- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is the 7th of September and I
- 0:18am so glad that you have joined me on this spectacular day.
- 0:23Today is the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.
- 0:29It was probably less than a week ago that Ivan and I were having
- 0:32a cup of tea out on the deck in the morning in the chilliness
- 0:36and looking up at the sky, just marvelling at how absolutely
- 0:40beautiful it is. And there are many places in the
- 0:43world where it's not that way, where the sky is Gray or brown,
- 0:46and that's hard for people to be healthy when they're breathing
- 0:49and all of that stuff. So today's the day that we are
- 0:52reminded that we need to make a concerted effort to keep our
- 0:56world beautiful. And if you live in a place like
- 0:58I do, where the sky is gorgeous and clear and blue, that's
- 1:03always remain cognizant of the fact that we need to be active
- 1:06to make sure that we can make as much of this gorgeousness as
- 1:10possible. And Speaking of gorgeousness,
- 1:13that is a terrible segue because there is nothing gorgeous about
- 1:18this time in the history that we are about to dip our toe into.
- 1:21We are going back all the way to the year 705 BC for the next 4
- 1:28chapters. This is the time of Hezekiah's
- 1:31rule. Hezekiah ruled the southern
- 1:33Kingdom of Judah. And this is only 17 years after
- 1:38the Assyrians marched away all of their northern cousins and
- 1:42wiped out the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 1:46So if there is ever a nation that should be feared striking
- 1:50terror into the hearts of people, it is Assyria at this
- 1:54time in Judah. And so in the next 4 chapters,
- 1:57we are going to hear about King Hezekiah's response to the
- 2:02Assyrian empire bearing down on their little nation.
- 2:06And history tells us that Judah will stand against this
- 2:10invasion. It'll be the Babylonians in a
- 2:12while who will take them away. But this is not the time that
- 2:15God has for that to happen. So let's hear all about what
- 2:19this prophet needs to speak to the king about, instructing him
- 2:23of what God would have him do in this current threat.
- 2:28So come back all these thousands of years as we read together
- 2:33Isaiah Chapter 36. In the 14th year of King
- 2:46Hezekiah's reign, King Senate Cherub of Assyria came to attack
- 2:51the fortified towns of Judah and conquered them.
- 2:55Then the king of Assyria sent his chief of staff from Lakish
- 2:59with a huge army to confront King Hezekiah.
- 3:02In Jerusalem, the Assyrians took up a position beside the
- 3:06aqueduct that feeds water into the upper pool near the road
- 3:10leading to the field where cloth is washed.
- 3:13These are the officials who went out to meet with them.
- 3:16Alaya Kim, son of Hilkia, the palace administrator, Shebner,
- 3:22the court secretary, and Joa, son of Asaf, the royal
- 3:26historian. Then the Assyrian King's chief
- 3:29of staff, told them to give this message to Hezekiah.
- 3:33This is what the great king of Assyria says.
- 3:37What are you trusting in that makes you so confident?
- 3:41Do you think that mere words can substitute for military skill
- 3:45and strength? Who are you counting on that you
- 3:48have rebelled against me on Egypt?
- 3:51If you lean on Egypt, it would be like a Reed that splinters
- 3:55beneath your weight and pierces your hand.
- 3:58Pharaoh, the king of Egypt is completely unreliable, but
- 4:03perhaps you will say to me, we are trusting in the Lord our
- 4:06God. But isn't he the one who was
- 4:09insulted by Hezekiah? Didn't Hezekiah tear down his
- 4:13shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem
- 4:17worship only at the altar? Here in Jerusalem, I'll tell you
- 4:21what. Strike a bargain with your
- 4:23master, the King of Assyria. I will give you 2000 horses if
- 4:28you can find that many men to ride on them with your tiny
- 4:33army. How can you think of challenging
- 4:35even the weakest contingent of my master's troops, even with
- 4:39the help of Egypt's Chariots and charioteers?
- 4:42What's more, do you think we have invaded your land without
- 4:46the Lord's direction? The Lord himself told us attack
- 4:50this land and destroy it. Then Alaya, Kim, Shebna and Joa
- 4:56said to the Assyrian Chief of staff, please speak to us and
- 5:01Aramaic, for we understand it well.
- 5:04Don't speak in Hebrew, for the people on the wall will hear.
- 5:09But Senator Cherub's chief of staff replied.
- 5:12Do you think my master sent this message Only to you and your
- 5:16master? He wants all the people to hear
- 5:19it. For when we put this city under
- 5:22siege, they will suffer along with you.
- 5:25They will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat their
- 5:29own dung and drink their own urine.
- 5:33Then the chief of staff stood and shouted in Hebrew to the
- 5:36people on the wall. Listen to this message from the
- 5:40great king of Assyria. This is what the king says.
- 5:44Don't let Hezekiah deceive you. He will never be able to rescue
- 5:50you. Don't let him fool you into
- 5:52trusting in the Lord by saying the Lord will surely rescue us.
- 5:57This city will never fall into the hands of the Assyrian king.
- 6:01Don't listen to Hezekiah. These are the terms the king of
- 6:06Assyria is offering. Make peace with me.
- 6:10Open the gates and come out. Then each of you can continue
- 6:16eating from your own Grapevine and fig tree and drinking from
- 6:20your own. Well.
- 6:22Then I will arrange to take you to another land like this one.
- 6:26A land of grain and new wine, bread and vineyards.
- 6:31Don't let Hezekiah mislead you by saying the Lord will rescue
- 6:35us. Have the gods of any other
- 6:38nation ever saved their people from the King of Assyria?
- 6:43What happened to the gods of Hammeth and Arpad?
- 6:46And what about the gods of Sefavam?
- 6:50Did any God rescue Samaria from my power?
- 6:54What God of any nation has ever been able to save its people
- 6:59from my power? So what makes you think that the
- 7:03Lord can rescue Jerusalem from me?
- 7:07But the people were silent and did not utter a word because
- 7:11Hezekiah had commanded them. Do not answer him.
- 7:16Then Elaya Kim, son of Hilkia, the palace administrator,
- 7:20Shebner, the court secretary, and Joa, son of Asaf, the royal
- 7:24historian, went back to Hezekiah.
- 7:28They tore their clothes in despair and they went in to see
- 7:31the king and told him what the Assyrian chief of staff had
- 7:35said, Gee, it's hard to trust you
- 7:47sometimes. We know that you are powerful
- 7:53and we know that you have our best interest in heart and we
- 7:56know what you would have us do and the way you would have us
- 7:59live and the decisions you would have us make.
- 8:03But Gee, sometimes it feels like there is overwhelming pressure
- 8:07for us to go the other way, to choose the path of greed or the
- 8:12path of self-reliance, or to take the easy way out.
- 8:16Because surely no one's really paying attention or actually
- 8:20expects us to trust in God at a time like this.
- 8:27Here we see this nation, your people, just tested by these
- 8:31incredibly convincing words. Reading this, I would have given
- 8:34up. But you have a better way.
- 8:38You have a bigger picture, You have a greater love.
- 8:43And are we? Thank you, Father, that you are
- 8:47a great God beyond the boundaries of what we can
- 8:50possibly comprehend. So give us your heart to hold
- 8:55true to everything we know to be true in you, even when the world
- 8:59is screaming something different at us.
- 9:02Help us stand firm in what we know of your character and your
- 9:06promises. You are wonderful and we trust
- 9:10you, and we place you above every other.
- 9:15That's in the saving name of Jesus that we pray.
- 9:19Amen.
