- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me, covering One Piece
- 0:12episodes three seventy four, three seventy five, and three seventy six. Our
- 0:18Bodies vanish, the morning sun shines on the nightmarish island and not out of
- 0:25danger yet orders to annihilate the straw Hat crew and it repels everything Kuma's pawpaw
- 0:34power. In these episodes we finally see Maria taken down. It turns out
- 0:42he bit off a little bit more than he could chew. And then we
- 0:49get to see the paw paw power, which I have a lot of questions
- 0:53about. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone. I am
- 1:15Natasha. Thank you very much to the One Piece crew for commissioning this episode
- 1:21and for your patience. I had to postpone from yesterday. I am really
- 1:25excited, though, guys, you know there's been all kinds of issues with
- 1:27the dogs and having to keep them separate. Right now, I have Pippin
- 1:32in the room and he has passed the fuck out because I took him out
- 1:36for a bunch of excitement on the town this morning when I was running errands.
- 1:41But pretty soon and by that I mean, in like a few weeks,
- 1:45I think two, maybe three, I think we may have found somewhere
- 1:51for Sam fingers crossed. It's not a guaranteed thing yet, but I think
- 1:57that we're going to be able to have a little bit more order and less
- 2:02chaos coming up, which would be lovely anyway. So let's get to these
- 2:09episodes. I y'all, what happens is honestly, like kind of hysterical to
- 2:19me because I was telling y'all how intimidating I found Maria's power and then it's
- 2:27sort of low key turns out he can't even really do it, and I'm
- 2:34not even mad, Like I feel like that if I had been in a
- 2:38different mood when I watched the first of or was the second of these episodes,
- 2:44I guess I may have been more irritated about the fact that there was
- 2:50so much build up and then it turns out it doesn't really work. But
- 2:55I kind of enjoy the fact that it's a little bit of an anti climactic
- 3:01situation after all, especially because we've got Kuma sort of picking up the slack,
- 3:07and I know the point is supposed to be, like, oh,
- 3:10we finally finished with Maria and I can't believe that we have to face this
- 3:15other asshole after everything that we've already been through. But really, for me,
- 3:21what it's sort of feeling like is more I we didn't get the fight
- 3:29I was expecting from Maria, so Kuma has to show up in order for
- 3:35there to feel like something happened, you know what I'm saying. So anyway,
- 3:39all right, let's start with the first of these four because I was
- 3:43sort of puzzled when the title of this is our Bodies vanished and the other
- 3:47episode there had been a moment where it looked like people's bodies were actually just
- 3:53straight up gone, and I thought that was what was happening here. But
- 3:58it turns out that what this is referencing is the fact that the sun is
- 4:04coming up and it's causing people's bodies to dissipate, even though they are getting
- 4:13their shadows back, and that should be impossible now. And um, I
- 4:18really enjoyed the surprise of the fact that everybody thought we're in the clear end
- 4:25it turns out they're not. And I say this, like, you know,
- 4:30there's there's some rules that were laid down, and it appears at first
- 4:34like we're bucking those rules. But I just enjoy this the like shock value
- 4:41of everyone sort of believing one thing and it turning out to not quite exactly
- 4:46work out the way they thought initially. Um, so we start off three
- 4:53seventy is it three seventy three? I think, Um, And you guys,
- 5:00I can't tell you how much of a Dodo bird I felt. There's
- 5:03that pirate captain whose whole thing is that she proposes to people like the moment
- 5:09she meets them. And I didn't fucking realize that this woman's shadow is,
- 5:16of course in that Pig Zombie, which I don't know how I missed it,
- 5:24and my fucking brain took so long to catch on because at one point
- 5:31her men are calling her Lola, and I'm like, oh, Lola,
- 5:36that's weird. I thought that was the name of the pig Zombie. They're
- 5:42both named Lola. That's weird, and they do seem kind of similar.
