- 0:24Well, hello there, everyone.
- 0:25It is John C.
- 0:26Morley here, serial entrepreneur.
- 0:28It is so great to be with you
- 0:30guys.
- 0:32And yes, interesting day here.
- 0:36And so I want to let you guys
- 0:39know that we have another great show for
- 0:41you right here.
- 0:42I'm actually live on campus today at Montclair
- 0:44State University.
- 0:45The sun is actually beckoning all around me.
- 0:48And I'm actually at the beautiful backdrop live
- 0:50here at Cole Hall.
- 0:53Of those who don't know, that are not
- 0:56a student here or have not been on
- 0:57campus, Cole Hall, Susan B.
- 1:00Cole was very instrumental here, involved one of
- 1:05the past presidents.
- 1:06And so Cole Hall is where all the
- 1:08administration stuff is done.
- 1:11It's where you go if you have questions
- 1:13about registration.
- 1:14They call it Redhawk Central because obviously students
- 1:16are Redhawks.
- 1:18All right, guys, it is so great to
- 1:20be with all of you here today.
- 1:22If this is your very first time joining
- 1:24me on the Inspirations for Your Life show,
- 1:26well, I want to take the opportunity to
- 1:28say basically welcome.
- 1:31If you've been here many times before, I
- 1:32want to take the opportunity to say thank
- 1:34you for coming back.
- 1:35It's always great to have people that enjoy
- 1:37the quality of my content and want to
- 1:38keep watching and listening to the show.
- 1:41If you're thirsty, if you're hungry or anything
- 1:43like that, feel free to go grab that
- 1:45snack or beverage and head on back so
- 1:47we can start the show.
- 1:49Guys, incidentally, if you didn't know, well, just
- 1:53last week, yep, just last week, which was
- 1:57April 17th, I officially became an author of
- 2:01Drain to Driven.
- 2:02And that's not going to be my last
- 2:03book, guys.
- 2:04There are going to be many more.
- 2:06There's a tech book coming out, I believe,
- 2:08in January or February next year.
- 2:09But this is my first book, and the
- 2:11book tour officially starts next month.
- 2:14You can learn more about that and all
- 2:15my other great resources by visiting BelieveMeAchieve.com.
- 2:19All right, guys, let's go ahead and kick
- 2:22this show off.
- 2:23Are you ready?
- 2:23I know I am.
- 2:24All right, everyone, so this is Inspirations for
- 2:27Your Life.
- 2:28Why small actions change everything.
- 2:30This is season five, and right now we
- 2:35are on our our show series five, which
- 2:40means basically we are in our we're in
- 2:44our fifth year.
- 2:45We have not completed our fifth year, but
- 2:47we are in our fifth year.
- 2:49And so that means we've been on the
- 2:50air over basically four years in a row.
- 2:55This is, ladies and gentlemen, this is show
- 2:5817.
- 3:01Yeah, this is show 17.
- 3:04And again, just a lot to share with
- 3:06you guys.
- 3:09And so how people actually take control of
- 3:13their direction.
- 3:14That's the master for the week.
- 3:17I'm John C.
- 3:17Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 3:21podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student, passionate
- 3:25lifelong learner, and now proud to be a
- 3:28published author.
- 3:30You know, I think a lot of people,
- 3:32when we think about these things, people get
- 3:35stuck in what's going on for them.
- 3:39And by being stuck, I mean like they
- 3:41just don't know what to do.
- 3:43They get confused.
- 3:45And that can be a that could be
- 3:47a very that could be a very big
- 3:50problem for for so many different people.
- 3:53You know, they want to do something.
- 3:55But then by the time they start to
- 3:57do something, it's like, I don't know, they
- 3:59get like sidetracked.
- 4:01And then every time they try to do
- 4:03something, it's like they can't because they're actually
- 4:06stuck somewhere.
- 4:09And again, I think those are I think
- 4:10those are important things to to acknowledge.
- 4:13It's not a time to say, hey, you
- 4:15know, we need to stop.
- 4:18You know, I think it's just important to
- 4:22realize that awareness becomes really key, guys.
