- 0:28Speaker 1: the Saints' coaching search staff organization as a whole got
- 0:34Speaker 1: just like an avalanche of bad news. Joe Brady elected
- 0:38Speaker 1: to stay in Buffalo withdrawing from consideration. Candidly, I do
- 0:44Speaker 1: wonder sometimes when I see stories like that if the
- 0:47Speaker 1: coaches is really staying put, or if they were advised
- 0:50Speaker 1: they weren't going to get the job and so that
- 0:53Speaker 1: was an opportunity to save face or stay ahead of
- 0:56Speaker 1: the of the resume. Just withdrawing from consideration means you
- 0:59Speaker 1: weren't going to get the job. With Brady, I think
- 1:01Speaker 1: that there was a legitimate opportunity for him to get
- 1:04Speaker 1: that job. But anyway, the other thing we saw over
- 1:09Speaker 1: the weekend was a variety of hires of Saints' current
- 1:16Speaker 1: or former staff members to different places and in some
- 1:19Speaker 1: instance his lateral moves. We saw Dennis Allen, the former
- 1:24Speaker 1: Saints head coach, get the defensive coordinator job with the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Chicago Bears. That's really interesting because well, first of all,
- 1:34Speaker 1: the Saints played the Bears next year, so they'll face
- 1:36Speaker 1: off against Dennis Allen. And I think Dennis Allen has
- 1:40Speaker 1: proven to be a really good defensive coordinator. Was always
- 1:43Speaker 1: my contention with Dennis Allen. Lieutenant, not a general, and
- 1:48Speaker 1: during his time in New Orleans, Dennis Allen was a
- 1:52Speaker 1: very good defensive coordinator. There were a couple of years there,
- 1:57Speaker 1: his last couple as a DC, where they were top
- 1:59Speaker 1: five in both RUSS defense and pass defense. And he
- 2:02Speaker 1: took over one of the worst defenses in the NFL
- 2:06Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen when Rob Bryant was fired into twenty
- 2:08Speaker 1: sixteen and then turned the Saints into a consistent top
- 2:13Speaker 1: ten defense, great defensive coordinator. I think it's a fantastic
- 2:17Speaker 1: higher for Ben Johnson. They're in Chicago. But on top
- 2:24Speaker 1: of DA, we've seen other coaches leeve for what appears
- 2:29Speaker 1: to be lateral moves. Now Declan Doyle is also going
- 2:33Speaker 1: to Chicago as the offensive coordinator. Ben Johnson is the
- 2:36Speaker 1: head coach and he's likely going to call plays and
- 2:38Speaker 1: all that stuff. But Declan Doyle was a Saints offensive
- 2:41Speaker 1: assistant who was going with Dennis Allen now as the
- 2:44Speaker 1: offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bear So DA and Decklan
- 2:48Speaker 1: Doyle are both in Chicago. But the bigger news was
- 2:51Speaker 1: probably Clint Kubiak and then what the Cincinnati Bengals announced
- 2:56Speaker 1: on Monday, and that longtime Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodge
- 3:00Speaker 1: is making a lateral move to Cincinnati. So Kubiak, if
- 3:03Speaker 1: you missed it over the weekend, Clint Kubiak sat after
- 3:06Speaker 1: one season as the Saints offensive coordinator, has been hired
- 3:09Speaker 1: as the new offensive coordinator in Seattle. Now, Seattle had
- 3:14Speaker 1: hired grub who was the remember who was the offensive
- 3:20Speaker 1: coordinator for the Washington Huskies. Kalin Demore hired him at
- 3:25Speaker 1: Alabama and before he ever coached the day at Alabama,
- 3:28Speaker 1: he took the job as the OC with the Seattle
- 3:30Speaker 1: Seahawks and then got fired by McDonald after one season
- 3:33Speaker 1: there in Seattle. Despite the fact that the Seahawks were
- 3:36Speaker 1: ten and seven whatever, and part of the fan reaction
- 3:44Speaker 1: or part of the scuttle around the Saints where everybody's
- 3:48Speaker 1: leaving lateral moves, they can't wait to get out of town.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And then the same thing happened with Michael Hodges, who
- 3:53Speaker 1: on Monday was hired by the Bengals as their linebackers coach.