- 5:46What's going on with that? You guys? It was like I had never
- 5:49seen the show. It was like I didn't know what like, it took
- 5:54so long for me to remember, And I think what sort of surprised me
- 5:59was the fact that Lola is not like the name of the person who has
- 6:05the shadow isn't usually what they call the zombie, so I think that's sort
- 6:12of what was throwing me off, you know. It's not like they call
- 6:15Ors Lofy. They call him Oors. And the little guys that are like
- 6:20um squirrel creatures, it's a they're they're called like I keep wanting to say
- 6:29flotsam and jetsam, but that's the name of the eels that are Ursula's sidekicks.
- 6:32But they're called like Havoc and Mayhem or something right like something that is
- 6:40not the name of the people whose shadows they are. In other words,
- 6:43So I don't know why, in particular, the zombie pig was called by
- 6:48the same name as the captain, But I do find it really funny that
- 6:54like she was called by the same name, and it genuinely seems like as
- 7:00long. She says something at one point about how they've been hiding in the
- 7:06shadows for what two years, it was a long time, and trying to
- 7:15figure out a way to get their shadows back, and Maria has assured us
- 7:18that once a shadow is out of somebody's body for long enough, it begins
- 7:26to lose any trace of that person's personality. Well, I present Lola because
- 7:32that pig was pretty much Lola's personality, like Squared and I that's a pretty
- 7:46big exception to this rule, is all I'm saying. And my head canon
- 7:49for this is if you have a really strong personality, it never quite goes
- 7:58away. So I liked to think Ores would never have stopped being like Lufy,
- 8:05no matter how much Maria assured everybody. Give him some time and he'll
- 8:09be completely under my control. My head cannon is that would literally never actually
- 8:16happen. That's what it's supposed to happen, and that's what would happen with
- 8:20most people, but those who are a little bit fucking nuts, it doesn't
- 8:26actually ever occur. That's my head cannon, and I'm sticking to it.
- 8:33Sarah him says the Risky Brothers, right, and I do think that's their
- 8:37name. Best guess the shadows that got put into animal Frankensteins, just go
- 8:41with the shadows names since the original body wasn't a person with their own name.
- 8:48Okay, I see what you're saying. Never like, so you're saying
- 8:54the Risky Brothers was the name of the brothers in life Okay, I don't
- 9:00remember did we meet them. I think I see where you're going, and
- 9:03I think that we did meet them. I'm just having trouble remembering. And
- 9:07Sarah from says, at least she figured it out. Real. Lola isn't
- 9:11nearly as pushy as her shadow. That's true. She takes no for an
- 9:13answer. In fact, she takes a tally of how many times she gets
- 9:16no. That's how much she takes it for an answer. And also I
- 9:20want to tell you because like if you're listening and you're like, what the
- 9:22fuck was that noise? This is my headphones, which are like so sam
- 9:28ate my good headphones, and I just happened to have these headphones around to
- 9:33use as an emergency. They are the creakiest, like it sounds like a
- 9:39haunted house. I mean, what the fuck? So I ordered a secondhand
- 9:46pair that was like the ones I used to have. They arrived and they're
- 9:50fucking busted like their secondhand they said like new, No they're not. So
- 9:56they're currently winging their way back to the cellar and I still have to make
- 10:01do with these for a little bit longer. Very cranky about it, but
- 10:05forgive me if I ever like have to lift one of the earpads to scratch
- 10:07an ear or something. It sounds like I'm pushing open several old wooden doors
- 10:13on a ship. So anyway, this, uh, this like all we
- 10:22have like the long drawn out here go the shadows into Maria and just watching
- 10:26him kind of inflate. He gets bigger and bigger. It's all even more
- 10:33exaggerated, of course than it was with Lufy, because remember he looked like
- 10:39a completely different person basically, and it's not Maria doesn't undergo that dramatic a
- 10:46change, but it's still at least his size, and everybody's running away from
- 10:56him. At one point, he like looks like he's gonna punch at somebody,
- 11:05and he like collapses. He just collapses, like face first, and
- 11:09he manages to stand up, and he manages to continue intimidating everybody. But
- 11:16there's a real sense of this is not the way he's supposed to be right
- 11:26now, Like do you know what I'm saying, Like you see him taking
- 11:30all these shadows, and you're ready for him to really start a fight,
- 11:33And what it feels like is somebody trying to yank on the chord to a
- 11:39lawnmower and they're doing it over and over and it's just not quite catching.
