- 0:59Speaker 2: of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or
- 1:02Speaker 2: computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the
- 1:07Speaker 2: greatest thing since college football traveling trophies. The UC Bearcats
- 1:13Speaker 2: and Miami Redhawks have been playing football since 1888. And
- 1:17Speaker 2: when Cincinnati beat Miami in a comeback thriller on Saturday,
- 1:22Speaker 2: the Cats maintained possession of the victory bell. UC gets
- 1:27Speaker 2: to commemorate the win by painting the year 2026 on
- 1:30Speaker 2: its side of the bell. I love those traveling trophies.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Michigan State and Indiana compete for the Old Brass Spittoon.
- 1:40Speaker 2: TCU and SMU battle for the Iron Skillet. And when
- 1:45Speaker 2: Wisconsin faces Minnesota, the winner gets Paul Bunyan's axe. Those
- 1:50Speaker 2: unique traveling trophies are one of the things that makes
- 1:53Speaker 2: college football special. Time for radio replays from Sunday's dominant
- 1:59Speaker 2: win in Houston. As the old saying goes, everything is
- 2:04Speaker 2: bigger in Texas. Today, the Bengals are gunning for a
- 2:08Speaker 2: gigantic road win in Houston against one of the NFL's
- 2:13Speaker 2: most ferocious defenses. It's the Bengals versus the Houston Texans.
- 2:19Speaker 2: And it is time for the pigskin to fly here
- 2:22Speaker 2: at Reliance Stadium. The Texans feature the NFL's highest-paid defensive
- 2:27Speaker 2: player in Will Anderson at $ 50 million a year. The
- 2:31Speaker 2: pass rusher on the other side, Daniil Hunter, makes $ 40 million.
- 2:35Speaker 2: It's a formidable defense, and the Bengals punted on their
- 2:38Speaker 2: first four possessions. But they didn't fall behind. Houston botched
- 2:44Speaker 2: a short field goal attempt on a mishandled snap in
- 2:46Speaker 2: the second quarter, and later in the quarter, Dexter Lawrence
- 2:50Speaker 2: made a tremendous play on defense. Fourth and inches. Stroud
- 2:56Speaker 2: will hand it off to Montgomery, running wide.
- 2:58Speaker 1: No, no.
- 2:59Speaker 4: By Dexter Lawrence, pulled down by the shoulder pads. Short
- 3:03Speaker 4: of the first down. Sexy Dexy.
- 3:07Speaker 2: The Bengals took over at their own 19, and Joe
- 3:09Speaker 2: Burrow went to work. An 18-yard pass to Tee Higgins
- 3:13Speaker 2: on 3rd-and-8. A 23-yard pass to Tee on 3rd-and-4. It
- 3:18Speaker 2: moved the ball to the Houston.
- 3:20Speaker 1: 32.
- 3:20Speaker 2: 337 left in the half. Shotgun snap. Burrow from the pocket.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Fires deep downfield. Jamar Chase trying to make the catch
- 3:29Speaker 2: near the pylon.
- 3:30Speaker 1: He's got it.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Touchdown.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Bengals.
- 3:34Speaker 4: He was defended by first team all pro Derek Stingley.
- 3:39Speaker 2: They collided near the pylon.
- 3:41Speaker 4: And Chase miraculously made the catch and got both feet down.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Numero uno might be the one person in the world
- 3:49Speaker 2: who who could have made that catch as he contorted
- 3:52Speaker 2: his body to catch the ball, toe-tapped his left foot,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and dragged his right inbounds to give Cincinnati a 7-0 lead.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I asked him about it after the game.
- 4:02Speaker 2: To you, what was the most remarkable thing about that
- 4:05Speaker 2: first touchdown catch? I don't know if it was your balance,
- 4:08Speaker 2: your strength, your footwork.
- 4:10Speaker 3: It was incredible.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I'm actually finding out now that I was about to fall.
- 4:14Speaker 5: So, I mean, I'd probably say just me keeping my
- 4:16Speaker 5: balance and staying up.
- 4:17Speaker 2: A Houston field goal made it 7-3 at the half. Then,
- 4:21Speaker 2: a 51-yarder by Evan McPherson pushed the lead back to
- 4:24Speaker 2: seven early in the third.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Midway through the quarter... the Bengals took control.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Shotgun snap, Burrow under pressure, begins scrambling right, gets away
- 4:33Speaker 2: from a sack, points toward.
- 4:34Speaker 4: The end zone, throws, Jamar Chase makes the catch! Touchdown! Bengals!
- 4:41Speaker 4: Two touchdown catches for Jamar Chase! And the Bengals are
- 4:48Speaker 4: on the verge of going up by 14.
- 4:50Speaker 2: The Bengals had a 17-3 lead. A Houston field goal
- 4:53Speaker 2: made it 17-6, going to the 4th, But early in
- 4:57Speaker 2: the final quarter, Money Mac pushed the lead back to
- 4:59Speaker 2: two touchdowns with his latest bomb. A 58-yard try from
- 5:04Speaker 2: the right hash. Rico puts it down. Here comes the kick.
- 5:08Speaker 2: It is straight as an arrow, and it is good.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Into the net from 58 yards away. And the Bengals
- 5:16Speaker 2: have a 20-6 lead with 12.16 to go. Officially, that
- 5:22Speaker 2: went into the record books as a 57-yarder. McPherson has
- 5:26Speaker 2: made 18 straight field goal tries going back to last year.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Houston never got closer as Cincinnati closed out the win
- 5:35Speaker 2: by sacking C.J. Stroud four times in the final 10 minutes.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Fourth and 17, 19 seconds to go. Stroud in the gun,
- 5:44Speaker 2: in an empty backfield. He catches the snap. He drops back.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The rush coming.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Gets away from Cash's howl, but gets sacked! Cedric Johnson
- 5:54Speaker 4: with the exclamation point with 12 seconds to go.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That was a 20-yard sack.
