- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37There is this truth in the Bible called election.
- 0:40And so God has already ordained people that are going to get
- 0:43saved based upon hearing the gospel.
- 0:45So the the cool thing is when you and I go out, people are
- 0:49already planned, planned by God to believe, right?
- 0:52And you and I just have the easy responsibility to tell people
- 0:56the truth. And people believe.
- 0:57It's not anything we did other than just giving them the
- 1:00gospel, because that's how people believe when they hear
- 1:02the truth. But God's already chosen them to
- 1:06become believers. It's scary to witness to people
- 1:09about the gospel. After all, we know that not
- 1:11everyone is going to be receptive to our message.
- 1:14Some may be apathetic, but there's always a chance that
- 1:17someone could respond with anger or hostility to the good news.
- 1:22But Pastor Clark reminds us today that when we witness to
- 1:24people, we're not just planting seeds.
- 1:27In some cases, we're watering the ground so that the seeds
- 1:30that God has already planted can flourish and his presence can
- 1:34bloom in their hearts. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:38book of Acts Chapter 18 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:42of Grace. We are in the book of Acts, Acts
- 1:45chapter 18, and as we study this book, I don't know about you,
- 1:50but I find that I experienced sort of a, a deeper relationship
- 1:56and friendship with the people that I'm studying about or
- 1:59reading about. I've known the Apostle Paul ever
- 2:02since I first got saved back when I was 20 years old.
- 2:07And I, I know so much about his life and his ways and his
- 2:10passion, his ministry, his, his perseverance that I, I, I sense,
- 2:14and I'm sure you do that. I actually, I'm a Co laborer
- 2:17with him in this day that we live as you are too.
- 2:22We're all missionaries. We're all in the ministry
- 2:24together. And so as we study these
- 2:27teachings in the book of the Acts, it's the history of the
- 2:30church and how it started and how the Lord used certain people
- 2:34to spread the gospel and how people became believers as a
- 2:38result of these men and women who gave of themselves for the
- 2:42sake of others. And when we study this, I, I'm
- 2:46challenged myself to think about the depths of love and humility
- 2:53and yieldedness that Paul and and the others that we read
- 2:56about had. And as I am being worked on by
- 3:01the Lord, as you are too, I find that my will is becoming more
- 3:05his will and less my will. When I was younger as a
- 3:08Christian, I always blew through the red lights and I always
- 3:11wanted my will first. I'm sure you did too.
- 3:14And I've learned through life that that doesn't work.
- 3:17God's will is the perfect will and it's the best will to
- 3:20follow. And whenever God begins you to
- 3:23give you a check in your spirit where you are yielding to
- 3:26wanting his will and not your will be done.
- 3:29Boy, that's that's amazing work of God's Spirit, isn't it, to
- 3:32give us that sense. Oh Lord, what do you think about
- 3:35this? What do you want?
- 3:36What do you want me to do? What do you want me to use my
- 3:40resources for my gifts and my talents, my abilities.
- 3:44And it's more blessed to give than receive.
- 3:47And I think of my own life. Well, what can I give to the
- 3:50Lord? He's given me and you so much
- 3:53more than what we could ever ask or think right or deserve.
- 3:57And what could we give him? Will we give him our lives?
- 4:00We give him maybe a deeper consecration, a more willing
- 4:05heart to surrender and and want his will above our own will.
- 4:10And that would really honor him. So as we study this this
- 4:13chapter, we'll see a man and others are mentioned in here
- 4:16that live their lives for the sake of God's will.
- 4:19And may we all be blessed by what we here today and learn.
- 4:23Father God, we commit ourselves to you today and we're just so
- 4:26grateful that we can come together as a community of
- 4:28believers that love you and love one another.
- 4:32And Lord, we truly are here today that we might learn how to
- 4:36follow you in a deeper way. Thank you for the example of the
- 4:39apostles and, and those who served both the men and godly
- 4:43women that we read about today. And it's just amazing, God, how
- 4:47you established your church, how you went before everyone, before
- 4:52they even began to do these things.
