Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Inside Scoop with FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Ken aj is out this week, so we are going
- 0:10Speaker 1: to talk about the White Sox. Yes, the White Sox
- 0:13Speaker 1: with a big win over the Guardians, and it starts
- 0:15Speaker 1: to get us thinking, can this team actually do a
- 0:18Speaker 1: little bit of adding at the trade deadline to show
- 0:21Speaker 1: some signs of life that they care about this year's
- 0:24Speaker 1: playoff run without sacrificing too much of the future. Where
- 0:28Speaker 1: do you think they stand if they're basically here a
- 0:30Speaker 1: month from now.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Scott, I would think that is exactly where they stand.
- 0:35Speaker 2: We'll try to improve the club, but without sacrificing too
- 0:38Speaker 2: much of the future because they are still pointing toward
- 0:41Speaker 2: a more sustainable future, which all teams, of course are
- 0:44Speaker 2: always pointing toward. So yeah, I expect them, if they're
- 0:48Speaker 2: in this position to add, and pitching clearly would be
- 0:51Speaker 2: the focus. Bullpen. We saw Sir Anthony de Mingez blow
- 0:55Speaker 2: the save last night. That's one area. Starting pitching would
- 0:58Speaker 2: be another. It's so interesting to me, the Cardinals, the
- 1:02Speaker 2: White Sox, the Nationals, three teams that never thought they
- 1:07Speaker 2: would be anywhere near playoff position, or at least didn't
- 1:11Speaker 2: anticipate that, and here they are and they're going to
- 1:15Speaker 2: have to readjust their sites. And that's not a bad thing,
- 1:18Speaker 2: that's a good thing. And winning is precious. You don't
- 1:21Speaker 2: always get the chance to do that, and making the
- 1:23Speaker 2: playoffs is precious. So I would expect in each case
- 1:28Speaker 2: those teams, if they are in this position in six weeks,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and remember we're still six weeks away, they're gonna look
- 1:34Speaker 2: at this and say, Okay, let's see if we can
- 1:36Speaker 2: enhance this, keep it going, but without of course trading
- 1:40Speaker 2: top prospects.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Do you think Chris Getz needs more experience in the
- 1:45Speaker 3: trade deadline. I'm not saying you can get it any
- 1:47Speaker 3: other way than just enjoy or being in it, but
- 1:52Speaker 3: to actually trade and make these moves we saw with
- 1:54Speaker 3: Michael Lias. Just some gms can make teams play well,
- 1:59Speaker 3: but then the trade deadline can be a little bit hairy.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Well, you're right, that certainly has been the case with
- 2:05Speaker 2: Elias in the past. But that doesn't mean Chris gets
- 2:10Speaker 2: is incapable of doing this. And certainly you're right he
- 2:14Speaker 2: is eric a first time GM, so he's by definition
- 2:19Speaker 2: inexperienced at the deadline, or at least in this aspect
- 2:22Speaker 2: of the deadline. He's done it the other way as
- 2:24Speaker 2: a seller. So yes, it's a concern, But at the
- 2:28Speaker 2: same time, that's what these guys live for, It's what
- 2:31Speaker 2: fans live for. They want to see their team in it.
- 2:34Speaker 2: They want to see their team play meaningful games in September,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and the White Sox have a chance to do that.
- 2:39Speaker 2: So Chris Gets, I would imagine, without having asked him
- 2:43Speaker 2: this specifically, is rather excited about the possibility of being
- 2:47Speaker 2: a buyer, which he did not anticipate necessarily at the
- 2:51Speaker 2: start of the season.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I mean, if you don't anticipate the start of season,
- 2:56Speaker 3: maybe he doesn't have enough. Is there any issue with
- 2:58Speaker 3: money as far as like, can they add that piece?
- 3:01Speaker 3: I'm not saying they're adding Schooble, but is there a
- 3:04Speaker 3: White Sox issue with money? Because we've heard it before
- 3:06Speaker 3: with Jerry he's not willing to spend in free agency.
