- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Walk the Pod, your daily walking
- 0:14Speaker 1: show where I take my podcast for a You're very
- 0:18Speaker 1: welcome along. This is episode 6, series 65 of the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Daily Walking Podcast that tempts you away from your desk
- 0:24Speaker 1: at lunchtime to walk in nature for just 10 minutes.
- 0:28Speaker 1: This series we're talking about confidence and today a voice
- 0:31Speaker 1: note from supreme cross-border selector Nige in northern Spain talking
- 0:36Speaker 1: about how there are levels to confidence and my response
- 0:42Speaker 1: borrowed from Anna Devere Smith's wonderful book Letters to a
- 0:45Speaker 1: Young Artist and What we can do when we're at
- 0:49Speaker 1: one of the lower levels of confidence. Welcome to Walk
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Pod.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Morning, Rach. Nige here. Sending a voice note, record note.
- 1:10Speaker 2: What's it called?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Voice note?
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, recorded voice note, I suppose. Walk and report. from
- 1:15Speaker 2: uh spain because i'm walking my two dogs here on
- 1:17Speaker 2: a slightly murky gray sunday morning thank you for the
- 1:21Speaker 2: first week of the new series on confidence very good
- 1:24Speaker 2: i hope you enjoyed the i have confidence in me
- 1:27Speaker 2: song by maria the mountains um yeah and i was
- 1:32Speaker 2: thinking two things to offer as as you refer to
- 1:34Speaker 2: me as cross-border selector i'm currently in spain and trying
- 1:37Speaker 2: to do some djing uh that i could talk about
- 1:39Speaker 2: confidence as it relates to foreign language spanish and djing
- 1:43Speaker 2: really so And I wonder whether you would address and
- 1:47Speaker 2: talk about confidence in terms of levels. So both of
- 1:51Speaker 2: these two things, I think about the sort of beginning
- 1:53Speaker 2: level when you start a foreign language. I remember when
- 1:55Speaker 2: our kids and me, but when our kids first came
- 1:59Speaker 2: out to Spain and there was a confidence thing about
- 2:02Speaker 2: whether they could manage to say they wanted an orange Fanta,
- 2:06Speaker 2: which is much harder than asking for a lemon Fanta.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So they were trying to say Fanta Naranja to a
- 2:11Speaker 2: waiter and which you need quite a lot of confidence
- 2:13Speaker 2: as a kid particularly even as an adult to have
- 2:15Speaker 2: a go at rather than fanta limon which they would
- 2:18Speaker 2: generally fall back on and i remember trying to get
- 2:21Speaker 2: to the point when i'd be confident to ask for
- 2:22Speaker 2: la cuenta for the bill you know and it's just
- 2:25Speaker 2: interesting isn't it when you've got a you know what
- 2:27Speaker 2: you're trying to say but you're not confident about how
- 2:29Speaker 2: it's going to come out and that's very much kind
- 2:31Speaker 2: of level one and then for years i was on
- 2:34Speaker 2: a sort of holiday level of spanish so being able
- 2:37Speaker 2: to ask for beers and coffee is fine certain phrases
- 2:40Speaker 2: were you know very confident in but But then, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 2: trying to go into any other more complicated conversation was
- 2:48Speaker 2: always harder. And then as you go up the levels,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I remember being able to cope with going to
- 2:55Speaker 2: a DIY shop, a bit like a home base, and
- 2:58Speaker 2: ask for different types of wood, timber that I needed
- 3:01Speaker 2: to buy for a project in the garden. I think
- 3:03Speaker 2: it was around lockdown. But that was quite an interesting
- 3:06Speaker 2: level up in confidence. Whereas I'm still not at the
- 3:10Speaker 2: level of really being comfortable to have phone calls in Spanish.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That's very difficult. Um, and things like that. So yeah,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I think there's definitely a levels thing as confidence grows.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You always talk about that to me, confidence growing and yeah, DJing.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I don't know if I could call out such specific levels,
- 3:24Speaker 2: but it's definitely a similar concept for me. Um, um,
- 3:27Speaker 2: and I'm at a level now where I'm trying to decide,
- 3:30Speaker 2: do I have the confidence for certain types of gigs,
- 3:32Speaker 2: certain types of approaches of venues, um, So it's an
- 3:37Speaker 2: interesting kind of bit at the moment, whereas I definitely
- 3:39Speaker 2: got confident with a certain level of things I've been
- 3:41Speaker 2: doing in the UK recently, all the previous gigs in Spain.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So yeah, interesting, interesting navigating the levels and growing in confidence,
- 3:50Speaker 2: you know? Okay, thanks a lot. See you, bye.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Thank you, Nige. Very interesting thoughts there, taking us off
- 3:59Speaker 1: in new directions, which I really appreciate. Confidence has levels, absolutely.
