- 2:35at Auntie Maze. All right, guys, what?
- 2:37What's new? What's new that no news.
- 2:39No news this past week. Nothing's happened.
- 2:42Status quo, Status quo. What a great, what a great time
- 2:45to be a cat. You know, Chris Kleiman is our
- 2:47head coach. He's still kicking it.
- 2:50We're about to go to a bowl game.
- 2:52What? What else could possibly have
- 2:54happened since we've been on? Chef and I recorded a pod a week
- 3:00ago tonight and none of this stuff I there were maybe I guess
- 3:05there were some whispers. I wasn't on the boards last
- 3:07Tuesday so I didn't see anything until Wednesday morning.
- 3:10And I start getting texts before I wake up from people being
- 3:13like, holy shit, it's happening, climbing, stepping down and and
- 3:17Klein is getting hired and I I was like, wait, there's no way
- 3:21this is corroborating. Then I go over to KSO and D YS
- 3:24confirming that it's happening. And then he has to walk it back
- 3:28a little bit and say like it's rumored, like Klein is the lean
- 3:32on who's going to be the next coach.
- 3:34And then Klein still hasn't even like hasn't retired yet.
- 3:38And then we get the Prescott and then the whole thing Jean says
- 3:41he doesn't have his phone number like a ridiculous, ridiculous
- 3:44past seven days. But I guess before we get into
- 3:48it, Kleiman steps down as our head coach after a six and six
- 3:52season. The team is opting out of a bowl
- 3:54game, which I don't know if that would have happened or not,
- 3:56whatever. We don't have to get into that
- 3:58yet. But Kleiman steps down has a
- 4:01pretty good track record, I would say, as the K State head
- 4:04coach. Multiple seven and eight win
- 4:06seasons, I believe he was. This is a stat that had been
- 4:10paired by a number of people in the K State media, especially D
- 4:13Scott Fritchin. But there are like 5 programs or
- 4:17eight programs that had been able to win as consistently as
- 4:20Coach Kleiman had done at K State.
- 4:22And then you get this season where it starts in Ireland,
- 4:25which feels like it was a year ago now, and the whole thing
- 4:28just spirals from there. You lose to Army, you almost
- 4:31lose to North Dakota and and you bounce back.
- 4:35You get a couple of wins, but ultimately it's it's kind of a
- 4:37lost season when you look at it at face value.
- 4:41You don't go to a bowl game and, and all that stuff despite being
- 4:43bowl eligible. The team kind of hops out of
- 4:45that. So with I guess just a quick
- 4:47retrospective on the season and climbing, stepping down thoughts
- 4:52from the two of you on the climbing retirement situation
- 4:55and and just the season at large that led to this.
- 4:59I thought, I thought it was shocking, to be honest with you.
- 5:02I did not expect climbing to be stepping down.
- 5:06And my first reaction was, was it because of the 6th and 6th
- 5:10season? Is it, you know, it, is it the
- 5:14is the program in a downward trajectory?
- 5:17And I couldn't think that it was that.
- 5:20Obviously it was very personal for him when when he made that
- 5:27his post retirement speech, you know, he, he at the podium, he
- 5:31seemed very, you know, at peace with it.
- 5:34He's he said as much and it, it it made it feel like the program
- 5:39is not as bad as it is and it's more on him.
- 5:43And I think that we're in a better spot because he took that
- 5:47that immediate action And it is it.
- 5:51I will remember to climb an era in a very positive light.
- 5:55I mean, the Big 12 Championship obviously is the that capstone
- 5:59of that. And those were some of the most
- 6:02fun years of K State football that I can remember.
- 6:05So and he brought some of the most iconic players that I can
- 6:09remember in K State history. So the climbing era is a is a
- 6:16shining star in my book. Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 6:20I mean, you think about his first year in 2019, you know,
- 6:26and a year a lot of uncertainty and and whatnot, and you think
- 6:32of maybe one of the first signature wins he ever had was
- 6:35what, Week 2 Mississippi State on the road?
- 6:40I was like, I can be completely honest when I say this, you
- 6:44know, I was very unsure about the Chris climb and hire in the
- 6:48December of 2018 enough to where, you know, I really didn't
- 6:53feel that it was going to be the best for the program.
- 6:57And you know, week two he like completely shut that up.
- 7:00You know, going on the road to an SEC school and winning that
- 7:02game. He had a top ten win against
- 7:05Oklahoma in 2019. You know, the, the beginning of
- 7:11his era just kind of showed, I felt at the time, his ability to
- 7:18#1 when the transport transfer portal really was kind of like
- 7:22starting up. You know, that was when he
- 7:24picked up some, some, You know, that running backroom in 2019
- 7:28was a hodgepodge, if you will. You know, James Gilbert, Jordan
- 7:33Brown from North Carolina, Harry Trotter, these guy, you know, he
- 7:38didn't have running backs. You know, when he picked up this
- 7:41team. And, you know, I, I really feel
- 7:43like he got the best out of Skylar Thompson, you know,
- 7:47towards the beginning of his tenure.
- 7:49And obviously Skyler was there, you know, for three seasons.
- 7:53And yeah, so I, I look at the Chris Kleiman era very
- 7:58positively. Obviously the Big 12
- 8:02championship win in 20/20/22, you know his, you know, he was
- 8:08three of six in bowl games. So the the end of this, I think
- 8:16a lot of 2025 makes sense to me, especially towards the end of
- 8:20the year. I'll be very interested to see
- 8:24how much of this gets out, like how much of the insurance and
- 8:28outs of what happened the past week gets out.
- 8:34When did the conversations actually start?
- 8:37You know, I it, it's very interesting to me.
- 8:39I don't know if we'll ever know, like I really don't.
- 8:42But you know, was there a thought even before the KU game?
- 8:47You know, you think about that, that embrace that Kleiman and
- 8:51Gene had at the KU game. You know, like there's just some
- 8:54of these clips where you look at, you know, some of the the
- 8:58things that Kleiman did kind of, you know, after the game or this
- 9:01and that. And you wonder like it has this
- 9:05has this been something that's really been in his mind for
- 9:08weeks? And you know, maybe some people
- 9:11have kind of like picked up on a little bit of it and now it it
- 9:14comes full circle last Wednesday.
- 9:16I don't know, but I will say this.
- 9:21He was in in probably the perfect guy to to come in after
- 9:28Bill Snyder. He was a guy that took this
- 9:32program after year 1. He got him to a bowl in 2019.
- 9:37You know, a team that you know, was, it was kind of, you know,
- 9:40not looking dim, but you know that there wasn't a ton of
- 9:43success in 2018. And you know, he he brought this
- 9:48team to a bowl game in 2019. He did a really good job on the
- 9:51recruiting side. You know, obviously Du Swan is a
- 9:54big one. You think about like Felix and
- 9:57Uzama, obviously Will Howard, you, you have these guys that he
- 10:03brought in. He did a really good job from
- 10:05the recruiting perspective. And I truly believe that the
- 10:09landscape of college football has changed for coaches like
- 10:13Chris Kleiman. It is a different game now.
- 10:16And it's not as much as the game anymore.
- 10:18It's the out. It's what's happening off the
- 10:21field that I think is, is putting some coaches in a little
- 10:26bit of a lurch because you don't know how to take care of some of
- 10:30these items. And having a coach, you know,
- 10:33come in, we'll talk about Colin Klein here in a little bit.
- 10:36You know, having a coach come in who really is seeing and kind of
- 10:41understanding some of the outside things that are that are
- 10:44the factor I think is going to be really key for KC football.
- 10:48But I'm very appreciative of Chris Klein and what he has done
- 10:52for us. What what you said something
- 10:55very interesting there, like where you kind of the end of the
- 10:59season put with him retiring put things into perspective, like
- 11:03how long did that decision was? Was it bubbling up?
- 11:08So it makes me wonder because with the pod that me and Bob did
- 11:11done just this previous episode, we we were like, what O&O and
- 11:17five and one score games? If any of those flip and like,
- 11:21let's say all of them flip. Are we talking about Chris Climb
- 11:24and retiring? If does the landscape of hit of
- 11:27football bother him so much when he has an 11 and 1 football
- 11:32team? I don't think it does.
- 11:33I think the six and six kind of has an impact on that and maybe
- 11:38it spurred some things in the the right direction to where,
- 11:42you know, serendipitously, it just happened to happen where
- 11:47Colin Klein is right there in our laps and he's ready to go.
- 11:50So it it is very weird the coincidences, how they lined up.
- 11:56But the climbing era is it's cemented.
- 12:01It's cemented and it it helped this program in a way that I
- 12:06don't know where we'd be that if we didn't have a Chris Kleiman.
- 12:09I don't know who could have shouldered the load of a post
- 12:13Bill Snyder other than him, because it damn sure wasn't Seth
- 12:17Latrell. No.
- 12:18And I was, I was looking, I had a time hop from what was it 7
- 12:22years ago in 2018, December this week, we were having the same
- 12:25conversation, not on this pod because the pod didn't exist,
- 12:29but a tweet from Derek Young about the three finalists for
- 12:33Bill Snyder's successor. And it was Chris Climb and Seth
- 12:36Latrell, Neil Brown and Mike Norvell.
