- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: I'm feeling good because uh football season is over, basketball season is here on the horizon.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: So I'm just looking forward to getting on that hard word court because the gridiron has finally come to a conclusion.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It's it's ending.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: We're just the last three games are I'm not it's whatever.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not talking about it.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Football sucks.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: I didn't like how the how Saturday night went.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if anyone did the most that was some of the most mind-boggling stuff I've ever watched on a Texas Tech football field, and that says a whole lot.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Um we'll get into it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll get into football here in a bit.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Uh wanted to talk a little happier news uh to start off.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Uh Texas Tech Soccer taking down the Longhorns, one-nothing at the Walker.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: That makes it three straight victories against the Texas Longhorns and 12 straight winning seasons at home for your Lady Red Raiders.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: One of the best programs on campus, without question.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, Mr.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Stone has built that program into one of the best in the Big 12 and one of the best in the state.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited to see them like take the next step next season, you know, with a really young squad, but taking down the horns for the third time in a row, I mean, they're target number one in any sport we're in.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: So very happy to hear that.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: We beat Texas, it's a good day.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I don't care what sport it is, it doesn't matter.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: We're we're winners and we are better than UT at everything except that one sport, but we're not gonna talk about it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: It's over, it's it's over, it's dead to me.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: It's completely 100% dead to me.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but I did want to talk a little basketball because we got some uh some good news on the basketball front.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: We are ranked uh 14th in the AP preseason poll.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: This is the second year in a row where tech is ranked in the preseason poll.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Last year, I think we were 13.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: This year we're 14.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: I think it's a good ranking for for the Red Raiders.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: I I agree, man.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: And did you know this is the second time in school history that we've been preseason ranked?
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, that I mean, so I guess it was the first time ever.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh my god.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So just add on to uh the magnificence that is Chris Beard, man.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm I'm not gonna act like it's uh it was a slight before because I mean Texas Tech has always been a pedestrian at best basketball program.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: So um Chris Beard has just revolutionized this, and now I think we'd all would have been really disappointed if we were in the 20s, honestly.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's weird.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: That's weird to think about.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: But uh we probably should have been ranked in 2018, uh, the first year we made it to the Elite Eight.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: But uh, I think we were picked like seventh that year, just in the Big 12.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: I think we were finished like we were projected to be seventh, but uh obviously Chris Beard has done wonders with this program.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: We're we're preseason five in the Big 12 this year, right?
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think well, it's so it depends on where you're looking at.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Like the Big 12 came out with their preseason ranks, and we're five, but then you look at this AP poll, and we're the third Big 12 team on there.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: So I it just kind of depends.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and there is there's five Big 12 teams ranked in the top 20 of this preseason poll.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Uh Baylor coming in at number two, Kansas at six, tech at 14, West Virginia at 15, and then Texas at 19, all of which deserve to be ranked.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Um, I think everybody's pretty pop properly ranked, uh, maybe except maybe Kansas, in my opinion.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Uh Kansas is always is they're Kansas, they're always good at basketball, but they lost uh Devon Dotson and Yudoka Azabuke, who was the Big 12 player of the year last year.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be hard to make up those minutes, uh, and you know, just their their overall presence on the on the court.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, so I think they probably deserve to be a little lower, but they're Kansas, you know, they're a blue blood, so they're gonna get that name.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're gonna get ranked, you know, is what it is.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, again, they got the birds with shoes on the jersey.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's just kind of like with OU in football, they're always gonna be expected to be the very best in the Big 12.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, no, no disrespect there.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: So, it's it is what it is.