- 6:01Speaker 2: The final score, Cincinnati 20, Houston 6. The Texans certainly
- 6:06Speaker 2: have one of the NFL's best defenses, but through two games,
- 6:10Speaker 2: so does Cincinnati. The Texans were 5-for-17 on third-down conversions,
- 6:15Speaker 2: 0-for-4 when they went for it on fourth down, and
- 6:19Speaker 2: failed to score a touchdown on three trips into the
- 6:22Speaker 2: red zone.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I spoke to the guy who is leading the way
- 6:25Speaker 3: for the Bengals.
- 6:27Speaker 2: All right, we're inside the locker room with Sexy Dexter.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence after a spectacular performance. Dexter has a ball
- 6:35Speaker 2: in his right hand. I'm guessing that is a game
- 6:37Speaker 2: ball for your performance today. Let's start with a stop
- 6:40Speaker 2: on fourth and two inches. You grabbed David Montgomery. You
- 6:45Speaker 2: stoned him, giving the Bengals the ball. I thought that
- 6:47Speaker 2: was a huge play in the game.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Did you? Oh, for sure.
- 6:51Speaker 6: Um, They didn't go for the field goal, so it's
- 6:55Speaker 6: either they get the first or no points, and we
- 6:58Speaker 6: like the no points situation.
- 7:01Speaker 2: No doubt about it. What can you say about the defense?
- 7:04Speaker 2: You held a very good Houston team. You scored 31
- 7:06Speaker 2: against Buffalo last week to no touchdowns.
- 7:09Speaker 6: I think we just played well together on defense and
- 7:13Speaker 6: then the whole team. We had a lot of drives
- 7:15Speaker 6: where they were backed up inside the 25. So that
- 7:19Speaker 6: was huge. And we knew those type of situations you've
- 7:22Speaker 6: got to take advantage of to give the offense short field.
- 7:25Speaker 6: So you lock in extra and you hone in on
- 7:28Speaker 6: your keys.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Do you feel like you imposed your will today, Dexter?
- 7:33Speaker 6: I think I did. I could be better always, a
- 7:36Speaker 6: couple plays always. But overall, I think I was physical.
- 7:40Speaker 6: I played my game, and I was Dex.
- 7:43Speaker 2: What do you think the NFL is thinking about the Bengals'
- 7:45Speaker 2: defense through two weeks?
- 7:48Speaker 6: When they watch the tape, they're going to see a
- 7:51Speaker 6: group that just plays hard and plays as one and
- 7:55Speaker 6: plays for one another. It's a care on the field
- 7:58Speaker 6: when we're out there.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Four sacks for the second week in a row, and
- 8:01Speaker 2: they are coming from a wide variety of people. Cedric Johnson,
- 8:05Speaker 2: Shamar Stewart at the end of the game. These are
- 8:07Speaker 2: the waves that we heard about, correct? Yep.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I mean, you know, our job is to have everybody
- 8:13Speaker 6: ready to go. You know, BJ was down, our leader
- 8:15Speaker 6: was down, so guys had to step up, and they did.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Is this what you envisioned when you agreed to come
- 8:22Speaker 2: to Cincinnati?
- 8:23Speaker 6: For sure. for sure we have to work and we
- 8:25Speaker 6: still got work to do. You know, they, they got
- 8:28Speaker 6: a lot of, they got a lot of plays on us,
- 8:29Speaker 6: you know, probably from a couple of us, you gotta
- 8:31Speaker 6: watch the tape, but it's, you know, we just gotta,
- 8:34Speaker 6: we gotta keep going. You know, it's, it's, it's not,
- 8:36Speaker 6: this is the floor. The ceiling is high.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It's been a very entertaining floor through two weeks. Congratulations
- 8:44Speaker 2: on a great win.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Offensively.
- 8:47Speaker 2: When Joe Burrow had time, he was terrific. He was
- 8:50Speaker 2: 20 for 31 for 207 yards. with two touchdowns, no picks,
- 8:55Speaker 2: and a passer rating of 105.2. But protecting him against
- 9:00Speaker 2: the Texans' great pass rush duo was a challenge to
- 9:03Speaker 2: say the least. Houston had five sacks and ten quarterback hits.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Dalton Reisner says the Bengals' D-line allowed the team to
- 9:12Speaker 2: overcome a tough day for the O-line.
- 9:16Speaker 7: They won us the football game today. No ifs, ands,
- 9:19Speaker 7: or buts about it. We did some good things, don't
- 9:21Speaker 7: get me wrong. Capitalized when we needed to, but the
- 9:23Speaker 7: defense won the ball game, and that's a testament to
- 9:26Speaker 7: the work that they put in. It's a testament to
- 9:28Speaker 7: Al Golden. It's a testament to Zach Taylor, the emphasis.
- 9:30Speaker 7: It's a testament to upstairs on who they brought in,
- 9:32Speaker 7: and most importantly, it's a testament to the defensive front seven,
- 9:36Speaker 7: the guys in the secondary, the whole defense as a whole.
- 9:38Speaker 7: They put the work in, man.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Beginning with Dexter Lawrence, he got a game ball today.
- 9:42Speaker 1: He imposed his will. He imposed his will.
- 9:45Speaker 7: I can't even tell you how many times I look
- 9:46Speaker 7: up there and saw a guy getting push-pulled or a
- 9:48Speaker 7: guy getting bull-rushed, and It's great to see other grown
- 9:51Speaker 7: men on the other receiving end of that work that
- 9:54Speaker 7: we put in for six weeks in August and July.
- 9:56Speaker 7: This is what football is all about, man. It's the
- 9:59Speaker 7: work paying off. It's the work as a whole from
- 10:02Speaker 7: the top down. Ownership all the way down to us,
- 10:04Speaker 7: to practice, to games, to OTAs, to the draft, to
- 10:08Speaker 7: free agency, you name it, man. It's a testament to
- 10:10Speaker 7: all of us.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Every win is big.
