- 0:28Speaker 1: on television. So a big shout out to Collars and Co.

- 1:23Speaker 1: with leagues around the country and invite you to send
- 1:29Speaker 1: your questions to the parents Dugaut Just a quick sort
- 1:32Speaker 1: of background stuff Justin on our guest tonight, Tim Kirkshon.
- 1:37Speaker 1: He is as entertaining, as informed as a guy I've
- 1:42Speaker 1: ever known. He is a close, close friend of mine.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We go back a long time. We'll talk about Tim's
- 1:48Speaker 1: journey at ESPN and what he did before that. But
- 1:51Speaker 1: there is no more passionate baseball fan on the planet.
- 1:54Speaker 3: None.
- 1:55Speaker 5: And I know you love the game and I love
- 1:57Speaker 5: the game.
- 1:57Speaker 1: There's nobody who's more passionate about it and perfect for
- 2:00Speaker 1: are what we are doing here, which is to try
- 2:03Speaker 1: to educate parents of kids that are playing. He will
- 2:06Speaker 1: take us down roads that we maybe didn't anticipate, and
- 2:10Speaker 1: he will shed light on things that you know that
- 2:13Speaker 1: he thinks we can improve in the game. And that's
- 2:15Speaker 1: really what our goal here is on dirt from the degout,
- 2:17Speaker 1: getting the next generation to play this game, to enjoy
- 2:21Speaker 1: this game, to make their journey as special as possible.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah, man, And it's it's always great to talk to
- 2:28Speaker 2: people like Tim who just are so passionate about the
- 2:31Speaker 2: game of baseball, right, And that's that's the stuff that
- 2:35Speaker 2: we're all about.
- 2:36Speaker 4: We just everybody that we have on it. It's such
- 2:38Speaker 4: a passion for the.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Game and the growth of the game and what the
- 2:41Speaker 2: game means to them.
- 2:42Speaker 4: And he's just such a great example of.
- 2:44Speaker 2: It, someone who's done so much in the game before
- 2:48Speaker 2: the game.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Super fired up to talk to him tonight.
- 2:52Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:52Speaker 1: With that, we remind everybody to ask your questions in
- 2:54Speaker 1: the chat questions for Tim, and let's bring him in.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Now.
- 2:58Speaker 1: This is a Hall of Fame guy from the Hall
- 3:01Speaker 1: of Fame, but he's a Hall of Fame person. More importantly,
- 3:04Speaker 1: he also has his own podcast with his son Jeffrey,
- 3:06Speaker 1: who is a terrific guy as well. Right here on
- 3:09Speaker 1: the Foul Territory Network called is this a great game
- 3:12Speaker 1: or what? We encourage everybody to check that out as well.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Tim.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We've just spent the last twenty four hours together and
- 3:19Speaker 1: we continue to be together though in different parts of
- 3:22Speaker 1: the state of Pennsylvania. You look great tonight. I can
- 3:26Speaker 1: tell you're really fired up to do this.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Bud Well, Sorry, I don't have the matching Pulo shirt,
- 3:32Speaker 3: but just for Ravi, I wore my Walter Johnson's fleece
- 3:36Speaker 3: pullover because you may not know, but I went to
- 3:40Speaker 3: Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Maryland, named after the
- 3:45Speaker 3: greatest pitcher ever and Rabbi and I I used to
- 3:49Speaker 3: ask him when we used to do games together all
- 3:52Speaker 3: the time for the booth. I would just routinely ask
- 3:55Speaker 3: him in the middle of the game out of nowhere.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Did I ever tell you I went to Walter Johnson
- 3:59Speaker 3: High School? Already told him that a million times, and
- 4:02Speaker 3: all it did was annoy and aggravate him. And he's
- 4:06Speaker 3: even better in the booth when he's annoyed and aggravated.
- 4:10Speaker 3: So now it's like on our podcast, it's a regular feature.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Did I ever tell you I went to Walter Johns
- 4:15Speaker 3: in high school? And I wear the stupid pullover like
- 4:18Speaker 3: almost every episode, because I'm so proud of the fact
- 4:22Speaker 3: that I made a career out of baseball and went
- 4:25Speaker 3: to a school named after the greatest pitcher ever, and
- 4:28Speaker 3: Rabbi knows I worked for the school paper there.
- 4:32Speaker 5: It was I was going to get to that.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Rabb knew that I worked for a year book. It
- 4:37Speaker 3: was called The wind Up, so he's heard all of
- 4:40Speaker 3: this stuff. And then I would ask him, did I
- 4:42Speaker 3: ever tell you I went to Walter Johns in high school?
- 4:44Speaker 3: And he would say ten thousand times, stop and.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Leave me alone. So great, man, that's great. I'm great
- 4:53Speaker 4: to have you on. Man, we appreciate your time.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Sure that only happens ten thousand times a day. Where
- 5:00Speaker 1: Tim begins the story and I'd say it the averages
- 5:04Speaker 1: six words before I can say, oh, we heard that
- 5:07Speaker 1: one about the parking garage. We heard that one about
- 5:10Speaker 1: printing out your tickets. We heard that one about the
- 5:13Speaker 1: train rides back and forth from Toronto. We heard that
- 5:16Speaker 1: one about the garage. We heard that one about the furniture.
- 5:19Speaker 1: We've heard them all, but they are great and for
- 5:23Speaker 1: that we are grateful. So Tim, the goal of our
- 5:26Speaker 1: little podcast here in our live show is to kind
- 5:30Speaker 1: of help the parents of players, whether they're five years
- 5:34Speaker 1: old or fifteen years.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Old, on their own journey.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And each of these journeys are unique, and some will
- 5:41Speaker 1: end up in the major leagues, few of them. Some
- 5:43Speaker 1: will end up in high school, some will go to
- 5:45Speaker 1: college and play. When you look at your career covering
- 5:50Speaker 1: the sport, and this is a big broad question, but
- 5:54Speaker 1: relative to the youth who play now, compared to maybe
- 5:57Speaker 1: when you and I were kids playing the game improved,
- 6:01Speaker 1: how has the game taken some steps back?
- 6:04Speaker 5: You go to the Little League World Series all the time.
- 6:06Speaker 3: What do you seeing, Well, I'm seeing that this is
- 6:10Speaker 3: very important for our young people and our parents especially
- 6:14Speaker 3: to understand. The one thing that I've never forgotten is
- 6:18Speaker 3: how hard this game is to play. And we just
- 6:21Speaker 3: covered the All Star Game Rabbi and I, where there
- 6:24Speaker 3: were there was one extra base hit and twenty seven
- 6:27Speaker 3: strikeouts in the All Star Game, proving again when pictures
- 6:31Speaker 3: today locate with their great stuff, the hitters have virtually
- 6:36Speaker 3: no chance. And this is the way it normally is.
- 6:38Speaker 3: When you're an eight year old kid and you face
- 6:42Speaker 3: that kid who's the biggest kid in your neighborhood and
- 6:44Speaker 3: you're scared to death to step in the box against him.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Everyone has a story like that about a kid from
- 6:52Speaker 3: his neighborhood. So that's the first lesson we have to
- 6:55Speaker 3: teach all of our kids is this is a really
- 6:58Speaker 3: hard game to play, and if you want to get
- 7:00Speaker 3: really good at it, you have to show up and
- 7:03Speaker 3: try every day. And some days it's just going to
- 7:06Speaker 3: beat you. It's going to be better than you. That
- 7:09Speaker 3: doesn't mean you give into the game, but you recognize
- 7:13Speaker 3: today that picture was better than I was. Tomorrow, I'm
- 7:16Speaker 3: going to go try to beat him. But that's the
- 7:19Speaker 3: most important thing that we can learn from Ravi's day
- 7:22Speaker 3: as a player. My day is a player, and kids
- 7:25Speaker 3: and major leaguers today, this is the hardest game in
- 7:28Speaker 3: the world to play. I will argue this with anyone.
