Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Is YouTube telling the truth about views

- 0:00Speaker 1: So I ran into my old pal Aragor and son
- 0:02Speaker 1: of Arethoin, and he says to me, riders of Roehan,
- 0:06Speaker 1: what news from the mock, to which I replied, Buddy,
- 0:09Speaker 1: I don't know what you're talking about, but I can
- 0:12Speaker 1: tell you the dech News YouTube has finally addressed concerns
- 0:16Speaker 1: over view counts raised by a good number of creators
- 0:19Speaker 1: in recent weeks, including Red Letter Media, Second Win, and
- 0:23Speaker 1: even awkward teenager with a full beard Linus Tectips of Bastion.
- 0:26Speaker 1: YouTube's response, as delivered in a support article published this morning,
- 0:31Speaker 1: essentially boils down to skill issue. It's all on your head,
- 0:36Speaker 1: get good plub. The article first addresses the idea that
- 0:43Speaker 1: the reason view counts suddenly dropped in mid August was
- 0:46Speaker 1: due to YouTube rolling out age verification. This is a
- 0:49Speaker 1: hypothesis that Red Letter Media talked about in their video,
- 0:52Speaker 1: but they referred to accounts that had been age restricted
- 0:55Speaker 1: as having restricted mode automatically turned on, which I guess
- 0:59Speaker 1: led YouTube to spend this whole section clarifying that restricted
- 1:04Speaker 1: mode can only be manually turned on. It's a separate
- 1:07Speaker 1: thing that has absolutely nothing to do with what they
- 1:10Speaker 1: call age restricted content. Restricted mode restricts the viewing of
- 1:16Speaker 1: videos based on whether they're appropriate for kids, but that
- 1:19Speaker 1: doesn't mean that the videos blocked by restricted mode are
- 1:22Speaker 1: classified as age restricted content. Doesn't make sense. Yeah, this
- 1:28Speaker 1: part of the response was super helpful and not addressing
- 1:31Speaker 1: the question of whether the age verification rollout, which happened
- 1:35Speaker 1: on August thirteenth, has anything to do with the massive
- 1:38Speaker 1: views drop reported by creators around the same time. So
- 1:41Speaker 1: thanks for that YouTube. The other major hypothesis going around
- 1:45Speaker 1: is that YouTube has stopped counting views from devices using
- 1:48Speaker 1: an ad blocker, or they've changed the way they count
- 1:51Speaker 1: views in some way. But YouTube says, you fool, We've
- 1:56Speaker 1: done no such thing. There is no systemic issue that
- 2:00Speaker 1: is impacting creators. Okay, but there's just one problem, as
- 2:07Speaker 1: pointed out by Linus and one of lmg's best boys,
- 2:10Speaker 1: Dan Besser on The Wan Show. While views have dropped,
- 2:14Speaker 1: the ratio of likes to dislikes has shot up, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: the revenue per video is about the same despite lower views,
- 2:20Speaker 1: which would be consistent with ad block views not counting anymore,
- 2:24Speaker 1: as YouTube creators only get revenue if the viewer seas
- 2:27Speaker 1: an ad That's just how it works. Then there's this
- 2:30Speaker 1: little detail spotted by Josh Streif Hayes. It's views from
- 2:34Speaker 1: computer users specifically that have dropped, you know, the device
- 2:38Speaker 1: on which it's easiest to install an AD blocker. And
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know what. You may have noticed our views have
- 2:44Speaker 1: also been down since mid August. So let's take a
- 2:46Speaker 1: look at our views from mobile. It looks mostly fine.
