- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome back to the program. In
- 0:03Speaker 1: this episode, we're going to pick up where we left
- 0:05Speaker 1: off with the expert reports in the Brian Kohlberger case. 21.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Photographs included in the forensic biology report related to the
- 0:16Speaker 1: laboratory analysis of the knife sheath provide closer images of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the spatter stains associated with impact on the exposed surface
- 0:24Speaker 1: back of the knife sheath. A. Presumptive testing for the
- 0:28Speaker 1: presence of blood in the stains on the back of
- 0:31Speaker 1: the knife sheath was positive. B. Subsequent DNA testing of
- 0:35Speaker 1: the stains on the back of the knife sheath revealed
- 0:38Speaker 1: a mixture of DNA. 1. Kaley-Gonsalves matches the major profile
- 0:42Speaker 1: of DNA. 2. Madison-Mogan is a potential contributor to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: minor component of DNA. The back of the knife sheath
- 0:50Speaker 1: was exposed to spatter stains, which originated from impacts to
- 0:54Speaker 1: Kaley-Gonsalves and Madison-Mogan. 22. The front strap of the knife
- 0:58Speaker 1: sheath was swabbed and tested as item 1.1, as indicated
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the attached image. A. DNA from Brian Kohlberger was
- 1:07Speaker 1: identified on the front strap of the knife sheath. Idaho
- 1:10Speaker 1: State Police Forensic Service Lab, number M2022-4843, page 8 of 9,
- 1:14Speaker 1: of note packet. Third level bedroom door, 23. Stain 48
- 1:17Speaker 1: on the opening edge of the door. to Madison Mogan's
- 1:27Speaker 1: bedroom is depicted in image DSC 4863. Stain 48 is
- 1:33Speaker 1: a swipe, a stain that originates approximately 4 feet 1
- 1:36Speaker 1: inch above the floor and is approximately 2 inches in length.
- 1:41Speaker 1: It continues to approximately 4 feet 3 inches above the floor.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Image ISP 4885 shows this swipe in closer perspective. Swipe
- 1:52Speaker 1: stains are caused by a transfer of blood from a
- 1:54Speaker 1: blood-bearing surface onto another surface, with characteristics that indicate relative
- 1:59Speaker 1: motion between the two surfaces. Stain number 48 was pre-logged
- 2:04Speaker 1: into the ISPFS system as stain 42-29. This sample was
- 2:09Speaker 1: then assigned the laboratory number of 7730. Testing showed the
- 2:14Speaker 1: sample to originate from Kaylee Gonsalves. B. There is no
- 2:18Speaker 1: physical evidence to indicate that either Ms. Gonsalves or Ms.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Mogan created this transfer stain. 24. DSC 4857 cropped was
- 2:29Speaker 1: taken by the Forensic Field Services team on November 17, 2022,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and shows a second area of swipe transfer stain on
- 2:37Speaker 1: the opening edge of the bedroom door, as indicated by
- 2:40Speaker 1: Marker X. A. Subsequent testing at Marker X showed a
- 2:45Speaker 1: mixture of DNA. 1. Kaylee Gonsalves matches the major profile
- 2:50Speaker 1: of this mixture. 2. Madison Mogan is a potential contributor
- 2:54Speaker 1: to the minor component of this mixture. B. There is
- 2:58Speaker 1: no physical evidence to indicate that Ms. Gonsalves or Ms.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Mogan created this swipe on the edge of the door.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Exterior surface, third level bedroom door. 25. Marker 42 and
- 3:10Speaker 1: image DSC 4585 and DSC 4587 depicts a pattern transfer
- 3:18Speaker 1: stain near the hinged side of the exterior surface of
- 3:21Speaker 1: the third level bedroom door. A. A pattern transfer is
- 3:25Speaker 1: created when a patterned object which was wet with liquid
- 3:29Speaker 1: blood made contact with the surface. B. The appearance of
- 3:33Speaker 1: this stain is consistent with diluted blood, creating this pattern transfer.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Diluted blood is created when blood is mixed with another liquid.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Stairwell from third level to the switchback. 26. The stairwell
- 3:47Speaker 1: from the third level to level 2 is depicted in
- 3:49Speaker 1: DSC 4730. A. Transfer stain designated stain 41 is indicated
- 3:56Speaker 1: on the top of the banister and indicated by the
- 3:58Speaker 1: yellow arrow. B. Stains N and O are indicated on
- 4:03Speaker 1: the wall below the banister. I. Presumptive testing for blood
- 4:07Speaker 1: was positive with stains N and O. 27. Stain 41
- 4:09Speaker 1: is indicated is depicted in images DSC 4578 and DSC
- 4:17Speaker 1: 4580 and DSC 4582, and consists of two pattern transfer
- 4:23Speaker 1: stains on the handrail between the third level and the
- 4:26Speaker 1: second level of the residence. A. Pattern transfer stains were
- 4:30Speaker 1: created when an object with a similar pattern object, which
- 4:34Speaker 1: was wet with blood, made contact with the handrail of
- 4:37Speaker 1: the stairway. B. Swiping motion is visible within the pattern transfer.
