- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 0:01Speaker 2: That's what he said. That's what he said, that's what
- 0:05Speaker 2: he said.
- 0:07Speaker 3: We've got Trevor on today, so let's focus on the
- 0:10Speaker 3: topic of tipping and then we'll get the hitter perspective
- 0:13Speaker 3: from Todd Father. So this is Devin Williams talking about
- 0:17Speaker 3: how last year he said effort, he put his hands up,
- 0:20Speaker 3: he changed the starting position of his hands in an
- 0:23Speaker 3: effort to combat tipping.
- 0:24Speaker 2: The problem is it was unnatural.
- 0:26Speaker 3: He kept it until last month and will samon wrote
- 0:29Speaker 3: a story about how he made an adjustment and now
- 0:32Speaker 3: Williams is suddenly rolling for the Mets. Trevor take us
- 0:36Speaker 3: through this, because I also think it's evolved. The league
- 0:39Speaker 3: has gotten so good at picking up tips through tech
- 0:42Speaker 3: and AI and everything else that I think it's caused
- 0:45Speaker 3: a lot of paranoia. We always have paranoia in our game,
- 0:47Speaker 3: and I think tipping has been the topic of paranoia
- 0:51Speaker 3: over the last couple of years, because you know, you
- 0:53Speaker 3: see coaches kind of getting out of their box looking
- 0:57Speaker 3: players behind pitchers. They're more obvious than ever with giving
- 1:01Speaker 3: signs to hitters and sometimes it could be bs. So
- 1:03Speaker 3: where are we at with all of this? To relate
- 1:06Speaker 3: to what Devin was talking about.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting the comedy made it and uh be
- 1:13Speaker 1: interesting that he's you know, he talked about how he
- 1:15Speaker 1: wants wanted to avoid tipping now without knowing what the
- 1:19Speaker 1: tip was. You know, it's it's hard to tell. Uh,
- 1:23Speaker 1: It's a trade off a lot of times, especially if
- 1:25Speaker 1: you're doing it really quickly. We it's funny the Mets.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The Mets or the York team seemed to be having
- 1:32Speaker 1: a lot of this happening recently. But like Ryan Helsley
- 1:35Speaker 1: last year made a big change too. He used to
- 1:38Speaker 1: be away from his body as well. I'm brought it
- 1:40Speaker 1: closer because there was some concerns about the space between
- 1:45Speaker 1: his hands when he came set and that can be
- 1:47Speaker 1: an issue when you throw two pitches right if you
- 1:49Speaker 1: give any little thing it could be it can be
- 1:53Speaker 1: something that that that can be picked up on. And
- 1:55Speaker 1: then as soon as you know, and Todd I'll have
- 1:57Speaker 1: comments on this too, as soon as like it's people
- 1:59Speaker 1: are correct. A couple of times, it's all you know,
- 2:03Speaker 1: it's everyone's running to grab their bat. And this is
- 2:06Speaker 1: a thing that Tory Hunter sat me down once and
- 2:08Speaker 1: was like, hey, man, I see your curve ball every
- 2:10Speaker 1: single time. Everyone knows it in center field and right
- 2:13Speaker 1: everyone knows, and it's it's really bad and we're crushing it.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But he told me this the year after he was
- 2:19Speaker 1: playing against me, so it didn't really help me, but
- 2:22Speaker 1: it made me aware that, like, yeah, of course I'm
- 2:24Speaker 1: probably tipping things at times, and it's nice to have
- 2:26Speaker 1: someone pick them up. So for him to say, hey,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was doing this thing, it seemed because he did
- 2:33Speaker 1: smooth his stuff his year out quite a bit towards
- 2:35Speaker 1: the end of last year, and maybe there was something
- 2:37Speaker 1: he was doing where it was really easy. Because he
- 2:39Speaker 1: throws that change up the airbender and he throws a
- 2:42Speaker 1: fastball like he throws two pitches. They're very different pitches.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So for guys like that, it's even it's the night
- 2:51Speaker 1: and day between their performance, and it's it's jarring for
- 2:56Speaker 1: them to be like, how am I just terrible now?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Like I've been so good for so long. You don't
- 3:01Speaker 1: just go from incredibly good to incredibly bad like this.
- 3:05Speaker 1: This doesn't usually happen. So but for him to go
- 3:08Speaker 1: back and say, I'm uncomfortable, and because I'm uncomfortable, it's
- 3:12Speaker 1: making my pitches work, which I've actually already looked this up.
- 3:15Speaker 1: His change up was dropping on average five inches less.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And so when you come set in certain places, that
- 3:23Speaker 1: can change the way that your arm path moves because
- 3:26Speaker 1: you're moving it from a different point in space to
- 3:27Speaker 1: get it on time to throw it. So like shapes change,
- 3:30Speaker 1: they can start to meld into each other, like your
- 3:32Speaker 1: pitches literally can get worse. And if you feel uncomfortable,
- 3:35Speaker 1: then your confidence has gone too. So then you're like,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know what, I'm tired of this. I'm going to
- 3:40Speaker 1: go back to what I was doing and see I
- 3:42Speaker 1: see if that tip is even really there or maybe
- 3:44Speaker 1: he's found a happy medium right where it's closer and
- 3:47Speaker 1: now that he's done it for a while, And that's
- 3:49Speaker 1: what it sounds like, And you got to do the
- 3:51Speaker 1: trade off. Am I tipping or do I feel like
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'm tipping? Or am I uncomfortable? And if I feel
- 3:57Speaker 1: like I'm tipping, I'm going to be uncomfortable. So it's
- 3:58Speaker 1: just gonna make that worse. Like I need to be comfortable.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That's the only thing that matters right now. I'd be
- 4:02Speaker 1: confident what I'm doing and then I'll go from there.
