Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll
- 0:22everyone. OK, a bit of a scheduling
- 0:25update. I am not going to be doing a
- 0:27Friday mini for you guys tomorrow.
- 0:29I'm so sorry. But one of the services that we
- 0:32provide here at Centennial is we do corporate podcast production.
- 0:35So it's for brands and corporations that want to build
- 0:39out in house podcasts. They're not like part of our
- 0:41network. We don't sell ads against it.
- 0:43It's just us working behind the scenes to help them bring an in
- 0:46house podcast to life. So for the past two months we
- 0:49have been working with one of our favorite clients to build
- 0:51them out their own in house podcast.
- 0:54It is launching in two weeks and it's an interview podcast.
- 0:57And so it just so happens that like when the guests could do
- 1:01interviews, it was like all this week.
- 1:04So we are so under the pump this week and I have so much work to
- 1:08catch up on tomorrow. And I also need to record the
- 1:11deep dive because there is going to be a new deep dive next
- 1:13Friday. So I need to prioritize the deep
- 1:15dive and catching up on my work. So there will be no Friday mini
- 1:19tomorrow. I'm sorry, but I am also going
- 1:22to be doing mini tech scroll next Wednesday, Wednesday,
- 1:24because Annabelle is out of office on Wednesday.
- 1:27So you guys will still get me. Actually, you'll get me five
- 1:30days a week next week. So there you go.
- 1:31It makes that for it. Anyways, as always, Please
- 1:34remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 1:36Please Spotify star rate US. I can see you guys are rating us
- 1:39and I love it. I do know that to Spotify star
- 1:42rate, you need to like listen to a certain amount of minutes, I
- 1:46think per episode or per show. I mean, so please listen for a
- 1:49couple minutes. So you could Spotify star rate
- 1:51US, leave us an Apple review to us on YouTube, buy us a coffee
- 1:56if you feel so inclined. It means so much to us.
- 1:58Every single dollar goes back into the business.
- 2:01And let's get into the stories for today.
- 2:04So the first story that I have for you guys, of course, is that
- 2:08the X Try Guys star Ned Fulmer is back.
- 2:13He has launched a new podcast following his cheating scandal.
- 2:17So Ned Fullmer is back in the public eye.
- 2:19And honestly, people are not down South.
- 2:21For a refresh, Ned was part of the popular YouTube group The
- 2:24Try Guys. He was married to a woman named
- 2:26Ariel, and he built a bit of a personal brand around that
- 2:30relationship. He really branded himself as a
- 2:33wife guy. And that image was shattered in
- 2:362022 when he was exposed for having an affair with one of his
- 2:40staff named Alex. The affair was exposed when
- 2:43photos of Ned kissing his employee Alex started
- 2:46circulating the Internet. And Ariel, to make matters
- 2:49worse, also worked at the Try Guys, so she was also colleagues
- 2:55with the woman. Within days of these photos
- 2:57emerging, he was dropped from the Try Guys and Internet users
- 3:01and fans really celebrated how seriously the group took this
- 3:06whole situation, especially since it wasn't just a cheating
- 3:09scandal. It obviously also was presumably
- 3:13like an HR violation, given that Ned was the boss of the woman
- 3:17that he was having an affair with.
- 3:18And because of Ned's image and because of, you know, how messy
- 3:22it was with the cheating and the HR of it all, this blew the fuck
- 3:26up. I'm sure you guys remember we
- 3:27were doing the podcast when it happened and we reported on it,
- 3:30I think in viral news because it was such a big deal at the time.
- 3:33Like this was. I mean, this was definitely not
- 3:36scandal level, but it was huge. Like every corner of the
- 3:39Internet was talking about it in some capacity.
- 3:42So Ned essentially disappeared from the Internet after this,
- 3:45but he has now returned with a new podcast called Rock Bottom
- 3:49in which he plans to interview people about their lowest
- 3:52moments and how they got through them.
- 3:54First of all, OK, this podcast concept I think is right.
- 3:58Like, I am very interested in hearing stories like this.
- 4:02I'm interested in hearing from people that have gone through
- 4:04major cancellations if that's, you know, part of the guess.
