- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Mike Chrispino,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Dan Hurley a little later on Solo ball will be
- 0:06Speaker 1: joining us as the Huskies come into this show riding
- 0:10Speaker 1: a seven game winning streak and winning the opener in
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Big East at home the other night against Butler.
- 0:20Speaker 1: But coach, a lot of things to talk about because
- 0:22Speaker 1: this season starts rolling and you had that stretch of
- 0:26Speaker 1: you know, top forty competition, six games, did well there
- 0:30Speaker 1: only lost one time. I guess let's start there. Where
- 0:34Speaker 1: do you think or what did you think you learned
- 0:36Speaker 1: about the team over the course of that grinder of
- 0:40Speaker 1: a schedule.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We're playing neutral.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Sites at Kansas, all these places, and you know, you
- 0:46Speaker 1: had a bunch of transfers coming in, you had freshmen playing,
- 0:49Speaker 1: you had a lot of things going on. But I
- 0:51Speaker 1: know you found out some things about this club that
- 0:54Speaker 1: I think were probably made you kind of happy.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I just think you find out that.
- 1:00Speaker 4: You know that you got a shot with the team,
- 1:02Speaker 4: that the team, uh, you know, it's got the potential.
- 1:05Speaker 4: You know the potential quality. You know that that you
- 1:08Speaker 4: could be the potential is there to be good enough
- 1:10Speaker 4: on offense, to be good enough on defense to be
- 1:13Speaker 4: a good enough rebounding team, you know, have enough depth,
- 1:16Speaker 4: you know, and and.
- 1:17Speaker 3: All those things. So I think, uh, you know, when
- 1:19Speaker 3: you obviously.
- 1:21Speaker 4: There's a lot of improving the dude, there's a lot
- 1:22Speaker 4: of improving to do, you know, for I think for
- 1:26Speaker 4: most teams. But yeah, I think you just you start
- 1:28Speaker 4: to believe that your team, you know, you feel a
- 1:30Speaker 4: lot differently, you know, this December than last December.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's interesting you were talking about depth.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Obviously you knew coming in you had some good players,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you had some good returning players. You had a couple
- 1:44Speaker 1: of juniors that you know, hunt around, stuck around, trying
- 1:47Speaker 1: to improve. And I think the last two games was
- 1:49Speaker 1: kind of significant for Jalen Stewart and for Jaden Ross.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Those two guys who played some minutes last year but
- 1:56Speaker 1: this year getting more significant time. They really impact did
- 2:00Speaker 1: these last two games. I mean, Texas is a really
- 2:02Speaker 1: good team coming in and then Butler riding high coming
- 2:05Speaker 1: into People's Bank Arena, and both of those guys Jalen Stewart,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Jade and Ross, it really had major impacts in winning
- 2:12Speaker 1: those games.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean there's an obviously there's a reason why
- 2:16Speaker 5: we believe in them. And there's a reason why you know,
- 2:19Speaker 5: we we've we valued them and and uh you know
- 2:22Speaker 5: and and uh you know, they're they're they're young men
- 2:25Speaker 5: that we're we've got, you know, just a deep connection
- 2:28Speaker 5: too from the recruiting process and uh, you know, in
- 2:31Speaker 5: in an era where where people don't stay together and
- 2:36Speaker 5: develop together, and it's you know, it's it's it's pretty
- 2:40Speaker 5: cool too, uh uh to have those guys with us
- 2:43Speaker 5: and and starting uh you know, to really see that
- 2:46Speaker 5: it paid dividends.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Uh, you know, dividends for both men. You know, they're
- 2:52Speaker 4: uh you know, they're only a little bit midway through
- 2:54Speaker 4: their career with us.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Uh at Yukon.
