was hurt a lot last year, he
- 48:00Speaker 5: comes back at linebacker, and he played exceptionally well.
- 48:04Speaker 2: That defense, it's mainly a 3-4, right? And it's changed
- 48:10Speaker 2: a lot since the Todd Bowles era and the way
- 48:12Speaker 2: they blitz a lot. What's signature now? I'm thinking Cardinals, blitzing,
- 48:17Speaker 2: pressure defenses from the past. How different or the same
- 48:20Speaker 2: is it from then?
- 48:23Speaker 5: It's honestly, I mean, I've been with Todd Bowles as
- 48:25Speaker 5: a player a long time, whenever I was obviously with
- 48:28Speaker 5: the Cardinals and down in Tampa Bay, I got to
- 48:30Speaker 5: play with him as my defensive coordinator and then obviously
- 48:33Speaker 5: coach with him as a defensive coordinator. And so whenever
- 48:36Speaker 5: I think of that defense, I think the structure is
- 48:39Speaker 5: 3-4 and I think the structure is heavy blitz, right?
- 48:41Speaker 5: I think Nick Rawless is more of a And Jonathan Gannon,
- 48:46Speaker 5: who was the former head coach here, he came up
- 48:48Speaker 5: under his wings and, you know, almost like a Brian Flores,
- 48:52Speaker 5: Eber Flus kind of hybrid in that system. And so
- 48:56Speaker 5: what that is more, it's heavy five DBs. You're playing
- 48:59Speaker 5: heavy nickel. You're playing five guys up front, which is
- 49:02Speaker 5: going to give you a 3-4 structure on the front.
- 49:05Speaker 5: But on the back end, it's all the crazy combinations
- 49:08Speaker 5: they can do with one linebacker or two, mostly one linebacker.
- 49:12Speaker 5: And then you get all these different 5 or 6
- 49:14Speaker 5: DB combinations, and you don't know if Buda Baker's playing
- 49:17Speaker 5: linebacker and blitzing or if he's playing the deep third
- 49:19Speaker 5: and center.
- 49:20Speaker 2: And coverage.
- 49:20Speaker 5: And so I think that's where it gets confusing, especially
- 49:24Speaker 5: from an offensive line standpoint, which is my expertise, is
- 49:27Speaker 5: being able to identify these guys and where they are
- 49:30Speaker 5: in the run schemes because do you count Buda Baker
- 49:33Speaker 5: as a linebacker? Do you count him as a safety?
- 49:34Speaker 5: Do you count Dewey Winger as a linebacker? Do you
- 49:37Speaker 5: count him as a safety?
- 49:38Speaker 2: How do you expect the Cardinals to handle Jackson Smith
- 49:41Speaker 2: and Jigba, AQ? Smith and Jigba had five of the
- 49:44Speaker 2: first seven catches the other night against the Patriots. Again,
- 49:47Speaker 2: the preponderance of targets went his way. Now you've got
- 49:50Speaker 2: Drew Locke in the backup quarterback who's probably going to
- 49:52Speaker 2: rely when he does pass the ball to Jackson Smith
- 49:55Speaker 2: and Jigba. Do you expect the Cardinals to shell? Do
- 49:59Speaker 2: you expect them to really shade to him? How do
- 50:02Speaker 2: you expect them to defend with all those defensive backs
- 50:04Speaker 2: you're talking about?
- 50:06Speaker 5: I guess the question is, has anybody been able to
- 50:08Speaker 5: stop Jackson Smith and Jigba? I think that's probably the
- 50:12Speaker 5: question right now, right? He's the Offensive Player of the
- 50:14Speaker 5: Year for a reason. You see him take a five-yard
- 50:17Speaker 5: stop route into whatever it was, 50-60 the other day.
- 50:20Speaker 5: I mean, he's a dynamic player. He's a special player.
- 50:23Speaker 5: You know, if I'm sitting there putting my coaching brain
- 50:25Speaker 5: and coaching thinking out there, I try and do what
- 50:27Speaker 5: Bill Belichick did and what made Bill Belichick special for
- 50:30Speaker 5: all those years, and that was, okay, let's try and
- 50:33Speaker 5: eliminate him, whether it's double-team him, shade to him, whatever
- 50:37Speaker 5: it may be, but let's try and let the other
- 50:38Speaker 5: guys beat us. And I think with, you know, a
- 50:41Speaker 5: backup quarterback who obviously showed that he can play just
- 50:44Speaker 5: as well in this system, which only speaks to how
- 50:47Speaker 5: good of a coach, you know, offensively they have up there.
- 50:50Speaker 5: And so I think what you try and do is
- 50:52Speaker 5: you try and try and win first and second down.
- 50:56Speaker 5: That is the biggest way to beat anybody. And especially
- 50:58Speaker 5: in explosive offense, you try and win first and second down.
- 51:01Speaker 5: So try and stop the run, load the box, trying
- 51:04Speaker 5: to eliminate the easy passes, which are the play actions, right?
- 51:07Speaker 5: If you stop the run, you can kind of eliminate
- 51:08Speaker 5: the play actions and get you into a third and
- 51:11Speaker 5: drop back game. And that's the game that you want
- 51:13Speaker 5: to live in, especially on defense, especially against a very
- 51:15Speaker 5: good offense with as much talent as they have in Seattle.
- 51:18Speaker 2: This is A.Q. Shipley, 12-year NFL offensive lineman, Pittsburgh area native.
