- 0:37It's a fact none of us get to fish as much as we want.
- 0:40Almost overnight, planning a fishing trip went from a gazetteer and word of mouth to the entire Internet.
- 0:46There have never been more resources available for fishing, but it's a challenge trying to wade through the digital noise to find the most current and relevant information.
- 0:54Spend less time surfing the Internet and more time on the water with TroutRoutes.

- 1:32Now on to our interview.
- 1:35Well, Eric, welcome to The Articulate Fly.
- 1:37Hey Marvin, thanks for having me on.
- 1:39Yeah, dude, I'm super looking forward to our conversation.
- 1:42And we have a tradition on The Articulate Fly.
- 1:44We like to ask all of our guests to share their earliest fishing memory.
- 1:48My earliest fishing memory.
- 1:52I'll go back in the archives and say that my earliest fishing memory is probably a lot like a lot of people's a little popper on top for with a bluegill, I think I was in.
- 2:06It was definitely Alabama because that's where I was born and raised.
- 2:09But like catching bluegill will always be the memory that I've had.
- 2:15You know, this is something simple but fun and I feel like sometimes I go back to that.
- 2:21Like I'll go back to like a, a pond with a bluegill or like a little bass or something.
- 2:26Just, just to like check yourself.
- 2:29Yeah, it's important to get back to your roots.
- 2:31Now, was that on a fly rod or did you come to fly fishing later, man.
- 2:34So I came to, I came to fly fishing later.
- 2:38I grew up in Alabama, bass fishing with my dad.
- 2:42And I just remember just like going out with worms and stuff, you know, we were now like, I don't know if you want to go etiquette wise, but we used to get rowdy with like worms and this whatever
- 2:56cricket, you know, I remember going and buying this like a thing of crickets and just getting them.
- 3:01And now I'm going and trying deer hair on and feathers on hooks and just not getting them.
- 3:09It's like, what are we doing?
- 3:10Why do we make our life so much harder just to be better?
- 3:14I don't know.
- 3:16So, you know, the trick with the crickets is you got to keep them in the cooler so they don't start moving around, right?
- 3:20Yeah, exactly.
- 3:21You got to freeze them.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23So.
- 3:23So when did you actually start fly fishing?
- 3:25Fly fishing came later in my life.
- 3:28I was the bass fisherman forever.
- 3:30But I got into rock and roll.
- 3:33First of all.
- 3:33I, I, I played the strings on the guitar more than I fished for a minute.
- 3:39And I got into fly fishing on my own.
- 3:42Honestly, like, I don't know what, it was a weird one.
- 3:47Like I picked it up maybe 15 years ago or 10, 10 or 15 years ago.
- 3:54Like, I'm weird with dates but like, I just like got into it because I like being in the woods, I like being around water.
- 4:02But like I grew up just catching fish on like, just junk, you know.
- 4:07Now I'm just like tying flies and catching them on stuff that I created.
- 4:11So this is really cool to me.
- 4:14Yeah.
- 4:15Neat.
- 4:15And so, you know, were you self taught or did you have some kind of fly fishing?
- 4:19Like, I'm actually pretty self taught, honestly.
- 4:22Like, I was, I scanned over some of your questions.
- 4:25Like I've never really had like mentors or anything.
- 4:29Like I got into it like, like I grew up like spin fishing and stuff.
- 4:33My dad loved fishing, you know, but like fly fishing came kind of out of nowhere, honestly.
- 4:40And I've always had like an artistic side of my mind, you know?
- 4:45And like I always like drawing and like watercolor and stuff.
- 4:49And like I just get like fly time.
- 4:51Just like I called on the fly time because it's like an art, right?
- 4:55And like all the balance and like proportions and color, like somebody told me the other day is like your color blends are next level.
- 5:02And I think it comes from that artistic side.
- 5:04But, like, I've never had anybody, like, teach me or show me other than, like, I grew up in the YouTube era, where I can look at everybody, you know, or learn from everybody.
- 5:15Yeah, it's super neat.
- 5:16You know, it's so funny because so many people I interview on the articulate fly are musicians and artists.
- 5:21Yeah, I think there's something to it, man.
- 5:23Like, I don't know, like, fly tying to me is.
- 5:27I mean, it's definitely an art, but like, this, I don't know, like, the blending color and it makes me feel comfortable.
- 5:35And like, you catch.
- 5:37If you ever catch a fish on a fly that you tied, it's just like the best feeling in the world.
- 5:44Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 5:45And so, you know, so you kind of came to fly fishing later.
- 5:47When did you get the guide bug?
- 5:49Oh, I got the guide bug.
- 5:51I think I've been guiding almost 10 years, or, you know, give or take, but, like, I've been ripping.
- 5:57I love guiding.
- 5:59I love teaching.
- 6:02What I was saying to somebody earlier, it was like, if you get in my boat, like, I am your teacher, you know, I want to fish through you, and I want you to and me to be on the
- 6:14same page.
- 6:16So once I felt that, like, I got confident, I guess I was getting confident in your guide game, you know, like, if you get in my bed, I'm confident.
- 6:23And now that I'm out west, it's like I'm learning new water and stuff.
- 6:27And it's like, I really feel like it takes a team.
- 6:30Right.
- 6:31And I.
- 6:31I want to fish with you and for you.
- 6:35Yeah, very neat.
- 6:36And so you cut your teeth right?
- 6:37On kind of the.
- 6:38The Georgia tailwaters around Atlanta, right?
- 6:40Yeah, I was out of.
- 6:41Yeah, I was out of Georgia.
- 6:42I worked at Alpharetta Outfitters killer shop.
- 6:47And all those dudes are kick ass.
- 6:49And I just never.
- 6:51Like, I did really well there.
- 6:53I did Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, of course.
- 6:58And I just love the game out there, you know, I just beat myself up too much, I guess.
- 7:04Like, I, like, got in my head, I wanted bigger, better things, and I was like, I gotta go to the Mecca, you know, just to experience it, you know?
- 7:12Nothing against the South.
- 7:14The Southeast is always home, you know, I'm never gonna not.
- 7:18That's never not gonna be home to me.
- 7:21So now, like, I was like, I gotta go experience Montana, you know, it's just like, that's where the.
- 7:26All the drift boats are made.
- 7:28That's where I have to be.
- 7:30Yeah.
- 7:30Dude, it's.
- 7:30Well, my.
- 7:31My heart lives there too, so it's kind of interesting.
- 7:33So when you were breaking into the guide game in Georgia, you know, did you do it by being a shop rat or like, you know, kind of.
- 7:38How did you get the break and start taking people out for money?
- 7:42I kind of built my name and this like, there was another question on your thing.
- 7:47I built my name on my own, which is kind of like, I feel like that's the most kick ass way to do it.
- 7:53Right.
- 7:54Nobody helped me.