- 4:46SPEAKER_02: They're the powerhouse of the conference.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: So, it makes kind of sense, but I can agree with you.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: But uh again, I don't see Kansas, you know, be in any sort of slump this year.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, no doubt.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: And and the thing is, I these five teams that are ranked already are gonna be good this year, and I think there's other like there's other teams that are just outside of this ranking, probably, you know, teams like Oklahoma State, teams like maybe Iowa State, possibly, Oklahoma, and those teams are all gonna be, you know, good.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: There it would be Iowa State could finish third or they could finish 10th.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I really have no idea.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I do know that Baylor and Texas are pretty much returning their whole team, plus uh adding a couple more big-time recruits.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Texas adding a uh top 10 guy in Greg Brown, so uh they're gonna be better.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and West Virginia is gonna be solid.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: They returned a lot of guys, and Kansas is Kansas.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: So uh Yeah, I mean, I was listening, I was listening to Chris Beard on uh the Rost thing show.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: I'm sure you you listened to that one too, where uh he thinks Texas is the gonna be the best team in the conference this year, so with all the returning talent.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: So he says that's the one to look out for.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: But I mean, I'm sure that's the one we have circled in the locker room anyway, uh, most of the time.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: So uh hey, uh great to see the Big 12 so strong, though.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, that helps postseason chances and everything.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: So, and who doesn't want to play in the best league?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: So it's it's I think it's a good thing, not a bad thing.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: And we know that the Red Raiders are gonna be ready to play.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: So I'm not scared of it.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: I think this is a great spot for us to be in.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: If anything, I want them to sleep on us more.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh they had definitely put some respect on our name finally and uh happy to see uh where we've landed.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: So before we uh dig into like some of your player news and stuff, did you notice that any of the other teams that were gonna be playing in the uh out of conference ended up ranked?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Well, Houston did.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Uh Houston, we were and they came out with the non-conference schedule too.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Not a super strong slate for the Red Raiders.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, but we play we do play Houston uh in Fort Worth, and they came in number 17 on the preseason poll.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, the only American team to do so.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, we also play St.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: John's.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Americans usually pretty decent, but Houston, Houston always they seem to have, you know, be the top dogs in that conference the last few years.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, so that's gonna be a good I'm glad we got to retain that game.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Sucks that we can't retain like the Gonzaga game that we were gonna originally play, and you know, we were gonna have some other good games, but uh it looks like we're gonna have eight non-conference games before Big 12 play starts.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we're gonna have that LSU game in the SEC challenge, kind of right in the middle of conference play.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: But uh not like I said, not a strong slate.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Northwestern state, uh Sam Houston State.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: I swear we're always playing Northwestern State in basketball.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't know.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: Maybe I don't I don't know why you know we just always seems to pop back up, but uh I'm sorry I didn't cut uh cut you off at Sam Houston State.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, you're skates, Sam Houston skates, yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: We'll see how they do, but uh Grambling State, Abilene Christian, uh incarnate word, and AM Corpus.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: So uh, you know, not not great, uh, but the three the three games to look out for in the non-converts are are Houston, St.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: John's, and LSU.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it was pretty tricky this year, you know, during the COVID trying to figure it out.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: So I'm just glad that we got a full list of games to look forward to playing.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Like I always say, I always like whenever uh uh we're playing in-state teams.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: So even though these teams are you know pretty low level, uh, I still like seeing us uh go up against uh other in-state teams.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, and it's really cool because the first game we're playing outside of the state of Texas is not until December 22nd when we go to uh Norman.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: So that's pretty crazy uh to think about a whole month almost a whole month into the season, and we're not gonna even leave Texas, so that's cool.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, for sure.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: So I mean, and that's that's less uh travel fatigue and everything.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: So happy to hear that.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: And and just getting these non-conference games in, getting getting the team acquainted before we go and play Kansas in that first uh first conference game of the year.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's gonna be super important.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: We're gonna have to figure out some lineups.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I I couldn't even tell you who's gonna be the starting lineup, you know, go moving throughout the season.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: I have an idea a little bit, but uh guys could impress and make their way in.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's some wild cards.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Where do you put guys like Kyler Edwards?
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Do you do you have him staying in the line?
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: I'm sure Beard wants to keep him in the starting lineup, but you know, Terrence Shannon in Tabway, uh Micah Peavy even could make his way in as a as a freshman, and then you got all you know, these number of guards.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: So uh it's a good problem to have for sure, but uh definitely something we're gonna have to figure out as the season progresses.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Hey, I mean, uh, one just a quick note on the schedule is another cool thing about it being in state, is I'm sure plenty of our uh treasure listeners and fellow uh Red Raider alumni will have more chances to watch the the best basketball team, the state, baby.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Um they don't have to go too far.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Uh and so I hear you're talking about the roster.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I'm pretty sure the this this podcast missed some very important news that we've been trying to talk about for weeks.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: So can you go ahead and lay that out, homie?
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: We did.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: Uh the mackerel received his waiver to immediately play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: That is Mac McClung.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: He will be on the roster playing for the Scarlet and Black this season.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, big time news for Red Raider Nation and for the team and for everybody.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: This is just great news.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: So do we think he's an automatic starter or do you think he's more of an off-the-bench guy?
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna be a starter from day one.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think him and Burnett will probably be the two guards starting, uh, and then we'll probably do some combination of Edwards, Terrence, Shannon, Intabwe, Eat McCullough could make his way in there, and then San Osilva's gonna be starting as the big guy.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I I I would imagine Mac McClung's gonna be the starter from day one.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, but uh, you know, uh they could surprise me.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 10:36SPEAKER_02: So, you know, with with the such such weak uh competition we're going up against early.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Do you think we're gonna see some uh players that will never see the court on the Big 12 play?
