- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith.
- 0:03And so today we are excited to talk about a topic that has been close to Gia's heart.
- 0:09And she really felt like it was important to discuss this topic as we've not talked
- 0:13about this topic before.
- 0:15And that is about finding a church.
- 0:19And so we know that it's really important to find your community and how to build a
- 0:23community and get plugged into a church.
- 0:26And so welcome back everybody to Fostering Faith.
- 0:28We're here to explore the ways to grow deeper in your walk with God and enjoy each other
- 0:34along the way.
- 0:35Hi, my name is Tracy.
- 0:36My name is Gia.
- 0:38And today we're going to be talking about something that is foundational to our faith
- 0:42journey.
- 0:44Finding and building a community and whether we're searching for a church or trying to
- 0:48get more family involved or wondering why community even matters.
- 0:53This episode is for you.
- 0:55And so as we can turn into scripture to set the tone, what does Hebrews 10, 24 through
- 1:0325 say Gia?
- 1:08And let us consider how we may spur one another on forward love and good deeds, not giving
- 1:23up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and
- 1:34all the more as you see the day approaching.
- 1:40We aren't meant to do life alone.
- 1:43God created us to live in community and grow and encourage each other.
- 1:47And so as we go into why faith and community is so important, spiritual growth.
- 1:54And so a church community sharpens our faith and keeps us accountable.
- 1:58Proverbs 27, 17 says that iron sharpens iron.
- 2:02So one person sharpens another.
- 2:04When we're around other people who are pursuing God, it inspires us to do the same.
- 2:11And so what about this life challenge in supporting this?
- 2:19How has church made life better for you Gia?
- 2:23It has grew me closer to God really.
- 2:29And what else has it done?
- 2:30Grew me closer to the people that I love.
- 2:36And so from celebrating joyful milestones, walking through seasons of hardship and church
- 2:41family can encourage us.
- 2:44And whenever I started with whenever we started with City Hope, can you tell the listeners
- 2:51of how and what's our walk at church been?
- 2:56We started like a lot of how many years ago?
- 3:01Six.
- 3:02And while she would just drop me off at this one place, I have no idea where I went.
- 3:07I just played with one kid first off and then I got old enough to go into like the youth
- 3:13room.
- 3:14And then this guy taught us and then my mom started youth and we went and then we moved
- 3:22to like a different church with the same church, like a bigger building.
- 3:26And then we just kept on going and going.
- 3:29And so a little bit of a backstory and so I am a nurse practitioner now, but I was a
- 3:35staff nurse at a hospital.
- 3:36And so for Gia's child years, I worked weekend option.
- 3:43And so I worked every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 3:45I did that for a decade and we I did not have the opportunity to go to church because I
- 3:54worked every weekend.
- 3:56And then as I became a nurse practitioner, I worked every weekend still and was on call
- 4:0224 seven.
- 4:03And so I spent most of my day at the hospital.
- 4:06And whenever I had an opportunity to switch jobs and was able to be off on weekends, Gia
- 4:12picked our home church, City Hope Church and was able to go start going to church.
- 4:21And as a parent, I know it's super important that you want our kids to be happy.
- 4:27And so that's where her friends were going.
- 4:30And that's why she picked City Hope Church.
- 4:32And as a mom and as a wife, I did have a husband and he has been on our podcast before and
- 4:39he mentioned that he did not go to church.
- 4:41He did not have a relationship with Christ at that point.
- 4:45He was mad at God.
- 4:47And so we went to church, I think it for two years, just by ourselves.
- 4:53And so every Sunday we would get up, we would go to church.
- 4:56Of course we would ask.
- 4:57And of course he said no.
- 4:58And so he had to walk through his journey with faith and just having a wife and a daughter
- 5:07that was just walking through their faith journey, just getting to know God and scripture.
- 5:12And so what Gia said, I would drop her off at kids.
- 5:15I would go and sit in big service by myself and I would be a back row specialist and just
- 5:24keep going.
- 5:25Really wasn't plugged in, really wasn't new small groups.
- 5:28And as my creativity, as my curiosity kind of grew, Gia was growing up.
- 5:35She was already having play dates and already having friends.
