Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Vincent Mecavinni joins us from the UK. Vincent, good morning,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Good morning, so secure Stammager sours away from meeting with
- 0:07Speaker 1: President Trump.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yes, that's right. He is the second European leader to
- 0:12Speaker 2: visit the White House this week. He was pipped by
- 0:14Speaker 2: President Macron on Monday. He had been hoping for this
- 0:18Speaker 2: invite a little earlier because he has built quite a
- 0:21Speaker 2: good relationship with Donald Trump, meeting him last year several
- 0:24Speaker 2: times ahead of the election in anticipation of his victory.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Now he is going, or we understand, to tell the
- 0:31Speaker 2: United States that they must put security guarantees in place
- 0:35Speaker 2: in whatever deal they are going to strike with Russia.
- 0:38Speaker 2: They need that backstop. And he's going to say, if
- 0:41Speaker 2: you are going to put all this resource and money
- 0:43Speaker 2: into rare earth mineral extraction, you need to make sure
- 0:46Speaker 2: that your investment is safe and protected. And that's ahead
- 0:49Speaker 2: of course of President Zelenski of Ukraine visiting the White
- 0:52Speaker 2: House tomorrow, so we think sign this deal on these
- 0:55Speaker 2: rare earth minerals, and the UK also hoping to avoid
- 0:58Speaker 2: any kind of tariffs that we've seen on allies like Mexico,
- 1:01Speaker 2: Canada and the EU because he wants to play Sakirstama
- 1:05Speaker 2: on that special love that Trump has for the UK
- 1:08Speaker 2: given his mother was Scottish.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Okay. Now, meanwhile, we're following the progress of Andrew Tait
- 1:13Speaker 1: and his brother Tristram, who had finally been extra diided
- 1:15Speaker 1: from Romania. It only took three years. Where's that story ed?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Well? They have now landed in Florida in the past
- 1:24Speaker 2: half hour. They have arrived via private jet at Fort
- 1:28Speaker 2: Lauderdale International Airport. Now there is still a lot of
- 1:31Speaker 2: confusion about this. The pair have been detained for the
- 1:35Speaker 2: last three years in Romania, where they had moved to,
- 1:39Speaker 2: and they were accused of human trafficking and rape in
- 1:43Speaker 2: the country, charges they deny. They were also facing a
- 1:45Speaker 2: separate case in the UK of rape and human trafficking
- 1:49Speaker 2: as well. But what appears to have happened is that
- 1:53Speaker 2: Rick Grennell, who is a sort of representative for Donald
- 1:58Speaker 2: Trump at the UNIX Security Conference, held a meeting with
- 2:03Speaker 2: the Romanian foreign minister where it's thought that perhaps he
- 2:07Speaker 2: had requested that the two be allowed to leave the country,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and that is what prosecutors have done. They haven't dropped
- 2:13Speaker 2: the cases, but they have returned their passports to them
- 2:16Speaker 2: and let them return to the US. Now, once they're
- 2:18Speaker 2: in the US, it's highly unlikely they could ever be
- 2:20Speaker 2: extradited to face both the Romanian and the British case,
- 2:23Speaker 2: so some confusion exactly what this intervention has been into
- 2:28Speaker 2: the Romanian justice system to get these two highly controversial,
- 2:32Speaker 2: problematic individuals released and back to the US.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Vince mcavinian, I thank you for more from early edition
- 2:40Speaker 1: with Ryan Bridge.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Listen live to news talks it had been from five
