- 1:54Speaker 2: the sports governor the big smooth one and I am
- 1:57Speaker 2: back with a great episode of sports done right tonight
- 2:00Speaker 2: thanks to our friends at 7th Avenue Pizza and we
- 2:04Speaker 2: have scored North's very own Ross Brendel joining us tonight
- 2:09Speaker 2: we just finished up with a great chat from him
- 2:11Speaker 2: Gophers Vikings we're gonna break it all down it's a
- 2:15Speaker 2: football show Golden Gophers, they beat Michigan for the first
- 2:20Speaker 2: time since 77 at home. And I'm not going to
- 2:24Speaker 2: get too much into it because me and Ross break
- 2:26Speaker 2: down these games here, but it was great. It was great.
- 2:30Speaker 2: I thought the Gophers should have won by more. Got
- 2:34Speaker 2: a little worried at a couple points in the game,
- 2:36Speaker 2: but that Gopher defense was real deal and shut down
- 2:40Speaker 2: Michigan when it counted. And Gophers... Get the win, storm
- 2:44Speaker 2: the field, all the good stuff. Congratulations. We'll see if
- 2:48Speaker 2: they can keep it up against Purdue. Minnesota, yeah, there's
- 2:51Speaker 2: still issues at quarterback, but we're 4-0, peeps. 4-0. So
- 2:57Speaker 2: kind of, yeah, we got to get better quarterback play,
- 3:00Speaker 2: but we're 4-0. Imagine if we had some quarterback play
- 3:03Speaker 2: where this season might be able to go. And one thing, too,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and we'll get into with the interview with Ross is
- 3:11Speaker 2: Vikings offense has a lot of issues going on right
- 3:14Speaker 2: now that we're really not thinking about as well. So, listen,
- 3:18Speaker 2: we're going to get into this interview with Ross because
- 3:21Speaker 2: it's 56 minutes long. So, let's just get right to it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: One and only, Sports Governor Vince Wright would score Norris
- 3:28Speaker 2: Ross Brindle right after this.

- 4:14Speaker 2: smooth one, all that fun stuff. And today we have
- 4:19Speaker 2: one of my favorite guys in the local sports scene
- 4:22Speaker 2: on the show. Very honored to have. Oh, stop it, Ross.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Stop it. Ross Brendel works with Score North, the big show,
- 4:30Speaker 2: Gophers 101. And I love that show. I love you, Thor,
- 4:35Speaker 2: who's been on a couple of times as well. Just
- 4:38Speaker 2: the interaction I like. you know, which you score guys
- 4:41Speaker 2: over there. So welcome to Sports Done Right, Ross. Thank
- 4:44Speaker 2: you for joining us.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Well, thank you so much for having me. And as
- 4:47Speaker 5: I joked with other people, I love sports and politics.
- 4:52Speaker 5: And I always say I love sports because there's a
- 4:54Speaker 5: lot of politics in sports.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:56Speaker 5: I love politics because there's a lot of sport to it.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Okay. Right.
- 5:00Speaker 4: So it's very fun.
- 5:01Speaker 5: Somebody who has always said I will never run for
- 5:03Speaker 5: public office unless I'm running for governor. It's nice to
- 5:07Speaker 5: join the sports governor because- I got sports gov takes
- 5:12Speaker 5: and I got political gov takes that I try to
- 5:16Speaker 5: leave aside.
- 5:17Speaker 4: So it's good to be here. Thank you.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Hey, man, I appreciate it. We're going to be talking
- 5:20Speaker 2: some football tonight with Big Ross, ladies and gentlemen. Ross,
- 5:24Speaker 2: before we get into the sports, why don't you just
- 5:26Speaker 2: tell the folks a little bit about yourself, where you
- 5:29Speaker 2: came from, how you got to where you are right
- 5:31Speaker 2: now with your love of sports and the show.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Yeah, sure.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I go all the way back. I'll make this as
- 5:36Speaker 5: quick as possible. I can be long-winded, so I apologize.
- 5:39Speaker 5: But I'm one of those people. I grew up in
- 5:42Speaker 5: a family where when my father was in the car,
- 5:45Speaker 5: he had some form of sports radio or sports on.
- 5:48Speaker 4: And that would have been early, mid to late 90s.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I just turned 40 years old.
- 5:54Speaker 4: So I'm just trying to date where that would be at.
- 5:57Speaker 5: So a lot of listening to Twins on the radio,
- 5:59Speaker 5: Vikings on the radio as you're moving around. out and about,
- 6:03Speaker 5: have always loved sports. I don't want to be too
- 6:06Speaker 5: much of a downer, but I lost my mother at
- 6:08Speaker 5: a young age. And I always jokingly told people, besides
- 6:12Speaker 5: my father being the world's greatest father, sports kind of
- 6:15Speaker 5: raised me. Because if I wasn't playing sports, I was
- 6:17Speaker 5: watching sports. And it's just always been a love of mine.
- 6:21Speaker 5: I've bobbed and weaved throughout media over the last 20 years. But,
- 6:26Speaker 5: you know, you mentioned Gophers 101. I don't know why
- 6:30Speaker 5: that is one of my biggest passions. And I didn't
- 6:32Speaker 5: even attend the university of Minnesota, but my joke has
- 6:35Speaker 5: always been my tax dollars go to it.
- 6:39Speaker 4: And Mark Coyle can check the receipts.
- 6:41Speaker 5: I have certainly given, and Joel Maturi, I've certainly given
- 6:45Speaker 5: that athletic program thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of
- 6:49Speaker 5: dollars of my own money at this point. So I
- 6:51Speaker 5: can definitely claim love to it.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:53Speaker 5: And just, you know, got into media right out of college,
- 6:56Speaker 5: did small town radio. I've been all around it's just
- 7:00Speaker 5: it's been a fun wild ride and there's many different
- 7:02Speaker 5: avenues to get to exactly what you and i are
- 7:05Speaker 5: doing right now so i encourage anybody who wants to
- 7:08Speaker 5: do it even if doing a podcast is just more
- 7:11Speaker 5: of something that you want to do for fun or
- 7:13Speaker 5: it's something you want to do to maybe make a
- 7:15Speaker 5: living out of it please do and if you have
- 7:17Speaker 5: any questions reach out to me i'd love to give
- 7:19Speaker 5: some advice.
- 7:20Speaker 2: And very cool of you to say that because you
- 7:24Speaker 2: know i People go, hey, Vince, what is it like
- 7:27Speaker 2: to do a podcast? Why did you do it? And
- 7:29Speaker 2: I was very reluctant, actually, at first. People really had
- 7:32Speaker 2: to kind of push me into this and, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 2: and stick with it and all that stuff. And for
- 7:38Speaker 2: folks like yourself that, you know, this is how you
- 7:40Speaker 2: make your living. You know, the one thing I like
- 7:43Speaker 2: about what you guys do at Score North, you talk
- 7:46Speaker 2: about all kinds of great topics with football, whether it's
- 7:49Speaker 2: Gophers or Vikings. And I just love the personalities that
- 7:52Speaker 2: you all have over there as well, Ross.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Well, we try, Phil, who's basically our ringleader, he likes
- 8:00Speaker 5: to say we want to be fun and informative.
- 8:03Speaker 2: That's a good way to put it, yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 5: And I generally think like that, it's intentional, but it's
- 8:09Speaker 5: really not. Like if you hire fun, knowledgeable people, generally
- 8:13Speaker 5: that's what you're going to get.
- 8:15Speaker 4: And I hope that that comes across.
- 8:17Speaker 5: And also I try and tell people sports should be
- 8:21Speaker 5: fun and we should have differing opinions.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:24Speaker 5: We we should we should verbal spar back and forth
- 8:28Speaker 5: about what a team should do, why things aren't working.
- 8:31Speaker 2: It's what makes it fun. Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 5: And how boring again, then you can apply this to
- 8:36Speaker 5: more than sports. How boring would everything be if we
- 8:40Speaker 5: were all the exact same? So, yeah, let's let's have fun.
- 8:44Speaker 5: Let's inform people to the best of our abilities. And
- 8:47Speaker 5: within that, you, if you're listening or watching me or
- 8:50Speaker 5: any podcast podcast, You're allowed to form your own beliefs
- 8:53Speaker 5: and opinions based off of what I say.
- 8:56Speaker 4: And guess what? That's fine. I'm good with that.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Let's just be respectful about it. And look, I can
- 9:04Speaker 5: be as guilty as anybody, Vince. I could have a
- 9:06Speaker 5: bad day and somebody can send me a below the
- 9:09Speaker 5: gutter comment and I can fire back. And immediately, not
- 9:13Speaker 5: raised as a Catholic, but immediately the Catholic guilt comes in.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Why did I do that? It doesn't really matter. We're
- 9:20Speaker 4: talking sports here. I love it.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I make a good chunk of my living off of it.
- 9:24Speaker 5: But at the end of the day, sports are supposed
- 9:27Speaker 5: to be a distraction. So let's have fun. Let's take
- 9:30Speaker 5: them seriously. But let's also keep in mind what we're
- 9:34Speaker 5: actually talking about.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Well, well said. Very well said. And with that, let's
- 9:39Speaker 2: get into it here. So Minnesota Golden Gophers. Coming off
- 9:43Speaker 2: of a very big win against Michigan. We're not going
- 9:46Speaker 2: to spend too much time on it, you know, being
- 9:48Speaker 2: that we're almost a week past the game and we
- 9:50Speaker 2: got to get into this Purdue preview here. But going
- 9:53Speaker 2: back to last week, you know, just give me your thoughts, Ross,
- 9:57Speaker 2: because I was at the game and. and, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 2: the first half of that game, Minnesota defense, you know,
- 10:05Speaker 2: I mean, I haven't seen them play like that in
- 10:07Speaker 2: a very, very long time. They did keep it up
- 10:10Speaker 2: for most of the game, but I was just impressed
- 10:13Speaker 2: by the defense and I was impressed that we got
- 10:16Speaker 2: a victory in spite of our quarterback not having his
- 10:19Speaker 2: best game, you know, throwing that pick six and another interception. And,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you know, to finally beat Michigan at home since 77,
- 10:29Speaker 2: you know, we've heard all the stats and all that stuff.