- 5:39And I was like, man, she's going to grow up and she's going to leave me and then I'm going
- 5:43to be by myself.
- 5:44So it's probably a good idea for me to get some adult friends.
- 5:49And so I joined a small group and just to reach out, to have adult conversations that
- 5:56weren't about work.
- 5:59And it just kind of spurred more faith because if you surround yourself with people that
- 6:04are trying to seek God's face and trying to be inquisitive and don't know everything and
- 6:11you're just walking through kind of life together, it really was just a week by week kind of
- 6:19thing and just trying to grow.
- 6:21And here we are leading the junior high now and we serve every weekend, have for the last
- 6:31several years and just really have become part of the church family.
- 6:38And so purposeful living.
- 6:39And so serving in church gives us opportunities to use our God given gifts.
- 6:45And so what is first Peter for 10 say Gia?
- 6:51Each of you should should use whatever gift you have reached to serve others.
- 7:01As faithful stewards in God's grace.
- 7:04And so finding a church, how can you start with a church if you don't know where to go?
- 7:10If you don't have a kid to blame it on where you guys don't have friends, you guys just
- 7:13move into town.
- 7:15We can start with prayer.
- 7:16And so James one five says, if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God who gives
- 7:22us generously to all without finding fault and will be given to you.
- 7:27And so asking God to guide you to the right church for your family and trust that he knows
- 7:32exactly where you need to be.
- 7:34And so, I mean, people you hear even moved across the country to go to the church that
- 7:40God has called them to do.
- 7:41And so with any decisions, we always want to ask God whether it's going to high school.
- 7:47Do we pray about what high school we go to?
- 7:50Do we pray about what college or what career you're going to go to?
- 7:54Yes.
- 7:57And so we pray for everything.
- 7:58And so it's not silly.
- 7:59I mean, can you just walk randomly walk into a church?
- 8:02Yes, absolutely.
- 8:03If you have no churches in your local area that you feel comfortable with, you know,
- 8:08making sure that it's a Bible based church, making sure that you feel comfortable whenever
- 8:13you walk in.
- 8:15And so biblical teaching.
- 8:17And so looking for key elements in your church is making sure that it's Bible based.
- 8:21And so we are Christians.
- 8:23We do go by the Holy Bible.
- 8:25And so does your church preach the word God faithfully?
- 8:29And so Acts 2 42 says they devote themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship.
- 8:35This should always be a cornerstone of the church that you go to and that Christ centered
- 8:39worship.
- 8:40Worship should glorify God and lead you into his presence.
- 8:45What do you think about our worship at City Hope?
- 8:48I really like it.
- 8:50Why?
- 8:51It's really hype.
- 8:52And like, I just like the singers.
- 8:57And the presence of God is so present in that room and the altar is open and just people
- 9:04just surrendering their lives to God.
- 9:07And you can just feel the Holy Spirit just move through our auditorium and making sure
- 9:16that your church focuses on community.
- 9:21A church should feel welcoming, actively seeking connection with members, small groups, service
- 9:27projects, and other ministry having opportunities to serve.
- 9:32And so are you are there ways for you and your family to get involved with that church
- 9:38thrives with members participation?
- 9:41And so looking at those key elements about does your church serve itself or does it
- 9:48serve the community?
- 9:50And so is City Hope known for helping the community?
- 9:52Yes.
- 9:53And so what outreach have we done in the community?
- 9:58Serving food.
- 10:01Serving food.
- 10:02And like giving clothes out and everything.
- 10:06We did a youth project.
- 10:08And what we do there?
- 10:10We help people bag groceries or like take it out to their car.
- 10:15But it didn't work a lot.
- 10:17And so as youth for a serve day, we had the kids go out to the local grocery stores to
- 10:24help people carry out their groceries.
- 10:26And the kids were really set apart from what they experienced.
- 10:33What do you experience?
- 10:36People saying no and just not letting us help them really.
- 10:41And so just having that sense of like people are like, okay, how much is this going to
- 10:45cost me?
- 10:47And then they kind of realize that we were from City Hope and they're like, oh, you're
- 10:51a City Hoper.
- 10:53And so the community really does know our church for community based projects.