- 7:31Speaker 3: The danger involved, the courage it takes to play it,
- 7:33Speaker 3: the fear involved is all real, and you got to
- 7:37Speaker 3: get through that if you want to be the player
- 7:39Speaker 3: that you want to be. That's the first lesson for
- 7:42Speaker 3: big leaguers and little kids. The game is really hard
- 7:45Speaker 3: to play.
- 7:47Speaker 2: That's so great, Tim, What did you know with your background,
- 7:52Speaker 2: your passion for the game. When did that start for you?
- 7:55Speaker 2: Obviously you were passionate about it in high school, but
- 7:58Speaker 2: when did you fall in love with the game?
- 8:02Speaker 3: Well, got to remember where I came from. My dad
- 8:05Speaker 3: was a really good player, and my dad had a
- 8:09Speaker 3: feel for the game unlike very few people I've ever
- 8:12Speaker 3: met in my life, and he taught his three boys
- 8:15Speaker 3: how to play the game. He taught us how to
- 8:18Speaker 3: love the game, and he gave us all a great
- 8:21Speaker 3: feel for the game. This was the primary language spoken
- 8:24Speaker 3: in my house growing up. It was baseball. It drove
- 8:27Speaker 3: my mother crazy because she was from England, so she
- 8:30Speaker 3: didn't quite understand the whole baseball thing. But this is
- 8:34Speaker 3: what my father did. And also understand My father was
- 8:36Speaker 3: a doctor of mathematics a PhD. Went to MIT undergrad
- 8:41Speaker 3: so he made sure his kids were as good a
- 8:43Speaker 3: student as they could be. But in the downtime we
- 8:46Speaker 3: were playing baseball, we were looking up stuff, statistics that
- 8:50Speaker 3: my father was showing me. I grew up the stories
- 8:53Speaker 3: of Ted Williams, Jimmy Fox, Lefty Grove, Boston Red Sox.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So I got the greatest upbringing ever for someone who
- 9:00Speaker 3: loved the game. So I can go back to as
- 9:03Speaker 3: far back as I can remember, literally age five, and
- 9:06Speaker 3: that's when I learned to love the game. And here
- 9:08Speaker 3: I am sixty five years later, and I still love
- 9:12Speaker 3: the game as much as ever. And it's all because
- 9:15Speaker 3: my father gave me the gift of a love for
- 9:18Speaker 3: the game and a feel for the game. And he
- 9:20Speaker 3: gave it to my two brothers also. Both of them
- 9:23Speaker 3: are in the Hall of Fame at Catholic University for baseball.
- 9:26Speaker 3: So this is all we talked about growing up. And
- 9:29Speaker 3: we were probably a little too myopic. I'm not the
- 9:32Speaker 3: most well rounded guy in the world, that's for sure.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I know baseball, basketball, and sitcoms from the sixties and
- 9:38Speaker 3: not much else. But my dad made sure that we
- 9:41Speaker 3: had an understanding of the game as we move forward.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Right, I mean, and you can't check those there's no
- 9:48Speaker 1: one else on the planet that checks those three boxes,
- 9:50Speaker 1: maybe two of them, meaning basketball and baseball. But when
- 9:54Speaker 1: you throw sitcoms of the sixties in there, that a
- 9:58Speaker 1: lot of leaves fall off that tree. Here's another aside
- 10:01Speaker 1: on Tim because as you see, his first name is Tim,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and we're doing a game at Fenway Park justin and
- 10:08Speaker 1: we get into the story about his dad who went
- 10:10Speaker 1: to MIT, which led everybody to say, you realize you
- 10:14Speaker 1: can't spell tim without m T.
- 10:21Speaker 3: These were the routine conversations that Ravi, Eduardo and I
- 10:25Speaker 3: had in the booth while we're doing a game. And
- 10:28Speaker 3: justin one day, Eduardo he has a T shirt which
- 10:32Speaker 3: I have that says six four three over to equals
- 10:37Speaker 3: two right, six' four to three is a double, play
- 10:39Speaker 3: six four to three double. Play eduardo tells the story
- 10:43Speaker 3: that he wears THE t shirt TO mit before A
- 10:48Speaker 3: Red sox game At Fenway park and all the most
- 10:51Speaker 3: brilliant people in the world are looking at THIS t
- 10:53Speaker 3: shirt and they can't understand what it. Means so he
- 10:58Speaker 3: tells these people from, me and this is WHAT i.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Means six four three is two outs to double, play
- 11:04Speaker 3: and they still didn't. Understand so these are these are
- 11:09Speaker 3: my favorite discussions that we have in the booth And.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Rabi you have to acknowledge we talk about these serious,
- 11:15Speaker 3: breakdowns swings, pictures but people don't remember. That they remember
- 11:19Speaker 3: THAT i drink diet mountain dew and read the box
- 11:21Speaker 3: scores in the, morning and they remember THAT i wear
- 11:24Speaker 3: a shirt that says six' four to three. Over too
- 11:27Speaker 3: this is what people remember because it relates, to them
- 11:31Speaker 3: and that's what we're trying to do when WE'RE doing.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Tv together, remind me remind me justin to bring up
- 11:39Speaker 1: The The tim kirshon glove slash mitten story a little
- 11:43Speaker 1: bit later on that that was another example of just
- 11:46Speaker 1: complete stupidity during. A broadcast but the best part of what,
- 11:49Speaker 1: We do tim here, before you before you, jump in
- 11:52Speaker 1: is we allow OUR members uh to, ask questions and
- 11:56Speaker 1: we obviously have a bunch of them here.
- 11:57Speaker 5: For you so here's the. First one it Comes.
- 11:59Speaker 1: From dan, he says you have interviewed and built relationships
- 12:03Speaker 1: with some of the greatest players who've, ever played who
- 12:06Speaker 1: genuinely surprised you the most when you got to know
- 12:10Speaker 1: them off.
- 12:11Speaker 5: The, Record.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Well i'll tell you the GUY that i made a
- 12:17Speaker 3: breakthrough with that very few people. Ever Have and i'm
- 12:20Speaker 3: not boasting and. Not bragging i'm trying to answer. The
- 12:23Speaker 3: Question cal ripkin is a difficult man to. Talk to he's,
- 12:26Speaker 3: never rude he's, never abusive he's. Never difficult he just.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Doesn't share, but somehow someway covering that team in, THE
- 12:34Speaker 3: eighties i got to Know, cal, ripken really, really well
- 12:39Speaker 3: and away from, THE field i got to know him.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Really WELL so i went to, HIS house i went to,
- 12:45Speaker 3: HIS gym i drove to and from games. With him
- 12:48Speaker 3: this was all around when He Broke lou. Garrigg's record
- 12:52Speaker 3: so he's the guy that people look at, And say
- 12:54Speaker 3: i've never gotten anything truly interesting From, cal Ripkin and
- 12:57Speaker 3: i'm thinking he's one of the most Interesting players i've
- 13:00Speaker 3: ever talked to because he's so unbelievably analytical. And observant
- 13:06Speaker 3: his memory, is ridiculous he has a tremendous sense. Of
- 13:09Speaker 3: humor but you really got to get in there to
- 13:12Speaker 3: know him before you're going to learn what you need
- 13:15Speaker 3: to learn. From him and he's not the most trusting
- 13:18Speaker 3: guy in. The WORLD and i don't mean that as.