- 4:26It becomes really key.
- 4:28So our granular topic is what actually changes
- 4:34thinking?
- 4:36What actually changes thinking?
- 4:40And that's important, guys.
- 4:46It's a very, very important topic.
- 4:49And I say this to you because.
- 4:52These are things that we live by every
- 4:54day, whether it's consciously or whether it's unconsciously,
- 4:59but these things shape who we are in
- 5:02life.
- 5:02And I think that's a I think that's
- 5:04a point that most people just they don't
- 5:06realize, they don't understand how much their subconscious
- 5:09changes things.
- 5:14So let's think about this for just a
- 5:16moment.
- 5:16Let's think about where you are in life.
- 5:18Let's think about maybe where you want to
- 5:20go.
- 5:22And you might say to me, John, you
- 5:24know, I want to go here, I want
- 5:25to go there, but I'm being blocked.
- 5:28And it's not the blocking of, let's say.
- 5:34You, it's the blocking, maybe of your environment,
- 5:38and I think that's a very I think
- 5:40that's a very important thing to to to
- 5:43realize.
- 5:44It's not something to get scared of.
- 5:46It's something to basically acknowledge, OK?
- 5:51It's something to acknowledge.
- 5:53And again, that's something that I believe is
- 5:57important for every one of us, every one
- 6:02of us.
- 6:03Yeah, every single one of us has this
- 6:07ability, has this concept.
- 6:11And I think sometimes, you know, we get
- 6:16stuck in the process, the process of wanting
- 6:22to do better.
- 6:23But then every time we try, we don't
- 6:26have enough resources to finish what we can.
- 6:29So I want to tell you to not
- 6:31get discouraged by that, because that discourages so
- 6:35many people.
- 6:36It's about how we react and how we
- 6:40choose to apply these things.
- 6:42I think that's probably one of the most
- 6:44important things that I can share with you
- 6:45here on the Inspiration for Your Life show
- 6:47is that and right now we've got the
- 6:50bell.
- 6:50So the bell rings basically every hour.
- 6:53Again, we're on a live campus.
- 6:55We have noise.
- 6:55We have students.
- 6:56We have all kinds of stuff happening.
- 6:57We have bells.
- 6:59We could have people interrupting us.
- 7:01There's so many different things to think about.
- 7:06And so becoming aware of just where you
- 7:09are, where your mind's at, I think is
- 7:12something that so many people, for whatever reason,
- 7:15they just don't understand.
- 7:19And that's a that's a really you know,
- 7:22that's a really, really big problem for for
- 7:24so many people.
- 7:26And again, I tell you this not to
- 7:28scare you.
- 7:29I tell you this so that you can
- 7:30build that kind of momentum so that you
- 7:32can go after what you want.
- 7:35You know, I know there's a lot of
- 7:37people out there that are going to cause
- 7:39you to get frustrated.
- 7:40I know this.
- 7:41Believe me, guys, I absolutely, absolutely know this.
- 7:45And maybe you're saying, John, you know, things
- 7:48are not going the way I want.
- 7:50They're not happening all tonight.
- 7:54OK, and maybe that's something that you're working
- 7:57on, you know, right this very moment, maybe
- 7:59or maybe you're stuck because you've tried so
- 8:04many times and you can't seem to get
- 8:07the needle to move.
- 8:08And I've used this expression before a lot
- 8:10of times many years ago, we would measure
- 8:13things with a needle.
- 8:14And when I say the needle, the needle
- 8:16of like a meter or something, it wasn't
- 8:18digital back then.
- 8:20And I think that's a I think that's
- 8:21an important thing for most people to understand
- 8:24is that it was not digital back then.
- 8:26And because it wasn't digital back then, we'd
- 8:29be able to see if the needle was
- 8:30moving or if the needle wasn't moving.
- 8:32So I think that's a I think that's
- 8:33a very I think that's an important concept,
- 8:36OK, you know, to understand.
- 8:41And I know a lot of you're saying,
- 8:43John, you know, I can't tell if the
- 8:45needle's moving.
- 8:47Well.