- 4:06Like I'm interested in hearing what it is like going through
- 4:10those rock bottom moments. However, Ned hosting this
- 4:13podcast as if he wasn't like directly responsible for his own
- 4:18rock bottom moment is so like unaware of him.
- 4:22It's so unhinged. So upon the launch of this new
- 4:25podcast yesterday, he also did an interview with people.
- 4:29He told people, quote, it's pretty well known that I was
- 4:31presenting myself as a wife guy who talked about his adorable
- 4:34relationship. It was something fans seem to
- 4:36resonate with and I leaned in consciously.
- 4:39It certainly was a part of my life.
- 4:41I understand that. That's why it was such a big
- 4:42scandal because it's ironic and it feels like a rug pull to
- 4:45people. That must have been really
- 4:47painful and devastating to the viewers.
- 4:50Was it really painful and devastating to the viewers?
- 4:52I can't. I OK, you guys are going to see
- 4:54why. I just like don't believe
- 4:55anything he said. I'm going to put some clips with
- 4:57a podcast in here. But like, I just, I cannot
- 5:00believe how he acted in the first episode, OK.
- 5:05In this article to Ariel made it clear she has not forgiven Ned
- 5:09for the affair. She said forgiveness is not her
- 5:11goal, more about like trust, clear boundaries, and integrity.
- 5:15Given that she and Ned are like obviously working on the
- 5:19relationship for the sake of their kids.
- 5:21So let's get into the podcast. The first episode was actually a
- 5:25sit down with Ariel and here are some of the big takeaways #1 Ned
- 5:29and Ariel are no longer romantically linked so I guess
- 5:32that was unclear until now. They have separated.
- 5:36Ariel said she found out about the cheating scandal from a fan
- 5:40who sent her the photo. I can't imagine how horrible
- 5:43that is. You know who also found out
- 5:44about their cheating scandal through a fan DM photo?
- 5:48Lala Kent. It wasn't directly to her, but a
- 5:50fan had apparently DM D Katie Maloney from Vanderpump Rules as
- 5:53well. Of course friends with Lala
- 5:55photos of Randall with women and that is how they found that out.
- 5:59It's pretty wild that famous people, even if they're not like
- 6:03a list, like even if it's Ned Fulmer from the Try Guys and
- 6:06Randall Emmett from I don't even know what he's from.
- 6:09I mean, he's from Vanderpump Rules, but he's also like a
- 6:11disgraced producer from Fofty fame.
- 6:14If you guys know, you know, it doesn't matter.
- 6:17You still have so many eyeballs on you.
- 6:19Chances are people are going to recognize you and you're
- 6:21cheating in public. It's so wild.
- 6:22I wonder if sometimes they want to get caught.
- 6:24That just crossed my mind. I feel like maybe sometimes that
- 6:27is the goal. Maybe even if it's like
- 6:28subconsciously. So yes, Ariel said she found out
- 6:32from a fan who sent her a photo and she was initially unable to
- 6:34process what she saw. And Ned said ultimately the
- 6:37scandal force him to re evaluate his mental health and how he
- 6:41presents himself online. OK, so fans are not having this.
- 6:46There are a few main pieces of feedback.
- 6:48Number one, Ned comes off like really bad in this just like
- 6:53removed from the emotional toll that this has had on Ariel.
- 6:58And I don't know, like to me, he seemed uninterested in taking
- 7:02accountability. Like, he doesn't really buy what
- 7:04he's saying, kind of. Not only did you having an
- 7:06affair, it shattered our marriage, but it also all of
- 7:10that guilt and shame. You like hoisted that on me,
- 7:15like you gave that to me, and now we have to carry that around
- 7:17for the rest of my life. I don't think it's fair that as
- 7:23a society you're put in that position.
- 7:25It's certainly not true and no, it's not something that I
- 7:32imagined as I was doing that. I think none of it was if you if
- 7:38you really like let it sink in just how much you're hurting
- 7:41your partner and how devastating it is.
- 7:44Like how could? You do that.