- 13:19Speaker 3: A negative he is the most prepared man in, the
- 13:22Speaker 3: world and he has to Know that i'm on the
- 13:25Speaker 3: same page with You if i'm going to tell you
- 13:27Speaker 3: all of. This stuff and that's the POINT that i,
- 13:29Speaker 3: got him and it was really fun to be around
- 13:33Speaker 3: him at, any point but especially when he Was Breaking lou.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Garrett's RECORD tim i got to follow up on that
- 13:40Speaker 2: because the game has obviously changed with, that Too and
- 13:42Speaker 2: i've talked to other writers in the past and they've
- 13:45Speaker 2: shared with me that you used to have more in
- 13:48Speaker 2: depth conversations that would go, more personal that they would
- 13:50Speaker 2: feel like would be, kept separate right beat writers that, Would,
- 13:54Speaker 2: say hey there's a line you don't share that you
- 13:56Speaker 2: don't write, about it you don't post. About, It right
- 13:58Speaker 2: but we're now in an day and age where everything,
- 14:02Speaker 2: gets out it, feels like and so have you noticed
- 14:05Speaker 2: that in covering guys that they maybe have a little
- 14:08Speaker 2: bit more of a buffer around them to be careful
- 14:12Speaker 2: with what they share what, they're saying or have you
- 14:14Speaker 2: not noticed a real change.
- 14:15Speaker 3: In, that no there's been an. Enormous change and this
- 14:19Speaker 3: is one of the biggest changes in the forty five
- 14:21Speaker 3: Years that i've covered baseball is the access that we get.
- 14:25Speaker 3: To players there used to be a day JUSTIN where
- 14:27Speaker 3: i would sit Next To earl weaver by myself for
- 14:31Speaker 3: forty five minutes on, the bench talking baseball with the
- 14:35Speaker 3: greatest Baseball mind i've. Ever met it was just HIM
- 14:37Speaker 3: and I and i could ask HIM anything i wanted
- 14:40Speaker 3: and he would. Tell, me now before a game they
- 14:43Speaker 3: take the manager and sending him into some antiseptic interview
- 14:46Speaker 3: room and there are fifty people in there. Asking questions
- 14:49Speaker 3: he's not gonna share like he shared with me on.
- 14:52Speaker 3: The bench so the lack of access has really hurt
- 14:56Speaker 3: all of us in. The business we just don't get
- 14:59Speaker 3: the same time with. These guys And the Internet and
- 15:02Speaker 3: twitter and ax whatever we, call it has. Changed everything
- 15:05Speaker 3: these guys are afraid to come out and be colorful
- 15:08Speaker 3: and be different and say something mildly controversial because all
- 15:12Speaker 3: you're going to do is. Offend somebody is we offend
- 15:15Speaker 3: everyone with anything we say, These days and, it really
- 15:19Speaker 3: it really makes me sad THAT when i wrote my,
- 15:22Speaker 3: second book and the second one of the chapters was
- 15:24Speaker 3: all about funny guys, in baseball humor, in baseball and
- 15:29Speaker 3: all the stories were from like nineteen eighty and. Nineteen
- 15:32Speaker 3: ninety but Once the internet, came in people do not
- 15:36Speaker 3: want to share, their inside, you, know dreams hopes and
- 15:39Speaker 3: stories because they know it's going to end Up on
- 15:42Speaker 3: Twitter and i'm gonna get killed, for it whether it's offensive.
- 15:45Speaker 3: Or not that's what really bothers me a little BIT
- 15:48Speaker 3: is i have, to work and, IT'S okay i have
- 15:50Speaker 3: to work extra extra hard to find a guy who's
- 15:53Speaker 3: going to tell me something, mildly entertaining, mildly amusing without
- 15:56Speaker 3: worrying about whether it's going to get him hurt in, so.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Right and you know, this TOO justin, i MEAN and
- 16:03Speaker 1: i can say this because when you're in the game
- 16:05Speaker 1: for as Long as, tim has there's credibility that you,
- 16:08Speaker 1: build up and. He does and we are lucky enough
- 16:11Speaker 1: to still have some of those conversations one, on one
- 16:15Speaker 1: whether It's With dave Roberts Or terry Francona Or dusty
- 16:19Speaker 1: baker who we had on. Our podcast so, those conversations while,
- 16:23Speaker 1: they're last they still. Do exist and that, speaks to,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you know the longevity and the credibility That that tim
- 16:32Speaker 1: brings and those that have been around the, game FOREVER because,
- 16:35Speaker 1: i know you know you watched baseball, tonight forever? Did
- 16:38Speaker 1: you so you know all About the tim And The
- 16:40Speaker 1: peter gammons And The harold reynolds And The john kruk
- 16:43Speaker 1: and the And The, dave campbell's you know who who love.
- 16:46Speaker 1: The GAME and i think that's part of where those relationships.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Stem from they know we're in it for the. Right
- 16:52Speaker 1: reasons want to get to another. Question here You answered.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Royce's questions so let's go Ahead to, ryan's question and
- 16:58Speaker 1: this one asked him if you're given advice to an
- 17:01Speaker 1: eighteen year old who dreams are playing in the, big
- 17:03Speaker 1: leagues what would your top three pieces of advice be.
- 17:08Speaker 3: For an eighteen year old who wants to play in the?
- 17:10Speaker 5: Big leagues fifteen, year old fifteen, year old fifteen.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Year, old well, number one you better take a, million
- 17:16Speaker 3: swings a million, ground balls and throw a million pitches
- 17:19Speaker 3: if you're gonna want to be good at this game,
- 17:21Speaker 3: to repeat because it is so difficult. To play the
- 17:25Speaker 3: other thing you have to do is you have to
- 17:28Speaker 3: learn how to play. THE game i worry a little
- 17:31Speaker 3: bit that today's players simply overpower the sport with their incredible.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Physical GIFTS but i, really SENSE and i hate to,
- 17:42Speaker 3: acknowledge this a lot of these guys don't even really
- 17:45Speaker 3: know how. To play their bodies just take over and
- 17:48Speaker 3: they're great. At it BUT when i was first covering
- 17:51Speaker 3: in the late seventies, EARLY eighties i Learned From, Cal Ripken,
- 17:55Speaker 3: Alan Trammel, Paul Molder, Robin Yell, george brett those guys
- 17:59Speaker 3: how to play. The game and that's what a fifteen
- 18:01Speaker 3: year old has to understand now is that you have
- 18:05Speaker 3: to learn the subtle nuances of the game if you're
- 18:09Speaker 3: going to get to the. Highest Level and i'm not
- 18:11Speaker 3: sure we're. Doing That, scott Bradley former princeton, baseball coach
- 18:17Speaker 3: told me that a couple of years ago he was
- 18:19Speaker 3: recruiting some kids to Come To Princeton high school kids and, he,
- 18:22Speaker 3: said so where are you playing? This summer and the
- 18:26Speaker 3: kids went, Like, this, oh oh we don't play in.
- 18:28Speaker 3: The summer we just train in. The summer we lift
- 18:32Speaker 3: and we hit in, the cage but we don't play.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Any Games and scott had to look at them, and, say,
- 18:37Speaker 3: fellas sorry the only way you're going to get better
- 18:40Speaker 3: at this diabolically difficult game is to play as many games.
- 18:45Speaker 3: As possible you're not going to learn how to hit
- 18:48Speaker 3: the cutoff man while you're in. The cage you're not
- 18:51Speaker 3: going to learn how to get a secondary lead when
- 18:54Speaker 3: you're in the. Weight ROOM so i would tell every
- 18:56Speaker 3: fifteen year old eighteen, year old play the game as
- 19:00Speaker 3: often as. You can and it really worries me that
- 19:03Speaker 3: we have these these scouting tryout camps where it's not
- 19:07Speaker 3: even a game that's. Being played we're just looking at.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Your tools how hard do? You throw what is your?
- 19:12Speaker 3: Arm strength what is your? Bat speed what is your?
- 19:15Speaker 3: Exit velocity when we really need, to learn how do
- 19:18Speaker 3: you know how to play. The game if you could
- 19:20Speaker 3: throw one hundred miles, an hour god, Bless you but
- 19:23Speaker 3: can you throw a strike? With that do you know
- 19:25Speaker 3: when to throw your? Breaking ball that's the STUFF that
- 19:29Speaker 3: i would tell a fifteen year old is use your.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Physical gifts they're crucial to the of. The elements but
- 19:36Speaker 3: you got to learn how to play. The game if,
- 19:38Speaker 3: you don't you'll never be as good as you want.
