- 0:00This is Scott Becker with the Becker Business
- 0:02and the Becker Private Equity podcast. This will
- 0:05also be a special combined episode with Becker's
- 0:08HealthCare.
- 0:08This episode today, we're gonna feature a brilliant
- 0:12woman leader, Susan Barrett, who's a general counsel
- 0:15and chief compliance officer of a company called
- 0:17Montanito.
- 0:19And Montanito is in the eating disorder
- 0:21area.
- 0:22She's a brilliant leader. We'll talk a little
- 0:24bit about her career, about what Montanito does,
- 0:27where they're most focused, the trends we're watching,
- 0:29and a lot more.
- 0:31Susan, can you take a moment to introduce
- 0:33yourself and tell us a little bit about
- 0:35Montanito?
- 0:37Yeah. Absolutely. So, yeah, I'm Susan Barrett. I
- 0:40am the general counsel and the chief compliance
- 0:43officer at Montanito.
- 0:45We are a leading provider of eating disorder
- 0:49treatment. So we have services
- 0:51through approximately
- 0:5350 brick and mortar locations
- 0:55as well as virtually across The US. So
- 0:58we're doing every level of care here. It's
- 1:00inpatient,
- 1:01residential,
- 1:02partial hospitalization,
- 1:04intensive outpatient,
- 1:06and more recently outpatient levels of care as
- 1:09well. So
- 1:10it's a comprehensive
- 1:12staff.
- 1:13We have psychiatrists,
- 1:15other allied health care
- 1:16providers like nurse practitioners,
- 1:19therapists,
- 1:20registered dietitians,
- 1:22nurses, recovery coaches,
- 1:24you know, all of them play a part
- 1:26in the recovery journey. So I've been with
- 1:28the company for a little over three years
- 1:31now.
- 1:33It's an excellent place to work,
- 1:36smart, passionate colleagues.
- 1:38And just from a personal standpoint,
- 1:41it's pretty rewarding just given the number of,
- 1:43clients that we've helped recover from eating disorders,
- 1:46which is a
- 1:47pretty deadly,
- 1:48mental health disease.
- 1:51So so fascinating sort of growth story for
- 1:54for the for the company, for Montanito
- 1:56in an area where there's so much prevalence
- 1:58and so much challenge and so important.
- 2:01Talk about as you head into 2026,
- 2:03what are you most focused on and excited
- 2:05about at Montanito?
- 2:07Yeah. I'm excited about the, you know, the
- 2:09continued
- 2:10opportunity
- 2:11to increase the access to care both, you
- 2:14know, brick and mortar and virtually to reach
- 2:16more,
- 2:18patients that are in need of the services.
- 2:20So, you know, last year, we had Andy
- 2:23Blankenmeier. He was appointed our CEO.
- 2:26He's really passionate about the work that we
- 2:28do.
- 2:30Really,
- 2:31two new board members. They've
- 2:34really deep expertise in health care and behavioral
- 2:37health.
- 2:38We had our,
- 2:40you know,
- 2:41twenty twenty five outcomes report, which
- 2:44all of that showed, you know, really strong
- 2:46symptom reduction and client satisfaction.
- 2:49So I expect all of this to continue.
- 2:52It's it's a good time to be a
- 2:54part of the behavioral health space, in my
- 2:56opinion, because there's so many people to reach
- 2:59here. And I think it's exciting,
- 3:01you know, for the company to continue to
- 3:03grow, and and,
- 3:05everyone that I work with is super passionate
- 3:07about what we're doing. And so it's I
- 3:10think we can continue the good services, the
- 3:13good outcomes,
- 3:14and just continue to reach more people virtually
- 3:17in in person.
- 3:19I'd I'd want to talk to you for
- 3:20a moment about leadership because Andy Blankenmeier is
- 3:24a fantastic leader.
- 3:25You yourself are having a fantastic leadership career.
- 3:29I I saw recently you were named as
- 3:30a top counsel,
- 3:32in in a certain
- 3:34group, and and congratulations.
- 3:36Talk a little bit about when you think
- 3:37about leadership, about
- 3:39what resonates with you, what types of skill
- 3:42sets, and what advice might you give to
- 3:44emerging leaders?
- 3:45I I I remember Andy from I think
- 3:47when he was in Ohio before he was
- 3:49with
- 3:50this company
- 3:51and a and a tremendous leader. But but
- 3:54talk about, like, your own leadership thoughts,
- 3:56what you see in Andy, what you see
- 3:58in people generally
- 3:59that you would maybe give advice to on
- 4:02emerging leaders.
- 4:03Yeah. I mean, I think from my perspective,
- 4:06you know, the number one thing is to,
- 4:08you know, work hard and do good work.
- 4:10That's obviously step one. But you have to
- 4:13build
- 4:14relationships and trust with the people that you
- 4:16work with. I mean, particularly
- 4:18in my space, you know, being the chief
- 4:22compliance officer and the general counsel,
- 4:25I want people to feel that they can
- 4:27reach out to me at any time with
- 4:29any question or concern because,
- 4:32you know, I wanna be proactive in in
- 4:34addressing issues. I want people to feel comfortable,
- 4:37and I want them to feel, you know,
- 4:39I'm internalizing
- 4:40their problems and making it my problem and
- 4:42being innovative with them to find a solution.