- 4:54And you had a plan before the foundation of the earth to save
- 4:58Lord, to deliver, to set free, to transform.
- 5:02And we're still doing that today and the days that we live.
- 5:05And so, Lord, we just thank you and we praise you for who you
- 5:07are. Ask Lord your blessing and favor
- 5:10upon your word, and may it touch every heart that you brought
- 5:13here today. And those who are listening
- 5:15online or on the radio, however they connect with this church,
- 5:19Father bless them. We pray in Jesus name, Amen.
- 5:23So we'll look here at verses one through 3 as we begin this
- 5:27chapter. After these things, Paul
- 5:29departed from Athens and went to Corinth.
- 5:32So after these things, we talked about the ministry of Paul on
- 5:37Mars Hill when he was proclaiming the gospel to a
- 5:41Pagan people that knew nothing about the truth of the living
- 5:44God. They had a statue that was there
- 5:47in honor of the unknown God. And Paul was making it clear to
- 5:52the people in Greece that there is a God that you can know and
- 5:56that he's real and he's living. He's not a statue and he's the
- 6:00Lord Jesus Christ. So he continues on this vein of
- 6:04preaching and he's left Athens and he's now in Corinth.
- 6:08And Corinth is a isthmus South of Athens.
- 6:12And it's a little peninsula. Basically it comes off the, the
- 6:16nation and it's only about two to five miles wide.
- 6:20So what would happen is that travellers on the two sides of
- 6:23the seaports and boats and ships would come to Corinth to, you
- 6:28know, transport their, their goods.
- 6:30And it was a big, big city in regard to commerce.
- 6:33Unfortunately, what Corinth is known for is its blatant
- 6:37immorality and ungodliness. They had a temple there called
- 6:41the Temple of Aphrodite, who was the fertility goddess building
- 6:46on the top of the hill there that thousand prostitutes would
- 6:49come down every night to engage in their occupation, to be
- 6:57tempting the men in the seaport at the time.
- 7:00And the money that would come in through the prostitution would
- 7:03support the prostitutes as well as continually fuel the power
- 7:07and the energy of that godless temple that people were
- 7:10worshipping at. And because of this issue of of
- 7:14Corinth in the the immorality and godliness, it's interesting
- 7:18that Paul wrote the book of Romans from the city of Corinth
- 7:23in the 1st chapter. Chapter 1 talks about all the
- 7:26ungodliness of sexual morality and perversion and homosexuality
- 7:31and lesbianism and on and on and on.
- 7:33The filth and the godless heart and mind of the people that
- 7:39lived in the city. And so this is where Paul is
- 7:42right now. Initially he's here by himself.
- 7:46And it says, and he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born
- 7:49in Taunt Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with
- 7:53his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the
- 7:56Jews to depart from Rome. And he came to them, this
- 8:00couple, interesting Priscilla and Aquila, husband and wife
- 8:05team that loved the Lord, knew the Lord and were very
- 8:09influential in ministering with Paul.
- 8:12They're mentioned in numerous times and in the New Testament
- 8:15in the book of Corinthians and their ministry with Paul.
- 8:19It is evident here as we study that they were believers and
- 8:24they were in that city providentially to we'll see in a
- 8:27minute here, to work with Paul in the ministry there.
- 8:31They had to leave Rome because Rome had a hatred for Jews.
- 8:35And so the edict was by the leader at the time that all
- 8:38Jewish people had to to get out of Rome.
- 8:41And so they ended up in Corinth providentially and it says and
- 8:46he came to them. So Paul finds out where they
- 8:48are. Doesn't give a lot of details on
- 8:50how he knew them, but one thing they had in common for sure
- 8:52beside their faith was that they because he was of the same trade
- 8:57he stayed with them and worked for by occupation.
- 9:00They were tent makers and tent makers, they were primarily
- 9:04involved with working with leather goods, and that's how
- 9:07they made their livelihood. Paul at times was supported by
- 9:11the churches when he was on his missionary journeys.