- 10:32Speaker 2: It really should have been a wider margin, but hey,
- 10:35Speaker 2: we'll take the win. But just give me kind of
- 10:37Speaker 2: your quick synopsis on what you saw last weekend over
- 10:40Speaker 2: at the bank.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Well, one, I'll get to right away and we'll save
- 10:44Speaker 5: it for when we get to Purdue. I loved what
- 10:46Speaker 5: you said about the quarterback, maybe not playing so great,
- 10:49Speaker 5: but still finding a way to win the game and
- 10:52Speaker 5: then being good enough when he had to be. My
- 10:55Speaker 5: initial takeaway, and I said this at halftime to a buddy,
- 10:59Speaker 5: and I thought they were two entirely different teams. And
- 11:02Speaker 5: the other team that I'm talking about is USC two
- 11:05Speaker 5: years ago with the Max Brosmer team. They trailed that
- 11:08Speaker 5: team at half, I believe, as well. I think they
- 11:10Speaker 5: trailed USC by seven at half, but you didn't feel
- 11:14Speaker 5: like the game was over. Now, after the game, you
- 11:17Speaker 5: come to find out, Coach Fleck, PJ was telling his
- 11:21Speaker 5: roster a lot of the same things I was saying.
- 11:25Speaker 5: I don't know if they're really dominating the game, but
- 11:27Speaker 5: they could easily be winning it. They still get first
- 11:30Speaker 5: possession out of half. They're in an okay spot. I
- 11:33Speaker 5: don't Think that this is all doom and gloom, but
- 11:36Speaker 5: you have to get out of your own way.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Right. Absolutely.
- 11:40Speaker 5: In the second half, they got out of their own way.
- 11:43Speaker 5: And who got in their own way?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Michigan.
- 11:47Speaker 5: And I've said this too. I've been very hard on
- 11:49Speaker 5: Danny Collins since he's been here. If you've watched Gophers 101,
- 11:53Speaker 5: people have heard me say this or listen. I don't
- 11:57Speaker 5: always think the Gopher defense, when they play somebody comparable
- 12:01Speaker 5: or punching up, so to speak, has come to play.
- 12:06Speaker 5: And I think there was very good evidence of that
- 12:09Speaker 5: last year, early into this year with Mississippi State, who
- 12:11Speaker 5: I believe is going to win at bare minimum eight games.
- 12:15Speaker 5: They're probably going to win nine or 10.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Okay.
- 12:19Speaker 5: However, that still doesn't mean you can't be more prepared
- 12:22Speaker 5: to play in some of these games. Well, I would
- 12:24Speaker 5: say the last two weeks with Michigan and Washington, say
- 12:28Speaker 5: what you want about their record. Those are comparable, if
- 12:31Speaker 5: not slightly, punching up teams to where I believe the
- 12:34Speaker 5: Gophers are at. And to be able to play good,
- 12:37Speaker 5: solid defense and be the reason you won those games,
- 12:40Speaker 5: because I do believe it's the defense that really did
- 12:43Speaker 5: win you both of those games.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Well, special teams, too, by the way.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Let's not forget about my guy Tom Weston and Luke Driswicki.
- 12:53Speaker 4: I knock on wood.
- 12:54Speaker 5: I feel reasonably confident every time he goes out, he's
- 12:57Speaker 5: going to kick a field goal and put it through
- 13:00Speaker 5: the uprights. But honestly, this was my takeaway. I thought
- 13:04Speaker 5: it was a wildly entertaining, borderline hideous game to watch,
- 13:09Speaker 5: but still very fun because it was hideous.
- 13:11Speaker 4: It was fun.
- 13:12Speaker 5: And when I say hideous, it's because you had what?
- 13:15Speaker 5: Five total turnovers. You had some penalties. You had teams
- 13:19Speaker 5: that seemingly could pick up a first down and then
- 13:22Speaker 5: punt the ball. Neither team was really capable of going
- 13:25Speaker 5: the length of the field.
- 13:27Speaker 2: And Michigan, too. They only had the ball for less
- 13:30Speaker 2: than a minute in the third quarter.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Correct. Crazy.
- 13:34Speaker 5: And think about that. The Gophers didn't even score. Did
- 13:36Speaker 5: they score three points? It must have been three or
- 13:39Speaker 5: six points, maybe. Off the top of my head, I
- 13:41Speaker 5: can't remember. But they didn't punch the ball in the
- 13:43Speaker 5: end zone until very early in the fourth quarter. So
- 13:47Speaker 5: just a very odd game, but I'm very happy for them.
- 13:52Speaker 5: people like my father, anybody basically older than me that
- 13:55Speaker 5: remembers the 77 game here. Look, I remember Mason winning
- 14:00Speaker 5: the jug. I remember Jerry kill winning it. I've watched
- 14:03Speaker 5: highlights of chip low Miller and the team doing it
- 14:06Speaker 5: in the eighties. So I at least have some recency
- 14:10Speaker 5: of seeing it, but it's all in the road to
- 14:11Speaker 5: be able to do it at home.
- 14:13Speaker 4: That's fun.
- 14:13Speaker 5: That's what college football is all about. I do think
- 14:16Speaker 5: there should be rules on storming a field, but I,
- 14:21Speaker 5: In my list of rules as to when you can
- 14:24Speaker 5: storm the field, the game applies on Saturday. By all means,
- 14:27Speaker 5: you have a team in basically five decades. Go on
- 14:30Speaker 5: to the field if you want.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Exactly. I mean, that's the thing, because, you know, is
- 14:34Speaker 2: this the great Michigan team of years past? Of course not. But,
- 14:38Speaker 2: you know, just like you said, man, you know, 1977.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I mean, I was a kid. I remember it, but
- 14:44Speaker 2: it was a long time ago. And just to have
- 14:47Speaker 2: the celebration, you know, I mean, you finally did it.
- 14:50Speaker 2: You won it here at home, like you said, you know.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And I think also, too, it was kind of a
- 14:55Speaker 2: subdued little attitude out on the field amongst us people
- 14:58Speaker 2: who actually went out and stormed it. It wasn't, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 2: like a couple years ago with Wisconsin and, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 2: things like that. But, hey, I'll take it. And just,
- 15:09Speaker 2: you know, with the way they won the game, with
- 15:11Speaker 2: the way they hung in there, You know, because we
- 15:15Speaker 2: were talking about it in the stands. Oh, are they
- 15:17Speaker 2: going to go go from this?
- 15:18Speaker 5: Yep.
- 15:19Speaker 2: You know, are they going to find a way to
- 15:21Speaker 2: blow this game? And to just be like, OK, well, hey,
- 15:25Speaker 2: you fell behind. You need a score, need a touchdown.
- 15:28Speaker 2: And then, all right, let's go get it. And they did.
- 15:30Speaker 5: And one thing we didn't see early on, and we're
- 15:33Speaker 5: now in year 10, but one thing that was largely
- 15:35Speaker 5: a staple of P.J. Fleck teams early on was didn't
- 15:39Speaker 5: matter if they were down by one or 21 at half,
- 15:41Speaker 5: they weren't coming back to win. Well, over the last
- 15:44Speaker 5: few years, we have seen that start to change a
- 15:46Speaker 5: little bit. So, yeah, I have zero issues with anything
- 15:50Speaker 5: that we saw on Saturday. There's going to be nitpicks,
- 15:54Speaker 5: but still as we're, what, four or five days removed
- 15:56Speaker 5: from the game. I don't know how nitpicky you can
- 16:00Speaker 5: be with a team that's 2-0 in the Big Ten,
- 16:02Speaker 5: and you can easily make the argument they could be 0-2,
- 16:05Speaker 5: but they're not.
- 16:06Speaker 4: They're 2-0, and they've won both games. So, this is.
- 16:10Speaker 5: rare air for gopher football athletics this doesn't happen often
- 16:15Speaker 5: and we certainly know that when it has happened vince
- 16:18Speaker 5: they tend to slow down the back half of the
- 16:20Speaker 5: season and we know what the back half of the
- 16:23Speaker 5: gopher schedule looks like yeah that's that makes saturday to
- 16:27Speaker 5: me it's not a must win i wouldn't even call
- 16:30Speaker 5: it a letdown if the gophers lose but it is
- 16:33Speaker 5: a very important game to.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Win Yeah, very well said. And to me, it actually
- 16:39Speaker 2: is kind of pushing up against the must-win because of
- 16:42Speaker 2: the toughness of the schedule after that. Let me ask
- 16:45Speaker 2: you this here, Ross. I was hanging out with Ricky Foggy,
- 16:49Speaker 2: old Gopher quarterback legend there, at the game. And he
- 16:54Speaker 2: brought up kind of an interest or asked me a question,
- 16:57Speaker 2: which I thought was very interesting. And I've been talking
- 16:59Speaker 2: to people about it here. You know... We were there
- 17:03Speaker 2: watching the national broadcast. Fox was in town, as most
- 17:07Speaker 2: people know by now, outside the stadium. And then they
- 17:10Speaker 2: came in and did their little set inside the stadium
- 17:13Speaker 2: where I was with Ricky Foggy. And he goes, Vince,
- 17:18Speaker 2: why do you think, you know, this show is here?
- 17:23Speaker 2: You know, why this game? You know, why today? You know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: this isn't a great Michigan team, you know, Michigan, Minnesota.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And he goes, it's P.J. Fleck, man. It's PJ Fleck.
