- 0:00We're thinking this morning about John chapter 10 verses 1
- 0:04through 10 as was read this morning.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: And the story is almost funny if it wasn't so relatable.
- 0:16So Jesus has just finished telling this vivid story about a
- 0:22shepherd and a sheep
- 0:24pen and a gatekeeper and thieves who climb over the walls and
- 0:30sheep who know their
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: shepherd's voice.
- 0:33It is a rich,
- 0:35layered image drawn from everyday world in first century
- 0:43Palestine.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So Jesus tells this story and then John writes,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: they did not understand what he was telling them.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Not the Pharisees, not the crowd, not the disciples, nobody.
- 1:01They stood there with what I imagine were furrowed brows and
- 1:07sideways glances at
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: each other and they probably were like,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: are you following this because I'm
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I'm really not.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So Jesus explains, I am the gate.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: What?
- 1:28I want to suggest to you this morning that if we are being
- 1:32honest with ourselves
- 1:332,000 years later with seminaries and commentaries and a whole
- 1:42industry of biblical
- 1:44scholarships behind us I'm not entirely sure that we really
- 1:49understand the story or
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: the explanation
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: We have heard this passage preached probably dozens of times.
- 2:02We know the vocabulary,
- 2:04we've seen the paintings of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the
- 2:09Gate,
- 2:10but
- 2:11I really believe that we have misunderstood the strangest and
- 2:16most provocative
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: thing that Jesus says in this section of Scripture.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Not that He is the shepherd, but that He is the gate.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And that's the claim I want to explore with you this morning.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: to get anywhere with this,
- 2:40we have to go back to the physical reality that Jesus is
- 2:45describing in this story.
- 2:47Because Jesus is pulling from imagery that His listeners would
- 2:53have or should have
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: recognized instantly.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: The way you or I might recognize the image of a silo or a tractor.
- 3:04A sheep pen in first century Palestine was not a fancy
- 3:10structure or anything like
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: what we imagine today.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: It was a rough stone enclosure,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: walls maybe four to six feet high,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: built without mortar,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: the stones stacked on top of each other,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: and they were fitted together,
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: just happenstance here and there.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: And along the top of the walls, shepherds would weave in sharp threads
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: thorn bushes, the ancient equivalent to barbed wire.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And the walls and the thorns together,
- 3:49they created a reasonably secure perimeter against animal
- 3:54predators and thieves,
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: bandits.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing, the sheep pen
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: It had no gate,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: at least not any physical gate,
- 4:09not a wooden or a steel gate that was attached to the rocks
- 4:13with hinges that would
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: open and close.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: It had an opening,
- 4:20a gap in the wall just large enough for the sheep to pass
- 4:26through single file.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: and as I said, it had no structural gate.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Instead, the gate was the shepherd of those
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And at night,
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: when the sheep were all counted and settled into the pen,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: the shepherd would literally lie down across that opening.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: His body became the gate.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And if a wolf or a thief wanted access to those sheep,
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: they had to go across,
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: go through the shepherd.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: He was not metaphorically the gate.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: He was literally,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: physically,
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: bodily the line of defense between safety and destruction for the flock.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And this was just normal practice in Palestine.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: It's even the case now.
- 5:42A researcher traveling in the Middle East in the early 20th
- 5:46century was shown a
- 5:48sheep pen like the one I just showed you by an Arab shepherd
- 5:53who was not a
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Christian and had not read the New Testament.
- 5:59And the scholar noticed that there was no gate on the pens
- 6:04opening and asked the
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: shepherd about it.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And the shepherd replied without hesitation, I am the gate.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: because he lay across that threshold every single night.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: His presence was the barrier.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: His body was the protection.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: So,
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: when Jesus says,
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I am the gate for the sheep,
- 6:29he is claiming the most physically present and personally
- 6:35costly form of protection
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: imaginable.