- 8:48I think some of it is your gut,
- 8:50right, some of it is your gut, but
- 8:52then there's other parts of it that just
- 8:55sort of get in the way.
- 8:56And I don't say they get in way
- 8:58on purpose.
- 8:59They get in the way because of, oh,
- 9:02they get in the way because of you.
- 9:05Yeah, that's that's the truth.
- 9:07They get in the way because of you
- 9:09and because of, ladies, gentlemen, because of your
- 9:12environment and your environment, you know, will predicate
- 9:17to what you become.
- 9:20If you're not becoming what you want to
- 9:22be, guys, it's time to change that environment.
- 9:26It's it's not about, you know, it's not
- 9:29about doing something for just one thing.
- 9:34It's about doing something for a true purpose,
- 9:38a true purpose in life, a purpose that
- 9:41will set you further than you ever believed
- 9:45was possible.
- 9:47Now, this all happens, guys, from something we
- 9:50call your core values.
- 9:54Your core values.
- 9:56So your core values are how your mind
- 10:00and how your body is basically wired.
- 10:04And if you don't understand what those core
- 10:06values are, well, then you're going to be
- 10:08like, I'm going to say you're going to
- 10:10be up a creek because that dictates that
- 10:13predicates things like what actually changes.
- 10:17OK, and so people actually take control of
- 10:20their life, but then they wonder why it's
- 10:23not going the right way.
- 10:25Maybe they're not being open to things.
- 10:27So today I'm going deeper than just motivation.
- 10:31I'm talking about thinking because the most people
- 10:35believe in what they do in their life
- 10:38can actually change how they decide, how they
- 10:42react and how they show up and how
- 10:45they achieve their goals or not.
- 10:48It doesn't change instantly, guys.
- 10:50I got to tell you that right off
- 10:51the bat.
- 10:53But it takes effort.
- 10:54OK, it it changes through exposure, through repetition,
- 10:59through experience.
- 11:00And through what you allow into your mind
- 11:05every single day, thinking follows exposure.
- 11:09What you see consistently becomes what you believe.
- 11:14Ideas don't stick, guys, because you hear them
- 11:17once.
- 11:18They stick because you encounter them repeatedly.
- 11:21You make them part of your life.
- 11:22That repetition is what begins to reshape your
- 11:25beliefs.
- 11:26And by your beliefs, I'm talking about your
- 11:28true inner core values, because new input reshapes
- 11:32thinking slowly, not dramatically.
- 11:34Quietly, you begin to see things differently.
- 11:37And that shift in perspective changes everything.
- 11:41Perspective doesn't come from force.
- 11:43It comes from a contrast, from seeing something
- 11:47different than what you're used to.
- 11:50And when that happens, you begin to question
- 11:54what you once accepted because experience always overrides
- 11:59theory.
- 12:00You don't believe what sounds right.
- 12:02You believe what you see and live repeatedly.
- 12:06You believe what you see often, not what
- 12:08you hear occasionally.
- 12:10Repetition rewires thinking.
- 12:15Patterns become mental defaults.
- 12:18Understanding builds over time, not in one moment.
- 12:22And awareness creates change.
- 12:24That could be people around us.
- 12:25That could be people talking, people walking.
- 12:28And change happens because of the environment we're
- 12:32in and because of the thoughts we're currently
- 12:34holding.
- 12:35Remember, I told you we're on a live
- 12:36campus, so we could get people walking around.
- 12:38That's part of the jig here.
- 12:40Because the moment you notice something, you create
- 12:43the opportunity to think differently.
- 12:45Thinking adapts constantly, but only based on what
- 12:49it's exposed to.
- 12:50Beliefs don't change instantly.
- 12:54They update slowly through consistent input.
- 12:57New data shifts perspectives and context changes meaning.
- 13:03The same idea, guys, can feel completely different
- 13:08depending on how it's presented.
- 13:10Information creates options and the options create the
- 13:17decisions.
- 13:19And decisions shape our thinking and, of course,
- 13:21our belief in that to our core values.
- 13:24So thinking evolves with input.
- 13:26If nothing new enters your mind, nothing new
- 13:29develops in your thinking world.