- 10:12Speaker 2: A 14-point road win against that team is a little bigger.
- 10:16Speaker 7: I want to say it's bigger, but 2-0? against the
- 10:20Speaker 7: Houston Texans here at their place on the road, going
- 10:23Speaker 7: on the road next week to play a divisional game.
- 10:25Speaker 7: What a great opportunity. But, Dan, you know better than
- 10:28Speaker 7: anyone else, man. You've got to continue to capitalize. You've
- 10:30Speaker 7: got to take it week by week. Two wins means nothing.
- 10:32Speaker 7: Last time I checked, you've got to have at least
- 10:33Speaker 7: ten to get in the playoffs. So at least eight
- 10:36Speaker 7: more to go, but let's just keep winning and focus
- 10:38Speaker 7: on one day at a time.
- 10:41Speaker 2: For the second straight year, the Bengals are off to
- 10:43Speaker 2: a 2-0 start. And unlike last year, they didn't lose
- 10:46Speaker 2: their quarterback in week two. I talked to Zach Taylor
- 10:50Speaker 2: after the game. What an incredible performance by your defense.
- 10:55Speaker 2: We saw it in training camp. We certainly saw it
- 10:57Speaker 2: in week one, but this was remarkable.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it was great.
- 11:00Speaker 8: You know, they made a ton of plays for us,
- 11:01Speaker 8: helped stop the run. When you got a lead, able
- 11:04Speaker 8: to rush the passer, close out with sacks, hit the quarterback,
- 11:07Speaker 8: make him fluster the whole game. I was really pleased
- 11:11Speaker 8: with the defense. I thought that seems a great job
- 11:13Speaker 8: with the field position, too. You know, Rico did a
- 11:15Speaker 8: great job pinning him inside the 20 and the 10,
- 11:17Speaker 8: and I just thought it was a great all-around game
- 11:19Speaker 8: by those guys.
- 11:20Speaker 3: What did you think of Jamar's first touchdown catch?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Outstanding. That's just a one-on-one.
- 11:26Speaker 8: T traditionally has run that play for us in the past.
- 11:29Speaker 8: We put Jamar over there on this one going against
- 11:32Speaker 8: his old college teammate.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I'm sure that one felt good for him.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Is that performance by Dexter Lawrence exactly what you envisioned
- 11:39Speaker 2: when the Bengals traded for him?
- 11:40Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 11:40Speaker 8: Because so many times when I'm watching, you just see
- 11:42Speaker 8: the center and the guard getting pushed in the backfield.
- 11:44Speaker 8: There's not a stat that's showing up on the sheet,
- 11:46Speaker 8: but That's how he picks the game. You look at
- 11:48Speaker 8: the fourth and one, the stop he had on fourth
- 11:51Speaker 8: and one, the field goal, I'm not so sure he
- 11:53Speaker 8: maybe didn't affect the snap on the field goal based
- 11:55Speaker 8: on his alignment and the block they were going to
- 11:56Speaker 8: have to make.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So that's what you want.
- 11:59Speaker 2: It's a challenging team to pass, protect against, and obviously
- 12:02Speaker 2: they got to Joe a few times. But by and large,
- 12:06Speaker 2: you were able to be successful in the passing game.
- 12:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, they got almost 80 million up front
- 12:11Speaker 8: with those defensive ends, and it shows.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But I thought our guys responded really well.
- 12:15Speaker 8: We didn't win every matchup, but the guys came back
- 12:18Speaker 8: the next play, found ways to put together some drives
- 12:21Speaker 8: that could get points on the board, and that's all
- 12:23Speaker 8: we needed today.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Field goals, touchdowns, didn't matter.
- 12:26Speaker 8: Controlled the clock in the second half with the run game,
- 12:28Speaker 8: and so I was really pleased with that.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I know coaches don't like to talk about statement wins
- 12:33Speaker 2: and things like that, especially in week two of a season,
- 12:36Speaker 2: but a 14-point road win in Houston, how significant is
- 12:40Speaker 2: that for your team?
- 12:41Speaker 1: It feels really good.
- 12:42Speaker 8: You know, we've waited a long time for this type
- 12:44Speaker 8: of game from this team, and we got it. And
- 12:46Speaker 8: now it's just early in the season. This is just
- 12:47Speaker 8: two games, so now we've got to go do it again.
- 12:49Speaker 8: We've got a really tough game next week on the road,
- 12:51Speaker 8: and I look forward to these guys putting in the
- 12:53Speaker 8: work this week and being ready to go to Pittsburgh.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So the Steelers are up next.
- 12:58Speaker 2: They're 1-1 after losing to New England on Sunday, 20-3.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Cincinnati opens as a one-and-a-half point favorite. The Ravens and
- 13:06Speaker 2: Browns are also 1-1. The Saints upset the Ravens in Baltimore, 24-17,
- 13:13Speaker 2: and Cleveland stunned the Bucs in Tampa Bay, 23-19, as
- 13:18Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson outplayed Baker Mayfield on his home turf. So
- 13:23Speaker 2: much for the Baker Mayfield revenge game. Now, time for
- 13:27Speaker 2: post-game analysis from former NFL quarterback Tony Pike. Tony Pike,
- 13:32Speaker 2: we heard so many times in the offseason, if the Bengals'
- 13:36Speaker 2: defense can just be average, then Cincinnati has a chance
- 13:40Speaker 2: to be a contender. This defense doesn't look average. It
- 13:43Speaker 2: looks elite through two games. Yeah, I mean, you come on.
- 13:46Speaker 9: The road against a team with their backs against the
- 13:49Speaker 9: wall already in the Houston Texans after losing week one.