- 12:40And we look, you look at those coaches, I mean, Mike Norville,
- 12:43Neil. Brown would have been fine.
- 12:44Actually, I think Neil Brown could have done somewhat of.
- 12:47It are you climb? Are you climb, Truster brother,
- 12:51you trusted the climb. Trust the climb.
- 12:55Those other two, well, Seth Littrell's in a totally
- 12:58different stratosphere. Like he's that.
- 13:00That would have never worked. Maybe Norvell, I mean he had a
- 13:05strong season, but he is a he is a portal hound.
- 13:08I don't know how well that would have worked at K State, but who
- 13:11knows? Who knows?
- 13:12But I I think Kleiman obviously was the best fit and he he fit
- 13:17like a glove. I couldn't agree more.
- 13:20And I you look at the track record, he wins a Big 12
- 13:23championship. You go to a Sugar Bowl, granted,
- 13:27you lose it to Nick Saban with a team that decided not to opt out
- 13:30anybody, including Bryce Young and oh gosh, the The Who is the
- 13:34linebacker? Tamir Gibbs.
- 13:36Will Anderson, Will Anderson, just a stacked team.
- 13:42What do you think about it now? But you win the Pop Tarts Bowl,
- 13:45Rate Bowl, Texas Bowl, obviously that Liberty Bowl.
- 13:48We don't have to talk about that Liberty Bowl.
- 13:50We could have had bookends in the Liberty Bowl in the climbing
- 13:52air. If you think about it, that
- 13:54would have been fitting. But yeah, multiple nine win, 10
- 13:57win seasons, which is that's that's about all you can ask
- 13:59for. I think he was the perfect guy
- 14:01to succeed Bill Snyder and kind of bridge that gap.
- 14:04I know he's an older school kind of coach to a degree.
- 14:08He not as old school as a Bill Snyder, but not new school like
- 14:11a like a Collin Klein or like a gosh, I'm forgetting the name of
- 14:16the guy that Oklahoma State just hired from North Texas, Mike
- 14:19Morris Morris, Eric Morris, Eric Morris.
- 14:22So he's not that new school at at the same time, I feel like he
- 14:25did a decent job of adapting you.
- 14:28You already mentioned year one, Matt, where you bring in
- 14:30graduate transfers because that's all you could really do
- 14:33at that point. But then I mean, Timmy Horn was
- 14:36one of those guys that he brought in in that first year
- 14:38too, and he had a cup of coffee in the NFL.
- 14:41There's, there's multiple guys that he's brought in through the
- 14:43years through the portal and you know, none, none better than,
- 14:49you know, some of those first running backs that he brought in
- 14:52and over the years. It's, it's just interesting to
- 14:55see how the portal has developed.
- 14:57And, and I think this year, there's obviously a lot of
- 14:59excitement about this team coming into the season.
- 15:02You you definitely don't meet the expectations that you
- 15:05thought you were going to have coming into it, But I think he
- 15:08did his best to adapt as as as he could.
- 15:13Again, just outsider looking in here.
- 15:15I'm not insider with the program or anything.
- 15:17Just just from what I could see. He did what he could and I think
- 15:21he did a great job when you look back at his track record.
- 15:23But the future is now. Colin Klein has been hired to be
- 15:28the next the 36th head coach K State football.
- 15:33What were your thoughts on the higher and then the roll out and
- 15:35how everything occurred Because you you go into that press
- 15:37conference where Kleiman retires, which I understand that
- 15:40they wanted to give him space and give that air for him to
- 15:43breathe and have that retirement ceremony for for lack of a
- 15:47better way to put a get the whole coaching staff of all the
- 15:49other teams and stuff that that were there to to watch it and
- 15:53witness it because he had an impact on other guys like Travis
- 15:56Gifford was even saying that he was instrumental in him coming
- 15:59in to be a track and field coach.
- 16:01But you come out of that Gene saying he doesn't even have his
- 16:05phone number, but it seems like they're very clearly been some
- 16:09at least back channel conversations going on between
- 16:13Klein's camp agent whatever and Gene's camp or K State athletics
- 16:18to some sort of a degree because these things don't happen
- 16:21overnight. But at the same time, Klein was
- 16:23maybe 30 minutes away from accepting the job at USF and and
- 16:26becoming a bull. So what were your thoughts on
- 16:29the roll out the higher itself kind of those 48 to 72 hours
- 16:33between Wednesday morning and and then Friday afternoon when
- 16:37when he has his introductory press conference?
- 16:41I mean, I'll start with the the Wednesday press conference and
- 16:46I, I was somewhat disappointed with the press conference and I
- 16:51think a lot of it is on Jean Taylor.
- 16:55I did not like the kind of stand off about NIL that started his
- 17:02portion. I, I do probably get that, yes,
- 17:08you know, he was probably being sarcastic with the phone number
- 17:11and like this and that. But I, I really wanted that
- 17:14press conference to be 100% appreciative of Chris Kleiman
- 17:20and not talking necessarily about a coaching search, not
- 17:25talking about NIL, but talk about Chris Kleiman.
- 17:28Talk about his, you know, what he's brought to Kansas State,
- 17:33what he brought to the football program.
- 17:36You know, your relationship with him for the, for the many years
- 17:40even prior to Kansas State that you, you all had been together.
- 17:43You know, they're genuine friends.
- 17:45And I, I was just a little turned off with the conversation
- 17:49about the NIL piece and the landscape of how college
- 17:53football changed and, you know, these schools signing this
- 17:57agreement and all of this stuff, like talk about Chris Kleiman.
- 18:01I mean, just just make that be your theme.
- 18:05I, I, I, I was a little bit at the time, you know, I what I was
- 18:10not impressed with how Jean kind of took the Colin Klein
- 18:13conversation, or at least the the question that had been
- 18:15brought up. A simple today is a day to
- 18:19celebrate Chris Kleiman. We'll talk about a coaching
- 18:21search tomorrow. I feel like would have sufficed
- 18:24instead of, you know, just being a little bit of a clown with
- 18:27like, oh, I don't have his phone number.
- 18:29Like, come on, man. You know, like this.
- 18:33I think a lot of us who who understand the college football
- 18:36landscape at this point know that you've probably indirectly
- 18:41had a conversation with Colin Klein, like or, you know, you've
- 18:45had indirect conversations with potential coaching candidates.
- 18:50So just make the conversation about Chris Kleinman.
- 18:53I mean, at that. That was the thing that I think
- 18:55really kind of turned me off about that press conference
- 18:57because I thought Chris did a really good job of just kind of,
- 19:01you know, laying some emotions on a sleeve and, you know, just
- 19:05giving, you know, his kind of peace.
- 19:09But I was just really turned off by Jean in that in that moment,
- 19:13you know, but probably some people disagree.
- 19:14But I wanted that moment to be about Chris Kleiman and not
- 19:18about the landscape of college football and not about, you
- 19:22know, a coaching search that's going to start tomorrow.
- 19:26That that was what I took from it.
- 19:28Well, I think to be fair to Jean, because I mean, obviously
- 19:31there's a lot of hate in your voice right now towards Jean
- 19:35Taylor, but I will say that he was asked about that.
- 19:40So, you know, it's not like, it's not like he just came out
- 19:43of nowhere. I mean, at the very beginning of
- 19:45the press conference, he was in tears talking about Chris
- 19:48climbing the entire time. It's not like he just when he
- 19:51started taking questions, that's what the reporters wanted to
- 19:53talk about. So that's when he addressed
- 19:56that. I don't think he was.
- 19:58And I will say I agree with your point about him lamenting on
- 20:02about like the the state of college football.
- 20:06But I think that was in context with him losing his really good
- 20:10buddy and his head coach. And that's for, in his view, the
- 20:13reason why he lost. Chris Kleinman to retirement
- 20:18because the state of college football, mind you.
- 20:20I mean, you could not make excuses about it and just, you
- 20:23know, work together and try to better your situation because
- 20:27I'm assuming that's what you're going to do with Collin Klein.
- 20:29So I could get with you on that. But I don't think him being a
- 20:34little goofball, Bud Light drinking goofball about losing
- 20:37his phone number or whatever is really on Gene.
- 20:40I mean, he they asked about himself.
- 20:42I thought the I thought the press conference with Jean
- 20:45Taylor about Chris Klein was excellent.
- 20:49To be honest with you. I thought, I thought it was a
- 20:51lot of emotion. I and that's what you're going
- 20:54to get when you hire like people that are really close to you and
- 20:58you don't hire just some mercenary off the street that
- 21:01you know, is here for four years and goes off somewhere.
- 21:04It's these are really tight family things.
- 21:07And I thought we're going to talk about Colin Klein.
- 21:10I think this is more of like the end.
- 21:13You know, the family dynamic is never going to go away with
- 21:17Kansas State. I think be because you're
- 21:20hiring, the tree is just growing like it's it's just out there
- 21:24and it's it's it's not going anywhere.