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I'm sure, you know, if we're killing Northwestern State by 40, you know, and it's 10 minutes left in the game, we'll get Big Vlad in there, we'll get uh, you know, maybe even uh Clarence Nadolny will get some some solid minutes.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: Uh we'll see probably a lot of Avery Benson, I'm sure, uh early on, you know.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: Uh so it and I think I think what you take when you're playing these cupcakes is you want to get these guys experience and you want to figure out who plays together the best.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: So best lineup on the floor, best closing.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, you can't really have the best experience because you're murdering a team that's way below your talent level.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, like I said, just just figuring out who's who plays with each other the best.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: I just I just want to see everybody on the court and see what we got, is also oh, me too, me too.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm just I'm gonna be watching the games all the way through because I'm excited for the bench guys.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: I want to see those guys who not aren't necessarily gonna make you know an impact this season, but in the future seasons, you know, it it's good to see them uh and how they develop, you know.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you think about a guy like uh Norce Odiace, and you're like seeing him freshman year, we were like, This dude doesn't belong on any court, honestly.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: And then you see him from uh you know progress through the years and get to his his senior season, and you're like, This guy's awesome, this is one of my favorite red raiders of all time.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Like, so so it's cool to see the progression.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Um, see, so when looking at this roster, do you see any like potential all conference guys?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, Marcus Sanosilva was named the preseason newcomer of the year in the Big 12.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: So that's cool.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, out of everybody in the Big 12 conference, he's he's the guy they think is gonna make the most impact uh as a newcomer.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: So uh Kyler Edwards and Mac McClung were also named honorable mentions uh in the Big 12.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, I think I think a whole lot of these dudes, eight or nine guys, probably have a chance to to be on a big on an all Big 12 team, to be honest with you.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Heck yeah, it's because I mean this is this is probably the most talented team in Texas Tech history.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: And we just had we have a lot of newcomers, uh, four returners, so that's cool.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: But you know, tech's done some great things when we haven't had we've had a lot of guys leave from the previous year.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: You know, you saw with the uh the final four team, the championship team, we lost basically our entire starting lineup, and so uh we didn't have the best season last year after losing all those guys from the national title team, but uh, and I say national title team like we wanted, but uh we made it national championship team, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Championship team.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: That game still pisses me off a little bit, but I was just happy to be there.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, no doubt.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, I and anytime people ask me if I'm sad about that, I never say I'm sad about it.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: It's it's not I was just so unbelievably proud.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: It's on my list of like saddest sports moments, probably, because we came so close and just kind of you know blew it away ourselves, but um, it's not I like it, it'll never be like a top three for me because I was just so happy we were there.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: It was a miracle that that that we made it that far, and just goes to show that uh Chris Speard is is is the coach, you know.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: These these were those were not necessarily the best players in the country.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: It's just them the magic that is Chris Speard's coaching.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: You get the right guys together, you get the experienced guys, like you know, the the Matt Mooneys, the Odiace, the Tariq Owens, the guys that have been in the league and know college basketball.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: It's uh you need those guys, and I think that's why having guys like Marcus come in and uh guys like Joel and you know Kyler Edwards, who's been on the team for three years, and uh the type of experience that you return and bring in is just so vital for a college program.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: And that's why Baylor and Texas are so scary this year because they have a lot of seniors and they have a lot of guys that were are really good and have been really good.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, I guess what's really scary about playing Texas as well is it's shock is probably gonna be playing for his uh to keep his job as well.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm sure his room's a little hot and uh they probably expected way more than he's been giving.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: So uh a little nervous about that, but I do think we have the better coach and and above in the Big 12.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: So uh maybe outside of Kansas.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: So um, I mean Chris Beard might even better be better than self, you know.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: But we'll see.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm not you know, self has the longevity beard's only been at it for what four years now.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: So uh, but in turn, I mean I would put him top three.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: I'd probably put him with uh a lot of people love Baylor's coach, and I I get it.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: He's a good he's a good coach, he's been there a long time, but they haven't really made it to that step that they want to be.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: They've had a lot of good teams, but they haven't.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: This is kind of their year that they're expecting them to do great things.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, but uh you know, same with Huggins.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Huggins is such a he's he's been at West Virginia for so long, and he's uh such a tenured coach that uh it's it's hard to put Beard above him, but uh it's just my bias.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just my bias.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: You know, I think Beard's a fantastic coach, but he's he's definitely top three in my book.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So um, but you know, I think uh I think that's that's the end of the happiness for now.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Uh basketball season starts November 25th, uh this month in a couple weeks.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: So we got that to look forward to, but we should talk about the uh TCU game that happened this past Saturday.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: The Red Raiders uh taking another loss.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Uh what was it, like 34-18 or something like that?