- 7:55Like, I never had help.
- 7:57I started from ground zero and even in the guide world, I never.
- 8:03One of your questions really resonated with me where it was like, it.
- 8:06You was that one.
- 8:08It was like a mentor.
- 8:09Yeah, that's the next question.
- 8:10So your time is perfect, right?
- 8:12I scan.
- 8:13I scanned it.
- 8:14Right.
- 8:14I scanned it 30 minutes before the interview because I wanted it to be raw, you know?
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:19I don't like to overthink stuff.
- 8:21I like to be real.
- 8:22But, like, I never had a mentor other than YouTube or whatever, you know, My mentors are the fly tying.
- 8:31Fly tying is like the only thing I really delved into.
- 8:35Like, all like Charlie Craven, Kelly Galloup, you know, the usual suspects.
- 8:42But like, guiding and stuff is like, I jumped into this game and this took off on my own.
- 8:50Like, for some reason it just clicked.
- 8:52I don't know if that makes sense with anybody or resonates with anybody.
- 8:55Like, I never had anybody to like, talk to or anything.
- 8:58You know what I mean?
- 8:59Yeah.
- 9:00So how long did it take you to kind of crack the code on the tailwaters?
- 9:03A couple years.
- 9:04You know what I mean?
- 9:05Like, I figured out my game and I just got nasty on it.
- 9:08Like, I was just like 100.
- 9:10I'm always 110% with anything I do.
- 9:12You know what I mean?
- 9:13Yep.
- 9:14Like, even if I'm ripping guitar, drawing or whatever, like, I like, I get into my stuff, you know, and like, this is.
- 9:22Took off in a way that I've never felt anything take off with me personally.
- 9:28Like, I got into it, like, and it felt right, you know?
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:31And so when you said you kind of built your own business, were you doing it on Instagram?
- 9:35You know, were you doing it by word of mouth?
- 9:37Instagram is like, definitely the thriving point.
- 9:40Like, it was like free advertising, you know, I didn't have to pay for anything.
- 9:44And then I just like started ripping and.
- 9:48And I was just being myself.
- 9:49You know what I mean?
- 9:50Yeah, dude.
- 9:51And you're.
- 9:51I mean, your pictures on Instagram Are awesome.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54I was always into photography for my granddad, my mom's dad.
- 9:58I.
- 9:58I have his camera right here.
- 9:59It's like a Canon AE one.
- 10:02And I shot film for a little bit, you know, But I always love, like, I just love, like, if you're gonna do something like, why not get a good picture?
- 10:11Yeah.
- 10:12And they're so much better than just gripping grands.
- 10:14Right.
- 10:14I mean, like, I mean they're just.
- 10:15They're really good.
- 10:16Right?
- 10:16I get those like, as a guide.
- 10:19Like, some people are like, do you even catch fish?
- 10:22It's like, yeah, I catch fish, but I don't have to prove anything to anybody.
- 10:25Does that make sense?
- 10:26It's a hundred percent.
- 10:27Makes sense.
- 10:28I don't have to show you anything that I don't have to show you.
- 10:31But if you like me, then like me.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35I always say, you know, all the only feedback I need from the fish is that I'm not out there just waving a stick around for nothing.
- 10:41Right?
- 10:41Like, yeah, I can fish all day and just get a follow.
- 10:43And I'm like, yeah, we're on it, right?
- 10:45Yeah, but like with my client.
- 10:46Yeah, exactly.
- 10:47But like with my clients and stuff, like, if that's their first fish or something, I'll get that, you know, like, congratulations, you know, but like all the other stuff in between is this, like, enjoy it.
- 10:59You know, I think I grew up in a special period where we didn't have, like, I didn't have to prove something to somebody on social media.
- 11:08Like, we enjoy stuff and just enjoy it.
- 11:11Like that fish is living.
- 11:13Put it back and let it grow and enjoy it.
- 11:16I think I got like, I love to get a good big fish picture, you know, don't get me wrong.
- 11:21But like, I don't have to just spray and pray all over the Internet to make my name, you know?
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:28It's kind of.
- 11:29I kind of like being secret.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:30It's kind of funny because, you know, at this point, like, I have more than enough fish pictures and I think the only person that would ever care is just me.
- 11:37Right.
- 11:37I'm kind of tired of seeing it.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:39But, you know, so I almost never take fish pictures anymore and.
- 11:43Because what I say is I have it in my mind.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:45And.
- 11:46And not that people don't care, but like, no one cares as much as I care.
- 11:49And like, as soon as I don't remember it anymore, it's kind of gone forever and it's okay.
- 11:52Right.
- 11:53Like, bless their hearts, but it's like this fish need to be fish like, you know, like you had a family reunion.
- 12:00You don't want your, hey, this is the best you ever looked.
- 12:05That's it.
- 12:06I don't want to be known.
- 12:07I don't want to be known for that.
- 12:09Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:11So just like, take their.
- 12:12Take their picture.
- 12:13Let them be fish and enjoy it.
- 12:15And I just think, like, we're living in a world where it's just like, we expect so much from anything and it's like, just didn't.
- 12:25Just be yourself and love what you love, be passionate about what you love and be better for the world and the, you know, your community.
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:34Very neat.
- 12:35And so it's interesting, right?
- 12:36So you're ripping in down in Georgia.
- 12:37You dial it in after a few years.
- 12:39Golly.
- 12:40I had her dialed in there.
- 12:41I was living it.
- 12:42I.
- 12:43I, like, I could go back there now that I know some of the flies out here.
- 12:46I'll be ripping.
- 12:48Yeah.
- 12:49And so, you know, you.
- 12:50You did that, but then you kind of had this itch to kind of go west, and you just kind of finished your first season out in Montana.
- 12:55Yeah.
- 12:55So I haven't guided out here.
- 12:57One of your questions is like, have you guided?
- 13:00And I was like, I'm working with Kelly and Kelly's like.
- 13:03I think he's mentioned that he would love to have me on the permit or whatever, but it's like, me mentally coming out of.
- 13:10So I'm gonna get personal here, if that's cool.
- 13:13That's cool.
- 13:14So I'm coming out of a divorce.
- 13:1814 year divorce.
- 13:19And I was still.
- 13:20That's my best friend still.
- 13:21And it's just me, like, chasing my dreams.
- 13:25But, like, now that I've had five or six months off, like, I've been trying to, like, refine myself, like, as human and being my, you know, just trying to find myself in general.
- 13:38I've lost myself.
- 13:40And I went through a little bad period in my life, you know, nothing bad to anybody.
- 13:44I never did bad, anybody other than myself, you know, But I'm trying to, like, everybody always sees me as like, the best tire, you know, or not the best, but like a good tire and just having fun, you
- 13:57know.
- 13:57Whenever you see a picture of me, it looks like I'm having the best time.