- 21:26So the family atmosphere is still going to be there.
- 21:29I think Jane made a good hire both ways.
- 21:31I think I've got some views on the Colin Klein hire that you
- 21:35know, might not be as popular. Maybe.
- 21:37Maybe in the same vein as Matt and his hate for Gene Taylor.
- 21:43I do not hate you. I do not hate Gene Taylor.
- 21:46I this we need to stop with that.
- 21:51I mean, I look, I, I, I feel like it's a valid criticism of
- 21:55the, of the situation, like in, in the grand scheme of things,
- 21:58like, yeah, he didn't bring up Colin Klein.
- 22:01Like, but you know that a journalist is going to ask the
- 22:05question, right? And I just felt the answer was a
- 22:11laughable answer. Like just be honest.
- 22:15OK. But OK, if he's honest there and
- 22:17let's say he's honest there and it falls through, now he's.
- 22:22Been I'm telling him, I'm saying don't provide an answer, just
- 22:25say I want it. Like today.
- 22:27Is it an opportunity where we can celebrate Chris Kleiman?
- 22:31We, we can talk about a coaching search tomorrow?
- 22:34Like that's a simple answer that I feel like provides A genuine
- 22:39answer #1 of this is a press conference revolving around
- 22:43Chris Kleiman and him retiring an important member and, you
- 22:48know, piece of K State football history.
- 22:51We can talk about a coaching search tomorrow.
- 22:54Not oh, I don't have his phone number.
- 22:56Like, come on, man. Like I, I don't, I like, I just,
- 23:00I thought it was a stupid answer And and you know, yeah, we're
- 23:04probably just like, I'm probably just bagging on one part of it,
- 23:07but it's not like I, I just felt I just didn't like necessarily
- 23:13his portion of it. PR1O1 it's PR one O 1 that you
- 23:17want him to. Yes.
- 23:18And I did, I did go to, I did go to K state for public relations.
- 23:22So I can I? Can I did not.
- 23:23I did not. I took I can.
- 23:24Concur with Matt's response. I, I took one journalism class.
- 23:28Like I, I don't hate Jean Taylor.
- 23:31Like, yeah, I may have some opinions about Jean Taylor, but
- 23:34I don't want Chef to be proclaiming that I want Jean
- 23:37Taylor fired. I never said that.
- 23:41I never said that. Let's run your own brain.
- 23:44All. Right, reeling it back in here.
- 23:48My original question was about what, what did you think about
- 23:52those 72 hours between the press conference?
- 23:56The news starting to circulate that, OK, Colin Klein is is
- 24:00closer to accepting. We've got like maybe not the
- 24:03flight tracker, but we know what his flight's going to land now
- 24:06he's going to get he gets announced officially Thursday
- 24:09evening and resounding resounding positive response
- 24:15from K State nation on on how how he was announced, who was
- 24:19who was the choice. I think it was the obvious
- 24:22choice. I don't think there's anybody
- 24:23else that you would want to go out and go after to succeed
- 24:28Chris Kleinman. The time was now and I think
- 24:31Jean Taylor, I think Richard Linton, I think the entire
- 24:34athletic department, I think Chris Klein and they all knew
- 24:36and understood Colin Klein's not going to be on the market for
- 24:40much longer. And if he is, we need to strike
- 24:43while the iron's hot. We need to strike while we have
- 24:45this window of opportunity to go get him.
- 24:48Otherwise, we're going to have to pay a buyout next year,
- 24:50whether that's for South Florida, it ended up not being
- 24:53Oklahoma State, but we have it on pretty good authority that he
- 24:56was a finalist for that position as well.
- 24:59He probably, I mean, who knows what he would have done next
- 25:01year at USF, but you see these G5 coaches get swooped up after
- 25:05a year now like John Sumrall and some of these other guys.
- 25:08So thoughts on, you know, the announcement, the choice itself
- 25:14of Collin Klein, the press conference for Collin Klein on
- 25:17that Friday and how he introduced himself as the now
- 25:22head coach of K State after we all knew who he was as
- 25:26quarterback of K State and offensive coordinator?
- 25:29I think that that 72 hours span, I think it was the fervor for
- 25:36who we wanted as a, as a collective of fans and you know,
- 25:41just boosters, all of that, that everybody was a resounding yes
- 25:46to Colin Klein. And I think the iron needed to
- 25:49be struck while it was hot in terms of getting them into in
- 25:54the building. And it just so happened, like I
- 25:56said earlier, just happened to fall in place with him almost
- 26:00taking the Oklahoma State job, almost taking the USF job.
- 26:04It all worked out perfectly to get him in right when we needed
- 26:08them to. And then I don't think he could
- 26:11have really. And everybody has said this that
- 26:13he's, you know, he's not the most flamboyant guy.
- 26:17He's very measured. He's very all this.
- 26:19He's not the greatest on the mic in terms of, you know, Roo Rah,
- 26:23but I think there was there wasn't really anything that he
- 26:27could have said that would have, you know, turned anybody off.
- 26:30And from what we heard and what we saw, the build up one, the
- 26:37two like the, you know, just the little snippets that we got
- 26:40where he's still in College Station.
- 26:42He's got K state gear on. He's, you know, throwing up the
- 26:45CK and all that stuff. No, the Wildcat it it was all
- 26:51perfect and it there's nothing that he could have said wrong
- 26:55and he actually knocked it out the park.
- 26:57I think the the the introductory press conference was perfect.
- 27:03I think, other than, you know, the audio issues from everybody
- 27:07else except for ESPN plus, but ESPN plus didn't want to show
- 27:10like half of it most of the time because it was cutting out.
- 27:13So I think everything was perfect these lat the the the 72
- 27:18hour window that you're talking about.
- 27:21It's and really now it's all on what can he do on the field?
- 27:28And we could talk about that. I mean, obviously this is a long
- 27:32time before we even get to to that point, but there's, you
- 27:37know, there's two trains of thought when you think of that.
- 27:40I mean, obviously he's one of our own.
- 27:42He's going to get some grace, but he's got to prove it.
- 27:45So it's it's a lot. It's a lot.
- 27:47And but I'm I'm happy that with the decision that was made and I
- 27:51think it was the necessary one. Well, I think for K State fans,
- 27:56like the biggest like wild card in this is like the timing
- 27:59because we've seen in like recent history where timing
- 28:04doesn't necessarily work out for coaches that you potentially
- 28:07would want. I think a lot of people
- 28:09obviously trend towards the Brad Underwood situation that
- 28:13occurred, you know, and what 2015 you know, of trying to pull
- 28:19him after Bruce Weber was kind of struggling with the team.
- 28:22But the you know, the time, the time frame between when they
- 28:28actually sent the announcement, I think it was just a lot of
- 28:31just like you're waiting on your hands, right.
- 28:33Like you, we have some really good insiders in the program,
- 28:38you know, across the the different entities.
- 28:42I know we speak about KSOA good amount, but you know, a lot of
- 28:46people subscribe to a board like that and when you hear it's
- 28:52happening but you're not hearing anything, it's a little bit of
- 28:55that nervousness, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 29:01And you know, it's kind of like trusting you got to trust the
- 29:04sources that people are getting, you know, because obviously as a
- 29:08casual fan, none of us have sources, right?
- 29:11Like we, we rely on other people to give us that information.
- 29:15So, you know, when that, when that came out, you know, that
- 29:18was, that was obviously a huge deal.
- 29:20But you know, his press conference, I was not
- 29:22anticipating too much from it and I got a lot out of it.
- 29:25Like I got a lot of a lot of really positive vibes out of it.
- 29:30I I don't know if we're going to talk about like what we think
- 29:33next year is going to be, but you know, this is going to be a
- 29:38program that's rebuilding in a lot of ways.
- 29:40You're going to be keeping, you're going to probably be
- 29:43keeping a decent number of who you would determine to be maybe
- 29:46your star players. But there's a lot of people that
- 29:50you watch play K State football this year that are not playing K
- 29:54State football next year. And there's going to be a reason
- 29:58for that from a talent perspective and what the new
- 30:01coaching regime is going to think about the talent that's on
- 30:03this team right now. But there's going to be a lot of
- 30:06differences that you're going to see from this program that isn't
- 30:09necessarily going to mean this team is going to go nine and
- 30:15three under Colin Klein's first season.
- 30:18Like I I do think as a fan base, we may set up unfortunate
- 30:25expectations that Colin Klein is a savior in this program is
- 30:30going to have an incredible year next year.
- 30:34You know, you look at the schedule and yeah, like there's
- 30:37the potential, but I would have said that about this year's
- 30:39schedule for the most part too. So I, I, as we, I think for
- 30:46everybody who may be listening to this, the key thing is we're
- 30:49just going to have to wait a good amount of time to really
- 30:52see what we think this team is going to be #1 the coaching
- 30:55staff and who he brings in #2 is going to be who's transferring
- 30:58out, who are guys that we think maybe, you know, we, we think if
- 31:03Chris Kleinman was here, he might have stayed while he might
- 31:05be leaving now, you know, there might be a pretty significant
- 31:07number of people that are, that are leaving, but who's Colin
- 31:11Klein going to bring in? Like what, what are we going to
- 31:13see from the transfer portal? I think this team is going to
- 31:16look pretty different for next year.