- 10:59We are equipped to have a few distribution that's associated with us.
- 11:06We have a clothing facility that we are able to, I think we distributed like 20,000 pieces
- 11:13of clothing last year.
- 11:15We are always seeking ways.
- 11:17We have huge serve days that we go out into the community where we are doing projects
- 11:25for people that can't have upkeep with their homes or their yards, doing beds for kids,
- 11:31redoing.
- 11:32What was that one project that we did a couple of years ago that you got to be part of?
- 11:36We got like, did we go clean out rooms?
- 11:41Yeah, so tell the listeners what that was like.
- 11:45We got a shop for this one boy's room and like we cleaned it out and like we got rid
- 11:51of all the stuff he didn't need and like what he wanted and what he didn't want.
- 11:55And we just reorganized his room, like blessed him with like a lot of stuff that we bought
- 12:00him.
- 12:01And we're able to do that for another girl and we were able to give them a bedroom.
- 12:07She hadn't had a bed and so we were able to provide beds and able to just decorate their
- 12:13room and just love on the community where they were at.
- 12:18And so, you know, visiting a church and having an open heart, you know, attending a church
- 12:22services just to observe, does a church make you feel welcome?
- 12:27Are there people friendly?
- 12:29What's the atmosphere like for kids and teens and adults?
- 12:33And make sure that you ask questions, introduce yourself to the leaders, take notes on how
- 12:37to engage with newcomers.
- 12:39Are they asking?
- 12:40And so I know for our church, they are very inquisitive about you.
- 12:44They want to connect.
- 12:45And a lot of people are hesitant about that connection card, making sure that you are
- 12:49reaching out to the leaders of the church.
- 12:51If you have questions, if you have concerns, don't complain if no one's reached out.
- 12:55If you've not reached out, they can't know.
- 12:58They can't know you.
- 13:00And so we have a thing at our church is called Know Your Row.
- 13:03And then do you know what Know Your Row is to you?
- 13:07Yeah.
- 13:08What is it?
- 13:09It's where like you know your row.
- 13:12It's like literally the name and like you get to know the people in a row and like if
- 13:16they're not there and like they're not there another week, you like tell the leader and
- 13:21like they text them to make sure if they're OK.
- 13:24Yeah, exactly.
- 13:25And so, you know, making sure that you know the community that you're going with.
- 13:28And so you may not know everyone's name, but you know, hey, the lady that always raise
- 13:32her hands like she's not there.
- 13:33And so telling your leader like, hey, so and so we have not seen him for the couple of
- 13:39weeks, because if you have a church of two to three hundred, five hundred people, four
- 13:43leaders of the church literally can't know everybody.
- 13:48And so it's about you because the person that is sitting in the chair that is sitting in
- 13:52the pew, we are the church.
- 13:54We are just going to a building.
- 13:56And so it's about knowing your row, taking accountability.
- 14:00And so is the leadership interested in getting to know you?
- 14:03Do they have a next step station?
- 14:04Do they have swag for people?
- 14:07And so a lot of churches have, you know, gifts to give to people.
- 14:13And so consider what your family needs.
- 14:15And so what should kids look for in church?
- 14:17Do you have a good youth space?
- 14:20I feel like is a big one and the youth leader and the atmosphere really.
- 14:26OK, is what's one thing that you think is important for the for the youth section?
- 14:32Like the youth room, like the people all of it.
- 14:37You don't really need a big youth room.
- 14:39I just feel like you just need a good teacher and like a lot of people that you know.
- 14:44And it'll just be fun.
- 14:45How many rooms have we outgrown?
- 14:47Three.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:49Two.
- 14:50Remember that very first room that we had?
- 14:53It was so small.
- 14:55And by God's blessings, we were just able to keep growing and to keep growing.
- 15:00And now we have a whole youth department and we have our own auditorium and we just keep
- 15:07growing by God's blessings.
- 15:09And we're just looking for that.
- 15:11And so look for what your family needs.
- 15:12You know, do they have a kid section?
- 15:14Do they have a youth section?
- 15:16And you know, what do they have for adults?
- 15:18You know, small groups, Bible studies, discipleship, the stages of life that you're in.