- 51:22Speaker 2: He's the Cardinals radio broadcaster here joining us on 93.3
- 51:25Speaker 2: KJR FM about the Seahawks-Cardinals game on Saturday, Sunday in Glendale.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Chargers game last week for the Cardinals, 44% outside zone
- 51:33Speaker 2: runs by Arizona's offense. You being an offensive lineman, that
- 51:36Speaker 2: tells me the key to Arizona's offense are the tackles.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Paris Johnson, Trey McBride, Elijah Wilkinson, Trey McBride, the tight end,
- 51:44Speaker 2: the blocking with the tackles. How central is that? Do
- 51:48Speaker 2: you think that's going to be a consistent Arizona 40-plus
- 51:51Speaker 2: percent outside zone and their heavily reliance on it? And
- 51:55Speaker 2: how are Paris Johnson and Elijah Wilkinson playing in this game?
- 52:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's absolutely what is going to be their bread
- 52:03Speaker 5: and butter. There's no doubt about that. I mean, I
- 52:05Speaker 5: think when you think of what this offense is, think
- 52:07Speaker 5: it's L.A. Rams 2.0. I think when you look at
- 52:10Speaker 5: Sean McVay, if you go back even when he first
- 52:12Speaker 5: got there and Todd Gurley was the running back for
- 52:14Speaker 5: the L.A. Rams, it was primarily only outside zone. There
- 52:18Speaker 5: was really not much off of that. Then as he's evolved,
- 52:22Speaker 5: he's put together a multiple tight end package, a downhill
- 52:25Speaker 5: kind of gap scheme world with it that kind of
- 52:27Speaker 5: complements the outside zone. But I think when you think
- 52:30Speaker 5: of it, it's still heavy outside zone. That's exactly what
- 52:33Speaker 5: Coach LaFleur has brought over here. The unique thing about
- 52:36Speaker 5: him is he has worked for, in my opinion, the
- 52:38Speaker 5: two best offensive coaches in all of football. And, you know,
- 52:41Speaker 5: over the last seven years, he's been with the LA
- 52:42Speaker 5: Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. So he's going to
- 52:45Speaker 5: bring an element of both of those offenses, which, again,
- 52:49Speaker 5: both live heavily in the outside zone world. So that's
- 52:52Speaker 5: going to be the bread and butter. And then what
- 52:54Speaker 5: do they do off of that? Is it going to
- 52:55Speaker 5: be gap scheme? Is it going to be heavy play
- 52:57Speaker 5: action off of that? You also have a 6'6, 250-pound
- 53:01Speaker 5: quarterback who looks like a glorified defensive end back there.
- 53:05Speaker 5: So there is a little bit more of an element
- 53:06Speaker 5: of drop-back pass because he's able to see over the
- 53:08Speaker 5: line and do all that stuff. But, yeah, I think
- 53:12Speaker 5: when you talk about it, it's Paris Johnson, it's Elijah Wilkinson,
- 53:15Speaker 5: it's the multiple tight end sets, it's whether you're keeping
- 53:18Speaker 5: them to the side or you're running the play action. But, yes,
- 53:21Speaker 5: it's a heavy outside zone world.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Let me ask you about the quarterback, Jacoby Brissett. They've
- 53:26Speaker 2: got Gardner Minshew there as well, but Brissette, the starter,
- 53:28Speaker 2: the contract situation in the offseason resolving itself. Cardinals say,
- 53:31Speaker 2: here's your money, and he took it. How are they different?
- 53:36Speaker 2: How do they play? You mentioned how big he is.
- 53:38Speaker 2: He's still a running threat even though he's up in
- 53:40Speaker 2: age now, but Jacoby Brissette, what's the Cardinals' offense like
- 53:44Speaker 2: with him as quarterback?
- 53:46Speaker 5: Listen, I love Jacoby Brissette. I don't think he gets
- 53:49Speaker 5: enough credit. I heard Richard Sherman, who's one of your guys'
- 53:52Speaker 5: all-time greats, talk this week about the same exact thing
- 53:55Speaker 5: that He doesn't get enough credit. I mean, he's just
- 53:58Speaker 5: only been efficient every single place he's ever been. He
- 54:01Speaker 5: goes to Indianapolis, and you have the whole Andrew Luck fiasco,
- 54:04Speaker 5: and he steps in, and he plays well. Do they
- 54:07Speaker 5: win at all? Do they win a bunch of games
- 54:09Speaker 5: and get to the playoffs? No, but he's been efficient.
- 54:12Speaker 5: He's super smart. He's learned from some of the best.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Early on, he gets to sit behind Tom Brady and
- 54:17Speaker 5: learn from him. Then you find out that one of
- 54:20Speaker 5: his biggest mentors is Bill Parcells, one of the greatest
- 54:23Speaker 5: to ever do it. and you find out exactly why
- 54:26Speaker 5: he is who he is, and he's a heck of
- 54:28Speaker 5: a leader. The locker room loves him. He's efficient. Last
- 54:32Speaker 5: week he took, he completes, you know, 17 to 27
- 54:35Speaker 5: throws for 275 yards. And you know, he's, that's who
- 54:39Speaker 5: he gives you. The minute that Kyler goes down last year,
- 54:41Speaker 5: he steps in, you know, he knows exactly what the
- 54:44Speaker 5: progression is, who is number one, number two, number three,
- 54:46Speaker 5: number four outlet is on every single play. If he
- 54:49Speaker 5: gets in trouble, he's able to make some type of move,
- 54:52Speaker 5: and at least keep the play alive. He doesn't turn
- 54:54Speaker 5: the ball over. He's efficient with the ball. That's who
- 54:58Speaker 5: he is. And then you look at the outside, and
- 55:00Speaker 5: we've got a ton of skill here. I mean, Michael
- 55:01Speaker 5: Wilson's become a bona fide superstar. Marvin Harrison is still
- 55:05Speaker 5: trying to come into his own. But then you've got
- 55:06Speaker 5: Trey McBride. You've got Kendrick Bourne, who steps up with
- 55:08Speaker 5: eight catches last week. And you've got a crowded running
- 55:11Speaker 5: back room with Algier and Jeremiah Love. So a ton
- 55:13Speaker 5: of talent for him to throw to and distribute to.