- 31:18And that could be a good thing. But there's going to be some
- 31:20growing pains too. So I my expectations whether I,
- 31:25you know, do I want to set him extremely high for Colin Klein?
- 31:28And I think his long term success at the program is
- 31:32there's a high potential for that.
- 31:34But short term, there's going to be some growing pains that
- 31:36people are going to have to understand.
- 31:38Like it's going to be, it's going to be a tough Rd. for a
- 31:40little bit. I'm currently in the midst of
- 31:43teaching my 2 year old what patients means.
- 31:45So I I will be like what's patients means?
- 31:48And he says I wait and we're like, yes, that's that's what
- 31:52patients means. We need to reteach K State fans
- 31:55about patients because, yeah, we've we are used to these, you
- 32:00know, eight win, nine win, 10 win seasons under, under
- 32:02Kleiman. You know, four of the last five
- 32:05seasons we've had 99 wins or more or 4.
- 32:10For the last five season, we've had eight wins or more.
- 32:12So we're going to have to be patient with this if we want
- 32:15this higher to work out. We got to give him a long leash.
- 32:19We we got to take time. He has a the perfect vision, I
- 32:24think for this program that he mentioned in his press
- 32:26conference of marrying being cutting edge and leading edge
- 32:30with the NIL and the transfer portal and marrying that with
- 32:36hard nosed tough K State football like the what we all
- 32:40grew up watching, like the Josh Buell's of the world, that he
- 32:44wants to bring that edge back to K State.
- 32:47And, and based on what we saw this year, not something we were
- 32:51seeing in a lot of those games with K State football this
- 32:54season. And it's a new, it's a new era,
- 32:57It's a new world. He's going to have to change the
- 33:00way that we're doing things in a lot of regard.
- 33:02But he's going to be able to get the donor support and rally the
- 33:05troops in the fan base with the big money donors to bring in
- 33:09what he needs in order to attract the talent, in order to
- 33:12attract the coaching resources and everything that he needs
- 33:15necessary in order to, to to get to that vision.
- 33:18But it's going to take time. It's not going to happen
- 33:20overnight. So I would just urge K State
- 33:22bands who are listening to this to, to have some degree of
- 33:26patience. Like it doesn't mean we need to
- 33:28be OK with A5 and seven season next year, but we may be 7:00
- 33:32and 5:00 next year. That's that's OK.
- 33:35That's OK. OK, and I'll say this and I, I
- 33:37don't want to like throw a wet blanket on this whole
- 33:40conversation about Colin Klein because I think he's great.
- 33:43And there's the potential, like Matt said, the potential is
- 33:46there. And like Bob said, we need the,
- 33:49the, the leash to give him the room to, to grow into whatever
- 33:53he will become. But I in my brain, I see this
- 33:59there. There's one or two roads.
- 34:00I think he's either great, I don't think there's any middle
- 34:03row, I think he's great, or he's and I think there's a higher
- 34:08than 40% chance that he's Scott Frost.
- 34:13I think that's fair. And I I, you know, not a lot of
- 34:16people want to hear that, but there's a there is a better
- 34:20than, you know, not chance that he is our Scott Frost and you
- 34:26know, we get nothing done because he is our golden goose.
- 34:30He's the guy that we all clamored for and we want to give
- 34:33him that leash, but it could set us back farther than we
- 34:35expected. But that that is the risk that
- 34:38you have to take. Because I think the hot the
- 34:40upside is he like he said in his like you said, Bob, in his
- 34:45vision of what we are to this program, he's going to take us
- 34:47to places that we haven't been. And I think for a long time, no
- 34:52shots at Bill Snyder, no shots at obviously, I can't say that's
- 34:55about Bill Snyder. He did take us to places we
- 34:57never thought we'd go. Colin client, I mean, Chris
- 35:01Kleiman, no shots at him, but he kind of leveled us and raised
- 35:06the floor, but he didn't raise the ceiling all that all that
- 35:11much. And there's nothing wrong with
- 35:15that. But if like, like a lot of fans
- 35:18and a lot of us even sitting on this podcast, we want more.
- 35:21We, we expect a lot from our program and we want to see new
- 35:26things. And you have to take risks to do
- 35:27that. And maybe this guy is it, or
- 35:30maybe he's Scott Frost, you never know.
- 35:33So I, I think there's a better than 30% chance that he is Scott
- 35:38Frost. I mean, I think there's there's
- 35:40also the potential if we're like trying to compare coaches, he
- 35:44could be a Kenny Dillingham, right?
- 35:46You won, you're 1. Kenny Dillingham went 2-3 and
- 35:51nine. He went 3 and 9.
- 35:53Like you. He's coming in and having to
- 35:58rebuild into a program that he wants to be a coach of and
- 36:03that's building a culture and that is, you know, putting
- 36:07together a staff that believes in your vision and finding
- 36:11players that believe in that vision as well.
- 36:14And so I, I don't expect we're going to go 3:00 and 9:00 next
- 36:18year. I don't, you know, I could see
- 36:20us going 5:00 and 7:00. I could do that.
- 36:22I, I, I could see that. But I, I think Scott Frost is an
- 36:27interesting comparison. It is one where you have a guy
- 36:30who you know, starts off slow but then has some success, but
- 36:34then kind of you know, potentially he sees, you know,
- 36:39he sees himself in Nebraska and then just completely, you know,
- 36:42kind of tanks in Nebraska. This is I think how schools like
- 36:50us are going to hire moving forward.
- 36:52I think it's going to be younger coaches first time because I
- 36:59think programs feel taking out the call and climb plate for K
- 37:03State like history completely. You have a guy who won a
- 37:08conference championship as a coordinator with a Big 12
- 37:11school, has in a second year College Football Playoff.
- 37:15Like who knows what Texas A&M is going to do this year.
- 37:18He has a resume that would get him hired in in some places.
- 37:22Obviously South Florida was one of them, but you know, at the
- 37:28key state factor is going to give him a longer leash, but
- 37:33it's also going to give him some undue pressure.
- 37:36Unfortunately for him. Like I, I, I think, I, I, I
- 37:41that's, that's my, it's. Similar to Avery at quarterback,
- 37:43Avery's got more pressure at, at quarterback because he's the
- 37:46local kid, He's the blue chipper crude.
- 37:49And you know, we, we put more pressure on him than we did on a
- 37:52guy like Will Howard to. That's a totally fairpoint,
- 37:55Matt. And so I, I just think that for
- 37:57for Colin, there's going to be some undue pressure as an alum,
- 38:01you know, one of the most well known K state players to ever
- 38:05come out of this program that you're not leading it.
- 38:09So for as much as he's going to get a longer leash, I think he's
- 38:13also he's going to have this undue pressure that's going to
- 38:16come from the fan base early on, especially next year.
- 38:19You know, you keep Avery, you have Lincoln cure, who knows?
- 38:22Like you're going to have like these top what you would
- 38:25perceive in the program to be top level individual talents,
- 38:29But there's going to be a lot of guys we have no idea what
- 38:32they're going to be able to bring to the table next year
- 38:34because I think there's going to be a good amount of turnover.
- 38:36And so I think just we all have to fairly set expectations for
- 38:40this team knowing that maybe next year will be a struggle.
- 38:45But Colin Klein, if he's instilling what he believes are
- 38:48the values of his program, could be like a Kenny Dillingham for
- 38:51Year 2, had this 10 and two year win, the Big 12, you know, this
- 38:57and that, that we would all be like, absolutely, we wish that
- 39:01was us, you know, to be in that situation.
- 39:05I, I will say when I, when I did, you know, describe him as
- 39:09Scott Frost and it wasn't necessarily him as a coach, you
- 39:14know, I'm saying like I think the situations are similar.
- 39:19Scott Frost couldn't you know, he's had some success some
- 39:22places. He had a little bit of success
- 39:24at Nebraska, but I think of a lot of it was his own doing,
- 39:27personal reasons, things like that.
- 39:29I don't think any, anything like that would Colin Klein, he's got
- 39:33no skeletons as far as I can tell.
- 39:36So it's mostly like you were describing the pressure from the
- 39:40fan base, the pressure with the history of what he's already
- 39:43done at K State and he he's wanted so much and he's, you
- 39:50know, got such a high approval rating, just jumping in that
- 39:54maybe that pressure is there. But I think we would have gotten
- 39:57that pressure from anybody that we hired.
- 40:00If, if I'm being honest with myself, whether it was Colin
- 40:02Klein or anybody following up, just like following up Bill
- 40:07Snyder, following up Chris Kleinman, there is a a level
- 40:11that he set. That we we come to expect.
- 40:14So the pressure was going to be there regardless.
- 40:16Now whether it's increased, I don't know, but I think he does
- 40:19have a longer leash and you guys are, you guys are saying it
- 40:22perfect. Give him a little grace, let him
- 40:25do his magic because I think there is going to be more of an
- 40:29an overhaul than a lot of people expect.