- 17:35Speaker 2: You can love him. You can hate him, whatever you
- 17:37Speaker 2: want to say about him. This dude gets eyes on
- 17:40Speaker 2: Minnesota and, you know, we're, you know, middling big 10
- 17:46Speaker 2: program and, you know, to be on TV and in
- 17:52Speaker 2: kind of the national scene, as much as we are,
- 17:54Speaker 2: you know, I started thinking about it, Ross. And I
- 17:55Speaker 2: was like, I think Ricky is actually onto something here. What,
- 17:59Speaker 2: what do we, what do you think about that?
- 18:02Speaker 5: Well, it's, It's a great question. It's a great thought.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I tend to agree with it. I'm just thinking of
- 18:08Speaker 5: some things off the top of my head. So since
- 18:12Speaker 5: PJ has been here, you have had two visits from
- 18:15Speaker 5: game day. One was during a COVID season. So nobody
- 18:18Speaker 5: was really allowed there, but they were down there. They
- 18:20Speaker 5: did game day outside. I think it was a Michigan
- 18:24Speaker 5: game that they lost to. I believe JJ McCarthy, you
- 18:26Speaker 5: had the big game against Wisconsin.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yep. I was at that one. Got a press pass
- 18:30Speaker 2: for that. That was a blast.
- 18:32Speaker 5: You've had some national pretty big national TV games, including
- 18:36Speaker 5: 2019 against Penn state where you win. Was it the
- 18:40Speaker 5: first year PJ was here or maybe the second year
- 18:43Speaker 5: ESPN did like a four part mini series on him.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I forgot about that. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 5: And obviously there's the book and there's the horrible situation
- 18:54Speaker 5: with his, with his child. And, and you wouldn't wish
- 18:57Speaker 5: that upon anybody. I'm, I'm not a father, but just
- 19:00Speaker 5: the thought of that is, is horrifying. I think it's
- 19:06Speaker 5: exactly what you said. He's very polarizing. I have said
- 19:10Speaker 5: numerous times, I'm fairly pro PJ Fleck. There's things I
- 19:15Speaker 5: don't like. A lot of them are more on the field,
- 19:18Speaker 5: maybe game management type things and processes.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I tend to agree with you.
- 19:23Speaker 5: You're never really going to change somebody who they are.
- 19:26Speaker 5: And I know there's always this great debate about well,
- 19:30Speaker 5: is he really that way or does he turn it
- 19:31Speaker 5: off when he's not on camera? The two things I
- 19:35Speaker 5: would say to that are everybody who's around him and
- 19:37Speaker 5: near him says, no, he's always like that.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:40Speaker 4: But then the second part to that would be if
- 19:42Speaker 4: he turns.
- 19:43Speaker 5: It off when he's not on camera and he's a
- 19:45Speaker 5: different person, as long as he's not getting in trouble
- 19:48Speaker 5: and he's not out murdering people, does it really, does
- 19:52Speaker 5: it really matter? I mean, the, the program largely from
- 19:56Speaker 5: what we know, again, knock on wood has been run
- 19:59Speaker 5: very clean. Players are so seldomly in trouble. Again, knock
- 20:04Speaker 5: on wood when they are, it tends to be handled.
- 20:07Speaker 5: pretty judiciously and it doesn't turn out to be a
- 20:10Speaker 5: big deal, but yeah, I mean, and I don't want
- 20:13Speaker 5: to go too deep on this because I don't ever
- 20:17Speaker 5: want to be perceived as negative. I do think there's
- 20:20Speaker 5: a clock on PJ Fleck at Minnesota. Naturally this will
- 20:24Speaker 5: run its course and he's going to end up somewhere else.
- 20:28Speaker 4: I would have guessed it would have been by now.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I've heard people say that. Yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 5: I mean, you go eight and four, nine and three
- 20:35Speaker 5: this year. Maybe it's after this year, but it's also
- 20:38Speaker 5: entirely possible. Maybe it's not. Maybe the University of Minnesota
- 20:42Speaker 5: and P.J. Fleck are just destined to be together because
- 20:46Speaker 5: they both need each other. There's not a ton of
- 20:49Speaker 5: ADs in the country that are going to want to
- 20:53Speaker 5: deal with what he brings. There's also not a bunch
- 20:57Speaker 5: of power for schools that maybe need what he can bring.
- 21:02Speaker 5: So to that degree, it seems like they are a
- 21:06Speaker 5: bit of a perfect marriage. And the thing that I
- 21:09Speaker 5: go back to all the time, again, after a win,
- 21:13Speaker 5: you just won the little brown jug.
- 21:14Speaker 4: I get it.
- 21:15Speaker 5: But look at how much the players love him, how
- 21:19Speaker 5: complimentary they are of him, the things they say about him,
- 21:23Speaker 5: the things that they do for him. And I think
- 21:26Speaker 5: those are the things we don't pay enough attention to
- 21:30Speaker 5: those things. And we love to rip him for crowd surfing. Well, again,
- 21:34Speaker 5: another thing I got news for you in 20 years,
- 21:36Speaker 5: he probably won't be crowd surfing. That also has a
- 21:40Speaker 5: shelf life. So you don't have to worry about that
- 21:42Speaker 5: for the rest of his coaching career. But yeah, I
- 21:46Speaker 5: think it's the brand too. It's the row the boat brand.
- 21:49Speaker 5: It's his persona. It's his elite. It's his hyper. It's
- 21:54Speaker 5: his howfer. It's his Family, forget about me. I love you.
- 21:58Speaker 5: It's all that stuff that comes with it. And then
- 22:02Speaker 5: last week, very quickly, I think they were also, being honest,
- 22:05Speaker 5: I think they were also a little aided by game
- 22:08Speaker 5: day was in Iowa City for Iowa and Ohio State.
- 22:12Speaker 5: But whenever you get anything like that, it's good for
- 22:16Speaker 5: the program, so you should embrace it. And again, I
- 22:19Speaker 5: also don't care that he crowd surfed before the game.
- 22:22Speaker 5: That's his bit.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Whether they won by 30 or lost by 30, he
- 22:25Speaker 4: was going to defend it.
- 22:26Speaker 5: So I just, I kind of let that stuff go
- 22:29Speaker 5: because I care more about the results on the field.
- 22:33Speaker 5: And in my lifetime and in gopher history, if you
- 22:35Speaker 5: throw out Murray warmath, he's been about as successful as
- 22:39Speaker 5: you're ever going to maybe not ever see here, but
- 22:42Speaker 5: relatively great point to his predecessors. This is about as
- 22:47Speaker 5: good as it's, as it's ever been minus the national
- 22:50Speaker 5: championships and the big 10 championships. So yeah, I wish
- 22:53Speaker 5: people would take that more into account when they're ripping
- 22:56Speaker 5: on the, why are you crowd surfing after beating two
- 22:59Speaker 5: and 10 Rutgers?
- 23:00Speaker 4: Well, I don't know because they didn't lose.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I mean, it took me and again, folks sports done
- 23:08Speaker 2: right podcast here with Ross Brindle. It took me to
- 23:13Speaker 2: be in that crowd last week, you know, outside of
- 23:16Speaker 2: what I will still call Mariucci arena or three, three
- 23:20Speaker 2: and whatever it is. But, it just kind of hit home.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I'm 57 years old. Like I said, I, I remembered
- 23:27Speaker 2: the 77 game, you know, as, as a young kid
- 23:31Speaker 2: and to see what we were seeing here. And I
- 23:33Speaker 2: was just, I just went before I met my friends.
- 23:36Speaker 2: So it's just me. And I was soaking it all
- 23:38Speaker 2: in and, you know, watching the show go live and everything.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And I was like, you know what, man, it, yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 2: it is, it is PJ and everything, but who cares?
- 23:50Speaker 2: We got national TV here on Minnesota watching us, you know,
- 23:57Speaker 2: getting our name out there, all the positives that can
- 24:00Speaker 2: come with that. I mean, you know, recruiting, NILs, all
- 24:03Speaker 2: that stuff. And it is because of our head coach.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And it's just like, you know, yeah, you're right. He
- 24:08Speaker 2: isn't for everybody. A lot of older Gopher fans, you know,
- 24:12Speaker 2: definitely make that known on a lot of sports radio shows.
- 24:16Speaker 2: But this is just, it's a different time, Ross. It's just,
- 24:19Speaker 2: it's a different time and place. And to be able
- 24:21Speaker 2: to play in this game, especially when you don't have
- 24:24Speaker 2: a lot of NIL money like the Minnesota Gopher football
- 24:27Speaker 2: team does or does not have, have at it, PJ.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Have at it. I mean, if this is the worst,
- 24:35Speaker 2: go ahead.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Well, and I think the one thing that you will
- 24:38Speaker 5: see with a roster like the Gophers, and it's bound
- 24:41Speaker 5: to happen, and I know we're going to talk Purdue.
- 24:43Speaker 5: When you have a roster, and I've talked about this
- 24:45Speaker 5: numerous times, Another political term. The Gophers largely have to
- 24:49Speaker 5: win on the margins. They're going to play in a
- 24:51Speaker 5: lot of close games because oftentimes, at least when you
- 24:55Speaker 5: go to recruiting rankings and transfer portal rankings, the Gophers
- 24:59Speaker 5: aren't going to be the most talented team on the field.
- 25:03Speaker 5: But one thing they might be more often than not,
- 25:06Speaker 5: despite where I'm going to take this, is they might
- 25:09Speaker 5: be the better coach team most times, and they're often
- 25:12Speaker 5: more disciplined.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Typically, the Gophers win.
- 25:15Speaker 5: when they don't turn the ball over and they're the
- 25:17Speaker 5: least penalized. Yep. And last year, last year's team that
- 25:21Speaker 5: goes what seven and five wins the bowl games. They
- 25:24Speaker 5: go eight and five. That team was, I'm sorry. They
- 25:28Speaker 5: weren't very good. They could have easily been three and nine,
- 25:31Speaker 5: but when you would look at the end of the
- 25:33Speaker 5: game and go, how did they manage to win this game?