- 14:01And sometimes I just have the worst times.
- 14:04But, like, I think I'm coming out of that rut, though.
- 14:07And now, like, once again, like, I'm not gonna guide if I'm not mentally stable, you know, and like, I don't know the water out here.
- 14:15So I want to learn the water, Remember?
- 14:17I don't know if you remember tell me telling you that, but it's like, I'm never gonna guide if I'm not 110% confident in my game.
- 14:26So it's gonna.
- 14:26Like, I've guided.
- 14:28I know I can get fish out here.
- 14:30I've caught fish with people, but it's like, I'm not gonna guide.
- 14:34I'm not gonna get you in my boat if I'm not confident.
- 14:38So I'm building up my confidence again in my life.
- 14:41I took a little downfall, you know, and now I'm like in new water and stuff.
- 14:45And I love the challenge.
- 14:47It's only gonna make me stronger, better.
- 14:50So now I'm just learning.
- 14:52I'm back to my learning stage, and I think this is what I need right now.
- 14:55Yeah, that's super cool.
- 14:56And so, you know, I.
- 14:57I didn't.
- 14:58I'd always like looking at your pictures.
- 14:59I thought you were guiding, but I unders.
- 15:00And I totally get the.
- 15:01Because, yeah, I was gonna mention that to you, but it'.
- 15:05I haven't been guiding only like five months, like, but five months off from guiding has made me realize, like, what a grind guiding is.
- 15:14Like, I think that's what tore me up mentally.
- 15:17Like, I love it, and I'm really good.
- 15:19If you talk to any of my clients, they were like, you know, I don't think you'll ever hear bad just cause I go too hard.
- 15:26I was coming off my trips, it's like so burnt out, you know, just mentally, because I gave it all to them, you know, and I loved it, though.
- 15:34I'm not like, it sounds like it's like I'm mad at it or like bummed about it, but it's like, it does wear and tear on your mind.
- 15:42I don't care what guide you talk to.
- 15:44It's like it.
- 15:45It wears you out on a different level on the backside if you give it, you know?
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:51I think there are unique challenges to guiding, but I would also say too, that, you know, anybody that wants to do anything at a high level.
- 15:57Yeah, exactly.
- 15:59It's very.
- 16:00It's very emotionally expensive, right?
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:02I think.
- 16:02I think I just got.
- 16:04I lost myself because I lost myself in other people.
- 16:08I put myself in too many other.
- 16:10I wanted everybody else to have fun, but I forgot that I had to have fun too, or be happy.
- 16:17And I was like, I was just like clocking in nine, you know, doing eight hours.
- 16:21You know, it's like, it's a personal thing, like, ever.
- 16:25If you're A guy.
- 16:26And I know there's guys that's done it for 40, 50 plus years and that's congratulations.
- 16:32But it wore me the smack out.
- 16:33Maybe I was just going too hard.
- 16:35I would love to talk to them about it.
- 16:37Yeah, I think it's tough.
- 16:39So, I mean, so, you know, the good news is, you know, you know, you're kind of spending a little bit of time working on yourself and kind of getting things kind of back.
- 16:45But you've clearly been fishing, so it'd be super cool.
- 16:49Yeah.
- 16:49To hear your thoughts on, like, the differences between fishing, like, you know, southeastern tailwaters and fishing out kind of in the Holy Grail waters of Montana.
- 16:58Holy Grail out here is definitely trout specific.
- 17:01You know, they eat.
- 17:03They eat them out here.
- 17:04They eat like this.
- 17:06Cool.
- 17:07Like, I think one of the biggest things that I've noticed since I've been out here is like, ma.
- 17:12Like, actually they eat the hatch.
- 17:15That was like a big thing to me.
- 17:17They're like, really keyed in on that.
- 17:19And back east is like.
- 17:20Yeah, they're keyed in on it.
- 17:22You know, you get like a good sulphur hatch on the South Holsten.
- 17:25You know, all that.
- 17:25But like, they only want that out here.
- 17:29Yeah.
- 17:30Very cool.
- 17:30Did you hit the salmon fly hatch this year?
- 17:32Yeah, salmon fly is kind of a weird one this year.
- 17:35It's like, they would.
- 17:36We got a couple good ones.
- 17:38I feel like salmon fly fishing is like streamer fishing.
- 17:41It's like just kind of.
- 17:42You gotta just get her tucked in there.
- 17:45Right.
- 17:45You know, and then right place, right time.
- 17:48It.
- 17:49It was weird.
- 17:49Like, I think Kelly said it too.
- 17:51It's just like, it sounds fun getting them on, like, big foam, you know, but like, it's not all that.
- 17:58I'd rather get a good caddis hatch, honestly.
- 18:01Or like just any other dry.
- 18:04Yeah.
- 18:04So do you think you'll be guiding next season in Montana, or do you still have more homework?
- 18:08Oh, no, I'm gonna.
- 18:09I'm gonna get back on the boat.
- 18:11You know, I just, like, I have that in my blood.
- 18:14Like, as much as I said I had to work on myself, I do miss it.
- 18:19Not waking up at like 4 or 5am and like, riffing with some new people every day in my boat.
- 18:25I do miss that.
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:26I was like, I'm good at guiding, you know, or not.
- 18:29Like, is that weird to say?
- 18:31No, I think it's okay to say.
- 18:32I guess it's like I'm con.
- 18:34Like more just like I feel like it's at home when I'm in My boat with a couple new people that's never fly fished.
- 18:41Like, it just makes me feel confident in my game whenever it's like, hey, I got these two new people, and they never fly fish, and I'm gonna get them on their best fish or a fish.
- 18:53Yeah.
- 18:54So tell me what it's like, you know, a day on the boat with Eric Hurst.
- 18:57A day on the boat with me is just a.
- 19:00I mean, a day with me in general is just a ripper.
- 19:03Like, I'm just a part.
- 19:05I'm a party.
- 19:06Like you.
- 19:07Anybody that's ever met me, it's like, I just have fun.
- 19:11Like, I signed up to have fun, and I signed up to teach.
- 19:15And, like, I want other people to be better because of me.
- 19:20Like, I'm not.
- 19:21Like, I'm not a person that wants other people to fail.
- 19:27Like, I want to teach you as much as I can.
- 19:30I want.
- 19:30I want you to have memories of me, you know?
- 19:34Like, I just want to have a good time, I guess, is basically what it boils down to.
- 19:38Yeah.
- 19:38Tunes on the Boat.
- 19:40What's up?
- 19:41Tunes on the boat.
- 19:42Yeah.
- 19:43Hell, yeah.
- 19:43You got a riff.
- 19:45You got to have some Rolling Stones.
- 19:47You got to have some heavy stuff, too, though, and then whatever you want to bring.
- 19:52I love tunes on the boat.
- 19:54I don't think the fish care.