- 19:40Speaker 2: To be so good Tim so rab was telling me
- 19:44Speaker 2: that At The Little League, world series you like to,
- 19:47Speaker 2: stay close you, Pay attention you watch all, the Teams.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Especially japan what is it about that that you're so
- 19:54Speaker 2: infatuated with At The Little League?
- 19:56Speaker 4: World, series well.
- 19:58Speaker 3: We all played at age, two twelve and we all
- 20:01Speaker 3: remember what it was like when we were twelve. Years
- 20:03Speaker 3: old so nothing makes me Happier and ravacan acknowledge this
- 20:07Speaker 3: than watching those kids, take infield because it's one thing we.
- 20:11Speaker 3: All remember those kids who, were bigger stronger and better than.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Everyone else they just overpowered. The game they could throw
- 20:17Speaker 3: it by the. Littler kids BUT when i see a
- 20:20Speaker 3: second basement and a shortstop make a seamless double play
- 20:25Speaker 3: in a little, league game it just warms. My HEART
- 20:28Speaker 3: and i say it all, the time the skillful play
- 20:31Speaker 3: of our middle infielders for twelve. Years old you can't
- 20:34Speaker 3: develop those skills unless you take a million ground balls
- 20:38Speaker 3: and you make the turn at second a. Million times
- 20:41Speaker 3: AND whenever i, SEE that I just i just lose.
- 20:44Speaker 3: My breath it makes me so happy that, these kids
- 20:48Speaker 3: in a time where so many other sports seem to
- 20:50Speaker 3: be more popular, than baseball they're out there on, a
- 20:54Speaker 3: field probably. By themselves they're, just them and they're coaching,
- 20:57Speaker 3: their father learning how to make the, double play to kick,
- 21:00Speaker 3: that bag get out of, the way and make the throat.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Of first that's what makes me the happiest At The
- 21:05Speaker 3: Little League world series is watching the kids. TAKE infield
- 21:09Speaker 3: i stand right on. The field rabbie will TELL you
- 21:12Speaker 3: i will not miss in field for any team because
- 21:15Speaker 3: you can usually tell how good a team is when.
- 21:20Speaker 5: He's literally on.
- 21:21Speaker 1: The.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Field justin he's the fielder on the field.
- 21:25Speaker 3: RIGHT justin i love. Basketball too you can tell a
- 21:28Speaker 3: lot about a youth basketball team or any basketball team
- 21:32Speaker 3: by the layup lines that. They take the integrity of
- 21:35Speaker 3: the infield that that little league team takes will tell
- 21:38Speaker 3: you an awful lot about whether that team's a good
- 21:41Speaker 3: team or a.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Bad, team well IN tim i WANT to i want
- 21:44Speaker 2: to follow up with THAT because i think one of
- 21:46Speaker 2: the things that is lost in today's youth sports is
- 21:50Speaker 2: SO when i played shout out to my my, Best Buddy,
- 21:53Speaker 2: todd BROUNSLICK but i. Played shortstop todd played. Second base
- 21:58Speaker 2: starting at eight, years old it was. Our community we
- 22:01Speaker 2: played together almost our, entire life right until you get.
- 22:04Speaker 4: To college we end up being able to play in the.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Summer league but there there's this lost art of knowing,
- 22:10Speaker 2: each other to knowing the, you know, the strengths the
- 22:14Speaker 2: weaknesses and the others that you flow within, that infield
- 22:18Speaker 2: that you know where everybody's going, to be you know
- 22:20Speaker 2: what they're all doing because you're all playing together all.
- 22:23Speaker 2: The time AND what i see now is which, is
- 22:26Speaker 2: fine it's part, of it but there's a lot of
- 22:28Speaker 2: players that play in a lot of, different teams and
- 22:30Speaker 2: so that communication and that feel for each other within,
- 22:33Speaker 2: the Infield especially tim as a baseball, guy myself especially
- 22:38Speaker 2: in the, middle infield where that communication. Is everything to
- 22:41Speaker 2: turn a seamless double play is, super critical to know
- 22:45Speaker 2: where everybody's going, to be the timing on. Those throws
- 22:48Speaker 2: and it just makes me feel LIKE if i had
- 22:51Speaker 2: to change, SOME things i wish we could go back
- 22:53Speaker 2: a little bit to playing with some of the core
- 22:55Speaker 2: groups in your community a little bit longer so you
- 22:58Speaker 2: get some of that feel.
- 22:59Speaker 4: And you get.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Thatmmunication, Now MAN but i can absolutely see what, You're, Saying, tim.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Well couldn't agree with you more. On that, justin again
- 23:07Speaker 3: my Late brother matt is eleven months older, than me and.
- 23:10Speaker 3: We played we were in the same, grade together we
- 23:12Speaker 3: played on the same. Teams together we often played shortstop
- 23:15Speaker 3: and second, base together and we knew exactly how the other,
- 23:18Speaker 3: guy played and it. Was critical you move way on.
- 23:21Speaker 3: FROM that I Watched cal ripkin and His Brother billy
- 23:24Speaker 3: ripkin play shortstop and second base together and it was
- 23:27Speaker 3: absolutely seamless to watch. Them play they knew exactly where
- 23:32Speaker 3: the other person was going to be at. All times
- 23:35Speaker 3: that is absolutely crucial when you're playing a game that
- 23:39Speaker 3: is this difficult and making a double play in the
- 23:42Speaker 3: most important time really requires you to know that guy.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Over there what troubles, ME again I hope i'm not,
- 23:48Speaker 3: complaining here but we have these travel teams where you're
- 23:51Speaker 3: playing with a bunch of new kids all. The TIME
- 23:54Speaker 3: and i don't know, about, you guys BUT when i
- 23:56Speaker 3: was in, high school the goal was to win a
- 23:58Speaker 3: state championship for our. High school and NOW when i
- 24:02Speaker 3: hear some kids don't even play for their high, school
- 24:05Speaker 3: team they're playing on a. Travel team that saddens ME
- 24:09Speaker 3: because i remember when we were in. High school if
- 24:12Speaker 3: you had a really good game baseball, or basketball the,
- 24:14Speaker 3: next day you are a mini celebrity, in school like
- 24:18Speaker 3: you got three, hits yesterday you scored twenty points, last
- 24:21Speaker 3: night or something. Like that you don't get that when
- 24:23Speaker 3: you play for your. Travel team and THAT'S what i
- 24:25Speaker 3: think we've lost a little, bit too is the. Teamwork
- 24:28Speaker 3: aspect i'm on the same team with, these guys and
- 24:31Speaker 3: like you and your shortstop, second basement you were on
- 24:34Speaker 3: the same team for, ten years. Fifteen years that Stuff. Really, matt, yes.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Yeah it's a challenge too at the collegiate level because
- 24:42Speaker 1: of the nil and a transfer portal and you can't.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Establish relationship it's part of what Makes The Little League
- 24:48Speaker 1: world series. So great And As, tim KORbin The great,
- 24:50Speaker 1: vanderbilt coach, once said, you know that's the Last time
- 24:52Speaker 1: rivey that these kids will play for the name on
- 24:55Speaker 1: the front of the jersey as opposed to the name
- 24:57Speaker 1: on the back of.
- 24:58Speaker 6: The Jersey Big second apples season, coming up there might
- 25:01Speaker 6: be a, hot ticket a, rivalry series a sold out

- 25:59Speaker 1: It later let's get to this Question From. Don tim
- 26:03Speaker 1: then this is a this is a. Big question but
- 26:05Speaker 1: there's a million ways that you can, go funniest most
- 26:08Speaker 1: bizarre moment you've ever witnessed in a clubhouse that you
- 26:12Speaker 1: can actually.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Talk, about.