- 13:32Static input creates stagnation.
- 13:35Dynamic input creates growth.
- 13:37Variety expands perspective.
- 13:40Narrow inputs limit it.
- 13:43Insights build gradually, not overnight, not like the
- 13:47snap of a finger.
- 13:48You don't suddenly understand everything just because you
- 13:51saw it once you heard something.
- 13:53You begin to see patterns and then you
- 13:56recognize those patterns and then you apply them
- 13:58to your life.
- 14:00And guess what, guys?
- 14:00They actually reveal the truth.
- 14:03Exposure reduces bias because the more you see,
- 14:06the more clearly you understand.
- 14:09And signals become beliefs, guys.
- 14:11Beliefs drive behavior and behavior reinforces thinking.
- 14:15This is where the cycle becomes powerful.
- 14:19What you think affects what you do.
- 14:22What you do reinforces what you think.
- 14:25And over time, that loop becomes, well, your
- 14:28identity.
- 14:29And thinking doesn't just influence, guys, your life.
- 14:32It builds it.
- 14:34But thinking only changes when inputs change.
- 14:37That's the key.
- 14:37Input controls our mindset.
- 14:40And inputs could be people, could be actions,
- 14:42could be things, could be the environment we're
- 14:44in.
- 14:44What you allow in determines what will develop
- 14:48or not in your life.
- 14:49And that means change doesn't start with effort.
- 14:53It starts with exposure.
- 14:55If you want to think differently, you need
- 14:57to see differently, hear differently, experience differently.
- 15:01And thus, you'll show up differently in the
- 15:03world.
- 15:05Because your mind is not fixed, it's shaped
- 15:08every day by everything that you choose to
- 15:12expose it to.
- 15:13Whether that's consciously or subconsciously, most people, guys,
- 15:17try to force new things.
- 15:19But they keep the same environment, the same
- 15:21conversations, the same content, the same patterns.
- 15:25And then they wonder why nothing changes.
- 15:30Einstein said, the definition of insanity is doing
- 15:33the same thing over and over again and
- 15:34expecting different results.
- 15:38But nothing changes because nothing new is being
- 15:42introduced.
- 15:43Change starts with exposure, not intensity, not pressure,
- 15:49exposure.
- 15:50You don't need to push harder.
- 15:52You need to see more, learn more, experience
- 15:55more.
- 15:55Because once your thinking begins to shift, everything
- 15:59begins to flow.
- 16:01Your decisions change, your actions change, your direction
- 16:05changes.
- 16:07And here's the truth, guys, if you want
- 16:09to know, most people don't understand that thinking
- 16:12is about the moment.
- 16:15But it does change permanently when you shift
- 16:19the moment.
- 16:20Because once you see something clearly, you can't
- 16:23unsee it.
- 16:23Once you understand something deeply, you don't go
- 16:26back to thinking the same way.
- 16:28So today, don't try to force new thinking.
- 16:31Just change what you're exposing yourself to.
- 16:35Ask yourself, what am I seeing every day?
- 16:37What am I repeating mentally?
- 16:39What input is shaping my mindset?
- 16:41Because those answers are shaping your future.
- 16:46If you want, ladies and gentlemen, different results,
- 16:50you need different input.
- 16:52You need different stimulus.
- 16:54You need different environments, different people, different conditions.
- 16:59If you want a different direction, you need
- 17:03different exposure.
- 17:04Because thinking doesn't change by accident or by
- 17:09the flip of a coin.
- 17:11It changes by design.
- 17:14And a lot of people that are not
- 17:17getting what they want don't realize that our
- 17:20life is by design.
- 17:22And once you understand that you stop trying
- 17:25to control everything around you, and you start
- 17:29controlling what shapes you, that's when you start
- 17:32to enjoy life.
- 17:34And I think a lot of people today,
- 17:36when we think about insights, and I'm just,
- 17:38you know, sitting here in this little park
- 17:41here at school.
- 17:43I think a lot of people walking by
- 17:45today, if I just kind of look at
- 17:46them, you know, as I'm sitting here on
- 17:48this little round concrete bench.