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Just a disappointing game from your Red Raiders.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I want to start off with the injuries because the injuries get me so upset because we don't find out about them until like 30 minutes before the game from our boy Don Williams.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: We uh like no one throughout the week said anything about Eli Howard, said anything about Adrian Fry, said anything about Tony Bradford or Nick McCann missing again.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: And it's like what I want I want to be updated midweek saying that these guys aren't gonna be out or whatever.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, they may not be required to do that or whatever, but it's just frustrating to see 30 minutes before the game that you know three of your defensive linemen are gonna be out, and Adrian Fry, who's one of your better secondary guys, so uh that's just it's frustrating.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: The whole game was frustrating, dude.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, not even just that injury list.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I couldn't believe my eyes after I saw Eli Howard on the sideline there.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: And you know, he's such a a veteran lineman, so that that definitely was not fun, but neither was the game.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: No, no, it was not.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, the offense was pitiful pretty much throughout the entirety of the game, definitely in the first half.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, but you know, they kind of got some points together there at the end, but just uh our O-line stinks.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: That was the worst performance from our O line I've ever seen at tech.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: That was like our quarterbacks had oh, Columbi, I should say, had absolutely zero time to make any sort of decision.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: You know, he was he'll already running for his life as soon as uh the ball snapped.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Um, and I don't think Columbia had the best game either.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, he definitely looks like he was a little rattled back there, you know.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's I guess it's kind of tough to keep her poised whenever you're getting absolutely zero protection, um, not getting any help in that sense.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: But I mean, it's you're still the most important player on the field.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: So we kind of hope you can pull something out.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: But uh it's hard when you get sacked five times in the first quarter.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: So that that O-line was pitiful.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Everybody was pretty bad.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh, you know, usually I can say there's some bright spots, but there's just not on this O-line.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Everybody looks pretty, pretty pitiful right now.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: I just we went uh we went uh consecutive three and outs, like over and over and over and over again.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: I think the final tally was five or six, three and outs.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Um and uh you're never gonna win a game, and that's how you start.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: So that's it, it kind of luckily for us during the game, TCU's offense was struggling pretty much just as much.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, because that was the only reason why we were still in the game, because other than that, TCU was controlling the game because uh their their defense wasn't gonna make wasn't letting us move at all.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: No, and they're I mean their offense is that's that's one of the worst parts about this game is they're not very good.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: TCU is not very good.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Their defense is solid, their offense is not good.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Max Duggan can run, and that's it.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: He had like 76 passing yards this game.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, he ran for three touchdowns, but it's just they're just not they're just not good.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: And our defense, uh, they played good for the majority of the game, but there's still stupid penalties and stupid stuff that we do that makes you wonder if these guys are even fit to play football sometimes.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, in the in the fourth quarter when we're kind of close or third quarter, third or fourth quarter, whatever, second half, where we're kind of close and we're and we're making a big, you know, we just caused a fumble and we recovered it and everything, and then Zach McPherson goes and tackles the guy before the while the ball's still in uh uh Duggan's hand.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's frustrating.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Adam Beck throwing a guy five yards out of bounds down, and it's little things like that that just make you wonder if this team is if these players are ever mentally going to be ready to play in in the Big 12.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: And uh obviously TCU's offense wasn't very good, it still isn't very good, but the defense definitely did their part for the vast majority of the game.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Um, and you kind of you get you gotta kind of think do you uh do you think that mentally and and physically you get really worn out when your offense is giving you absolutely nothing to play for, you know, because uh we we we held them for they got most they got they they kind of pulled away a bit at the end in the fourth quarter, but we held them for a majority of the game, you know, they weren't able to do much for the majority of the game, so but but our offense was giving them absolutely zilch.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: So I don't know if that was just play calling or talent.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Um, that was really the issue, but because we played better teams and we've looked better, so I'm just confused as to why the offensive performance was so abysmal.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: It's a combination of both, I think.
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Um you you look at this team and you look at the players, and uh before Matt, and we could talk about Matt Wells and his decision that ultimately lost us the game, uh, in a bit, but but the play calling is not good.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: David Yost has not been good the entire really the entire season.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: Um it wasn't very good last season either.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: The screen passes uh don't work, they never work.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: They get you no yards or negative yards every single time, and he still continues to run them.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Our receivers can't block, our O-line can't block.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I get it, it's tough.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: I and that's the part that makes me think that there's a severe talent problem on this team, uh, that we just don't have the right guys.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, but then you know, the coaching mistakes kind of bring you back to that side that it's the coaching and and their fault because we do have some talented guys on this roster, but uh you know, you see the mental mistakes that these guys make.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And I can't really blame Matt Wells for a guy throwing uh the TCU running back down five yards out of bounds.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: I can't blame Matt Wells for stuff like that.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: That's just him, that's the player being bad.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: So uh Matt Wells and Co.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: We're bad this game.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Uh not so much Patterson.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: Defensively, we were fine.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: Well, defensively, we played well enough to win the game.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: It's just offense didn't give you anything.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, exactly.
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: So let's go ahead, let's go ahead and dig into that.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, obviously there's there's our fans are our are Matt Wells is not doing the best job keeping the fans.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, after this OU game that was just completely embarrassing, like it was embarrassed, it was embarrassing watching that game.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: And and then we go into and then we just go and have the worst offensive performance I've seen in a long time at tech.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: And so I'm not saying let's we're firing Matt, but do we start looking at the coordinators?
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, even special teams had a poor game as well.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Um, special teams was was brutal too.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Um I think the core, yeah, the coordinators would be first to go before Wells does.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Um guys like guys like Yost just uh he's not doing a good job at keeping keeping that job.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: I I you know the special teams guy, especially.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: That guy cannot figure it out.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: So do you do you do you kind of ride with them and to do you think firing them makes any sort of difference with commits or and with this COVID season, do you think finding a replacement gets harder, especially with budget constraints?
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: Because we're still paying, we're still paying Cliff Kingsbury as well.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um so uh do you do you look at firing these coaches or would you rather just kind of keep them and ride with it?