- 6:41He is saying,
- 6:42I put myself between you and everything that wants to harm you.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: You come in and go out under my protection.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: My body is what stands between the flock and its destruction.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Let me retell John 10 with Jesus inserted as the gate,
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: not just described as the gate,
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: so we can,
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: hopefully better understand what he is claiming here.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: There is a place where the sheep sleep at night.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: The walls are stone and rough thorn, and the air smells like wool.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: and dry grass.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: It is a simple place.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: It was never meant to be beautiful.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: It was only meant to be safe.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: The opening in the wall has no door, but it is guarded.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Jesus is there.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: He has stretched Himself across the threshold,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: His back against the stone,
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: His eyes open in the dark.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: He is not a gate you can push or pull.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: He is not a gate you can unlock with a key.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: He is a gate that you unlock through a relationship.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: He is a gate who breathes,
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: who watches,
- 8:21who knows the sound of every sleeping animal inside and every
- 8:28threat outside.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I hope you feel the difference.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: The gate is not a theological concept.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: The gate is a person.
- 8:47Present,
- 8:49bodily,
- 8:50awake in the dark,
- 8:52willing to take the hit if the wolf comes.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: He is there to keep the sheep safe and alive.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: The church has,
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: for most of its history,
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: taken this passage and used it primarily in one direction.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: as a statement of exclusivity.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the only gate.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: You must go through Him.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: There is no other way into the pen.
- 9:35and you know there's truth in that John 14 6 is a real verse
- 9:42Jesus does claim to be
- 9:44the way the truth and the life exclusive claims are embedded in
- 9:51the gospel of
- 9:52course but that is not what Jesus is saying here in this
- 9:58passage we have made the
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: gate
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: image almost entirely about who gets in and who doesn't.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: We have used it as a kind of a theological border control,
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: a determinant for what religious system is the right one.
- 10:23And in doing that I think we have misunderstood the message of
- 10:29this passage.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: The message of what Jesus is saying here.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Notice what the gate does in this passage.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, it keeps certain things out, thieves and bandits and predators.
- 10:47They cannot get in through the gate because He is the gate and
- 10:52Jesus does not
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: collaborate with destruction.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: But the gate, it also opens deliberately.
- 11:06repeatedly to let the sheep go in and come back,
- 11:12let the sheep go out and come back in.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: The language in verse 9 is essential to our understanding here.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: They will come in and go out and find pasture.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: In and out.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: In and out.
- 11:34and as Yvonne so beautifully said last week,
- 11:39the God of and,
- 11:42in and out,
- 11:44in and out.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: The gate is not a one-way turnstile into a holding pen for the sheep.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Jesus is not describing a fence that keeps his people locked in or out.
- 12:01The gate is a threshold of a living rhythm for the sheep,
- 12:06who are,
- 12:07by the way,
- 12:09already sheep.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Safety at night,
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: freedom and nourishment in the day,
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: and the ability to return to safety once again.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: The pen is not the only destination.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: The pasture is also a destination.
- 12:33The pen is just where the sheep are safe while they are
- 12:37sleeping,
- 12:38and then they go out again.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: This is a parable about the safety of the flock,
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: not a vision for controlling who is part of the flock.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: The gate does not convert non-sheep into sheep
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: It just protects the flock from death or abuse.
- 13:03Now we have to go somewhere that may be a little bit
- 13:05uncomfortable for some.
- 13:08Jesus says in verse 8,
- 13:10all who have come before me are thieves and robbers.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: And then in verse 10, the thief comes to kill and steal and destroy.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: We hear this and we think of the obvious villains,
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: the Pharisees with whom Jesus was arguing with.
- 13:33We picture the people who are obviously the bad actors in this
- 13:38story,
- 13:39right?
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: The scholar who studies Ezekiel will recognize this immediately.
- 13:46In Ezekiel 34 God tears into the shepherds of Israel with some
- 13:52of the most
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: scorching language in the entire Old Testament.