- 13:53Speaker 9: And you go into the game, if you're coming out
- 13:54Speaker 9: saying you had 267 yards of offense and 12 penalties,
- 13:57Speaker 9: you probably don't think the game ended up well. It's
- 14:00Speaker 9: completely flipped the script with what this defense is able
- 14:03Speaker 9: to do, in particular up front. They're just disrupting a
- 14:07Speaker 9: team's running game. So you don't have balance because you're
- 14:09Speaker 9: taking away the run. And then you're getting after the passer.
- 14:12Speaker 9: And even if you're not getting home with sacks, you're
- 14:15Speaker 9: impacting his footwork. You're impacting his follow through, his finish,
- 14:19Speaker 9: where he wants to throw the ball from. He's got
- 14:21Speaker 9: to move in the pocket. They just don't allow teams
- 14:24Speaker 9: to get comfortable, and I like the most when they
- 14:26Speaker 9: get pushback. When they do give up a play, they respond.
- 14:30Speaker 9: They answer right back. They bring up pressure.
- 14:32Speaker 1: They get home.
- 14:34Speaker 9: It's so fun to watch all 11 play. The linebackers
- 14:37Speaker 9: are flying around. The corners and the secondary are feeding
- 14:40Speaker 9: off the front because they're getting home quicker.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It's beautiful to watch.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Dexter Lawrence was phenomenal, and a huge play came early
- 14:48Speaker 2: in the game.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Fourth and two inches. They put up on the scoreboard
- 14:51Speaker 3: two inches.
- 14:52Speaker 2: After the virtual measurement, and he just reaches out with
- 14:55Speaker 2: his right paw, grabs a really hard guy to bring
- 14:58Speaker 2: down in David Montgomery, and stops that drive to keep
- 15:02Speaker 2: points off the board.
- 15:03Speaker 9: One, most teams would try to sneak that. Are you
- 15:05Speaker 9: going to try to sneak it right up to where
- 15:07Speaker 9: Dexter Lawrence is lined up?
- 15:08Speaker 2: No.
- 15:09Speaker 9: It's so good that he's able to be recognized for
- 15:13Speaker 9: his greatness because on that play you see it. He
- 15:15Speaker 9: beats a double team. He doesn't allow an inch. you
- 15:19Speaker 9: get the ball back to the offense. But more times
- 15:21Speaker 9: than not, he's doing the dirty work. He is making
- 15:24Speaker 9: a running back shift or making a running back cut
- 15:27Speaker 9: when they don't want to cut or moving the quarterback
- 15:29Speaker 9: or getting the ball out quick, and he doesn't get.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The stats for that.
- 15:32Speaker 9: His impact is literally every single time he's on the
- 15:35Speaker 9: field because he requires two, sometimes even three defenders, and
- 15:39Speaker 9: that opens up the rest of this defense as well.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I haven't looked at defensive stats, but it occurs to
- 15:44Speaker 2: me as we chat, that I think I called out
- 15:47Speaker 2: the name of pretty much every defensive lineman that they have,
- 15:51Speaker 2: whether it was a tackle, a pressure, a sack, a deflection.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I mean, right down to the end of the game,
- 15:57Speaker 2: Shamar Stewart and Cedric Johnson on the last two snaps.
- 16:00Speaker 9: Yeah, I thought Cedric Johnson played great. Not only the sack,
- 16:02Speaker 9: he set the edge on a lot of those runs
- 16:05Speaker 9: to allow the linebackers to fill. Chris Jenkins, as you mentioned,
- 16:09Speaker 9: another good day. Shamar Stewart flashes and gets a sack.
- 16:12Speaker 9: Boye Mafe flying around the field. I thought it was
- 16:15Speaker 9: easily Cassius Howell's best performance that we've seen up to
- 16:19Speaker 9: this point. They just feed off each other. They did
- 16:21Speaker 9: it today without B.J.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Hill.
- 16:23Speaker 9: They come at you in waves, but what I like most,
- 16:25Speaker 9: no one is about the individual statistics. They know that
- 16:28Speaker 9: if they do their job, either they or someone else
- 16:31Speaker 9: on the defense are going to make the play, and
- 16:33Speaker 9: you see that throughout the course of a game.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Cassius Howell gets quick wins as a pass rusher. As
- 16:40Speaker 2: a quarterback, going back to your quarterback days, What's it
- 16:43Speaker 2: do to you when you see that guy has his
- 16:46Speaker 2: man beat lickety split?
- 16:48Speaker 9: Immediately your eyes shift to that instead of reading what's
- 16:51Speaker 9: happening downfield. So already I lose my sight lines. I
- 16:55Speaker 9: lose my spot in the pocket. And you saw it
- 16:57Speaker 9: today multiple times. It affects the tackles as well. Tackles
- 17:00Speaker 9: are starting early. They're getting hit with false starts because
- 17:03Speaker 9: they're trying to get started to stop that. But what's
- 17:06Speaker 9: so impressive early about Cassius Howe We heard about the speed,
- 17:10Speaker 9: the speed, the speed. He's got an array of moves.
- 17:12Speaker 9: He's got a spin move that he uses. And when
- 17:14Speaker 9: he needs to, he'll bull rush. He's fast enough to
- 17:17Speaker 9: go around, but he's also quick enough to use that
- 17:21Speaker 9: speed and spin and then the power to finish.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It's very rare in a rookie.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Will Anderson makes $ 50 million a year. He's the highest
- 17:29Speaker 2: paid non-quarterback in the NFL. The guy on the opposite side,
- 17:33Speaker 2: Daniil Hunter, makes $ 40 million a year. He had 17
- 17:36Speaker 2: sacks last year. You're going to have a hard time
- 17:38Speaker 2: pitching a shout-out against those guys, but how should we
- 17:41Speaker 2: feel about the Bengals' offensive line after today's game?
- 17:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:46Speaker 9: You know, you're not going to go up against a
- 17:47Speaker 9: better duo all year. When it's one, you can kind
- 17:51Speaker 9: of scheme around that. You can chip. You can help.
- 17:53Speaker 9: It's hard to help on both sides every time you
- 17:55Speaker 9: drop back to pass. You kind of live with it.