- 4:04Speaker 1: And that it sounds like, that's the decision he made
- 4:07Speaker 1: and it is paid off, and his changeup is close
- 4:10Speaker 1: to back to the shape that he used to be,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and so he was right. If that's something he noticed,
- 4:15Speaker 1: which everything I've heard about him is it is something
- 4:18Speaker 1: he would have noticed. He is like a hawk on
- 4:20Speaker 1: that stuff and paying attention to how everything's moving. You
- 4:23Speaker 1: kind of have to when he throw two pitches. So
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's just like a give or take. And at the
- 4:28Speaker 1: end of the day, it doesn't really matter how much
- 4:30Speaker 1: the tip like guys are acting on it. If you
- 4:34Speaker 1: think that they are, oftentimes that's enough to make you
- 4:37Speaker 1: not as good as you should be.
- 4:40Speaker 4: So here's my thing about it. He was fantastic with
- 4:44Speaker 4: the Brewers. There was no problems. Comes over with the Yankees,
- 4:49Speaker 4: get hit around a little bit, and then everybody thinks
- 4:51Speaker 4: there's something going on, you know what I mean, I honestly,
- 4:55Speaker 4: for me, he throws a lot of pitches, and when
- 5:00Speaker 4: when people aren't swinging at that change up, then all
- 5:03Speaker 4: of a sudden, you gotta throw that fastball. When the
- 5:05Speaker 4: fastball is not working, then there's that, you know, pictures
- 5:07Speaker 4: or whomever thinks something's wrong. And I think, like you said,
- 5:11Speaker 4: maybe it's all in your head. I mean, he's a
- 5:12Speaker 4: fantastic picture. But at the same token, you got to
- 5:17Speaker 4: understand these are professional hitters too. You're gonna get hit.
- 5:19Speaker 4: So you have two pictures. You throw that change up.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Some guys are gonna go up to the plate sitting
- 5:24Speaker 4: change up. Some guys are gonna go up to the
- 5:25Speaker 4: plate saying, I'm not gonna hit that change up. It's
- 5:27Speaker 4: too good. I'm gonna sit on fastball. But again, you
- 5:30Speaker 4: gotta throw strikes. And for me, anytime somebody was tipping,
- 5:33Speaker 4: if I can get sixty percent right out of one hundred,
- 5:38Speaker 4: I was gonna take it because it was so darn
- 5:40Speaker 4: it was so damn hard to hit. And I don't know,
- 5:43Speaker 4: maybe we're looking too much into this. Uh just be yourself,
- 5:47Speaker 4: be yourself and do what you gotta do, in my opinion,
- 5:50Speaker 4: and you know, if it's something so egregious, then it's
- 5:52Speaker 4: something to fix. But I feel like it was just
- 5:55Speaker 4: a bit different once he got moved over to the Yankees,
- 5:58Speaker 4: and and you know the upcoming days after that.
- 6:02Speaker 5: We love our dog fella who splays out in the
- 6:04Speaker 5: open sun on our floor like she's an underwear model.
- 6:07Speaker 1: And that's why we love her so much. To scratch
- 6:10Speaker 1: her belly.
- 6:12Speaker 6: She's a cutie.

- 7:00Speaker 3: and is not engaged in the business of insurance. Yeah,
- 7:03Speaker 3: and also Yeah, when you're a pitcher, Trevor, you want
- 7:06Speaker 3: to be comfortable. That's a big part of the story
- 7:08Speaker 3: where he felt so unnatural with what he was doing.