- 19:55I think it almost attracts them.
- 19:57And all that banana stuff can get out of my face.
- 20:01You bring all your bad luck with me.
- 20:03I want to break bad luck.
- 20:05I'm a big bad luck breaker.
- 20:06I want to make stuff good.
- 20:08I want to make bad luck, good luck.
- 20:10Yeah, that's a.
- 20:11That's a fly name for you.
- 20:12You need to tie a fly called the bad luck breaker.
- 20:14Yeah, that's actually a good one.
- 20:17So are you.
- 20:18You like,'80s hair metal in the boat?
- 20:20Yes.
- 20:21Look at me.
- 20:22If you've seen a picture of me, I'm just like.
- 20:25I don't know.
- 20:26I'm.
- 20:26It's about good times.
- 20:27Yeah.
- 20:28What's your favorite hair metal, Ben?
- 20:30Oh, dude, that's a tough one.
- 20:31I've got a whole mix of all that stuff.
- 20:34I've been listening to some.
- 20:35Some Motley Crue and some Twisted Sister.
- 20:37So back in the day, you know, when I was in middle school or high school, I had a gerbil named Van Halen, so.
- 20:43Van Halen.
- 20:44Yeah.
- 20:44Not Van Hager, Van Halen.
- 20:46Right.
- 20:47I got you.
- 20:48So.
- 20:48So what about, you know, so you got good tunes.
- 20:51I know you're.
- 20:52You're kind of teaching.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:54And you want people to Fish through you.
- 20:55We didn't even talk about Skynard, by the way.
- 20:58Oh, God.
- 20:59Kelly always, like, whenever Skynard comes on the shop, he's like, this is your loose.
- 21:05So talk to me about, like, do you do, like, crazy short lunches?
- 21:08You got anything like that going on or is it good?
- 21:11No, I love a good lunch.
- 21:13Like, whatever makes people have fun once again.
- 21:17But I.
- 21:18I like a good, like, quesadilla.
- 21:21Like, I make, like, early quesadillas sometimes and then st on the Blackstone, you know, with like a good green salsa, guacamole, have some chip and dip.
- 21:33Like, I'm a big Mexican lover, you know, I love Mexican food, so I want people to love that.
- 21:38But, like.
- 21:39And then you go into, like, sandwiches and stuff.
- 21:41But, like, I like to incorporate.
- 21:44I've always been a big fan of, like, bringing, like, local restaurants and stuff.
- 21:50So sometimes you get, like, a early sandwich, you know, and freeze it or whatever, or put it in the cooler and have it the next day.
- 21:57But it brings the community together.
- 21:59Like, we got demos, like, little butcher shop here.
- 22:04It's like you can get their meat and throw it on something there.
- 22:07People are always just like, ali, this is good.
- 22:09And it's like, it brings somebody else, you know, money or fame or whatever.
- 22:14You want to take it, you know?
- 22:15Yeah, just build up, build up other people.
- 22:18It's like we're only here for.
- 22:19They say you're only here for once, but, like, we'll see.
- 22:23Yeah, yeah.
- 22:24Favorite boat beer.
- 22:26Boat beer.
- 22:28That's tough, man.
- 22:31Modela with a lime.
- 22:33We gotta have a lime with a little tahin.
- 22:37Yeah.
- 22:38And what's your.
- 22:39What's your favorite new Montana beer?
- 22:41New Montana beer.
- 22:44One of my buddies from the shop, Iggy, took me out to this place in Bozeman, and they have, like, Grazing Clouds is the name of it.
- 22:55It's like, it was a good one.
- 22:57You can get it at a couple gas stations.
- 22:58But it's like kind of.
- 23:00It's like a little higher gravity beer, I guess.
- 23:03But, like, always go Modelo lime, though.
- 23:06Other than that.
- 23:08Yeah.
- 23:08So I would say my favorite Montana beer is Cold smoke.
- 23:11I never had it.
- 23:12Yeah, yeah, it's a scotch.
- 23:14It's a scotch ale, and it's from Kettle Brewing, I think, in Missoula.
- 23:18But, yeah, I can promise you it's on tap at the Gravel Bar.
- 23:21Nice.
- 23:21Yeah.
- 23:22Okay.
- 23:22I'm gonna have to go over there after this to celebrate me talking to you about good things.
- 23:27Yeah, you should see what you'll see.
- 23:28A couple of my stickers on the.
- 23:29Cool.
- 23:29On the beer cooler there too.
- 23:31So.
- 23:32So, yeah, I mean, I think I have a pretty good idea, but why don't you tell me a little bit more about what you think, Eric, it takes to be a good guide.
- 23:39To be a guide in the world that we have now is.
- 23:44This would be, like, really personal.
- 23:47And, like, you just have to love to teach and love to, like, just share stuff.
- 23:53Like, it's not like, catching fish is secondary, in my opinion.
- 23:58And, like, you have to just know how to, like, talk to people and have a good time.
- 24:02Like, when people are in my boat, we're, like, fishing.
- 24:05Like, the fish aren't gonna.
- 24:06We can't.
- 24:06I can't make them eat, you know, and I can tie the craziest flies I could tie.
- 24:11But, like, to be a guide, you really have to have the mind state to teach and just be yourself and.
- 24:21And this.
- 24:24This.
- 24:26Live and learn.
- 24:28Yeah.
- 24:29Well, there you go.
- 24:30So, you know, if we shift gears a little bit so you kind of.
- 24:32You kind of between starting to fish and coming to fly fishing was a little bit of time.
- 24:37When did you kind of get the bug for fly tying?
- 24:39Dude, fly tying is what I'm about.
- 24:42Like, I think I'm at fly tying level.
- 24:45My fly tying level is better than my oar level.
- 24:49It's crazy to say.
- 24:50Like, I've got.
- 24:51I've talked to a couple people around here.
- 24:52It's like, I think I'm getting into that.
- 24:55That period.
- 24:56I've heard a couple people say before me, but it's like, I feel more confident on my vise than I do on my oars anymore.
- 25:04Like, I want to rip on streamers just because, like, I just rip, like, dry flies and.
- 25:09And midges too.
- 25:10But, like, if you just give me on a vise, that's just where I feel calm, comfortable.
- 25:16Yeah.
- 25:16And so, I mean, when did that happen?
- 25:17Did it happen as soon as you started fly fishing or a little bit later?
- 25:20No, I think I was tying before I was guiding.
- 25:24I just, like, get the art of it, you know, I just get profiles.
- 25:27I get symmetry.
- 25:29I just understand, like, how fish look and like, just like, how they're built and like, bait fish.
- 25:36That's.
- 25:36I think that's what got me in.
- 25:37Like, tying streamers is like.
- 25:39I understand, like, profile because from art, you know, like, balance and all that.
- 25:45Yeah.
- 25:46But, like, I don't know.