- 2:49Speaker 1: TV Yeah, seems normal computer whall. Okay, but YouTube's probably right.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We're just a victim of on platform competition. You know,
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's just hard for me to grasp that because we're
- 3:02Speaker 1: the only tech news channel on YouTube. I checked. Eden,
- 3:04Speaker 1: a Nintendo switch emulator, has launched on the Google play Store.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It's not the first switch emulator on the playstore. The
- 3:12Speaker 1: infamous Uzu emulator was also available on the platform before
- 3:16Speaker 1: being thoroughly destroyed by Nintendo's legal team. Eden is a
- 3:20Speaker 1: fork of Yuzoo, apparently built by a team of masochistic developers.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Its brazen release onto the Playstore has fans excited, but
- 3:28Speaker 1: also probably wincing a little bit as they wait for
- 3:32Speaker 1: a legal orbital strike from the Mushroom Kingdom. According to
- 3:35Speaker 1: Eden's playstore page, the emulator focuses on high performance without
- 3:39Speaker 1: compromising esthetics, compatibility, or stability, and that concentration on performance
- 3:45Speaker 1: is one of the more attractive points about switch emulators
- 3:48Speaker 1: in general, because Nintendo hardware, first party hardware, is rarely
- 3:52Speaker 1: the best place to actually play Nintendo games. For example,
- 3:56Speaker 1: just this weekend, Digital Foundry released a video about how
- 3:58Speaker 1: the switch to CPU U holds back the performance of
- 4:01Speaker 1: games that use Unreal Engine five. With a nearly constant
- 4:05Speaker 1: stream of new Android powered handhelds, the timing of Eden's
- 4:09Speaker 1: release seems great, but we'll just have to see how
- 4:12Speaker 1: long they can dodge the wrath of Nintendo. Good luck, Eden,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and I'm sorry for bringing attention to you. Invidia is
- 4:18Speaker 1: being accused of violating anti monopoly laws by a Chinese
- 4:22Speaker 1: regulatory body. These enormous corporations just cannot catch a break.
- 4:27Speaker 1: China launched the investigation into Nvidia's business practices back in
- 4:30Speaker 1: December twenty twenty four over in Vidia's potential failure to
- 4:34Speaker 1: comply with government provisions in its acquisition of US Israeli
- 4:39Speaker 1: chip designer Melanox Technologies back in twenty twenty The specifics
- 4:42Speaker 1: of Nvidia's breach of those provisions are still vague, but
- 4:46Speaker 1: the timing of this whole scenario makes a lot of sense.
- 4:49Speaker 1: The investigation into Nvidia started only a week after the
- 4:52Speaker 1: US announced tougher export controls on certain chips and chip
- 4:55Speaker 1: making equipment going into China, and now the Chinese regulator's
- 4:59Speaker 1: accusation of monopolistic behavior from Nvidia comes just as US
- 5:03Speaker 1: and Chinese officials meet in Madrid for trade talks. So
- 5:07Speaker 1: maybe in Nvidia is as bad as China is making
- 5:10Speaker 1: them out to be. Or maybe this is all just
- 5:12Speaker 1: part of a political game between two global superpowers. Or
- 5:17Speaker 1: you know, two things can be true at the same time,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and no one knows that better than our sponsor, ground News.
- 5:23Speaker 1: They want to help you break free from toxic algorithms
- 5:26Speaker 1: and actually understand just what the heck is going on
- 5:28Speaker 1: out there, which is why the Nobel Peace Center recognized
- 5:31Speaker 1: ground News as an excellent way to stay informed and
- 5:34Speaker 1: avoid echo chambers. But how well they collect and compare
- 5:38Speaker 1: tons of articles covering the same story and analyze how
- 5:41Speaker 1: it's being covered across the political spectrum. Take this recent
- 5:44Speaker 1: story about how the education system is being forced to
- 5:47Speaker 1: adapt to AI. Right leaning outlets represent only seven percent
- 5:51Speaker 1: of the coverage here, while left leaning outlets count for
- 5:54Speaker 1: twenty six percent. Why is that the case when it
- 5:57Speaker 1: seems like the left hates Ai and the right loves it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: That's a great question you can dive into with ground
- 6:02Speaker 1: news bias, comparison tool bias. It's like a brain. Everyone's
- 6:07Speaker 1: got one, even if it doesn't seem like it. Sometimes, Hey,
- 6:10Speaker 1: get the transparency and understanding you deserve from the news
- 6:13Speaker 1: and save forty percent on ground news vantage plan by
- 6:16Speaker 1: using our link in the description. So my other buddy Gandelf,
- 6:18Speaker 1: who was a white wizard at this point, good for him,
- 6:21Speaker 1: told his steed shutter facts shut at the meaning of haste.