- 7:47And I mean, I know you could argue that it's going to appear
- 7:51differently when he's talking about it publicly on camera,
- 7:54like how he feels about all this.
- 7:55Like maybe they've worked through all this in therapy and
- 7:57he's done his own inner work and stuff.
- 7:59But at the end of the day, like he also chose to sit on camera
- 8:03and do this long form discussion with his wife about this thing
- 8:06that he did to her in order to monetize her pain, you know, and
- 8:12like bring himself back into the public eye.
- 8:14So I don't know, I think that was put on full display for us
- 8:19to judge, in my opinion. I also saw people say that they
- 8:23judged Ariel for doing this interview and questioned why she
- 8:27would let him essentially monetize off her pain.
- 8:29But then given how poorly he came off in the interview,
- 8:33people were like maybe she knew that he wouldn't come off good
- 8:36and this is like the ultimate revenge.
- 8:37I actually don't think that. I think he is just not self
- 8:41aware. I think possibly because it did
- 8:43blow up to something so big. You know, what happens when
- 8:45someone gets cancelled in such a major way, It's really hard to
- 8:50sift through what is like valid criticism and what is just the
- 8:54pylon. And I think it's possible that
- 8:56happened with net. I mean, I don't know, based on
- 8:58what I saw, like this podcast was really telling when somebody
- 9:01feels like the punishment that they are getting from, I mean,
- 9:04in his case, not just the audience, but also his
- 9:07workplace, like the company he had built, the punishment
- 9:10doesn't fit like the crime, quote UN quote.
- 9:12I can imagine you feel a little bit like resentful and salty
- 9:16just discussing the situation in general.
- 9:18That's probably giving him too much benefit of the doubt.
- 9:21But I think ultimately Ned knew that he could not re enter the
- 9:25public eye without addressing this.
- 9:27He probably thought this was the most meaningful way to address
- 9:30it in the sense of like getting the audience back on side.
- 9:32And I think from Ariel's perspective, I mean, based on
- 9:36what she was saying on the podcast, like she did not want
- 9:38all this like public attention. She found that very challenging.
- 9:41And so I wonder if she's thinking, well, if Ned is going
- 9:44to re enter the public eye, this could pick up that public
- 9:47attention again around her and around their relationship.
- 9:50And so if she just, you know, kind of nips it in the bud and
- 9:54does this podcast interview with him to relaunch and tells her
- 9:57story, then maybe there will not be as much speculation and not
- 10:01as much attention, you know, and it will just kind of go away,
- 10:05which I honestly think is is possible.
- 10:07I think actually that probably is what will happen.
- 10:09OK, the next story that I have for you guys, I am particularly
- 10:12interested in this because one of my favorite biographies of
- 10:16all time is Anna by Amy Odell. I read it when it first came out
- 10:20in 2022 and then I literally just finished it again today.
- 10:24I was listening to it on audiobook.
- 10:26So I am like very in the old school magazine world right now.
- 10:30And Conde Nast obviously is front and center of that
- 10:33biography. And today Conde Nast announced
- 10:36that they are launching an influencer storefront platform.
- 10:40If you haven't read Anna, you should.
- 10:42Obviously Anna Wintour is a very flawed human, human being.
- 10:45And I think that's what's so interesting about biographies is
- 10:47it's not told from, you know, their own perspective.
- 10:50It is a third party perspective. It is a culmination of
- 10:54interviews of people who knew them.
- 10:56And I, I don't know, I thought Amy did a good job.
- 10:58I know her biography was not, not that it wasn't well
- 11:01received. I think some people thought
- 11:02maybe she was too soft on Anna. But what was interesting to me
- 11:06was hearing about the old school industry and kind of the trials
- 11:10and tribulations that all of these major publishing houses
- 11:14that felt invincible, you know, like they were the Creme de la
- 11:19Creme. And then digital came along and
- 11:21just absolutely changed everything for them.
- 11:23And hearing about how everyone had to like adapt and I don't
- 11:27know, I find that really interesting.
- 11:28So this is like in the same vein as that.
- 11:30So the publishing house Conde Nast has announced it is
- 11:32launching a platform called Vet VETTE.