- 25:48I just love Tank.
- 25:49I'm gonna.
- 25:50I, like, I think I'm just gonna be a tire eventually.
- 25:54Yeah, there are plenty of people that do that.
- 25:56What was your.
- 25:56What Was your first vise?
- 25:58My first vice was from a buddy of mine, Rooker.
- 26:02I was.
- 26:02His name is Rooker.
- 26:03He's in Atlanta.
- 26:05His granddad.
- 26:06I meant his granddad.
- 26:08I think.
- 26:09Yeah, yeah.
- 26:09If I don't.
- 26:10Yeah, this makes sense.
- 26:12Like, we went to Creede Colorado.
- 26:14Not to spot burn, but, like, his granddad was a G and he was.
- 26:19He was tying articulated stone flies.
- 26:21And, like, I was tying.
- 26:23I was already tying at the point, but, like, I was showing him, and I was.
- 26:27That was when I was new.
- 26:28And he was tying, like, crazy stuff, and he was like, we just saw each other's passion, and then he ended up passing away, unfortunately.
- 26:38Sometimes you have to die.
- 26:41And my buddy Rooker gave me that vice, and I had it for, I don't know, five years.
- 26:47Four or five years.
- 26:49And tied my best.
- 26:51My best flies on it.
- 26:52I think I tied it on Bob and.
- 26:54But, like, I just had that vise.
- 26:57I thought.
- 26:57I thought it had spirit in it, right.
- 27:00And I just.
- 27:01I think it got me where I am.
- 27:04And then he came out here.
- 27:05He never.
- 27:06He's never been to Montana.
- 27:08Whenever he came out here and he was just like, can I have my granddaddy's vice back?
- 27:15And I was like, yes, sir.
- 27:16And it got me where I am now.
- 27:18I'm on my own vise.
- 27:20I'm on Regal.
- 27:21I rip Regal hard, you know, Like, I'm not on any specific team, but, like, Regal's always just felt like home.
- 27:29I bet you have a purple Regal Vise.
- 27:31No, it's black and gold.
- 27:33Like, I like it.
- 27:34I like it really classic.
- 27:35I like something timeless.
- 27:37Got it.
- 27:38And so, you know, let's talk about, like, in the streamer game.
- 27:41I mean, you're working with one of the OGs, right?
- 27:43With Kelly, but golly, what a G.
- 27:46Yeah.
- 27:46But tell me about, like, you know, some of the people that have influenced you kind of tying on YouTube or.
- 27:51In person and, like, inspirational tires to me are Mike Schultz, obviously, Andre Andresson, but you don't see enough of his stuff anymore.
- 28:03But he's just, like, really crispy.
- 28:07So Charlie Craven, for sure.
- 28:12Mike Schmidt, Rich Strolis.
- 28:16I like Josh Varner.
- 28:17He's a sleeper.
- 28:21Golly.
- 28:21There's so many to name.
- 28:23But at the same time, though, I think I've tied with or within the vicinity of everybody.
- 28:31I've learned from that.
- 28:32I watched at this point in my life, which is really cool.
- 28:37I thought about that the other day whenever I was, like, coming on your show.
- 28:41I was like, that's probably going to be a question, you know, and, like, this is something I've just been thinking about in general.
- 28:48Even if you didn't have me on, like, I think I've tied with everybody I've learned from at this point, which is crazy.
- 28:55Or like, I haven't tied with Kelly, but I.
- 28:57He's my boss now, which is nuts.
- 29:00Yeah, but I mean, it's kind of nuts, right?
- 29:02If you go to Bobbin the hood, you know, and you're in the streamer game, it's.
- 29:05You can probably leave there having tied with 85 or 90% of the people you follow, Right?
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:09Like that.
- 29:10Yeah.
- 29:10Russ Maddin, Blane Chocklett.
- 29:12I mean, I can name them off, but like I've talked about, I've.
- 29:14I'll.
- 29:15I've tied with them at this point, which is cool.
- 29:19Like, it doesn't mean anything.
- 29:21Like, I tied beside you.
- 29:22Like, what's that mean?
- 29:23But I learned from you, I guess.
- 29:25Yeah, that's everything.
- 29:27So, you know, other than kind of the artistic proportionality and streamers, I mean, you know, is there anything else that kind of like said, you know, I don't want to fish midges.
- 29:35I want to go fish meat.
- 29:37Yeah.
- 29:39Like, I'm a big nymph.
- 29:41I got big nymph energy.
- 29:42But like, I just want to get him on some honking junk, you know, I want to like, I want to make him eat.
- 29:49Is this something forceful about it?
- 29:51It's predatory and this is more aggressive, I guess.
- 29:55But like, at the same time, I'll bobber fish with the best of them.
- 29:59Yeah.
- 29:59I do think there's something different between like.
- 30:02Marvin, go ahead.
- 30:03Now that I'm out here, though, sorry to interrupt, but like, I wanna.
- 30:07You're.
- 30:08You're gonna see me on some dry fly games soon.
- 30:12The dry fly fishing stuff is good, but you know.
- 30:14Yeah, I think it's interesting.
- 30:15Right, but they actually eat them out here, though.
- 30:17Yeah, but I mean, I think it's interesting too because dry fly in some ways is like a variant of streamer fishing in the sense when they're on it, you know?
- 30:25Yeah, exactly.
- 30:26Because, I mean, I think there's a difference between accidentally catching a big fish on a nymph.
- 30:31Right?
- 30:32Yeah.
- 30:32And like targeting a big fish on a dryer.
- 30:35A streamer.
- 30:35I got you.
- 30:36Yeah, exactly.
- 30:37Yeah.
- 30:38I mean, you said it best.
- 30:40Yeah.
- 30:40Super duper cool.
- 30:41So, you know, it's interesting.
- 30:42I told you before we started recording.
- 30:44I know.
- 30:44You thought we were recording the kind of.
- 30:45The pre roll, right?
- 30:46Yeah, that pre roll was my best.
- 30:49That's the best thing I've ever said.
- 30:51Though I was surprised.
- 30:53You.
- 30:53I.
- 30:53Rob, when you called me, I thought we were recording, so I was like, I was on my game.
- 30:58Now I felt like I'm off my game.
- 31:00No, you're good.
- 31:00But, I mean, no, you gotta.
- 31:02You gotta.
- 31:03You gotta figure out a way to get that on there.
- 31:05Well, I don't know.
- 31:06I don't have that kind of magic.
- 31:07But what I would put in this is that this.
- 31:10Lost in the.
- 31:10It's in the void.
- 31:11Is lost in the void.
- 31:12But what I would say.
- 31:13Yeah, but what I would say, though, is, you know, we'll bring you back and we can talk about patterns, right?
- 31:19We talk about the Thrasher and Agent Scully and all that.
- 31:22Kind of.