- 9:13And at times he would work with his hands and earn extra income
- 9:17so that he would not be a burden to anybody.
- 9:19And so this is where he's at right now.
- 9:22And it says in verse 4. And he reasoned in the synagogue
- 9:25every Sabbath and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.
- 9:28What's remarkable about the calling of God on Paul's life,
- 9:34being a Jew versus being a Gentile, was that he had access
- 9:38to the most influential places of spirituality, places where
- 9:44they would want to talk about God, they would want to worship
- 9:47him, they would want to know him.
- 9:48It wasn't like he went into a city and civil war.
- 9:50How do I get started here with telling people about who Jesus
- 9:53is? He had the privilege, because he
- 9:56was Jewish, to go into the synagogue.
- 9:58And so he would have respect and honor, and he would be able to
- 10:01go in and begin to discuss the gospel and Jesus being the true
- 10:05Messiah. And he did this in every
- 10:07synagogue and every city that he had visited.
- 10:10That's where he always started. And his goal was to persuade
- 10:13people by the power of the Holy Spirit to believe that Jesus is
- 10:19truly the Messiah. And so it says in verse 5 when
- 10:23Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia.
- 10:25Now, if you remember, he told them in chapter 17, hey, when
- 10:29you get done, quickly come and catch up with me.
- 10:32They had eventually come from where they were.
- 10:35Timothy was working in one of the church plants, as was Silas.
- 10:39And Paul is, I'm sure, really grateful that they're there now.
- 10:43And Paul is now compelled by the Spirit because he's encouraged
- 10:48by these two guys. They're giving him a report of
- 10:51how the church is doing where they were serving.
- 10:54And it's like when missionaries come here and they come here
- 10:57whenever they're on furlough to give us updates as to what's
- 11:01happening in the field and what's what's going on with the
- 11:03church and people coming to faith in Christ.
- 11:06And we support these missionaries.
- 11:08And it's exciting for us to be a part of that because the the
- 11:12fruit of their laborers is accounted to your account in
- 11:16heaven because we're part of what God's doing in these other
- 11:20foreign countries through our prayers and through our
- 11:22offerings that we use to help support them.
- 11:25So when they come and give a report, it really edifies us.
- 11:28It builds us up, it excites us, us to know that God is working
- 11:33not only here, but he's working all around the world.
- 11:36And so they're a blessing to Paul giving these updates.
- 11:40So he's now filled with God's Spirit, excited about what it is
- 11:45he has an opportunity to do. And he testifies to the Jews
- 11:48here that Jesus is the Christ. But when they opposed him and
- 11:53blasphemed, he shook his garments and said to them, Your
- 11:57blood be upon your own heads. I am clean.
- 11:59From now on I will go to the Gentiles.
- 12:03So not every time in every place that Paul went any more than you
- 12:09or I. When we share our faith with
- 12:10family, loved ones, Co workers, neighbors, whatever are we
- 12:14receive well, many times we're rejected.
- 12:16Many times people don't want to hear what it is we have to say.
- 12:20And obviously we're not alone. The apostle himself encountered
- 12:24these kind of experiences of opposition and rejection lots of
- 12:29times whenever these things happen, it really didn't seem to
- 12:32disturb him. He didn't say a whole lot.
- 12:34But in this particular instance, it seemed to get him really
- 12:38upset. So he he rebuked them when they
- 12:41opposed him and said you blasphemy.
- 12:44Blasphemy is a lot of people say, well, what's blasphemy?
- 12:48It's abandoning God. It's speaking evil of God.
- 12:51It's not believing in God, it's rejecting the gospel of Jesus
- 12:55Christ. There's only one sin that people
- 12:58can't be forgiven of, and that's blaspheme of the Holy Spirit.
- 13:02And sometimes Christians will say, I don't know.
- 13:04I think one time I blasphemed the Holy Spirit.