- 7:12Speaker 3: But at the same time, you do need to hide
- 7:15Speaker 3: the baseball. I mean just about everyone. Yeah, sure there
- 7:18Speaker 3: might be a few guys where like, my stuff's so good,
- 7:20Speaker 3: I don't care. But in most cases you don't want
- 7:24Speaker 3: the hitter knowing what's coming. And so there's that balance
- 7:28Speaker 3: of I'm hiding the ball, but I don't feel good
- 7:30Speaker 3: and my change up doesn't have as much consistency, and
- 7:32Speaker 3: then that's a problem. And then like Todd Toddler's talking about, ye,
- 7:36Speaker 3: you've got people spitting at pitches and now he's racking
- 7:38Speaker 3: up walks and then gives up one big knock and
- 7:40Speaker 3: he unravels like that's what we saw. And then in
- 7:42Speaker 3: the past month he's been nails.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That's you nailed it too. I think that we there's
- 7:48Speaker 1: a little bit of a misconception. And this is something
- 7:50Speaker 1: Tory said as well, that like tips, picking up on
- 7:52Speaker 1: a tip isn't necessarily like I know what's coming when
- 7:57Speaker 1: I didn't know what was coming forward. Yes, there are
- 7:59Speaker 1: some super egregious get a rookie who does no idea
- 8:01Speaker 1: was maybe throwing his curve all the time, and they
- 8:03Speaker 1: know it's coming right. That was a blatant tip, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: they were just right one hundred percent of time. But
- 8:09Speaker 1: I think most of the time just an inkling of
- 8:13Speaker 1: like I have something to go on. Maybe going sixty
- 8:15Speaker 1: forty could be that, like what he's talking about, specially
- 8:17Speaker 1: when you throw two pitches a of coin flip. Anyways,
- 8:19Speaker 1: if I'm able to be sixty percent instead of fifty percent,
- 8:22Speaker 1: that could be all that really matters. Also, there's one
- 8:26Speaker 1: thing to realize here and I did a deep dive
- 8:28Speaker 1: on this last year with him with Devin was while
- 8:31Speaker 1: he was with the Brewers, they were never worse than
- 8:35Speaker 1: top five defense in the league at any point, especially
- 8:38Speaker 1: offense or outfield defense. So they were making they were
- 8:41Speaker 1: getting the balls that at the time when he went
- 8:44Speaker 1: to the Yankees was twenty first in defense, especially in
- 8:46Speaker 1: the outfield, even weaker just in terms of range as well,
- 8:51Speaker 1: And so that maybe balls that are getting in the
- 8:54Speaker 1: gaps that were just kind of run down before aren't
- 8:56Speaker 1: getting run down and you're feeling like, what what's going
- 8:59Speaker 1: on here? We'll also last thing I'll leave you with too,
- 9:01Speaker 1: in terms of pictures. We when we are finding these things,
- 9:07Speaker 1: we our assumption is that we suck first, so it's
- 9:12Speaker 1: something's not moving right, something like I'm throwing the wrong pitches,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm not locating well, all of those things are our first,
- 9:19Speaker 1: like we're making sure that nothing is hugely changed there.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Or like if I can go look and I'm hitting
- 9:26Speaker 1: my spot over and over again and they're still getting
- 9:27Speaker 1: me like, then I'm like, okay, there's there's maybe additional
- 9:31Speaker 1: information here. There might be a tip because rarely and pictures,
- 9:35Speaker 1: if you hit at you every single spot, you're just
- 9:37Speaker 1: not going to give up that many hits in the
- 9:39Speaker 1: big leagues like anywhere. It's just it's just not especially
- 9:42Speaker 1: with guys like stuff like that. If you hit your
- 9:43Speaker 1: spot every time, you're just not going to So you
- 9:45Speaker 1: tend to be like, am I hitting my spot every time?
- 9:48Speaker 1: And then if you're like, I hit my spot a
- 9:49Speaker 1: few times there, then that pitch has never been hit
- 9:51Speaker 1: that hard off me. That seems a little bit like
- 9:54Speaker 1: that was a quality swing off of somebody who shouldn't
- 9:56Speaker 1: have had that quality of swing. That's when maybe something
- 9:59Speaker 1: clicks in your head. It's an ongoing issue, so most
- 10:03Speaker 1: guys tend to not assume it's a tip. Tips like
- 10:05Speaker 1: the last thing they check. That's oftentimes where it takes
- 10:10Speaker 1: a while to figure it out too, because it's just
- 10:12Speaker 1: not something you think about as much as you think
- 10:13Speaker 1: about Like we just assume maybe I just stink, And
- 10:18Speaker 1: I think hitters do that too, like yeah, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: maybe they know something about me, or maybe I'm just bad.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Like we just assume that we're bad first, and then
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's hard and then you build off of that. So
- 10:28Speaker 1: just just something to know that most guys, it's the
- 10:32Speaker 1: last resort when it comes to tipping.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 3: One other note here, guys, I feel like we're in
- 10:39Speaker 3: a world where any outcome needs to have reasoning to it,
- 10:43Speaker 3: and it needs to have like really numerical reasoning to it, like, oh,
- 10:46Speaker 3: so and so got Smasha what happened?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Like we're his you know what were his pitch grades?
- 10:50Speaker 5: Right?
- 10:51Speaker 3: You start to like dissect everything, and sometimes it's like,
- 10:54Speaker 3: sure there's luck involved on batted balls in play, but
- 10:58Speaker 3: their streakiness too. Todd Filey Gill say this, like, hey,
- 11:01Speaker 3: you don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Also,
- 11:03Speaker 3: some guys are just consistent and some are not. I mean,
- 11:06Speaker 3: I'll use the extreme example. Sometimes you watch Frambervaldez and
- 11:08Speaker 3: you're like, how does anyone hit this guy? And if
- 11:11Speaker 3: they do, it's just a ground ball or he strikes
- 11:13Speaker 3: you out. And then sometimes you watch him and you're like,
- 11:15Speaker 3: he can't locate. He's a mess, and you could see
- 11:18Speaker 3: him mentally unravel. That's been his thing for years now.
- 11:22Speaker 3: But he's not the only one. Like sometimes you see
- 11:24Speaker 3: someone get lit up for seven runs and you're just like, oh,
- 11:27Speaker 3: what happened? They must have a tip on him. That's
- 11:29Speaker 3: not necessarily true. You might have just had a crappy
- 11:32Speaker 3: day and he missed some spots and you know it's
- 11:35Speaker 3: two guys on and you missed a spot, the right
- 11:38Speaker 3: guy was up.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He hit a three run homer.