- 3:57Speaker 1: He's been the Saints linebackers coach since twenty seventeen. Now
- 4:00Speaker 1: he's going to Cincinnati's linebacker's coach. And so the fear
- 4:04Speaker 1: in the narrative is everybody's leaving. The reality is, I mean,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you're bringing in a new coach who's going to hire
- 4:14Speaker 1: his own staff anyway, right. I mean, the only real
- 4:20Speaker 1: exception would be if the Saints retain Darren Rizzy, and
- 4:26Speaker 1: I don't know that there's a great chance of that happening.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Like I'm pushing for that a little bit more here,
- 4:31Speaker 1: not because I think Darren Rizzy is the right guy
- 4:33Speaker 1: or the best guy for the job, but because I
- 4:36Speaker 1: think that's a good one year bridge as you tank
- 4:41Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five to have a more appealing job
- 4:45Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. Now, I don't know that the
- 4:46Speaker 1: Saints are going to approach it that way. But it's
- 4:48Speaker 1: what the Raiders just did. They retained Antonio Pierce for
- 4:51Speaker 1: a year and it was a bridge to their guy.
- 4:55Speaker 1: The Patriots just did it with Gerrod Mayo. I don't
- 4:58Speaker 1: think necessarily that was their intention initially, but they promoted
- 5:02Speaker 1: Gerrod Mayo. I think they were projected to win four games.
- 5:05Speaker 1: They won four games and at better option, and Mike
- 5:09Speaker 1: Rabel was available, and so they hired Rabel. It was
- 5:12Speaker 1: a more attractive situation now this year, So it's not
- 5:15Speaker 1: out of the realm of possibility you retain. We see
- 5:18Speaker 1: it in college. I mean, it happened with Zach Garnett
- 5:20Speaker 1: at Missippi State. After Mike Leech's passing, they promoted Arnett.
- 5:24Speaker 1: He was there for a year. It was a disaster,
- 5:26Speaker 1: they were able to settle everything, and then they went
- 5:28Speaker 1: and found their guy. Well, it remains to be seen
- 5:32Speaker 1: if it's the right guy, if that's the right way
- 5:33Speaker 1: to go out doing it. But I'm just saying it's
- 5:35Speaker 1: not altogether out of the ordinary for this to happen.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But if the Saints were to retain Darren Rizzy, then
- 5:45Speaker 1: Rizzy would probably retain a lot of the staff. That's
- 5:48Speaker 1: what Dennis Allen did. Remember Dennis Allen got the job
- 5:51Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one, I guess after the twenty one season,
- 5:54Speaker 1: are going into twenty two. And he retained Pete Carmichael
- 5:57Speaker 1: as his offensive coordinator, and he retained Ryan Nielsen, and
- 6:02Speaker 1: they brought and Chris Rechard and promoted them to co
- 6:04Speaker 1: DC's and he retained Darren Rizzy as a special teams coordinator,
- 6:08Speaker 1: retained Michael Hodges as his linebackers coach. So like there
- 6:11Speaker 1: was a lot of staff retention, and that was kind
- 6:14Speaker 1: of intentional. It was that it was part of why
- 6:17Speaker 1: you kept Dennis Allen. It was to say, look, we've
- 6:20Speaker 1: had this great run of success. Let's not upset the
- 6:24Speaker 1: apple card here. Let's see if we can kind of
- 6:25Speaker 1: continue this run of success. And it didn't work. Objectively,
- 6:29Speaker 1: didn't work. But if you retained Darren Rizzy, you might
- 6:32Speaker 1: have returned retained Clint Kubiak, you might have retained Michael Hodges.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Like those opportunities to be there if you retain Darren Rizzy.
- 6:39Speaker 1: But that's kind of the only way. And if you
- 6:41Speaker 1: don't retain Darren Rizzy, which I mean you look at
- 6:43Speaker 1: the odds and everything, it seems it seems like Mike
- 6:46Speaker 1: McCarthy or now Kellen Moore are the guys that have
- 6:49Speaker 1: shot up the odds list to be the next Saints coach.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Who knows what they're gonna do. I mean, Mickey feels
- 6:54Speaker 1: a little unpredictable at this moment. But if in fact,
- 6:58Speaker 1: you hire anyone other than Darren Rizzy, all those coaches
- 7:02Speaker 1: are going to be out of a job. So if
- 7:05Speaker 1: you're Clint Kubiak, you're sitting there looking going all right, well,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I mean, yes, I'm under contract with the New Orleans Saints,
- 7:12Speaker 1: but look at all the people they're looking to hire.