- 15:24And so really trying to see what they have to offer you.
- 15:29And so how do you get plugged in?
- 15:31And so that can be very overwhelming for people.
- 15:34And so start small.
- 15:35Once you find a church, don't rush into everything all at once because you will get burned out.
- 15:40You will get overwhelmed and it takes time to attend regularly to get to know the people.
- 15:47What does Proverbs 16 and 3 say to you?
- 15:50Say to the Lord whatever you do and he will establish your plans.
- 15:57And so whenever you want to start with a church, start small and just start just attending
- 16:05regular, you know, have your time with God.
- 16:08But I mean, so they could be having like five different, you know, planning ceremonies going
- 16:14on or something and join a group and join this and do do do.
- 16:17Don't do it.
- 16:19Start small.
- 16:20Once you find your niche and as you're praying to God and don't over schedule yourself, ask
- 16:26him what he wants you to do and he will let you know.
- 16:31And as we go into January, February, March, small group season is going to be starting.
- 16:37And so small groups is a great way to build deeper relationships.
- 16:42These are spaces where you pray and you share together.
- 16:45And we've talked about that on other podcasts.
- 16:48And so for teens and adults, check out your groups and your Bible clubs.
- 16:53These environments help people connect with peers and to share your faith.
- 16:57Do you feel like youth has a good small group?
- 17:03Yes, I feel like they do because we know each other like well enough now where we have like
- 17:08each other's phone numbers and everything and like we can take some of everything.
- 17:14What would be something encouraging that you could say to youth to get them to should they
- 17:18be scared about youth?
- 17:20No, because probably most likely every youth member has gone through the same thing that
- 17:25you have.
- 17:27And is is what you talk about in youth confidential?
- 17:31Yes.
- 17:32And so what's that mean?
- 17:35Like if someone like says something about their like home life, you're not supposed to be
- 17:39talking about it like to your friends at school because that's just not fair to the other
- 17:44person if you start talking about them.
- 17:49Is there anything else that you could that you could tell someone that's like kind of
- 17:52on the fence like, oh, that topic sounds really cool, but I don't know anything about the
- 17:56Bible.
- 17:57Do you have to know stuff about it?
- 18:00No, you don't have to know stuff about it.
- 18:03And even just for adults.
- 18:04And so just like whenever I said I was like, you know, G is actually going to leave me
- 18:08one day and I'm not going to have any like girlfriend.
- 18:12And as you go back into listen to our other podcasts, we this how I met my best friend
- 18:18was through a small group.
- 18:20And it's just like our lives completely meshed together.
- 18:24And our husbands love each other.
- 18:26Our kids love each other.
- 18:28We are really just a blonde and new brunette that really just have meshed well.
- 18:35And her family has just kind of just became one of us and we became one of them.
- 18:42And so just making sure that you're seeking the Lord, you're seeking good friendships
- 18:47and that you guys are both both going in that kind of same direction, just seeking God and
- 18:51so volunteering and serving.
- 18:52So ask whether church needs help serving not only blesses others, but it helps people feel
- 18:59connected.
- 19:00And so, um, what, where do we serve at Gia?
- 19:15The church.
- 19:16What do we do?
- 19:17Do we serve?
- 19:18What do we do?
- 19:19Do we volunteer?
- 19:20We volunteer for everything.
- 19:25Does that bother you?
- 19:29And be honest.
- 19:30Yes.
- 19:31Okay.
- 19:32Um, and so why does that bother you?
- 19:35Because we have so much stuff to do on the weekends.
- 19:37It just keeps on adding on to what we need to do.
- 19:42And what do you need to do?
- 19:43I have sports and everything like that during the weekends now and I have friends over and
- 19:49now we have to wake up early and everything.
- 19:54And so that is the real raw, um, of trying to disciple, um, your child into wanting to
- 20:05serve.
- 20:06Sometimes, um, I make her serve.
- 20:08I mean, it's not about her heart posture is not right.
- 20:11And so we get to serve at a food pantry or distribute, distribute clothes or, um, to
- 20:19go shop, um, for our homeless or unsheltered population and to put foods in the food bins.
- 20:25Um, we have, we got to serve for, um, the Christmas dinners and to deliver meals.