- 55:16Speaker 5: But you're going to see an efficient offense, and you're
- 55:18Speaker 5: going to see him take care of the football.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Let's talk about Algier and Jeremiah Love. Most people think
- 55:24Speaker 2: third overall pick is going to be the number one back,
- 55:26Speaker 2: but yet last week Love got 11 carries and a
- 55:28Speaker 2: touchdown to Algier's 17 carries. Do you expect that to
- 55:32Speaker 2: be the way it goes here Sunday? Are they ramping
- 55:36Speaker 2: Love up and gradually introducing him to the NFL, or
- 55:38Speaker 2: is he going to get the lead back here sooner
- 55:40Speaker 2: than later?
- 55:42Speaker 5: I think what most people, your average casual fans, don't
- 55:46Speaker 5: realize is how different the NFL game is than the
- 55:50Speaker 5: college game. There's so much more that goes into it.
- 55:53Speaker 5: So I think I love what they're doing right now.
- 55:56Speaker 5: I love that they're being patient with them. I think
- 55:58Speaker 5: Tyler Algier is a superstar. He was sitting behind another
- 56:02Speaker 5: superstar and Bijan Robinson. Now he's getting an opportunity to
- 56:05Speaker 5: kind of be the one right now and take advantage
- 56:08Speaker 5: of that opportunity with a guy that's very talented behind them.
- 56:11Speaker 5: But what most people don't understand, it's not just running
- 56:14Speaker 5: the football anymore. I mean, these blitzes are so complex and,
- 56:18Speaker 5: you know, there's so much more. And even so where
- 56:21Speaker 5: it's different than colleges, you know, when you come from
- 56:23Speaker 5: a school like Notre Dame, that you're running through holes
- 56:25Speaker 5: that are seven, seven yards wide. Well, sometimes in the NFL,
- 56:29Speaker 5: if you even go back and look, I've watched, I
- 56:31Speaker 5: do a bunch of stuff nationally for the Pat McAfee show.
- 56:33Speaker 5: And so I watch every game and you watch Brees
- 56:35Speaker 5: Hall skinny through holes that are the size of a crack. Right.
- 56:40Speaker 5: And I think that's the biggest difference that you have
- 56:42Speaker 5: to learn as a college running back when you get
- 56:44Speaker 5: here is is you're not always going to be running
- 56:46Speaker 5: through massive holes like you did in college. So we
- 56:49Speaker 5: got to, we got to be patient. We got to
- 56:51Speaker 5: slow things down. We got to set up our blocks.
- 56:53Speaker 5: We got to understand that the whole disappears very quickly
- 56:56Speaker 5: at this level. And then, Oh, by the way, if
- 56:57Speaker 5: you want to be on the field on third down,
- 56:58Speaker 5: you better understand blitzes and understand protections and understand how
- 57:02Speaker 5: complex these things are, which is a lot to ask
- 57:05Speaker 5: of a rookie running back. I think you guys did
- 57:06Speaker 5: the same thing last week. You could have put Jadarian
- 57:08Speaker 5: price in there for 30, 30, 30 reps. And he
- 57:11Speaker 5: ends up getting what seven carries or whatever it was. And,
- 57:13Speaker 5: 10 carries, I mean, he looked very, very good when
- 57:16Speaker 5: he was in there. But again, same thing. Let's not
- 57:18Speaker 5: load up these rookies' plates too much, especially if there's
- 57:21Speaker 5: a veteran in there that can spell them. And now
- 57:23Speaker 5: you can learn on the fly, and you can get
- 57:25Speaker 5: your feet wet and just gradually ramp up as the
- 57:28Speaker 5: season goes.
- 57:29Speaker 2: Good point by A.Q. Shipley there, the Cardinals radio analyst
- 57:32Speaker 2: talking about the NFL running back. You mentioned the blitzing,
- 57:35Speaker 2: and that's Jeremiah Love. That's Jadarian Price. That's their biggest
- 57:40Speaker 2: thing they need to learn is pass blocking in the
- 57:42Speaker 2: pass game. against modern NFL defenses. He's joining us on
- 57:45Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline from Phoenix. I understand you have
- 57:49Speaker 2: a cross-background with our producer co-host here, Jessamyn McIntyre, with
- 57:52Speaker 2: her father, Coach Mack.
- 57:54Speaker 3: We do.
- 57:55Speaker 4: I mean, I don't think my dad got him because
- 57:57Speaker 4: he ended up going to Penn State. Yeah, we do
- 58:01Speaker 4: have some cross-background, which was so nice to.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Learn, AQ.
- 58:06Speaker 5: Absolutely. I saw the 516 number come in, and I
- 58:09Speaker 5: was like, okay, that's Long Island.
- 58:11Speaker 2: My two.
- 58:12Speaker 5: My two college roommates and two of my best friends
- 58:14Speaker 5: from Penn State were Long Island guys. And then, fortunately
- 58:17Speaker 5: for me, I got drafted to the Pittsburgh Steelers and
- 58:19Speaker 5: longtime NFL offensive lineman Willie Colon, who was one of
- 58:23Speaker 5: my teammates early in my career, actually played at Hofstra. So, yeah,
- 58:27Speaker 5: it's the smallest world ever once you make these connections.
- 58:30Speaker 3: Once it's football. Football is family, in my mind. And
- 58:33Speaker 3: this is why I like making connections. He said, is
- 58:36Speaker 3: that a 5-1-6? And I said, yes, it is.
- 58:39Speaker 2: And then.
- 58:42Speaker 3: What were you going to say? Can you hear me?
- 58:47Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 58:48Speaker 2: We got you.
