- 1:23You're not alone in this anymore.
- 1:26Well, on today's episode, how to take meds on time every time, my
- 1:30life saving trick. This is incredible to me, but
- 1:35it's cool. But you know this Parkinson's is
- 1:38relentless. We all know that.
- 1:40And when your medication timing is off, even just a little bit,
- 1:43it feels like the whole day goes sideways.
- 1:45Well, early on in my journey, I was taking levodopa like, I
- 1:48don't know, four times a day, right?
- 1:501222 pills, one pill, 1 1/2 pills, four times a day.
- 1:54Simple, right? Except I forget.
- 1:57I'd get busy, I'd miss it by 30 minutes and then an hour and
- 2:01then bam. Stiff, shaky, off, slurring
- 2:06brain fog, can't concentrate. I'd look at my wife and say I
- 2:11feel like I've been hit by a truck.
- 2:14Oh wait, did I miss my meds? That sound familiar?
- 2:19So I knew I had to get serious about timing.
- 2:21Because timing isn't just about convenience, it's about
- 2:24survival. I can't express you enough how
- 2:28much timing is so important. So let's first let's talk about
- 2:34what didn't work. OK?
- 2:38Phone alarms. I'd snooze them.
- 2:40I'd be in the middle of our conversation, I'd swipe away.
- 2:42I'd think, oh gosh, OK, I'll take that.
- 2:44As soon as I'm ready or as soon as I finish this call or as soon
- 2:47as I let go of my, my, my phone. I'll take it then.
- 2:51OK, sticky notes. Cute idea, but I got so used to
- 2:57seeing them I stopped seeing them.
- 2:58You know what I mean. My brain not reliable.
- 3:03Parkinson's, brain fog plus a busy life equals missed doses.
- 3:09I needed something. I needed something physical,
- 3:11something visual, something that lived with my pills, not just on
- 3:15my phone. And here is something that
- 3:19changed everything. The pill bottle timer cap, I'll
- 3:24show you one here in a second. I brought mine down with me.
- 3:26It's a cap that fits onto a standard pill bottle and it
- 3:29shows you how long it's been since you last opened your pill
- 3:32bottles. So in other words, if I open it
- 3:34at 8:00 AM and I take my pills right, and then I look at it at
- 3:3811:30, it would say, you know, 3 hours and 30 seconds, and that's
- 3:42how long it's been since that pill bottle was open.
- 3:45In other words, since I took it, there's no guessing.
- 3:48There's no wondering, did I take it or not?
- 3:51Now trying to remember with brain fog in full effect.
- 3:56OK, there's no more of that. You don't have to worry about
- 3:58it. And this is like a $15 cap,
- 4:01right? And it's probably saved me
- 4:03hundreds of hours of misery and probably hundreds of apologies
- 4:06to my wife too. So the other thing I do as well
- 4:11is, is I always have a timer. So I don't use an alarm.
- 4:14I don't set an alarm for a certain specific time, but I, I
- 4:18set a timer again, I take my meds every three hours.
- 4:20So when I take my pills, I hit my timer.
- 4:24I say I set a timer for 30 minutes or for three hours.
- 4:27But what's really wild is again, that timer, it doesn't always
- 4:32work for me. If I'm busy, I'm busy.
- 4:34So let me tell you exactly how I use this pill timer, this pill
- 4:40top, pill top pill brain fog. So I keep 2 bottles, right?
- 4:46One for my home and one for my bag when I'm out.
- 4:49And each of them now has its own timer cap.
- 4:52I glance at it every few hours to see if it's been 3 hours yet
- 4:56and it's time to take the next one.
- 4:58And again, no guessing. And there's no fiddling with
- 5:00apps. There's no fiddling with like
- 5:02trying to set timers on it. It's just I literally open it
- 5:05actually, I'll show you. So this is my time.
- 5:07This is my timer here, so I'm just checking out what it says
- 5:10first. So it says I took my meds.
- 5:12It says the last. So here's my pill bottle.
- 5:15So the one I bought and there's tons of them out there.
- 5:17You know, do do what works for you.
- 5:18But the one I bought came with its own bottle, which I fill up
- 5:22OK. But this is also a standard cap,
- 5:24so it'll fit on most caps that you have.
- 5:29You know that you get from the pharmacy wherever you get them.
- 5:31So if you can see that timer on here, I'm going to turn it.
- 5:34I'm not really great at this guys.
- 5:35I'm sorry. So and if you're listening to
- 5:38the podcast, what I'm doing is I'm holding my bottle up and I'm
- 5:40just showing the timer and it says 58 minutes.
- 5:43So 58 minutes ago I took my pills.
- 5:46That's the last time I opened this up.
- 5:48Now, if you take more than one pill at the same time, you don't
- 5:53necessarily need to have a different cap for each of those
- 5:55because you just use your, your main one, your main, your main
- 5:58go to pill bottle or pill cap should be your levodopa.
- 6:01So in other words, I take primaprixole on my very on my
- 6:04first 3 doses. I take one or one Primaprixole
- 6:07with my first 3 doses. So I don't need another timer on
- 6:11my Primaprixole because I know I opened this and I opened my
- 6:13Primaprixole. Does that make sense?
- 6:17And here's a little tip. If I do take a dose early
- 6:20because of like I'm having a heavy protein meal or I'm doing
- 6:22like yard work, or I know that I'm going to need some extra, I
- 6:26reset the cab so I don't double dose by mistake.
