A historic downtown Grand Rapids church, dating back to 1894 and once home to the All Souls Universalist Church before becoming Seventh-Day Adventist, was engulfed in flames Wednesday night. Firefighters battled a rapidly spreading blaze that erupted from the basement, forcing them to battle through hidden spaces and drawing in crews from across the city — even off-duty firefighters — as the fire raged into Thursday morning.