- 11:39Speaker 3: It happens again, you know, like the way pitching works
- 11:42Speaker 3: with a starter, even if you're only going one hundred pitches,
- 11:45Speaker 3: you make a few mistakes.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I know some of this sounds cliche, but it's true.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Like we try and find out almost too much sometimes
- 11:52Speaker 3: with everyone.
- 11:52Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, I agree, looking too much into things
- 12:00Speaker 4: any places for the Mets. So I mean, listen, they're
- 12:03Speaker 4: try and find a lot of things on the Mets
- 12:05Speaker 4: all the time and they will blow it up some
- 12:08Speaker 4: that minuscule So for sure, that's just the nature of
- 12:11Speaker 4: the beast.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you could be going through a slow stretch in
- 12:16Speaker 3: most other markets and it's just going to fly by
- 12:18Speaker 3: I Meanwhile, Devin Williams has feature articles about his week
- 12:23Speaker 3: to week performance. That's the thing. You guys both know
- 12:26Speaker 3: that you guys both played for the Mets. You both
- 12:28Speaker 3: played in New York. Of course, that just doesn't happen
- 12:30Speaker 3: in other places, right, that's not You're not getting the
- 12:33Speaker 3: feature on the week by week in Cincinnati for Todd
- 12:36Speaker 3: Father or in Minnesota for Trevor.
- 12:38Speaker 2: You're just not you know, not as much. It's just
- 12:40Speaker 2: not going to get attention. You're not going to have.
- 12:42Speaker 3: A swarm of reporters like, Hey, tell me about your
- 12:45Speaker 3: hands and what's changed, you know with your setup.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's about figuring out for your performance and as also,
- 12:53Speaker 1: just more so than maybe other places, you're also trying
- 12:55Speaker 1: to find a reason so that you can explain it.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And maybe that's something that you don't have as much
- 13:00Speaker 1: pressure to do in other places at times like I didn't,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I didn't feel the need to explain to Minnesota media
- 13:06Speaker 1: when things when I knew what was happening when I'm
- 13:08Speaker 1: working on I didn't feel the need as much to
- 13:11Speaker 1: say this is I got it, guys, I see it,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and I'm fit working on it. Here's an update, here's
- 13:16Speaker 1: an update. Team like that just wasn't something that I
- 13:19Speaker 1: felt the need too. And it's just part of it.
- 13:21Speaker 1: That's one of the difficult the harder places, harder parts
- 13:24Speaker 1: about playing in a big market. But that's just what
- 13:26Speaker 1: comes with it. It's not I don't think there's anything
- 13:28Speaker 1: I don't think it's wrong. I don't think anything should change.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It's just what it is, and it's something that the
- 13:33Speaker 1: calculus that happens as a player, and sometimes that can
- 13:35Speaker 1: slow down that process a little bit if you don't
- 13:37Speaker 1: feel like you can kind of just like retreat into
- 13:39Speaker 1: the background and fix it real quick before anyone notices,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and then be like, hey, I'm fine, Like you know,
- 13:43Speaker 1: it'd be nice to do that, but sometimes you got
- 13:45Speaker 1: to do it in front of everybody the way it is.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Yep, it's what pays the bills. There's a lot of
- 13:50Speaker 2: attention there.
- 13:51Speaker 3: You'd rather have that than have nobody ever talking to you, Like,
- 13:54Speaker 3: does anyone even care?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Right?
- 13:56Speaker 3: You want people to care. They care, that's why they're
- 13:58Speaker 3: asking the question. And the reporters are asked in the
- 14:00Speaker 3: question because people are clicking the articles or they're listening
- 14:02Speaker 3: to our show and watching this clip like, that's why
- 14:04Speaker 3: all of this gets stirred up. We've got Brewers pitcher
- 14:11Speaker 3: Chad Patrick joining us right now on FT Chad, great
- 14:14Speaker 3: to have you on the show. Appreciate the time. How's
- 14:16Speaker 3: life right now with the first place ball club?
- 14:20Speaker 6: It's great?
- 14:21Speaker 7: You know, locker rooms, locker rooms, pretty happy, and you
- 14:25Speaker 7: know we're looking for more wins.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yes, plenty of season left to go. Well, let's start
- 14:30Speaker 3: here because you know you're matching up this weekend against
- 14:33Speaker 3: the Dodgers. Last year, the team swept them in the
- 14:37Speaker 3: season series. We were talking about this earlier, and then
- 14:39Speaker 3: you know, the Dodgers swept the Brewers in the postseason.
- 14:42Speaker 3: Do you treat these just like, hey, this is part
- 14:44Speaker 3: of our marathon season to get through. Do you look
- 14:48Speaker 3: at it as any kind of litmus test? When the
- 14:49Speaker 3: guys are talking right like, you're not living and dying
- 14:52Speaker 3: off one series in baseball, that's never the case. But
- 14:54Speaker 3: do you kind of look at this series and go, hey,
- 14:55Speaker 3: let's see how we match up against the Dodgers this year.