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: I think you ride with it for another year.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Um I don't think financially and giving a guy two years, it's just not long enough, unfortunately.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, you commit to you commit to a staff for for five years, basically, is what we committed to uh by giving him that contract.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: And then you know, at the two, three year mark, that's when you start really, really looking at what this guy can do for your program and what he can lead you to.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Um there's you know, you could look at a guy like Matt Rule, who got hired at Baylor, had a one-win season, and then the next season he won 10 games, and it's like, okay, so you know, Matt Rule's a great coach, but he just didn't have the right guys in.
- 24:24SPEAKER_01: So uh, and we've had countless injuries this year.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: This is a COVID year where we did not get a chance to prepare well for the season because practice with the facility was shut down.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: We couldn't properly practice for a long time.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Um, and Matt Wells doesn't have his guys in yet.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: He doesn't, I mean, the guys that are his are the true freshmen who have actually shown signs of light this season.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Guys like Miles Price and Taj Brooks and those type of guys, not to mention he's getting you know another four-star running back coming in, and and Barron Morton, who's uh the big quarterback commit that we got coming in next season, and that makes me want to keep Wells and keep these guys going for another year.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I understand the frustration, I really do.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: This was the first week that I really, really was was mad at Matt Wells.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: This was like the first game where I was really actually questioning the hire at this point.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Um, because you know, in year two, you want to see some improvement, and we're just not seeing it right now.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Um, we're seeing some good things on the recruiting trail.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: And I I I think no matter what, Matt Wells gets at minimum three years.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Like, I think he get I think I think the only way he doesn't get a fourth is if next year is just like this year, like just an absolute poop shoe.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Dumpster fire, yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: I I I totally get that, and I know fans are gonna be frustrated to see Matt Wells still as our head coach next season, especially if we lose to Baylor and Oklahoma State and even Kansas.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: God, if we lose to Kansas, I don't know.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know what I'm gonna do with myself.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: But um I I did want to, you know, we should bring up the big play that Matt, the big decision that Matt Wells decided to do at the end of the game to uh ultimately lose it for us.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Um second and four on the out of my memory.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: No, you gotta I gotta bring it right back to you, man.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Sorry to cut you off, but I thought I I thought I the intoxication got rid of it, but continue.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: No, I was I was so surprised at what I saw.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Second and four on the 19-yard line.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're down nine.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: There's two minutes and 47 seconds left in the game.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, you have all three all three of your timeouts left, and you decide to kick a field goal to conserve time.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Um I have never seen that in my entire life of watching football.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: I've literally never ever ever seen that.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Not to mention the team was rolling down the field.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: We just had three straight plays of seven plus yards.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, and we were on the 19-yard line, and we need a touchdown.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Why would you kill why would you I uh I don't understand successful offensive drives of the whole game, too.
- 27:10SPEAKER_02: So I I just I cannot believe that.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: And I would understand if it was fourth down, but it wasn't so um, and then Trey Wolf misses it, you know.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: And it's just you don't have all the I can't believe they went from zero trust in Trey Wolf to putting the game on his back out of nowhere for no reason either.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: You can see the frustration of all the players when they had to walk off the field and they decide to kick a field goal.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, Columbia was livid.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: He was like, What the what the hell are we doing?
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: We were we're 19 yards away.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: We need two, we need two scores, one of which needs to be a touchdown.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Why not go for it when you're 19 yards away instead of having to you know just reset the whole thing?
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: You still you still have three timeouts left.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: You have three timeouts left, and the defense, you know, they were they were kind of falling apart there at the end, but I you know, I'd still want them to have a chance.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: No matter what, you needed a touchdown.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: So I don't know what they're thinking.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: I don't, I don't know why they would put their stake in winning the game or tying the game on the last well, probably would have been the last drive.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: I I don't I don't understand the thought process there.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: I you wouldn't you want to save the field goal for that drive?
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Because then you don't because you don't have to make it to the end zone, you know, you just have to have a solid drive into their their territory.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: I my mind just I I couldn't believe my eyes.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: I seriously couldn't.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: You're 19 yards away.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: It's not like you were 30 yard, even 40 or at the midfield line.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: You were 19 yards away.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: You just had three straight plays where you gained seven yards plus.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: You had almost three minutes left.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't get it.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Well, one thing to come out of this is the the Wells and Co.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: have finally decided to bench Trey Wolf.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: They they're going with the uh his backup now.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's time.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, obviously, I don't think Trey Wolf was even ready for for what was what happened, but I mean that wasn't that wasn't very far, man.
