- 0:12Speaker 1: Samuel 19.18 Dear Heavenly Father, As I ponder on the
- 0:18Speaker 1: truths of today's reading in 1 Samuel 19, I will
- 0:23Speaker 1: focus my attention on the fact that you constantly provided
- 0:27Speaker 1: inside intel to guide and protect David. In the same manner,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I boldly request the same intel to guide and lead
- 0:37Speaker 1: me as I walk through new doors and opportunities of uncertainty.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Place the Jonathans in my life who will alert me
- 0:45Speaker 1: of harmful plans and people whose main purpose is to
- 0:49Speaker 1: dismantle my family, my business, my schooling, my ministry, my finances,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and all relationships I have. Thank you for making a
- 0:59Speaker 1: way out of no way, even when it seems like
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'm retreating. Help me to realize that I am actually
- 1:06Speaker 1: running to my next place to experience another miracle. Nobody's
- 1:11Speaker 1: plans against me are more powerful than your presence. That
- 1:16Speaker 1: is why I will clothe myself with your word and
- 1:20Speaker 1: your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
- 1:29Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by
- 1:32Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible story. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:46Speaker 2: David is protected. In our last story, we learned how
- 1:50Speaker 2: the favor of the Lord was upon David in everything
- 1:53Speaker 2: he did. Every battle David led ended in victory. which
- 1:58Speaker 2: made Saul's blood boil with jealousy. David developed a deep
- 2:03Speaker 2: bond with Jonathan and married Saul's daughter. In this story,
- 2:07Speaker 2: we will learn about Saul's jealousy spilling over onto David
- 2:11Speaker 2: as he attempts to kill him a second time, inspired
- 2:14Speaker 2: by the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Hello, Jack Graham here with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:21Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. In the last episode, we see
- 2:24Speaker 3: how God gave David victory after victory in every battle
- 2:28Speaker 3: that he fought. God's favor was upon this man. Saul
- 2:33Speaker 3: grew increasingly jealous, envious of David, and then bitter for
- 2:37Speaker 3: his impending loss of the throne. Saul attempted to take
- 2:40Speaker 3: David out to kill him, but he was always unsuccessful.
- 2:44Speaker 3: And even when David married Saul's daughter, Michael, Saul did
- 2:47Speaker 3: not relent in his plans against David. Today, we will
- 2:51Speaker 3: see once again how Saul tries to take David's life,
- 2:55Speaker 3: and how God protected him. So let's listen to God's
- 2:59Speaker 3: word today.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Crickets chirped outside the palace doors. A cool breeze slithered
- 3:06Speaker 2: through the windows and swayed the curtains of David's bedroom.
- 3:10Speaker 2: David slept soundly beside his wife in the quiet of
- 3:13Speaker 2: the night. On the other side of the palace, whispers
- 3:16Speaker 2: could be heard from closed doors. Saul's face was illuminated
- 3:21Speaker 2: by a few flickering candles.
- 3:23Speaker 3: There!
- 3:24Speaker 2: In front of Jonathan and all his servants, Saul conspired
- 3:27Speaker 2: to kill David. Saul paced the room, ranting quietly about
- 3:32Speaker 2: David's growing popularity. The servants nodded in agreement, but Jonathan
- 3:37Speaker 2: remained quiet in the corner with his arms folded. Saul
- 3:41Speaker 2: rambled on in paranoia until he eventually grew tired and
- 3:45Speaker 2: went to bed. When the servants departed to their own quarters,
- 3:49Speaker 2: Jonathan snuck into David's bedroom. Gently and quietly he woke
- 3:53Speaker 2: David up to tell him what his father had been saying.
- 3:57Speaker 2: He wants you dead, Jonathan whispered. Be on your guard
- 4:01Speaker 2: when the morning comes. Hide in secret while I gather
- 4:04Speaker 2: more information from my father. Perhaps I can convince him otherwise,
- 4:09Speaker 2: David nodded, and Jonathan left his room. David and his
- 4:12Speaker 2: wife stayed up and waiting, praying that Jonathan would find
- 4:16Speaker 2: favor with Saul. The morning broke, and Jonathan and Saul
- 4:20Speaker 2: were gathered for breakfast. Jonathan looked up at his father,
- 4:23Speaker 2: waiting for the right moment to speak about David. When
- 4:27Speaker 2: the time was right, he opened his mouth and said,
- 4:30Speaker 2: Why would you sin against David, when he has brought
- 4:33Speaker 2: you nothing but fortune? Saul perked up. Jonathan, already in
- 4:38Speaker 2: too deep with his words, decided to continue, saying, He
- 4:42Speaker 2: risked his life with that giant, and Israel was saved.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You saw it with your own eyes and rejoiced. Why
- 4:49Speaker 2: then would you murder him without cause? Saul sat there silent.
