- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up people?
- 0:01Speaker 1: What's up Earth?
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Steep Stuff Podcast.
- 0:04Speaker 1: I am your host, james Lariello, and today we have a brand new episode of the Sub Stuff Episode 8 coming for you.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I've been doing these like as like an other every other week kind of thing lately One I had pretty bad COVID a couple weeks ago so I couldn't talk, and two, just because I think we can get a lot more meat into these episodes If we do them bi-weekly.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I don't know what do you guys think?
- 0:27Speaker 1: You let me know, I don't really know.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We've got three big races I want to talk about that happened over the past two weeks that I'm super stoked to discuss.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We're going to get started.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the bar trail mountain race.
- 0:38Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the speed goat 50K and 28K.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And we're going to talk about what just dropped this past july 27th, on saturday the cirque series aliaska, which might be one of my favorite courses in trail running, even though I've not raced it yet.
- 0:52Speaker 1: What a bananas looking course, holy shit.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I am very excited to race that race.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Um, yeah, let's get started, guys.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So we're going to start with the bar trail mountain race.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Uh, this race took place, um, a couple weeks back, sunday, july 21st 2024.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Um, I don't know if you guys are familiar with the bar trail mountain race, but you should get yourself acquainted with it If you're interested in mountain races.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Um, it starts off on the iconic bar trail and Manitou Springs.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You run up bar trail, you make the turnaround at bar camp, so you're basically heading up the W's.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You pass Bob's Road, you go to bar camp, make that turnaround and then bomb your way back down.
- 1:31Speaker 1: The course itself is about 12.6 miles, so it's about half marathon with about 3630 feet of vertical, is an absolutely iconic race.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Your course record holder is none other than the goat himself, mr Joseph Gray.
- 1:43Speaker 1: The master's record holder is none other than one of the goats of the sport, mr Matt Carpenter, and the course record on the women's side is held by Brandi Elisa Erholz in running the Pikes Peak Marathon at Ascent.
- 2:05Speaker 1: This would be something I would definitely consider throwing onto your schedule because it's a great tune-up for that race.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You're going to get a deep elite field and just a lot of people are turned up for it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: It's very competitive, so definitely a personal favorite of mine.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I definitely plan to put it on my schedule for next year if I am in the state.
- 2:18Speaker 1: So definitely pretty dope.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Another thing if you guys are avid listeners or just kind of tuning in, if you jump on the podcast both on Spotify and Apple, if you head on over to the podcast header, you can kind of get a live breakdown on how the Bartram Mountain Race went.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I actually was invited to host an elite night panel for some of the elite athletes that turned up at the race.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So you're talking about, like Joseph gray, um you had Christina Mascherina, sarah ghoul, um John Aziz, um Tatum Russo, a bunch of the athletes that competed.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Um came on out and uh, we kind of had to do like a mini, like a mini format um interview.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So it's kind of a small panel interview.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It was pretty sweet, um, so definitely check that out now.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That's actually on the podcast and live right now.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It dropped on July 22nd.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It just says live from bar trail mountain race elite panel night.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So check that out.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Um.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Getting back to the bar trail mountain race, want to talk about the results?
- 3:17Speaker 1: Um, we're going to start with the female side, and miss Ashley Brasovan took the dub in one hour 54 minutes and 52 seconds, followed by Sarah Gould, second place, in one hour 56 minutes and 31 seconds.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I feel like Sarah, one of these days, is definitely going to break the curse of the second place.
- 3:35Speaker 1: She took second place to Christina Mascarenas in 2023 and second place to Christina Mascarenas in 2023 in the Pikes Peak Marathon.
- 3:42Speaker 1: So one of these years, sarah is definitely going to have that breakthrough and get it.
- 3:46Speaker 1: In third place was Amanda Kozlowski in two hours one minute 19 seconds.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Also want to give a big shout out to Ashley and Sarah for the only two females to run under two hours.
- 3:57Speaker 1: That's a pretty big deal.
- 3:58Speaker 1: This is a fast course, but it is absolutely no joke to run under two hours.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That's pretty serious.
- 4:05Speaker 1: In fourth place was Corey Barberi in two hours 12 minutes eight seconds and in fifth place was Anne Marie Cody in two hours and 15 minutes one second.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Over on the men, we had a photo finish between Mr Joseph Gray and John Aziz, with Joseph Gray taking the dub in one hour 33 minutes and 10 seconds, taking the dub in one hour 33 minutes and 10 seconds, and John Aziz literally on his heels.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I think Joe took a fall and John was right there to roll him up, so those two were neck and neck.
- 4:32Speaker 1: John took second place in one hour 33 minutes 11 seconds.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So right on Joe's heels.
- 4:37Speaker 1: In third place was Mr Cal O'Day, a young gun, college student in one hour 41 minutes 51 seconds.
- 4:46Speaker 1: In fourth place was Pat Casterline in one hour 46 minutes and 14 seconds.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And in fifth place was none other than podcast friend of the podcast and elite runner, mr Benjamin Townsend, in one hour 46 minutes 52 seconds.
- 4:59Speaker 1: So big shout out to the men and women top five of the bar trail mountain race.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Again, like I said, if you guys are interested in a really fun race to do in the greater Pikes Peak region in mid to late July, look no further than the Bartrell Mountain Race, personal favorite of mine.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Like I said, it's a fantastic tune up for someone that might be interested in the Pikes Peak Marathon or Pikes Peak Ascent, because you're running the same course.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Basically, all right.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Moving on, we're going to get into what happened in Utah a couple weekends ago, or last weekend we had the Speed Goat 50K, 28k, 11k and 21K.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Big shout out to the athletes that showed up to Snowbird to go race this race.
- 5:38Speaker 1: This is an absolutely iconic race.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Some of the greats have run this race.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You're talking about how this race was founded by none other than the Speed Goat himself.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Um, the 50 K itself.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Previous course record was held by Mr Adam Peterman and before that none other than Mr Jim Wamsley.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Um, yeah, there's some.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Some.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Some of the greats have absolutely run this race.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Sage Kennedy candidate came back this time around.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Um, you've seen quite a few people run this race, so this took.

