Texas Tech has been maybe the offseason story of all of

college football, the financial resources that they're putting

into it and and they're the talk all over the country.

You've been covering Texas Tech for a long time.

Not to age you or anything like that, but you better out.

We've been talking together. I know you and Ken even longer

than than you and I, so you better out along.

What is it like for Texas Tech to be in this level and to be at

this kind of just conversation piece of all of college

football? Well, it, I mean, it's a bit

tricky if, if we're being honest, because it doesn't, you

know, it doesn't matter what you spent on this player or on this

team or whatever, because I mean, I've seen that Joey is

going to have a $55 million football team.

Well, that's, that's not true. What that number that gets

thrown around is like what Cody has stated to people, that's

what the whole department we've invested in, but that also

includes Roadshare. You know that that includes the

20 and a half million so that they've spent I guess $30

million into NIL for softball and basketball and football and,

and some of these sports. And it, it, it's created a lot

of buzz. And I think that the fans are

excited, but there's some cautious optimism too, because

it doesn't, it doesn't guarantee you anything, guys.

And you guys know this. I mean, the, the ball bounces

funny and you're not going to go undefeated.

And you, you know, I think Cody said it best in that, you know,

we, we tried to control what we could control.

We, we've dumped a bunch of money into facilities and they

just opened a $250 million football only facility.

And it's unbelievable. So that you can't say, hey, the

facilities aren't this. They tried to address their

roster by really adding as many quality big people as they

could. And that's why they didn't play.

I mean, they beat Iowa State in Arizona State last year, the 2

for it. But they couldn't, they needed

one more win elsewhere. And they they, they just weren't

quite good enough up front, if we'll be honest, they weren't

very good on the defensive line and offensive line.

So that's where a lot of the resources went just strictly for

football. And that's why, you know, a lot

of those schools in the SEC are so much better than everybody

because they have better and more big people on the up front

on both lines of scrimmage. But it's been something, I think

there's some conscious optimism and there's some excitement.

But I think Cody has basically said we try to control what we

could here, but we can't control what a referee is going to call.

We can't control that ball bounce and funny, can't control

if you're going to get upset and you just don't have it one day

or whatever. So I think that they try to just

put their best foot forward and hey, these were the rules.

We are allowed to play within these rules and now we're trying

to play within these new set of rules and we'll see what

happens. But I think they got a taste.

They were so close last year and that's what caused a lot of this

motivation. Had they won one more game last

year and they made it to Arlington, I'm not I'm not

exactly certain you would have seen this level of commitment or

but that's the one thing Texas Tech never made it to Arlington

This thing's trending up. I think they view him as being

brought it up again and talking about finding different

has done and kind of that forward look on what the Big 12,

the new Big 12 is going to be, how would you rate your market

and some take ways that you had from him down there in Texas?

I mean, I, I, you know, he's gotten to be really good friends

with, with our athletic director and I'm sure he's really good

friends with Jimmy Pollard too, but he's, you know, Brett is

very transparent. I think that he leans on people

like Cody Campbell and and some of the the the big time donors

or influencers or have you want to phrase that at each of these

campuses to try to get a feel for Hey, what what's best, you

know, and he'd be the first one to tell you big tool in Mexico,

for example, that whole deal, we're going to take some

football game. Well, it didn't get off the

ground. It was not a great idea.

I think the whole Gonzaga thing, the youth thing, I think he

brought that and was like, Hey, let's go in on basketball.

And I think there's a lot of the stakeholders were like, now this

isn't, this doesn't make all the sense, you know?

And so I've appreciated that he has been very outside the box.

I've appreciated that he's not necessarily stubborn in that he

brings a lot of ideas to table, but he's the first one to go,

based on that alone and put one of the power power leagues out

I think he's transparent and he's a he's a mover and I think

before and he's a disruptor. He's not worried about ruffling

a few feathers. He's not worried about shaking

the bushes a little bit. And you're, you know, you got an

arm tied behind your back a little bit in the Big 12

compared to maybe that's, you see in the Big 10.

But I think that he's continued to try to push and he'd be the

first one to tell you like, like example, the the expansion of

the NCAA tournament. Most of the general public is

like, what are we doing? We don't need this.

Mark is saying no for our league, and that's what I'm

because we would get more teams in and we would get compensated

A lot of folks think that last year was an anomaly that don't

sleep on the utes Oklahoma State, can they bounce back?

There's a couple other schools in Texas that have some

attention of some people. That'd be Baylor and TCU.

Where are you on the on the Big 12 as a whole?

Who do you think got better and who may be flying under the

Yeah, it's the margins in this league are so, so small.

Every game matters. That's the beauty of this

league. That's also why some people have

taken shots at it. You don't have the traditional,

but there there's there's six or seven teams that I think are

probably sitting in their offices right now going we got

to let's just shot the win this thing and they probably should

feel that way. You know, is it going to come

down to how you know your schedule versus somebody else's

kid to who who you had to play versus who they had to put me

Arizona State should be the favorite.

I think that's not right. They bring everybody back for

the most part, with the exception of their stud running

I think they're preaching continuity there and I think

what's Tech's toughest game? I mean it, you know, and Tech

has to go to Tempe, they've got to go to Salt Lake City, they've

got to go to Manhattan, KS. I mean, these are these are

three games that, you know, if you go 2 and one in that

stretch, why I gotta tell you, I think your chances are gonna be

pretty good that you could be one of the teams in Arlington.

But none of those three games are gonna be easy at all.

So, you know, in like a program you didn't even mention, I don't

even know what to think about Oklahoma State because for all

the same reasons about Utah, I mean, Mike Gundy, they won eight

or nine games. Like what was it like 17 years?

I mean, like, like just rolled out of bed and like they were

winning seven or eight, I mean. Yeah, they didn't beat.

Oklahoma enough and they didn't win enough conference

championships during that stretch, but they were the

epitome of consistency and everybody's nobody's talking

about them and he's probably got some serious pressure on him.

I love them. When they're taking money away

TCU's problem is their schedule is brutal, absolutely brutal.

it's likely four or five years down the line before we really