- 4:41Speaker 1: as depicted by the yellow arrow inserted into the image
- 4:44Speaker 1: DSC 4582. C. Stain 41 was positive with presumptive testing
- 4:50Speaker 1: for blood. D. DNA testing matched Madison-Mogan. 28. Stains M
- 4:58Speaker 1: and L are located on the inner side of the
- 5:00Speaker 1: banister of the stairs between level 3 and the switchback
- 5:03Speaker 1: as depicted in DSC 4728. A. Stains M and L
- 5:09Speaker 1: are like color transfer stains as depicted in DSC 4736
- 5:14Speaker 1: and DSC 4734. B. Presumptive testing for the presence of
- 5:19Speaker 1: blood was positive with stains M and L. The switchback
- 5:24Speaker 1: leading down to level 2. 29. The location of stain
- 5:28Speaker 1: K is indicated in images DSC 4726 at the switchback
- 5:34Speaker 1: between the level of 3 and 2. A. Stain K
- 5:38Speaker 1: is light color transfer stain on the wall at the
- 5:40Speaker 1: switchback between level 3 and level 2. Stain K can
- 5:44Speaker 1: be seen in more detail in image DSC 4732 cropped. B.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Presumptive testing for the presence of blood was positive with
- 5:53Speaker 1: stain K. Stain J indicated in image DSC 4718 can
- 5:59Speaker 1: be seen in more detail in image DSC 4723 cropped. A.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Stain J It is light color transfer stain on the
- 6:08Speaker 1: wall at the bottom of the stairs between level 3
- 6:10Speaker 1: and level 2. B. Presumptive testing for the presence of
- 6:13Speaker 1: blood was positive with stain J. Living Room Area 31
- 6:19Speaker 1: ISP 4576 depicts a living room area of the residence.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Within this area, there is a sofa, a television, and
- 6:28Speaker 1: a beer pong table. A metal frame console table is
- 6:31Speaker 1: partially visible against the wall opposite the sofa. A narrow
- 6:35Speaker 1: path exists between the metal console table and the beer
- 6:38Speaker 1: pong table. Two overturned red cups and a partially empty
- 6:43Speaker 1: Bud Light lime bottle is noted on the beer pong
- 6:45Speaker 1: table along with a wooden handled knife. 32. DSC 4690
- 6:51Speaker 1: depicts the overall location of the two stained areas on
- 6:54Speaker 1: the beer pong table. A stained 39 is indicated by
- 6:58Speaker 1: the yellow arrow on top of the table and shown
- 7:01Speaker 1: in greater detail in DSC 4574. 1. Presumptive testing of
- 7:06Speaker 1: stain 39 for blood was positive. 2. Stain 39 demonstrates
- 7:11Speaker 1: the appearance of diluted bloodstain. 3. The stain on the
- 7:15Speaker 1: table revealed the DNA of Kelly-Gonzalez. B. The presence of
- 7:20Speaker 1: an overturned cup in the vicinity of stain 39 is
- 7:23Speaker 1: a potential source of the dilution if the cup in
- 7:25Speaker 1: fact contained a source of liquid. It's unclear if this
- 7:29Speaker 1: cup contained liquid at some time or if it was
- 7:32Speaker 1: part of the setup for the beer pong game. C.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Spatter stain F is on the edge of the west
- 7:37Speaker 1: side of the table. It's depicted by the orange arrow
- 7:40Speaker 1: in DSC 4690, and it's shown in greater detail in
- 7:44Speaker 1: DSC 4694. 1. Presumptive testing of stain F for blood
- 7:49Speaker 1: was positive. 2. DNA from this stain was not identified. 3.
