Latest / Bible Chat Devotional / May 23 - Wisdom That Guides
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, May 20. 3rd wisdom
- 0:12that guides every single day you're making choices, big ones
- 0:15and small ones. Who to spend time with, what to
- 0:18do when nobody's watching, whether to say something or stay
- 0:22quiet, whether to take the easy path or the right one.
- 0:26And in the middle of all those decisions, there's a question
- 0:29worth asking. What are you actually valuing?
- 0:32What's guiding your choices? Because whatever you value most
- 0:36will shape the direction your life moves.
- 0:38Proverbs chapter 16, verses 16 and 17 are strikingly direct.
- 0:44How much better to get wisdom than gold?
- 0:47To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
- 0:50The highway of the upright is level.
- 0:52The path of the wicked is crooked.
- 0:54The comparison is between wisdom and wealth, and the verdict is
- 0:59clear. Wisdom wins, not because money
- 1:02is evil, but because wisdom is the thing that actually makes
- 1:05your life work. It guides your relationships,
- 1:08your decisions, your responses. Under pressure, gold can run
- 1:11out. Trends change, popularity
- 1:14shifts. But wisdom, the kind that comes
- 1:17from God, steadies your path in ways that nothing else can.
- 1:21And notice the image of the highway.
- 1:23The path of the upright is level.
- 1:25Not easy, necessarily, but level.
- 1:28There's a stability to it, a steadiness.
- 1:31The path of someone who ignores wisdom is crooked, full of
- 1:34detours, dead ends, consequences that pile up.
- 1:38You've probably already seen this play out in real life.
- 1:42The choices that seem like shortcuts often create more
- 1:45complications than they solve. The right path, the wise path,
- 1:50is often the harder one in the moment, but the more level one
- 1:52over time. Galatians chapter 3 verse 23
- 1:57gives us important context now. Before faith came, we were held
- 2:01captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming
- 2:03faith would be revealed. Before Jesus, the only way to
- 2:08try to get right with God was through perfect rule keeping and
- 2:12nobody could do it. It was exhausting and it left
- 2:15people trapped. But then Galatians chapter 4,
- 2:19verses four and five break open with good news.
- 2:22When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son,
- 2:25born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were
- 2:30under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
- 2:33God didn't just send a better set of rules.
- 2:37He sent his Son, and through Jesus, we aren't just people
- 2:40trying to perform well enough to earn favor.
- 2:42We are adopted, we belong to the family of God, we have a new
- 2:46identity, and from that place of belonging and love, wisdom
- 2:51becomes not a burden to carry, but a gift to receive and walk
- 2:54in. This changes the whole frame.
- 2:58You're not trying to be wise so that God will accept you.
- 3:01You're already accepted, already loved, already His, and wisdom
- 3:05is how you walk in the life He's given you.
- 3:08It flows from relationship, not from striving.
- 3:11So what does it look like practically?
- 3:13It might mean pausing before you react.
- 3:16It might mean asking God for guidance before you make a
- 3:19decision you'll regret. It might mean choosing the
- 3:22honest, harder conversation over the comfortable, avoidant one.
- 3:27It might mean standing out from the crowd, not to be different
- 3:30for the sake of it, but because you've chosen the level highway
- 3:33over the crooked path. And here's the beautiful thing.
- 3:37You don't have to generate that wisdom on your own.
- 3:40James chapter 1 tells us that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should
- 3:43ask God, who gives generously. You have access, ask.
- 3:48Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
- 3:51wisdom that is worth more than anything this world offers.
- 3:55Thank you for sending Jesus so that I am no longer trapped
- 3:58trying to earn your approval. But I'm freely loved as your
- 4:01child. Help me to value understanding
- 4:04over status and to choose the level path even when the crooked
- 4:081 looks easier. Guide me today in every choice,
- 4:12every conversation, every crossroads.
- 4:15I need your wisdom and I trust you to give it in Jesus name,
- 4:19Amen. What if the battles hitting your

- 5:29Proverbs chapter 16, verses 16 to 17 World English Bible How
- 5:35much better it is to get wisdom than gold?
- 5:37Yes, to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
- 5:42The highway of the upright is to depart from evil.
- 5:45He who keeps his way preserves his soul.
- 5:47Galatians, Chapters 3 to 4. World English Bible.
- 5:52Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the
- 5:55truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed
- 5:59among you as crucified? I just want to learn this from
- 6:03you. Did you receive the Spirit by
- 6:05the works of the law, or by hearing of faith?
- 6:07Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are
- 6:10you now completed in the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in
- 6:14vain? If it is indeed in vain, He
- 6:17therefore who supplies the Spirit to you, and does miracles
- 6:20among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by hearing
- 6:24of faith, even as Abraham believed God, and it was counted
- 6:28to him for righteousness. Know therefore, that those who
- 6:32are of faith are children of Abraham.
