- 0:00From limiting beliefs to bad bosses, from golf
- 0:02courses to board rooms, season one proved that
- 0:05confidence, courage, and community are muscles,
- 0:07not magic. Today, I'm pulling together the biggest
- 0:10lessons from season one. So if you're new, this
- 0:13is your shortcut. And if you've been here from
- 0:15the beginning, then this is your reinforcement
- 0:16and reminder so you can make those key takeaways
- 0:18action items. Welcome to LatinLifted, the women
- 0:29in leadership podcast where we flip the script
- 0:31on what it really takes to grow your career.
- 0:34I'm your host, Betsy Ham. I can't believe we
- 0:36have wrapped season one with 38 episodes. This
- 0:39has been such a fun year and such a fun project
- 0:42to launch. We had 20 full episodes with guests
- 0:46and we had 18 quick lifts, which those were the
- 0:49less than 10 minutes high level takeaways from
- 0:52the conversations with our guest. We had the
- 0:55opportunity to hear from 19 amazing women with
- 0:58very different paths. And we can't forget our
- 1:00three men that we also talked to as well. But
- 1:03what has been so cool with having the opportunity
- 1:05to speak to these women, you know, we spoke to
- 1:07everyone from CEOs to small business owners,
- 1:12authors, doctors, executives, entrepreneurs,
- 1:16executive coaches, you name it. We had so many
- 1:18women with various backgrounds who all had different
- 1:21career journeys and paths to where they are today.
- 1:24And it was cool. The age range from our guest
- 1:26is 23 to 66. And that's pretty cool because you're
- 1:31hearing from different perspectives and different
- 1:33times in their career. So despite the fact that
- 1:37each one of those episodes had a different title,
- 1:40different intention, different perspective we
- 1:42wanted to share, the reality is that there came
- 1:45down to some reoccurring themes that we heard
- 1:47throughout season one. And since it's 2025 recap,
- 1:51we're going to do the top five themes from season
- 1:54one. We'll walk through each theme, the episodes
- 1:56that brought it to life, and some moves you can
- 1:59steal for your own career. Lesson number one,
- 2:02confidence is a skill. If we would have made
- 2:05loud and lifted a drinking game, and every time
- 2:07someone said confidence you had to drink, well,
- 2:09we all be in trouble. It came up, I think, in
- 2:12every conversation that we had. But not as something
- 2:15that you either have or you don't have. Over
- 2:17and over, women told us that you have to build
- 2:20confidence. And this is coming from successful
- 2:22women. Confidence isn't a personality, it's a
- 2:25skill. And it's a muscle. And just like muscles
- 2:28in your body, it takes work and it takes time
- 2:31and being intentional. So just like going to
- 2:33the gym, you're going to have to go work on it
- 2:35more than one time and you're going to have to
- 2:36have a plan and be a little patient. So some
- 2:39of the episodes where we really talked about
- 2:40how to build your confidence, the one started
- 2:42with Julia talking about her positive affirmations.
- 2:45And I love that she took this so seriously that
- 2:47she recorded her own positive affirmations. And
- 2:49despite the fact that she was a very successful
- 2:51entrepreneur, she continues to level up. She's
- 2:54not settling at where she's at. She continues
- 2:56to want to improve and in order to improve she
- 2:58keeps leveling up her mindset work Jill also
- 3:01talked about ways to improve your confidence
- 3:04and one of the things she discussed was a gratitude
- 3:06journal writing down two things every day that
- 3:08you are thankful for I mentioned a victory folder
- 3:11as another way where you take all your wins and
- 3:13you put them in one spot and then you revisit
- 3:16that every so often Jill also talked a lot about
- 3:18limiting beliefs and saboteurs and it all comes
- 3:21down to mindset work and And I think it's really
- 3:24important because Jill made a really great comment
- 3:26about you start behaving differently when you
- 3:28start telling yourself a different story. And
- 3:30that's really where the mindset work comes in.
- 3:32And lastly, Jamie talked about teeing up confidence
- 3:35and connection and community with She Said Golf
- 3:38and building your confidence because you're trying
- 3:40something new and you'll slowly get better over
- 3:42time. So some listener actions here, because
- 3:45we all need to work on building our confidence
- 3:46is figure out what works for you. Maybe it's
- 3:48the positive affirmations. Maybe it's the mindset
- 3:51work. Maybe it's the gratitude journal. Figure
- 3:53out what will help you and start doing it tomorrow.
- 3:57Start slow. You don't have to do all of them.
- 3:58Just pick one that you can start immediately
- 4:01and see how that starts to improve your confidence
- 4:04over time. Again, this isn't a once and done
- 4:06thing to do and cross off your list. Lesson two,
- 4:09get outside your comfort zone. The second theme
- 4:13talked about growth always lives just outside
- 4:16the comfort zone. No one stayed safe and got
- 4:19the life they really wanted. We had the opportunity
- 4:21to hear from so many founders, entrepreneurs,
- 4:24small business owners, and we start with Margaret.