- 25:36Speaker 5: They had 240 less yards of offense. Oh, well, they
- 25:39Speaker 5: were only penalized two times for 15 yards. The other
- 25:42Speaker 5: team was penalized 11 times. And they didn't turn the
- 25:45Speaker 5: ball over and Purdue did three times or whatever. So
- 25:50Speaker 5: that's the sign of a good coach, in my opinion. However,
- 25:53Speaker 5: when you have teams that are built like that with
- 25:56Speaker 5: lesser resources, there is a chance for fluky things to happen.
- 26:00Speaker 5: What happened a few years ago at old Ryan field,
- 26:05Speaker 5: where you're leading by 14, heading to the fourth quarter,
- 26:08Speaker 5: maybe even 21. And before you know it, you're in
- 26:10Speaker 5: overtime and you lose. Stuff like that is going to happen.
- 26:13Speaker 5: And I don't want to make excuses for it because
- 26:15Speaker 5: at the end of the day, you're always allowed to
- 26:18Speaker 5: win the game, no matter who you're playing. And that
- 26:20Speaker 5: does fall on the head coach, right? He willingly choose
- 26:23Speaker 5: to take the job. This is his roster. This is
- 26:26Speaker 5: what they put together. So he's not above criticism, but
- 26:30Speaker 5: for some reason, and we do this with gopher basketball too.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Look at the numbers.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Gopher basketball goes to the NCAA tournament on average, once
- 26:38Speaker 5: like every three and a half years when they're not cheating.
- 26:42Speaker 5: right when they're not cheating but we always have this
- 26:45Speaker 5: opinion not that it shouldn't be a team that goes
- 26:47Speaker 5: to the NCAA tournament every year Mark Coyle has said that.
- 26:51Speaker 4: He's also said the football team should go to a bowl.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Game every year and he's not wrong about that right
- 26:55Speaker 5: but we love to act like they should go 10
- 26:57Speaker 5: and 2 every year in football and they should be
- 27:00Speaker 5: a three or four seed every year in the NCAA
- 27:03Speaker 5: tournament and that's never been the case which I know
- 27:06Speaker 5: is part of the frustration but We need to do
- 27:10Speaker 5: a better job viewing gopher athletics in the prism that
- 27:14Speaker 5: it lives in versus assigning it an alternate reality.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Exactly. I couldn't have said that one better myself. You know,
- 27:22Speaker 2: people got to realize that. All right, let's bring it
- 27:25Speaker 2: up to, you know, the next game here, Purdue. Can
- 27:30Speaker 2: they keep it up? I mean, can they keep this
- 27:33Speaker 2: thing going, keep this train on the tracks and. You know,
- 27:36Speaker 2: it's a night game. I'm sure Purdue will probably be
- 27:39Speaker 2: out there and some all blacks or some special unis.
- 27:43Speaker 2: And by the way, Purdue props to them. They're coming
- 27:45Speaker 2: off a big win at Illinois, big trophy game for them.
- 27:49Speaker 2: And yeah, the program down there in West Lafayette has
- 27:52Speaker 2: been down for a long time. And I just don't
- 27:56Speaker 2: want the gophers to do what gophers have done in
- 27:59Speaker 2: the past and blow this game. So, How did they
- 28:03Speaker 2: do it? How did they win? And give us a
- 28:05Speaker 2: little preview on what the Purdue Boilermakers are looking like
- 28:09Speaker 2: as well.
- 28:10Speaker 5: Well, I talked about this on Gophers 101 with Thor yesterday.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Available on YouTube, Apple, Spotify, wherever you get podcasts, yada, yada, yada.
- 28:20Speaker 5: It definitely feels, and you alluded to it, We just
- 28:23Speaker 5: always feel like gophers are going to go for. And
- 28:25Speaker 5: the thing that I love to say is remember before,
- 28:29Speaker 5: remember before Dabo Sweeney pushed Clemson over the edge to
- 28:32Speaker 5: win a couple, I think they ended up winning two
- 28:34Speaker 5: national championships. There was a term called Clemsoning, right? They
- 28:38Speaker 5: would go like, they would be so close. They just
- 28:40Speaker 5: need to win this game. And they're, they might go
- 28:42Speaker 5: to the national championship or they're going to be in,
- 28:45Speaker 5: I think it was before CFP, but they're so close.
- 28:47Speaker 5: They just need this win and it wouldn't happen. And
- 28:50Speaker 5: every year there'd be like a loss and everybody would
- 28:51Speaker 5: call it Clemsoning. We've been doing Clemsoning long before it
- 28:55Speaker 5: was cool for Clemson to do it.
- 28:56Speaker 4: That's right.
- 28:57Speaker 5: I mean, that's been in the DNA of gopher football.
- 29:01Speaker 5: The one thing I would say is if you're worried
- 29:03Speaker 5: about a letdown, if you're trying to be positive, the
- 29:06Speaker 5: easy way to look at it is, well, they could
- 29:08Speaker 5: have had the letdown after a nice win over Washington
- 29:11Speaker 5: and coming home and losing at home to a beatable
- 29:14Speaker 5: Michigan team.
- 29:14Speaker 4: They tried to lose, but they didn't. They found a
- 29:19Speaker 4: way to win it.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Purdue picked up their first big 10 win since, Literally
- 29:23Speaker 5: the last week of the Big Ten season in 2023.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Here's how long ago that was, Vince. Do you want
- 29:30Speaker 5: to guess who Purdue beat? Who their last Big Ten
- 29:33Speaker 5: win was? Their last Big Ten win prior to Illinois
- 29:37Speaker 5: last Saturday was?
- 29:39Speaker 2: Minnesota.
- 29:41Speaker 6: Indiana.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Oh, God. Yes, yes, yes. In the old Oakland. Yeah,
- 29:46Speaker 2: pre-Signetti back when Indiana was sucking for life.
- 29:50Speaker 5: So I think it'll be interesting to see what does
- 29:53Speaker 5: the crowd look like on Saturday night? I'm sure they'll
- 29:55Speaker 5: have a good crowd. Is it going to be a
- 29:56Speaker 5: full house? I guess I'd be shocked if it is.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I would too, but it'll be a lively crowd, you know? Correct.
- 30:02Speaker 5: And in a weird way, that might be good. That's
- 30:04Speaker 5: probably better than a sleepy 20,000 people.
- 30:07Speaker 4: At 11 a.m.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Where maybe you don't have to bring as much of
- 30:11Speaker 5: your own energy. I know the crowd's not cheering for you.
- 30:15Speaker 5: But I do think it's easier for a team to
- 30:17Speaker 5: get jazzed and stoked when it's 30, 40,000 people versus 20, 25,000.
- 30:23Speaker 4: And they're all settling in going, boy, can our team
- 30:25Speaker 4: compete today?
- 30:27Speaker 5: I thought even before Purdue won last Saturday that Purdue
- 30:30Speaker 5: wouldn't be a pushover. They're playing better if you give
- 30:33Speaker 5: them the victory, which obviously we do now. They're two
- 30:36Speaker 5: and three. And you're starting to see a team that
- 30:40Speaker 5: is trying to take the shape or the form of
- 30:44Speaker 5: what they're head football coach wants to do, and you
- 30:47Speaker 5: look at even what they're doing at quarterback. Again, they're
- 30:50Speaker 5: five games into the year. Their quarterback's thrown one interception,
- 30:53Speaker 5: Ryan Brown. He hasn't thrown a ton of yards. He's
- 30:57Speaker 5: a bit of a dual threat, maybe not like DeMond
- 30:59Speaker 5: Williams or Camario Taylor, but he can move around. The
- 31:03Speaker 5: Gophers have seen him. He's completing passes at a pretty
- 31:07Speaker 5: high percentage. their Achilles heel is they just don't stop anybody.
- 31:11Speaker 5: They've largely until last week been.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Allergic to playing defense.
- 31:15Speaker 5: So yeah, I would hope that the gophers are able
- 31:19Speaker 5: to keep a run game going, keep the pocket clean
- 31:22Speaker 5: for Drake Lindsay, who can hopefully go North of 200 yards.
- 31:28Speaker 5: Maybe throw a few touchdown passes. And most importantly to me,
- 31:32Speaker 5: the recipe for losing is turnovers. And I know that's
- 31:36Speaker 5: such an easy thing to say, but, But a team
- 31:38Speaker 5: that in theory that is going to have trouble stopping you,
- 31:43Speaker 5: don't turn the ball over and.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Especially don't do it early. You just can't do it.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Even if you go three and out and punt, that
- 31:51Speaker 5: is more preferable to turning the ball over and making
- 31:55Speaker 5: a defense feel high and mighty about themselves and feeling good.
- 32:00Speaker 4: My gut says the Gophers. find a way to win.
- 32:03Speaker 5: But my bit has been, I'm going to pick Purdue
- 32:05Speaker 5: to win because I picked both Washington and Michigan.
- 32:07Speaker 2: To keep it going.
- 32:09Speaker 5: And the Gophers are two and oh, but my heart
- 32:12Speaker 5: of hearts, my gut says it's like a 27, 20, 30, 23.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Type of game.
- 32:20Speaker 5: And it is a, it's a big game for this
- 32:22Speaker 5: reason to Vince. If the Gophers win their three and oh,
- 32:26Speaker 5: and they have two weeks for the buildup and excitement
- 32:29Speaker 5: of Iowa at home. If you lose, and again, I
- 32:35Speaker 5: agree with what you're saying.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I think it's a very important game.
- 32:37Speaker 5: I think when you look at a lot of the
- 32:39Speaker 5: metrics and statistics, I think these teams are a lot
- 32:42Speaker 5: closer than people think they are.
- 32:44Speaker 4: I would agree with that.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 32:47Speaker 5: I don't know how much of a letdown that it
- 32:50Speaker 5: would be, but the perception is that it would be
- 32:52Speaker 5: a letdown.