- 4:05Speaker 1: good examples there and I certainly recognize that different levels
- 4:12Speaker 1: of confidence with different things and I wanted to bring
- 4:17Speaker 1: you Anna Deavere Smith's thoughts on confidence because in her
- 4:23Speaker 1: book Letters to a Young Artist which I think is
- 4:25Speaker 1: based on Raina Maria Rilke to a young artist. Rilke
- 4:30Speaker 1: wrote real letters to a real young artist. I think
- 4:33Speaker 1: Anna Deavere Smith is sort of combining people who've asked
- 4:38Speaker 1: her questions over the years and responding to them in
- 4:41Speaker 1: her letters. And one of the letters is called Confidence.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And in it, she says, you asked me, meaning all
- 4:50Speaker 1: of the young artists she's ever spoken to, how to
- 4:56Speaker 1: build confidence, how to work on confidence. And at the
- 5:02Speaker 1: time when she's responding to these questions, real or imagined,
- 5:06Speaker 1: she's in Gooding in Idaho, going to rodeos with Brent Williams,
- 5:14Speaker 1: who is a bull rider. And she brings some thoughts
- 5:17Speaker 1: from the bull rider on confidence, which is quite interesting.
- 5:21Speaker 1: So I'm going to read you this letter and hopefully
- 5:24Speaker 1: it'll be helpful. The goal of a bull rider is
- 5:27Speaker 1: to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds. He's
- 5:31Speaker 1: then evaluated by how well he rode. He needs a
- 5:34Speaker 1: good animal for that. By good, I mean not an
- 5:38Speaker 1: easy animal, but one that gives a rough ride. The
- 5:40Speaker 1: bull rider is evaluated on the roughness of the ride
- 5:43Speaker 1: and how he deals with it. I like the way
- 5:46Speaker 1: Brent talks about confidence choosing to determine, sorry, choosing to
- 5:50Speaker 1: value determination over confidence. I agree with him. Confidence is
- 5:54Speaker 1: a static state. Determination is active. Determination allows for doubt
- 6:00Speaker 1: and for humility, both of which are critical in the
- 6:02Speaker 1: world today. There's so much we don't know and so
- 6:05Speaker 1: much we don't know we don't know. To be overly
- 6:08Speaker 1: confident or without doubt seems silly to me. Determination, on
- 6:12Speaker 1: the other hand, is the commitment to win, a commitment
- 6:15Speaker 1: to fight the good fight. The bull rider says confidence
- 6:21Speaker 1: is a big part of it, but I think I
- 6:23Speaker 1: ride more off of determination than confidence. Confidence is you've
- 6:27Speaker 1: been on the bull before and you know you're going
- 6:30Speaker 1: to ride him. Just turning the page, potties, hang on.
- 6:36Speaker 1: There we go. Confidence is kind of like maybe being
- 6:41Speaker 1: cocky about it, but in a good way. If you
- 6:43Speaker 1: ride with determination, forget the form, get the horn. Tuff
- 6:48Speaker 1: Hedeman said that. He's in the movie Eight Seconds. And
- 6:52Speaker 1: you know he was the world champion like three times,
- 6:53Speaker 1: because he didn't ride with style, he rode with determination.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Just hang on till the whistle blows. No matter if
- 6:59Speaker 1: you're riding upside down, determination. Like Pat, my wife's uncle.
- 7:04Speaker 1: He always said, man, you got the most try than
- 7:07Speaker 1: any kid I've ever seen. Try and determination is the
- 7:10Speaker 1: same thing. And you know, like there've been loads of times,
- 7:14Speaker 1: there's loads of bull riders, they safety up. And me,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I've never safetied up in my whole life. And a
- 7:19Speaker 1: lot of times, it may get me stepped on or something.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You're just going to ride till your head hits the
- 7:25Speaker 1: back of the dirt. And Anna Deavis Smith concludes, the
- 7:31Speaker 1: point is you may not need confidence which comes with
- 7:34Speaker 1: time as much as you need your personal determination to
- 7:37Speaker 1: hang in there no matter what. So there we go.
- 7:41Speaker 1: If you find yourself at a low level of confidence
- 7:44Speaker 1: with something right now, just remember it's not like there's
- 7:51Speaker 1: nothing you can do about it because you haven't gained
- 7:53Speaker 1: enough experience to have more confidence. It's more like Let's
- 7:56Speaker 1: just shift into the mindset that we're going to be
- 8:01Speaker 1: determined and we are determined to stay in the fight
- 8:06Speaker 1: no matter how difficult it is. And confidence will come later.