- 40:33Yeah. And and that you also bring up a
- 40:35good point. I I do think a lot of programs
- 40:38like K State are going to be doing hiring younger guys,
- 40:41hiring younger coaching Staffs in general across the board.
- 40:45Because you look at a guy who won 6 Super Bowls get hired in
- 40:50Chapel Hill, NC and you see how big of a disaster that is.
- 40:54It's not about how good of a coach you are in some regard
- 40:57anymore. It's about what you're able to
- 40:59do with the infrastructure around you in a lot of cases.
- 41:02And it's not like Bill Belichick is going to be able to navigate
- 41:06this NIL, whatever. He's 70, what, 73 years old.
- 41:09So I, I think a lot of programs are going to go more in this
- 41:12route of younger guys who have more of a connection with the,
- 41:17with the, the age group that you're going out and recruiting
- 41:20to be part of your program. So that's, that's where we're at
- 41:24here. I don't, I, I see your, I see
- 41:27your private chat there, chef. I don't know if if my, my screen
- 41:30is blurring or not. Mine, it's not for me, it's not
- 41:33for me. But OK, all right, ideal staff
- 41:39make up. So when you look at what
- 41:41client's going to be putting together here, we've talked a
- 41:43little bit about the infrastructure around him being
- 41:47the nucleus of this whole thing. What are some names that you're
- 41:50watching for, some names that you would like to see?
- 41:52I've got some takes on this as well.
- 41:54And that I don't think it has to just be getting the band back
- 41:57together for for all these K State guys that have been in the
- 42:00program or been a part of the coaching staff like Stan Weber.
- 42:03I can get on board with that. But I don't think we need to be
- 42:07bringing back Clanderman necessarily.
- 42:10I want to see who else is out there in the talent pool.
- 42:13It's nothing against Clanderman. He may be the best name
- 42:15available. But I would like to have a
- 42:18broader search because I do feel like they stay has swung and
- 42:22missed on opportunities where Kleiman would just go out and
- 42:25hire his buddies, right? He would go out and hire Matt
- 42:27Wells to be the offensive coordinator instead of going
- 42:30after, say, the guy that was at Liberty two years ago who had
- 42:34that Cayden Salter offense cooking.
- 42:37I don't know what ended up happening to that guy, but he
- 42:39was one of the two names that was that was kind of talked
- 42:41about at the time. So I do think there have been
- 42:43opportunities for us to maybe hire some of those hotter names
- 42:46or or, you know, not just a buddy, right like that.
- 42:50That's been a huge indictment on climbing over the course of the
- 42:53last seven years that he was at K State.
- 42:55So curious your thoughts on ideal staff, make up some names
- 42:58that you're thinking about, your thoughts on the approach, who
- 43:01you would go after, that kind of thing.
- 43:04I'll say, OK, let's let's do that.
- 43:06Then let's break this down. I think you have to start with
- 43:09who do you want to bring back? Who do you want to retain?
- 43:13I think Lepak has a role, but I don't necessarily think it's
- 43:18with offensive line. I don't know if if he is the
- 43:22best offensive line coach. I mean, I didn't mind him with
- 43:24tight ends, but obviously he has a vision for himself where he
- 43:30wants to grow in the profession. And I don't think if you try to
- 43:35bring back Lepak, I don't think it's with offensive line.
- 43:37So is that a step back and is that something that he would be
- 43:42OK with doing? I don't know.
- 43:45I think a guy like Coach Wyatt, I mean, he's older, but he does
- 43:56have a true proven track record of getting the most out of his
- 44:01guys and finding gems and doing things like that.
- 44:04That I think is valuable. But then when you when you think
- 44:08about what Colin Klein is going to bring to as a head coach,
- 44:13Chris Klein had a set of recruiting base in the Iowa
- 44:20area, you know, Minnesota and North Dakota up Nebraska and
- 44:25things like that where he had recruiting stomping grounds that
- 44:29where he could, you know, bring in his guys because that they
- 44:32recruit from the same areas. They know the same areas very
- 44:35well. I don't know what Colin Klein
- 44:38recruiting background is where where does he recruit the best
- 44:41from? Is he a Texas guy now?
- 44:43Is he still Colorado touched in? Is he is he going to recruit
- 44:47locally hard enough? I don't know.
- 44:49So that that's where I would think of bring bringing in his
- 44:52staff who does who is somebody that he can lean on for
- 44:56recruiting that can that is still a sharp mine on the field.
- 45:01I think the new era football is also somebody that can tap into
- 45:06the portal guys. I know a lot of it is money and
- 45:09all that stuff and you you know, the reports are out there of him
- 45:13already solidifying his GM. But I think you still have to
- 45:18have somebody on the Scott of the the staff with a Taylor
- 45:22brat, because I think Taylor brat is obviously not going
- 45:24anywhere probably ever. If, if it was up to him and up
- 45:29to K state, really, I think he is K state through and through
- 45:33somebody that can get on there and help Colin Klein, a first,
- 45:36first time head coach recruit and bring in the talent.
- 45:39So I don't know necessarily position groups.
- 45:42I mean, obviously the names are floating out there and like you
- 45:45said, Bob, you don't the names that are floating out there.
- 45:48You don't want to put the band back together.
- 45:49But a lot of those guys were in the band.
- 45:52So I don't know. It's, it's, it's I would like to
- 45:55hear what Matt has to say because I, I'd, I'd piggyback
- 45:57probably on what Matt has to say for sure.
- 46:00I mean, I think the overall like theme should be you bring in the
- 46:04best guys you think are going to make a difference with the
- 46:07program. You know, if there are guys that
- 46:11are on staff right now that you feel like you're going to do
- 46:13that, great. You know, you brought up Brian
- 46:17Lepak. You know, for as much as I feel
- 46:21like the offensive line had its struggles this year, you know,
- 46:25you do wonder how much George Fitzpatrick not playing kind of
- 46:30played a part of of some of that and not having him this year.
- 46:35And, you know, you also put, you know, fact of the matter is it
- 46:38was his first year as the offensive line coach.
- 46:40You know, what is your two bring to that?
- 46:44I think he would be an important asset.
- 46:46You think about how well he worked with Klein in the 2022
- 46:49season as well as 2023 of, you know, kind of working up in the
- 46:55booth and, and kind of having that kind of lay the land of,
- 46:59you know, what's going on on the field.
- 47:01I think he would be a loss unless you feel like you can
- 47:05bring somebody in that's better than him.
- 47:08I think out of everybody on the coaching staff, you would be the
- 47:10one guy that I I think would be a really good one to retain.
- 47:15You know, Brian Anderson's another one.
- 47:17You know, I, in the grand scheme of things, you think about the,
- 47:20the running back situation at K State, I feel like Brian
- 47:24Anderson's done a pretty good job, you know, with, with that.
- 47:28I believe he's been with the program since climbing started
- 47:30in 2019. You think about that 2019 season
- 47:33and the, you know, the, the different guys that he, you
- 47:38know, had to bring in and kind of get together the hodgepodge,
- 47:42obviously Du Swan and his development, DJ Giddens and how
- 47:46he developed. You know, I feel Joe Jackson
- 47:49towards the end of the season, once, you know, the scheme kind
- 47:52of was more pointed towards him, had a lot more success.
- 47:56You know, he would be an interesting guy that I think
- 47:58Colin Klein could see the benefit of having, you know,
- 48:01just the experience in the program.
- 48:05But I will say this with some of the names that we're hearing,
- 48:10we've heard the GM name that sounds like that's going to
- 48:13happen. We hear Stanton Weber from
- 48:16Toledo, who is considered, you know, one of the top special
- 48:20teams coaches in the country. He's done a really good job at
- 48:23Toledo. We've heard some of these other
- 48:25names from Texas A and MI Am of the opinion that if you are
- 48:30bringing in guys from a program that has been in the top ten
- 48:33this year and is going to the College Football Playoff and has
- 48:35worked with your head coach, I think there's a good opportunity
- 48:39to keep that rolling. Especially with some of these
- 48:42guys who are going to be a little bit younger, a little bit
- 48:45less experienced, yes, but sometimes that brings more
- 48:48hunger. You know, that brings just more
- 48:50of an opportunity to prove themselves.
- 48:51And you know, we've heard some names of defensive coordinator
- 48:56like Jordan Peterson, the offensive coordinator position I
- 48:59feel like we haven't heard too much about.
- 49:00That'll be a very interesting one number one to see if Colin
- 49:02will be actually calling plays, but who might be targeted there?
- 49:08We've heard Josh Buford, who I believe in the past has had a
- 49:11pretty good relationship with Avery Johnson.
- 49:13I think that would be a pretty good, you know, one to keep kind
- 49:17of, you know, on the on the on the staff.
- 49:20You know, he's he's someone that's worked with your starting
- 49:22quarterback. So I the the thing that like
- 49:27boggles my mind and maybe it shouldn't is like, oh, let's
- 49:29bring in Tyler Lockett. Oh, what's Jordy Nelson up to?