- 3:10Speaker 2: There shouldn't be an issue. The payroll is not exactly
- 3:13Speaker 2: over three hundred million, it's not even over two hundred million,
- 3:16Speaker 2: so they should have plenty to spend. And yes, Ryans
- 3:20Speaker 2: dwarf can be I don't know the word I want
- 3:24Speaker 2: to use exactly, but typefisted with the money. But at
- 3:27Speaker 2: the same time, there have been times throughout their history
- 3:30Speaker 2: under him where he has spent when he felt there
- 3:33Speaker 2: was an opportunity to win, and I would think at
- 3:36Speaker 2: his age, given these opportunities are fleeting, he is not
- 3:40Speaker 2: going to let money stand in the way here, and
- 3:44Speaker 2: Schooble would be an outlier for them. It's not necessarily
- 3:47Speaker 2: a logical thing to trade top prospects for a rental
- 3:50Speaker 2: in the white sox position. But if it's i don't know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: a three million dollar, four million dollar, five million dollar edition,
- 3:58Speaker 2: I don't see why they wouldn't do that. But again,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I'm not the owner of the team, and I'm not
- 4:02Speaker 2: inside Jerry Reinsdorf's head.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Or in his wallet, which might need a little bit
- 4:08Speaker 3: might need a little extra help. You just mentioned Scooble,
- 4:11Speaker 3: and we talked about to Bob Nightingale yesterday about him
- 4:15Speaker 3: the Braves possibly being a sleeper team. Can you expand
- 4:18Speaker 3: on that at all or the other front runners that
- 4:22Speaker 3: you're hearing or surmising well?
- 4:25Speaker 2: I wrote last week Eric that the most likely teams,
- 4:28Speaker 2: not the only teams, but the most likely teams to
- 4:30Speaker 2: do this would be the teams that are in position
- 4:33Speaker 2: to get a bye bypass the first round play a
- 4:37Speaker 2: weaker opponent or at least one that has been expended
- 4:40Speaker 2: in the next round, the first round the division series.
- 4:43Speaker 2: For those teams, the Braves are in that position, and
- 4:47Speaker 2: the Braves are a team also with starting pitching questions,
- 4:50Speaker 2: They've had them going back to the spring for a
- 4:53Speaker 2: couple of months. There they were doing just great with
- 4:56Speaker 2: their starting pitching. And now you're starting to see some
- 4:59Speaker 2: thing happen that are troublesome. Spencer Stryder gets hurt, Price
- 5:03Speaker 2: Elders slowing down. It doesn't look quite as attractive as
- 5:06Speaker 2: it did. So why wouldn't the Braves be involved? A
- 5:10Speaker 2: few weeks ago, might have been on this show, might
- 5:13Speaker 2: have been on my own show, The Fair Territory Show.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I mentioned the Brave system is not highly rated, and
- 5:18Speaker 2: it isn't highly rated by people who do those kinds
- 5:22Speaker 2: of things in the media, and then a fan jumped
- 5:25Speaker 2: me and said, you're wrong, our system's really good. I
- 5:27Speaker 2: hear this all the time from fans, but I actually checked,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and the Braves see their system as pretty darn good
- 5:35Speaker 2: right now, and better than the ratings indicate. The public ratings.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So do they have the potential to make that kind
- 5:42Speaker 2: of trade. They believe they do, at least in terms
- 5:45Speaker 2: of being having the players available. Now do they want
- 5:49Speaker 2: to take on the money, Do they want to make
- 5:50Speaker 2: that kind of trade for a rental all of that
- 5:53Speaker 2: That remains to be seen. But there is no reason
- 5:56Speaker 2: to believe the Braves would not be in this mix.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And while Alexanderopolis that President Base Operations, hasn't made this
- 6:03Speaker 2: particular kind of deal in his tenure with the Braves,
- 6:07Speaker 2: he sure did in twenty fifteen with David Price and
- 6:10Speaker 2: getting him for the Toronto Blue Jayskrats.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Mint Mobile plans still just fifteen bucks a month, and.
- 6:21Speaker 3: You're getting a ton from that fifteen dollars.
- 6:24Speaker 1: That's right, And we've talked about this for a while.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It hasn't changed. It's still all there for you. I'm
- 6:30Speaker 1: talking about unlimited talk, text and data, fast, reliable coverage
- 6:33Speaker 1: on the nation's largest five G network, oh and an
- 6:36Speaker 1: award winning care team. Mint Mobile has it all for
- 6:39Speaker 1: fifteen bucks a month. You can even bring your current
- 6:42Speaker 1: phone and your number. Choose from three, six, or twelve

- 7:14Speaker 1: for details. Hey, Ken, I want to ask you a
- 7:18Speaker 1: follow up on Scooble and the asking price. There's been
- 7:21Speaker 1: a lot of debate about what that could look like.