- 6:26Speaker 1: But I said, old Jois's friend, these quick bits will do.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Just just find TikTok might be sticking around in the
- 6:33Speaker 1: US after all. While in Madrid for the US's trade
- 6:37Speaker 1: talks with China, US Trade Secretary Scott Bessen told reporters
- 6:41Speaker 1: that the two countries have reached a framework on a
- 6:44Speaker 1: deal to switch TikTok from the hands of Byte Dance
- 6:47Speaker 1: into US controlled ownership, and one key to the deal
- 6:50Speaker 1: succeeding was the fact that China is interested in Chinese
- 6:54Speaker 1: characteristics of the app, but the US doesn't care about
- 6:58Speaker 1: Chinese Characteristics has been given until September seventeenth to make
- 7:02Speaker 1: a deal or they risk being banned from the US,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but this date has already been pushed back before and
- 7:08Speaker 1: probably will be again. The perpetual doom scroll continues. Speaking
- 7:11Speaker 1: of which, Qualcom has announced its next flagship processor, the
- 7:15Speaker 1: Snapdragon Elite eight Gen five, a doozy of a name
- 7:19Speaker 1: that kicked off a conversation about whether Qualcom had maybe
- 7:22Speaker 1: had one too many drinks and skipped a few generations
- 7:25Speaker 1: of chips. That's because Qualcomm's preceding chip was called the
- 7:29Speaker 1: Snapdragon eight Elite no gens two to two four. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: guess the name caused enough confusion that Qualcomm felt the
- 7:36Speaker 1: need to explain themselves in a blog post, writing, Snapdragon
- 7:39Speaker 1: eight Elite Gen five marks the fifth generation of our
- 7:42Speaker 1: premium eight series platform, since we introduced our new single
- 7:46Speaker 1: digit naming and adding Gen five isn't just a number,
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's a signal that this platform leads the family forward.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And why is it called elite again? Because it is
- 7:57Speaker 1: elite awesome? Just checking. Thank you. Google has had a
- 8:00Speaker 1: lawsuit brought against it by Penske Media Corporation or PMC
- 8:04Speaker 1: to its friends, the publisher of Rolling Stone, Variety, Billboard,
- 8:08Speaker 1: the Hollywood Reporter, and they're also an investor in Box Media,
- 8:12Speaker 1: all my aunt's, uncles and parents' favorites. Pmc's complaint claims
- 8:16Speaker 1: that Google's AI overviews give someone no reason to actually
- 8:20Speaker 1: click on the source of the information that the AI
- 8:23Speaker 1: just summarized, and that results in a loss of traffic
- 8:26Speaker 1: for pmc's sites. We've talked about this before in the Channel.
- 8:30Speaker 1: In a statement, pmc's CEO J Penske said that PMC
- 8:34Speaker 1: will proactively fight for the future of digital media and
- 8:37Speaker 1: preserve its integrity, all of which is threatened by Google's
- 8:40Speaker 1: current actions. And while I don't watch a lot of
- 8:42Speaker 1: combat sports, I am here for inter corporate juggernaut brawls.
- 8:47Speaker 1: And TSMC is buzzing about their newest announcement. Uh is
- 8:51Speaker 1: that a pun? Maybe the company, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer,
- 8:56Speaker 1: is getting into the honey business, not the extension and Nope.
- 9:02Speaker 1: As Tom's Hardware states, TSMC has worked with local beekeepers
- 9:06Speaker 1: in Taiwan to produce GM TSMC branded honey. Okay, the
- 9:13Speaker 1: Taiwanese business isn't just getting into the venture for the
- 9:16Speaker 1: honey money. Though these beekeeping efforts are to show off
- 9:19Speaker 1: that TSMC is environmentally responsible and their operations don't affect
- 9:24Speaker 1: the natural ecosystems around their facilities like at all an
- 9:28Speaker 1: uplifting story, But when that makes me hungry, so I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: gonna go. If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and don't forget to come back on Wednesday for more
- 9:36Speaker 1: tech news. In the meantime, I'm going back to having
- 9:39Speaker 1: one sided conversations with my TV while I rewatch Lord
- 9:42Speaker 1: of the Rings. Bye bye now