- 29:06SPEAKER_02: So you gotta make those.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: And before half, too.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: He should have made the field goal.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's I mean, you know, that's the part of this where we're like, well, if he makes the field goal and then we eventually do get the the stops, and then but we still would have had to score a touchdown anyway.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: You know, why the decision was poor.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: The well second and four.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: You would love to be second and four.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: That's a great spot to be in.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: Like you're ninth, you're you're 20 yards away.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: And it was pitiful, and it shows weakness, I think.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Uh it was a weak decision.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: It's like I don't know.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: It's I I compare it to like the teams.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: So people in the NBA and and the MLB, they are so into analytics now, and they're into like we saw it in the world series.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: We see yeah, we saw it in the world series when the Dodgers pulled uh their pitcher who was kicking ass, and they pull him uh because of analytics, you know, because he's thrown too many pitches.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: But he, you know, I I think you keep him in a little longer, you probably win that game.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Or it wasn't the Dodgers that pulled him, it was the Rays that pulled, yeah, the Rays that pulled him.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: And they lost.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, they didn't hit wells, and that's a whole different thing.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, I just I just think you gotta you gotta score right there.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: You gotta have you gotta have your head in the game, and and he just kind of wanted a conservative approach, and I think he's had a conservative approach through a lot of the season, especially when you decide to play uh pre-vent defense against the Texas Longhorns when you have the game in the bag and not rush Sam Ellinger at all and give him all the time in the world.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: So uh another frustrating game from Matt Wells.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: Uh he's really losing the team and he's losing the fan base.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, okay, especially that call alone.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's I think that call alone, like any Wells hater is never turning back from that.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: Like, that's that's unless he goes and and wins eight games next season, like Wells haters are gonna be hating.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Well, and there and there are people that were Wells haters from the start, so I you know, those people, I'm not gonna give them credit for being ahead of the game or whatever on their Wells.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: It's easy to be against a new hire.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: You're probably right about them not working out.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, landing over on a higher is tough.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like it's like they almost were ready, they wanted him to be bad, and it's like, no, guys, that's not how you be fans, it's just a poor approach to it.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: And I've always thought this, and that's why I'm still not ready to say bye to Matt Wells.
- 31:38SPEAKER_01: I'm still not, because no, you know, say he say he wins three in a row to end this season.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, I and I don't think that's gonna happen, believe me.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna lose probably every game except Kansas, but I do too.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: You know, next season he gets some new recruits in and he gets his guys more acquainted in the system.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: You have a longer off season.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, covet's not as big a deal then.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Uh and you know, maybe maybe you pull out a pretty decent season next year, but uh, we just can't we just can't fire a guy who we gave a five-year contract after two years.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: We can't do that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: No, we we gotta write it out and see how it goes.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, because we I think we lose way more by just firing him and being even on more of a budget constraint, um, and potentially losing what's looking like a pretty solid recruiting class.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: So um, well, we all just need to hang tight.
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: You know, we've waited this long, so basketball season's right around the corner.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Basketball season is coming, y'all.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: So I'm just I'm so tired of talking about football.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: And I mean, I want to be excited about talking about football, but whenever you watch games like that, it's just exhausting, is all I can say.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: It's just you'd you're you get a headache, and especially whenever you see a play called what Matt Wells did in the end of the game, uh, where no one knew that was happening.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: That clear that clearly was not in the pregame.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: That was yeah, that was not expected.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: I think it blew everybody's mind.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: Um, but let's kind of there's a couple things before we get into Baylor.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Want to talk about um Brandon Boyer Randall was arrested.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: So that's not funny.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Has it been disclosed as to why?
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they kind of had some more information that came out today.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, apparently, uh the police were called at an IHOP uh in Lubbock because of two people in a black Cadillac making threats about shooting some employees.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: And um the police eventually were called to that IHOP and then found uh the descripted vehicle uh driving around near the location, pulled him over in a parking spot.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Um, and as the cop was coming out to confront the the individual in the car, who ended up being Brandon Boyer Randall, who was driving the car, uh, he didn't comply with police and he tried to back out of the parking spot while the cop was stopping him.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: And the and the police officer used his pushbar on the front of the car to kind of keep him from doing that, and then eventually pulled him out of the vehicle and arrested him.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and the thing about it is that in a later report, the IHOP employee that was threatened that made the call uh identified Boyer Randall as the guy who was, you know, making threats and and doing that kind of stuff.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Um, it wasn't confirmed that he had a weapon or anything.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Uh the even the employee just said that uh he he acted in movements to where it looked like he had a gun.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: And another witness said that he tried to throw out the gun at a local church, but it wasn't recovered then.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: So there's just a lot to the story.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: Uh but holy cow.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh kind of uh crazy.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Just add more craziness to the football season.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Why don't you?
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: This was the night of TCU, too, right?
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, either the night of TCU or the day after.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: I I don't I don't know when it happened.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: I just oh man, yeah, not not good.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Uh Matt Wells says they're looking into it and uh said the consequences are to be determined.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: So uh I don't know.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know, man.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Uh it's weird if if the employee identified him as the guy, I mean, I imagine something's gonna happen to him.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: So yeah, well, I mean that's that's kind of outside the realm of talking tech pod.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: So that's more legal than anything.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: So uh, I mean, hopefully it's resolved and uh hopefully everything comes out okay.
- 35:19SPEAKER_02: But that's that's a wild story, yeah.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I like initially it came out and it didn't sound like much, and uh then I read the the second report that came out today, and it's like, oh my guy, what are you doing?
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: Uh yikes, relax, get the pancakes in the morning, go home.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Like, just take it easy, take it easy, guy.