- 17:59Speaker 9: I thought the Bengals helped themselves in the running game today.
- 18:01Speaker 9: I thought a very undervalued Chase Brown, just under five
- 18:04Speaker 9: yards a carry, was big. for this team just to
- 18:07Speaker 9: keep them honest in a sense, but it's hard to
- 18:10Speaker 9: game plan around. I think it's good because you get
- 18:13Speaker 9: a win. You also get a lot of learning reps
- 18:16Speaker 9: on the offensive line. They'll bounce back from it, but
- 18:18Speaker 9: they were able to make enough plays to secure the
- 18:21Speaker 9: points necessary to get a win.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Maybe the most lopsided win today was Bengals special teams.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Multiple misses in the field goal game for Houston. And
- 18:30Speaker 2: Money Mac remains perfect going back to the Chicago game
- 18:33Speaker 2: of last year.
- 18:33Speaker 9: I feel like so many times the Bengals are starting
- 18:35Speaker 9: on the 40 or better and the Texans inside their
- 18:38Speaker 9: own 20. It changes that hidden yardage. And when you
- 18:42Speaker 9: have a defense that's forcing three and outs like the
- 18:44Speaker 9: Bengals were, you're constantly just gaining five yards, ten yards
- 18:48Speaker 9: of field position. And Evan McPherson, man, he changes your
- 18:53Speaker 9: thought process from a quarterback or from a play caller
- 18:56Speaker 9: because you're essentially guaranteeing your points to when you get
- 18:59Speaker 9: inside the 40-yard line. You don't have to force a
- 19:01Speaker 9: throw on third and long. You can take a check down.
- 19:04Speaker 9: You can throw the ball away to live to see
- 19:06Speaker 9: another play because you feel so good about.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Yourself getting points. The Bengals are 2-0. They just beat
- 19:12Speaker 2: Houston by 14 in the Texans' home. They're going to
- 19:15Speaker 2: be hearing a lot of praise. The Bengals are this week.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Every national show will be singing their praises and talking
- 19:22Speaker 2: about the defense. I feel like the Bengals have the
- 19:24Speaker 2: veteran leadership to be able to handle all the compliments
- 19:28Speaker 2: that they're about to receive.
- 19:30Speaker 9: Yeah, their locker room and their culture is incredible. They've
- 19:32Speaker 9: got such a good mix of veteran players along with
- 19:36Speaker 9: young players who aren't full of themselves but wanting to
- 19:39Speaker 9: learn and learn how to be on and off the field,
- 19:42Speaker 9: a professional in the National Football League. They've got a
- 19:44Speaker 9: good mix of that. But again, they're 2-0, and you
- 19:48Speaker 9: can find things, especially on the offensive side, of the ball,
- 19:50Speaker 9: that you want to improve on, which keeps you grounded,
- 19:53Speaker 9: which keeps you getting back to work. And that's the
- 19:55Speaker 9: exciting part about this team right now. They're not hitting
- 19:59Speaker 9: on every single cylinder. They're not playing their A game,
- 20:02Speaker 9: and they're still 2-0. They just beat a team that
- 20:04Speaker 9: was one of the only two going into the season
- 20:06Speaker 9: that they were favored to be underdogs against. So I
- 20:10Speaker 9: think all that bodes really well. A lot of teaching points.
- 20:12Speaker 9: I know, by the way, on the offense, you still
- 20:14Speaker 9: got number nine, number one, and number five.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And as we learned once again today, whenever there is
- 20:19Speaker 2: single coverage on Jamar, no matter who is covering him,
- 20:23Speaker 2: you could take Deion Sanders in his prime, throw him
- 20:26Speaker 2: the ball, and there's a pretty good chance he's going
- 20:27Speaker 2: to find a way to come down with it.
- 20:29Speaker 9: It's a risk on defense any time you don't double him.
- 20:32Speaker 9: And when you don't, you're going to pay for it.
- 20:34Speaker 9: We saw that. It honestly was one of the greatest
- 20:37Speaker 9: catches I've seen because he's losing his balance. He's falling
- 20:41Speaker 9: towards the sideline, still able to locate the ball, catch
- 20:45Speaker 9: the ball as he's turning and get two feet inbounds.
- 20:48Speaker 1: It's not human.
- 20:50Speaker 9: It's simply you don't see that. And you see him
- 20:53Speaker 9: get the chance. He rewards Joe. And then Joe Burrow
- 20:56Speaker 9: shows his greatness later in the game by scrambling to
- 20:59Speaker 9: out of the pocket after chase brown helps with another
- 21:01Speaker 9: chip and uh and then finds jamar on a scramble
- 21:05Speaker 9: drill it's it's so fun to watch them play you
- 21:07Speaker 9: see t higgins make chunk plays all over the field
- 21:10Speaker 9: it's it's the pieces are there they're they're going to
- 21:14Speaker 9: get more fluid on offense but it's easier to go
- 21:18Speaker 9: about that when you're already two and oh.
- 21:20Speaker 3: We had a fun weekend i'll.
- 21:22Speaker 9: Tell you what i I have to calm myself down
- 21:26Speaker 9: because I'm like, these are fantastic. We saw a 21-point
- 21:30Speaker 9: halftime comeback where they win in the last two minutes
- 21:32Speaker 9: for the Victory Bell, the 129th edition. Then you and
- 21:36Speaker 9: I get to travel separately. We take a drive to Indy,
- 21:39Speaker 9: fly down here to Houston, and we see one of
- 21:42Speaker 9: the most businesslike wins that I've seen in quite some
- 21:46Speaker 9: time for the Bengals. Again, against a team in Houston,
- 21:48Speaker 9: coming into the year, Super Bowl aspirations. And rightfully so.