- 4:55Speaker 2: His heart ached. There was a war going on in
- 4:57Speaker 2: Saul's heart. A clashing of good and evil raged in
- 5:01Speaker 2: the depths of his mind. What his son said was true.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Saul did not truly want to harm David. His jealousy
- 5:09Speaker 2: was misplaced, for David had done nothing but serve Saul
- 5:13Speaker 2: faithfully as his own son. Saul suddenly felt a small
- 5:17Speaker 2: burst of clarity and said,' As the Lord lives, I
- 5:21Speaker 2: shall not harm David.' Saul grinned ear to ear, and
- 5:25Speaker 2: Jonathan let out a sigh of relief. He called for David,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and the three of them fellowshiped as they once did.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Together they strategized, ate, and enjoyed David's music. All was well,
- 5:38Speaker 2: at least for a moment. War once again knocked on
- 5:42Speaker 2: Israel's doors. The Philistines marched with great passion up against
- 5:46Speaker 2: the armies of Israel. David laced up his armor and
- 5:49Speaker 2: sharpened his sword. With his men behind him, David swooped
- 5:53Speaker 2: into battle like an eagle against its prey. The Philistines
- 5:57Speaker 2: feared David's sword and fled at the sight of him.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Israel struck them with a great blow that day, and
- 6:04Speaker 2: the people once again rejoiced over David's bravery. Saul could
- 6:08Speaker 2: hear the cheering. The laughter and music awoke a slumbering
- 6:12Speaker 2: hatred in Saul's heart. David entered into his courts and
- 6:16Speaker 2: began to play the lyre again for Saul. As he
- 6:19Speaker 2: strummed for his king, David could hear the slight shift
- 6:23Speaker 2: in Saul's spear. David looked up as Saul hurried the
- 6:27Speaker 2: spear towards his chest. David leapt to his left and
- 6:30Speaker 2: crashed into the table. Saul stood ready to mount another attack,
- 6:35Speaker 2: but David escaped through the window and fled Saul's presence.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Saul sent his men to David's house, but David's wife, Michal,
- 6:43Speaker 2: made him escape through the window. Cleverly, she put a
- 6:46Speaker 2: statue under the covers of the bed and put goat's
- 6:49Speaker 2: hair on top of it. When Saul sent his men
- 6:52Speaker 2: to kill David, they uncovered the blankets to find the
- 6:55Speaker 2: statue in goat's hair. David ran all night towards Ramah.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Tears and sweat fell from his face. He considered Saul
- 7:03Speaker 2: like a father and had done nothing but serve him
- 7:06Speaker 2: with respect and honor. David's heart was broken. He had
- 7:11Speaker 2: his wife, his brother Jonathan, and his king Saul. Now
- 7:15Speaker 2: all was seemingly lost. David continued his escape to the
- 7:19Speaker 2: hills of Ramah. There he ran towards a large tent
- 7:23Speaker 2: tucked in the hills. It was surrounded by a fence
- 7:26Speaker 2: and a few goats were grazing nearby. A fire was
- 7:29Speaker 2: lit in front of the tent and Samuel sat there
- 7:32Speaker 2: staring at the stars. David did not know where else
- 7:36Speaker 2: to go. He fell at Samuel's feet and told him
- 7:39Speaker 2: all that Saul was doing. Saul caught word of David's
- 7:43Speaker 2: whereabouts and sent men to go and kill him. When
- 7:47Speaker 2: the men came to seize David, they found Samuel among
- 7:50Speaker 2: his students leading a worship session. Before they could ask
- 7:53Speaker 2: about David, the men spontaneously began to prophecy and worship
- 7:57Speaker 2: God with them. Enraptured by the glory of God, the
- 8:01Speaker 2: men were unable to find and kill David. Two more
- 8:04Speaker 2: times Saul sent men to kill David, and every time
- 8:08Speaker 2: they were met with the Spirit of God. God was
- 8:11Speaker 2: sending a clear message to Saul, saying, My spirit is
- 8:15Speaker 2: stronger than your will to kill. Do not pursue him.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yet Saul was stubborn and hell-bent on seeing David's head
- 8:23Speaker 2: mounted on his spear. Saul took matters into his own
- 8:27Speaker 2: hands and rode towards Ramah. He had not been there
- 8:30Speaker 2: since he was last anointed by Samuel. The land made
- 8:34Speaker 2: Saul uncomfortable. The evil spirit within him writhed as it
- 8:39Speaker 2: entered into the presence of God's people. Saul walked up
- 8:42Speaker 2: to Samuel, wanting to ask for David. Instead, Saul was
- 8:47Speaker 2: struck by a wave of God's spirit, and he too
- 8:50Speaker 2: worshipped and prophesied. Saul tore his clothes and lay naked
- 8:55Speaker 2: and humiliated in front of Samuel. Thus continued the battle
- 8:59Speaker 2: over Saul's heart. David would be safe from Saul for now,
- 9:03Speaker 2: but the evil that lingered over Saul would covet his blood.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Saul's sickened mind was a tragic representation of pride's effect
- 9:11Speaker 2: on the human soul. His paranoia and jealousy poisoned his
- 9:15Speaker 2: thoughts and turned every action into foolishness. Saul would soon
- 9:20Speaker 2: come face to face with his own sin, but not
- 9:24Speaker 2: before he made David's life a living hell.