- 58:49Speaker 5: Thank you. I've always thought the world of Long Island
- 58:53Speaker 5: because they were some of the toughest guys that I
- 58:55Speaker 5: ever played with. Everybody that I ever met that came
- 58:57Speaker 5: from Long Island were tough guys. I mean, this guy,
- 58:59Speaker 5: Rich Ormberg, who I played with, who actually does radio
- 59:03Speaker 5: now in San Diego area, but, I mean, he was
- 59:05Speaker 5: one of the toughest guys I ever played with. Played
- 59:07Speaker 5: at Penn State, got drafted by New England, got a
- 59:09Speaker 5: bunch of starts. in the NFL, San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals. So, yeah,
- 59:14Speaker 5: I got an affinity for Long Island.
- 59:15Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I started bartending when I was 17 down there.
- 59:19Speaker 3: So, yeah, I learned how to be tough. But it's
- 59:23Speaker 3: just amazing.
- 59:23Speaker 4: And I think that our listeners would just love to
- 59:26Speaker 4: hear the fact that we all have these connections through sports.
- 59:31Speaker 3: And I think it's a beautiful thing. So I just
- 59:34Speaker 3: I appreciate, Greg, you bringing that up.
- 59:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no problem. How did Willie Colon hook you up?
- 59:40Speaker 2: When you first got to the Steelers, did he take
- 59:41Speaker 2: care of you under his wing?
- 59:45Speaker 5: I don't think taking care of me is one way
- 59:49Speaker 5: to put it.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Back in those days, it was.
- 59:54Speaker 5: I don't know how much is still going on in
- 59:56Speaker 5: the NFL, but I mean, man, rookies, rookies kind of
- 59:59Speaker 5: had it bad. I don't, I don't want to use
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: the word hazing.
- 1:00:01Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: But I mean, it was, you had to do a
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: lot of stuff.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: And so you always, I mean, you still see the
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: stuff where they have to stand in front of the
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: room and sing and tell their signing bonus and sing
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: a song, whatever it is.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: So that whole thing was going on. He's a great
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: story with Willie and I, and he's become obviously one
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: of my better friends. I learned very quickly kind of, okay, let's,
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: let's respect our elders. Let's, let's, let's get that underhand.
- 1:00:22Speaker 5: But yeah, you know, as a rookie earlier in the
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: day at training camp, we're in St. Vincent college playing
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: for the Pittsburgh Steelers during training camp. I'm at lunch.
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: They're like ship, get up and sing. So I get
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: up and sing. I sing last dance with Mary Jane
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: by Tom Petty. I think I nailed it. Just had
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: to say that first of all, and finish, finish that song.
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: And I'm like, okay, cool. I got my, I got
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: my singing out of the way.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: Well, later on in the day, we have a team meeting.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: Mike Tomlin's the head coach. He's running like a couple
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: minutes behind. So Everybody's like, okay, well, what time does
- 1:00:52Speaker 5: this 2 o'clock meeting start? Coach T's not in yet,
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: so let's send another rookie up. AQ, get up and
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: sing again. I'm like, no, I'm good.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: I'm not singing. I already sang.
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: I already did it today.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: You got a callback. And they're like, oh, yeah.
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: They're like, oh, okay, cool. Like, Rook, you sure you
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: don't want to get up and sing? I'm like, no, no,
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: I'm good. I already did my singing. They're like, well,
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: if we tell you to get up and sing again,
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: you got to get up and sing again. I'm like, no,
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: I'm not doing it. Lo and behold, we go out
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: to practice. I come back. my clothes that I wore
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: to practice, I'd shorts, t-shirt wallet in there, everything tied
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: up in duct tape, connected to a five pound plate
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: at the bottom of the cold plunge, completely frozen, soaking
- 1:01:31Speaker 5: wet wall. It's gone. I got to go in under
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: to get my clothes back, then get them dry. I mean,
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: I was there an extra hour. So lo and behold,
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: there's a, There's my story.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: Wait, Willie did that?
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: All the veterans did. I mean, there was a veteran heavy. Yeah,
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: he was he was he was in on that group.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: I love that group.
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: He came very close with him.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: OK, well, I've got a good Willie story. I was
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: walking through. It was the Super Bowl was in Houston.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: I'm good friends with DQ Dan Quinn, who is now
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: the head coach of the Commanders. And my best friend
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: that I grew up with was working for him at
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: the time. I was working for John Clayton's show and
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: was at the Super Bowl with him. And I overhear
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: someone on Radio Row say Willie Colon's name. And I
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: walked over, immediately hugged him, hadn't seen him in years.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: And then he invites me to a party that night. And,
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: you know, Super Bowl is all parties. So I go.
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: He's got the whole tab covered and everything. And I
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: was like, well, I'm going to buy a round, whatever.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: I will just say it was J.W.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: Are the initials of what he was drinking. And I
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: blew my entire tab on getting him a couple shots.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: And it was so funny. He was to be respectful.
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: He was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: You do not pay. And I was like, I got it, Billy.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I got it. Okay.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: I'm in debt now.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: I'm in debt. Thank you. I got it. I got
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: to ask you what an offensive lineman, 12 years in
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: offensive lineman working with a punter. Pat McAfee has become
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: this WWE-like superstar now. How can an offensive lineman coexist
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: with a punter on the air?
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: I'll tell you what. First things first, he's from Pittsburgh,
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: and I've never met anybody from Pittsburgh I didn't like.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: There you go. So we will start there. And that's
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: honestly how we met. It was funny because he was
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: at the College Football Awards show up for the punter
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: award the same year I was up for the college
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: football and won the Remington Trophy. So we're down there.
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: remember they used to do this big show on ESPN
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: college football. Now it's become virtual, but back in the day,
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: they'd fly everybody into Disney. You're at the Disney boardwalk.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: And we end up kind of meeting that way. And
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: we're like room next to each other. Cause they were,
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: they roomed all the guys based on where you were
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: from regionally. And so like West Virginia, Penn state, right
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: next to each other, we end up like, they're like,
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: they have a curfew for us at like 10. And
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: we're like, we're definitely not going to be there for curfew. Right.