- 4:26And she went from being a teacher to starting
- 4:29her own company, now having multiple locations
- 4:33of a clothing company. Obviously very different
- 4:36and something that she was very uncomfortable
- 4:38doing and she had build her confidence and luckily
- 4:40for her She also had a very supportive husband
- 4:42who helped her to see that she could have the
- 4:44support in order to do this But talk about getting
- 4:47outside your comfort zone Gwen is another one
- 4:49who is a great role model of just getting outside
- 4:52your comfort zone and just going for it She worked
- 4:55in various industries and made a couple career
- 4:58jumps where a lot of people maybe would have
- 5:00been hesitant and not been comfortable because
- 5:02it was new but she took those moves and it helped
- 5:05to really accelerate her growth. And Sonia had
- 5:07a really great point in her episode where she
- 5:10talked about treating change like a wave to surf,
- 5:12not a storm to fear. Because a lot of times that's
- 5:15why we're not quick to get outside of our comfort
- 5:17zone because it feels safe and it feels secure
- 5:19and we don't like change typically as humans.
- 5:23So just knowing that it's just part of life and
- 5:25riding that wave I think is really great advice.
- 5:28And go back to Julie's episode, you know, she
- 5:31talked a lot about blooming and blooming growing
- 5:34requires more than ambition. It takes the courage
- 5:37and intention and a little dirt under your nails.
- 5:40But again, stepping outside of your comfort zone.
- 5:43Now let's be clear. These women didn't blow up
- 5:45their lives overnight or do something super dramatic.
- 5:48They made educated risks. They checked the numbers.
- 5:50They trusted their gut. They made sure they had
- 5:52the support and then they moved. Comfort wasn't
- 5:55the goal. Alignment was. So listener action,
- 5:58think about one thing you've been hesitant to
- 6:00do. or change or ask for and make a plan to do
- 6:03it. And I think a great thing is to do is ask
- 6:06yourself if I wanted a life with no regret, what
- 6:09would I stop tolerating or stop not doing? Think
- 6:13about that and make a plan to have some action.
- 6:16Lesson three, your personal brand is already
- 6:19talking. We talked a lot about image and presence
- 6:23and not in a superficial way, but let's be clear
- 6:26and your image or your personal brand is the
- 6:29feeling people have when your name comes up in
- 6:31a room that you're not in. And as Linda Strange
- 6:34said, you have to craft your brand before it's
- 6:36crafted for you. And crafting your brand starts
- 6:39with honestly the way you dress. And Melanie
- 6:41had some really great advice for us about using
- 6:44clothes as a power tool. Your presences and your
- 6:47communication style, they all go together. And
- 6:50she said about using colors as connection, not
- 6:52a costume. And I don't care who you are, stop
- 6:54wearing so much black is basically what she said,
- 6:56because that's not inviting. It's not warm. And
- 6:58it goes beyond, of course, just clothing. And
- 7:00again, to clarify, we're not saying to go out
- 7:03and throw out your wardrobe or buy really expensive
- 7:05clothes or be up on the latest. It's just about
- 7:08portraying who you are through your clothing
- 7:10again using your clothes as a power tool Then
- 7:13Linda strange really went into why it matters
- 7:16and how to improve it And I think this is really
- 7:19important and thinking about it everything from
- 7:21how you communicate how you show up in a room
- 7:24How are you engaged in a meeting? And I think
- 7:26especially in a meeting situation, it's your
- 7:28opportunity to present yourself in a way of being
- 7:31calm and confident and engaged. And this is all
- 7:34really important and all ties back into your
- 7:36personal brand. So listener action here, you
- 7:38might be thinking, what do we do about it? I
- 7:40don't even know what people think about me. So
- 7:41the best advice is the five word exercise. This
- 7:44is a great tip to do. So think of the five words
- 7:47you want people to describe you. and write them
- 7:50down. It could be adaptable, it could be strategic,
- 7:53it could be connector, it could be problem solver,
- 7:56whatever it is, write down those five words that
- 7:58you want people to describe you as a leader.