- 49:33Like, let's, let's bring in these K State people who have no
- 49:37experience coaching whatsoever. Like, give me a break.
- 49:41Come on. This isn't the K State family
- 49:44Facebook. Yeah, like, like it.
- 49:46It just, it boggles my mind that people think, Oh yeah, let's
- 49:50bring in past K State people to come coach.
- 49:52Yeah, maybe they'll be good coaches.
- 49:53Who knows? It's the it's the same people
- 49:55who think that we should bring in Steve Henson at head coach
- 49:58after he totally, like totally failed as a head coach at what,
- 50:02UTSA? OK, but but also, there's the
- 50:05other side of the coin to a guy like Zach Hanson.
- 50:08Who? That's different?
- 50:09Yes. No, no.
- 50:10But I mean, he's a former K Stater that played.
- 50:13He was good. Buddy.
- 50:15But you got to find the fine line.
- 50:16You got to find I think. Zach Hansen's AUSC like he has
- 50:20coaching experience. Oh, like let's Darren's rolls
- 50:23another that's another name like where yes, they've had they have
- 50:28been instrumental parts in K State's football program in the
- 50:31past, But where's the coaching experience And why do you want
- 50:34to make K State the first stop for these people?
- 50:37Like if they want to coach, there are plenty of other
- 50:41opportunities to grow your coaching ability then coming in
- 50:45with a powerful school and yeah, here we go.
- 50:50Look at what's happening. Look at what's happening in
- 50:53Boulder, Co. That's all I have to say about
- 50:55that. You've got guys like Warren Sapp
- 50:57coming in being a first time, a first time position coach just
- 51:01because he's buddies with Coach Prime and look what his
- 51:04offensive or defensive line looks like.
- 51:07It's not like it's it's out. There in the world Dion brought
- 51:10in Brennan Marion, which I think would have been a very
- 51:12intriguing offensive coordinator pick all things considered like
- 51:17that was actually a good move. But his his past assistant coach
- 51:21picks have not been great. So it'll be interesting to see
- 51:25what what it goes. But like again, Colin Klein is
- 51:31going to build his own vision and identity for K state
- 51:35football. It is not necessarily going to
- 51:38be 2012 K State football and it shouldn't because the game is
- 51:42completely different in 2026 than 2012 and Colin Klein was
- 51:47playing. But the fact of the matter is in
- 51:51these days, you need to get the best people that you think are
- 51:55going to help you build a program.
- 51:57And it isn't necessarily people that have put on AK State
- 52:00uniform in the past. It's going to be people who have
- 52:03experience coaching, who have experience understanding the
- 52:07ramifications of what college football is in 2025.
- 52:10And that is who I want Colin Klein to be hiring.
- 52:13I want Colin Klein hiring who he feels to be the best people for
- 52:17the job. Not if they have AK State
- 52:20connection in the past. So if we don't hire anybody from
- 52:23the 2025 K State coaching staff, and Colin Klein believes that's
- 52:28is best for the program, then as a fan, that is what I believe is
- 52:32the best for the program. Are you just telling me to roll
- 52:35over and accept it? Is that what you're telling me
- 52:37just. Roll over.
- 52:39I, I, I, we are dumb people like, and that's the nicest
- 52:43thing I'm saying like what? Like we, we are providing our
- 52:48opinions about what we see. We are not involved in the
- 52:51insurance and outs of what's going on.
- 52:53And like I just people number one, people have to wait and
- 52:59give this time because Colin is also doing 2 jobs at the same
- 53:03time right? Like Texas A&M plays not next
- 53:06weekend 2 weekends from now they play 2 weekends from.
- 53:10Now they play the 19th, 19th. Or the 20th in the College
- 53:12Football Playoff. So Colin has to deal with that
- 53:16and then he's going to have to deal with hiring coaching staff
- 53:18and doing all this other stuff. But yes, we're probably putting,
- 53:22I'm putting blind trust in Colin Klein.
- 53:24But as we should be at the grand scheme of things, we should be
- 53:27like if he feels that Joe Clanderman or any of the Wells
- 53:33or Van Malone or this and that is not going to be a good fit
- 53:37for the K State program starting at 2026, I have to believe that.
- 53:44Any of the wells. Yeah.
- 53:46Does Colin Klein call place? I'm going to say.
- 53:55Because I've never seen, I mean, obviously he's never called
- 53:58plays from the sideline and there's no chance he Joe pause
- 54:01it and goes up to the booth to call plays as the head coach.
- 54:05So. I am going to say no.
- 54:07I, I would agree with that as well.
- 54:09I think he, I, I think he hands the reins over as well.
- 54:12I, I really do, because I, I think one of his biggest
- 54:16strengths is kind of seeing the field and making decisions by
- 54:20seeing the field. And yes, it's a little bit
- 54:22tougher on the sideline, but number one, I think it'll be
- 54:27obviously dependent on who he hires as an offensive
- 54:30coordinator. But if he has an offensive
- 54:31coordinator with a similar vision to him, I I truly believe
- 54:37he will consider letting the offensive coordinator that he
- 54:40hires call the place. Collin is going to put his
- 54:44thoughts and what he wants the offense to look like when he's
- 54:48working with whoever he hires. But I, I really think that's one
- 54:53of Collins like biggest keys and, and how he's been
- 54:56successful is he sees the field really well and he sees the
- 55:01like, what the momentum is like. And he and and you think about
- 55:04his play calls and, and certain game.
- 55:06Like we, you know, there are games in 2022 and 2023 where
- 55:11we're like, what's going on here?
- 55:12Like why is this this? But for the most part, he did a
- 55:16really good job of putting in plays for the right times, like
- 55:21to, to get us in situations, But I, I really think he sees the
- 55:25field really well. And when he was working with
- 55:28Brian Lepak, you know, I thought that was a really good combo
- 55:30that was working up there. So I would not be surprised if
- 55:34we see him ceding the play calling to an offensive
- 55:38coordinator that he hires and he trusts.
- 55:40I I would not be surprised. I just don't know who that is.
- 55:45I would love to know who that is and we're bound to find out
- 55:48soon. I guess my last question on
- 55:52Colin Klein is what do you think is a successful year one for
- 55:58Colin Klein? What would you deem as a success
- 56:01coming out of, you know, the next the next 12 games?
- 56:05Let me look up the schedule real quick.
- 56:07Unless somebody has it on tap. Dude, the schedule here here is
- 56:12the sad part. Here's the thing.
- 56:14Here's the thing, the schedule is extremely attainable.
- 56:17If you think about you don't play Texas Tech, you're not
- 56:22playing BYU. Texas Texas Good next year.
- 56:25Well, I I think there's an assumption that they're going to
- 56:28be good. They're not playing BYU.
- 56:33We have Tulane again. We have Tulane again.
- 56:35We've got. Washington State Nichols
- 56:37Washington State Tulane at Arizona at Cincinnati at
- 56:41Colorado at Iowa State Home versus Don't.
- 56:44You don't. We don't.
- 56:46We have to reschedule the Washington State game or get a
- 56:48different non conference opponent.
- 56:50No. Why?
- 56:51I thought because they're not power 4 anymore.
- 56:55Well, technically, technically they're in the PAC 12 next year,
- 56:58but I I don't believe we are rescheduling that game like the
- 57:05so yeah, so you said like away games Arizona State at
- 57:07Cincinnati at Colorado at Iowa State at TCU home games,
- 57:12Arizona, Houston, Oklahoma State, K UI.
- 57:18Mean, don't get me wrong, I mean there's some dubs on that
- 57:22schedule. That's, I mean, maybe Oklahoma
- 57:25State's better. I think they can't get any
- 57:27worse. Houston probably is going to
- 57:30have things rolling. Houston will be, but then then
- 57:33you have them at home, which is good.
- 57:34Arizona, I mean, they were pretty tough this year.
- 57:38But you know. Then they'll yeah, we'll have
- 57:40them at home. But it's also the a new era
- 57:43quarterback. No, no more NOAA Fafida.
- 57:45That's been the, you know, the presence there for so long.
- 57:50I think the home games are very obtainable.
- 57:53You know, 5 away games in Big 12 play not great.
- 57:58You don't like to see that. But I think the non con you have
- 58:03to get it done. You know, Tulane, Tulane losing
- 58:07Summerall they're they're going to be in turmoil.
- 58:10Washington state just they lost their coach.
- 58:12I think they lost. Their four day or something they
- 58:14did. Their head coach is now the head
- 58:16coach that I received, so we're going to see him.
- 58:19Hold on. Yeah, Jimmy Rogers, who is did.
- 58:23You not realize Matt Campbell's at Penn State now?
- 58:26No, I didn't know that, but I didn't know they hired a Jimmy.
- 58:28Rogers from Washington state, Is that fucking?
- 58:31Jamie Jamie Pollard is out here texting him good luck before
- 58:35every game, going back to his time at South Dakota State.
- 58:38Arizona State rebuilding. They won't have Levitt.
- 58:41They won't have Jordan Tyson. Cincinnati.