- 14:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I think.
- 15:02Speaker 7: Like it's kind of like the last series we had
- 15:04Speaker 7: against the Cubs, almost like it felt like the playoffs
- 15:08Speaker 7: never ended. So that, at least to me, that's what
- 15:12Speaker 7: it felt like. I know in this series it's probably
- 15:15Speaker 7: gonna be treated the same as you know, as far
- 15:20Speaker 7: as you know matchups and playing them.
- 15:23Speaker 6: So I think I think it's gonna be a fun weekend.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I'm looking at these numbers here from when you were
- 15:31Speaker 4: a starter now reliever. I know it's not you know,
- 15:36Speaker 4: over a course of a year, but these are unbelievable.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Man.
- 15:39Speaker 4: If you're talking about k percentage from fifteen percent to
- 15:42Speaker 4: thirty three and then walk percentage twelve to four, Like,
- 15:46Speaker 4: what has been a difference from you being a starter
- 15:49Speaker 4: now a reliever? Like have you changed anything or is
- 15:52Speaker 4: it kind of the same approach that you've had as
- 15:55Speaker 4: a starter when you go into the game, Like, talk
- 15:57Speaker 4: to me about your thought process there.
- 16:01Speaker 7: I think they're the first part of it is when
- 16:05Speaker 7: you make the transition of being a starter into reliever.
- 16:11Speaker 7: I think you know, you got to kind of get
- 16:13Speaker 7: over yourself and not look at it in a negative way.
- 16:18Speaker 7: And then secondly, don't look at it as an emotion,
- 16:22Speaker 7: look as add another opportunity to do. You know, special
- 16:28Speaker 7: things and special situations.
- 16:32Speaker 6: I've I had a lot.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Of conversations with a couple of guys in the clubhouse,
- 16:37Speaker 7: and you know, so many different things were said and
- 16:44Speaker 7: you take those things in into your head and you know,
- 16:49Speaker 7: I like the journal now and I take the way
- 16:53Speaker 7: from the negative aspect of the game and drop those
- 16:57Speaker 7: down before I go go out for the game, and
- 17:01Speaker 7: it helps a lot.
- 17:04Speaker 1: First of all, yes, you are correct. Being moved to
- 17:08Speaker 1: the bullpen not a demotion. You can have a lot
- 17:11Speaker 1: of fun out there. Speaking of fun, you recently got
- 17:15Speaker 1: a what fore inning save? Was it yesterday or two
- 17:18Speaker 1: days ago? Last Saturday? Last Saturday? So four inning save?
- 17:25Speaker 1: First of all, did you know that you would get
- 17:28Speaker 1: a save for that? And two talk a little bit
- 17:31Speaker 1: about the differences in terms of like being in that
- 17:35Speaker 1: leverage because as a starter, and this is something that
- 17:38Speaker 1: you know subconsciously, you probably realize that you're pitching like
- 17:41Speaker 1: someone's probably coming in after me. There's gonna be more,
- 17:44Speaker 1: there's gonna be time to get I always said it
- 17:46Speaker 1: this way, like undo any mistakes that I made like
- 17:49Speaker 1: we could always come back later. But as a reliever,
- 17:51Speaker 1: the closer you get to the end of the game,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you're like, actually, it's me, Like I'm the guy. I
- 17:54Speaker 1: gotta keep them here. No one's coming to save me.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's a little bit of a different feeling that way.
- 17:59Speaker 1: So one where you you did you realize that, say
- 18:02Speaker 1: one could be coming, And two talk a little bit
- 18:04Speaker 1: about maybe the differences in terms of mindset for going
- 18:08Speaker 1: out and finishing game versus start.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Yeah, the night before.
- 18:14Speaker 7: I was sitting down there as the ninth inning, and
- 18:16Speaker 7: I think Trevor. Trevor might had closed that game out.
- 18:20Speaker 7: I kind of like had this thought, man. I was like, man,
- 18:23Speaker 7: I wonder what it feels like to be in the
- 18:24Speaker 7: ninth inning. You know, how much adrenaline would be running
- 18:28Speaker 7: through you or you know, one run ball game type
- 18:31Speaker 7: of thing. And then you know, the next day, I
- 18:34Speaker 7: come in in the sixth inning and just had you know,
- 18:41Speaker 7: I was told before that it was gonna be bulky, uh,
- 18:46Speaker 7: both like the bulk innings. And Charlie Green, our pitching
- 18:50Speaker 7: coach or bullpenk coach, told me go finish the thing,
- 18:54Speaker 7: and I thought he was kidding. And you know, the
- 18:56Speaker 7: ninth ninth inning came around, and uh just just was
- 19:02Speaker 7: once I knew it was me going out there, I
- 19:04Speaker 7: was gonna do everything in my power to you know,
- 19:09Speaker 7: get the last three outs, the hardest three outs of the.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Of the game.
- 19:14Speaker 6: And then what was your what was your second question?
- 19:20Speaker 1: How to feel? Like, like, what was what was the feeling?
- 19:23Speaker 1: Because because you were super close there, like how how
- 19:28Speaker 1: how did it feel? What does it feel like to
- 19:30Speaker 1: go actually flap your catcher's hand and be like, wow,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I just like finished thing. And did you know it
- 19:35Speaker 1: was a safe? Did you know that? I knew?