- 31:22Working on a couple more.
- 31:23I just got another one on called the Secret Shopper.
- 31:26Cool.
- 31:27Yeah, but.
- 31:28But, you know, kind of before we kind of touch a little bit on your streamer patterns, I was really kind of curious because I know you've been really deliberate in, like, designing your patterns and how long it's taking
- 31:39you to kind of dial them in.
- 31:40Talk to me a little bit about kind of your philosophy on streamer design.
- 31:45My philosophy on streamer design is, like, I tie something that I like, right?
- 31:51I think it looks good on the vise.
- 31:54I put it in the water, and if it swims.
- 31:57And then my favorite thing lately, like, I've got to the point where instead of me fishing it, I've been given it away to, like, dudes at the shop and, like, clients or whatever, and I'd rather them, like, get
- 32:13them or not get them, you know, and get more intel from somebody else fishing.
- 32:17Because I'm like.
- 32:17I'm kind of elitist in my.
- 32:19My own pattern, right?
- 32:21So I've been giving it a couple to the boys, and they've been swinging them and getting them.
- 32:26Is this, like.
- 32:27I don't know, but I'm a big profile guy.
- 32:30Like, I'm a big profile and color.
- 32:32Scheme and anything kind of in your materials philosophy.
- 32:37Materials is definitely a big thing with me because, like, I like how materials work against each other.
- 32:46That's what's made me the tier that I am today.
- 32:50It's like deer hair is buoyant.
- 32:52Laser dub sinks different other pattern.
- 32:56You know, just, like, seeing how, like, materials work against each other, I geek out on that.
- 33:02Like, something that, like, fights each other in the water, makes you have to do less as you're retrieving it.
- 33:10Guided in.
- 33:10Any kind of thoughts on articulation?
- 33:13Articulation is up to the guy.
- 33:16Like, Schultzy is a ripper on articulation.
- 33:20In my opinion, I think he's the most badass other than Blane, you know what I mean?
- 33:24But something in Mike Schultz, like, he's in that Woodsman, that one's got me intrigued.
- 33:30But like, at the same time, it's like, you know, Leech works on certain things and then how complicated we have to get, you know.
- 33:40But at the same time, it's cool when you get them on that, you know, and they want to eat big stuff.
- 33:45I want to eat a big meal at Taco Bell, you know, it's like the same concept, just a.
- 33:51A burrito grande for fish.
- 33:53Yeah.
- 33:54Sometimes, like if I have one shank, that might make somebody else hungry.
- 34:00So, you know, your first two patterns, you had the Thrasher and the Agent Scully.
- 34:04And they've been picked up by Umpqua.
- 34:05People can actually buy regular sizes and mini sizes now.
- 34:08But I thought it would be kind of cool because, you know, everybody that ties kind of dreams about getting their pattern picked up.
- 34:14And I was kind of curious if you could tell us a little bit about those two patterns and also talk about like, kind of what was it like and what did you kind of go through to get Umpqua
- 34:21to put them in the catalog?
- 34:22So.
- 34:22So uncle actually, this is kind of a funny story.
- 34:26Like, you know how it's like I've had a couple people, like, they were like, it's hard to get patterns on.
- 34:32Umpqua actually reached out to me, first of all, because I was just tying and having fun right.
- 34:39When I was.
- 34:40When I.
- 34:40Whenever I got into tying, I was just like, I was doing.
- 34:44Because I was like enjoying it.
- 34:47Like, literally it was making me smile.
- 34:49I created this.
- 34:50I caught fish on this, you know, and Umpqua hit me up and they were like, have you ever thought about doing a pattern or whatever?
- 34:59I was like, oh, I actually have a couple patterns.
- 35:02And then I had the.
- 35:05The Thrasher came about because it was Georgia State bird.
- 35:10The Brown Thrasher is their state where.
- 35:12Which people don't really realize is Georgia's Brown Thrasher.
- 35:17And I was like, brown trout, Brown Thrasher.
- 35:19I was like, that's a no brainer, right?
- 35:22So I was like, I sent that in with the Agent Scully.
- 35:25Agent Scully is like, the truth is out there.
- 35:28Keep searching.
- 35:29You know, like the X Files for those that are old enough to know.
- 35:33It's like.
- 35:34But it's always also, Scully is like sculpin.
- 35:38So I was like, keep searching.
- 35:39The truth is out there, you know.
- 35:41So I sent both of those patterns in.
- 35:43They like, they ripped I tied, you know, I was tying them to the tee.
- 35:48I tie everything to the seat.
- 35:51But they took them and I never looked back since.
- 35:55And now I'm working with them and I just got that secret shopper rig and hopefully we'll get micros coming soon.
- 36:04Very cool.
- 36:05And so for folks that don't know, you know, the Thrasher is your kind of your swim fly, right?
- 36:09Yeah, it's a swim.
- 36:11It's a definitely a swim fly.
- 36:12You can do weighted or unweighted.
- 36:16Agent Scully's.
- 36:17A little sculpting pattern, a little getter.
- 36:19But I've had people come in the shop, they called their personal best on my flies.
- 36:23It's been unreal.
- 36:25Yeah, that's pretty sweet, right?
- 36:27That's probably the second best thing to catch in a fish.
- 36:29Other fly catching fish on my fly is why I tie.
- 36:33Yeah.
- 36:35So when I bring.
- 36:36Bring really good tires on the podcast, always want to ask them to share some tying tips with our mere mortals.
- 36:42Right?
- 36:42Yeah.
- 36:43So kind of you gotta.
- 36:44Got a couple that you can kind of share with us that'll kind of help us up our game at the vice.
- 36:49Like, that's a good question, Marvin.
- 36:51But like, less is more.
- 36:55Like if you think it looks good, probably trim it down.
- 37:00I think that's.
- 37:00I want to leave it at that.
- 37:01I'm going to keep it simple and profile.
- 37:04Got it.
- 37:05And are you talking about profile in the round or profile from just the bottom two?
- 37:09I learned it from Mike Schmidt, the profile Rules of halves.
- 37:12I think that's my favorite this play.
- 37:15Rules of half.
- 37:15So it's like if you tie your tail in, your next material should be half of your tail, half of your body, half of your main body.
- 37:25It's rolls of half.
- 37:26So it makes a better profile.
- 37:27When it swims, you'll notice it.
- 37:30And so are you saying you just is that material or you're just saying size it up by a half.
- 37:35This material base.
- 37:36Like so if you're doing bucktail.
- 37:38So for instance, if you tie in a schlappen tail, right.
- 37:44Like, and then I'll do bucktail, half of that schlappenschleppedtail.Andthenonmymainbody,I'm half of the bucktail.
- 37:55It's just half of it.
- 37:57Just half everything.
- 37:58Got it.
- 37:58I don't know if that makes sense.