- 58:44No Brennan Sarsby, Colorado, who knows, Iowa State potentially
- 58:51could be rebuilding if like Rockabeck doesn't come back.
- 58:55TCU will be a tough game. TCU will be a tough game.
- 58:58So that's like. But yes, it is obtainable and
- 59:01for and to get to the point of the question at hand, what is
- 59:06success? And maybe it's not a record
- 59:07thing. Who knows what the if, if record
- 59:10will really even be determining factor and success under Colin
- 59:15Klein in the first season. I mean, we all love the win, but
- 59:18I mean at the, at the crux of it is, is his, is his message
- 59:24getting across? Is the fans are the fans?
- 59:27If the fans are seeing it, then you know, you know what success.
- 59:32But if, if we're not seeing anything, if we're seeing the,
- 59:35the lack of discipline very similar to what was happening
- 59:38this season, I, I could see, you know, I don't think record will
- 59:44be that important. But with the, with the schedule
- 59:46the way it is, I could see if we're talking just merely about
- 59:52the, the, the record, I think six wins is very attainable.
- 59:57I don't see any reason why you can't win the first three games.
- 1:00:00It's so funny because Nichols was calling Chris Kleinman's
- 1:00:05first game as AK State head coach and now it's be Colin
- 1:00:10Klein's, which is very, very full circle.
- 1:00:13That's really cool. So yeah, I think you go 3 and O
- 1:00:18and then however they lay out the the conference schedule,
- 1:00:21which will be important. I think we, I think that's one
- 1:00:23of my favorite episodes, is breaking down the schedule and
- 1:00:27seeing where it goes and how the things set up.
- 1:00:30Because you know, there's going to be some Friday games in
- 1:00:32there. It's going to get weird.
- 1:00:33So you got to find out if we can avoid those landmines and maybe
- 1:00:37Colin Klein gets off hot and then it just never turns back.
- 1:00:42I think you make a good point about like the record maybe, you
- 1:00:46know, does this team show fight in all the games?
- 1:00:49Maybe that's the key thing now. I mean, they did show fight in a
- 1:00:54lot of the games this year, but they just couldn't finish.
- 1:00:57So maybe it's how do they finish?
- 1:00:59I think 7:00 and 5:00. You know, if you show a game
- 1:01:02improvement from LAT from this past season, I think that would
- 1:01:06be a really good, you know, start from an improvement
- 1:01:09perspective. It is hard to tell because you
- 1:01:12don't know who's going to be on this team.
- 1:01:14You know, if you roll back in offense with Avery, Joe Jackson,
- 1:01:17Jace Brown, Jaron Tibbs and Oakley Cure, then then it
- 1:01:27probably changes and but then the defense, you just don't know
- 1:01:31if the defense is how the defense is going to be.
- 1:01:33Right. But we also said this at the
- 1:01:34beginning of this season. And it just so happens that, you
- 1:01:38know, you're you're going to be rolling out a new offense.
- 1:01:40You're going to be rolling more than likely, if you don't bring
- 1:01:42Clanderman back, you're going to be rolling out a new defense.
- 1:01:45Everything is going to be new. And that's exactly what bit us
- 1:01:48this season. Obviously the schedule was a
- 1:01:50little bit different and you know, we don't know necessarily
- 1:01:52all of what the schedule is, but I know we won't be in.
- 1:01:55God damn, Ireland to start the season off.
- 1:01:59So I guess I guess it is is it is a improvement, but all the
- 1:02:05new things that takes time. The team needs to to gel
- 1:02:09together. Things are you don't like
- 1:02:11change, and that's exactly what happened with this past season.
- 1:02:14New things happened. We thought we dust.
- 1:02:17We put them under the rug like, you know, new defense, who cares
- 1:02:22whatever. And and it came back and bit us.
- 1:02:25Oh, we have a new training regime this season.
- 1:02:29We lost our strength coach, man, talk about it, talk about it.
- 1:02:34And I don't know if we could pull seven wins out with a first
- 1:02:38time head coach who might not even be calling plays.
- 1:02:41And that's his best thing about him.
- 1:02:42So I don't know. Who knows?
- 1:02:45I don't know if. You get coach true back,
- 1:02:47anything is possible yes. So I the last topic related to
- 1:02:54football is the bowl game. So case they did opt out of
- 1:02:57their bowl game, it was looking like it could have been Liberty
- 1:03:01Bowl, Independence Bowl, probably one of those two
- 1:03:04options. I heard Armed Forces, but did
- 1:03:07you really want to play in a Liberty Bowl game against Navy
- 1:03:09again as a bookend to Kleiman's career, had he not just walked
- 1:03:13out of the door that press conference never to see
- 1:03:15Manhattan ever again because he went straight to Fargo, ND?
- 1:03:21But cats are fined $500,000. And just to clarify this,
- 1:03:25because I got a couple of questions about this from
- 1:03:27people, shout out to Nate Fafflik.
- 1:03:29This is not coming from existing funds.
- 1:03:32This is basically a claw back on future conference payouts from
- 1:03:36revenue sharing amongst the Big 12 schools.
- 1:03:39So it's not something that you're having to cut a check to
- 1:03:44big debt of your mark and say, hey, here's half $1,000,000.
- 1:03:47It is more so hey, we get X, you know, thirty $40 million a year
- 1:03:53from the Big 12. Half a million of that is coming
- 1:03:55out of probably our next check for for, you know, July 1st,
- 1:03:59whenever that gets paid out. So you get a fine for it, I
- 1:04:02guess reactions to this. Iowa State also opts out of
- 1:04:06their bowl game. Notre Dame opts out of their
- 1:04:08bowl game, which is a very different story than this.
- 1:04:11But I, I understand the reasoning behind this of, hey,
- 1:04:14you, you don't know if you're going to have a roster more than
- 1:04:1640 guys. You got a bunch of injuries, you
- 1:04:19got the transfer portal, you've got a coaching change.
- 1:04:21Let's just not do it this year. I, I understand that from a
- 1:04:25program perspective, but I also get that there's a lot of
- 1:04:28nostalgia for people with bowl games.
- 1:04:29I enjoy watching bowl games. I enjoy doing our bowl pick them
- 1:04:32every year that we do. So I, I see both sides of it
- 1:04:35really. And and I'm not going to
- 1:04:38demonize the program one way or another for making this
- 1:04:41decision, but but I'm curious y'all's reactions on this.
- 1:04:45Well, it's been very interesting to see the kind of the
- 1:04:50volatility of both sides of the argument on this one.
- 1:04:54I, you know, originally when, when the rumor had come out, I
- 1:05:00was somewhat kind of thrilled about it because I look at it
- 1:05:04from just like the fan perspective and I think about
- 1:05:08like the LSU game in 2021. And that's what a lot of people
- 1:05:11or I feel like a good amount of people are looking at.
- 1:05:13Well, LSU played us with this and that like it was an
- 1:05:16enjoyable game for us. It would not be an enjoyable
- 1:05:19game as as a fan of the team that you know, has half your
- 1:05:23team playing and you know, half your coaching staff there.
- 1:05:28You know, despite the fact that what you want the bowl to entail
- 1:05:32is like the practice and getting your guys reps, but your guys
- 1:05:37are getting reps with a program that's going to look completely
- 1:05:41different in a month from an offensive perspective, defensive
- 1:05:46perspective, like everything's going to be different.
- 1:05:47So, you know, what are you really practicing?
- 1:05:51You know, you're practicing like you're going to the weight room
- 1:05:53and you're, you know, doing this and that.
- 1:05:55Well, I, I would imagine these guys have the ability to go to
- 1:05:58the weight room right now if they wanted to, you know, to be
- 1:06:01working out. So for me, I, I was, I was fine
- 1:06:05with it. You know, I do love watching us
- 1:06:09playing a bowl game every year. Like obviously, you know, it's
- 1:06:11very fun part whether the outcome of the game is good or
- 1:06:15not. You know, I've seen in person
- 1:06:17typically is not I would have not wanted to play a Navy team
- 1:06:21in Liberty Bowl. I would have not wanted to play,
- 1:06:24you know, a team in a in a conference, you know, Kennesaw
- 1:06:28State or something like that who has had a great year and, you
- 1:06:31know, sees this as an opportunity to be the power four
- 1:06:35team. Like I, I just don't know if we,
- 1:06:38I don't know if that the program really had the had the wants to
- 1:06:45play in a game. And, and for me, you know, it's
- 1:06:48not my opinion, like it shouldn't be my opinion.
- 1:06:50Like if if the guys feel like they can't put a team together
- 1:06:54that's going to be successful when, you know, wearing K state
- 1:06:58stuff and representing K state, then all right.
- 1:07:02Yeah, I it's about the players and about the coaches.
- 1:07:06I mean, it's just every person that's involved with K State, I
- 1:07:10think they have to look out for themselves individually when
- 1:07:14things like this happen. It's a new era of football
- 1:07:18players. You want to get paid.
- 1:07:20You want the best opportunity. You're you know, you kind of
- 1:07:23know who the head coach is going to be, but you got to be
- 1:07:26prepared for things that are coming down the line.