- 8:00And then the fun part is you're going to ask
- 8:02others, ask your boss, ask your peers, ask people
- 8:05who work with you on a fairly regular basis who
- 8:07also give you genuine feedback, and then see
- 8:10where the list maybe isn't aligned. Maybe you're
- 8:12going to get words that you're kind of surprised
- 8:14by, and then you just have to sort of work to
- 8:16fill those gaps. Maybe it's dead on and that's
- 8:18amazing, but being aware and intentional about
- 8:21your image is very important. Lesson number four
- 8:25exposure is a strategy not an accident. This
- 8:28might be the spiciest truth of season one Performance
- 8:31alone doesn't move you up visibility does now
- 8:34this goes back to one of my favorite topics is
- 8:36pie Which is a great professional development
- 8:39tool that I have stuck with for years and Linda
- 8:42strange did a whole episode on pie but we'll
- 8:44focus on the ease since we're talking about exposure
- 8:46is a strategy and The whole thing with exposure
- 8:49is a lot of times women struggle with the exposure
- 8:52piece because they don't want to to come across
- 8:53being cocky or overly confident or if it's something
- 8:57that's a team opportunity, they don't want to
- 8:59be looking like they're taking credit. But the
- 9:01reality is people have to know what you do and
- 9:04the value that you bring. So who knows your work?
- 9:07Whose radar are you on? And Linda gave a great
- 9:10example of the Broadway stage versus community
- 9:13theater. So Broadway stage, maybe you get the
- 9:15opportunity to present at a really important
- 9:17meeting. Obviously you're going to be a little
- 9:20buttoned up. You're going to be prepared. This
- 9:21is your opportunity for that exposure. So take
- 9:24it right? And maybe you're even at a town hall
- 9:26meeting or some event at a big corporate building
- 9:29and you have the opportunity to talk to the leadership
- 9:32team, introduce yourself to the CEO, whatever
- 9:34it is. Those are those Broadway stage opportunities
- 9:37that Linda was talking about. But equally important
- 9:40is the community theater, and that's pretty much
- 9:42every day. So again, how are you showing up on
- 9:46in meetings and how are you using those opportunities?
- 9:49Uh, you know, just casually stopping by someone's
- 9:51office and saying, hello, what are you doing
- 9:53on LinkedIn? Another great opportunity for that
- 9:56exposure. And Lindsay talked about why this is
- 9:58important because there's no such thing as job
- 10:00security. There's only career security. So what
- 10:02are you doing to create that environment around
- 10:06you where you know people? And I love. that Catherine
- 10:09mentioned about doing a coffee chat every week.
- 10:12Now that might feel aggressive for you, but even
- 10:14starting that at all. And it could be in person,
- 10:16it can be virtual, but just starting to reach
- 10:18out to people so they get to know who you are
- 10:21and what you do. And Lindsay talked about how
- 10:23she messed that up years ago where she was at
- 10:25the same company for so many years. She didn't
- 10:27really know anybody outside in the industries.
- 10:30And then when she lost her job, she really struggled.
- 10:32So she had to really work to start making those
- 10:34connections. And I love that Sonia talked about
- 10:37building that. career roadmap this kind of goes
- 10:39into it. It's the visibility and being able to
- 10:42be across whether it's within your own company
- 10:45or within the industry that you're in or maybe
- 10:47even a new industry. Nearly every guest had a
- 10:50story of a coffee chat, a stretch assignment
- 10:53or a brave ass that just changed their trajectory
- 10:55because of their exposure. So listener action,
- 10:59make your top five list of people that you need
- 11:02to make sure they know who you are, whether it's
- 11:04inside your organization or out and just start
- 11:07reaching out, you know, one at a time. Maybe
- 11:10every other week you start reaching out to people
- 11:12and maybe you start posting more on LinkedIn.
- 11:14So people know what you're working about. Even
- 11:16if you're not looking for a job, that's not.
- 11:18always the point. But again, it goes back to
- 11:20having a little bit of that career security.
- 11:22And lastly, map your Broadway and your community
- 11:25theater opportunities for the next three months.
- 11:28Is our new networking event that you go to something
- 11:30that you could be part of? Lesson number five,
- 11:32our last lesson, community and support are your
- 11:35competitive advantage. You cannot do any of this
- 11:39alone. So first, let's talk a little bit about
- 11:41the community builders that were on the show.
- 11:44So we had the team that talked about women restaurant
- 11:47leadership and building this amazing community
- 11:49for women in restaurants. Jamie from She Said
- 11:52Golf and Katherine from Our Third Place. All
- 11:55three ladies are building and creating these
- 11:57spaces, physical and digital, for women to connect,
- 11:59mentor and show up as they are. And that's really
- 12:02important. Those are very legit community builders.
- 12:04But the other way to think about community is
- 12:07just your circles and who you surround yourself
- 12:09with. And this is something that is really great
- 12:11to take a quick audit of, you know, who are in
- 12:14those circles? Who are your cheerleaders? Who
- 12:15has your back? Who can you call for advice? Who
- 12:18can maybe smack you upside the head like Patti
- 12:20said when you need some accountability or someone
- 12:22to get you out of your funk. But it's really
- 12:25important to look at who you're surrounding yourself
- 12:27with within your community or your circles. And
- 12:30again, that starts with probably your company
- 12:34or your office and it goes out from there. And
- 12:37like I've mentioned in the past, I still have
- 12:39a community of women that I haven't worked with
- 12:41for 15 years, but they're still part of my group
- 12:44and women that I can rely on. on to help me,
- 12:46support me, maybe talk me out of something or
- 12:48maybe talk me into something. But it's really
- 12:50important to have that support and that friendship.