- 8:23Speaker 1: What can I see directly in front of me? It's
- 8:26Speaker 1: been a very stormy few days in the UK. Storm
- 8:29Speaker 1: Austin has been battering us. And the woods are damp,
- 8:35Speaker 1: full of multicoloured leaf litter, leaves that are yellow and
- 8:38Speaker 1: red and orange. And I was at a talk over
- 8:42Speaker 1: the weekend at the allotments by a tree surgeon who
- 8:46Speaker 1: was talking to us about what exactly is going on
- 8:49Speaker 1: with the trees right now. therefore when to prune your
- 8:52Speaker 1: fruit trees and he was saying right now as the
- 8:55Speaker 1: autumn is setting in the trees are sucking all of
- 8:57Speaker 1: the green to store energy in their branches and that
- 9:02Speaker 1: leaves the leaves their actual real colors which are red
- 9:06Speaker 1: and yellow and orange and then many of the leaves
- 9:11Speaker 1: also fall off but the point is the tree is
- 9:14Speaker 1: holding on to all the energy in the green chlorophyll
- 9:19Speaker 1: in the leaves and new leaves that grow in the
- 9:25Speaker 1: spring so the trees are in a period of kind
- 9:28Speaker 1: of inhaling all of the energy right now and so
- 9:32Speaker 1: we don't want to prune our trees when they need
- 9:34Speaker 1: it they need the energy we don't want to chop
- 9:37Speaker 1: branches off when they're trying to store energy in those
- 9:41Speaker 1: branches so we don't cut very much off our fruit
- 9:45Speaker 1: trees and we do it in the depths of winter
- 9:49Speaker 1: when they're definitely not actively trying to do anything with
- 9:51Speaker 1: their energy but in the spring. Really interesting. Not stuff
- 10:02Speaker 1: I can see directly in front of me but the
- 10:04Speaker 1: the leaf litter sort of reminded me of this this
- 10:07Speaker 1: talk I attended over the weekend which was really really
- 10:09Speaker 1: interesting and great to have an in-person opportunity to learn
- 10:13Speaker 1: something at the allotments. What else can I see? Well
- 10:18Speaker 1: it's just kind of damp but the air temperature is
- 10:21Speaker 1: not super low yet. We've got sort of 10 degrees
- 10:30Speaker 1: Celsius kind of feeling air at the moment, which is
- 10:34Speaker 1: absolutely manageable. A few extra layers and you're completely sorted.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And that's why October is a lovely month to go
- 10:41Speaker 1: for winter, sorry, autumn walks in the parks. Taking all
- 10:46Speaker 1: the autumn colour and not freeze one's extremities off. just
- 10:58Speaker 1: walking past a sculpture that's appeared in the woods. Somebody
- 11:01Speaker 1: has been working hard on turning a tree stump into
- 11:05Speaker 1: a sculpture. It's got two forks and a little squirrel
- 11:11Speaker 1: or something carved on top of it. And it's possible,
- 11:13Speaker 1: of course, that one person has created the main sculpture
- 11:17Speaker 1: and somebody else has created the squirrel.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Maybe multiple people are working on this sculpture at the
- 11:22Speaker 1: same time. I don't know. It's a beautiful day, actually.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I know I have a sort of classic beautiful day.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's the most beautiful day in the world when the
- 11:34Speaker 1: sun's shining and it's gorgeous, but actually this is a
- 11:37Speaker 1: beautiful day in a different, damp way. There's no sunshine
- 11:41Speaker 1: streaming through the leaves, but there is just a feeling
- 11:45Speaker 1: of coziness by being in a big coat and a
- 11:48Speaker 1: hat and a big cozy jumper in an autumn wood
- 11:54Speaker 1: which is not A beautiful day. And you know what
- 12:00Speaker 1: I mean. It's been lovely talking to you today, poddies.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your thoughts. Thank you so much, Nige,
- 12:06Speaker 1: for your voice note on confidence. If you want to
- 12:08Speaker 1: send me your thoughts on confidence, you can do that

- 12:15Speaker 1: The whole Walk the Pod cinematic universe is represented at walkthepod.com.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But the button you want to press is leave a
- 12:22Speaker 1: voice note for Walk the Pod. And then Speakpipe will

- 12:28Speaker 1: to me and I can send you a message straight
- 12:30Speaker 1: back and I can put it into the show tomorrow.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So we've got all of the rest of this week
- 12:38Speaker 1: to bring new angles on confidence, cover as much as
- 12:41Speaker 1: we can before we start wrapping up what we've learned.
- 12:45Speaker 1: The series go very quickly don't they? Nearly at the
- 12:48Speaker 1: end already. Or at least we've passed the halfway point.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I'm not sure how that's happened.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Take care of your beautiful mind, dear friends. Thank you
- 12:58Speaker 1: for walking with me. It's lovely to have you along