- 26:16Speaker 3: Well there have been so many. Clubhouse MOMENTS but, i,
- 26:21Speaker 3: was well this. IS terrible i shouldn't tell you, this
- 26:23Speaker 3: story but that the, whole hazing whole. Hazing process i'm
- 26:28Speaker 3: not sure what that's. All ABOUT and i saw the
- 26:31Speaker 3: hazing PROCESS when i first started Covering the rangers in nineteen.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Eighty two what they would do to. Young players, you
- 26:39Speaker 3: know they had one one player With the rangers had
- 26:43Speaker 3: to run around the complex naked because that's what veteran
- 26:48Speaker 3: guys told him, to DO and i just don't think
- 26:52Speaker 3: that is. REALLY necessary i don't think it's necessary To
- 26:55Speaker 3: Take Chan, ho park who Came from korea and had
- 27:00Speaker 3: grown up in a, different way and They, the dodgers took,
- 27:04Speaker 3: his suit his brand new suit and cut it, into
- 27:07Speaker 3: pieces so the suit is now short pants and the
- 27:12Speaker 3: sleeves are now as long as the SLEEVES that i,
- 27:14Speaker 3: would wear which is, really short and made him wear
- 27:18Speaker 3: that on. The airplane i'm not sure that. Is necessary
- 27:23Speaker 3: but as corneyon ridiculous as, it sounds these are the
- 27:26Speaker 3: little things that bring, teams together and a guy actually
- 27:31Speaker 3: feels like he's part of the team when they pull
- 27:34Speaker 3: a prank on him or they hate him. Like that
- 27:37Speaker 3: as long as it's safe and nobody, gets hurt you
- 27:40Speaker 3: gotta be careful. With That joe madden told me a
- 27:42Speaker 3: story once where they he had his guys in spring
- 27:46Speaker 3: Training bring they were assigned to a task in spring
- 27:50Speaker 3: training in order to get to know their. Teammates Better
- 27:52Speaker 3: So jared washburn was one of, their pictures a, veteran
- 27:56Speaker 3: picture and he'd grown up on a farm In Like,
- 27:58Speaker 3: north dakota so he for part of, his task he
- 28:02Speaker 3: had to bring in something to show what it was
- 28:05Speaker 3: like to live on, a farm so He brought the,
- 28:08Speaker 3: next day he Brought an ostrich into, the clubhouse A,
- 28:13Speaker 3: real ostrich which he had gotten that like the. State
- 28:16Speaker 3: fair so now There's real ostridge In the angels Clubhouse At.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Jose Ortiz ramon ortiz was so scared he jumped into
- 28:28Speaker 3: his locker and Said, in spanish get that big chicken out,
- 28:32Speaker 3: of here because he was so afraid of.
- 28:35Speaker 5: An OSTRIG and.
- 28:36Speaker 3: I would be afraid Of an. Ostrich also but these
- 28:40Speaker 3: are the things you do to bond your. Team together
- 28:43Speaker 3: you can do it at, age twelve and you can
- 28:45Speaker 3: do it in the. Big leagues that's the. Key, teamwork
- 28:48Speaker 3: teammates anything to connect.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Each other we just told this Story justin we just
- 28:53Speaker 1: told the Story, because verlander of course announced. His retirement
- 28:56Speaker 1: so one of, the things some of The things tim
- 29:00Speaker 1: Tell us verlander could locate. His slider so he decides
- 29:05Speaker 1: to throw his slider into a couch in the Clubhouse
- 29:08Speaker 1: And pete alonso comes out of the shower and He
- 29:11Speaker 1: Sees justin verlander whipping the baseball into the couch and
- 29:15Speaker 1: in his towel or. Underwear unclear, he says do you
- 29:19Speaker 1: need somebody to? Stand In and rklander. Says Sure so
- 29:25Speaker 1: alonso is standing there for, an hour standing In while
- 29:30Speaker 1: verlander is throwing baseballs sliders into a couch in the clubs.
- 29:37Speaker 3: So good on a, different level this is THE house
- 29:41Speaker 3: i grew. Up in when our games, were over we
- 29:43Speaker 3: would go home and watch BASEBALL, on tv and my
- 29:46Speaker 3: father would routinely throw a pillow down in the middle
- 29:49Speaker 3: of the wreck room and show us the proper way
- 29:52Speaker 3: to make the double play as a second baseman and,
- 29:54Speaker 3: a shortstop and he would always throw it into. The
- 29:57Speaker 3: couch but one time he aired mailed the couch a
- 30:01Speaker 3: little bit too much and the ball went flying Through
- 30:04Speaker 3: the french store window in the. Rec room we're all
- 30:08Speaker 3: in big trouble now because my mom can, hear this and,
- 30:11Speaker 3: my dad the funniest man in, the world looks, at
- 30:14Speaker 3: me his, youngest son, And, says tim tell mom that you,
- 30:18Speaker 3: did It and i'll get you. Off easy that's how
- 30:20Speaker 3: he tried to get out of it when my mother knew, All, along.
- 30:24Speaker 5: Jeff you were. BEHIND this i. Know it don't lie,
- 30:27Speaker 5: to me.
- 30:28Speaker 3: SO yeah i know all about throwing the ball into.
- 30:31Speaker 3: The couch my dad is all.
- 30:33Speaker 2: The, Great, Hey tim I'm gonna i'm gonna teach you.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Some tonight you probably know way more about me or
- 30:39Speaker 2: way more about BASEBALL than. I Do But jared washburn
- 30:43Speaker 2: grew up about forty minutes FROM where i Did.
- 30:45Speaker 4: In, WISCONSIN yes i Had The Rock.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Dakota's, wisconsin, sorry yes Yes You, Jarry.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Webster Wisconsin And.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Jared washburn when he was in, high school there was
- 30:57Speaker 2: a league that did, a draft and they would do
- 30:59Speaker 2: a draft for. The postseason and so there's this one
- 31:03Speaker 2: MANAGER that i know of one of these teams that
- 31:05Speaker 2: drafted him and didn't use him in. The postseason and
- 31:08Speaker 2: the joke is forever ongoing that he had a big
- 31:12Speaker 2: leaguer on his team that he didn't use in. The
- 31:14Speaker 2: playoffs he's in his seventies and he still hears this
- 31:18Speaker 2: joke to. This Day and i'm sure he's excited for
- 31:21Speaker 2: that to just. Be passed but it'll never go. Past Here, But,
- 31:25Speaker 2: websley wisconsin shout out to. Those guys small town.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Right, Right well god bless all of our coaches, out
- 31:31Speaker 3: there by, The WAY but i have a friend of
- 31:33Speaker 3: mine who coached a twelve year old, travel team and
- 31:37Speaker 3: he got a really high level, travel team and he
- 31:41Speaker 3: got so tired of the parents screaming at the kids
- 31:45Speaker 3: every time the kids made an out that the coach
- 31:50Speaker 3: who pitched At the University of miami And Beat roger
- 31:54Speaker 3: clemens In A College world series, game one so meaning
- 31:58Speaker 3: he was a big. Time picture well now he's like
- 32:01Speaker 3: fifty five, years old but he can still let. It
- 32:05Speaker 3: go and he's so tired of his parents yelling at
- 32:08Speaker 3: the players that after practice, one day with all the
- 32:12Speaker 3: moms and kids still, at practice he tells, the dads
- 32:17Speaker 3: you're coming to take batting practice. Against me he goes
- 32:21Speaker 3: out there and throws as hard as. He can he
- 32:25Speaker 3: naturally strikes. Out everybody he humiliates all, the fathers and
- 32:31Speaker 3: a couple of them are, like this like what was that?
- 32:34Speaker 3: All about and he looks, at them and he looks
- 32:36Speaker 3: at all the parents, and says you have no idea
- 32:39Speaker 3: how hard this game is. To play you have no
- 32:42Speaker 3: idea what it feels like to be humiliated in front,
- 32:45Speaker 3: Of others so stop yelling at. Your KIDS and i
- 32:50Speaker 3: just raised my, hand like oh, my gosh somebody really.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Gets it and then is in a position to execute,
- 32:57Speaker 3: the plan to make sure everyone understands this is how
- 33:02Speaker 3: the game. Is played oh, my god so.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Good man so justin the, other thing one of the
- 33:07Speaker 1: Things that tim does is he'll throw ridiculous hypotheticals. OUT there,
- 33:11Speaker 1: i mean these things no one else would. Think About
- 33:14Speaker 1: but tim thinks about. These hypotheticals and one of the
- 33:17Speaker 1: things that he thinks about has the kind of connection
- 33:20Speaker 1: to what he just, brought up, which is you, ask
- 33:22Speaker 1: people if you stew it In Against, randy johnson how
- 33:26Speaker 1: many times could you put the ball in play of one?