- 7:24Speaker 1: How much would get discounted Based on this just being
- 7:27Speaker 1: only a half season, Like you mentioned, it could rule
- 7:30Speaker 1: out some teams like the White Sox. Are the Cardinals
- 7:34Speaker 1: even if they're in the wildcard mix going to trade
- 7:36Speaker 1: a lot to get Scooble. So curious because once the
- 7:39Speaker 1: market shrinks teams, and I know there'll still be plenty
- 7:41Speaker 1: of teams, it does change the asking price because the
- 7:44Speaker 1: bidding changes. So anyway, just curious for your take on
- 7:47Speaker 1: how multiple layers could tweak what this looks like.
- 7:51Speaker 2: First of all, it's the acquisition costs that will deter
- 7:56Speaker 2: some teams and compel them to offer less. Then you
- 8:00Speaker 2: might think Terrek Scouble would be worth assuming he is
- 8:03Speaker 2: healthy and pitching well. With the deadline, we can't necessarily
- 8:06Speaker 2: assume that we need to see that play out. But
- 8:09Speaker 2: if he becomes available, you're looking at two things. You're
- 8:13Speaker 2: looking at a price in terms of salary nearly ten
- 8:18Speaker 2: million for the rest of the season. That's one thing
- 8:20Speaker 2: that will take some teams out of the equation right
- 8:23Speaker 2: then and there. You're also looking at a prospect cost.
- 8:26Speaker 2: And I'm sure Tiger's President Base Operations Scott Harris, is
- 8:30Speaker 2: going to drive a hard bargain, as he should if
- 8:33Speaker 2: he is indeed willing to trade Trek Schouble. So the
- 8:36Speaker 2: two things combined, the prospect price, the salary that you're
- 8:40Speaker 2: taking on, the total acquisition costs that can depress the price.
- 8:45Speaker 2: The other side of this is it's Trek Schouble back
- 8:49Speaker 2: to back American League, say young winner. If he is
- 8:52Speaker 2: performing at the peak of his powers. He is the
- 8:54Speaker 2: kind of guy who can take a team that is
- 8:58Speaker 2: really good and make it into a World Series champion
- 9:01Speaker 2: that is worth the price. And again, we don't know
- 9:05Speaker 2: how this is all going to play out yet. We
- 9:07Speaker 2: don't know if the Tigers, who are surging at the
- 9:10Speaker 2: moment are going to be in the state of mind
- 9:14Speaker 2: where they're not even willing to trade Tarrek Scuobel. I
- 9:17Speaker 2: am sure they'll listen. They have to listen. But if
- 9:20Speaker 2: they are I don't know, five hundred at the deadline
- 9:23Speaker 2: and two games out in the wild card race or
- 9:26Speaker 2: even better position in the division, whatever the case might be,
- 9:29Speaker 2: they're gonna think twice. I don't know that that's going
- 9:32Speaker 2: to happen, and I don't know that they can keep
- 9:34Speaker 2: playing like this the rest of the year. But these
- 9:37Speaker 2: various different parts of the equation are all going to
- 9:41Speaker 2: be factored into the mix.
