- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Monday.
- 0:15It is the 6th of January. Wait for it. 2025.
- 0:20Yes, the new year has finally arrived.
- 0:23I don't know whether you get a little bit confused as you head
- 0:25into that last week of the year when you keep on referring to
- 0:28the next year as this year because in your head you kind of
- 0:31moved on but just waiting for the calendar to tick over.
- 0:34But here we are, definitely ticked over moving ahead and you
- 0:37might be thinking 2025, what am I going to do?
- 0:42I reckon there might be some renovations for our place in
- 0:45this year. If that's you, well, you should
- 0:48not listen to this. Because as far as renovations
- 0:50go, as far as opulent, incredible plans go, today's
- 0:55reading takes the cake. Today's reading is all about
- 0:58Solomon planning to build a temple for the Almighty God of
- 1:03the universe. And how on earth do you get an
- 1:05interior decorator to make this place fit for not just a king,
- 1:09but fit for a God? Well, that's what he attempts.
- 1:12So it is quite, quite impressive.
- 1:16So that is what we're going to read today as we continue
- 1:18reading through the Book of First Kings.
- 1:21And in this particular part of the book we are hearing about
- 1:24the heyday of Israel, these incredible days where Solomon,
- 1:28living in God's favour, is going to do some awesome things.
- 1:32So friends, wherever you are, whatever's going on in the early
- 1:36part of the year, welcome, settle yourself in and let us
- 1:40hear the story of God's favour for his earthly king.
- 1:44As we read together First Kings chapter 6,
- 1:58it was in mid spring, in the month of Ziv, during the fourth
- 2:02year of Solomon's reign, that he began to construct the Temple of
- 2:05the Lord. This was 480 years after the
- 2:09people of Israel were rescued from their slavery in the land
- 2:13of Egypt. The Temple that King Solomon
- 2:16built for the Lord was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet
- 2:21high. The entry room at the front of
- 2:24the temple was 30 feet wide, running across the entire width
- 2:28of the temple. It projected outward 15 feet
- 2:31from the front of the temple. Solomon also made narrow
- 2:34recessed windows throughout the temple.
- 2:37He built a complex of rooms against the outer walls of the
- 2:40temple, all the way around the sides and rear of the building.
- 2:45The complex was 3 storeys high, the bottom floor being 7 1/2
- 2:50feet wide, the 2nd floor 9 feet wide, and the top floor 10 1/2
- 2:54feet wide. The rooms were connected to the
- 2:57walls of the temple by beams resting on ledges built out from
- 3:01the wall, so the beams were not inserted into the walls
- 3:04themselves. The stone used in the
- 3:07construction of the temple were finished at the quarry, so there
- 3:11was no sound of hammer, axe, or any other iron tool at the
- 3:15building site. The entrance to the bottom floor
- 3:18was on the South side of the temple.
- 3:21There were winding stairs going up to the second floor and
- 3:24another flight of stairs between the second and third floors.
- 3:28After completing the temple structure, Solomon put in a
- 3:31ceiling made of cedar beams and planks.
- 3:35As already stated, he built a complex of rooms along the sides
- 3:39of the building, attached to the temple walls by cedar beams.
- 3:43Each story of the complex was 7 1/2 feet high.
- 3:47Then the Lord gave this message to Solomon concerning this
- 3:52temple you are building. If you keep all my decrees and
- 3:55regulations and obey all my commands, I will fulfil through
- 4:00you the promise I made to your father David.
- 4:03I will live among the Israelites and will never abandoned my
- 4:07people. Israel, Sir Solomon finished
- 4:10building the temple. The entire inside, from floor to
- 4:13ceiling was panelled with wood. He panelled the walls and
- 4:17ceilings with cedar, and he used planks of Cyprus for the floors.
- 4:22He partitioned off an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place,
- 4:26at the far end of the temple. It was 30 feet deep and was
- 4:30panelled with cedar from floor to ceiling.