- 17:52People walk, but I will tell you something.
- 17:55You can tell when somebody's walking intentionally.
- 18:00You can tell when somebody is really enjoying
- 18:04where they are.
- 18:06And I can tell you, I, out of
- 18:09just glancing here at a few people around
- 18:11campus, I don't really see anybody on campus
- 18:15that's really enjoying the moment.
- 18:20I see people in a hustle to get
- 18:21to class.
- 18:23I see people playing around with their iPhones
- 18:26or their Androids.
- 18:28I see some people just basically rushing to
- 18:34get somewhere.
- 18:36Looking around again, you know, some people are
- 18:40walking slowly.
- 18:41Some people are walking very quickly.
- 18:45Some people are walking and noticing nature.
- 18:52So that's close to enjoying the moment, right?
- 18:55But I can tell they're not enjoying the
- 18:56moment because they're going so quickly.
- 19:00You know, and it's the haphazardness of, you
- 19:04know, just moving around.
- 19:05And it's just, it's really an eye opener
- 19:07to just sit here and watch people as
- 19:09they walk by.
- 19:11Because again, you can see different expressions, different
- 19:14emotions.
- 19:15You can see where people's heads are.
- 19:17You can see how they carry their book
- 19:19bag or their laptop.
- 19:21You can tell if someone's walking with intention.
- 19:25You can tell if somebody in this environment
- 19:27is showing up for the reasons that will
- 19:30make them successful.
- 19:34But again, just kind of watching, I see
- 19:37a lot of people just thumbing through their
- 19:38cell phones, thinking that that's all they need
- 19:42to do.
- 19:44But just looking around here, the trees, I
- 19:48don't think I can give you one person
- 19:50that's been intentional.
- 19:51OK, I can give you one.
- 19:52There was a camera crew here before doing
- 19:54some work for their final, about maybe 20
- 19:57minutes before I started the show.
- 19:58And I saw them moving their reflectors outside,
- 20:01you know, for the shooting of getting the
- 20:02sun's light to help their videography.
- 20:06And in addition to that, I could tell
- 20:10there was a cohesive group.
- 20:11Now, they were all working on this for
- 20:12a grade, but I could tell that group
- 20:14was showing up intentionally.
- 20:17Maybe because they had to, but I could
- 20:19tell that they wanted to show up.
- 20:23All right, they wanted to show up.
- 20:26You know, I also see looking around campus,
- 20:30I see, you know, some people looking at
- 20:33the foliage around.
- 20:35I see another person here basically rolling a
- 20:39cart which has some gear on it.
- 20:41Looks like he's probably a film student because
- 20:43I can see all the all the gear
- 20:45that's on the cart.
- 20:47And, you know, just looking here and just
- 20:49noticing for just a few moments how.
- 20:55Everyone is just showing up.
- 20:58But they're not doing intentionally.
- 21:02They're just kind of walking, they're just kind
- 21:05of being part of life.
- 21:07And so whether we're talking about life, we're
- 21:09talking about a game, you got to show
- 21:12up and play with your entire heart.
- 21:15Right.
- 21:16If you ever known a baseball player or
- 21:18a basketball player, a football player to just
- 21:20show up and go through the motions and
- 21:22not get into the game and not be
- 21:24psyched about winning.
- 21:28Here's somebody that just was rolling by literally
- 21:30on the field.
- 21:30On a skateboard.
- 21:33And.
- 21:35I have to say, out of all the
- 21:37people I've seen today and there's been, let's
- 21:40say right now, campus is slow, maybe there's
- 21:42probably I've maybe observed maybe 60 or 70
- 21:44people, the person on the skateboard.
- 21:47Is putting intention into what they're doing, they're
- 21:51being mindful of.
- 21:53How they're steering, you know, their.
- 21:56Their their their their mini.
- 21:59Sports board.
- 22:02But so many people just walking around.
- 22:06Kind of having this very lackadaisical and very
- 22:13apathetic thing, another group is coming here, walking
- 22:18with some coffees.