- 38:00Probably doesn't make sense to the people that don't tie.
- 38:03But like, you're just having everything to build a profile that tapers.
- 38:08It's a taper.
- 38:09Yep.
- 38:10I.
- 38:10I think I got it.
- 38:11And so you're.
- 38:12You're gonna you're gonna be stingy with the tips.
- 38:14I'll shake you down at bobbin when I see you for some more.
- 38:16I'm a ripper on the tips.
- 38:17So somebody asked me the other day, it's like, you don't, you don't do.
- 38:22You don't stack your stuff.
- 38:23It's like.
- 38:23No, I like it to be like how it should be.
- 38:26I pull out a little long fibers.
- 38:28And you can always trim out long fibers.
- 38:31Like, don't be scared to just like trim away stuff too.
- 38:34That's another good one.
- 38:35Yeah, just cut it down.
- 38:37And I bet you have some kind of nutty tying tool on your bench that most people don't use that you can't live without.
- 38:42You got something like that?
- 38:43Yeah, Switchblade comb from Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
- 38:48That's my favorite thing that I pull out.
- 38:50It's a.
- 38:51You know how you have to brush your stuff out?
- 38:52Yep.
- 38:53I have a switchblade comb and that's my favorite tool.
- 38:57It gives people a rowdy.
- 38:58That's pretty funny.
- 38:59Is it.
- 39:00Is it in a Ripley's Believe it or not case?
- 39:02Probably.
- 39:05I don't know, but probably.
- 39:07But it's just one of the.
- 39:08It's a switchblade knife style comb.
- 39:11And like, I love it because like whenever I flip it out, I just now have to trim, you know, it's.
- 39:17I know I need to cut away.
- 39:19Yeah, it just feels good in my hand.
- 39:21Yeah, that's the Fonzie, right?
- 39:22Didn't he have a switchblade comb in Happy Days?
- 39:24Yeah.
- 39:25Yeah.
- 39:25And look at.
- 39:26Look where he is now.
- 39:27Yeah.
- 39:29What about.
- 39:29So I also know too that, you know, really good tires are always tinkering.
- 39:35Do you have any kind of new materials on your bench that you're playing with?
- 39:37You want to share with listeners?
- 39:39Don't talk to me about new materials.
- 39:41I got.
- 39:42There's almost too much.
- 39:43So Kelly, Kelly has me ordering new materials of the shot.
- 39:48I've never even seen half the shit I've ordered.
- 39:51But Montana Fly Company, that peppered chenille is.
- 39:58I think, you know, it's another Mike Schultz, but they're doing that woodsman and he like, it's like a.
- 40:06It's a material that doesn't catch water, you know, so it shreds water, but still builds a big profile.
- 40:13That's what I like about it.
- 40:15It's like you can get a profile with less bulk and less cast, less heavy castability.
- 40:21Anything else in the candy shop, I mean.
- 40:27Oh, yeah.
- 40:28Galloup's fish feathers.
- 40:31Kelly Galloup has These fish feathers from MFC that are, they have, like, rainbow trout, brown trout, and, like, speckled trout.
- 40:40I would love the snot of them.
- 40:42It's making me, it's making me think about, like, color schemes differently.
- 40:47I love that.
- 40:48You know, just something different.
- 40:49Just like, get your, get you out of your rut.
- 40:53But other than that, like, I think that's about it.
- 40:59Like, spent fly fishing from Montana.
- 41:02They have a lot of, like, really good natural materials and stuff that I want to start dabbling with, but I want to start doing more space stuff now that I'm out here, you know?
- 41:14But, like, I think I'm, I don't know.
- 41:17I just been kicking my own game for a minute.
- 41:20I, I went from two beads to one bead.
- 41:22Does that make sense?
- 41:24First, the 3D, you know, the 3D HarelineHardline beads.beadsI'mbackonjustoneofthose.Idon'tknowifthatmattersanybody.
- 41:32So tell me.
- 41:33Tell.
- 41:33Just tell us why you made the, why you made the change.
- 41:36I, I, I was just looking at swim ability and stuff.
- 41:40I don't, I think you could do two still.
- 41:43But, like, I get it from Chad Johnson on the Slugo.
- 41:47I think I always go back to his Slugo.
- 41:49I think the Slugo is one of my favorite designs.
- 41:52Again, it's got some of the biggest fish in my boat.
- 41:55Chad Johnson at Arkansas, right?
- 41:58Yep.
- 41:59I don't know.
- 42:00Like, I just learned from everybody.
- 42:03Like, I've incorporated a lot into my, my own flies, you know, and I appreciate every time that I put anything into any of my flies that I've learned from.
- 42:12But, like, Johnnie, even Johnnie with the Kill Whitey, I tied his fly for the first time.
- 42:19What a, what a unit.
- 42:22Like, is this, people that before me that just got them.
- 42:26Yeah.
- 42:27Any, any maybe new adhesives or anything like that?
- 42:30No, not at all.
- 42:32I don't even use it.
- 42:33Use this glue is whatever it's like.
- 42:37Oh, speaking of that, that's a good question.
- 42:41So I don't use glue.
- 42:43Like, what's his name?
- 42:45James Hughes from Mike Schultz.
- 42:47I think he's Schultz Outfitters' head guide.
- 42:50Like, he uses glue heavy, and I like it.
- 42:54But, like, if you, I learned it from Mike Schmidt.
- 43:00He did that Chinese finger trap.
- 43:03That's the best thing I've ever seen.
- 43:06So whenever you put your articulation wire, like, back through your bead, you know, where you go back to your front hook.
- 43:12He did the Chinese finger trap, where it's like if it pulls, it tightens.
- 43:17And I, I stopped using glue at that point.
- 43:20I got You.
- 43:21So you're talking about the way he's wrapping the thread when he's wrapping down the wire.
- 43:25Oh, yeah, the wire.
- 43:26Like he goes wire down and he goes back up half and then down all the way back up half, you know, and then down half down all the way.
- 43:36And it makes it.
- 43:37Like whenever it pulls, it'll tighten.
- 43:40I don't know if that makes sense on paper, but, like, that just makes sense in my mind.
- 43:46I think it rips.
- 43:48Chinese finger trap.
- 43:50Very, very neat.
- 43:51And so, so, you know, you're.
- 43:53It's gonna.
- 43:54You're going to get acquainted with a cold Montana winter for the first time here in a few months.
- 43:59Kelly said I couldn't.
- 44:00He was like, you're never going to make it.
- 44:05So, you know, a lot of guys either go guide down in the Caribbean or go to South America, but I.
- 44:11Suspect I hope to one day I get to do that.
- 44:13Yeah, but just because I want to do it.
- 44:15Not just because it's cold.
- 44:16Yeah.
- 44:16But I also suspect that you're going to escape and do some shows in 2027.
- 44:21I'm ripping on shows.