- 32:53Speaker 4: You're 2-0 in the Big Ten. They're 1-1. You're 4-1.
- 32:55Speaker 4: They're 2-3.
- 32:59Speaker 5: So whether it's by one or 21, if you've got
- 33:01Speaker 5: to beg, borrow, and steal, if Tom Weston has to
- 33:04Speaker 5: bury somebody at the two-yard line again, or Drizwicki needs
- 33:08Speaker 5: to hit one from 55 as time expires.
- 33:10Speaker 2: However, you've got to do it.
- 33:11Speaker 4: You've got to find a way to win the game.
- 33:13Speaker 4: You just have to. Am I going to be heartbroken
- 33:15Speaker 4: if they don't?
- 33:17Speaker 5: No, I'll be annoyed.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, for sure. Absolutely, Ross. I mean, come on.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I mean, just, you know, let's just put it out there. Everybody's,
- 33:26Speaker 2: you know, trying to set it up for Iowa. You know,
- 33:28Speaker 2: I'm not going to talk about Iowa because I want
- 33:31Speaker 2: to get into some Vikings talk here. But, you know, after, well,
- 33:34Speaker 2: after last week, you know, the who hate Iowa chant
- 33:37Speaker 2: started up in the crowd and this and that. And
- 33:40Speaker 2: another reason I'm not talking about Iowa because Iowa kicks
- 33:43Speaker 2: our ass.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:45Speaker 2: You know, one of my best friends who was just
- 33:49Speaker 2: over here at the apartment the other night, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 2: I was telling him because, you know, he came over
- 33:53Speaker 2: and he was going to talk some crap a little bit.
- 33:55Speaker 2: And I was just like, hey, man, you got every
- 33:56Speaker 2: right to say what you want. Because not only this year,
- 34:00Speaker 2: but I mean, we got to get some wins against
- 34:02Speaker 2: Iowa here. This is really embarrassing. Three, four wins in
- 34:07Speaker 2: the past 20, 25 years against this team. And so
- 34:11Speaker 2: that's why. And like, even when they started those chants
- 34:14Speaker 2: last weekend at the stadium, I was just like, Oh God,
- 34:16Speaker 2: shut up. Yeah. Yeah. I just, I'm done with it.
- 34:21Speaker 5: No.
- 34:21Speaker 4: And I'm with you.
- 34:22Speaker 5: And that's why I do think again, is the Iowa
- 34:25Speaker 5: game a must win game? I think it's a must
- 34:28Speaker 5: win in the sense of, boy, you'd really like to
- 34:30Speaker 5: beat a quote unquote rival. And they are, but at
- 34:34Speaker 5: the moment it's not a true rivalry because you've basically
- 34:36Speaker 5: won one game the last decade, which I will give you.
- 34:39Speaker 5: I'm not like the Iowa fans that, that love to say, no.
- 34:44Speaker 5: And then they always love to say it wasn't a
- 34:46Speaker 5: fair catch. And I go, yeah, you're right. It was
- 34:47Speaker 5: an invalid fair catch signal. So it was, it was
- 34:51Speaker 5: not a fair catch, but no, you're right. And that's
- 34:54Speaker 5: why to me, I think it's important to, beat Purdue,
- 34:59Speaker 5: maybe get a few less Gopher fans to sell their
- 35:01Speaker 5: tickets to Iwegians, which, by the way, I will say this,
- 35:05Speaker 5: Gopher fans have been pretty good about that the last decade.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Shout out to the student section the past few years
- 35:10Speaker 2: as well, man. I mean, it has been filled. They
- 35:13Speaker 2: are there. They are rowdy. And they are, I mean,
- 35:16Speaker 2: they bring it, man. And, you know, I used to
- 35:17Speaker 2: work for Gopher Sports a couple years ago, so I
- 35:21Speaker 2: was down there covering the games and, you know, talking
- 35:24Speaker 2: with those guys in the stadiums. And those students, man,
- 35:27Speaker 2: they were, I mean, week in and week out. So
- 35:30Speaker 2: props to the gopher student section.
- 35:32Speaker 5: You can tell Vince though, they have not quite been humbled.
- 35:35Speaker 5: Like we have again, 40, you said you're 57.
- 35:38Speaker 4: And I get it.
- 35:39Speaker 5: They're all 18 to 22 for the most part. And
- 35:42Speaker 5: a lot of them might not have paid much attention
- 35:44Speaker 5: to go for football until they got to the university.
- 35:47Speaker 4: That's it.
- 35:48Speaker 5: And that's entirely allowable. but I was telling my buddies
- 35:52Speaker 5: I could do without the bleep you Michigan chance. I mean,
- 35:55Speaker 5: I always think that that stuff's a, I get it.
- 35:57Speaker 2: No, I hear you.
- 35:58Speaker 5: A lot of them are in the bottle, whatever, but
- 36:00Speaker 5: then there's like eight minutes left in the fourth quarter
- 36:03Speaker 5: and they're chanting overrated.
- 36:05Speaker 4: I'm like, you're winning by six.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Exactly. This game is not over. People can't be talking
- 36:11Speaker 2: like that. All right. So again, folks, we got Ross
- 36:14Speaker 2: Brindle here from scored North joining us. Let's turn it
- 36:18Speaker 2: to the pro side of town. Minnesota Vikings, man, they
- 36:25Speaker 2: beat Miami. Props to Miami for coming to play. I mean,
- 36:30Speaker 2: you know, again, this was going to be, I don't
- 36:32Speaker 2: want to say it was going to be the walkover,
- 36:33Speaker 2: but it's kind of the big test game because it
- 36:36Speaker 2: was like if Kyler can't really get this squad moving
- 36:39Speaker 2: here against a supposedly, you know, bad team. And I
- 36:43Speaker 2: think the Dolphins might be a little bit better than
- 36:46Speaker 2: they seem right now, but I'll digress for that. But
- 36:50Speaker 2: It's all Kyler talk. You know, I was at my
- 36:53Speaker 2: friend's bar, Tommy Kramer, Dante Culpepper, down at Fathead Bill's there,
- 36:58Speaker 2: you know, doing some signings and things like that. And,
- 37:03Speaker 2: you know, sitting there with the Vikings fans and just
- 37:06Speaker 2: kind of listening around and stuff. That's all anybody cared
- 37:09Speaker 2: about was the quarterback player. All right, Ross, it's open
- 37:14Speaker 2: mic for you, man.
- 37:15Speaker 6: Yeah, well.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Have at it.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Whether it's Kyler Murray or it's insert quarterback who gets
- 37:20Speaker 5: drafted in April or insert quarterback mercenary, you sign in
- 37:25Speaker 5: the off season. You talk about PJ Fleck being polarizing.
- 37:29Speaker 5: The Vikings quarterback is going to be polarizing until, until
- 37:33Speaker 5: they find who the masses believe to be a franchise quarterback.
- 37:37Speaker 5: I know that some and a good chunk thought that
- 37:40Speaker 5: that was Kirk Cousin's, I always said you can win
- 37:43Speaker 5: a Super Bowl with Kirk Cousins. It's just a lot
- 37:45Speaker 5: harder than with other quarterbacks, but you could do it.
- 37:49Speaker 5: So I was never fully anti-Kirk, but I still wouldn't
- 37:53Speaker 5: say that he met the bar of most Vikings fans
- 37:56Speaker 5: saying this.
- 37:56Speaker 4: Is a franchise quarterback.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah.
- 37:59Speaker 4: And I could be wrong on that.
- 38:01Speaker 5: I could be wrong on that, but he's the closest
- 38:03Speaker 5: they've had since Dante Culpepper. And by the way, good
- 38:06Speaker 5: for Kirk playing pretty well with the.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Raiders right now.
- 38:11Speaker 5: I'm willing to give this time with Kyler. And I
- 38:13Speaker 5: said this on Before I Die. That's a Vikings podcast
- 38:16Speaker 5: I do once a week with Leighton James, Jason Harmon.
- 38:19Speaker 5: I do that in the Purple Daily Podcast Network the
- 38:22Speaker 5: day after a Vikings game.
- 38:24Speaker 4: There's really no other option.
- 38:26Speaker 5: So you have to ride it out with Kyler Murray.
- 38:28Speaker 4: I don't care what people say.
- 38:29Speaker 5: You're not trading for a franchise quarterback at the trade
- 38:31Speaker 5: deadline in the NFL. It just doesn't happen. And if
- 38:34Speaker 5: it does happen, just make it up because everybody wants
- 38:37Speaker 5: to will it into existence. Say it's Justin Herbert. He's
- 38:40Speaker 5: not going to show up and in six days have
- 38:42Speaker 5: a grasp of the offense. It's going to take him
- 38:45Speaker 5: all of the rest of the regular season.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:47Speaker 4: I like Carson Wentz.
- 38:48Speaker 5: I've jokingly said when the Vikings play in the NFC
- 38:51Speaker 5: championship game this year, Carson Wentz will be the starter.
- 38:55Speaker 5: I assume that was going to be because of maybe
- 38:57Speaker 5: injury or getting hot at the right time. And I
- 39:00Speaker 5: love Max Brosmer, but he's at best in his career
- 39:04Speaker 5: going to be a 10-year journeyman backup quarterback. which is
- 39:08Speaker 5: a hell of a way to make a living so.
- 39:09Speaker 2: I was gonna stack some nice checks and correct i'm.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Not ripping on him but at this point you're not
- 39:16Speaker 5: making him the starting quarterback so you have to give
- 39:20Speaker 5: this time to work with kyler murray the other side
- 39:22Speaker 5: of the argument which i agree with is well you
- 39:25Speaker 5: probably would have been four and oh with jj mccarthy
- 39:28Speaker 5: i do agree with that there's a fatal flaw in
- 39:30Speaker 5: that though. JJ McCarthy is no longer on the roster.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 39:35Speaker 5: And whether you agree with that or not, I would
- 39:38Speaker 5: have tried to see it out more. I said in
- 39:40Speaker 5: the off season, I wouldn't have went this route. I
- 39:43Speaker 5: would have said we're starting JJ and we're committing to.