- 2:57Speaker 4: So uh, I feel like with both those guys, the
- 2:59Speaker 4: best basketball's ahead of them. They play incredibly important positions
- 3:04Speaker 4: today in basketball, the the wing players with versatility, defensive
- 3:09Speaker 4: ability versus offensive ability, they're uh, they're they're as valuable
- 3:15Speaker 4: or almost more valuable than any other position. So uh
- 3:18Speaker 4: and they're great guys. I mean, they're Yukon guys, uh
- 3:21Speaker 4: through and through.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And one thing that Jalen did in the Texas game,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and his size really is helpful at times isn't it
- 3:29Speaker 1: when you got to deal with some muscle against you. Uh,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Jalen seems to prove that he can. He can mess around.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He can he can mix it up if he has
- 3:37Speaker 1: to when teams are coming at you with with strength.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean teams that have a you know, a
- 3:43Speaker 4: three four you know four three type of guys, or
- 3:47Speaker 4: if you need to switch ball screens and put.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Them on the center. You know, he's Uh.
- 3:51Speaker 4: If you go back to last year, I think he
- 3:53Speaker 4: was uh, the job he did on Eric Dixon on
- 3:56Speaker 4: the road last year, it was was probably you know,
- 3:59Speaker 4: one of our best uh, you know, defensive performances individually.
- 4:03Speaker 4: You know, he ended up you end up getting you know,
- 4:06Speaker 4: getting good numbers, but you know a majority of those
- 4:08Speaker 4: were at the free throw line.
- 4:09Speaker 3: But he uh, yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 4: He's he's flashed at potential and you know he's just
- 4:14Speaker 4: he's just such an important part at both ends of
- 4:17Speaker 4: the court.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And and you know, listening to him after that Texas game,
- 4:21Speaker 1: I thought it was great to hear, you know, when
- 4:24Speaker 1: a teammate talks about winning first, not about what he did.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Uh.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And I think that's most of your guys are like that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I mean, I think you built that into this crew
- 4:32Speaker 1: with their DNA. It's got to be gratifying for you
- 4:35Speaker 1: to hear that, right, I mean, that's what you want
- 4:38Speaker 1: from your players. And then when they come on afterwards
- 4:40Speaker 1: and tell the rest of the world, well, this is
- 4:42Speaker 1: what matters to me winning for my teammates.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Uh, that's just a great thing to hear.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, just with Jalen, it's like getting you know,
- 4:51Speaker 4: I think that the person that you know, I ended
- 4:53Speaker 4: up talking to a lot during Jalen's recruitment was his grandfather, Robert,
- 4:58Speaker 4: who you know, you know, he's a really good man,
- 5:02Speaker 4: and I played a pivotal role in Jalen's uh you know,
- 5:06Speaker 4: development as a man and his uh you know, is
- 5:09Speaker 4: his character, his moral code, uh, you know, his his
- 5:12Speaker 4: his his heart for others.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Uh.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Eventually, I think, you know, Jalen is going to you know,
- 5:19Speaker 4: become the player, you know, the marquee player, the the
- 5:24Speaker 4: the leading player on the team that that's coming for him.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Uh you know, uh, you know, before his career is
- 5:29Speaker 4: over here in college with us. But you know, i'd say,
- 5:32Speaker 4: right now, you know, if you're the you know, he's
- 5:35Speaker 4: going to play starter minutes. You know, he's uh, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 4: he's one of our most impactful players. And if he
- 5:42Speaker 4: keeps moving on the trajectories moving on, Uh, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 4: he's going to have a chance to to be a
- 5:47Speaker 4: championship player again here and have a chance to play
- 5:49Speaker 4: in the NBA.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, he's averaging about twenty three minutes a game Jalen
- 5:53Speaker 1: Stewart junior forward about seven points for rebounds and think
- 5:58Speaker 1: about him. To coach, he seems to get him at
- 6:00Speaker 1: the right time, you know what I mean. He seems
- 6:02Speaker 1: to be one of those guys that comes up with
- 6:03Speaker 1: a play when you really need it.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Maybe he takes the charge. I don't know, he does stuff.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, he gets us off too in games.
