Transcript
- 0:00Breaking news, breaking news, breaking news,
- 0:02breaking news, folks. The Bills have fired Sean
- 0:04McDermott. You already know how these episodes
- 0:06go. No intro, no outro. We're just going to get
- 0:09into the meat and potatoes of the situation.
- 0:11So here's the statement from Terry Pagula, owner
- 0:14of the Buffalo Bills, and I quote, Sean has done
- 0:17an admirable job of leading our football team
- 0:19for the past nine seasons, but I feel we are
- 0:21in need of a new structure within our leadership
- 0:23to give this organization the best opportunity
- 0:25to take our team to the next level. We owe that
- 0:28to our players and to Bills Mafia. Sean helped
- 0:31change the mindset of this organization and was
- 0:34instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial
- 0:36playoff team. I respect all the work, loyalty,
- 0:39and attention to detail he showed for this team
- 0:41and the community. I wish Sean, Jamie, and his
- 0:44family all the best. Moving forward, Brandon
- 0:47Bean will now serve as the president of football
- 0:49operations and general manager of the Buffalo
- 0:52Bills. Brandon will oversee all facets of our
- 0:55football operation, including the oversight of
- 0:58our coaching staff. I have full faith and have
- 1:00witnessed Brandon's outstanding leadership style
- 1:02and have confidence in his abilities to lead
- 1:04our organization. Bean will be leading the search
- 1:07for a new head coach and will be working directly
- 1:10with Pagula and Peter Guelli, excuse me if I
- 1:13butchered your last name, who will now serve
- 1:15as president of business operations during the
- 1:18interview and hiring process, end quote. So Sean
- 1:21McDermott's overall record was 98 -50. His playoff
- 1:24record is 8 -8. He won five consecutive divisional
- 1:28titles and he was 0 -3 in playoff games that
- 1:31went into overtime. Now, according to ESPN Research,
- 1:36The Bills have won at least 10 regular season
- 1:38games in seven consecutive seasons, which is
- 1:41tied for fifth in the Super Bowl era since 1966.
- 1:44However, they are the only team of those top
- 1:47six to have not made an appearance in the Super
- 1:50Bowl. The other teams, the Patriots, the 49ers,
- 1:53the Chiefs, the Colts, and the Cowboys. We all
- 1:57knew that the minute that that game was over,
- 1:59somebody was going to get fired. It was either
- 2:01going to be Brandon Bean, or it was going to
- 2:03be Sean McDermott, Or it was going to be both.
- 2:07Now, me personally, I would have chose both instead
- 2:09of just one or the other, which I'll explain
- 2:11in just a moment. But how is it that you lose
- 2:13a game that you know you could have won in a
- 2:16year where you're not facing Patrick Mahomes
- 2:18or Lamar Jackson or Joe Burrow or Justin Herbert?
- 2:21That's unacceptable. The time for excuses is
- 2:24out the window. It's either you're going to win
- 2:26the big game or you're not. But you continue
- 2:29to hit the same roadblock year after year after
- 2:33year, and you have nobody to blame but yourself.
- 2:36So how is it that the Patriots can go through
- 2:39what they've gone through within the past few
- 2:41years, get their act together, and now they look
- 2:44like the Patriots of old, while you continue
- 2:46to figure out how we're going to get to the Super
- 2:49Bowl? And you can't say that this year was difficult,
- 2:52because it wasn't. You literally had to go through
- 2:55Trevor Lawrence, which you essentially just steamrolled
- 2:58all the way into the end zone. You could have
- 3:01beaten the Broncos had Josh Allen not turned
- 3:03the ball over four times. So don't give me that
- 3:06junk. I don't want to hear it from no Bills player.
- 3:10I don't want to hear it from nobody that's getting
- 3:12paychecks from the Bills, Darren Arlovsky. I
- 3:15don't want to hear it from nobody this year.
- 3:17Because this was the year for you to win, and
- 3:20you didn't do it. Because of self -inflicted
- 3:24wounds. It's not because of nobody else's fault.
- 3:28It's not the ref's fault. It's not because of
- 3:31the catch or the pick. It's none of that. It's
- 3:34because you failed to meet expectations. When
- 3:38you're not producing, you have to go. That's
- 3:40just what it is. They gave you chance after chance
- 3:44after chance after chance. You're in a weak division.
- 3:49A division that has not gotten its act together
- 3:52in I don't know how long. It's only been you
- 3:55and the Patriots that have just been steamrolling
- 3:58the division. And you mean to tell me you guys
- 4:01still can't find a way to make it to the Super
- 4:03Bowl? Are we serious? So Bills fans, don't just
- 4:08say, oh, you guys are coming at us sideways.
- 4:10You're only coming at the Bills like this. Oh,
- 4:12no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I have the
- 4:14same energy for the Ravens fans. I have that
- 4:17same energy for the Bengals fans. I have the
- 4:20same energy for all of the other teams. Even
- 4:24in the Patriots dynasty, there were still people
- 4:27winning championships. Eli was winning championships.
- 4:30Ben won a championship. Drew Brees won a championship.
- 4:34What are we doing? Now I'm going to save the
- 4:36rest because we have to talk about the game,
- 4:38which that should be coming out fairly soon.
- 4:40Just give me some time because I have to re -watch
- 4:42the game and whatnot, okay? Now let's talk about
- 4:44Brandon Bean. Mr. Bean. The Bean Man. How is
- 4:49it that you're able to stay with this team, but
- 4:52the head coach goes, even though you guys were
- 4:55a package deal? So if you guys were a package
- 4:57deal, then you guys should be getting fired together.