- 39:46Speaker 4: Going 13 and four. or four and 13 with, or
- 39:49Speaker 4: with him and we're moving and then we'll move on.
- 39:52Speaker 4: He's the guy, but that's not the path that they chose.
- 39:55Speaker 5: So the path that they chose is really the only
- 39:58Speaker 5: path you can go with at this point. And I
- 40:00Speaker 5: would submit to you again, easy answer. It can't possibly
- 40:04Speaker 5: look worse than it has the first four weeks. It's
- 40:07Speaker 5: going to get better. I think now what we need
- 40:10Speaker 5: to figure out is what is better look like is better.
- 40:14Speaker 4: A team that can shoot.
- 40:15Speaker 5: Is better a team that can show up and maybe
- 40:17Speaker 5: score 30 points and win a game that way if
- 40:20Speaker 5: they have to? Or is better just, well, they can
- 40:23Speaker 5: score 23 and hopefully the defense holds the opponent. I
- 40:27Speaker 5: do think they're going to get there. I just think
- 40:31Speaker 5: the one thing we're not talking a lot about is
- 40:35Speaker 5: Kyler shows up, quarterback shows up, plays 11 plays, gets concussed.
- 40:39Speaker 5: So he basically didn't play the first two games. comes
- 40:42Speaker 5: back wide receiver one, almost immediately gets injured. Doesn't play
- 40:46Speaker 5: the rest of that game. Doesn't play the next game
- 40:49Speaker 5: that Kyler Murray's in. Then on Sunday, you lose your guard.
- 40:53Speaker 5: You've had instability, the offensive line, Dara saw missed a
- 40:56Speaker 5: bit of time. He's in concussion protocol. And now we
- 41:00Speaker 5: find out Jordan Addison is dealing with something. They're so
- 41:03Speaker 5: downtrodden in the receiver room. They had to go sign
- 41:06Speaker 5: the corpse of Odell Beckham. So I just think, it's
- 41:12Speaker 5: a real easy excuse to make.
- 41:14Speaker 4: We all look for confirmation bias.
- 41:16Speaker 5: We all do. Yeah, we all do it. But I
- 41:19Speaker 5: think let's get through this weekend, win or lose. Let's
- 41:23Speaker 5: give it the bi-week and let's see what this thing
- 41:25Speaker 5: really looks like when the schedule really picks up. And
- 41:29Speaker 5: if you need, and if you need to go back
- 41:30Speaker 5: to Carson Wentz at that time, just because you think
- 41:32Speaker 5: he gives you a fighting chance to maybe score seven
- 41:36Speaker 5: more points in a game, then you can do it
- 41:38Speaker 5: at that point. I just think now, And even out
- 41:42Speaker 5: of the bye, there's no point in doing that.
- 41:44Speaker 4: I mean, let's just let it play out just a
- 41:46Speaker 4: little bit. Let's, let's breathe and see what happens.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Okay. And that's where I'm at. Exactly. And again, excuse
- 41:52Speaker 2: me for looking down here, but yeah, we got the
- 41:54Speaker 2: saints coming up by, and then, yeah, we come back
- 41:58Speaker 2: and then that schedule starts heating up. We got the Colts.
- 42:01Speaker 2: We're on the road in Detroit. You got the bills
- 42:03Speaker 2: coming to town at green Bay, green Bay, maybe playing better,
- 42:07Speaker 2: but at that point, San Francisco, Atlanta, uh, carolina new
- 42:11Speaker 2: england oh my goodness.
- 42:13Speaker 4: I know.
- 42:15Speaker 5: This amen but if the vikings lost on sunday and
- 42:18Speaker 5: i just walked up to you say you had went
- 42:21Speaker 5: on you went on an aaron rogers darkness retreat for
- 42:24Speaker 5: the first five weeks of the season right right and
- 42:26Speaker 5: i said vince welcome back just so you know the
- 42:28Speaker 5: vikings are four and one you'd go awesome you you
- 42:32Speaker 5: you probably wouldn't care about how they got to four
- 42:34Speaker 5: and one i think You would say, that's great because
- 42:37Speaker 5: I know how tough the schedule is.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Ross, it is so funny you mention that because I
- 42:40Speaker 2: was sitting on the executive deck that I'm looking out
- 42:43Speaker 2: at here over right now, having some very fine Elijah
- 42:48Speaker 2: Craig bourbon the other night, thinking that it's Zach. Same thing, man.
- 42:53Speaker 2: It's like, look, if somebody came up to you and said, hey,
- 42:58Speaker 2: your team's undefeated, you're going to take that every single time.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Yes.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Of course. And then obviously, you know, like you said,
- 43:08Speaker 2: we've been so focused on the quarterback play. And that's
- 43:10Speaker 2: why I'm glad you just brought up everything you did,
- 43:12Speaker 2: because it reminded me the sports governor. Also, we got
- 43:16Speaker 2: cracks in that offensive line are obviously top offensive juggernaut
- 43:21Speaker 2: is not playing right now. Yeah, we got some issues
- 43:25Speaker 2: beyond Kyler that we need to kind of, you know,
- 43:29Speaker 2: focus on as well. and getting that offensive line back
- 43:32Speaker 2: together actually is probably project one.
- 43:36Speaker 5: It's also, I'd say what you want about it, but
- 43:39Speaker 5: before injury, it's a rather cobbled together running back room.
- 43:43Speaker 4: It's a, it's an older air. It's an older.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Aaron Jones, um, Claiborne unproven at best. And I, and
- 43:53Speaker 5: I know you're not asking, you don't want to ask
- 43:56Speaker 5: a ton of him and I'm blanking, uh, Mason.
- 43:59Speaker 4: You know, he's got the thumb injury.
- 44:01Speaker 5: There's another one, by the way, Josh Oliver's done for
- 44:03Speaker 5: the year as well, more than likely. So I, I,
- 44:08Speaker 5: it is excuses and I understand that, but also let's
- 44:13Speaker 5: just see, can a few guys get healthy? Maybe things
- 44:17Speaker 5: start to click. I know it's the dolphins. It looked
- 44:20Speaker 5: like maybe it was starting to click the back half
- 44:22Speaker 5: of the third quarter and the fourth quarter.
- 44:25Speaker 4: I know Kyler's, career arc.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Has always been up and down up and down up
- 44:30Speaker 5: and down you hope if you are a Kevin O'Connell
- 44:33Speaker 5: believer you get him to level out and play consistently
- 44:38Speaker 5: somewhere along the lines that he was able to do
- 44:40Speaker 5: with Sam Darnold and then the Seahawks were able to
- 44:43Speaker 5: I don't want to say take it to the next
- 44:45Speaker 5: level because the Seahawks I know I'm switching gears in
- 44:47Speaker 5: you a little bit the Seahawks asked Sam Darnold to
- 44:50Speaker 5: do a little bit less than the Vikings were asking
- 44:53Speaker 5: him to do I think If we're being fair, I
- 44:55Speaker 5: think we can all say that. Now, that doesn't mean
- 44:57Speaker 5: you take the Super Bowl away from Sam Darnold and
- 45:00Speaker 5: the Seahawks because Sam Darnold was phenomenal in.
- 45:03Speaker 4: The Super Bowl.
- 45:04Speaker 5: But the path of getting there was not, hey, Sam,
- 45:07Speaker 5: go out and throw 35 times. Throw for 330 yards.
- 45:12Speaker 5: With the Vikings, it kind of was that. That's not
- 45:15Speaker 5: what they asked him to do in Seattle. And I
- 45:17Speaker 5: think Kevin O'Connell along the way has learned whether we're
- 45:21Speaker 5: actually getting anything form of run game we still need
- 45:24Speaker 5: to commit to it to at least bleed some clocks
- 45:27Speaker 5: set our offense up a little bit and not ask
- 45:29Speaker 5: our offense to win us a bunch of a bunch
- 45:32Speaker 5: of games because we have a good defense but also
- 45:35Speaker 5: we can't tire that really good defense out either so
- 45:38Speaker 5: we can't go over three in the past game and
- 45:40Speaker 5: 90 seconds later right they're back.
- 45:43Speaker 6: Out exactly that's a great point people are really ripping
- 45:47Speaker 6: him right now and they should the offense is his
- 45:50Speaker 6: baby and it and it looks pretty bad However, he
- 45:53Speaker 6: should get some credit for some of the changes he
- 45:57Speaker 6: has made as a head coach.
- 45:58Speaker 5: That's another thing I like to preach, Vince. If you're
- 46:00Speaker 5: going to rip, which I love to do, I think
- 46:03Speaker 5: you need to give praise and give credit when it's
- 46:06Speaker 5: warranted because you can't always be.
- 46:09Speaker 4: One way or another.
- 46:10Speaker 5: I got a question on Gophers 101 in the comments,
- 46:14Speaker 5: and it was, how can you call yourself a Gophers fan?
- 46:16Speaker 4: You guys are negative. It's like, well, okay, first off,
- 46:19Speaker 4: where does it say fans can't be negative?
- 46:22Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 46:23Speaker 5: Second off, if I'm positive all the time, that's a
- 46:25Speaker 5: little disingenuous if I don't believe it. So I think that's,
- 46:30Speaker 5: that's how I try and view all of this. And
- 46:33Speaker 5: I'm annoyed by Kevin O'Connell and the offense. It's been,
- 46:36Speaker 5: it's been dreadful, but he also is the head coach
- 46:38Speaker 5: of the team and they're four and oh, so he
- 46:39Speaker 5: should get credit for that as well.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Very well said. And exactly, you know, and obviously, you know,
- 46:45Speaker 2: what on the other side of the ball, the defense,
- 46:47Speaker 2: which has been, the star of the show and Brian
- 46:51Speaker 2: Flores and, you know, Hey, KOC has got to go.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Brian's there to take his place, all that stuff. You know,
- 46:59Speaker 2: you don't have to spend too much time on the
- 47:01Speaker 2: defense Ross, because, you know, we've talked about it a lot.