- 20:31Um, and so just, I know parents can be super frustrated with their daughters and their
- 20:38sons about not wanting to, but if we teach a child the way that they're supposed to go,
- 20:45they will see and they will reap the rewards of how their heart is as turning.
- 20:53And so you had talked about too, about building that relationship.
- 20:56What does Proverbs 17, seven say to you?
- 20:59A friend loves at all times and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
- 21:08And so stepping out of your comfort zone and introducing yourself to others and inviting
- 21:12someone for coffee or a meal, uh, making that connection and effort is, is totally just
- 21:19worth it.
- 21:20And so we want to stay committed to a church church won't be perfect because people are
- 21:26not perfect.
- 21:27Churches are for the broken.
- 21:30And so, so many times I hear, I'm not going to that church.
- 21:33I knew what they did on Saturday.
- 21:35Please know we are all sinners.
- 21:38We are all broken.
- 21:39We are all messes.
- 21:40If the church was for perfect people, it would be empty.
- 21:43And so we are there to learn to be like Jesus.
- 21:47And that is it.
- 21:48And so for the people that think that they're perfect, no, church is not for you.
- 21:52Church is for people that are broken, that don't have everything together and they need
- 21:56a Lord and savior to help them walk through life.
- 22:02Bottom line.
- 22:03So we hope that this message, um, encourages you parents and adults that are struggling
- 22:10with, um, just trying to find and what to do, um, with life.
- 22:14And so help your kids understand the value of church early on.
- 22:19Proverbs 22 six says, start children off the way that they should go.
- 22:22And even when they are old, they will not turn from it.
- 22:25And so just, that's what I was saying about making Gia get up and volunteer because I
- 22:29have to train her to have a servant heart because if I don't do it, society is going
- 22:36to do it and she, they may teach her wrong.
- 22:38And so just surrounding her with, um, scripture and knowing the right thing to do whenever
- 22:44you don't want to do the right thing.
- 22:46Sometimes you just have to do it and making church attendance a priority.
- 22:50And so it's skipping church on Sunday, an option.
- 22:55No.
- 22:56And so making church attendance a priority.
- 22:58And so talking about what they learned afterwards, engaging with your kid after they get out
- 23:03of Sunday school.
- 23:04So what did you learn?
- 23:05And so that even just talking about after they learned that lesson is going to just
- 23:09kind of reiterate how important it is and give yourself grace.
- 23:13Finding a community takes time.
- 23:14And so if you find that first church app, you know, like, I'm not going to church.
- 23:18I knew it was going to be like this.
- 23:19Absolutely not.
- 23:20You keep praying, keep showing up and trusting God is going to work into relationships.
- 23:25And remember that you're not just joining a church, you're becoming part of the body
- 23:31of Christ.
- 23:32And that is where every person matters.
- 23:36And so as we kind of wrap up this, this episode, I know it was pretty long, but church community
- 23:43is so important.
- 23:44And so, you know, pray for guidance, look for that Christ centered church and start
- 23:49small, get involved and stay committed.
- 23:52And so first Corinthians 12, 27 says, now you are the body of Christ and each one of
- 24:03you is part of it.
- 24:05And so whenever you are part of this journey, remember that God has a place for you and
- 24:09your family.
- 24:10Take the first steps and trust him with the rest.
- 24:14And so we want this week, you're not, if you're not plugged into a church, pray and research
- 24:20just a few churches in your area.
- 24:21And if you are already part of one, find one a way to connect deeper through the ministry
- 24:30connection cards.
- 24:32If you want to, you can turn into City Hope Church in Southern Illinois.
- 24:37If you need an e-learning church, we invite you always to church.
- 24:41We start at 10 o'clock.
- 24:43You are welcome.
- 24:44You can always sit by my husband if you need to.
- 24:47And so we want to do in this podcast in prayer, do you want to pray?
- 24:53Sure.
- 24:54Dear God, thank you for everything.
- 24:57I pray for the listeners that they just find a church and that they grow and they have
- 25:03a good church family.
- 25:06And I pray for the sick and hurt and they'll feel better.
- 25:09Amen.
- 25:10Amen.