- 13:59Remember these are not pagans or foreign oppressors that God is
- 14:04talking with in Ezekiel.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: These are Israel's very own religious leaders.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: God says through Ezekiel,
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: you eat the curds,
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: you clothe yourselves with the wool of those poor little sheep,
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: you slaughter the choice animals,
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: but you do not take care of the flock.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: They are feeding
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: off the sheep rather than feeding and protecting them.
- 14:35They were using their position of shepherd as a vehicle for
- 14:40personal power and gain.
- 14:44And Jesus in this passage is standing in that same prophetic
- 14:50tradition when he
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: speaks to the Pharisees in John chapter 10.
- 14:56Some scholars go as far as to suggest that Jesus is actually
- 15:01referring not only to
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: the Pharisees,
- 15:03but also to messianic pretenders who came before with and will
- 15:11come after Jesus,
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: the true Messiah.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And we have seen this too.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: It has happened across the entire sweep of Christian history.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And it's happening today.
- 15:31We are living in a moment where story after story is breaking
- 15:36about religious
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: leaders who use their platforms,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: their authority,
- 15:41and their spiritual power to exploit the very people they were
- 15:45supposed to be
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: taking care of.
- 15:48We have watched institutional churches cover up abuse rather
- 15:54than confronting it.
- 15:56We have watched celebrity pastors surround themselves with
- 16:00people whose only
- 16:02function is to ensure that the leader's comfort is protected
- 16:08and his reputation
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: remains clean.
- 16:12We have seen people weaponize the language of spiritual
- 16:17authority to silence
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: questions,
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: isolate the vulnerable and demand the loyalty that only belongs to God.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: We have even seen convincing messianic pretenders come our way.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: As Jesus said in Matthew 24,
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: 24,
- 16:40for false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform
- 16:47signs and wonders to
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: deceive,
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: if possible,
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: even the elect.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: These are the thieves and the bandits climbing over the wall
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: in the dark.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: These are the people who bypass the gate and charge admission.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: They turn the threshold of grace into a toll booth.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: They decide who is in and who is out.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: Not on the basis of the good shepherd's way,
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: but on the basis of their own preferences,
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: purses,
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: politics,
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: and power structures.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: and the sheep suffer for it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Many of them still carry deep wounds.
- 17:38This is why it matters so much that we understand what Jesus
- 17:44means when he says,
- 17:46I am the gate.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And for me, it's not what I've always heard.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: It is not a statement about who is in and who is out.
- 17:57It is a promise of safety and an abundant life for all
- 18:03interested followers.
- 18:06There is one more layer here that I don't want to rush through
- 18:11and I'm very excited
- 18:12about because it connects directly with Easter which we have
- 18:16just walked through
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: and to what we believe about the resurrection.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: If the shepherd's body is the gate,
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: if Jesus literally,
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: physically places himself between the flock and destruction,
- 18:38then the cross is the ultimate expression of what it means for
- 18:45Jesus to be the
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: gate.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: to put one's life at risk for those in one's care.
- 18:56When Jesus died on the cross as the gate,
- 19:00He was not simply paying for the sheep's sins.
- 19:05He was absorbing the full weight of everything,
- 19:09seeking to destroy the sheep.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy the sheep
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: and it had to go through him.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And he let it.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: He took it.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: He stood in the gap bodily and held the line and it killed him.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And then the resurrection
- 19:38The gate that was attacked on Good Friday was re-established on
- 19:43Easter Sunday.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Not just re-established in this realm,
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: but re-established in a way that death itself cannot control any longer.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: The gate held.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: The gate survived.
- 20:02The gate opened in a way for the sheep to enter the pasture of
- 20:08abundant life.
- 20:11When Jesus said,
- 20:12I am the gate,
- 20:14he was saying,
- 20:16I am here to keep you safe.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: You can trust me.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: I am not here to pin you up.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: I'm here to
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: to set you free amen