- 13:06Well, we all did it one time before we came to faith in
- 13:08Christ. We rejected him, we denied him.
- 13:11We may be cursed about him or didn't believe, but then when we
- 13:14became believers, it's impossible to blasphemy the Holy
- 13:18Spirit. Blaspheme of the Holy Spirit is
- 13:20rejection of the Gospel. And so Paul is exhorting them
- 13:24and warning them and telling them that they're blaspheming
- 13:27this truth of Christ being Messiah.
- 13:29So he's physically showing this attitude of disappointment and
- 13:34he shakes his garment, saying them, your blood be on your own
- 13:37heads. I'm clean.
- 13:38In other words, I gave you the truth.
- 13:41I'm not going to be held responsible or accountable for
- 13:44not speaking the truth. And that's sort of an
- 13:47interesting verse because I think it's a challenge for all
- 13:51of us that we are not going to be held responsible for not
- 13:58telling someone about Jesus that the Lord spoke to you and me
- 14:01about witnessing to Sometimes we get afraid of witnessing or
- 14:05we're getting embarrassed. We don't want to share our
- 14:07faith. It's just our pride or whatever
- 14:09should never be embarrassed about sharing the gospel.
- 14:12But sometimes that happens to us.
- 14:14You know, sometimes God, you know when I sometimes all the
- 14:17time, God sets up opportunities for us to be able to witness.
- 14:22Not everybody you meet, you're going to have an opportunity to
- 14:26maybe talk about the Lord, but sometimes, you know, real clear
- 14:29that you got a connection with someone that God wants you to
- 14:33tell them about what Jesus did for you.
- 14:36And you want to be free from the responsibility of being judged
- 14:42for not being faithful to share the gospel.
- 14:46And that really was a heavy burden on Paul.
- 14:48He never, ever wanted to be in a place or situation where he
- 14:53would be judged for not doing what it was that he was called
- 14:56to do. And I think that's a good
- 14:58challenge for all of us that we would not be responsible for not
- 15:03telling someone what they need to know to at least have a
- 15:06chance to to believe. And then he says, from now on,
- 15:09I'll go to the Gentiles. So Paul was the apostle to the
- 15:12Gentiles. That was his call in ordination
- 15:16from God's plan before he was even saved.
- 15:20He was chosen to be an apostle in his mother's womb.
- 15:22The Bible tells us for now on, he's going to focus on the
- 15:26Gentiles. But he still has a heart for the
- 15:28Jewish people. He's Jewish.
- 15:30And so he departs from there, and he enters into the House of
- 15:33a certain man named Justice. His name also is believed to be
- 15:37Gaius, one who worshipped God, whose house was next door to the
- 15:42synagogue. So Paul's able to hang out now
- 15:45right next door to where he was just preaching with this
- 15:49believer, this man named Justice.
- 15:52Then Crispus, this is fascinating.
- 15:54Verse 8, the ruler of the synagogue believed on the Lord
- 15:58with all his household and many of the Corinthians hearing
- 16:01believed and were baptized. So in spite of the rejection and
- 16:05a lot of people not believing, the good news is someone will
- 16:08always end up believing. It's like a numbers deal.
- 16:11The more you tell, the more opportunity you have to see God
- 16:15harvest people and bring them into the Kingdom.
- 16:17And what's really powerful should give you and I confidence
- 16:21there is this truth in the Bible called election.
- 16:24And so God has already ordained people that are going to get
- 16:27saved based upon hearing the gospel.
- 16:30So the, the cool thing is when you and I go out, people are
- 16:33already planned by planned by God to believe, right?
- 16:36And you and I just have the easy responsibility to tell people
- 16:40the truth. And people believe.
- 16:41It's not anything we did other than just giving them the gospel
- 16:44because that's how people believe when they hear the
- 16:46truth. But God's already chosen them to
- 16:49become believers. And so that's why you want to
- 16:52spread the gospel, as Jesus said to every living creature, only
- 16:56God knows who's going to come to him.