- 9:44Speaker 3: One last thing with Scooble, and maybe you don't know this,
- 9:47Speaker 3: but I when you're just talking there, I was thinking
- 9:50Speaker 3: about Shoho Tani and putting butts in the seats when
- 9:53Speaker 3: he was at the Angels, and Artie Mourno's a different cat.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I get that. Is there a case where the front office,
- 10:00Speaker 3: even ownership with the Tiger says no, no, no, no, we
- 10:03Speaker 3: got to make sure we get seven more starts, even
- 10:06Speaker 3: if we're out of it, where we were to keep
- 10:08Speaker 3: Trek Scruber because he is beloved in the city of Detroit,
- 10:13Speaker 3: I would.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Think eric that comes into play, But more of what
- 10:18Speaker 2: comes into play are the team's chances and if they believe, hey,
- 10:22Speaker 2: we made it to the playoffs the last two years.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Last year we nearly made it to the ALCS, came
- 10:28Speaker 2: really close. We have Trek Scoogle, our team has finally
- 10:31Speaker 2: straightened out. If all of this happens, then you're looking
- 10:35Speaker 2: at that part of it and taking one last chance
- 10:39Speaker 2: with Schoogle before you lose him to free agency for
- 10:42Speaker 2: only a draft pick. And that is the cost benefit
- 10:46Speaker 2: analysis the Tigers are going to have to pursue and
- 10:50Speaker 2: embark upon, because it's not an easy answer if they
- 10:55Speaker 2: are even close to being in contention. If they're out
- 10:59Speaker 2: of it, easy answer, you trade him. But if there's
- 11:01Speaker 2: a chance of making the playoffs and maybe even winning
- 11:04Speaker 2: the division, yeah, at that point you look at it
- 11:08Speaker 2: and you look at it differently. I'm just not sure
- 11:12Speaker 2: if the Tigers look at this realistically and if they
- 11:14Speaker 2: look at their team, assuming the surge doesn't continue and
- 11:18Speaker 2: they kind of level off again that they're going to say,
- 11:21Speaker 2: you know what, we have a chance to win the
- 11:23Speaker 2: World Series even with school, but I'm not sure they
- 11:26Speaker 2: can see themselves that way. If they end up seeing
- 11:29Speaker 2: themselves that way, then sure you keep him. And part
- 11:32Speaker 2: of it does come to the realization that you don't
- 11:37Speaker 2: want your fans to be alienated by a trade with
- 11:40Speaker 2: a team in contention like that when you've come close twice.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Now with Ark Schoogle, that's why they came close. Yes,
- 11:48Speaker 3: but let's go to another Dave Dombrowski team, the team
- 11:52Speaker 3: he's with currently, the Phillies. Where is this where is
- 11:57Speaker 3: this deadline gonna go? In the sense of of Dombrowski
- 12:01Speaker 3: being aggressive? We know he's aggressive. We've asked that and
- 12:03Speaker 3: he's answered every time. Is it a case where you
- 12:06Speaker 3: could trade for a major piece with a hurt aidan
- 12:10Speaker 3: miller with a beleaguered farm system that had you know,
- 12:14Speaker 3: he was their top guy or one of their top guys.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Could they delve that deep into their prospects or is
- 12:20Speaker 3: there another route that the Phillies will need to take.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's a good question, Eric, and their system is not
- 12:28Speaker 2: considered to be that great, right now, and yes, Aiden
- 12:31Speaker 2: Miller is hurt. He's actually a player that might have
- 12:34Speaker 2: contributed to them this year if he was healthy. So
- 12:39Speaker 2: I don't know that they have the prospects necessarily to
- 12:41Speaker 2: get Schooble. But we talk about this kind of thing
- 12:44Speaker 2: all the time. This team doesn't have the players, and
- 12:46Speaker 2: yet a team like the Padres, we say that about
- 12:49Speaker 2: them all the time, they seem to come up with players.
- 12:52Speaker 2: For the Phillies. They're in an interesting spot because they're
- 12:54Speaker 2: already over the luxury tax threshold, the highest one, and
- 12:58Speaker 2: they are a team that clear because of their age
- 13:02Speaker 2: and because of Dombrowski's past dealings. Our team that's going
- 13:07Speaker 2: to be aggressive. They're going to try to press the
- 13:10Speaker 2: issue a little bit with whatever they do. So I
- 13:14Speaker 2: would expect they will be active. And remember last year
- 13:17Speaker 2: Dombrowski went out and got Duran best reliever available. I
- 13:21Speaker 2: don't know that they can duplicate that with the right
- 13:23Speaker 2: handed hitting bat that they need. I don't know if
- 13:24Speaker 2: that there is going to be a guy out there
- 13:26Speaker 2: like that. Scooble is an interesting question for me if
- 13:29Speaker 2: he becomes available with them, because Dombrowski loves hard throwers
- 13:34Speaker 2: and can you imagine that rotation Wheeler, Sanchez, Scooble not
- 13:41Speaker 2: necessarily in this order, plus hazus Lozardo. I mean that
- 13:45Speaker 2: is a potentially World Series championship rotation. So maybe you
- 13:50Speaker 2: do some other things to get prospects. Maybe you trade
- 13:53Speaker 2: one of your younger hitters, like a Bomb or a
- 13:55Speaker 2: Stot and redo the team in that fashion. I don't know,
- 14:00Speaker 2: but Dave Dombrowski generally speaking, is yes, very aggressive, and
- 14:05Speaker 2: I expect him to be that way again.