- 6:30OK, so in other words, I, if I have my extra, you know, pills
- 6:34in my pocket, I just pop the cap and shut it back off and it
- 6:37works. It really, really works.
- 6:39Now it's not perfect, but it's a way that keeps, what am I trying
- 6:44to say? It's not perfect, but it keeps
- 6:45me way more consistent than anything else I've ever tried
- 6:50and it's incredible. So let me tell you a story.
- 6:54So a couple of years ago, I had a full day of meetings,
- 6:56back-to-back Zoom meetings and then an in person speaking
- 6:58event. And I would, I was focused,
- 7:00right? I was energized.
- 7:01I was in the zone. Then around like 2:30, I hit a
- 7:05wall. You know, I started feeling
- 7:07foggy and tight and sluggish and I'm like, what's going
- 7:10happening? What's happening?
- 7:11I sat down hard, too hard. And I realized I hadn't taken my
- 7:16midday dose. I totally had forgotten it.
- 7:19I was so busy, I totally forgot it.
- 7:21And you know what? That 20 minute delay cost me the
- 7:24rest of the afternoon. Now I got through the event, but
- 7:27I felt like I was dragging a backpack full of bricks
- 7:30everywhere I went. And that's when I said never
- 7:34again. And that's when the pill cap
- 7:37became a non negotiable for me. It's insanely incredible for me
- 7:42though. Here's a few more metrics that
- 7:44help. So water first.
- 7:48I take a big glass of water with every dose.
- 7:50It helps absorb the pills faster and it gets things moving right.
- 7:55I set a protein window. I try to avoid eating heavy
- 7:57protein meals 30 minutes before or after my levodopa.
- 8:01So I plan, but I don't plan my I don't plan my pills around what
- 8:07I eat. I just, you know, I realize if
- 8:09it's like, I don't know, I'm just throwing this out there.
- 8:11If it's 5:00, let's say, if I usually eat at 5:00 and for some
- 8:16reason, you know, based on my schedule for the day, I've just
- 8:18taken my pills around 5:00. Well, then I'm just going to
- 8:21delay dinner by 30 minutes, you know, and but I don't, I also
- 8:25don't, I don't get stressed out about it.
- 8:28It's not like, Oh my God, I can't eat that chicken.
- 8:30I can't eat that chicken. I just took my pills like 27
- 8:33minutes ago. I just, it's just again, just
- 8:35trick some things I use, right? If it works that day, it works
- 8:38that day, but I don't, I don't beat myself up trying to make
- 8:42sure I, I hit that meal. And I've had other people in the
- 8:45comments ask about, you know, do you plan my meals around, Do you
- 8:48plan your meals around your levodopa?
- 8:49No, I really don't. I, I don't.
- 8:52All I do is I know my, my primaprixole, my third dose of
- 8:57primaprixole with my levodopa usually hits around, I don't
- 9:00know, depending on what time I woke up because again, every
- 9:03three hours, maybe like noon one between noon and 1:00 and 2:00
- 9:07is when I take it. And I know with that one, if I
- 9:09have an empty stomach, I sometimes feel like dizzy and
- 9:12stuff. So I always make sure I have a
- 9:13muffin or cookie or something around me.
- 9:16But you know, that's how I deal with that.
- 9:19And here's and then another tip is to keep extra doses on hand.
- 9:22Always carry it just in case stash.
- 9:25I have just in case stashes in my car, my coat pocket, my
- 9:28backpack on my desk over here up on my dresser just in case.
- 9:33I always just have that so I don't have to go searching for
- 9:36it. And maybe it's just me, but I
- 9:39thank the pill when I take it and it's just mental gratitude.
- 9:42I go, you know, hey, thanks old friend, let's do this.
- 9:45We got this. We got this.
- 9:47So if you're struggling with medication timing, let me say
- 9:50this to you. It's not your fault.
- 9:51You're not lazy, you're not forgetful.
- 9:53You're managing a full time neurological disorder.
- 9:57Give yourself grace, but also give yourself tools.
- 9:59Whether it's a timer cap, whether it's a smartwatch alarm,
- 10:02whatever works for you. The point is, don't go through
- 10:06this alone. Don't just tough it out.
- 10:08Tools exist and so do people who care.
- 10:11So this little cap, it's a game changer and I'd recommend it to
- 10:15anyone. And there is a link to the one I
- 10:17got in the description, but the one I got, I think it came with
- 10:192-2 lids and two bottles. There's some 5 packs, there's
- 10:23some bigger packs, some smaller packs.
- 10:25All I would say though is there's one that you actually
- 10:27accept the time on here and what not and I would avoid that one,
- 10:31right? You don't want something more
- 10:33complicated, just want something very, very simple to look at.
- 10:36Hey, when was the last time this pill bottle was open again?
- 10:38One hour, 1 minute ago. One hour, 1 minute ago.
- 10:41I know Hey, I'm taking my meds in two hours or I guess an hour
- 10:45and 59 minutes. But anyway, the link is in the
- 10:48description if you want to check it out.
- 10:49And again, this isn't a sponsored video.
- 10:51It's just something that I use every single day and it's been
- 10:53an absolute game changer to me. So how about you?
- 10:57You got a Med hack? Share it in the comments.
