- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers, and this is Studio Signal — your daily M&E intelligence briefing, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's get into it. Alright studio fam, it is Tuesday, April seventh. So yesterday we talked about David Ellison playing with OPEC money for the Warner Bros. Discovery deal. Today, we're getting a little more color on the strategy. According to TheWrap, Paramount is now on the record saying that the investment from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds offers, quote, "strategic and commercial opportunities." That's the corporate-speak translation for "Yes, the money is real, and we think it gives us a global edge." This is an important milestone in the 110 billion dollar deal, and it's basically Paramount's leadership telling Wall Street to take this bid very, very seriously. And it looks like the street is listening... more on that in the market wrap. Meanwhile, the box office story of the year just keeps getting crazier. Per Deadline, the 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie' is not slowing down. After that record-smashing opening weekend we've been tracking, it just pulled in over 16 million dollars on Monday alone. That is the best Monday at the U.S. box office so far this year. This thing is an absolute juggernaut. It’s proving that with the right IP, you can still create a four-quadrant cultural event that pulls everyone off their couches and into a movie theater. The ripple effects of this are going to be felt for months. While Universal is dominating theaters, Disney is making a massive global play on the small screen. The Hollywood Reporter says ESPN is officially launching on Disney+ in Europe and Asia-Pacific. This move expands the sports behemoth into 53 new markets. It's a huge step in bundling more content into the flagship Disney+ service, trying to make it an all-in-one, can't-cancel destination. It's a direct shot across the bow at competitors, signaling that Disney sees live sports as its key to unlocking international growth and reducing churn. And speaking of must-watch content... get ready for your next obsession. If you, like the rest of the planet, were captivated by 'Baby Reindeer' back in 2024, you'll want to see this. Variety dropped the first trailer for 'Half Man,' Richard Gadd's new project. It stars Gadd alongside Jamie Bell and is being described as an exploration of male rage. Coming off the blockbuster success of 'Baby Reindeer,' the expectations for this are sky-high. This is Gadd's first big swing since that phenomenon, and it looks like he's diving right back into complex, dark, and deeply personal territory. From adult drama to the complete opposite end of the spectrum... 'Cocomelon'. Variety has a fascinating exclusive that Moonbug, the studio behind the preschool giant, is going to start applying child development research from UCLA directly to its content. This is a really interesting move. It’s an attempt to add a layer of academic credibility to the world's biggest kids' show. It’s a smart way to address some of the "is this good for my kid?" anxiety that parents feel, essentially turning screen time into "research-backed" screen time. Alright, let's check the pulse of the M&E market before we wrap up. It is a pretty rough sea out there today... the sector is looking bearish with 24 companies we track in the red and only 6 in the green. The big story is Paramount, which is absolutely flying. It’s the top mover, up a massive 8.88% today. That is a direct and powerful reaction to the confirmation we talked about earlier... that Middle East sovereign wealth fund money is officially backing the Warner Bros. deal. Next up is Warner Music, having a good day up two and a half percent. On the flip side, AMC is down almost six percent, giving back some of its recent box office-fueled gains. Apple is also having a tough day, sliding down nearly five percent. And Nvidia is down about two percent. The theme today is clear... the market is down, but specific, deal-driven news can make a stock completely defy the trend. That's your signal for today. I'm Kai Rivers — thanks for tuning in, and I'll see you tomorrow.