- 14:07Speaker 3: The China is now, the timing is now for the Twins.
- 14:10Speaker 3: The Twins are two I think two games out of
- 14:12Speaker 3: the Wildcard. They lost last night, so I might be
- 14:15Speaker 3: off on that, but don't quote me either way. The
- 14:18Speaker 3: Twins are in. It Is there a chance they still
- 14:21Speaker 3: trade Joe Ryan because I feel like with his control,
- 14:25Speaker 3: our team control, and his ability, he could be a
- 14:28Speaker 3: major piece to a team.
- 14:30Speaker 2: They're an interesting club because they have played better than
- 14:33Speaker 2: most of us expected, and their new head of the
- 14:38Speaker 2: operation not Baseball Operations, but the guy who was running
- 14:41Speaker 2: the show, Tom poll Out, has basically said wants to
- 14:44Speaker 2: contend and wants to win. So if that's the case,
- 14:48Speaker 2: you're not going to go in the direction that you
- 14:50Speaker 2: went last year, especially if you maintain this position in
- 14:54Speaker 2: the al Central and in the wildcard standings. Yes, they
- 14:57Speaker 2: are fairly close. They're still under five hundred. They're not great,
- 15:01Speaker 2: but they've played better than a lot of us thought,
- 15:03Speaker 2: pitch better than a lot of us thought, especially after
- 15:05Speaker 2: trading their entire bullpen last year. So it's too early
- 15:10Speaker 2: to know what they'll do with Joe Ryan, and I
- 15:12Speaker 2: know your next question is going to be about Buxton.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I would read Dan Hayes's article in The Athletic last week,
- 15:18Speaker 2: in which Buxton was very clear again saying I'm a twin. Now.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Might that change if they trade Ryan and Ryan Jeffers
- 15:26Speaker 2: and they tell Byron Buxton, listen how it's going to
- 15:29Speaker 2: be a few years we're rebuilding. I guess it's not
- 15:32Speaker 2: out of the realm of possibility, but that does not
- 15:34Speaker 2: seem to be the direction Tom Pohlad wants to take this.
- 15:37Speaker 2: So I would say Byron Buxton stays.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You know why you are enjoying this minute because we're happy. Krats.
- 15:45Speaker 1: We're happy because we're wearing mac Weldon.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yes, I'm six foot five and nobody can give me
- 15:51Speaker 3: tall clothing. But mack Weldon allows me to have it
- 15:54Speaker 3: so I don't really have to care about how I look,
- 15:58Speaker 3: and I still look good. Because I don't put a
- 16:00Speaker 3: lot of time into what I do to pick out
- 16:02Speaker 3: my clothes. Mack Weldon takes care of it for me.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Classic always in style made from the world's most comfortable
- 16:08Speaker 1: performance materials. Summer, get sweaty, don't let unnecessary sweat spots emerge.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Mack Weldon's air Knit X fabric helps you out. Their
- 16:17Speaker 1: lightest fabric is fused with nylon mesh for maximum airflow.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Skip the midday wardrobe changes. The barely there feel also
- 16:25Speaker 1: keeps you feeling more dry and fresh. Don't sweat the
- 16:28Speaker 1: heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool as you look
- 16:31Speaker 1: with mack Weldon. Go to Mackweldon dot com and get
- 16:33Speaker 1: twenty percent off your first order of one hundred and
- 16:35Speaker 1: twenty five bucks or more with promo code foul. That's
- 16:38Speaker 1: m ack w E l d O N dot com
- 16:41Speaker 1: code foul. Okay, let me take you to a team
- 16:45Speaker 1: that we didn't necessarily think could be buying it the
- 16:48Speaker 1: trade deadline, but right now they are trending that way.
- 16:51Speaker 1: The Miami Marlins so there's this is a two parter,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and I'm bringing this up right now too, because we've
- 16:56Speaker 1: got people in the chat asking and I'm like, bring
- 16:58Speaker 1: it on. So Marlins was the next one. They came up.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Two party here for you, Ken one. Do they actually buy? Two?