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: Like we're, we should go out and, So him and
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: I go out, have a good time. And actually that
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: was the first night. Lo and behold, you watch college
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: game day every weekend. Who's Pat sitting next to it's
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: Kirk Herbstreet, right? That was the first time that we
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: ever spent some time together with Kirk Herbstreet. He was
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: out at the same bar restaurant that we ended up
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: finding ourselves in at, I don't know, 1130, 12 o'clock
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: at night, whatever it was. And that was our first
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: time kind of hanging out. And here we are years
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: later and we're all kind of interconnected in some way,
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: shape or form. But, Fast forward three years later, I
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: signed with the Indianapolis Colts, and he ends up being
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: in the locker next to me. So we hit it
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: off for three years, and we've been in each other's weddings.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: I mean, we go way back, and Superstar is only
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: the start for him. I mean, he's going to the
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: moon right now.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: Those are amazing stories. I love that. I met Pat
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: McAfee at the Cheez-It Bowl, which.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: He was working for ESPN and I was.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Working for Washington State.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: I am the sideline reporter for our radio broadcast.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Was that in Vegas?
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: Was that in Vegas?
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: No, it was in Arizona, I believe.
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: Oh, that was one in Arizona.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah.
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: And he was sitting on top of a gigantic Cheez-It
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: box and I got to meet him and I'm like, dude,
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: you just like say yes to everything.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: And this is amazing.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: He's incredible.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: He's so good. He's only getting better every year you
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: watch him. He's become the face of ESPN, obviously. He's
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: the smartest guy I've ever been around.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Greg and I were talking last night, and I said
- 1:05:38Speaker 4: offensive linemen were the smartest people, and Greg said the
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: same exact thing.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: So, thank you, AQ.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Yeah, of course. AQ Shipley, thanks for joining us. I'll
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: see you in the press box in Glendale on Sunday.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Thanks a lot, sir.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: Yeah, looking forward to it.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: A.Q. Shipley, longtime NFL offensive line, former center for the
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Arizona Cardinals, former one-time coach for the Cardinals, now the
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: radio analyst for Arizona Cardinals football broadcast. He'll be on
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: the call, the Arizona call, of the Seahawks and Cardinals.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: He says expect outside zone, expect Tyler Algier, quite a
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: bit of it, even though they drafted Jeremiah Love third
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: overall in the draft. Expect a lot of Algier, a
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: lot of outside zone. Against the Seahawks, that puts DeMarcus Lawrence,
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Leonard Williams, who played a lot of defensive end in
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: game one, more defensive end than the defensive tackle for
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: the Seahawks. That's the key guys for the Seahawks against
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: this outside zone. How did Derek Hall set the edge?
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: I mean, the reason they kept Derek Hall over Boye
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Moffey was because he sets the edge on the run.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: How does he do that against the outside zone against
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: the Cardinals? That's going to be a key to Sunday's game.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: In the desert. Up next, your chance to be a
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: part of the show. 49451 on the Comodots text line.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: A lot of comments coming in about Jerry DiPoto and
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: his culpability for this mess with the Mariners. And then
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: we'll read back your text. We'll also do talkbacks, and
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: we'll do the 1135 Factor Fiction, our pick this week.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Resort is coming up next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:07:13Speaker 13: Hey guys, GM Talk here. There are so many young
- 1:07:19Speaker 13: candidates out there, Jess. You go to the Brewers organization,
- 1:07:23Speaker 13: they have about four guys that I would hire right
- 1:07:26Speaker 13: now over Jerry. The Brewers are what the Mariners want
- 1:07:30Speaker 13: to be like, and yet they can't find their way.
- 1:07:33Speaker 13: Hire a smart young guy from the Brewers and just
- 1:07:36Speaker 13: start over. The Mariners will be dog crap under Jerry.
- 1:07:41Speaker 14: A quick comment here on message delivery. Jessamyn, if you
- 1:07:46Speaker 14: could give us a break on the I, me, mine,
- 1:07:51Speaker 14: or my to every sentence, that would be great. Ashley
- 1:07:56Speaker 14: does a great job at it.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: Others do.
- 1:07:59Speaker 14: And it's just an easy thing to learn.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: I do appreciate constructive criticism.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: Sentence started in I.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: I was not aware that I did that all the time. I, me, myself,
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: and I.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: But I will work on it.