- 11:36It's a creator LED shopping slash like storefront platform,
- 11:40which enables creators to build their own storefronts online.
- 11:44Customers can shop directly through the storefronts.
- 11:48Brands can fulfill orders often via drop shipping and that
- 11:52handles all of the checkout and all of that kind of stuff.
- 11:55So creators will also have access to AI powered
- 11:58merchandising tools, inventory feeds, marketing insights and
- 12:02more. They can curate their stores
- 12:04like little boutiques without needing big teams or inventory
- 12:08themselves. OK, so this is Conde Nast
- 12:11response to declining success in affiliate marketing.
- 12:14I cannot help but notice that this is basically the exact same
- 12:18thing as LTK and Shop My. And I think this particular
- 12:22platform makes total sense for Conde Nast and even like Vogue
- 12:26specifically if you were going to get like more niche.
- 12:28It makes so much sense for them to do this.
- 12:31But it genuinely feels 15 years too late.
- 12:35And like, that's not to say that competitor products can't exist
- 12:38in the same market and that they can't all be successful, but
- 12:41like, I just don't know how they will differ differentiate this
- 12:45from the other platforms that have existed for like 15-10
- 12:49years at this point. So yes, Conde Nast has
- 12:51positioned VET as like a low friction option to affiliate
- 12:54marketing. So with affiliate marketing,
- 12:57creators don't always get clean attribution.
- 13:00Consumers have to bounce between platforms and different brand
- 13:03sites. Discovering products can be
- 13:05clunky, and VET allegedly promises to streamline that.
- 13:10With creators owning their storefronts, the checkout is
- 13:13handled, drop shipping is handled.
- 13:15So all of this has been positioned or seen as like a
- 13:18positive, but the biggest critique is the one that I have,
- 13:21which is like, this is just no different than the ones that
- 13:23already exist. I'm actually not a shopping
- 13:25girlie. I don't know if you guys can
- 13:27tell, but I like wear the same clothes all the time on the
- 13:31podcast. I just honestly shopping for new
- 13:34clothes does not cross my mind. It is not something that brings
- 13:37me joy. I'm grateful for that.
- 13:40Other very expensive things bring me joy, like getting very
- 13:43expensive bleach on hair and Botox and very expensive nails.
- 13:48But like shopping, it's just not really for me.
- 13:50I wish, I kind of wish it was because I like, love when I see
- 13:53people with a great style, but it's just like, I don't know,
- 13:56it's just not for me. And yeah, I'm interested to hear
- 13:58from you guys. If you are shopping girlies, do
- 14:02you use these apps? Like, do you use Shop My LTK?
- 14:06Would you use VET? You know, there's no technical
- 14:09affiliation with Vogue and Conde Nast aside from Conde Nast
- 14:12owning it. But yeah, I don't know, like,
- 14:14would you guys use these apps? I don't know.
- 14:17I'm really interested to hear what you guys think.
- 14:19OK, the last right that I have for you guys, this is kind of
- 14:24late, kind of not. So it's been going on all year
- 14:28since January. However, there are like new
- 14:30developments that have happened this month, which is why I say
- 14:33I'm a bit late because it's about like a week late.
- 14:35However, recently on TikTok, tons of people have been talking
- 14:39about it. And when I say recently, I mean
- 14:40like in the last 24 hours. So I thought, OK, I'm just going
- 14:43to cover it. It is a little bit niche even
- 14:46for us, but it is popping off specifically in like Australian
- 14:51influencer world. So Jackie Alexander Ander and
- 14:55Gabby Sullivan, they had a big friendship falling out.
- 14:58I'm going to talk about the timeline and what each of them
- 15:01has said about that. So Jackie Alexander and Gabby
- 15:04Sullivan are Australian influencers who are really
- 15:06popular in the like beauty lifestyle space.
- 15:09They were best friends. However, the first hint that
- 15:14maybe something was not so right in their friendship was back in
- 15:19January on the Happy Hour podcast with Lucy and Nikki.
- 15:22They said that they had two who influencer friends have a bit of
- 15:25a falling out over a wedding situation.