- 7:54Speaker 1: The extremely elongated shape of stains is attributable to an
- 7:59Speaker 1: acute angle of incidence between the source of object and
- 8:02Speaker 1: the side of the beer pong table. 33. Image ISP
- 8:08Speaker 1: 4687 depicts the view looking across the beer pong table
- 8:11Speaker 1: towards the bedroom assigned to Zanaker Nodal. Across from the
- 8:14Speaker 1: beer pong table is the metal console table referenced earlier.
- 8:18Speaker 1: On the right side of this image, you can see
- 8:21Speaker 1: half wall with a wooden ledge and the stairs leading
- 8:24Speaker 1: from the second level down to the first level parking
- 8:26Speaker 1: lot entrance on the north side of the residence. Near
- 8:30Speaker 1: the middle of the frame is The hallway leading from
- 8:32Speaker 1: the living room to the bedroom of Zanna Kernodle is depicted.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Stairway leading down from level 2 to level 1. 34.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Stain D is located on the wooden ledge of the
- 8:45Speaker 1: half wall in the living room. The location of Stain
- 8:49Speaker 1: D is depicted in DSC 4682 and a closer view
- 8:53Speaker 1: is depicted in DSC 4683 cropped. A. Stain D was tested.
- 8:59Speaker 1: for the presumptive presence of blood and was positive. B.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Stain D is a transfer blood stain. C. Subsequent testing
- 9:07Speaker 1: of stain D on the edge of the ledge showed
- 9:09Speaker 1: a mixture of DNA. 1. Ethan Chapin being the primary contributor. D.
- 9:15Speaker 1: There is no physical evidence to indicate that Ethan Chapin
- 9:18Speaker 1: was ever outside of the bedroom after sustaining his bloodletting injuries. 35.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Stain E on the top of the wooden ledge is
- 9:26Speaker 1: depicted as DSC 4685 and DSC 4687 cropped. A. Stain
- 9:34Speaker 1: E was tested for the presumptive presence of blood and
- 9:37Speaker 1: was positive. B. Stain E consists of two diluted spatter stains. C.
- 9:43Speaker 1: The shape of the spatter show they're traveling from the
- 9:46Speaker 1: area of the living room towards the stairwell opening in
- 9:49Speaker 1: the direction of the yellow arrows. D. The coloration at
- 9:53Speaker 1: the edge characteristic of stain E shows concentration around the
- 9:57Speaker 1: outer periphery indicative of a diluted stain. Stain E was
- 10:01Speaker 1: not tested further. 36. Three areas of staining are noted
- 10:06Speaker 1: in the stairwell between the second level and the first
- 10:09Speaker 1: level as depicted in DSC 4430. On the north wall
- 10:13Speaker 1: these stains are labeled as 23 and 24 and stain
- 10:15Speaker 1: 27 is in the area located above the steps. Stain
- 10:21Speaker 1: 23 is depicted in more detail in image DSC 4400 cropped,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and stain 24 is shown in more detail in image
- 10:29Speaker 1: DSC 4402. A close-up view of stain 27 is depicted
- 10:34Speaker 1: in DSC 4435. A. Stains 23 and 24 and 27
- 10:35Speaker 1: were tested for the presumptive presence of blood and were positive. B.
- 10:46Speaker 1: The location and distribution of stains 23, 24, and 27
- 10:50Speaker 1: are consistent with cast-off mechanism while their physical appearance is
- 10:54Speaker 1: consistent with diluted blood. 1. Cast-off is created when blood
- 10:59Speaker 1: is released as a result of a bloodied object in motion. 2.
- 11:03Speaker 1: The appearance of the blood stains reveal that the blood
- 11:06Speaker 1: has been diluted by another liquid. c. DNA testing of
- 11:11Speaker 1: the stains from the north wall, stain 27, of the
- 11:13Speaker 1: stairwell shows a mixture of DNA. 1. Kaylee Gonsalves matches
- 11:18Speaker 1: the major component. 2. Madison Mogan is a potential contributor
- 11:22Speaker 1: to the minor component. D. There is no physical evidence
- 11:26Speaker 1: to indicate that Kaylee Gonsalves or Madison Mogan was in
- 11:30Speaker 1: this location after sustaining their bloodletting injuries. Alright folks, we're
- 11:35Speaker 1: going to wrap up right here. And in the next
- 11:37Speaker 1: episode dealing with the topic, we're going to pick up
- 11:39Speaker 1: with number 37. All the information that goes with this
- 11:42Speaker 1: episode can be found in the description box.