- 33:30Speaker 1: Hundred pitches and we've had some lunatics. Say Twenty and
- 33:36Speaker 1: tim gets very offended by an answer, like, that Because
- 33:40Speaker 1: as tim would, tell you and this is this would.
- 33:43Speaker 5: Be the album the. Album title what was the name of,
- 33:49Speaker 5: The group Buzz? The tower is that what the name
- 33:51Speaker 5: of the rock?
- 33:52Speaker 3: Group? WAS yeah i was asked ONCE if i had a,
- 33:55Speaker 3: rock band and, believe me no one would have a
- 33:58Speaker 3: rock band less. THAN me, i don't EVEN though i
- 34:00Speaker 3: don't know anything. About, Music yes Buzz the tower would be.
- 34:03Speaker 3: The Name so, Rabbi's right i've asked this way too.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Many times if you get one hundred of Bats Against
- 34:09Speaker 3: randy johnson in. Your prime? What happened some people Actually
- 34:13Speaker 3: say i'm gonna get ten or, fifteen HITS and i
- 34:16Speaker 3: have to explain. TO them i have to explain you
- 34:19Speaker 3: are not only you not going to get, a hit
- 34:22Speaker 3: you are not going to put a ball, in play
- 34:24Speaker 3: and you're not gonna. Make contact because he's going to
- 34:27Speaker 3: recognize this is. A competition the first thing he's gonna
- 34:31Speaker 3: do is buzz. The tower now you are petrified because
- 34:34Speaker 3: one hundred miles an hour has just come four inches from,

- 36:44Speaker 3: these GUYS but i have to, tell him you guys.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Are idiots you have the zero chance getting a bunt
- 36:51Speaker 3: Down Against garrett cole in a major. League game, first
- 36:54Speaker 3: off you at least when, you're batting you have a
- 36:57Speaker 3: chance to turn your body and if he, hits you
- 37:00Speaker 3: he might hit you in the shoulder or in. The
- 37:01Speaker 3: back when you turn the square on a butnt you
- 37:04Speaker 3: are looking right at. The bitcher now he's gonna throw
- 37:07Speaker 3: it right at your face and you're never gonna be

- 38:32Speaker 2: Your work who is the greatest player you have seen play?
- 38:34Speaker 2: In person and what is the most memorable baseball moment
- 38:38Speaker 2: you have witnessed?
- 38:39Speaker 4: In person? Awesome question, All, Right.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Well willie mays is the Greatest player i've ever seen.
- 38:45Speaker 3: In person, Now again i'm sixty nine, years OLD so
- 38:49Speaker 3: i saw him play. In. PERSON now i Didn't See
- 38:52Speaker 3: willie mays in, the fifties when he was the greatest
- 38:55Speaker 3: player most anyone had ever seen to. That POINT but
- 39:00Speaker 3: i saw him, in person and he was breathtaking. TO
- 39:03Speaker 3: watch i maintained still when he came in in nineteen,
- 39:06Speaker 3: fifty one he was the greatest combination, of power speed
- 39:09Speaker 3: and defense that the game had. Ever seen and here
- 39:12Speaker 3: it is seventy five, years later and he is still,
- 39:16Speaker 3: for me the greatest combination, of power speed and defense
- 39:19Speaker 3: that we've. Ever Seen So willie mays is the Greatest
- 39:22Speaker 3: player i've ever seen. IN person i don't want to,
- 39:26Speaker 3: overdo this but the night That cal Ripken Broke louke,
- 39:29Speaker 3: Garrigg's record rabbi remembers this like it. Was, yesterday also
- 39:34Speaker 3: that was the most powerful Night that i've ever spent
- 39:37Speaker 3: In A major, league ballpark because that was way more
- 39:40Speaker 3: than a. Baseball story that was a story of discipline
- 39:43Speaker 3: and commitment and loyalty. And neighborhood he grew. Up there
- 39:47Speaker 3: and when he made that twenty two minute tour around
- 39:50Speaker 3: the bases and he's patting his heart and pointing to,
- 39:53Speaker 3: those people he knew who those. People were he may
- 39:56Speaker 3: not know all of, their names but he knew. Their
- 39:58Speaker 3: faces and when, was over a friend, Of Mine, bob
- 40:02Speaker 3: elliott came up. To, Me Now bob elliott is a.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Sports writer Hall of fame sports writer came up to
- 40:06Speaker 3: me before the game and, He, SAID tim i don't.
- 40:09Speaker 3: GET it i don't, FEEL it i don't. SEE it
- 40:11Speaker 3: i don't. Get it what is the big deal? About
- 40:14Speaker 3: today bob had not been part of the Build UP and,
- 40:17Speaker 3: I said, I, said boxer just something's going to happen
- 40:19Speaker 3: TONIGHT and i don't know what, it is but something's going,
- 40:22Speaker 3: to happen and you're going to know what this is.
- 40:24Speaker 3: All about and after the, fifth inning with that, Amazing Tour,
- 40:27Speaker 3: bob elliott baseball Writer, from toronto came up to me
- 40:31Speaker 3: with tears in his eyes, And, said OKAY now i
- 40:36Speaker 3: get it because he witnessed what that was. All about
- 40:40Speaker 3: that twenty two minute tour was one of the most
- 40:43Speaker 3: Amazing things i've ever seen in all The years i've.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Covered baseball, so.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Good let me ask you, This, question TIM and i, Just,
- 40:51Speaker 1: so tim we got about ten minutes, left HERE and
- 40:53Speaker 1: i don't want you to go too long, on THIS
- 40:54Speaker 1: but i know how passionate you are, about it and
- 40:56Speaker 1: it speaks to the parents and.
- 40:58Speaker 5: The kids.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Tim prioritizes being a good teammate more than anything else
- 41:06Speaker 1: in any endeavor.
- 41:08Speaker 5: In life you.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Can share why is that so critical? To you where
- 41:13Speaker 1: have you seen it manifest itself so well when it?
- 41:16Speaker 5: Works well being a?
- 41:18Speaker 3: Good, TEAMMATE well i grew up with a father who insisted.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Upon that he always told me there is no greater
- 41:27Speaker 3: compliment that anyone can pay. To you my father told
- 41:30Speaker 3: me THIS when i, was seven that you're a really,
- 41:33Speaker 3: good teammate and the worst thing that anyone can say
- 41:36Speaker 3: to you is your a. Terrible teammate and that's not
- 41:39Speaker 3: just as a baseball player or a. Basketball player that's as,
- 41:43Speaker 3: your brother as, your, sister whatever it is as, a
- 41:46Speaker 3: son as, a parent, in school whatever. It is you
- 41:50Speaker 3: just have to be a. Good teammate it's really not
- 41:53Speaker 3: that hard. To do and we see it on the
- 41:56Speaker 3: major league level all. The time and when you hear
- 41:59Speaker 3: about Stories Like, don mattingly when You Know buck showalder
- 42:03Speaker 3: Told Me ruben Sierra Joined, DON mattingley i mean Joined,
- 42:07Speaker 3: the yankees and his first home run he hit For,
- 42:09Speaker 3: the yankees he ran around the bases, very slowly, Very unluckly,
- 42:14Speaker 3: yankee Like and buck. Was furious he's. The manager and
- 42:18Speaker 3: before he can Go Get ruben sierra, And Explain don
- 42:22Speaker 3: mattingly Looks At buck showalder, And says i'll take. This
- 42:26Speaker 3: one and He Takes ruben sierra down the runway privately
- 42:30Speaker 3: and whispers, to him this is we Are. The yankees
- 42:34Speaker 3: we don't do. That Here And ruben sierra never did.