- 1:07:31So coaches who, who would even coach the bowl game if we did
- 1:07:35play. So that's that's a thing because
- 1:07:37like all these guys, I mean, maybe they show a little bit of
- 1:07:40fight if they can coach this team into a bowl game win or
- 1:07:43whatever. And they just, you know, you
- 1:07:45show your abilities for coaching during the bowl game, but you've
- 1:07:50already had that, you know what's on tape.
- 1:07:52So you just get prepared individually for maybe making
- 1:07:56contact with people in the industry of where you could
- 1:07:59possibly land if you're not with K State.
- 1:08:01So you've got to get all that in motion.
- 1:08:04And I don't blame them for, you know, not participating in the
- 1:08:07the Independence Bowl and Shreveport versus Louisiana Tech
- 1:08:11at home. Like, who the hell wants to play
- 1:08:13that game? I would like to watch it.
- 1:08:16But, you know, if we're going to get trounced and we don't have
- 1:08:20the the amount of players that we need and like Matt said, what
- 1:08:23are we practicing for? Because we're not going to be
- 1:08:27running this scheme next year. I mean, what, what what's the
- 1:08:30point of it other than, you know, fan service?
- 1:08:33And and I think it's a lot, a lot of it has to do with the
- 1:08:36bowls too, themselves. I mean, that's the state of
- 1:08:40college football that we're in. I mean, it's mostly playoff
- 1:08:42football driven. These bowls are, you know, just
- 1:08:47advertising basically, and that's all it is.
- 1:08:51It's an exhibition. So what?
- 1:08:53What can these bulls provide a team that you know, doesn't
- 1:08:56really have any incentive to go there, so maybe they start
- 1:09:03stealing out cash I. Don't know I I mean it should be
- 1:09:07it should be like players era for basketball, right like.
- 1:09:10No. I yeah, that's a.
- 1:09:11Perfect analogy. I think I think bowl games, if
- 1:09:14you want guys to play and care and not opt out, you should
- 1:09:19provide an IO like OK now. OK, go, go ahead.
- 1:09:22Go ahead. Sorry.
- 1:09:22I, no, I, I, I mean, I think that's the next step.
- 1:09:26I think some bowl games may get left out of that situation by
- 1:09:29not being able to provide that. But like for K State and Iowa
- 1:09:34State to opt out. And then obviously Notre Dame,
- 1:09:36you know, is a a huge name of opting out of a bowl game Like
- 1:09:40we've seen for the past handful of years.
- 1:09:42We have players that opt out. So you're you're not playing a
- 1:09:45bowl game at full strength with the squad that you had that year
- 1:09:49for the most part, typically. But the next step has to be
- 1:09:54providing an NIL payout to the winner and the loser of the
- 1:09:59game. I mean, I, I, I just think
- 1:10:02that's a, that has to be the next step for some of these bowl
- 1:10:05games to succeed. You know, if the College
- 1:10:08Football Playoff, like isn't going to adjust, you know, if it
- 1:10:12goes to 16 teams, whatever, you're still leaving out a bunch
- 1:10:15of teams that would qualify for a bowl.
- 1:10:19Yeah, OK. Now, now if you're ready for
- 1:10:21some tinfoil hat and not necessary, you know, just my
- 1:10:26vision of what college football could be and what what post
- 1:10:30season could be. Now get with me for a second.
- 1:10:34Not necessarily teams anymore. I think the team bowl system is
- 1:10:40dead. I think that is very, you know,
- 1:10:43whatever. I think we have players that
- 1:10:48want to make names for themselves that not necessarily
- 1:10:51are done with college football that can return next year for
- 1:10:55college football. I think we have things like
- 1:10:57multiple All American Fantasy draft football, very Pro Bowl
- 1:11:02esque. You draft three players from
- 1:11:05Kansas State, you draft a couple players from Iowa State and you
- 1:11:10you build this collective of a Big 12 collective team.
- 1:11:15And then we put those teams on the field and we play that game.
- 1:11:20Now I know it's going to be very Pro Bowl like Pro Bowls from the
- 1:11:24early 2000s were fun. People were hitting, they were
- 1:11:28doing all those things. And if you pay these players now
- 1:11:33you're getting a more of a spectacle instead of 1/2 ass
- 1:11:38team that doesn't necessarily want to be out there.
- 1:11:40But if you have a a team of four stars, let's say Avery Johnson
- 1:11:48gets drafted into this and he's throwing to another Big 12
- 1:11:52receiver, but he's getting paid money to do it.
- 1:11:55I think that would bring more eyeballs to fans and that would
- 1:12:01bring more, not necessarily more money to the team, but it would
- 1:12:05give us a reason to watch things in the postseason now smite me
- 1:12:11down. But I think this might happen in
- 1:12:13the future. I'm just trying to think of how
- 1:12:16the logistics works to where. No, I mean.
- 1:12:18Where 3K state players are getting selected to some All
- 1:12:21Star team to. Play So it's the Senior Bowl,
- 1:12:23no? Exactly.
- 1:12:25You put the Senior Bowl, but players that don't lose
- 1:12:27eligibility and that that that still have eligibility to play
- 1:12:31and will be back at K State and hopefully or whatever.
- 1:12:34But this is even more of a reason they wear that K State
- 1:12:37helmet out there, but they still have time to put themselves into
- 1:12:42the transfer window. This is a it's just an exciting
- 1:12:46time for individual players. It's a little crazy, but I still
- 1:12:50think I would TuneIn to see where Avery Johnson is playing
- 1:12:53on a selective All Star team. And you can have four or five of
- 1:12:58these games if you really want to get crazy, call them whatever
- 1:13:01you want, put whatever slapstick brand you want on the side of
- 1:13:06it. But if Kate Avery Johnson.
- 1:13:10Skyline Chili Bowl. Yeah, the remember when we named
- 1:13:14bowls? That was fun.
- 1:13:16Why not do that with this? But it's it's an All Star style
- 1:13:20and Avery Johnson is wearing the power cat helmet out there and
- 1:13:24he is selected to an All Star team.
- 1:13:26I think it would be fun. I think it would be good for our
- 1:13:30brand. I think it would be good for an
- 1:13:32individual's brand. And if he wants to transfer cuz
- 1:13:35he showed out and he put 303 touchdowns in the All Star game
- 1:13:39and somebody calls him from Bama that wants to have him, then
- 1:13:42that's good for him individually.
- 1:13:43But you know, I think it's worth it because I think that's, I
- 1:13:47think that's where we're going because the the teams are just
- 1:13:49opting out and we're having to pay money.
- 1:13:52I don't know. I that's where I think I think
- 1:13:54would be more fun and more indicative, not indicative, more
- 1:13:58prosperous for the offseason instead of just having a 5 and 7
- 1:14:03Rice team play another five and seven team and expect me to
- 1:14:06watch that. I'm not going to.
- 1:14:08I mean, I'm, I'm going to laugh at this now.
- 1:14:10I, I, I do not think this is a great idea at all, but this is
- 1:14:13going to happen in three years because this is something that
- 1:14:16chef dreaming up and it's just going to happen.
- 1:14:18Oh my God, there's era was effectively chef's idea.
- 1:14:21Oh my. God no it wasn't.
- 1:14:23I don't get if this happens. I need, I want, I want I.
- 1:14:27Want the the Dubai tournament? The Dubai tournament was Chef's
- 1:14:30idea. Let's go play basketball in the
- 1:14:32Middle East and get guys Let's get let's get a teams and travel
- 1:14:37them out to the Middle East for a week, play basketball and then
- 1:14:40come back to. The game in Dublin, Ireland and
- 1:14:42football's going to screw up your season just thinking about.
- 1:14:44Dubai, let me let me tell you, I'm.
- 1:14:47Telling you, I think the All Star, an All Star, an All
- 1:14:50American select team is, is something that can very much
- 1:14:55happen. I you know what, I appreciate
- 1:15:00your ideas. Could you imagine, could you
- 1:15:04imagine if like the All Big 12, like you just put the All Big 12
- 1:15:07team, all the underclassmen? Well, because I think the
- 1:15:10seniors might be doing something or if they have other
- 1:15:12obligations in the playoffs, whatever.
- 1:15:14You can opt out of it, whatever. But if you are an all, all Big
- 1:15:1712 team, you put an all Big 12 team versus an all SEC team and
- 1:15:22have it as as a game or an all ACC team versus an all Big 10
- 1:15:26team, whatever you want to do. But I think it would be fun.
- 1:15:29I think it would, it would build the brands of some of the
- 1:15:32schools, have interviews behind the scenes.
- 1:15:35I think there's a lot of stuff that can be done with this, this
- 1:15:38idea, and it just came out of my brain, not just now.
- 1:15:42I've been thinking about this for a little bit.
- 1:15:45All right. What a beautiful brain you have.
- 1:15:47All right, that's going to do it for the football pod for this
- 1:15:51week. We had so much to talk about.
- 1:15:54There's so much more to talk about, so we're going to go
- 1:15:57ahead and drop for now. But before we get out of here,