- 11:43He's like attempting to fight, and he's got a look in his eye like
- 11:48he's full of rage and he's gonna go for it, but his attacks all
- 11:54sort of fall short and he seems really clumsy, and everything about this is
- 12:00like much different than I was expecting. And then we have a big moment
- 12:09with Lola talking to her crew and as the sun is coming up, everybody
- 12:16understandably begins to flee and they're just like, yeah, all right, well
- 12:24game over. I guess the fucking we lost and he's got our shadows and
- 12:31there's no way they're beating him. So I'm out. And Lola stops and
- 12:37her crew is continuing to run and they notice she isn't coming with them,
- 12:41and they turn around and they're like, what's the deal. You've got to
- 12:45go. We can't beat this guy, and you know that, right,
- 12:50and Lola is this is one of those those sorts of things. The show
- 12:58has done this before, and it really really depends on the situation whether I
- 13:03am feeling it at all, because there are times where it's like, I'm
- 13:05going to face this guy no matter what, even if it kills me.
- 13:09And it's meant to be really moving and like they're being brave, but for
- 13:13me, it feels really foolhardy and selfish and sometimes like you're just asking for
- 13:18somebody to step in and save you, which I just think is really rude.
- 13:22With this, though, it really did seem like she was going,
- 13:24look, all of these other people have stepped in and decided to go for
- 13:30it, and it's like, in large part on our behalf, and I
- 13:35just don't feel right about leaving them to do it all by themselves and running
- 13:41and hiding. There's a bunch of people over there who are also missing their
- 13:46shadows and also at risk of dying if the sun hits them. And they're
- 13:48still standing there and they are still unafraid, And I love when she says
- 13:54unafraid. She says they're completely fearless. The camera goes to oos Up,
- 14:00whose mouth is hanging open by like four feet, with his eyes wide it
- 14:05out in fear, and his tongue jutting out and his fists clenched because he's
- 14:09utterly terrified. It was a real nice touch to have her say utterly fearless,
- 14:13and then like jump onto him, and yeah, Lola is basically like,
- 14:20you know, at this point, I have got to face it.
- 14:24I can't just let them go into this and run off and hide and give
- 14:33up. If they think they can win this, you know what, I'm
- 14:39gonna stay with them, and they seem pretty confident. I think if anybody
- 14:45can win this, they can. And if I'm wrong, oh well that's
- 14:48a bet I'm gonna make. And I feel pretty good about it. And
- 14:54when all of them are like, well, do you want us to stay,
- 15:00she says, I can't. I'm not making that decision for you.
- 15:03This is my decision to make for myself, and I am your captain.
- 15:07So what I want is for you to be safe. That's the point of
- 15:13Like, my job is to make sure my guys are all right. I
- 15:16can't tell you to stay here and risk it all. So this is what
- 15:22I'm doing. But you do what you need to do, and says I'm
- 15:28putting my faith in them and I won't falter. And like I said,
- 15:33this doesn't always work for me. There's so many times that we have this
- 15:35sort of like I'm taking a stand moment that I feel kind of fall flat,
- 15:41and I think the fact that everybody else has lost their shadow, or
- 15:48not everybody, but you know a significant number of our friends have lost their
- 15:50shadows because they are all at risk the same way. That is what makes
- 15:58her staying feel significant to me and like it makes some sense. Granted,
- 16:03she doesn't have the powers and the fighting skills that our guys do, so
- 16:07there's still a part of me that's like, yeah, they're staying because they
- 16:11could maybe do something. I don't know that you can do something, but
- 16:15at least the like sort of immediate real threat here at this point is that
- 16:22the sun is coming up and they're in as much danger regarding that as she
- 16:30is. What I kept thinking about with this too, And nobody really like
- 16:37says anything about this, And I don't know if it's like it didn't occur
- 16:41to anybody or it was just going to be a little bit too bleak,
- 16:47But so this is what I was sort of thinking. Oh, I'm sorry,
- 16:49Gus in the chat, Oh, Saraphin first has agreed it does seem
- 16:55certain really strong personality Tree stick around, but they still end up having to
- 16:57obey Maria, but not always without question true. Gus says, Yeah,
- 17:02I don't think the personality of shadows ever goes away. It's meant to be
- 17:04that over time the shadows come completely under Maria's control, they still have the
- 17:08same mannerisms as their previous host forever. Oh okay, I thought that Maria
- 17:14said that he like, eventually that goes away, like specifically they kind of
- 17:19forget who they used to be entirely. But maybe I sort of interpreted that
- 17:25wrong. But the thing that I was sort of wondering if it was going
- 17:29to come up, and it doesn't, and I'm like, I'm fine with
- 17:33it not going this way because it would have, like I said, been
- 17:36kind of bleak, but I would have liked for somebody to mention it.