- 42:39Speaker 3: That AGAIN so i learned at a very young age
- 42:42Speaker 3: the importance of being a. Great teammate and growing up
- 42:45Speaker 3: with a brother who was born in the. Same year, My,
- 42:48Speaker 3: brother matt he's eleven months older, than me died of
- 42:51Speaker 3: als three. Years ago he was the one that taught
- 42:53Speaker 3: me more than anything else what it's like to be
- 42:56Speaker 3: a great teammate because we went to school together in
- 42:59Speaker 3: THE same i was his. YOUNGER brother i. NEEDED help
- 43:02Speaker 3: i was FOUR when i, started KINDERGARTEN when i played
- 43:05Speaker 3: high school baseball and everything else. With him he was
- 43:08Speaker 3: BETTER than, i was and he made sure his little
- 43:11Speaker 3: brother was taken care of no. Matter what THAT'S when
- 43:14Speaker 3: i learned what being a great teammate. Was about and
- 43:17Speaker 3: my Late brother matt Went To, catholic university and they
- 43:21Speaker 3: have named, an award an annual award that goes to
- 43:25Speaker 3: the senior on the team that is the. Best teammate
- 43:29Speaker 3: it's Called The Matt Kirkchin Ultimate. TEAMMATE award, i mean
- 43:34Speaker 3: how great of a tribute is that to a. Former
- 43:37Speaker 3: player they named an award, after you not because you're the,
- 43:40Speaker 3: best player even though he was a really, good player
- 43:43Speaker 3: but because he was the. ULTIMATE teammate i learned that
- 43:46Speaker 3: at a very, early Age and i've. Never forgotten.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Two more one of the great Things, about tim obviously
- 43:52Speaker 1: we've learned this through. This broadcast he can laugh. At
- 43:55Speaker 1: himself so let me ask you, This Question Tim, aaron
- 43:58Speaker 1: cebee is the impression of you has? Become legendary is
- 44:03Speaker 1: still the best one you've ever seen or has someone
- 44:05Speaker 1: else Topped The tim.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Kirkshan, Impressions Well aaron ceba's was probably the best one
- 44:13Speaker 3: because it was the, first one and Thanks to ravi
- 44:16Speaker 3: and our Mischievous Friend, tito frankcona they ambushed me on
- 44:20Speaker 3: the air with that IMPERSONATION and i did not know what,
- 44:24Speaker 3: was Coming and Tito Found aaron ceba and pretended like
- 44:28Speaker 3: he was interviewing me when it Was Actually. Aaron ceba
- 44:32Speaker 3: it was the stupidest television. In history and Our boss,
- 44:36Speaker 3: mike McQuaid not the easiest man to, talk To, SAID
- 44:40Speaker 3: tim i don't know if you don't, like this but
- 44:42Speaker 3: this is. Television GOLD so I Think aaron ceba was
- 44:46Speaker 3: still the best one and the kicker. THERE is i,
- 44:49Speaker 3: asked him like several, YEARS later, i said please tell
- 44:53Speaker 3: me that you can do. Other impersonations please tell me
- 44:57Speaker 3: that you Could Do Jack nicholson and, he, GOES no
- 45:00Speaker 3: i can only. Do you the only personation he does. Is,
- 45:06Speaker 3: ME now i. Must say BOONIE and I with rabbi
- 45:10Speaker 3: Were in Arizona And tim dillard one of the funniest
- 45:14Speaker 3: people in. The world he just walks onto the set
- 45:18Speaker 3: and starts to do, my horrible, horrendous voice and to
- 45:22Speaker 3: make it, more realistic he, crouches down so he's like
- 45:27Speaker 3: a really short guy talking with my. Terrible voice that
- 45:31Speaker 3: was one of the Dumbest things i've. EVER seen i laughed.
- 45:34Speaker 3: Out loud and. Last One, ryan dempster who has done
- 45:37Speaker 3: stand up comedy really, good picture did stand up comedy
- 45:41Speaker 3: once in. His life he did an Impersonation Of harry carey,
- 45:45Speaker 3: interviewing me and he did both of. The voices so he,
- 45:50Speaker 3: WOULD go i Can't Do. Harry carry he, would go Like,
- 45:53Speaker 3: hete tim where do you get all those? Steps from
- 45:56Speaker 3: and then he would do my. Terrible voice so he
- 45:59Speaker 3: carried On Conversation harry carry, and me and he did
- 46:04Speaker 3: both of. The voices that was the stupidest spring training of.
- 46:08Speaker 3: My life and people still still bring, it up and
- 46:12Speaker 3: it was like fifteen. Years ago it was, hilariously funny,
- 46:16Speaker 3: Because look, rabbi strite if you can't have a chuckle
- 46:20Speaker 3: with yourself at all, times anyway but especially when you're.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Covering baseball we ask, our players look hardest game in
- 46:28Speaker 3: the world, to play you better laugh your way through a.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Few things otherwise you're not gonna. Make it same thing goes.
- 46:33Speaker 3: For broadcaster, for writers you better not take yourself too
- 46:37Speaker 3: seriously because this game will eat you up and spit.
- 46:40Speaker 2: You out, oh man, So. GOOD tim i want to
- 46:43Speaker 2: get to our, last question and then we'll get to the.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Kitchen sing melanie has a. Great question this is getting a.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Little more let's go To the. Melanie question when it's
- 46:51Speaker 2: all said. And done how do you, want players coaches
- 46:54Speaker 2: and fans, To Remember Tim, kirchin.
- 46:58Speaker 3: Ah boy that. TO hardman i just want people to
- 47:02Speaker 3: look at me and RECOGNIZE that i always love, the
- 47:06Speaker 3: game and my love of the game is what carried.
- 47:10Speaker 3: ME through i am not some sort of. GREAT writer
- 47:14Speaker 3: i promise. You that as we've, ALL seen i have
- 47:17Speaker 3: one of the worst. Voices ever i'm three. FEET tall
- 47:20Speaker 3: i don't look very GOOD. On tv my forehead looks
- 47:24Speaker 3: like a. Five, HEAD now i got. GRAY hair i
- 47:26Speaker 3: got a lot of things working. Against me but my
- 47:29Speaker 3: love of the game has always always. Carried me so
- 47:33Speaker 3: as long as people look at me, and, say well
- 47:36Speaker 3: he cares about the game and he loves. The game
- 47:39Speaker 3: And when willie as Dies And hank aaron Dies and tom,
- 47:42Speaker 3: sever dies he's the GUY that i want to write.
- 47:45Speaker 3: THE obituary i feel like that is part of my
- 47:48Speaker 3: job to, make sure especially when, somebody's gone that somebody
- 47:52Speaker 3: explains this is how great the, player was because our
- 47:56Speaker 3: young people won't know unless an old man like me explain.
- 48:00Speaker 3: To Them so tim loved. The game that's that's the
- 48:03Speaker 3: most important message.
- 48:04Speaker 1: For, me, excellent excellent and he does love. The game
- 48:07Speaker 1: let's get to the kitchen. Sink questions justin you.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Asked him you are the kitchen, All right let's get
- 48:17Speaker 2: to the first, Question, Here, tim so who is the
- 48:19Speaker 2: most interesting person you've?
- 48:21Speaker 3: Ever interviewed, You know i've always Thought That tony gwinn
- 48:28Speaker 3: was so interesting in his, own right even though he
- 48:31Speaker 3: was just a master, of hitting his understanding of the
- 48:36Speaker 3: art of hitting was like No one i'd. Ever, MET
- 48:38Speaker 3: now i Talked To ted williams, about hitting and he
- 48:41Speaker 3: he's the most interesting man of. All TIME but i
- 48:43Speaker 3: didn't have enough time. With HIM but i would Sit
- 48:45Speaker 3: With tony gwynn and he would. TELL me i could
- 48:48Speaker 3: tell you hours of stories about sitting with him and
- 48:52Speaker 3: how he would explain what the art of hitting was.