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Just go home and not threaten iHop.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: But uh second piece, like you said earlier, switch a kicker.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Uh Trey Wolf is out as the starting kicker of Texas Tech.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Jonathan Garabay is taking over.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: He's a guy from California who redshirted last year.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's been doing the kickoffs.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I've been seeing that.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I guess he's got a boomer of a leg.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, not sure how accurate it is, but uh if he's doing the kickoffs, I mean he he can kick that ball far.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: So uh I it was about time, like you said.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, one one for five on the air for Trey Wolf.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: That's just not gonna cut it.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: So you know, and I mean I don't think Trey missed the okay.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: No, I'm I want to stop myself before I say this.
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: He did miss some PAs too, right?
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, he missed he missed a couple extra points this year.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: Um one of which was not his fault, it was the holder uh that that jacked up, but um he was pretty he was actually pretty automatic on on extra points, but uh the field goals, man.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: That's part of your job.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: You need to do goals.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: You can't be one for five and and keep your job.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: And you and I you and I were like redemption where we boomed it uh before half.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: I know because it was good, it was it was right through.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: And uh I I feel like he can do good.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: I feel like he can be a good kicker.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: I just feel like it's mentally uh mentally killing him right now.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: So uh time to make that change.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Time to switch.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: At least kind of you know, do the whole bench, the starter, and the starter gets his act together, kind of thing.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I don't know.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: At this point, there's only three games left in the air.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: You probably just you probably just ride with the ride with the next guy, and maybe Trey Wolf stays on the team and wins the job again, maybe gets his head right.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but we've been talking far too long about kickers, so uh an iHop.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, an iHop.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Hey, solid pancakes, not as good as Lubbock Breakfast House, though.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: No, doesn't even doesn't even touch it, doesn't even touch it.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, why why would you go to IHOP if it if this if this is the one next to the university, why would you go to iHop and Lubbock Breakfast House is right there?
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was at this, like the incident didn't happen at the one by the by campus, but well, my statement stands, yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: For real, go go to Lubbock Breakfast House.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: It's so much or go to the pancake house seven or pancake.
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Well, that's not 24-7.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you know, whatever.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: Go to Whataburger, don't go to iHop.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: What are you doing?
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but let's get into Baylor.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Um, we're gonna be at this game.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: We're yeah, we're going to be live in Lubbock uh heading up this weekend, boys' weekend.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, gonna go up and see our red raiders, hopefully not play like garbage and uh maybe pull out a win against Baylor.
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: All right, so the good news is Baylor sucks too.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: All right, Baylor is no good.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: This is gonna be a trash football game.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: So I I don't see either team blowing each other out.
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna come down to who does more stupid stuff, which both we're very prone to doing.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: So um I, you know, uh it's a it's a uh the first time this rival is coming back to Lubbock since 2008.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of interesting.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: Um, this is how it should stay.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and like I say, it's it's gonna talk a text to be live from Lubbock, but it's gonna be one poop show of a game.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: I'm more just excited to tell the people about what it's like to be at a game during COVID.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: I'm sure a lot of people weren't able to to make a trip up to Lubbock this year, but we saw the tickets were on sale and we had a weekend off, so we were like, hey, you know what?
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: This is a fun, maybe maybe a fun year to do it, you know.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: You can tell your kids later on or uh tell your family you went during COVID or whatever.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, we'll give a review uh on the next episode then.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: So uh, but Baylor without their leading tackler and leading rusher due to injuries, so that's a good sign for the Red Raiders.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Um, Baylor's coming in at one and four on the year in their first year under uh Dave Aranda, who came from LSU, and I believe coached at tech before.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: He did, he coached uh uh during 2000 and 2002 under Mike Leach, and he also is a graduate of of Texas Tech from that time too.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, right on.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: Well, uh Dave, why don't you give us a dub?
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Why don't you help out why don't you help us out a little bit?
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Um, but Baylor Baylor's had COVID issues pretty much all year.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Uh they've had games canceled or postponed.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Uh they've had I think three games that have either been canceled or postponed, and uh so they're kind of in text boat on just not being prepared and having a lot of practice time cut short due to COVID.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: So um you know, this is this is gonna be a sloppy game, dude.
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: Without question, man.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Um shoot, I forgot what I was gonna say.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: I totally lost my train of thought.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about dinner for a second and then I got lost.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Thinking about dinner?
- 40:18unknown: Yeah, I got lost.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: What am I gonna eat?
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: I had I had something good to say, too.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: I'd rather I'd rather think about what I'm gonna eat versus thinking about this shit show of a game that's gonna take place.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: I think that's what happened.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: So um, okay, I remember what I was gonna say.
- 40:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, their one their lone win was to Kansas, and that was game one.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: It it's been a lot different since then.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: What kind of worries me is they showed some life against Iowa State, but they ended up blowing it.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and I was state didn't have the most effective game either.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Brock Purdy is so up and down, but um so uh it's gonna be a sloppy game.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: I don't know if has there even been an opening spread yet.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Um, let me see here.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: The open the opening spread is uh tech minus one and a half.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: We're favored in this game.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: When was the last time we were favored?