- 9:30Speaker 3: In God's Word today, we find that Saul is overcome
- 9:33Speaker 3: with jealousy and hatred for David. He is tormented by
- 9:38Speaker 3: a terrible demonic spirit that is clouding his judgment. There
- 9:42Speaker 3: comes a time when God will give someone over to
- 9:44Speaker 3: their own thoughts, and that is what Saul is experiencing.
- 9:48Speaker 3: He is now so far from God that evil is
- 9:51Speaker 3: taking over his life. So as David sleeps in the palace,
- 9:56Speaker 3: Saul rants and raves and conspires to kill David. His
- 10:00Speaker 3: servants and his son Jonathan listen on as Saul voices
- 10:04Speaker 3: his dark desires to take David out. Jonathan, ever the
- 10:08Speaker 3: loyal faithful friend, warns David that his father wants to
- 10:12Speaker 3: kill him. But he tells him to stay put so
- 10:14Speaker 3: he can try to talk some sense into his demonized father.
- 10:18Speaker 3: David trusted Jonathan, and he waits. Jonathan pleads with his
- 10:22Speaker 3: father to let good sense prevail. David was a powerful,
- 10:27Speaker 3: mighty warrior who had rescued Israel from Goliath and many
- 10:30Speaker 3: other enemies since. Not only that, but he was like
- 10:34Speaker 3: a son to Saul, and he was a brother to Jonathan.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Jonathan's words seem to inject some sanity into Saul's mind,
- 10:42Speaker 3: and he vows not to harm David. But when after
- 10:45Speaker 3: another battle and another victory for David came, Saul hears
- 10:50Speaker 3: the Israelites praising David, not him, and his rage, his
- 10:55Speaker 3: envy takes over his life. Murderous attentions take control of him.
- 11:00Speaker 3: And as David is playing music to calm the king's heart,
- 11:04Speaker 3: once more he hurls a spear at David, who narrowly escapes.
- 11:09Speaker 3: David's wife, Michael, helps fool Saul's men by placing a
- 11:12Speaker 3: statue in David's bed so David can escape through a window.
- 11:15Speaker 3: We now see that Saul's own family has chosen sides
- 11:19Speaker 3: and they are on David's side and thus the Lord's side.
- 11:24Speaker 3: They know that David has been chosen by God and
- 11:27Speaker 3: that Saul has descended into madness. David runs far away,
- 11:32Speaker 3: but Saul doesn't give up and sends men after David.
- 11:35Speaker 3: David flees to Samuel and hides there. And now we
- 11:38Speaker 3: see not only Jonathan and Michael are defending and protecting David,
- 11:42Speaker 3: but God himself, as always, is covering David with his protection.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Listen to what happens in 1 Samuel 19, verse 20.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they
- 11:55Speaker 3: saw the company of the prophets prophesying and Samuel standing
- 11:59Speaker 3: as head over them, the Spirit of God came upon
- 12:01Speaker 3: the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. God sent
- 12:06Speaker 3: his Spirit upon these men who were sent to do
- 12:09Speaker 3: harm to David, and as a result, they began to prophesy.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Here again, we see that God's will will always be done.
- 12:18Speaker 3: He is supreme and sovereign over every situation in our lives.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Saul sends two more groups, and each time, they are
- 12:26Speaker 3: overcome by God's Spirit. Finally, Saul himself comes, and the
- 12:31Speaker 3: same thing happens to him. Saul, the once powerful and
- 12:35Speaker 3: mighty king of Israel, is now left naked and lying down,
- 12:38Speaker 3: unable to continue his quest to destroy David. God's purpose,
- 12:44Speaker 3: God's plan cannot be overcome. But Saul isn't finished. He's
- 12:49Speaker 3: out for blood. And the result of his unresolved sin
- 12:53Speaker 3: and pride and envy in his heart, his heart hardens
- 12:56Speaker 3: against God. And tomorrow, we will see how Jonathan continues
- 13:01Speaker 3: to watch out for his dear friend David, and protect
- 13:03Speaker 3: him from his own father, Saul. Dear God, help us
- 13:07Speaker 3: to learn from today's scripture that pride and jealousy will
- 13:10Speaker 3: only lead to disastrous results. Help us to be faithful friends,
- 13:15Speaker 3: just like Jonathan was to David, and care for those
- 13:18Speaker 3: that we love and their safety and protection. Most of all,
- 13:21Speaker 3: thank you for your love and your grace that always
- 13:24Speaker 3: protects your people, that nothing will separate us from the
- 13:28Speaker 3: love of God that is in Jesus Christ. Amen. Thank