- 47:05Speaker 2: You've talked about it on your shows and whatnot, but
- 47:09Speaker 2: what are you seeing with this defense? That's just making
- 47:12Speaker 2: it click so far.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:15Speaker 5: And I think it's a, I'm going to, steal a
- 47:17Speaker 5: talking point from a lot of people far smarter than
- 47:20Speaker 5: me but i truly believe it i think it's having
- 47:22Speaker 5: a ceo of the defense which brian flores is who
- 47:27Speaker 5: is really comfortable with his system and knows the type
- 47:31Speaker 5: of guys that can play it so he can find
- 47:34Speaker 5: value maybe where other people can't also why he can
- 47:38Speaker 5: look at it probably not his decision but he can
- 47:41Speaker 5: be okay we're trading a Jonathan Grenard because he can,
- 47:45Speaker 5: to steal a money ball term, one of my favorite movies,
- 47:47Speaker 5: he can recreate in the.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Aggregate, Jonathan Grenard.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Maybe we get, maybe we get some from Dallas Turner.
- 47:54Speaker 5: We get a little bit from Kyle Van Noy, who
- 47:57Speaker 5: we signed, signed off of the scrap heap. We can
- 48:00Speaker 5: maybe get a little bit more from Van Ginkle. I
- 48:02Speaker 5: think he's really good at identifying who can play in
- 48:07Speaker 5: his system and knowing that not everybody can, which is
- 48:10Speaker 5: another weird thing when you, Look at his defense and
- 48:14Speaker 5: we'll see how this goes. I'm actually very interested to
- 48:17Speaker 5: see how this goes as the season goes on.
- 48:19Speaker 4: I'm almost positive it's the second oldest defense in the NFL.
- 48:24Speaker 5: And if that's true, if that's true, and I guess
- 48:27Speaker 5: logic would actually make me believe that it probably is
- 48:30Speaker 5: Van Noy's been in the league for what? 13 seasons, 12,
- 48:34Speaker 5: 13 seasons. I think Harrison Smith was on the Vikings
- 48:37Speaker 5: the last time to go. The gophers beat Michigan at
- 48:40Speaker 5: home prior to last Saturday. So I just think he's,
- 48:46Speaker 5: he's really good at that. And everybody talks about it
- 48:50Speaker 5: and look, some team's going to crack it at some point.
- 48:52Speaker 5: There's going to be a game where the bike, it's
- 48:54Speaker 5: a boom or bust defense. There's going to be games
- 48:57Speaker 5: where the Vikings get taken to the woodshed, but I'm
- 48:59Speaker 5: reasonably confident when that happens. it will be fixed and
- 49:03Speaker 5: rectified the following week. And I think he's just a
- 49:05Speaker 5: really good identifier of talent, but also knowing when the
- 49:09Speaker 5: draft comes around or free agency comes around, just because
- 49:14Speaker 5: that guy is 27 and perceived by the NFL to
- 49:17Speaker 5: be a really good player, doesn't mean he's going to
- 49:20Speaker 5: be really good for me. I'd rather have this 35
- 49:22Speaker 5: year old for a season or two, because I know
- 49:25Speaker 5: he can do what needs to be done. And that
- 49:29Speaker 5: to me is, I think what has been the biggest
- 49:32Speaker 5: benefit to him as defensive coordinator.
- 49:35Speaker 2: All right. And folks, we got to just a few
- 49:37Speaker 2: more minutes here with Ross. Ross, let me ask you
- 49:40Speaker 2: this about the Vikings, and then I want to talk
- 49:42Speaker 2: to you a little bit about Score North. When the
- 49:47Speaker 2: season is done, the Minnesota Vikings, are they a playoff team,
- 49:55Speaker 2: in your opinion? Just, you know, and I know we're
- 49:58Speaker 2: looking at several, you know, weeks down the way and everything. But,
- 50:03Speaker 2: I mean, that was kind of the thing I was wondering.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Can this team– be a playoff team with the quarterback
- 50:09Speaker 2: we have now. And I think so, but you know,
- 50:14Speaker 2: I'm just, I'm trying to stay positive with this four
- 50:17Speaker 2: and all. I really am. And I've kind of made
- 50:20Speaker 2: it a point this week because the Kyler talk is
- 50:23Speaker 2: the easy stuff, right? You know, Oh, he, he's short.
- 50:26Speaker 2: He can't do this and that blah, blah, blah. But
- 50:29Speaker 2: you brought up, like I said, other key issues that's
- 50:31Speaker 2: going on. And I just want us to get past
- 50:35Speaker 2: new Orleans and, get into that bye week, and maybe
- 50:39Speaker 2: everybody can just pause, take a little breath, and we
- 50:42Speaker 2: go from there.
- 50:43Speaker 5: Well, I would say yes, even if they lose to
- 50:45Speaker 5: New Orleans. They're a playoff team, and there's a couple reasons.
- 50:48Speaker 5: And by the way, New Orleans is very losable. I
- 50:50Speaker 5: know they had a bad night on Monday night, but
- 50:52Speaker 5: I do think there is a bit of a benefit
- 50:54Speaker 5: to getting them on one less day of rest. Typically,
- 50:58Speaker 5: they would have an off day this week. They're not
- 51:00Speaker 5: going to. I also like that Chuck is a bit
- 51:03Speaker 5: more of a stationary quarterback against the Vikings defense that
- 51:06Speaker 5: loves to blitz. So we'll see how new Orleans preps
- 51:09Speaker 5: and tries to counteract that. But I would say at
- 51:12Speaker 5: this point at four and oh, you would expect them
- 51:14Speaker 5: to be a playoff team. I mean, you're, you're asking
- 51:16Speaker 5: them essentially to go six and seven from here on
- 51:19Speaker 5: out to get to 10 and seven, 10 and seven,
- 51:23Speaker 5: almost virtually guarantees you a playoff spot with seven playoff teams, which, what,
- 51:28Speaker 5: five years into this, I still hate that.
- 51:30Speaker 4: Go back to six.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a whole different show.
- 51:33Speaker 5: It's a whole different show, whole different discussion. But I
- 51:35Speaker 5: think they are for a couple different reasons. The defense and, again,
- 51:39Speaker 5: knock on wood, the special teams play has largely been good.
- 51:43Speaker 5: It's a little bit like go for football. At this point,
- 51:46Speaker 5: they're playing complementary football to a point of, okay, the
- 51:49Speaker 5: offense is probably just barely getting by, but the defense
- 51:52Speaker 5: and special teams are at a high level.
- 51:54Speaker 4: So you're winning because of that.
- 51:56Speaker 5: And we love in sports to say that special teams
- 51:59Speaker 5: is not that important. There's a reason why the old
- 52:01Speaker 5: adage is it's a third of the game. They might
- 52:03Speaker 5: not be on the field for 33% of the game,
- 52:07Speaker 5: but they are on the field for incredibly important plays
- 52:09Speaker 5: in a game where the one play can lose you
- 52:12Speaker 5: a game. Miss field goal, give up a punt return,
- 52:15Speaker 5: muff a punt, fumble a kick return. So I think
- 52:18Speaker 5: it's that the defense and special teams have largely played well,
- 52:21Speaker 5: and I do expect the offense to get better. And
- 52:23Speaker 5: we can talk all day long about that schedule, I
- 52:26Speaker 5: know we all do it. We do it at score North.
- 52:28Speaker 5: You do the shows where you predict the schedule. It's
- 52:30Speaker 5: the live schedule show. The schedule just came out. The
- 52:34Speaker 5: schedule is tough. Now it's probably going to be tough,
- 52:37Speaker 5: but you can play the lions and Jared.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Goff's not playing. You could play.
- 52:40Speaker 5: I mean, who are the other teams that you need?
- 52:42Speaker 5: You could play new England and Drake Mays, not playing.
- 52:45Speaker 5: You know, you just don't know who you're going to
- 52:46Speaker 5: play and what teams are going to look like when
- 52:49Speaker 5: you play them. But at four and Oh, It's the
- 52:53Speaker 5: Minnesota Vikings. It's Minnesota sports. So I can't say it
- 52:56Speaker 5: would shock me if they didn't make the playoffs. We've
- 52:58Speaker 5: seen it before. They've had nice starts before and missed
- 53:01Speaker 5: the playoffs. I brought this up a couple of days ago.
- 53:03Speaker 5: A Mike Tice team started off five and oh, and
- 53:05Speaker 5: missed the playoffs. So it can happen, but I guess I,
- 53:10Speaker 5: I wouldn't be shocked. I would be surprised because the
- 53:12Speaker 5: offense is going to get better. How can it not?
- 53:16Speaker 2: Very well said. All right, Ross. Listen, man, first off,
- 53:19Speaker 2: thank you for being on the show. But before I
- 53:22Speaker 2: get you out of here, man, what's it like being
- 53:25Speaker 2: over at Score North? You know, coming, I followed Score North,
- 53:31Speaker 2: you know, back when it was 1500 KSTP AM and
- 53:35Speaker 2: all the guys had their show over there. This rebranding
- 53:39Speaker 2: of Score North has been very, I think it's been great, honestly.
- 53:43Speaker 2: I mean, to, you know, you guys are not in
- 53:46Speaker 2: the studio. It's not like a typical radio station anymore.
- 53:49Speaker 2: And if you could just share with us, what is
- 53:53Speaker 2: it like working there and, you know, being part of
- 53:55Speaker 2: these podcasts with the other guys? Cause I think you
- 53:57Speaker 2: all do a really good job over there.