- 17:41The thing that I was sort of expecting to be put out there is that
- 17:48if the owner of a shadow dies, the shadow vanishes. And I was
- 17:55sort of wondering if we were going to get like a mass self sacrifice,
- 18:00that we were having a lot of people hanging around and hiding in the shadows
- 18:06hoping to get their own shadow back. Maria takes their shadows for power,
- 18:11and they realize that the one thing they can do to cause that to affect
- 18:19the power he has at all would be to sacrifice themselves so that their shadow
- 18:26was no longer there and he didn't have that power to draw on at all.
- 18:30Since the sun is like right here, I kind of expected somebody to
- 18:37mention it and like the way I would expect it to go were it to
- 18:42happen. If I were writing a fan fick in this universe and I was
- 18:45trying to be pretty like, you know, faithful to the overall tone of
- 18:51the stories, what I would do is have somebody be really heroic and noble
- 18:56proposing this sort of sacrifice and a bunch of people about to run into the
- 19:02sun, and then they're stopped by probably Zoro. I'm gonna go with probably
- 19:08Zoro being the one to stop them, because he'd be like insulted that they
- 19:14think that it's better for all of them to die because the straw Hats aren't
- 19:18up to the task. That's what I would do, But it doesn't really
- 19:23come up. And what we get more is the sorry Sarah m is saying
- 19:33wouldn't really have done much given the number of people there versus how many shadows
- 19:37Maria had. I guess that's true, but you could like he took a
- 19:41thousand shadows, right and when he takes them, they are all the zombies
- 19:52that were in Well, I guess, like, so what I'm thinking is,
- 19:57if he's got a thousand shadows, how many people does he have on
- 20:02the island. And we do see at one point a crew that's like on
- 20:04a ship and they have been just like trying their best to sail normally on
- 20:12their ship, but they're not on Thriller Bark anymore. And yet their shadows
- 20:18are gone and they're not on the island. So all that to say,
- 20:26not everybody, not every owner of a shadow is present, But I don't
- 20:33feel like I've got a good idea of where everybody is and what's happening to
- 20:38all of them in terms of the rest of the owners, because if he's
- 20:42got a thousand shadows, there's a thousand people somewhere spread out somehow, and
- 20:48that one ship is the only place that we see that isn't like on the
- 20:52island. But anyway, I just thought that me be it would be mentioned,
- 21:00and you know, there would be a thing with it, and it
- 21:03doesn't really come up at all whether or not it would have made a particular
- 21:08difference. I just expected it to be addressed because everybody starts like steaming and
- 21:17and you know, getting hit by the sun and begins to smoke. So
- 21:21we're right on the edge of a bunch of folks completely dying, and it
- 21:26seemed like the moment for that to be brought up. But anyway, so
- 21:32this is Lufy. He is doing his third gear and he's he's using jet
- 21:40bazuka, which he pushes at Maria's stomach a bunch of times using jet bazuoka,
- 21:48and the shadows begin to just leak out of his mouth. And I
- 21:52gotta tell you, guys, the imagery of these shadows was pouring out of
- 22:00his mouth upward instead of like pouring down his front the way that like a
- 22:04liquid would do. Is very off putting. I kept thinking about a full
- 22:11metal alchemist and you know, you know what I'm talking about, and how
- 22:17like disturbing that imagery was. And this is sort of what like, this
- 22:23is like a really tamed down version of that. It's all all the edges
- 22:32have been sort of smoothed here, but it still brought it to mind.
