Latest / The IBS Solution with Brooke Kane / IBS? Don’t Do Another Detox Until You Do This First
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you have IBS and you're about to do another detox, stop.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Because I see women spend thousands of dollars chasing mold, heavy metals, hormones, toxins while missing the one thing that actually needs attention first.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And even though a detox sounds like a good idea, it can actually make you feel worse than you already do if this one thing is still a mess.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: I'm Brooke Kane.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: I'm a registered nurse and functional medicine practitioner specializing in IBS relief.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to show you what I want to fix before I start chasing any of that.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: The word detox has gotten completely ridiculous.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You don't need a seven-day juice cleanse to turn your liver on, and you do not need some expensive powder with detox printed across the front of it.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Your liver is already working every second of every day, processing medications, hormones, nutrients, alcohol, chemicals, all kinds of things that your body encounters.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But here's the part that most people miss.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Your liver is only one part of the cleanup system.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: A huge amount of what gets absorbed through your digestive tract gets sent straight to your liver, where it gets processed, transformed, stored, prepared to leave the body.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Then your liver sends something incredibly important right back into your gut, bile.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Most people think bile is just there to help digest fat, but it also interacts with your microbiome and plays a role in how certain compounds eventually get eliminated.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So your gut sends things to your liver, your liver processes them, and then part of that process comes right back through the gut, which means if your gut is a mess, the detox won't be detoxing.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Let's say your liver does exactly what it's supposed to do.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: It processes something your body does not need, packages it up, sends it into bile, and moves that bile back into your intestinal tract.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Now your gut has to move it out.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: That is one of the reasons bowel movements matter so much.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Stool is literally one of the ways that waste leaves the body.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So healthy motility and healthy bowel movements are part of the system.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Now think about somebody with IBS, already bloated, cramping, having diarrhea six times a day, or going days without a bowel movement at all.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Now the microbiome's a mess, digestion is poor, and the gut lining's irritated.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Then somebody tells you you need a detox.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: That's like packing up an entire house and expecting a moving truck to show up, but all you get is a scooter.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You've got all this stuff you're trying to move out, but the system you're relying on to get it there can't handle the load.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And if that sounds familiar, if you've done the GI doctors, the supplements, detoxes, functional medicine, and your gut is still a mess, there's a link below to reach out to learn more about what I do.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Most of the people I work with have already tried a lot.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: What they need is not another random protocol.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: We look at what is actually happening inside the gut, figure out what needs attention, and build from there.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Because once you understand what the gut is doing, the rest of this starts to make a lot more sense.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: There is one marker that I look at on stool testing that shows you just how important this whole gut-liver connection can be.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And it's called beta-glucaronidase.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: You don't need to remember the name, but you need to understand what it can tell us.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Your liver can process certain compounds and package them up so that they can be moved toward elimination.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: They get sent into the intestinal tract where ideally they keep moving and eventually leave in your stool.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So imagine you got the whole house packed up and you're ready to move, then somebody comes through, rips open the boxes, and starts throwing everything back around the house again.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: That's basically what can happen when beta-glucuronidase activity is too high.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Certain bacteria in the gut can produce enzymes that unpack some of those compounds, which means things your body was trying to get rid of can become available to be reabsorbed and recirculated again.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: So your liver did the work, it packed everything up, it sent it towards the exit, but instead of leaving, some of that stuff gets dumped right back into the system.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: If your gut is doing that, piling on another detox doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: This is where functional medicine can get just as messy as conventional medicine.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Someone has IBS, they're still sick, and suddenly everybody wants to test everything: hormones, mold, heavy metals, environmental toxins, nutrients, and another giant stack of supplements.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: There can absolutely be a time to look at those things.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I look at those things, but if your digestion is poor, your gut lining is inflamed, your beneficial bacteria are depleted, the wrong organisms are taking over, and your bowel movements are still all over the place.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: That's where I start.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: I'm not building the second story of the house while the foundation is falling apart.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Because if the gut is not functioning well, you're not absorbing properly, you're not eliminating properly, and you're not giving the rest of the body a very good foundation to work from.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: That's why I spend so much time on the gut first.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Another mistake people make is trying to attack everything at the same time.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: They get a few abnormal results, they panic, and suddenly they're taking 15 supplements and doing three protocols all at once.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: That's not smart treatment.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I get a stool test back and the gut is so inflamed and angry that I need to calm things down before I can even go after anything aggressively.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Another person may be the complete opposite.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: There's something sitting there driving the inflammation, and until we deal with that, all the soothing supplements in the world are not going to get us very far.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Someone else may have severely depleted beneficial bacteria that need to be rebuilt, while another person may have terrible digestive function that has to be addressed first.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: This is why I work in layers.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I stabilize what needs stabilizing, repair what needs repairing, rebuild what's missing, and then I start thinking about optimization because if you throw five things at the body at once and somebody gets worse, you have no idea what caused it.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: And if they start to feel better, you still don't know what helped.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: That is just guessing with more expensive supplements.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: So before I start chasing mold, toxins, hormones, heavy metals, I want to understand the system we already know is struggling.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I want to know whether harmful bacteria are taking over and whether the protective bacteria that should keep them under control are missing.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: I want to know what your short chain fatty acids look like, whether digestion is working properly, what the gut pH looks like, what's happening with inflammation and the gut lining, whether beta-glucaronidase suggests that compounds may be getting recirculated instead of moving out the way that they should.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And I want to know what your bowel movements are actually doing.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: That tells me a lot more than somebody saying you need to detox because detox is not one supplement, it's an entire process and your gut is part of it.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: This is the part I really want people to understand.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: When you have been sick for years, it's easy to start thinking that your body's broken.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: But look at what it's already doing every second without you consciously controlling any of it.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Your liver is processing compounds, your kidneys are filtering blood, your intestinal cells are renewing, your immune system is monitoring what's happening, your digestive system is breaking down food, your microbiome produces compounds, your liver is making bile, your body's doing an unbelievable amount of work for you all day long.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So I'm not interested in forcing your body through one detox after another.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I want to know what's interfering with what it already knows how to do.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Is your gut inflamed?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Are you feeding organisms that shouldn't be there?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Are you missing bacteria that should be there?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Are you absorbing what you need?
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Are you eliminating what you do not need?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: That is the work.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And once you start removing those obstacles, the body can do an incredible amount for you.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Once somebody's gut is dramatically better, that is when I get much more interested in zooming the camera out.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Now we can look at nutrients, hormones, environmental exposures, mold, heavy metals, whatever else deserves attention.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: But now we're doing that from a much stronger foundation.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: You're digesting better, you're absorbing better, your bowel movements are more normal, the intestinal environment is healthier.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Now we can ask a much better question.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: What does this body need next?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: That is a completely different place to work from than throwing another detox at somebody whose gut is still in total chaos.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So if you have IBS and you're thinking about doing another detox, do not start by asking which detox is best.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Ask whether your gut is actually functioning well enough to support everything you're trying to do.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: If your digestion is still terrible, your microbiome is out of balance, your gut's inflamed, and your bowel movements are still controlling your life, fix that first.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Your liver is already doing its job.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Your body is already trying to process and eliminate what it doesn't need.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Your gut has to be able to do its part too.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: And if you have already done stool testing and someone told you everything looked normal, watch this video next.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: I'll show you the seven things even advanced stool tests can miss and why a normal result may not tell you nearly as much as you think.
