- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and with me is Luna. Luna: Hey everyone! So Lucas, I am still at the gym from our last episode. I just finished my workout, and now I need a towel. Lucas: Perfect timing, because today we are going to practice exactly that: asking for a towel. Let's start with the most important phrase: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Great! Ich brauche means I need, and ein Handtuch is a towel. So literally I need a towel. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. That's pretty straightforward. Lucas: Exactly. Now imagine you are at the gym and you don't know where the towels are. You can ask: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Where are the towels? Lucas: Right. Wo means where, sind is are, die Handtücher is the plural of Handtuch. So Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? I think I'd say that a lot. Lucas: You would. Now let's try a more polite version. If you want to ask someone specifically, you can say: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? That's formal, right? Lucas: Yes. Haben Sie is the formal way to say do you have. So Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? means Do you have a towel for me? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Got it. Lucas: And if someone points you in the right direction, they might say: Die Handtücher sind dort. That means The towels are over there. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. So dort means over there. Lucas: Exactly. And finally, a simple request: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Can I have a towel? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? That's very direct but polite. Lucas: Yeah, it's common. Let's practice all five phrases together. Repeat after me: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Good. Lucas: Now let's imagine a little scene. You walk up to the front desk and say: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: The staff member says: Die Handtücher sind dort. You look and see them. Luna: Then I could say: Danke! Or maybe Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? just to confirm. Lucas: Exactly. And they would say: Ja, natürlich. So you've got your towel. Let's do one more round of repetition. Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben?