- 15:28And so people started putting the pieces together like who had
- 15:31a wedding, who is still following each other, who's not
- 15:33posting with each other. And fans discovered that Jackie
- 15:38and Gabby had unfollowed each other and they stopped posting
- 15:40each other. So like I said, this all
- 15:42happened in January. But then Fast forward to August,
- 15:45this is when things started to get messy.
- 15:47So Jackie was celebrating her hands and she shared a TikTok
- 15:51with the text. What happened to the trio?
- 15:53Over a video with her and fellow influencer Ronnie Bransby.
- 15:57She didn't directly call anyone out, but the clip obviously
- 16:01sparked speculation that she was referring to Gabby being missing
- 16:05in the trio. A day later, Gabby posted her
- 16:08own TikTok with the words some people will never forgive you
- 16:11for what they did to you. Read that again.
- 16:14And then a follower in the comments section asked her to
- 16:16spill the tea. She said spill the Jackie tea
- 16:19and Gabby replied. She got blackout at my wedding.
- 16:22Yelled at me in front of my entire family and made me cry.
- 16:25Obviously after that our friendship never recovered.
- 16:27I'm just trying to move on with my life.
- 16:29We are literally grown adults and it's so sad and
- 16:31embarrassing. Some girls thrive on drama.
- 16:34I've had one situation where I was on a wedding and one of the
- 16:40bridesmaids said something really inappropriate in the
- 16:43speech that she was giving. Oh my God it was so awkward.
- 16:47And I'm not talking like sex inappropriate like it was.
- 16:49I actually like, I don't actually want to say it, but it
- 16:53was so it was so awkward and everybody was just like, and
- 16:59then she was just like, what? Like, you know, when the party
- 17:01kept going and everything and people were like, girl, what the
- 17:04fuck was that? And she was like, oh, what like
- 17:06and got really defensive about it.
- 17:07So I can imagine like weird shit happens at weddings.
- 17:10Weddings bring out like weird vibes and people sometimes.
- 17:13OK, so then in mid-september, Jackie gave a statement to
- 17:17pedestrian TV saying that she wanted to set the record
- 17:20straight. She said I did not yell at
- 17:23Gabby's wedding nor did I ruin her day.
- 17:25We continue to remain friends post her wedding day.
- 17:28There is a deeper problem and level to the story which is
- 17:30missing and as anyone who has been in a toxic friendship would
- 17:33completely understand, sometimes people aren't meant to be
- 17:36friends and that's simply what happened here.
- 17:39In the end it wasn't healthy for the both of us and that's why it
- 17:41ended, which had already happened once before, but I
- 17:44chose to forgive her and try again.
- 17:46These accusations are false and hurtful.
- 17:49What has been more upsetting is the public shaming directed at
- 17:52me since disrespected that it was Gabby's special day and I
- 17:55would never want to take away from that.
- 17:57But respect goes both ways. I will not stand by silently
- 18:00while my character is attacked. I'm actually really surprised
- 18:04that Jackie gave a statement to Pedestrian.
- 18:07I feel like Australian influencers and celebrities
- 18:11don't tend to speak out as much I think as like American ones
- 18:15do. At least they're not as vocal
- 18:16about stuff like this. So giving a statement to the
- 18:19press I'm really surprised by. Not in like a good or bad way,
- 18:22just surprised. But yeah, that's the update.
- 18:25I thought some of you guys might be interested in this like a
- 18:27niche Australian influencer friendship falling out saga.
- 18:32Like I said, it's really blowing up specifically on like
- 18:35Australian pop culture TikTok right now.
- 18:37So I don't know, maybe Jackie's weddings coming up.
- 18:39I don't like follow these women closely, so I'm not really sure,
- 18:43but I assume they're it might be because Jackie's wedding is
- 18:46coming up soon and so people are starting to like, you know, look
- 18:49into it more and talk about it. Anyways, guys, that's it for me
- 18:51to scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 18:54I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 18:56and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US
- 18:59again. I'm sorry there's no mini
- 19:00tomorrow, but I will talk to you on Monday for a full week of me
- 19:055 days. OK, bye.