- 17:04Speaker 1: How does this affect Sandy el Contra's future with the team?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Let me start with our Contra because this is not
- 17:12Speaker 2: your everyday pitcher that you trade the deadline because he
- 17:16Speaker 2: has another year on his contract and it's big money
- 17:19Speaker 2: and that's the time to act. He means a lot
- 17:22Speaker 2: to that organization, and the owner loves him, the GM
- 17:26Speaker 2: the front office love him, the players love him. He
- 17:28Speaker 2: is kind of their heart and soul. So when you're
- 17:31Speaker 2: trading him, you're not just trading one of your best
- 17:34Speaker 2: starting pitchers, which of course he is. You're also trading
- 17:37Speaker 2: a guy who means a lot to the franchise. They've
- 17:41Speaker 2: been reluctant to do that in the past. Given the
- 17:43Speaker 2: way they're playing, and they too have been hot in June,
- 17:46Speaker 2: I would think they're going to be reluctant to do
- 17:48Speaker 2: that again. And then it gets to your next question, Scott,
- 17:51Speaker 2: would they actually buy? Certainly they have the ability to
- 17:55Speaker 2: increase their payroll. It's one of the lowest in the game,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and certainly they can certain look at some things and determine, okay,
- 18:02Speaker 2: we can use some help here there and do along
- 18:05Speaker 2: those lines. But we will see if their president based operations,
- 18:10Speaker 2: Peter Bendix is willing to trade younger players to get
- 18:14Speaker 2: present day help, and we have not seen them do that.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You asked me about Chris Getz earlier. Can he do that?
- 18:19Speaker 2: We don't know if Peter Bendix can do it, because
- 18:21Speaker 2: he really hasn't done it in a meaningful way. And
- 18:24Speaker 2: that will be a test for them, and it will
- 18:26Speaker 2: be a test for not just Bendix, but ownership as well,
- 18:30Speaker 2: what they're willing to take on. I would think, given
- 18:33Speaker 2: what they've done, and given that Clayton mccallaugh has really
- 18:37Speaker 2: done a fantastic job with that organization as manager, and
- 18:41Speaker 2: with Otto Lopez and Liam Hicks who's now injured I know,
- 18:45Speaker 2: and Xavier Edwards becoming a player, Max Meyer having a
- 18:48Speaker 2: real breakout year, some really good things are happening there.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I would think you'd want to continue enhancing that rather
- 18:56Speaker 2: than even mildly tear it apart.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Is there any chance the Nats fall a little bit
- 19:03Speaker 3: more out of it, because they're clearly in contention that CJ.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Abrams possibly gets moved because we heard about it earlier
- 19:10Speaker 3: in the off season.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Oh there's a chance for sure, and especially if they
- 19:17Speaker 2: fall out of it or at least slow down and
- 19:20Speaker 2: start playing not as well. But Abrams is a little
- 19:25Speaker 2: bit tough because most teams do not view him as
- 19:28Speaker 2: a quality defensive shortstop, so you're looking at a guy
- 19:31Speaker 2: that you would want to change positions. Doing that in
- 19:34Speaker 2: the middle of the season is dicey. A few teams
- 19:37Speaker 2: will need a shortstop. Actually creating a position player in
- 19:40Speaker 2: general is always difficult because unlike with a pitcher, you
- 19:43Speaker 2: can just plug the pitcher, in a position player, you
- 19:46Speaker 2: have to have that spot and you have to make
- 19:48Speaker 2: room for him. In that sense, easier to do in
- 19:51Speaker 2: the offseason. And my suspicion is that is when the
- 19:54Speaker 2: Nationals would do this, if they do it at all.
- 19:57Speaker 2: What we should be talking about with the Nationals, if
- 19:59Speaker 2: they CJ. Abrams as a cornerstone player, even if he's
- 20:02Speaker 2: not a shortstop long term is an extension. And of
- 20:06Speaker 2: course we don't ever hear that kind of talk from
- 20:08Speaker 2: the Nationals. I know they went after him on an
- 20:11Speaker 2: extension maybe the spring before last, but the offer wasn't there.