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: Those are three I sentences. You're consistent. I like it.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: That's great.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: I do appreciate that. But let's go back to the
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: first one regarding Jerry.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: When he said hire someone from the Milwaukee Brewers, do
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: you know the first person I thought of? This is
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: how it tells you how long I've been in this
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: town covering sports. Jack Zarensik. Oh, my gosh. Jack Z
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: was a former Milwaukee executive. They made a first-time general manager,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: and it was a disaster. It was not good. It
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: wasn't as big of a disappointment as this season was,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: but it was a disaster. That was back when the
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: general manager actually called the shots. That was before. they
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: had an all-overarching president of baseball operations like they do now.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: Rolls have expanded.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Now's your chance to win $ 1, 000. Let's go to Factor Fiction.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: day feels lucky.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR-FM. We're
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: back with Factor Fiction as we are every weekday, 11.35 a.m. Again,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: how it works, Lucky Eagle Casino Resort gives us the
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: opportunity to give you $ 1, 000 each week. All you have
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: to do is win once. You can play up to
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: 20 times of the shows that have five days a week,
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: four shows. 20 times you can play. You only have
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: to win once to get entered in the hopper for
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: your name to be pulled on Monday. Andrews will take
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: the winners from all this week, pull one name out,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Anderson Hurst will, and that name drawn on Monday will
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: be the winner of $ 1, 000. But you don't even have
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: to win this week to still win $ 10, 000 at the
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: end of the contest. In December, it ends on Army-Navy
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Friday when Jessamyn McIntyre and I will be at Times
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Square in New York for the Army-Navy game. That's the
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: final day of the contest, and whoever has won the
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: most times, I should say, picked correctly against or for
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: us and our picks here at KJR, whoever has the
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: most correct answers over the course of the contest, wins
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: $ 10, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Resort. Okay, you
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: hear the NFL music? I'm going a little bit of departure.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: My Army team disappointed us last week.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: It's okay to make a change, Greg.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I took Eastern Washington plus the bushel of 43
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: points yesterday. Now I'm going to go to the NFL,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: and I'm going to go to my hometown, Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: They're coming off a home win over Atlanta. T.J. Watt
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: won it with a line of scrimmage interception and a touchdown.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: The Steelers winning with defense. Sunday they're going to New England.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: We saw the Patriots last week. They held the Seahawks
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: to zero points deep into the second half. The defense
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: seems to be the strength of this team. I thought
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: it was last year going into the Super Bowl, and
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: I don't think Drake May and the offense is all that,
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: especially with only one running back. We talked about the Patriots'
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: troubles on offense last week. So the Steelers are getting
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: 5.5 points at the Patriots. I expect a low-scoring game,
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: neither team getting the 20 points, which says close game.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Give me the Steelers, plus 5.5 at New England. On Sunday,
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: if you agree with me, text FACT to 49451. That
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: is if you want to win $ 1, 000. If you don't
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: want to win $ 1, 000, text FICTION to 49451 if you
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: disagree with my pick. Steelers plus 5.5 points at New England.
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: That means if the Steelers lose the game by five
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: or fewer points, we will all win. See how that works? Yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: If you think New England's going to win by six
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: or more points, then text FICTION and you won't win $ 1, 000.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: It's as simple as that. You have 12 minutes, now
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: 11 minutes, to text in 49451STEELERS plus five and a
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: half at New England.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: I like the pick. I like it a lot, actually.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: A little bit of hometown pick. I'm just not sold
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: on Drake May and the offense. I wasn't going into
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. I'm just not... Oh, man. I just...
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Let's go to the text line, 49451. You pivoted out
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: of that really quickly. I'm tired of talking about the Patriots.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: I just don't think, yeah. 206, couple thoughts on DiPoto.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: I believe he has admitted to not paying attention to
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: clubhouse chemistry enough. Chuck Powell talked about that this morning.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Correct on that observation. Further, however, he also hasn't paid
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: attention enough to defense or speed. Not an athletic group,
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: and the defensive mistakes and failures have been appalling. Some
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: of the failure is motivation and culture, but the only
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: plus defender in the infield is Cole Young. I think
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: he's the MVP of the team, Cole Young. Corner outfield,
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: that's a pretty low bar this year. Corner outfield sparts
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: are abysmal unless Robles plays, which is not often. Hard
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: to watch these guys. 206, unless you think John Stanton
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: really pushed Jerry DiPoto to sign Colton Wong, Ron Refschneider,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Taylor Ward, A.J. Pollock, Mitch Garver, who's responsible for those
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: brilliant signings? Taylor Ward's hitting like 110 since they traded
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: for him.
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: 509.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: Everyone needs to speak with their wallets. Hit ownership where
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: it hurts next season. Boycott DMs to force change. We've
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: talked about this.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: I've heard that before, too, in seasons past.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: But there are so many casual fans in Seattle. People
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: who aren't from here. People who love to come out
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: here in the summer and visit. People that are coming
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: through Seattle on the way to Alaska for cruises. And
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: let's go to a ball game because it's 75 degrees
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: at night. There are so many of those fans... who
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: don't even know the Mariners haven't been to the World Series,
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: nor do they care.
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: They want to go out for a good time at
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: the ballpark.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: And that's why they do a good job at that.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: It's almost as if it would be better off if
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: they were playing in the concrete dome of the kingdom
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: again so that nobody could enjoy the game as much
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: as they do in the setting and actually care about
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: the baseball. Yeah, it is such an interesting dichotomy of–
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: that's another word for it– dichotomy of the Mariners.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: I use that word a lot. That's not nerd alert worthy.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: Not alert.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: No. But it is a juxtaposition that you have.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Okay, that one counts.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: That you have.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: Sorry, it just has to be done.
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: Nerd alert.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: It's such a juxtaposition that you have a huge segment.
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: I mean, like 3.5 million Mariner fans paying through the
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: turnstiles every season that A large percentage of them don't
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: really care about the on-field product being so dysfunctional and
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: so disappointing. But then you have so many more millions
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: that watch on television and are not in Seattle and
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: not in the ballpark or listen on the radio or
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: are in Australia or in Florida. They used to live
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: in Seattle. Those fans are fed up. But those fans
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: aren't the ones paying the freight and buying the tickets
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: and gobbling up the hot dogs from heaven and the
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: bobbleheads and the Funko Pops. It's such a juxtaposition. It
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: is unique to my– I've done this for now 28,
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: 30 years, writing sports since my Army officer career. And
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: I don't remember a team whose fan base is so
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: split between the in-park experience, in-stadium experience, And the reality
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: of everything else, meaning the bottom line of the team.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: It is so different. And when you have 20 plus owners,
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: all they care about is how many butts are in seats.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: And the butts in seats are good. It's a healthy
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: business that the Mariners are running.
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: It is a really good time.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: I mean, you can't deny that.
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: And it's not the fault of that side of things.
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: It is also. So where does the buck stop?