- 54:00Speaker 5: Well, I think it's, it's a group of like-minded individuals
- 54:04Speaker 5: and it, it, so everybody, everybody loves to have fun.
- 54:07Speaker 5: Everybody loves to work hard. And I mean, everybody, you know,
- 54:10Speaker 5: artist woods is new to our fold. He's on flagrant
- 54:14Speaker 5: Howells does a lot of stuff for social media AJ
- 54:17Speaker 5: does a lot of stuff with social media he's on
- 54:19Speaker 5: a handful of shows now starts with Phil Judd and
- 54:23Speaker 5: Declan and even Thor and all the hard work that
- 54:25Speaker 5: they do and you know I I'm just a long
- 54:29Speaker 5: for the ride no I mean I'll give myself some
- 54:30Speaker 5: credit I you know I do I do a lot
- 54:34Speaker 5: of stuff to help the guys but we all we
- 54:36Speaker 5: all love it you know we all we all work
- 54:37Speaker 5: hard we want to have fun and we all believe
- 54:39Speaker 5: in what we're doing and to not I don't want
- 54:43Speaker 5: to elevate it so much, but I think we all
- 54:46Speaker 5: believe in the community of what we're doing and understanding again,
- 54:51Speaker 5: sports is important and we want people to come to
- 54:54Speaker 5: us to be an outlet and be an escape.
- 54:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 54:57Speaker 5: And if you disagree with us, that's fine. I always joke,
- 55:01Speaker 5: especially on YouTube. If you want to take a shot
- 55:03Speaker 5: at me, go ahead. It helps the algorithm. So more
- 55:06Speaker 5: people are going to, more people are going to, more
- 55:08Speaker 5: people are going to find us because you, because you
- 55:10Speaker 5: took a shot at me. Doesn't mean I have to
- 55:12Speaker 5: agree with it or I'm even going to give it
- 55:14Speaker 5: a split second of thought.
- 55:15Speaker 4: But it's interesting.
- 55:16Speaker 5: We're just in a very interesting time in media where
- 55:20Speaker 5: people's habits are changing, but they haven't so changed to
- 55:26Speaker 5: a point that I think radio is still heavily important
- 55:30Speaker 5: in today's world and in today's society. And it's going
- 55:33Speaker 5: to remain that way. People have said you I mean,
- 55:36Speaker 5: you remember radio. serious radio was supposed to kill terrestrial.
- 55:40Speaker 2: Radio right yeah yeah.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Last time i checked.
- 55:45Speaker 5: It's all still here but maybe what's happening is maybe
- 55:48Speaker 5: people just listen or consume a little bit in different
- 55:51Speaker 5: ways they get their favorite radio shows but it's in
- 55:54Speaker 5: podcast form they see their favorite radio host but it's
- 55:58Speaker 5: now on my phone i'm watching a short of them
- 56:00Speaker 5: so that stuff has changed and it's it's been really
- 56:03Speaker 5: fun for us to be in on just this podcast
- 56:06Speaker 5: space where it is largely just YouTube and audio podcasts.
- 56:10Speaker 5: And it's been fun to be a part of a
- 56:13Speaker 5: medium that is growing and growing by the day. And
- 56:17Speaker 5: it's also fun from the standpoint of everybody has this in,
- 56:21Speaker 5: in work.
- 56:22Speaker 4: Doesn't matter what you do. There's always competition.
- 56:25Speaker 5: We're always working to try and be better and work
- 56:27Speaker 5: harder and strive to be better because we know there's
- 56:29Speaker 5: other people doing what we're doing. And believe it or not, Vince,
- 56:33Speaker 5: part of the reason why I'm here is I want
- 56:34Speaker 5: other people to do what we're doing. It elevates the space.
- 56:38Speaker 5: And in my opinion, the cream will always rise to
- 56:41Speaker 5: the top. But the more people that are doing this,
- 56:44Speaker 5: it lends more relevancy and credence to not what we're doing,
- 56:48Speaker 5: but just what this space is doing as a whole.
- 56:52Speaker 5: And you don't have to get your media from just
- 56:55Speaker 5: one place anymore. Almost all TV stations now, you can
- 56:58Speaker 5: get all their product on your phone, right?
- 57:00Speaker 3: Every.
- 57:01Speaker 5: everybody gets it. So the, the world is constantly changing
- 57:05Speaker 5: and adapting and we're just doing our one little small
- 57:09Speaker 5: part to try and be a part of that. But
- 57:11Speaker 5: really Vince, it starts and sorry to cut you off.
- 57:13Speaker 5: I've done that 10 times. So I apologize on that,
- 57:17Speaker 5: but it just, it starts working, working with good people.
- 57:21Speaker 5: I say this every, every chance I get, cause I,
- 57:25Speaker 5: I don't want to say I get defensive, like a,
- 57:26Speaker 5: you know, like a proud dad or whatever, but, um,
- 57:31Speaker 5: you know, Phil saw where this industry was going six,
- 57:34Speaker 5: seven years ago and where he thought there might be
- 57:36Speaker 5: an Avenue. And, you know, we, we take a lot of, um,
- 57:41Speaker 5: direction from him and he is, you know, I say athlete,
- 57:44Speaker 5: he's a, he's a student of the game, right? In
- 57:48Speaker 5: this space, Phil is a student of the game. And,
- 57:51Speaker 5: and I know personally myself and everybody.
- 57:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:54Speaker 5: I mean, we will show him things and say, Hey,
- 57:56Speaker 5: we think we should try this. And, he's receptive to that,
- 57:59Speaker 5: but we have learned a lot from him and he
- 58:02Speaker 5: has shared a lot of knowledge. So I always like
- 58:04Speaker 5: to give him his props when I feel like he
- 58:05Speaker 5: should get them.
- 58:06Speaker 2: So, Hey, there you go. Hey, on Twitter at the
- 58:11Speaker 2: Ross Brindle, the man is everywhere. Gophers one-on-one is must
- 58:16Speaker 2: see TV in my book. And you know, I love
- 58:19Speaker 2: watching you guys. You guys do a phenomenal job of
- 58:22Speaker 2: breaking down the game, picking it up, going to the
- 58:25Speaker 2: next game and Ross, you know, First off, thank you for,
- 58:30Speaker 2: you know, when you came over at the Fathead Bills
- 58:32Speaker 2: the other day, introduce yourself. I was very happy because
- 58:35Speaker 2: I have been watching you for a long time. It
- 58:38Speaker 2: is just nice to talk to you in person, obviously,
- 58:42Speaker 2: to have you on the show. But I'm a big fan.
- 58:44Speaker 2: I love what you've been doing, so keep up the
- 58:47Speaker 2: good work.
- 58:48Speaker 5: We also, as you are well aware, have a ton
- 58:51Speaker 5: of mutual friends and know a lot of the same people.
- 58:54Speaker 5: So I was surprised it took that long. for us
- 58:57Speaker 5: to actually say hello in the flesh I will say
- 59:00Speaker 5: on the Ross Brendel I always joke that I'm old
- 59:04Speaker 5: enough now I went to the Lakeville high school there
- 59:07Speaker 5: was a lot of graduated and not and now they're two,
- 59:10Speaker 5: but also when I signed up for Twitter way too
- 59:13Speaker 5: late to the game or X, there was a Ross
- 59:16Speaker 5: Brendel who already had the handle, but I think he
- 59:20Speaker 5: did like some form of hate speech and got suspended
- 59:23Speaker 5: almost right away.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 59:24Speaker 5: But I can't have the handle. He still has the handle,
- 59:27Speaker 5: but he hasn't tweeted it. Ross Brendel hasn't tweeted since, like, 2012,
- 59:32Speaker 5: but I can't have it.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Oh, wait a minute.
- 59:35Speaker 4: So I'm the Ross Brendel because of that.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Well, geez.
- 59:39Speaker 4: Did you find it? Does it say, like, account suspended
- 59:41Speaker 4: or something like that?
- 59:42Speaker 2: No, I was just making sure. I was just making sure.
- 59:47Speaker 5: No, but there was another one, and I tried getting it,
- 59:50Speaker 5: and I'm like, I can't have it.
- 59:51Speaker 4: He hasn't tweeted in eight years.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 59:54Speaker 2: It was. Anywho. I come to discover after all these
- 59:58Speaker 2: years of doing Sports Done Right, there was another Sports
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Done Right podcast out there. See? I mean, it doesn't matter, man.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: That's just the way it works in this new media
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: that we're in.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: And everybody's good idea was somebody else's idea first.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Exactly. All right, Ross. Thanks, man. Thank you so much,
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: my friend, for doing this. I hope we can catch
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: up with you down the road here. And Who knows,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: maybe after this Iowa game, the Gophers are going to
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: be in a very unique position of maybe making some
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: noise again here. First time really since 2019. And for
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: our Vikings, hey, 5-0 is always good as well.
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: Get healthy. Get healthy.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Yes, get to that bye week and get healthy.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: All right, folks.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: The one and only Ross Brendel. Ross, thank you so much.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: Thank you very much. Appreciate it.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: All right, there's our guy, Big Ross. Again, scoring north,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: some of my favorite guys over there. And, you know,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: the Twin City sports scene is really filled with a
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: lot of really cool people, man. I think that's the
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: one thing I've been taking away since I've been able
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: to meet some of the ladies and gentlemen of our
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: local scene. Just all seem to be really good people.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: So Ross right up there as well. I am Vince Wright,
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: the sports governor. I want to thank Seventh Avenue Pizza.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: Go get you some. I tell you every time. Best
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: frozen pizza in the state. Shout out to the Nelson
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: family over there as well. Thank you for listening. We'll
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: be back next week with another Sports Done Right. Thank
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: you for listening to Sports Done Right with your host,
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: the governor of Minnesota Sports Talk, the Honorable Vince Wright.
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: Check out Sports Done Right every Tuesday night And when
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: it's over, stay up on all of the breaking sports