- 4:46So I think it's either you wanna be
- 4:48responsive. You gotta understand the full picture from
- 4:50people.
- 4:52Don't be afraid to pick up the phone
- 4:54and just find ways to assist. And and
- 4:57people want
- 4:59to have a culture of compliance.
- 5:01Right? They wanna do the right things, and
- 5:03so whatever I can do
- 5:06to assist them.
- 5:08There's no
- 5:09you know, I I am the only,
- 5:12attorney at the company right now, and
- 5:15anyone can reach out to me at any
- 5:17time. You know, it doesn't matter what I'm
- 5:19doing. It's it's all important to me. So
- 5:22I think build that trust with your colleagues
- 5:24because
- 5:25when it comes to a situation
- 5:27where,
- 5:28you know, they are are stuck, you want
- 5:31them to look for look to you as
- 5:33a resource. You can protect the company from
- 5:35risk and liability in those situations.
- 5:37So,
- 5:39it's it's a it's a unique position to
- 5:42be in, but it's a really important role
- 5:44for company to have, you know, a leader,
- 5:47a general counsel, and and or a chief
- 5:50compliance officer that has those relationships with staff
- 5:53members.
- 5:55No. It's it's truly remarkable. And in the
- 5:57eating disorder space,
- 5:59what trends are you watching currently? What what
- 6:02sort of is top of mind in the
- 6:03eating disorders area?
- 6:06Yeah. I mean, I think
- 6:08for for me on the legal side, like,
- 6:10I do a daily review
- 6:12of, you know, the current administration and any
- 6:15impact
- 6:16on the health care sector, whether that's
- 6:18court decisions,
- 6:20like, for instance, you know, ninth circuit just
- 6:22issued the appellate ruling on ECRA. You know?
- 6:25We have the executive orders,
- 6:28how that impacts us, any actions by administrative
- 6:31bodies. You know? I I handle all our
- 6:33employment work, you know, EEOC
- 6:36decisions,
- 6:37any HIPAA related with HHS.
- 6:41So I'm I'm constantly,
- 6:44you know, reviewing and seeing how that's evolving
- 6:47and impacting us. And then if it does,
- 6:50you know, it's it's
- 6:52determining next steps, whether that's training with employees,
- 6:55updating our policies, and and trying to be
- 6:58proactive versus reactive with the current administration and
- 7:01and their impact on health care. I think
- 7:03the other trend for us and, really, I
- 7:06think it's just anyone in health care right
- 7:08now who's in legal.
- 7:10You know, you kinda have to be on
- 7:11top of the latest laws and and regulations
- 7:14related to the use of technology and AI.
- 7:17I mean, it's it's a hot topic right
- 7:19now and, you know, we want to increase
- 7:22efficiency in the patient care experience.
- 7:25So, you know, in order to do that,
- 7:27you know, we have to be able to
- 7:29manage risk and comply with HIPAA and and
- 7:31privacy laws. And, you know, that's definitely a
- 7:34newer topic in the past year or so,
- 7:38that we're you have to kinda be all
- 7:40over because it's it's important for the business.
- 7:43And and I can imagine that every family,
- 7:46every person that has a eating disorder
- 7:49is also looking at Chi ChiPT
- 7:52and online resources and so forth. And and
- 7:56are there challenges in sort of
- 7:58pushing through that and and being able to
- 8:02talk to patients, talk to families
- 8:04about
- 8:05both
- 8:06combining, converging the synergies and what they're seeing
- 8:08online versus what you folks are doing?
- 8:11Are those evolving issues?
- 8:14Those are evolving issues. I mean, the Internet
- 8:17in AI is is a great thing, right,
- 8:20in my opinion. It we can use it
- 8:23to to really enhance the
- 8:26the patient care experience, and I think there's
- 8:29a lot of value to it. There's also
- 8:31some dangers,
- 8:32you know, what you just mentioned on on
- 8:34misconceptions
- 8:35from what you read online. But I think,
- 8:38you know, our company does a really good
- 8:40job of
- 8:42being,
- 8:43transparent with families, having open lines of communication,
- 8:47having, you know, good relationships with out outside
- 8:51providers,
- 8:52so that, you know, they're getting firsthand
- 8:55information and medical opinions
- 8:58versus just what they're seeing online, which isn't
- 9:00always the most accurate.
- 9:03Thank you so much. Susan, it is a
- 9:05great pleasure to get a chance to visit
- 9:07with you today, a remarkable leader and professional.
- 9:11I wanna thank you for joining us on
- 9:13this combined episode of the Becker's Healthcare podcast
- 9:16and the Becker private equity and business podcast.
- 9:18Thank you so much for joining us today.
- 9:20Thanks so much for having me, Scott. I
- 9:22really appreciate it.