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: 206 says, Greg is dead on regarding large Mariner ownership group.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: I have a daughter who is sitting in an owner's box,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: and she called me. I told her to ask the
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: owner what she thought of the Mariner's ownership group. This
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: owner laughed and said, Mariner fans are screwed. They have
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: way too many people in their ownership group. Anyway, I
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: don't think it's changing. I think Jerry DiPoto's staying because
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: the business is working. And the owners, the 20-plus owners,
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: plus John Stanton, say, bottom line, good. We're getting plus revenues.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: We're doing fine. We're drawing 3.8 million fans, 37,000 a game.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Hot dogs from heaven. It's all working. So, Jerry, keep
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: doing what you're doing. 54%?
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: Sure.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: We didn't even get that this year.
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: We look kind of nice right now.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: We got, what, 48%. Ian Furness is out at the
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: Kraken Community Iceplex because this is the first day of
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: NHL Kraken training camp. We'll talk to him on what
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: he has going on on his show from Puckland next
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back to the Virginia Mason Athletic
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Center Seahawks headquarters live on 93.3 KJR FM. Greg Bell,
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Jessamyn McIntyre. If you missed our talk with A.Q. Shipley,
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: the radio analyst for the Cardinals, go to the iHeartRadio app,
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: 93.3 KJR, or Greg Bell's show on the 93.3 KJR.com website.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: He'd break him down the Cardinals side of the game
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: on Sunday for the Seahawks in Glendale, Arizona. Tomorrow is
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday. You remember that.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: And you remember that every Friday we do high school football.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: We feature a game of the week in the state.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: And tomorrow, I saw the text line 253 saying it
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: should be, tomorrow's game of the week should be Puyallup
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: at Lake Stevens. It easily could be top 4A teams
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: in the state. But we want to spread it around.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: And we had Lake Stevens on two weeks ago with
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: Graham Kapowsin. So tomorrow we're going to feature Archbishop Murphy,
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: class of 2A powers. Archbishop Murphy is going to Anacortes,
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: a battle of one against three in class 2A in
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: our Washington state. And we're going to talk to Archbishop
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Murphy's head coach tomorrow at 11 o'clock. That's on a
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday. Today on Thursday, in
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: addition to the Seahawks practicing out here for the Cardinals
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: game on Sunday, we've got Ian Furness at the Kraken
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: Community Iceplex for pucks because it's the first day of
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: Kraken training camp.
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: Hello, sir.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: It feels too early. It feels too early, my friends.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: It is early, right?
- 1:18:29Speaker 12: I think you know why. I was telling John Forslund,
- 1:18:32Speaker 12: the TV voice of the Kraken, a minute ago. I said,
- 1:18:35Speaker 12: I just– We just finished training camp, it feels like,
- 1:18:38Speaker 12: and not like we're doing anything other than being there,
- 1:18:40Speaker 12: but it's like the nf from a media standpoint oh
- 1:18:44Speaker 12: god this is gonna sound bad but for me standpoint
- 1:18:46Speaker 12: like training camp's a long grind like you know and
- 1:18:48Speaker 12: you more so for guys like you that are there
- 1:18:51Speaker 12: longer than i am but it's a long ride right
- 1:18:53Speaker 12: you're there every day we're doing all these things and
- 1:18:55Speaker 12: and um you know as we're doing all that uh
- 1:18:58Speaker 12: i'm like okay season's in let's go training camps over
- 1:19:00Speaker 12: then all of a sudden oh training camp starts for
- 1:19:01Speaker 12: the hockey team it's whole like i'm not ready for
- 1:19:03Speaker 12: another training camp i'll be honest i'm not in shape Greg,
- 1:19:06Speaker 12: not in shape for training camp.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: We'll be honest.
- 1:19:08Speaker 12: Not in shape, but yeah, we're underway.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: I say that about sideline reporting where I'm like, standing
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: is a shape you have to be in.
- 1:19:15Speaker 11: It is.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: It is. It is. What is training camp, Ian, at
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: the NHL? It's very different.
- 1:19:21Speaker 12: It's very different.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, what do they do?
- 1:19:23Speaker 12: Well, there's about 50 guys here, roughly. Well, a little
- 1:19:28Speaker 12: less than that because that's the roster, but there's There's
- 1:19:31Speaker 12: about 45 guys here. They split them into two groups.
- 1:19:33Speaker 12: They go morning sessions, afternoon sessions, and if you're not
- 1:19:36Speaker 12: on the ice and you're in the gym and you're
- 1:19:38Speaker 12: doing meetings and you're doing film and all that stuff,
- 1:19:40Speaker 12: so there's some similarities to, say, the NFL, but it's short.
- 1:19:43Speaker 12: These guys mostly, they're expected to come in in shape
- 1:19:48Speaker 12: and ready to go and ready to fly, and they've
- 1:19:50Speaker 12: been skating and they've been on ice for the last
- 1:19:52Speaker 12: couple months probably wherever their home is. A lot of
- 1:19:53Speaker 12: them stayed here. It's an interesting dynamic where You know,
- 1:19:57Speaker 12: everyone wants to trash the city and the organization and
- 1:20:00Speaker 12: all things Kraken in terms of national media and, you know,
- 1:20:03Speaker 12: all that stuff that was talked about in the summer.
- 1:20:04Speaker 12: And yet they had more people here, more players here
- 1:20:08Speaker 12: in the summer, this summer, working out here at the
- 1:20:11Speaker 12: Kraken Community Iceplex, especially in the last month or so
- 1:20:14Speaker 12: than ever. So these guys have been getting their work in.
- 1:20:16Speaker 12: Now it's, you know, now the coaching staff's implementing stuff
- 1:20:20Speaker 12: and systems and, you know, power play systems, penalty kill systems,
- 1:20:23Speaker 12: offensive zone stuff, all the things that they do. and
- 1:20:28Speaker 12: all the young guys are here. The guys will end
- 1:20:29Speaker 12: up in the American Hockey League, and then there's a
- 1:20:31Speaker 12: handful of guys that will end up going back to
- 1:20:33Speaker 12: junior hockey in the Western League or Ontario or what
- 1:20:35Speaker 12: have you, and they play a preseason game on Saturday.