- 19:39Speaker 6: I knew it was a save opportunity.
- 19:41Speaker 7: And whenever me and contraras you know, gave like a handshake,
- 19:46Speaker 7: it was like a breath of fresh air. You know,
- 19:51Speaker 7: he's great back there. I had Gary the first three
- 19:54Speaker 7: innings of that of that game, and then you know
- 19:58Speaker 7: that's a those are feelings you you really can't make up.
- 20:02Speaker 7: I feel like, so those guys, you know, they worked
- 20:07Speaker 7: hard that whole game and we stayed in it.
- 20:10Speaker 6: So it was fun.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Some wireless plans can get a little bit crazy, a
- 20:16Speaker 3: little bit off the charts. Expensive mint Mobile can get
- 20:20Speaker 3: you started with three months of premium wireless for fifteen
- 20:25Speaker 3: bucks a month is pretty good.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I like that.

- 21:13Speaker 3: question for you when you're going through that, I mean,
- 21:15Speaker 3: you've started plenty so you're stretched out. You can do that,
- 21:19Speaker 3: but how do you balance this kind of schedule and communication?
- 21:25Speaker 3: You want to pitch as much as possible, right, I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 3: even people that.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Are just like playing.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I don't know with their friends, they get hurt or
- 21:33Speaker 3: they are managing a workload and they want to keep
- 21:36Speaker 3: pitching as long as they can. So I guess my
- 21:38Speaker 3: question is, for example, like the other day, you know
- 21:40Speaker 3: MISRASKI pitch pitched well and then you know said, hey,
- 21:43Speaker 3: I'm good, Like this is the last inning I have
- 21:45Speaker 3: in me. So have you had any of that? Have
- 21:48Speaker 3: you experienced any of that before? It doesn't have to
- 21:50Speaker 3: be just recently, but in general. And what is that like?
- 21:54Speaker 3: Just to take our fans behind the scenes. Is it
- 21:56Speaker 3: every inning once you get deeper into an outing, whether
- 21:58Speaker 3: it's a bulk save like this or when you've got
- 22:02Speaker 3: starts that you're racking up where you get to the
- 22:04Speaker 3: fifth or the sixth, the pitch counts getting checked. Like,
- 22:07Speaker 3: just take us inside that as much as possible, like
- 22:08Speaker 3: who you're talking to and and how you need to
- 22:11Speaker 3: try and be honest.
- 22:12Speaker 2: But also you've got adrenaline and you want to keep pitching.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that.
- 22:20Speaker 7: You want to as a starter, like you obviously want
- 22:22Speaker 7: to go as far as you possibly can.
- 22:24Speaker 6: That's what we're built up to do. I think you
- 22:30Speaker 6: know about.
- 22:33Speaker 7: The difference between like now and and like when I
- 22:38Speaker 7: was starting is I'm not thinking about those things as
- 22:42Speaker 7: opposed to when I was starting, I was thinking about
- 22:46Speaker 7: how deep am I going to get into this game
- 22:48Speaker 7: for the boys, you know, whereas now I'm I'm grabbing
- 22:51Speaker 7: the ball and you know, I don't I don't know
- 22:54Speaker 7: how long I'm going to go.
- 22:55Speaker 6: So I take that away from everything I do now.
- 23:01Speaker 7: And as far as like you know, pitch count and
- 23:07Speaker 7: stuff like that, I think like the games transition differently
- 23:13Speaker 7: because in college, I mean I was throwing one hundred
- 23:16Speaker 7: and ten pitches one hundred and fifteen, you know, I
- 23:18Speaker 7: was trying to go out there and pitch the whole
- 23:20Speaker 7: game every time. Whereas I think it's changed in a
- 23:26Speaker 7: way of you know, pitchers are like, I'm at my
- 23:30Speaker 7: you know, ninety ninety pitch mark, I'm probably going to
- 23:32Speaker 7: come out of the game.
- 23:37Speaker 1: That's uh, it's simpler. I think what you're what you're
- 23:41Speaker 1: saying is if we go out of the bullpen, you're like,
- 23:43Speaker 1: give me the ball and we'll figure this thing out
- 23:45Speaker 1: out of the time. I personally love that, but you know,
- 23:47Speaker 1: it's not necessarily for everybody. I did read somewhere that
- 23:50Speaker 1: you were I want to ask you about your number
- 23:52Speaker 1: number thirty nine or it has it's corporate Burns's number
- 23:56Speaker 1: what he was, and you have a very similar profile
- 23:59Speaker 1: and cutter mainly four team after that. You know, I
- 24:03Speaker 1: played against Corburn when he was a rookie. It's probably
- 24:06Speaker 1: pretty infamous now over there. How not great that season went,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and then they figured out that the cutter was probably
- 24:12Speaker 1: the way, not the force team. Uh so, unfortunately it's
- 24:16Speaker 1: another two parter my fault. Have you always been the
- 24:21Speaker 1: just cutter first guy? Were you're that way in college
- 24:23Speaker 1: or was that something you learned when you joined the organization?
- 24:25Speaker 1: And then like how much has watching Corburn Burns like
- 24:30Speaker 1: taught you about how you should be approaching pitch?