- 48:54Speaker 3: All about he is absolutely he was absolutely Fascinating. And ravi,
- 48:59Speaker 3: you know when we, interview someone it's usually a question and.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Answer period when you sit Down With, tony gwynn it
- 49:05Speaker 3: immediately becomes a conversation. About baseball and as, a, reporter,
- 49:09Speaker 3: writer analyst, whatever broadcaster that's what we're trying to do
- 49:13Speaker 3: is get into a conversation rather than me. Interviewing.
- 49:17Speaker 1: You good next question on, The Kitchen saint tim after.
- 49:20Speaker 1: That one if you played for the back teas at
- 49:23Speaker 1: THIS Year's us Open At, shinnecock hills what would you?
- 49:26Speaker 3: Have, SHOT okay i used to be. At ten LAST
- 49:30Speaker 3: time i Played, WITH ravi I think i was a.
- 49:32Speaker 3: THOUSAND handicap i played so Badly and i'm still embarrassed.
- 49:36Speaker 3: About that so LET'S understand i used to be at
- 49:39Speaker 3: TEN if i Played at shinnecock from the. Back teas
- 49:43Speaker 3: so we're not raking, three footers we're not rolling the
- 49:46Speaker 3: ball in. The fairway we're playing. Every Shot and i'm
- 49:50Speaker 3: in the same Group As scottie scheffler and at some.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Other star i'm Not sure i'm going to be able
- 49:58Speaker 3: to take. It back so this IS a i who
- 50:01Speaker 3: used to be. At ten i'm probably at twenty now
- 50:04Speaker 3: And and i'm embarrassed. BY it I think i'm gonna
- 50:07Speaker 3: shoot one hundred and Seventy at Chittakot because i'm gonna
- 50:11Speaker 3: be so afraid of. THE pressure, i mean the place
- 50:15Speaker 3: is gonna be lyned where ON. National tv i've never
- 50:17Speaker 3: been in a trap, Like that i've never been on greens,
- 50:20Speaker 3: Like that i've never been in rough. Like That and
- 50:22Speaker 3: i'm gonna lose five strokes because i don't even know
- 50:24Speaker 3: the rules of the. Game properly i'm Gonna miss i'm
- 50:27Speaker 3: gonna mark a ball incorrectly and get a two. Shot
- 50:30Speaker 3: PENALTY so I think i'm GONNA get I think i'm
- 50:33Speaker 3: gonna shoot a one seventy something, like THAT and i
- 50:36Speaker 3: think maybe a twenty five handicap is going to shoot a.
- 50:40Speaker 3: TWO hundred a. Two hundred.
- 50:44Speaker 4: That's great let's go to the third. One here, so
- 50:47Speaker 4: yeah what did get Into the Hall Of?
- 50:48Speaker 3: Fame?
- 50:48Speaker 2: India, Man like obviously you've been in the game a.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Long time people think very highly.
- 50:53Speaker 4: Of you.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Your work that's a that's a body of work sort,
- 50:57Speaker 2: of accomplishment and it Never goes people can never take
- 51:01Speaker 2: that away.
- 51:01Speaker 4: From you what does that mean?
- 51:02Speaker 3: To, you well it's the greatest achievement of my professional
- 51:07Speaker 3: career and there will never be a. Close second and
- 51:10Speaker 3: THE day i made, MY speech ravi wrote the intro to,
- 51:14Speaker 3: my Speech and i'll never forget how poignant. THAT was
- 51:17Speaker 3: i almost started to CRY before i went. Up there
- 51:19Speaker 3: but this is how important. It was the DAY after
- 51:23Speaker 3: i won, THE award i got a call at eight
- 51:27Speaker 3: o'clock the next Morning From. Johnny Bench now i've already
- 51:30Speaker 3: cried my eyes Out because i've won. This, Award privately
- 51:34Speaker 3: i'm crying. Out loud And Then, johnny bench the greatest
- 51:37Speaker 3: catcher of, all time calls me the next morning and, He,
- 51:40Speaker 3: says tim welcome to. The club you're one. Of, us

- 51:47Speaker 3: i'm not one. Of them i'm a dinky. Sports writer
- 51:49Speaker 3: he's the greatest catcher of. All time but then his
- 51:52Speaker 3: voice gets very soft and, he says. Very poignantly, He,
- 51:55Speaker 3: goes tim it's moments like this that bring you back to.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Little League and i'm just about ready to, cry again and,
- 52:02Speaker 3: he said and let's, face it you could still fit
- 52:04Speaker 3: Into A. Little LEAGUE so i get Blasted By. Johnny

- 52:30Speaker 3: to look at. THAT lake i want you to think
- 52:32Speaker 3: about where, you are how you, got here and how
- 52:35Speaker 3: many people helped you. GET here i don't want you

- 53:44Speaker 3: once in, a game and then he went four years
- 53:47Speaker 3: without picking, off anyone and the next guy picked Off

- 55:18Speaker 3: sixty one homers and three hundred and sixty nine breakouts in.
- 55:23Speaker 3: HIS career i used that stat the. Other day i've
- 55:27Speaker 3: been using IT since i was seven because my father taught.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Me that but, more important he taught me to be a.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Great teammate he taught me to. Respect People my dad's
- 55:36Speaker 3: been mad at me twice in my, entire life and
- 55:38Speaker 3: BOTH and i was too young. TO understand i was
- 55:40Speaker 3: disrespectful to. An adult and that was the one line

- 55:49Speaker 3: Neighborhood people we are we are respectful to. Older people
- 55:54Speaker 3: and that's the lesson that he. Taught me so by a,
- 55:58Speaker 3: large margin my dad was the most most important per
- 56:00Speaker 3: and my mother was. The greatest don't get, me wrong
- 56:02Speaker 3: but my dad taught ME what i really needed to
- 56:06Speaker 3: know to get.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Through life justin back to that last story before we
- 56:11Speaker 1: say Goodbye. To tim so we're calling a. BASEBALL game

- 56:18Speaker 1: Eight degrees, it's Freezing and tim has very, thin blood
- 56:22Speaker 1: so he's cold when it's seventy. Degrees out and you've
- 56:25Speaker 1: listened to this hour and he's the most observant human
- 56:28Speaker 1: being on.
- 56:28Speaker 5: The planet he.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Remembers everything so we get Together and tim has two
- 56:35Speaker 1: gloves to keep his. Hands, warm well we take one
- 56:39Speaker 1: of the gloves and we give it to, a cameraman
- 56:43Speaker 1: and the cameraman is walking around the stadium and, you
- 56:47Speaker 1: know we're calling, the game so, there's action and then
- 56:50Speaker 1: every now and then we'll slip a shot in of
- 56:53Speaker 1: say somebody carrying, hot dogs and We stick tim's glove on.
- 56:57Speaker 5: The tray he never sees.
- 57:00Speaker 1: The glove we then moved the glove to, somebody's shoulder
- 57:04Speaker 1: and we take a shot of Somebody with tim's glove on.
- 57:08Speaker 1: The shoulder he never sees. The glove we must have
- 57:12Speaker 1: taken ten different shots of. His Glove and i'm in,
- 57:16Speaker 1: on it and THERE'S. An edwardo we're all in, on
- 57:20Speaker 1: it and he never sees his own GLOVE on tv
- 57:25Speaker 1: that we show ten different times to see if he's
- 57:28Speaker 1: going to pick up.
- 57:29Speaker 3: On it and about ten different times during, THE game,

- 57:51Speaker 3: do to be all. The time they would crush me on,
- 57:55Speaker 3: the air but it made for a much better broadcast
- 57:58Speaker 3: that we were back and forth and everybody knew we loved,
- 58:02Speaker 3: each other even though they made fun, of ME and i.