- 20:16Speaker 2: So I would suspect that Abram stays, but maybe becomes
- 20:21Speaker 2: a more realistic possibility in the offseason.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Ken, last one from a fan asking about your thoughts
- 20:28Speaker 1: on the Brewers. I think it's timely since Brandon Woodruff
- 20:30Speaker 1: looked so good on his way back, and you feel like, hey,
- 20:33Speaker 1: this could be the rotation that can carry them. I'm
- 20:35Speaker 1: less concerned about that, Ken, and I just can't get
- 20:38Speaker 1: the image of last year's knockout for them against the
- 20:42Speaker 1: Dodgers out of my head, where you feel like you've
- 20:44Speaker 1: got it, You've got more young prospects coming up, but really,
- 20:47Speaker 1: the bats weren't there, and maybe no bat could solve
- 20:49Speaker 1: what the Dodgers pitching had in that particular round in
- 20:53Speaker 1: the NLCS. But do you think that they would actually
- 20:56Speaker 1: go and look for some really major impact bat to
- 20:59Speaker 1: take that on one of the young guys that they
- 21:01Speaker 1: have in their lineup.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I don't know the answer to that, Scott, and we
- 21:06Speaker 2: all know the Brewers are committed to their young talent.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Now I've written about this, I've talked about this with
- 21:12Speaker 2: regard more to Schooble how they have the young talent
- 21:15Speaker 2: to go do that if they want to, and it's
- 21:18Speaker 2: certainly something that in my view, they should consider. Of course,
- 21:21Speaker 2: we have the example of CC Sabathia years ago and
- 21:25Speaker 2: the impact he made on that franchise. They don't seem
- 21:28Speaker 2: inclined to do that kind of thing, and I just
- 21:31Speaker 2: don't know where that bat would be for them. Ideally
- 21:35Speaker 2: it's an outfielder, a slucking outfielder. But is that guy
- 21:39Speaker 2: going to be out there. I'm not convinced he is.
- 21:42Speaker 2: And if he's not, then you're not going to do
- 21:44Speaker 2: something stupid to pry someone loose that maybe is not
- 21:48Speaker 2: even going to give you the bang for the buck
- 21:49Speaker 2: that you want. So you raise a great point because
- 21:54Speaker 2: last postseason when they lost to the Dodgers, clearly offense
- 21:58Speaker 2: was the problem. But the Dodgers had one of those
- 22:02Speaker 2: amazing series that you just can't say anything about. They
- 22:06Speaker 2: pitched that way and they were at the peak of
- 22:08Speaker 2: their powers, and I don't know that any team was
- 22:10Speaker 2: going to beat them in that particular moment. So when
- 22:14Speaker 2: people say, oh, these small market teams can't win those series,
- 22:17Speaker 2: no they can. And one day they're going to And
- 22:22Speaker 2: it just seems to me that if the Brewers have
- 22:25Speaker 2: this pitching intact with the way their offense goes, if
- 22:29Speaker 2: they get hot offensively like kind of the Blue Jays
- 22:31Speaker 2: did last year, granted they had power in the postseason,
- 22:36Speaker 2: there's no reason they can't make an extended run.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Yep, that's fair, you know what I mean? Like last year,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I'm looking like, does Josh Naylor change things if he's
- 22:43Speaker 1: in that series? He had such a good one with
- 22:44Speaker 1: the Mariner.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Now I would say, yet the answer to that is yes, potentially,
- 22:48Speaker 2: and maybe not in that series. But let's talk about
- 22:52Speaker 2: a Josh Naylor type this year. Would he change things
- 22:55Speaker 2: for them? And I would say the answer to that
- 22:57Speaker 2: is yes.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I think so too. Sometime sometimes just some infusion of
- 23:01Speaker 1: something else to the lineup right can make a difference.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And it's not like it's a bad lineup. It's just
- 23:05Speaker 1: that that lineup's very similar from last year and it
- 23:08Speaker 1: didn't work in that scenario. So Ken, good stuff, Thank
- 23:10Speaker 1: you so much. We'll talk to you soon. Thanks Scott
- 23:13Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal left, you've senior insider. Next one for you,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and great job with the question today. I tried to
- 23:18Speaker 1: be like very clear cutcrats. I was like, now we're
- 23:21Speaker 1: down to business. There's a little over a month ago
- 23:23Speaker 1: until the trade deadline. It's already happening. So at my
- 23:26Speaker 1: name in the chat, let me know your trade question.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I'll try to get to as many as I can
- 23:30Speaker 1: with Ken over the next few weeks. But if you
- 23:32Speaker 1: miss that opportunity, Grill and Ken Mondays and Thursdays, Thursday's
- 23:35Speaker 1: your next chance. Twelve thirty Live Eastern on YouTube
