- Lucas: Ciao a tutti, and welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Feeling a little lost today, Lucas. But in a good way. Lucas: Oh? Lost how? Luna: Well, I'm thinking about visiting Italy, and I know I'll need to ask for directions. So I thought, why not learn those phrases today? Lucas: Perfect choice. Asking for and understanding directions is super useful. Let's start with the most basic question: Dov'è? That means 'Where is?' Let's hear it: Dov'è. Luna: Dov'è. Lucas: Good! So if you want to ask 'Where is the train station?', you'd say: Dov'è la stazione? Luna: Dov'è la stazione? That's 'Where is the train station?' Lucas: Exactly. And remember from our train station episode, stazione is train station. So now imagine you're in a new city, and you need to find the pharmacy, like we talked about in episode 45. Dov'è la farmacia? Luna: Dov'è la farmacia? Where is the pharmacy? Got it. Lucas: But asking is just half the battle. You also need to understand the answer. So let's learn some direction words. First: gira a sinistra — 'turn left'. Say it with me: gira a sinistra. Luna: Gira a sinistra. That's a mouthful! Let me try again: gira a sinistra. Lucas: Better! And the opposite: gira a destra — 'turn right'. Repeat: gira a destra. Luna: Gira a destra. Okay, left and right. What about going straight? Lucas: That's sempre dritto — 'straight ahead' or 'go straight'. Try: sempre dritto. Luna: Sempre dritto. So if someone says 'gira a sinistra, poi sempre dritto' that's 'turn left, then go straight'? Lucas: Exactly! And two more handy words: qui and lì. Qui means 'here', and lì means 'there'. So if someone points and says 'è qui', it's 'it's here'. If they say 'è lì', it's 'it's over there'. Luna: Qui and lì. Short and sweet. Lucas: Let's put it all together. Imagine you're at a market from episode 35, and you want to find the fruit stall. You ask: Dov'è la frutta? And the vendor says: Gira a destra, poi sempre dritto, è lì. Luna: Okay, let me break that down: 'Turn right, then go straight, it's there.' Perfect! Lucas: You got it. Want to practice a short dialogue? Luna: Yes, please! You be the local, I'll be the lost tourist. Lucas: Okay. So you say: Dov'è il ristorante? Luna: Dov'è il ristorante? Lucas: And I reply: Gira a sinistra, poi gira a destra, è qui. Luna: Gira a sinistra, poi gira a destra, è qui. So I need to turn left, then right, and it's here. Got it! Lucas: See, you're already navigating like a pro. Let's review all five phrases one more time. Repeat after me: Dov'è...? Luna: Dov'è...? Lucas: Gira a sinistra. Luna: Gira a sinistra. Lucas: Gira a destra. Luna: Gira a destra. Lucas: Sempre dritto. Luna: Sempre dritto. Lucas: Qui and lì. Luna: Qui and lì. I think I've got them. Lucas: And remember, you can always pull up this episode on Fexingo for a quick refresher before your trip. Luna: Absolutely. Thanks for getting me unlost, Lucas. I'm ready to explore Italy now! Lucas: You'll do great. Grazie for listening, and we'll see you next time on Learn Italian with Fexingo. Luna: Ciao ciao!