- 6:35The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles
- 6:38by faith, preached the good news beforehand to Abraham, saying,
- 6:42In you, All the nations will be blessed.
- 6:45So then those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful
- 6:49Abraham. For as many as are of the works
- 6:52of the law are under a curse. For it is written.
- 6:56Curse. It is everyone who doesn't
- 6:57continue in all things that are written in the book of the Law
- 7:00to do them now that no man is justified by the law before God
- 7:04is evident. For the righteous will live by
- 7:08faith. The law is not a faith, but the
- 7:11man who does them will live by them.
- 7:13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become
- 7:16a curse for us. For it is written.
- 7:19Curse it is everyone who hangs on a tree, that the blessing of
- 7:22Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,
- 7:26that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through
- 7:29faith. Brothers Speaking of human
- 7:32terms, though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been
- 7:35confirmed, no one makes it void or adds to it.
- 7:39Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring.
- 7:43He doesn't say to descendants as of many, but as of 1 to your
- 7:47offspring, which is Christ. Now I say this, a covenant
- 7:52confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came 430
- 7:56years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no
- 8:00effect. For if the inheritance is of the
- 8:03law, it is no more of promise, but God has granted it to
- 8:06Abraham by promise. Then why is there the law?
- 8:11It was added because of transgressions, until the
- 8:14offspring should come to whom the promise has been made.
- 8:17It was ordained through angels by the hand of a Mediator.
- 8:21Now a mediator is not between 1:00, but God is. 1.
- 8:24Is the law then against the promises of God?
- 8:27Certainly not. For if there had been a law
- 8:30given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness
- 8:34would have been of the law. But the Scripture imprisoned all
- 8:37things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ
- 8:41might be given to those who believe.
- 8:44But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law,
- 8:48confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed,
- 8:51so that the Law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ,
- 8:55that we might be justified by faith.
- 8:57But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
- 9:01For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- 9:06For as many of you as we're baptized into Christ have put on
- 9:09Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek.
- 9:12There is neither slave nor freeman.
- 9:14There is neither male nor female, for you are all one in
- 9:17Christ Jesus. If you are Christ S, then you
- 9:22are Abraham's offspring and heirs according to promise.
- 9:25But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no
- 9:29different from a bond servant, though he is Lord of all, but is
- 9:32under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the
- 9:35Father. So we also, when we were
- 9:38children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles
- 9:42of the world. But when the fullness of the
- 9:45time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the
- 9:49law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we
- 9:52might receive the adoption of children.
- 9:55And because you are children, God sent out the spirit of his
- 9:58Son into your hearts, crying, ABBA Father.
- 10:01So you are no longer a bond servant, but a son, and if a
- 10:04son, then an heir of God through Christ.
- 10:09However, at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage
- 10:12to those who by nature are not gods.
- 10:15But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known
- 10:18by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable
- 10:22elemental principles to which you desire to be in bondage all
- 10:26over again? You observe days, months,
- 10:29seasons, and years. I'm afraid for you that I might
- 10:32have wasted my labor for you. I beg you, brothers, become as I
- 10:36am, for I also have become as you are.
- 10:39You did me no wrong, but you know that because of weakness in
- 10:42the flesh, I preached the good news to you the first time, that
- 10:47which was a temptation to you in my flesh you didn't despise nor
- 10:50reject, but you received me as an Angel of God, even as Christ
- 10:54Jesus. What was the blessing you
- 10:56enjoyed? For I testify to you that if
- 11:00possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to
- 11:03me. So then have I become your enemy
- 11:05by telling you the truth. They zealously seek you in no
- 11:08good way. No, they desire to alienate you
- 11:12that you may seek them. But it is always good to be
- 11:15zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you,
- 11:20my little children, of whom I am again in travail, until Christ
- 11:23is formed in you, but I could wish to be present with you now
- 11:27and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
- 11:31Tell me you that desire to be under the law.
- 11:33Don't you listen to the law. For it is.
- 11:35Written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant and one
- 11:40by the free woman. However, the sun by the servant
- 11:43was born according to the flesh, but the sun by the free woman
- 11:47was born through promise. These things contain an
- 11:50allegory, for these are two covenants. 1 is from Mount Sinai
- 11:55bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
- 11:58For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and answers to the
- 12:01Jerusalem that exists now. For she is in bondage with her
- 12:04children, but the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the
- 12:09mother of us all. For it is written.
- 12:11Rejoice, you barren who don't bear, break out and shout, you
- 12:15who don't travail. For the desolate have more
- 12:18children than her who has a husband.
- 12:20Now we brothers as Isaac was, are children of promise.
- 12:25But as then he who was born according to the flesh
- 12:28persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also
- 12:31it is now. However, what does the Scripture
- 12:34say? Throw out the servant and her
- 12:37son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of
- 12:40the free woman. So then, brothers, we are not
- 12:43children of a servant, but of the free woman.