- 6:09Speaker 4: I think, you know, the the benefit of him starting
- 6:12Speaker 4: was you get us, uh, you know, get us off
- 6:15Speaker 4: the fast starts, you know, But I do there's a
- 6:20Speaker 4: you know, there's a next level from a cardio standpoint
- 6:23Speaker 4: that we got to get Jay stew too, because he did.
- 6:27Speaker 3: You know, we tend to kind of get fatigued.
- 6:28Speaker 4: In games and run out of a little bit of
- 6:31Speaker 4: gas in the second half. So being able to bring
- 6:33Speaker 4: him in off the bench, uh, you know where he
- 6:36Speaker 4: could play in in in three four minute spurts, uh
- 6:40Speaker 4: to the max, you know, sit for you know, sit
- 6:42Speaker 4: for two minutes, get back in there.
- 6:45Speaker 3: I think, allow him to be you know, his most efficient.
- 6:49Speaker 1: That's Jalen Stewart and Jade Ross who helped you get
- 6:51Speaker 1: to eleven and one beating Butler.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Uh, I'll tell you what.
- 6:56Speaker 1: We we know he's a good defender, we know he
- 6:58Speaker 1: can fly, and we know, oh he's skies above the rim.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But when he does these things, I mean the splash
- 7:05Speaker 1: plays fifteen ninety five are in that building other night,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and that got things going, I felt.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Like yeah, I mean, uh, you know you could see it.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And that's what we've seen privately for you know, for
- 7:18Speaker 4: a couple of years with Jay Ross. I mean, unquestionably,
- 7:22Speaker 4: the talent is there. I think it's all about just
- 7:24Speaker 4: confidence and opportunity, you know, and I think, uh yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 4: we're going to keep giving him the opportunity to keep
- 7:32Speaker 4: keep growing, keep developing.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But you see it. I mean it's uh three and
- 7:37Speaker 3: D potential athletic ability.
- 7:40Speaker 4: The guy could pass. He's smart. Uh you know, he's
- 7:44Speaker 4: tougher than you think. You know this guy, uh, you
- 7:47Speaker 4: know there's another guy that again he's you know he's
- 7:49Speaker 4: got a chance to be an NBA player, and he's
- 7:52Speaker 4: a little bit halfway through his career here.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and for guys like me that watched every game,
- 7:57Speaker 1: whether it's pro or college.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You can see it. He's he's got that athleticism.
- 8:01Speaker 1: He had those three dunks the other night that were
- 8:04Speaker 1: you know, straight out of the NBA. I mean you
- 8:05Speaker 1: see that fifteen times a game in an NBA game.
- 8:08Speaker 1: But you're right, you've got to be in position to
- 8:11Speaker 1: make those kind of plays. And I don't know, how
- 8:13Speaker 1: do you rate the smartness of a player just by
- 8:16Speaker 1: what he can do in games or do you see
- 8:17Speaker 1: it in practice? How do you rate that kind of stuff?
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you see it.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I mean he's got that athletic pop and you know,
- 8:24Speaker 4: just he's a very intelligent guy.
- 8:27Speaker 3: And yeah, he's a really good communicator and he can
- 8:30Speaker 3: you know, he.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Can problem solve out on the court, and he can
- 8:33Speaker 4: identify things he's seen on film and he doesn't make
- 8:37Speaker 4: the same mistake twice, and you know, he knows what
- 8:40Speaker 4: we're doing for multiple positions.
- 8:42Speaker 1: All Right, that's Dan Hurley, Mike Chris Bano back after
- 8:46Speaker 1: a quick time out, we'll get into what happened on
- 8:48Speaker 1: the opener of the Big East as Yukon took on
- 8:51Speaker 1: Butler just a couple of days ago. Back with more
- 8:54Speaker 1: of the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Liarfield,