- 6:12Speaker 1: Wow, just like an absolute beatdown of a course.

- 6:20Speaker 1: This year we saw a new course record go down for the likes of Davidson Clare, one of the few, if not one of the only, to ever go underneath five hours.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Mr Davidson Clare, the guy's an absolute freak.
- 6:30Speaker 1: The 28k as well boasts about 6,500 feet of vertical, and we're going to get into that.
- 6:36Speaker 1: We're going to start with the 50K.
- 6:39Speaker 1: We'll start with the ladies on the 50K side.
- 6:42Speaker 1: In first place was none other than Jasmine Lothar, north Face athlete, in six hours, 15 minutes, five seconds.
- 6:48Speaker 1: In second place was Molly Noise in six hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds.
- 6:54Speaker 1: In second place was Molly noise in six hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds, and third place was Cody Kelvin in six hours 24 minutes and 12 seconds.

- 7:09Speaker 1: Big shout out to Lindsay.
- 7:11Speaker 1: In fifth place, in six hours 41 minutes 39 seconds.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Um, also want to give a big shout out to um a couple of Colorado Springs athletes.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Uh, jenny Yeeman and Dan Metzger were out there um throwing down and I believe both were somewhere in the top 10.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Um, so big shout out to both of them.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Uh, hope to have them on the podcast soon.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Um, over on the men's side in first place was none other than the skiing legend slash freak athlete, mr David Sinclair.
- 7:39Speaker 1: This guy just for some reason has it figured out on the 50K side.
- 7:43Speaker 1: He has the course record at the rut and now owns the course record at Speed Goat in the four hours 57 minutes 35 seconds.
- 7:50Speaker 1: The guy is a fucking animal.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Oh my God, big shout out to David Sinclair.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I can't believe somebody went under five hours on fucking animal.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Oh my God, big shout out to David Sinclair.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I can't believe somebody went under five hours on this course.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Like, think about that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: 31, 32 miles with almost 12,000 feet of vert and the dude runs underneath five hours Like that's bananas and he beat second place by like almost 30 minutes.
- 8:09Speaker 1: The second place was Sam Hendry five hours 24 minutes 57 seconds.

- 8:38Speaker 1: It's really funny.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He does some really cool shit and, like I said, friend of the pod and yeah, he's got a good little montage of puking and then falling at the finish line, which is absolutely beautiful.

- 9:50Speaker 1: Took a dub in three hours 13 minutes and eight seconds.

- 11:36Speaker 1: Cirque Series, alyaska.

- 11:41Speaker 1: I love Mount Marathon and I do plan on trying to race that next year but, like Mount Marathon, is significantly harder to get into.
- 11:46Speaker 1: This is just a race you sign up for and it's got arguably a better course in my opinion.
- 11:51Speaker 1: You know people, a race you sign up for and it's got arguably a better course in my opinion.
- 11:53Speaker 1: People might be disappointed with that statement, but just saying, just saying yeah.

- 13:08Speaker 1: Can't write, can't wait to put this on my schedule for next year.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Yeah, guys, that's the rundown.
- 13:13Speaker 1: On the last two weeks.
- 13:14Speaker 1: We have not had a ton.
- 13:15Speaker 1: July is usually a little bit slower than June and August and September, so I know everybody's out there enjoying their summer.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So, yeah, I will report the news as it comes, as we get more action in our sport.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Keep a lookout.
- 13:30Speaker 1: On Friday, this upcoming Friday what is that date?
- 13:33Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Um, I think it's like august 3rd.
- 13:36Speaker 1: This friday, august 3rd, um, none other than miss tatum russo podcast is going to be dropping.

- 13:49Speaker 1: Like I said, hope you guys enjoy that one.