- 21:52Speaker 9: They put up 31 against Buffalo. That defense that we
- 21:54Speaker 9: saw is as good as you'll see. And for the Bengals,
- 21:58Speaker 9: you've also given yourself an extra game of cushion. The
- 22:02Speaker 9: goal is the Super Bowl, and the goal is a
- 22:04Speaker 9: one seed. You did some good stuff today by widening
- 22:08Speaker 9: that margin between you and the Houston Texans.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Including the preseason, Tony has been part of our broadcast
- 22:14Speaker 2: crew for five games, and the Bengals have won all five.
- 22:19Speaker 2: The Bengals Booth Podcast is brought to you by Paycor,
- 22:21Speaker 2: proud to be the Bengals' official HR software provider. By AltaFiber,

- 22:36Speaker 2: official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Cincinnati's most expensive free
- 22:41Speaker 2: agent acquisition this offseason was Boye Mafe, who got a three-year,
- 22:46Speaker 2: $ 60 million deal from coming off a Super Bowl winning
- 22:50Speaker 2: season in Seattle. In this week's Fun Facts segment, we
- 22:53Speaker 2: meet the person under the pads. We're visiting with Boye Mafe.
- 22:58Speaker 2: You were part of a Super Bowl champion last year
- 23:00Speaker 2: with Seattle. What's it like to lift and kiss the
- 23:05Speaker 2: Lombardi trophy?
- 23:06Speaker 5: It's one of those moments that you kind of get
- 23:09Speaker 5: to when you feel like it's the pinnacle of football.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You feel one of those moments, but it's something that.
- 23:14Speaker 5: You're always going to chase and you always want to
- 23:16Speaker 5: keep doing it once you get a taste of it.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Definitely keep doing that.
- 23:19Speaker 2: We hope you get another taste in February of this year.
- 23:22Speaker 2: The Seahawks were featured on Hard Knocks this year. And
- 23:26Speaker 2: on the first episode, we saw footage of how you
- 23:29Speaker 2: got your championship ring for people that did not see
- 23:32Speaker 2: the show. Can you explain what that was all about?
- 23:35Speaker 2: Because it was unbelievably cool as a viewer.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it was honestly very interesting.
- 23:41Speaker 5: They kind of told everyone to sit down and we're
- 23:44Speaker 5: sitting there and All of a sudden they said, three, two, one.
- 23:48Speaker 5: And then we were just like, okay, nothing happened. So
- 23:50Speaker 5: we're looking at our tables and everyone's looking around like,
- 23:53Speaker 5: what's going on? And then everyone said, look up. And
- 23:56Speaker 5: then as you can see in the video, the rings
- 23:58Speaker 5: are coming down from the ceiling and they bottom down
- 24:01Speaker 5: in the lights.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it was remarkable. The ring is gigantic. I believe
- 24:06Speaker 2: it's the largest championship ring that's ever been made in sports.
- 24:09Speaker 2: I read that you held a youth football camp this
- 24:12Speaker 2: summer and let the little kids put on your ring,
- 24:16Speaker 2: which had to be incredible for them.
- 24:17Speaker 3: How much fun was that for you?
- 24:19Speaker 1: I meant the world to me.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Obviously, being from Minnesota, my hometown, I wanted to go
- 24:23Speaker 5: back and give them a chance to see that it
- 24:25Speaker 5: is possible. A kid from Minnesota made his dreams come
- 24:28Speaker 5: true and made it to the NFL, so You know,
- 24:30Speaker 5: giving that opportunity for them to get up and close
- 24:32Speaker 5: and personal with somebody that showing them that it is possibilities.
- 24:36Speaker 5: And as a child in Minnesota, you know, there's always
- 24:39Speaker 5: sports and everything. So having that in the back of
- 24:41Speaker 5: the mind, like, okay, I can do this too. And
- 24:43Speaker 5: giving them an opportunity felt amazing.
- 24:45Speaker 2: As the old saying goes, you never get a second
- 24:48Speaker 2: chance to make a first impression. You made a great
- 24:50Speaker 2: first impression on Bengals fans with a strip sack and
- 24:54Speaker 2: a fumble recovery in your first game. Was it important
- 24:57Speaker 2: to you to try to make a good first impression?
- 25:00Speaker 5: I mean, yeah, of course you want to make a
- 25:02Speaker 5: good impression the first time you get to play in
- 25:03Speaker 5: front of new fans. But I feel like the biggest
- 25:05Speaker 5: thing I wanted to do out there was just to
- 25:07Speaker 5: show who I am and kind of just play in
- 25:10Speaker 5: that stature, really just keep everybody alive and be that
- 25:13Speaker 5: guy that, you know, kind of energy and give that
- 25:15Speaker 5: for the guys, give that for the team.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Let's start with your fumble recovery. So this is the
- 25:20Speaker 2: classic strongman wins at the bottom of the pile. Is
- 25:24Speaker 2: there a secret to coming away with the ball in
- 25:26Speaker 2: those situations?
- 25:28Speaker 1: I mean.
- 25:29Speaker 5: Once you have your hands on it, you've got to
- 25:31Speaker 5: cover it up as much as possible and make sure
- 25:32Speaker 5: nobody can get around it and just wait for the
- 25:34Speaker 5: refs to take care of the rest of it.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Then there's the strip sack.
- 25:39Speaker 2: I don't know how many times you get the opportunity
- 25:41Speaker 2: to sneak up behind a quarterback that doesn't know you're coming.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Maybe once or twice a year if you're lucky. Is
- 25:48Speaker 2: that like the greatest feeling an.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Edge rusher can have? 100%.
- 25:51Speaker 5: I feel like in that position, like you said, he
- 25:54Speaker 5: doesn't know you're coming. So you have the opportunity to
- 25:56Speaker 5: make your best attempt at the ball, you know, and
- 25:58Speaker 5: if you can come away with it, it's amazing. If
- 25:59Speaker 5: you can't, it's one of those moments where you look
- 26:02Speaker 5: back and like, dang, only if I only.