- 22:38So everybody's beginning to realize that More is like out here taking all of this
- 22:45power, acting like he can just wield it. But it's too much for
- 22:52him. He's starting to like bleed from his eyes and nose. It is
- 22:56not it's not looking good for him. Lufy prepares to attack again, and
- 23:04Maria yells brick bat and we get all of the shadows piling up around Lufy
- 23:11and creating a box with a lid that just slams shut on him, which
- 23:15I did think was actually kind of dope looking. And Maria is like,
- 23:22all right, now, I've got you in the box and I'm just gonna
- 23:23crush you. And he punches the box, which, of course the box
- 23:27is like on the side of a building, so when he punches it,
- 23:32he takes out this huge chunk of the building. Everybody is like, obviously,
- 23:38there is no way in hell that Lufy survived that. But because we
- 23:45know that Lufy is a rubber, I was not worried about this in particular.
- 23:48He like falls, We see him in the box and his arm is
- 23:52still just sticking out of it, but the box is still there, and
- 23:56Maria stomps on it and calls him a cocky little snot, and I was
- 24:03sort of like, that's fair, you know, I don't know if I'd
- 24:08say that Lufy is cocky exactly, but I one can understand somebody else seeing
- 24:15him as cocky. So, like I said, everybody is watching this thinking
- 24:22Lufy's dead. Maria is monologuing about how Lufy needs to learn his place in
- 24:29the world. Nails that stick out get hammered down, and then we get
- 24:37a pretty good moment. I thought of Lufy emerging from the box. He
- 24:44is still able to stand up, and he is still trying to channel third
- 24:48gear, like his body is doing that weird shiny thing that it does,
- 24:55and he says, may maybe I am a nail that sticks out, but
- 25:03I'm not gonna let anybody hammer me down. And I actually really liked that.
- 25:10You know, there's a lot of lines that are meant to be like
- 25:14I'm I'm not giving up, and I'm gonna use whatever you said and sort
- 25:22of reverse it again. That don't work, and I just thought this one
- 25:26really did. It's one thing to be like, I'm never gonna lose,
- 25:32but that's not even what he's saying. He's just like, maybe I'll lose,
- 25:36but that doesn't mean I've been hammered down, which is a different thing.
- 25:40And I just sort of liked it, and Maria starts laughing and it's
- 25:44like, wow, I can tell that you believe that, which is almost
- 25:48impressive because you seem to think you're indestructible. And Lufy says rubber bounces back,
- 25:57and I was like, true, that's also a pretty good line.
- 26:03Maria gets very angry at this, so Lufy is like powering himself up again
- 26:11and saying, I am gonna make you spit all of these shadows out.
- 26:15Don't even worry about that part of it. And he does that thing where
- 26:21he like blows up his forearm. And this is such a huge moment because
- 26:32we have us up who had watched Lufy used this technique before and then become
- 26:37utterly paralyzed and like almost a sitting duck. And he's watching Lufy do this
- 26:42thing again as he's like blowing his arm up and it goes into his body,
- 26:47and he's realizing if he does this, yeah, he may beat Maria,
- 26:52but like, if he doesn't beat him with this, he's just going
- 26:55to be useless. So Lufy uses giant jet shell and pounds forward directly into
- 27:06Maria's sternam basically like a spot where if you were to punch a person,
- 27:11they'd probably vomit, and Maria starts to lose a bunch of shadows, but
- 27:15he puts his hands over his mouth and he's trying to hold them in place.