- 4:33The main room of the temple outside the Most Holy Place was
- 4:3660 feet long. Cedar panelling completely
- 4:40covered the stone walls throughout the temple, and the
- 4:43panelling was decorated with carvings of gourds and open
- 4:46flowers. He prepared the inner sanctuary
- 4:50at the far end of the temple, where the Ark of the Lord's
- 4:53Covenant would be placed. This inner sanctuary was 30 feet
- 4:56long, 30 feet wide, and 30 feet high.
- 5:00He overlaid the inside with solid gold.
- 5:04He also overlaid the altar made of cedar.
- 5:07Then Solomon overlaid the rest of the temple's interior with
- 5:10solid gold, and he made gold chains to protect the entrance
- 5:14to the Most Holy Place. So he finished overlaying the
- 5:18entire temple with gold, including the altar that
- 5:21belonged to the Most Holy Place. He made two cherubim of wild
- 5:26olive wood, each 15 feet tall, and placed them in the inner
- 5:31sanctuary. The wingspan of each of the
- 5:34cherubim was 15 feet, each wing being 7 1/2 feet long.
- 5:39The two cherubim were identical in shape and size.
- 5:43Each was 15 feet tall. He placed them side by side in
- 5:47the inner sanctuary of the temple.
- 5:49Their outspread wings reached from wall to wall while their
- 5:53inner wings touched at the centre of the room.
- 5:56He overlaid the two cherubim with gold.
- 5:59He decorated all the walls of the inner sanctuary and the main
- 6:03room with carvings of cherubim, palm trees and open flowers.
- 6:08He overlaid the floor of both rooms with gold.
- 6:12For the entrance to the inner sanctuary, he made double doors
- 6:15of wild olive wood with five sided door posts.
- 6:20These double doors were decorated with carvings of
- 6:22cherubim, palm trees and open flowers.
- 6:26The doors including the decorations of cherubim and palm
- 6:28trees were overlaid with gold. Then he made 4 sided door posts
- 6:34of wild olive wood for the entrance to the temple.
- 6:38There were two folding doors of Cypress wood and each door was
- 6:42hinged to fold back upon itself. These doors were decorated with
- 6:47carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, all
- 6:51overlaid evenly with gold. The walls of the inner courtyard
- 6:55were built so that there was one layer of cedar beams between
- 6:59every three layers of finished stone.
- 7:03The foundation of the Lord's temple was laid in mid spring in
- 7:06the month of Ziv, during the fourth year of Solomon's reign.
- 7:10The entire building was completed in every detail by mid
- 7:14autumn in the month of Bull during the 11th year of his
- 7:18reign. So it took seven years to build
- 7:22the temple. Lord, what a magnificent image
- 7:34we see here of this temple that You instruct your servant
- 7:38Solomon to build for you. And there is no way that we
- 7:43could possibly comprehend how on earth we go about making a place
- 7:47that is adequate or fit for you, our king and our God.
- 7:52But this, this was their best attempt.
- 7:55And Lord, it blows our minds that You now choose to live in
- 7:59us. Your Holy Spirit indwells us,
- 8:03and while we, just like this temple, are far from fit to be a
- 8:08place for Your Spirit's dwelling, well, here You are.
- 8:13Because it's not about what you feel you deserve or require for
- 8:18your presence, but it is about your relationship with us, Your
- 8:22people all throughout time. Lord, we see you reaching out
- 8:27and finding ways to forge connection with us, and it is
- 8:32the most incredible gift. And so we just thank you, Lord,
- 8:36that You would continue to reach out to us, to draw near to us,
- 8:40to live in US, and to be a part of our lives ultimately to draw
- 8:46us back into your perfect presence for eternity.
- 8:49Oh, what a gift that is, Lord. So we just lift you up and we
- 8:53thank you for your incredible attention and kindness and
- 8:58presence. We love you and we praise you
- 9:01and we pray all of these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.