- 1:20:39Speaker 12: Preseason game one is Saturday. Preseason game two is Sunday.
- 1:20:43Speaker 12: They'll split those teams up, and away you go. They
- 1:20:46Speaker 12: have a pretty good idea who's going to be on
- 1:20:47Speaker 12: the team and who's going to be here in Seattle,
- 1:20:49Speaker 12: but you never know. Maybe someone like a Berkeley Cat
- 1:20:51Speaker 12: and did last year can surprise like a Jake O'Brien
- 1:20:53Speaker 12: this year, but Um, yeah, it's just, it's, it's a grind,
- 1:20:56Speaker 12: but it's not too bad of a grind. And all
- 1:20:58Speaker 12: the other thing is the preseason is cut down, you know,
- 1:21:00Speaker 12: from six to four games.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: So there's only two days of practice at training camp
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: and then the game start and then there's just practice.
- 1:21:07Speaker 12: And then, yeah, well, they'll play this weekend, have a
- 1:21:09Speaker 12: couple of days of practice, play next Wednesday for a
- 1:21:11Speaker 12: preseason game, then one more preseason game. And then season
- 1:21:13Speaker 12: starts two weeks from today.
- 1:21:15Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: So I think it's two weeks from today. Is that right?
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Is it two weeks from today?
- 1:21:18Speaker 12: Is that October 4th?
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: October something.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So are they like, yeah. Are they on
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: two sheets of ice?
- 1:21:26Speaker 12: Well, there's three sheets here, and the main one next
- 1:21:30Speaker 12: to their lot, I'm looking at right now with all
- 1:21:32Speaker 12: the stands, the second group is on the middle ice
- 1:21:35Speaker 12: sheet right now, and they'll come over to this one
- 1:21:38Speaker 12: here in a second. So it just depends on what
- 1:21:40Speaker 12: they're working on. They'll come wandering all across and in between.
- 1:21:44Speaker 12: And then the goalies will get some extra work in
- 1:21:47Speaker 12: some of the sheets too. So, yeah, they utilize the
- 1:21:49Speaker 12: whole facility.
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: Who's the number one goalie going into camp in this season?
- 1:21:53Speaker 12: I think it's still Joey, but... I mean, Grubauer had.
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: A hell of a bounce-back season last year. He did.
- 1:21:59Speaker 12: You can make an argument he was their MVP last year,
- 1:22:01Speaker 12: to be honest with you. He was great last season,
- 1:22:03Speaker 12: which is good to see, and good to see him
- 1:22:05Speaker 12: bounce back. I'd say, which in hockey you kind of
- 1:22:09Speaker 12: want to have in a sense, they've got a 1-1-A,
- 1:22:11Speaker 12: and I'm not sure what the pecking order is. I
- 1:22:13Speaker 12: would say right now it's Joey 1, Phil 2, but
- 1:22:16Speaker 12: that could change. That could change.
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: What do you got from there today on the show?
- 1:22:21Speaker 12: One of the new captains, Vince Dunn, is going to
- 1:22:23Speaker 12: join us at 1 o'clock, which I'm excited. Vince, if
- 1:22:26Speaker 12: people never heard, Vince never holds back. So we'll hear
- 1:22:29Speaker 12: from him. I'm excited to talk to him coming up
- 1:22:32Speaker 12: at 1 o'clock. Ross Tucker joining us coming up today
- 1:22:35Speaker 12: at 1220. And then Greg, it's the unofficial start of
- 1:22:39Speaker 12: the weekend at 2 o'clock with Brandon Funston. Sorry, Jess,
- 1:22:42Speaker 12: you won't be here.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: I miss him.
- 1:22:44Speaker 12: I know, unofficial start of the weekend at 2 o'clock,
- 1:22:46Speaker 12: so if you have a fantasy football question, it's one
- 1:22:49Speaker 12: of our most popular segments of the week. You guys
- 1:22:52Speaker 12: know the rules by now. You can text in 49451,
- 1:22:55Speaker 12: but you cannot text in before high noon, 12 o'clock.
- 1:22:58Speaker 12: Anything after that, you get your questions answered as many
- 1:23:00Speaker 12: as we can. Phone calls as well at 2 o'clock
- 1:23:02Speaker 12: with Funston for week two of fantasy football.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: Yet every week you have someone early, premature, don't you?
- 1:23:08Speaker 12: We had three last week that were at 11, 59, 59,
- 1:23:10Speaker 12: or 58.
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:23:11Speaker 12: They tried, dude. They tried. And we did not answer
- 1:23:17Speaker 12: the questions.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Of course not.
- 1:23:19Speaker 12: You have standards.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: You have to draw a line.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: It's the Shockey rule.
- 1:23:22Speaker 12: Yeah, it's the Kevin Shockey rule. Once you break that, then,
- 1:23:25Speaker 12: you know, it's anarchy.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: It's anarchy. There are no rules. Dogs and cats together.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Dogs and cats together. Yeah, exactly. Thank you, Bill Murray. Yes.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: Thanks for the reference. All right, that's Ian. You're going
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: to be from Krakenland from training camp coming up 12
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: to 3 next. I'll be going to Seahawks and talk
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: to Drew Locke here in a minute, and you'll hear
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: from him tomorrow on our show. And a Washington State
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: beef permission football Friday tomorrow. Archbishop Murphy at Anacortes, our
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: high school game of the week. We'll do that tomorrow
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: and talk to the Archbishop Murphy coach. All that's coming
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: up tomorrow. Thanks for listening. We'll do it again tomorrow
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: live on 93.3 KJR FM.