- 5:01And the fact that you guys were able to give
- 5:04him a promotion. A promotion? Really? And this
- 5:09is the same smoke that I have with the other
- 5:11GMs who still have their job right now. How is
- 5:14it that Andrew Barron can trade away future picks
- 5:17and give the worst contract in sports history
- 5:20to Deshaun Watson, but still keep his job? How
- 5:23is it that Joe Shane can let his star running
- 5:26back go, but you're going to fight tooth and
- 5:28nail to give a deal to your quarterback who benefited
- 5:31off of Saquon Barkley being on the field? And
- 5:35you're going to say, who's going to pay a running
- 5:37back $12 million a year? But you keep your job.
- 5:40What are we doing? Can somebody please answer
- 5:43me? How is it that these guys are able to keep
- 5:45their jobs when they haven't been doing well
- 5:48in a production -based business? Can somebody
- 5:51please explain to me? Please explain to me. But
- 5:55here's the best part. When you compare the Bills
- 5:58roster to the Texans, to the Patriots, to the
- 6:01Broncos, even to the Jaguars before they faced
- 6:05them, the Bills had the worst roster. And you
- 6:08mean to tell me you're able to keep your job
- 6:11when you should have done more for Josh Allen?
- 6:14Are we serious? All Josh Allen had this year
- 6:17was Khalir Shakir, Brandon Cooks, and James Cook.
- 6:21That's it. Corlin Sutton, Marvin Mims, LeJuan
- 6:27Humphrey, R .J. Harvey, Evan Ingram, Drake May
- 6:31has Stephon Diggs, Mack Hollins, Keishon Boutier,
- 6:35Hunter Henry, two really good running backs.
- 6:38So the room for excuses on your poor drafting
- 6:41methods is out the window. You have to start
- 6:44giving Josh Allen weapons because at this point,
- 6:47Josh Allen is going to want to leave. All you
- 6:49did was just give him a rusty butter knife and
- 6:52a twig and say, you know what? Make it work.
- 6:55Now, when we talk about potential candidates
- 6:57for this job, there's not a lot of options out
- 6:59there. The options that are available are currently
- 7:02finalists for other jobs. So the question is
- 7:05this. What do the Bills do at this point? Do
- 7:07you call the Steelers and maybe inquire about
- 7:10Mike Tomlin? Do you inquire about Brian Dable?
- 7:12Do you inquire about making Joe Brady your head
- 7:15coach? Because at this point, you have a very
- 7:18tough decision that you have to make moving forward.
- 7:20So if I'm Brandon Bean, we're going in a meeting
- 7:23room, no phones, no technology of any sort. We're
- 7:26getting a whiteboard and we're hashing this thing
- 7:29out. I don't care how long it takes. I don't
- 7:31care how uncomfortable it gets. We need to hash
- 7:34this thing out now. Because where you guys are
- 7:36headed is a level of insanity that not even Cowboys
- 7:39fans have even reached. It's time for you to
- 7:43figure out what you're going to do moving forward.
- 7:45Because what we have right here is not working.
- 7:48And you have to ask yourself, if we make this
- 7:51move, will it get us over the hump? If we hire
- 7:53this person as our head coach, what is going
- 7:55to be his identity? Is he going to use the players
- 7:58that we have in a different way for better or
- 8:00for worse? What moves can we do to get over this
- 8:04hump? Who can get us over that hump? Do we have
- 8:07the structure right now to support getting over
- 8:09the hump? These are the uncomfortable conversations
- 8:12that have to be asked every single day in order
- 8:16for you guys to get an idea of what you guys
- 8:19need to do to get to a championship. So if I'm
- 8:21the Bills, I'm either choosing Joe Brady or Brian
- 8:24Dable because both of them played a pivotal role
- 8:26in developing Josh Allen. On top of that, if
- 8:29you go after an offensive -minded head coach,
- 8:31they might have an eye for talent that you don't
- 8:33have. See, these are the type of things that
- 8:36people don't talk about when choosing a head
- 8:38coach. But these are the things that need to
- 8:40be talked about in this moment. Because you already
- 8:43have the franchise quarterback. All you have
- 8:45to do is just build around him. If you make a
- 8:48trade for maybe an A .J. Brown, for instance,
- 8:51or maybe a Jalen Waddell, that's a good start
- 8:53right there. You can no longer take these crazy
- 8:56swings and think that you're not going to have
- 8:58any backlash from it. Case in point, you guys
- 9:01signing Von Miller to that crazy contract after
- 9:04he only played a couple games with the Rams.
- 9:07Granted, he played a pivotal role in the Rams
- 9:10winning the Super Bowl, but that doesn't mean
- 9:12that you give him this crazy contract. One more
- 9:15thing I have to talk about then I'll end the
- 9:16episode. Of all the vacancies that we have right
- 9:19now, which one do you think is the best one?
- 9:22Because me personally, I still believe it's the
- 9:25Ravens. And the reason why I say that is because
- 9:28you still have Lamar. You still have Derrick
- 9:31Henry, Rashad Bateman, Zay Flowers, Mark Andrews,
- 9:33Mike Green, Kyle Hamilton, Roquan Smith. But
- 9:36when we look at the Bills job, however, you have
- 9:38Josh Allen, James Cook, Khalir Shakir, Dawson
- 9:41Knox, Gregory Russo, Landon Jackson, Deion Walker,
- 9:45TJ Sanders. The point that I'm trying to make
- 9:47is... Both teams are really good opportunities.
- 9:50It's just a matter of what's your flavor. But
- 9:52I guess we just have to wait and see what happens.
- 9:55But I'm going to end this episode here. If you
- 9:56guys like what you're listening, please, please,