- 16:58And it's not our job to decide who's going to come and who
- 17:00isn't. Our job is just to share the
- 17:03truth of the gospel. So here the probably the most
- 17:06unlikely person at the time that you would think would believe is
- 17:10the ruler of the synagogue. He's the big guy, he's the
- 17:13leader, he's the one that's responsible for the services and
- 17:18and this guy becomes a believer. It tells us later in the book of
- 17:23Corinthians that this guy was baptized by Paul along with
- 17:26justice. So this move of God, this
- 17:29wonderful and he believed on the Lord.
- 17:32And not only did he believe, but his whole family ended up
- 17:35believing. And as a result of that, many of
- 17:38the Corinthians hearing believed and were baptized.
- 17:41So in spite of the rejection, in spite of Paul may be getting a
- 17:43little frustrated, God still did what he promised he would do.
- 17:47He would save people from the preaching the gospel.
- 17:51Now in verse 9, now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a
- 17:54vision. Do not be afraid, but speak.
- 17:59Paul had six visions. I've never had a vision.
- 18:02I don't. I've never met anybody that's
- 18:04had a vision. I think it'd be sort of cool to
- 18:06have a vision if it was from God.
- 18:08I don't want a deceptive vision from the Evil 1 or some lying
- 18:12vision, but I'm up for any visions that God wants to give.
- 18:16But it had to be so encouraging to Paul to have the supernatural
- 18:20connection with the Lord that he was chosen to have revelation
- 18:25given to him. That was uncommon pretty much
- 18:29for most people, because he's an apostle, I'm sure, and because
- 18:32he had the weight of the building of the New Testament
- 18:36church in the beginning stages. He needed all the help he could
- 18:39get. And Jesus is telling him here,
- 18:41do not be afraid, but speak Now. Paul's obviously afraid he
- 18:46wouldn't have this vision. He's maybe nervous about
- 18:49something, apprehensive about something.
- 18:51He sees the conflict, he sees the hatred, he's aware of the
- 18:56martyrdom, he's aware of the danger, the stoning, the
- 18:58imprisonment, all the things that can happen if you represent
- 19:02the Lord in a country like this, at a time like this.
- 19:05And the Lord is comforting him. He's saying don't be afraid and
- 19:10do not keep silent. In other words, just keep
- 19:13preaching for I am with you and no one will attack you to hurt
- 19:17you for I have many people in this city.
- 19:21How comforting they had to be. To Paul, it was an assurance
- 19:25that keep doing what you're doing this maybe down the road
- 19:28you're going to have some issues and he did.
- 19:30But this wasn't the time that his life is going to be taken.
- 19:34He had opportunity now to be bold and to proclaim Christ in
- 19:39the midst of the culture that wasn't really open to what he
- 19:43had to say. No one's going to hurt him.
- 19:46And so he needed to hear that, I'm sure, in Corinth, because it
- 19:49was a barbaric, godless city. And he was pretty much by
- 19:53himself outside of Priscilla and Aquila at the time in regard to
- 19:57doing this ministry. And I love what it says here.
- 20:01He's encouraging Paul. For I have many people in the
- 20:05city. In other words, Paul, there's a
- 20:06lot of people that live here in Corinth that need me, that will
- 20:10come to know who I am because of what it is you're going to tell
- 20:13them. I remember years ago, my brother
- 20:16was a church planner and he had an opportunity to take over a
- 20:20fledgling Baptist Church in Ambridge.
- 20:23It was previously pastored by a transgender, believe it or not,
- 20:28person dressed up in dresses privately.
- 20:31He was a preacher. I have no idea how that
- 20:33happened. So my brother had to go in and
- 20:35try to get this church back on its feet again.
- 20:38And so we were at a pastors conference and we had an
- 20:40opportunity to talk to Chuck. He had finished one of his
- 20:44messages and we went up and I went in to introduce Pastor
- 20:47Chuck and my brother Doug. And Chuck says where where are
- 20:50you serving? And Doug says Ambridge,
- 20:52Pennsylvania. And and then Doug began to tell
- 20:55him what a terrible city it was. It was, you know, really rundown
- 20:59because of steel mills had closed down a lot of drug
- 21:02addiction, alcoholism and poverty.