- 7:15Speaker 1: There's one guy that's a defensive coach, Anthony Weaver. That's it,
- 7:19Speaker 1: the DC for the Dolphins. That's the only defensive minded
- 7:23Speaker 1: coach who might retain Kubiak. Everyone else Mike McCarthy offensive coach,
- 7:30Speaker 1: probably bringing his own guy, Mike Kafka from the Giants
- 7:34Speaker 1: offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore offensive coordinator, Cliff Kingsbury offensive coordinator.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I mean, you were pursuing Joe Brady, who elected to stay.
- 7:42Speaker 1: But another offensive guy. I mean, everybody's been an offensive
- 7:44Speaker 1: guy except except Anthony Weaver. So I mean Aaron Glenn
- 7:51Speaker 1: was a defensive guy, but obviously he picked the Jets.
- 7:54Speaker 1: But by and large goes to show you they're trying.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They're looking to hire an offensive coach, and if you
- 7:59Speaker 1: hire an offense as a coach, that guy's gonna call
- 8:01Speaker 1: players of bringing his own coordinator. So Kubiak probably out
- 8:03Speaker 1: of a job anyway, So he's just staying ahead of
- 8:05Speaker 1: his resume. Seattle needed an offensive coordinator, it was burn Hand,
- 8:08Speaker 1: he took it. I don't blame him at all for
- 8:09Speaker 1: doing that. I think it's the smart thing for Kubiak
- 8:12Speaker 1: to do. I'd say the same thing for Michael Hodges.
- 8:14Speaker 1: He's been in New Orleans since twenty seventeen. He's actually
- 8:17Speaker 1: tutored some really good linebackers when you think about it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: To Mario Davis has been awesome. I mean, you had
- 8:22Speaker 1: Alex Anzeloni, you had Caden Ellis, you had Zach Bond.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Although he didn't really develop Zac Bond here, he went
- 8:27Speaker 1: to Philly and became defensive player that your candidate. Pete
- 8:31Speaker 1: Werner has been a good player for you since drafting
- 8:34Speaker 1: him when he's been healthy. So he's a good coach.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But what's to say that he'd be retained by a
- 8:40Speaker 1: new coach, had an opportunity to go to the Bengals,
- 8:44Speaker 1: who with one of the best quarterbacks in the league
- 8:46Speaker 1: and potentially be a playoff team, and go to that
- 8:49Speaker 1: defense with their new defensive coordinator. Yeah. I mean there's
- 8:53Speaker 1: a lot of it that makes sense. So in an
- 8:56Speaker 1: event I listen, My contention is with New Orleans, the
- 9:02Speaker 1: situation is very bad, Like this isn't you know when
- 9:05Speaker 1: we talked about Joe Brady, people said all the optics
- 9:08Speaker 1: of the same job. That's not optics, it's it's reality.
- 9:11Speaker 1: This isn't just the perception, Like this is your actual reality.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You are a bad job, your cap situation is bad,
- 9:15Speaker 1: your roster's bad, you're old. It's just it's not a
- 9:19Speaker 1: good situation, which is why you're having a hard time
- 9:22Speaker 1: being attractive to the top candidates. But in this instance,
- 9:27Speaker 1: of these guys who are currently on staff taking other jobs,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I think that's less they're trying to get out of
- 9:34Speaker 1: New Orleans and more they know when a new coach
- 9:38Speaker 1: comes in, they're probably going to be out of a
- 9:39Speaker 1: job anyway. So if you have a chance to take
- 9:40Speaker 1: a job now, you take the job now. So I
- 9:44Speaker 1: don't read too much into into Clint Kubiak or Michael
- 9:47Speaker 1: Hodges or or Declan Doyle taking other jobs. It's probably
- 9:54Speaker 1: a smart thing to do because they were probably going
- 9:56Speaker 1: to be out of a job in New Orleans anyway