- 24:35Speaker 7: So actually I never never even threw a cutter my
- 24:39Speaker 7: whole career up until single A in Hillsboro. We were
- 24:47Speaker 7: when I was with the d VAX. They were teaching
- 24:49Speaker 7: me how to throw a sweeper. It's a sweeper grip,
- 24:53Speaker 7: and I was like, oh, that's pretty cool. You know,
- 24:56Speaker 7: I'm throwing you know, a sweeper. And it wasn't really
- 24:59Speaker 7: like sweeping much. It was more like a like it
- 25:02Speaker 7: is now, It's it's tight and moves, you know, a
- 25:05Speaker 7: certain amount and it has carried to it. So I
- 25:10Speaker 7: got traded or I pitched the whole season in twenty three,
- 25:13Speaker 7: got traded the A's. We had some kind of conversation
- 25:18Speaker 7: about it, and then we kind of like moved on
- 25:20Speaker 7: from it. And then I got traded to the Brewers
- 25:23Speaker 7: and my first bullpen They're like, hey, you know, we
- 25:28Speaker 7: really want you to call this thing a cutter, because
- 25:31Speaker 7: you know it is, it's a cutter. And I was like,
- 25:35Speaker 7: all right, that's fine, Like we can call it a cutter.
- 25:39Speaker 7: And then in twenty four, like it changed the whole
- 25:42Speaker 7: aspect of how I approached hitters. Instead of thinking about,
- 25:46Speaker 7: you know, what a sweeper or slider looks like, I
- 25:48Speaker 7: was thinking about how I can envision, you know, a
- 25:52Speaker 7: cut a cutter. And now I just have you know,
- 25:58Speaker 7: thrown at my whole careers so far up here, and
- 26:02Speaker 7: so yeah, they kind of changed the mindset on it.
- 26:06Speaker 7: And as far as you know, Cortin Burns goes, you know,
- 26:10Speaker 7: he's got a our cutters are different. He throws his
- 26:14Speaker 7: off of like the four scene laces, but just watching
- 26:19Speaker 7: him locate it and throw it anywhere he wants, it's
- 26:23Speaker 7: pretty special.
- 26:25Speaker 1: This is good ball talk.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Well, I'm gonna ask now more basic fan question based
- 26:29Speaker 3: on quotes from your manager, who's a good friend of
- 26:32Speaker 3: the show Pat Murphy when he brings up those lines
- 26:35Speaker 3: every once in a while, but like, oh, you know,
- 26:37Speaker 3: the team and no names, and you know, we just
- 26:39Speaker 3: want some people to maybe.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Know who we are and all of that.
- 26:42Speaker 3: You know, Christian Jelich has been a good player in
- 26:46Speaker 3: the league for a long time. Jackson Chiro is one
- 26:48Speaker 3: of the most exciting young players. Your boy Contreras is
- 26:51Speaker 3: a great young All Star catcher, et cetera. Right, Like,
- 26:53Speaker 3: we can go down the line and come up with
- 26:55Speaker 3: a number of players both on the pitching and position
- 26:58Speaker 3: player side that have made a name for himself.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Do you guys laugh when you see those quotes?
- 27:04Speaker 3: Knowing his style and how he says most things in
- 27:08Speaker 3: jest and often he keeps that same face on, but
- 27:11Speaker 3: then he'll give you a line that's hilarious. So just
- 27:14Speaker 3: specifically for that kind of line, because he dropped it
- 27:16Speaker 3: again recently, Did the guys see it in joke? Like, yeah,
- 27:20Speaker 3: no one knows who we are, Like he's got an MVP.
- 27:23Speaker 3: He was in the All Star Game last year, et cetera.
- 27:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I just I mean it's it's Murph. You know,
- 27:30Speaker 7: he's always going some type of quotes out there. But
- 27:33Speaker 7: I just think, you know, it's more so of like
- 27:37Speaker 7: we're kind of like an overlooked team because we're such
- 27:40Speaker 7: a smaller market in that sense. So as far as
- 27:45Speaker 7: you know, saying that, like no one really knows, you know,
- 27:50Speaker 7: who we are, I just don't think we get the
- 27:53Speaker 7: sort of attention in that way.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair. I mean this weekend's a good example.
- 28:00Speaker 3: The Dodgers certainly get a little bit more attention. They
- 28:02Speaker 3: also happen to have one of the best players of
- 28:04Speaker 3: all time who's an international icon makes like one hundred
- 28:07Speaker 3: million dollars off the field, right, Like that's that's a
- 28:09Speaker 3: factor too, So I know you feel that, right when
- 28:12Speaker 3: you take on a team like the Dodgers, they've got
- 28:15Speaker 3: a lot going for them on the international scene. That's
- 28:17Speaker 3: not really Milwaukee's game right now. It's more of the
- 28:20Speaker 3: local vibe.
- 28:21Speaker 7: Right Yeah, yeah, no, I think you know, you know,
- 28:25Speaker 7: I got to remind me about showing he's got a
- 28:28Speaker 7: pretty far homer off me last year, so I kind
- 28:34Speaker 7: of laughed that one off. They put a plaque up there.