- 26:04Speaker 3: You've discussed pass rushing as an art form. In what ways?
- 26:09Speaker 1: I feel like it's, in the game of football, everyone
- 26:12Speaker 1: has their art forms.
- 26:12Speaker 5: You know, wide receivers have their routes and how they
- 26:15Speaker 5: run the routes, how they read the coverages, how they
- 26:17Speaker 5: see the DBs. And same with how, I think we're
- 26:20Speaker 5: kind of similar in that standpoint as when we see
- 26:22Speaker 5: an alignment, we're doing.
- 26:23Speaker 1: The same thing.
- 26:24Speaker 5: We're our route is our path to the quarterback and
- 26:27Speaker 5: their routes are to get open. So our mindset is
- 26:30Speaker 5: how do we get to the quarterback as fast as possible?
- 26:32Speaker 5: And I look at it, our form of, as you're rushing,
- 26:35Speaker 5: once you get to alignment, once you get engaged, that
- 26:37Speaker 5: start form in it, making sure it's as smooth and
- 26:40Speaker 5: as quickly as you can.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Let's discuss your background a little bit. Your folks are
- 26:44Speaker 2: from Nigeria. They came to the U S in their twenties,
- 26:47Speaker 2: they settled in Minnesota. So that's where you grew up,
- 26:50Speaker 2: but you went to boarding school for a year in
- 26:52Speaker 2: Nigeria and, when you were 13 years old. At that age,
- 26:55Speaker 2: were you hesitant?
- 26:56Speaker 1: A little bit.
- 26:57Speaker 5: You know, at 13 years old, your parents would tell
- 26:59Speaker 5: you to go to another country for school.
- 27:01Speaker 1: You're a little, whoa, what's going on?
- 27:02Speaker 5: But as I look back and as the year progressed
- 27:05Speaker 5: and being there, honesty is one of the greatest parts
- 27:08Speaker 5: for me. It was just being embraced in the culture.
- 27:11Speaker 5: My parents grew up in understanding that this is what
- 27:13Speaker 5: it was like for my parents growing up in Nigeria.
- 27:15Speaker 5: And I fell in love with it, honestly.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And as today is, I try to go back as
- 27:19Speaker 1: much as possible.
- 27:20Speaker 2: You had a crazy growth spurt that year. What did
- 27:23Speaker 2: people think when you came home?
- 27:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was kind of funny.
- 27:26Speaker 5: You know, I left shorter, one of the shorter people
- 27:31Speaker 5: in my family, and I came back the tallest. So
- 27:34Speaker 5: I think it was a bit of a shock. You know,
- 27:36Speaker 5: when I first walked in, my brother was like, what?
- 27:38Speaker 5: And then, you know, because as I left, I.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Was shorter than him. And then I came back, I
- 27:42Speaker 1: was already taller.
- 27:43Speaker 3: So it was like five inches in a year.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Five, six inches in a year, yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 3: So I don't know too.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Many defensive ends who ran the 100, did the high jump,
- 27:51Speaker 2: some of the things you did in track when you
- 27:53Speaker 2: were young.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Did you love track?
- 27:55Speaker 1: I did. It was one of my second loves, honestly.
- 27:59Speaker 5: I feel like, honestly, if I didn't go to college
- 28:01Speaker 5: for football, I probably wouldn't have went for track, and
- 28:03Speaker 5: that would have been one of the sports I did.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Wow.
- 28:06Speaker 2: When you signed with the Bengals in March, you spoke
- 28:08Speaker 2: eloquently about your father's impact on your life. In sports,
- 28:13Speaker 2: we often hear the expression, lead by example it sounds
- 28:16Speaker 2: like that's what he did for.
- 28:18Speaker 5: You yeah 100 you know growing up it's one of
- 28:21Speaker 5: those things i'd always see him every day you know
- 28:24Speaker 5: i wake up for school at what 7 7 15
- 28:26Speaker 5: and he's already put in the office for an hour
- 28:28Speaker 5: and his office was in our house in the lower
- 28:30Speaker 5: part of the house and every day i'd walk out
- 28:32Speaker 5: he's already punching away at numbers already doing something on
- 28:35Speaker 5: the computer so just being able to see that and
- 28:38Speaker 5: the thing was like watching him do those things he
- 28:40Speaker 5: never once tried to show it in our face he
- 28:42Speaker 5: never tried to like I'm working so hard for you guys.
- 28:45Speaker 5: He never did any of that. He just kind of
- 28:47Speaker 5: did it in the quiet. And I try to live
- 28:49Speaker 5: by that example of you just got to work and
- 28:51Speaker 5: let the people follow.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Sadly, you lost your mom when you were a freshman
- 28:55Speaker 2: in college due to cancer. You salute her before every
- 28:59Speaker 2: game and after every sack. And you do it with
- 29:01Speaker 2: sign language. Explain how that came about.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Well, I took sign language in high school and learned
- 29:09Speaker 5: it for about two, three years in high school. And
- 29:11Speaker 5: my siblings took sign language. My brother and my sister did, too. So, honestly, like,
- 29:15Speaker 5: we would sign to each other every now and then.
- 29:17Speaker 5: I remember a couple times when I'm in college, if
- 29:19Speaker 5: I'm on the field and my sister sees me get
- 29:21Speaker 5: banged up, she'll ask me, are you okay, and sign
- 29:23Speaker 5: it to me because obviously we can't talk. But I
- 29:26Speaker 5: wanted to find a way to honor her. And in
- 29:28Speaker 5: my own way, you know, before every game, I find
- 29:30Speaker 5: a spot in the corner probably, and I just have
- 29:33Speaker 5: a conversation with my mom, and I tell her I
- 29:36Speaker 5: love you in sign language just to let her know
- 29:37Speaker 5: that I appreciate her and I think about her.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Her every day.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Your first name is Adaboye, correct? I've read that that's
- 29:45Speaker 2: translated to king of dignity. You strike me as a
- 29:48Speaker 2: very dignified person. Do you try to live up to
- 29:51Speaker 2: that name?