- 22:20And so sitting down and taking the time
- 22:24to enjoy that coffee or that latte or
- 22:27whatever is enjoying the moment.
- 22:29But I can tell you have looking at
- 22:32all the people here, there's maybe 30, 40
- 22:34people at time.
- 22:35I can't pick out too many intentional people.
- 22:39The person with the the camera gear was
- 22:42intentional, the kid with the skateboard was intentional.
- 22:46So that means, guys, it's a very low
- 22:49percentage of people in this world that actually
- 22:52are intentional with their life.
- 22:53You know what that means?
- 22:54That means they're not going to get what
- 22:56they want.
- 22:56They're going to be disappointed their whole life
- 22:58because they're not intentional.
- 23:02You might say, John, what do we do
- 23:03intentionally on campus?
- 23:05Everything you do should be intentional.
- 23:07The way you think, the way you walk,
- 23:09the way you talk.
- 23:13Intentionality is not something you just do for
- 23:16the moment, it's something you do for life.
- 23:20It's kind of like a daily mental diet.
- 23:24Ask yourself this question, when's the last time
- 23:27you've been intentional?
- 23:29And I'm trying to notice around campus here
- 23:32if anybody else is intentional.
- 23:34And I noticed that we're getting to the
- 23:36end of one of the class time, so
- 23:38it's a little quiet right now.
- 23:41Again, you'll see some people look up, make
- 23:43sure they're not going to bump into something,
- 23:44but not really intentional.
- 23:49I saw a group of people just a
- 23:51few minutes ago, we have an amphitheater walking
- 23:54up to the top and exploring it, probably
- 23:59enjoying the outdoors.
- 24:02So that's maybe four people I've seen in
- 24:06just under 25 minutes that have been intentional.
- 24:17Intentional means that you are lining up your
- 24:21actions and your thoughts with your core values.
- 24:26We've got another skater board back here, another
- 24:28skateboard guy.
- 24:30So now we're up to five people that
- 24:31are intentional.
- 24:32And I'm watching him and he's kind of
- 24:34just controlling the skateboard and he's kind of
- 24:35like, you know, he's getting into the feel
- 24:39of kind of it.
- 24:39And he's really, you know, basically becoming part
- 24:44of that skateboard, going back and forth, you
- 24:47know, taking one foot, pushing from the back
- 24:50and getting on and really having to focus
- 24:53because you've got to do something to be
- 24:55able to drive a skateboard, even ride a
- 24:59bike.
- 25:00So do this sometime, go somewhere where it's
- 25:04outside and notice how many people are being
- 25:08intentional in their environment.
- 25:10And you're going to see, guys, it's not
- 25:12very many.
- 25:15It's not just looking around.
- 25:23Enjoying the foliage, enjoying the wind, noticing how.
- 25:30Right now, there's another intentional group I see
- 25:33getting up, which is that film crew I
- 25:34told you about working on this project for
- 25:36probably their end of semester grade.
- 25:40And they're becoming intentional because they've got to
- 25:42focus on their project, so they want to
- 25:45shoot the best video that they can.
- 25:49So are they being intentional because they want
- 25:51to be intentional?
- 25:52Well, to be intentional because they have to
- 25:56if they want to get a good grade,
- 25:57but if they were doing this for fun,
- 25:59would they be intentional?
- 26:00I'd have to say yes.
- 26:02Most film people, you know, I do a
- 26:03lot of film when I shoot.
- 26:05I'm intentional.
- 26:07Everything I do is intentional.
- 26:10Showing up, coming on camera for you, that's
- 26:16intentionality.

- 26:30And if you're saying to me, John, I
- 26:31don't know how to change my input, it's
- 26:35a fair question.
- 26:39Show up, be in the moment, focus on
- 26:45being present.
- 26:47Things you see or see, hear, touch, taste,
- 26:50smell and experience how your world around you
- 26:57is putting you in a certain state.
- 27:00Is it calmness?
- 27:03Is it stress?
- 27:05Is it curiosity?
- 27:08What is it?
- 27:10The more that we learn how to embrace
- 27:14our environment, to read our environment, to show
- 27:16up in our environment, the more that we