- 28:37Speaker 7: I kind of want to take a picture in front
- 28:39Speaker 7: of it. They didn't say it was OPA, but.
- 28:44Speaker 1: That's right what it is. Yeah, it is.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Hey, what's it like facing him? Like when you're going
- 28:49Speaker 3: up against him?
- 28:50Speaker 2: You know?
- 28:51Speaker 3: I mean, we don't need the full scouting report, obviously,
- 28:53Speaker 3: we hear it all the time on the broadcast and
- 28:55Speaker 3: we read about him constantly, but like, what is it
- 28:58Speaker 3: like facing him? You know, just from from the perspective of, Hey,
- 29:01Speaker 3: you're a pitcher, you're facing a hitter like him. You
- 29:04Speaker 3: know what's unique about the way that he's at the plate.
- 29:12Speaker 7: I don't know what the difference is between him and
- 29:16Speaker 7: everyone else is, but I wasn't you know too, you know,
- 29:22Speaker 7: we'll use the word nervous or anything. I didn't approach
- 29:24Speaker 7: him any differently than I would have any other hitter.
- 29:28Speaker 7: But as far as like, you know, I threw a
- 29:32Speaker 7: pitch in and it just seemed like the ball exploded
- 29:36Speaker 7: off the bat differently.
- 29:38Speaker 1: It was loud.
- 29:39Speaker 7: You know, he's a good player and that's what happens.
- 29:43Speaker 7: So I got nothing. He's just he's different.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a way of put it. When people ask
- 29:53Speaker 4: certain things, you just say, listen, it's different and you
- 29:56Speaker 4: move on. But is there a guy right now that
- 29:59Speaker 4: two our question? Is there a guy that well, I'll
- 30:02Speaker 4: just do one part here, a guy that you when
- 30:04Speaker 4: you face he just seems to have your number right now?
- 30:07Speaker 4: Is there anybody out there in your career as of
- 30:10Speaker 4: right now? Is there a dude that's just like man?
- 30:13Speaker 4: I just can't find a way to get this guy out.
- 30:17Speaker 7: Honestly, I can't think of anybody off the top of
- 30:19Speaker 7: that perfect I think about the guys that I can
- 30:21Speaker 7: get out.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Yeah, right, digmy video? Yeah, you want it on the ver.
- 30:28Speaker 1: So he's also not you know, we can't ask him
- 30:31Speaker 1: who he owns either. He doesn't want to say that stuff.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Wait till you're retired to say that all that juice
- 30:37Speaker 1: yea and ten years.
- 30:38Speaker 3: We can talk about that when you're on the show
- 30:40Speaker 3: and be like, all right, let me run through what
- 30:42Speaker 3: I did here.
- 30:43Speaker 2: On that note, I want to finish with this.
- 30:45Speaker 3: So, Trevor, you were asking about the number, So did
- 30:49Speaker 3: you know that his numbers retired at his college?
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 30:55Speaker 3: So you want to give us the backstory of I
- 30:57Speaker 3: know you mentioned Chad like how you and I think
- 31:00Speaker 3: this part's big too, and you could do an hour
- 31:02Speaker 3: on this, But hey, you were at a school where
- 31:05Speaker 3: they let it eat. You weren't watching, you know, obviously
- 31:07Speaker 3: weren't thrown one hundred and fifty pitches, but you were
- 31:10Speaker 3: able to go deep into outings. Train yourself to be
- 31:12Speaker 3: able to, you know, withstand what you need to do
- 31:15Speaker 3: in the minors and then in the majors to go
- 31:17Speaker 3: deep as possible. Does some of that have to do
- 31:20Speaker 3: with Hey, I'm out of school where I was one
- 31:22Speaker 3: of the if not best player ever at that school,
- 31:25Speaker 3: and they were like, dude, do whatever you got to do,
- 31:27Speaker 3: You're our star.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Uh yeah.
- 31:31Speaker 7: I went to PRETTYE Northwest. It's a small Division two
- 31:35Speaker 7: and ham and Indiana. They were yet my number retired,
- 31:44Speaker 7: you know this this offseason, which was pretty special. That's
- 31:51Speaker 7: just one of those things where you're at a small school.
- 31:55Speaker 7: I lived like forty minutes away, so I commuted to
- 32:03Speaker 7: school and I was able to spend a lot of
- 32:05Speaker 7: time at home, but went and played summer ball in
- 32:09Speaker 7: the Northwoods League. Got recruited by a guy named josh
- 32:14Speaker 7: Reebant to play for Traverse City Pitts Bitters, which is
- 32:19Speaker 7: a great area to go to and spend a summer,
- 32:22Speaker 7: and then the following year got some attention from scouts
- 32:29Speaker 7: and stuff, and every game was you know, filled out,
- 32:32Speaker 7: and you know, just just be coming from a small
- 32:35Speaker 7: school just makes me kind of play with the chip
- 32:37Speaker 7: on my shoulder, like I really have nothing to lose,
- 32:39Speaker 7: but just to have fun here.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 3: Well it's working man. It's been fun to watch. Keep
- 32:45Speaker 3: doing your thing. Really enjoyed the conversation and have fun
- 32:48Speaker 3: this weekend.
- 32:49Speaker 6: Yeah, appreciate it. Thanks for having me on here.