- 44:22I'm ripping on shows, Marvin.
- 44:24Like, I've been doing more tying events than I've ever done in my life.
- 44:28Yeah.
- 44:28So where can, where can your adoring fans find you in 2027?
- 44:32I mean, you can find me any pop up.
- 44:35Just keep on my Instagram, Eric Hurst.
- 44:38But like, I'm doing Bobbin again.
- 44:40I got like, invited to Bobbin and that's.
- 44:42I think that's the biggest thing I have as of now.
- 44:45But I've just been popping with Grundin's.
- 44:47I've been like, I'm gonna do some stuff with Skwala.
- 44:52We're gonna do some stuff at the shop.
- 44:53Even at Galloups.
- 44:55I'm gonna get some stuff popping over there.
- 44:57You know what I mean?
- 44:57Yeah.
- 44:58So are you gonna go to the.
- 45:00I guess it's not the Atlanta fly fishing show.
- 45:01It's going to be in Athens this year.
- 45:03You're gonna be there.
- 45:04I mean, I hope so.
- 45:05I would love to be there.
- 45:06I don't have anything right now on record, but, like, I just, like, I wanted to say this on the air right now.
- 45:14I want.
- 45:15I just want to tie it.
- 45:15Everything I can tie out.
- 45:17Like, I just, like, all I have now is time.
- 45:20So I want to build that community.
- 45:23Very, very cool.
- 45:24And so, you know, all my show promoter friends and event planners.
- 45:27Hit Eric up on Instagram.
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:31Hit me up.
- 45:32Like I'm trying to rip.
- 45:35So.
- 45:35Well, I'll I'll be in Athens and I'll be at Bobbin.
- 45:38So we should get together and have a hamburger in Athens.
- 45:41And Bob, you're gonna be at Bob.
- 45:43And we're gonna rip again.
- 45:44Rip it back.
- 45:45I'm excited, dude.
- 45:47New location, you know, bigger show, longer show.
- 45:51Have you seen his new location or no?
- 45:53No, I haven't.
- 45:54Golly.
- 45:55I bet it's going to be.
- 45:56He's.
- 45:56He's probably trying to compete with Kelly.
- 46:00Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 46:02But I know, I know everything those guys do is just awesome.
- 46:05And it's.
- 46:07That's my second favorite shop other than Galloups.
- 46:10But.
- 46:10But I will say for Bobbin and you know, you will not find a higher concentration of fishy people tying anywhere in the country.
- 46:16Right.
- 46:17The coolest event in.
- 46:19If you could make it to Michigan in January and I think everybody should if you're in the tank.
- 46:25It's the coolest event I've ever been to.
- 46:27Yeah, I think that really is the coolest event I've ever been to.
- 46:31Like no lie.
- 46:32Yeah, it's super special.
- 46:33So before I let you.
- 46:34Yeah.
- 46:35Other than, you know, Kelly Galloup's gonna do that year round annual party.
- 46:43His.
- 46:43His thing was cool.
- 46:44I got the tie with Charlie Craven.
- 46:46Oh, very cool.
- 46:46That was crazy.
- 46:48Like.
- 46:49And Rich Strolis and Falconberry.
- 46:52That's pretty slick.
- 46:54Golly.
- 46:54I don't know.
- 46:55I'm just like, I'm geeking because like I've tied with everybody I looked up to.
- 46:59So I'm kind of like geeking out.
- 47:02Sorry to be so excited, dude.
- 47:04It's all good.
- 47:05Before I let you get back to the Vice this evening, is there anything else you want to share with our listeners that we haven't talked about yet?
- 47:13What I would like to share with the listeners is like just keep tying and keep connection and keep being positive and keep teaching.
- 47:25That's all.
- 47:26And having fun.
- 47:27And having fun.
- 47:28That's key.
- 47:29Yeah.
- 47:29Well, there you go.
- 47:30So what's the best way for folks to follow your adventures on the water at the vice or the best thing for.
- 47:35Yeah, the best thing to follow me right now is Eric Hurst, Instagram.
- 47:39This is E R I C H U R S T.
- 47:43Got it.
- 47:44And if they want to get on your boat for 2027, what should they do?
- 47:47770-313-0030 or contact Kelly.
- 47:53I'll get on with him eventually.
- 47:54Yeah.
- 47:54And I'll drop all that.
- 47:55I'll drop all that stuff in the.
- 47:56Show notes and I'm with Go Yeah, I with Galloup.
- 48:00And I love his team.
- 48:02His team is crazy.
- 48:03Nathan, all the guides.
- 48:05I mean, Jordan, I can't say enough about them all.
- 48:08I'm not even gonna start.
- 48:11Fair enough.
- 48:12Well, listen, we will.
- 48:13I appreciate you making time this evening, and we will definitely bring you back to talk about the Thrasher, the Agent Scully on an episode of the Butcher Shop soon.
- 48:21Yeah, I would love to.
- 48:22Like, is this good?
- 48:24Cause you're the first podcast I've ever done, like, professional podcast.
- 48:29Well, I'm.
- 48:29I'm.
- 48:29I'm honored to be the first guy.
- 48:32Yeah.
- 48:32Like, it means a lot to me, and I really appreciate the out of it.
- 48:35Oh, dude, it's my pleasure.
- 48:37Like, you made my heart smile.
- 48:38Oh, that's good.
- 48:39That.
- 48:40That makes.
- 48:41Makes it worthwhile.
- 48:42Like, all I.
- 48:43All I do is tie stuff on hooks and, like, to be recognized is amazing to me.
- 48:51But you.
- 48:51But, you know, Eric, I mean, I think that for.
- 48:53You know, when you find those people, like I was telling you, you know, a lot of what I try to do with the articulate fly is to, you know, help people get out there and, you know, have their
- 49:02story told.
- 49:03Right.
- 49:03Because it takes time to kind of build all that, you know, community.
- 49:06Yeah.
- 49:07I've been building my name forever.
- 49:08I beat myself down and up, you know?
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:11And it's just like.
- 49:13It's a grind.
- 49:14Like, anything is a grind, though.
- 49:15It's not even just this industry.
- 49:18It's just a tough.
- 49:19It's tough on this.
- 49:20On the creeks and the streets.
- 49:22Yeah, dude.
- 49:23Well, you know, if you want to be great at anything, it's.
- 49:25It's tough.
- 49:26That's.
- 49:26It's that simple.
- 49:28That's what they say.
- 49:29I'll keep rip.
- 49:29I'll keep ripping.
- 49:31Well, listen, I appreciate you making the time.
- 49:33Take care.
- 49:34All right.
- 49:34Thank you.
- 49:36Well, folks, we hope you enjoyed the interview as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.
- 49:39Don't forget to check out the links to all this episode sponsors in the show notes.
- 49:43Tight lines, everybody.