- 12:53And then also that partnership and having somebody
- 12:56that you can go to, whether it's in your family
- 12:58or your friends to help support you. The other
- 13:01piece of this is the actual support. And this
- 13:03is the reality of our lives. Thankfully, we don't
- 13:06just have to worry about work. We have personal
- 13:08lives and we have kids and parents and friends
- 13:12and animals, whatever it is in your life. if
- 13:15you have something else to worry about, including
- 13:17yourself, besides your job. And we all go through
- 13:20these different seasons, you know, whether it's
- 13:21that your kids are young or that now you're maybe
- 13:23dealing with aging parents, but we need support.
- 13:26No one can do this alone. And Dr. Linda Friedrizi
- 13:29Williams talked about this invisible labor and
- 13:31this mental load that women carry and why we
- 13:34need support systems. And the women who succeed
- 13:36can't succeed without that support system. It's
- 13:39not just a slogan, it's essential. And that's
- 13:41why I thought it was really important to do the
- 13:43episode with the three husbands slash dad slash
- 13:47men, obviously, but they talked about it from
- 13:49their perspective and how they knew that their
- 13:51wife would be more successful with their support.
- 13:54Now, does that mean that they are amazing all
- 13:56the time? Of course not, we're all human, but
- 13:58that's the challenge of this, right? We get so
- 14:00focused on being perfect and trying to balance.
- 14:04I hate when people talk about work -life balance.
- 14:06There's no such thing, it's juggling. And sometimes
- 14:08you have to prioritize and sometimes you know
- 14:10one of those balls is gonna drop. You have to
- 14:11make sure it's the right one that's gonna drop.
- 14:13one that's not going to break, but it's just
- 14:15getting that support and it's everything from
- 14:17being okay to ask somebody to watch your kids
- 14:20or pick them up from school to asking somebody
- 14:22to help make dinner in your house or clean the
- 14:26room, whatever it is, it varies. But at the end
- 14:29of the day, we're not Wonder Woman, we're not
- 14:30going to do this ourselves. So making sure you
- 14:32have the support system around you, which includes
- 14:35your family and friends. So if you don't have
- 14:38it, you got to build it and it may be there and
- 14:40you just need to ask. action, do a quick circle
- 14:44audit. Who are your go -to people for honesty,
- 14:47strategy, and hype? Where do you need to upgrade
- 14:50your inputs? And where do you maybe need to get
- 14:52rid of people? This is the other part that we
- 14:53don't talk enough about. Sometimes you might
- 14:55have people within your community or your circle
- 14:57that aren't good for you. get rid of them. And
- 15:01if you're struggling with that community and
- 15:02that support in your circles then look for those
- 15:04organizations like Women in Restaurant Leadership
- 15:07or She Said Golf where you can start to meet
- 15:09women that maybe your paths wouldn't across because
- 15:11you're in very different industries but you have
- 15:13that opportunity to start building support with
- 15:15like -minded women which is amazing. All right
- 15:18so those were our top five lessons learned from
- 15:222025 season one. So if you remember nothing else
- 15:25remember just five things. Confidence is built
- 15:29through action growth doesn't happen in your
- 15:31comfort zone your personal brand is already talking
- 15:34decide what it's saying exposure is a strategy
- 15:37not an accident and your community and support
- 15:40are your competitive advantage I know it feels
- 15:43like a lot and it can feel overwhelming. So here's
- 15:45what I challenge you to do. Pick one of those
- 15:47themes and tomorrow, not January 1st, tomorrow,
- 15:51start focusing on it for 30 days and see if you
- 15:54can start to make progress. This isn't something
- 15:56that just magically happens overnight. And again,
- 15:58it's not easy or everybody would be doing it.
- 16:00So just pick something that you know is not one
- 16:02of your strengths and start to work on it and
- 16:04build that. And then when you can feel good about
- 16:07that, then we'll pick another theme next year.
- 16:09But for now, let's just worry about one thing.
- 16:11I really hope I hope you enjoyed season one.
- 16:14We had the opportunity to hear from such amazing
- 16:16guests. So thank you for your engagement and
- 16:19your feedback. And I cannot wait to kick off
- 16:22season two early in January. We already have
- 16:25some amazing guests lined up that I know you're
- 16:27going to love to hear from. So until next time,
- 16:30stay loud and stay lifted.