- 29:52Speaker 1: For sure.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I'm named after my grandfather so obviously it's held in
- 29:57Speaker 5: high regards and For me, it's one of those things
- 29:59Speaker 5: I try to live my life in a way where,
- 30:01Speaker 5: you know, you've got to have your word is your value.
- 30:04Speaker 5: And to who you are and how you carry yourself
- 30:07Speaker 5: means a lot, and to have the dignity and have
- 30:10Speaker 5: quote-unquote principles about you.
- 30:11Speaker 1: And if you can keep those principles about you, it
- 30:14Speaker 1: stands to who you are.
- 30:15Speaker 5: It's never how much of what quote-unquote money you have
- 30:18Speaker 5: or status of a person you are.
- 30:20Speaker 1: It's about your dignity at the end of the day.
- 30:22Speaker 2: In free agency in the draft, the Bengals try to
- 30:24Speaker 2: find players who love football who aren't in it just
- 30:27Speaker 2: for the rewards that come with playing professional sports but
- 30:30Speaker 2: they truly love the game what do you love about
- 30:33Speaker 2: the game.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Uh i just love the to me it's football it's
- 30:36Speaker 5: done a lot in my life uh from friendships relationships
- 30:39Speaker 5: the people i've met and it's taught me so much
- 30:42Speaker 5: that you know it's like i've always been taught from
- 30:44Speaker 5: a young age when my coaches in college means he
- 30:46Speaker 5: told me that what you give to the game the
- 30:48Speaker 5: game will get back to you and you can't go
- 30:51Speaker 5: out there and dishonor it. You know, you have to
- 30:53Speaker 5: go play the game the right way. And, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 5: one of those things is, is just putting the time
- 30:57Speaker 5: and effort and the work into it. And on top
- 30:59Speaker 5: of that, just, I think football is one of those
- 31:01Speaker 5: rare sports where doing the small things show up in
- 31:05Speaker 5: the biggest ways. And I feel like people forget about
- 31:07Speaker 5: that because obviously you guys see it on Sunday, you
- 31:10Speaker 5: see the plays, you see everything, but you don't see
- 31:12Speaker 5: the Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Thursdays of working on small things,
- 31:16Speaker 5: your craft working on, making sure my footing is right,
- 31:19Speaker 5: making sure my steps are right, making sure my hands
- 31:21Speaker 5: are in good placement.
- 31:22Speaker 1: But on Sundays, you see the final product of it.
- 31:24Speaker 5: And I think that the fact that football has that
- 31:27Speaker 5: is beautiful in the standpoint. And other sports have that
- 31:30Speaker 5: in other ways, but football is very prevalent. And it's
- 31:33Speaker 5: one of those sports you can't win by yourself. You
- 31:36Speaker 5: need all 11. And I feel like having that unison
- 31:39Speaker 5: and when you have the community around you and you
- 31:41Speaker 5: create that brotherhood around you, it really makes that you're
- 31:44Speaker 5: doing it on a mission.
- 31:45Speaker 2: On your Instagram feed, there's a picture of you surrounded
- 31:49Speaker 2: by hot air balloons.
- 31:51Speaker 3: It looks like it could be a poster. Where was that,
- 31:54Speaker 3: and did you actually get on one?
- 31:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that was in Mexico City.
- 31:59Speaker 5: One thing I like to do in my off season
- 32:00Speaker 5: is travel, and I'm a bit of a foodie, so
- 32:03Speaker 5: I've heard so much good things about the food in
- 32:05Speaker 5: Mexico City, so I said, why not go?
- 32:07Speaker 1: And I did, and it lived up to the hype.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Where is your favorite place you've traveled to?
- 32:13Speaker 1: A couple places. I love Brazil. I'm a big fan
- 32:18Speaker 1: of Belize. It's very quiet, very small.
- 32:21Speaker 5: Honestly, for me, any time I have a chance to
- 32:23Speaker 5: understand a new culture, see a new scenery, and just
- 32:27Speaker 5: to really embrace myself into that type of world, really,
- 32:30Speaker 5: for me, it does a lot.
- 32:32Speaker 3: You're the youngest of six kids.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Are you still the little brother in the minds of
- 32:37Speaker 2: your five older siblings?
- 32:39Speaker 1: Of course.
- 32:40Speaker 5: I mean, to this day, I'm always the little brother.
- 32:42Speaker 5: I mean, at the end of the day, my voice
- 32:43Speaker 5: is the quietest one in the room. When it comes
- 32:45Speaker 5: to making family plans and doing things around the house,
- 32:48Speaker 5: I'm definitely still the little brother.
- 32:50Speaker 3: What's your favorite activity off the field?
- 32:52Speaker 5: Off the field, honestly, I'm an outdoorsy person. I like
- 32:55Speaker 5: to fish. I like to eat food. Honestly, try new cuisines,
- 32:59Speaker 5: even try to make some new cuisines. And I feel like,
- 33:02Speaker 5: for me, those are things that bring peace and a
- 33:04Speaker 5: little bit of quiet to my, you know, obviously with
- 33:06Speaker 5: the hecticness of football and the scheduling and everything. So,
- 33:09Speaker 5: I try to find ways to quiet that down a
- 33:11Speaker 5: little bit outside of here.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Final fun fact for Boye Mafe, this one's kind of deep.
- 33:16Speaker 2: If you could meet anybody in history, living or deceased,
- 33:20Speaker 2: who would that person be? Wow.
- 33:22Speaker 5: I'd say, safe bet, I'd probably say my grandfather. He
- 33:25Speaker 5: died two years before I was born, and I hear
- 33:28Speaker 5: so many stories about him. Just to be able to
- 33:30Speaker 5: have a conversation and really see and.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Spend some time with him would be nice.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Appreciate your time. Thank you.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Appreciate you. Thank you.