- 21:05And and I'll never forget what Chuck says.
- 21:07He looked at me. He says couldn't be any worse
- 21:10than corns. And he said the dog, he says,
- 21:14you know why you're there. And Doug just looked at him
- 21:17shell shocked. And Chuck said because many
- 21:20people need me there. So wherever there's a church, no
- 21:25matter how big or how small, it's there.
- 21:28And those cities, because people need Jesus, God placed us here
- 21:34in this city because people need the Lord, they need the word,
- 21:38they need to be taught, they need to be fed.
- 21:40So God has all these plans. And so Paul's encouraged by this
- 21:45vision that the Lord gave him, and it says he continued there a
- 21:48year and six months teaching the word of God among them.
- 21:51This particular town was the place that Paul spent his most
- 21:57time. He's never been in a place this
- 21:59long in regard to ministry, 18 months.
- 22:02So he's discipling, he's teaching, he's educating, he's
- 22:05equipping, he's establishing this church.
- 22:08And of course, we studied First and 2nd Corinthians.
- 22:11You remember a lot of the craziness in that church that
- 22:14carried over from the culture, people getting drunk at the
- 22:17agape feast, sexual immorality in the church.
- 22:20I mean, this whole kind of messes, egos, some saying, well,
- 22:23I prefer Paul's preaching. I prefer Apollo's preaching,
- 22:26preaching. I I prefer Cephas Peters
- 22:29preaching. And Paul had to teach him, hey,
- 22:31it's not what these guys are doing, it's what the spirits
- 22:35doing. All they're doing is watering,
- 22:37watering the word into your heart so only God can give the
- 22:40increase. So he said, you know, you don't
- 22:42have favorites, you don't play this kind of political game,
- 22:45just a lot of things in the in the city of Corinth, even after
- 22:48the church established that needed to be dealt with.
- 22:52And then it says in verse 12 on Galileo, Galileo was his name
- 22:56was pro council of Archaea. The Jews with 1 accord rose up
- 23:00against Paul and brought him to the judgment seeing saying this
- 23:05fellow persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.
- 23:09Once again, these rebel rousers, these Jewish people is
- 23:12continually causing problems in the in the city are causing
- 23:16problems again, trying to set Paul up and lying about what it
- 23:20is he's doing. And so when Paul was about to
- 23:23open his mouth, and this is interesting too, I got to give a
- 23:27defense. If I'm slandered, if I'm accused
- 23:29of something I didn't do, the first thing you want to do is
- 23:35clarify to people who are judging or accusing you,
- 23:38especially if it's a legal issue.
- 23:40This is what my testimony is. This is what the truth is.
- 23:43Well, he didn't even have to say anything.
- 23:45He was getting ready to speak this pro council leader.
- 23:48And this would be in the center of the city, a high platform
- 23:51where people would bring grievances to this judge and he
- 23:54would have to make a ruling. Thanks for joining us on today's
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace, a ministry of Calvary
- 24:02Chapel, Westmoreland. Today, Pastor Clark is teaching
- 24:05about the book of Acts. And as we learn more about Acts,
- 24:09it becomes clear that the early church didn't miss a single
- 24:12opportunity to share the gospel. In nearly every chapter, you see
- 24:16apostles like Peter and Paul stepping into conversations,
- 24:20crowds, and crises with boldness, ready to proclaim the
- 24:25name of Jesus. Their example challenges us to
- 24:28consider how we might step into gospel moments in our own lives.
- 24:33What doors might God open this week for you to speak truth,
- 24:36offer hope, or live out your faith in a way that points
- 24:40others to Him? The story of Acts reminds us we
- 24:43are part of the same mission. Today, let's live with eyes open
- 24:47and hearts ready to respond. We hope you are challenged by