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: My last i i don't know.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: It's been a long time.
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised we're even favored, to be honest with you.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, all of Baylor's games, they've they've lost, they've only been by 11 points or less.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: So, you know, they played ET, they they played Iowa State, they played West Virginia, and they've they've only lost by like a touchdown or or you know, a touchdown and a field goal against those teams.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: So that's something to look out for.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Maybe they're better than what we think.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, as the season has progressed, they've had more practice time and more uh time to time to gel.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: So that's concerning.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Uh to be hopeful for is uh we perform much better at home, too.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: All all of our wins and all of our close games have been at home.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so um I'm glad I'm glad we're finally playing Baylor home and home.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: I'm glad we're finally doing this.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: I didn't like that game in Dallas.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, we've said that before on the pod.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, we got why they did it.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: It's just better to have an in-state rival come to your house every two years.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: So um I mean, you know, slop it's gonna be sloppy.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Let's hope the O-line, let's hope the O-line gets, you know, something.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: We get something from the O-line, and uh, we get these injuries done.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: I'm so freaking tired of these injuries, you know.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: Agreed, man.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: And it's if we if we win this weekend, we get to tie the all-time series too.
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: And I want a little I want a little uh uh heat coming into this game after the way last year's game went.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, we got this game.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: We got hosed last year.
- 42:39SPEAKER_02: We did, and that was one of those games where like we were really pleased with the the Mad Wells hire, you know.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: I was last whenever I was like, okay, here we are competing.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: I think Baylor was ranked at the time because they were doing they were getting so lucky and doing so well in the Big 12.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: So I want some I want to take that back.
- 42:54SPEAKER_02: We don't we do not like Baylor, who does, and um shoot, uh it's gonna be sloppy.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: So uh I like that we're favored, but I don't know if I have anything else to say other than we'll be there, and this is gonna be a disgusting game.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to be there.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: I'm expecting I'm excited to be back in Lubbock.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: We the last time we were there was last year for the TCU game where we blew that one.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: So uh I was there for work and uh you decided to join me, and uh your brother came in or buddy Clay came in.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, but we'll see.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: We're I'm I'm just excited to be back in Lubbock.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: Go go to some of the some of the old old school places and uh get the old watering holes, yeah.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: You know, just have a good time with the boys, be in the Jones.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited, but uh, I think that's it for football.
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: I think that's it for for sports.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Uh Tristan watching ball coming soon.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Basketball, basketball coming soon here in like two and a half weeks.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: Woo! We're we're winners.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: Uh song of the week.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: Go ahead, Tristan.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: All right, for my song of the week, uh, I decided to get back to my roots.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: You know, I got a little I got a little weird there for the past few weeks.
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: So um I'm going to go with a a Guy that you know, normally I don't have two guys in Tennessee, but a Nashville guy, his name is Gabe Lee.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: I'm going with his uh his single off of his newest album, Honky Tonk Hell.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: It really speaks to me because uh I I spent some time in Nashville.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Um and he's he's singing about what it's like to uh you know, like real country music and be in Nashville.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: So um that's why I love it.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: Because you know, you know me.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: I I'm a big Texas country, big alternative country guy.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: Uh the stuff coming out of big music row is not very good.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Um, in my opinion.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: How dare you?
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: How dare you speak ill will about Florida Georgia line?
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: How dare you! I drank uh many, many drinks at their bar.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm ashamed to say.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: I've drank many big drinks at all their bars, unfortunately.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: I'm ashamed to say, but um all down on Broadway in Nashville.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's a rock and roll.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: It's got a it's just a jam.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: I can never skip it anytime it comes on because it's just you just sit there yelling and and and just jamming out on some some honky tonk hell.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: So go give it a listen, y'all.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Right on, right on.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: What about you, brother?
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're gonna like my song of the week.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: My song of the week, because we're getting the boys together, because it's gonna be a yucky weekend.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: My song of the week is into the night, Santana featured Chad Kroger from Nickelback.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Freaking golden combo, golden combo.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: Who beats Carlos Santana and Chad Kroger?
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: Nobody.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: Best combo in the nation of all time.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's a it's a banger of a song, and I don't care what you say.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's better at the more you drink.
- 45:50SPEAKER_02: That's 100% sure.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: We played it at almost every tailgate that we had, almost every party that we threw.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, it always had to come on at least once.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Um, we love it.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: It's our it's our anthem.
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: It is without question, one of those.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: It's the just the opening rip.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: You're just like, oh, and you're like, oh, here we go, here we go.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: Start pounding the beers and singing in your best uh uh what's his name?
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: Who?
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: Chad Kroger?
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just sing in your best Chad voice, so you're like hoarse by the end of the song.
- 46:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a great song.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Great song.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: Go out there and listen to it and join us this weekend on a uh on what is to be a yucky weekend with the boys.

- 47:16SPEAKER_02: Um and I hope we walk out of the LBK with the dub over the freaking Baylor Bears.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: So very much so.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: We hate Baylor, we hate everybody.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: We're bad at football, but let's get better.