- 27:21And then we have an interesting moment that I loved, which is Lowly
- 27:26yelling to her shadow, trying to remind it who she is and that it's
- 27:32a part of her. I loved this, you guys, I really did
- 27:37like it. Didn't like the connection that people have to their shadows. I
- 27:44wouldn't have minded a little bit more conversation about the lore regarding how all this
- 27:52works, because I do feel like this is such a fascinating concept, and
- 27:57I understand that probably what was going on is that Odah doesn't want to box
- 28:03himself in too much, so he lets things be vague and that way he
- 28:07can just pull out whatever, and that makes total sense. But I wouldn't
- 28:11mind seeing this sort of idea being handled by somebody like Brandon Sanderson, for
- 28:18example, somebody who's like, all right, that magical system, I'm gonna
- 28:22give you so much magical system, like just to see what he'd do with
- 28:26it. And all of her guys, when they see her like standing in
- 28:32the sun calling to her shadow, they come out and they start to yell
- 28:37at her that they're not going to let her die out here, and she
- 28:41reprimands them by not saying I'm doing this, but by going, you guys
- 28:47can't tell me that you don't feel it. They're right there. Which I
- 28:52loved that so much that she's just like, okay, dudes, maybe if
- 28:57we all got on the same page here, we could do something about this.
- 29:02You know, there's just a sort of like impatience and an instinct that
- 29:06she's going with. And soon we've got all of the guys like on the
- 29:10sidelines. I should mention again, weird thing with this show. You can
- 29:15have like a woman pirate captain. You can never have women pirates. It's
- 29:22like, I don't get what that's about. The One Piece crew is like
- 29:25the only crew we have ever seen that has any women as members of the
- 29:32crew. Otherwise it's a woman captain and no men anywhere or no women anywhere
- 29:37to be seen. It's only men. I don't know what that's about,
- 29:40but I gotta be honest, I'm sort of getting over it. I'm like,
- 29:45come on, but anyway, all of the dudes begin to yell for
- 29:49their shadows, and it seems like it's kind of working. Maria is struggling,
- 29:55and all of the one piece crew that is like are the straw hat
- 30:00crew. They are standing around watching this with smiles on their faces, like
- 30:03they really believe that this is working, in that it's accomplishing something. And
- 30:11then Loofy is like, all right, you know what, I'm gonna jump
- 30:15in on this as well and try and like call my shadow back. So
- 30:21he launches another assault on Maria using third gear, punches Maria back and he
- 30:29hits a huge chunk of the building which begins to collapse on top of him.
- 30:33Meanwhile, Loofy, who had been on third gear, this attack knocks
- 30:37so much of the windown of him that he goes flying through the air like
- 30:41an inflated balloon that you like, haven't sealed off, you haven't tied it,
- 30:45and you just let it go and it just goes like through the air.
- 30:51That's basically what Loofy does here. He goes flying and it's a very
- 30:56like floppy, weird little moment. It's very funny to me because the majesty
- 31:03and SloMo of Maria falling when it is you know that's pictured right beside Lufy's
- 31:11sort of sad little flop. I found that very very funny. So Maria
- 31:18is on the ground and all of these shadows are like pooling in his mouth.
- 31:23It looks like he is right on the edge of losing all of them,
- 31:30and Maria is saying to himself, you little bastard, I'll show you
- 31:36the real nightmares that are waiting for you in the New world, which I
- 31:41don't know what he means by that, because he's on the edge when he
- 31:45says it. And then as soon as he's done talking, all of the
- 31:49shadows begin to like pour out of his mouth. It's like a geyser.
- 31:56And this is when there's a huge, huge crack in a part of the
- 32:01building that had been shielding everybody from the sun, and the sun starts to
- 32:07hit the people whose shadows are on their way back but have not quite made
- 32:15it yet, and they begin to disintegrate. And I'll tell you what,
- 32:20it's pretty freaky. I didn't believe for a moment that they were actually going
- 32:25to disintegrate and die. You know, of course not, but I was
- 32:30really surprised that the shadows don't immediately fly back into them. It takes it
- 32:37a little bit for this to happen, you know. So, yeah,
- 32:42the eventually we find out that like the principle that was proposed by Maria regarding
- 32:50Oars, where he's like, if I can make his shadow into a sphere
- 32:53a ball, I can force Oars's body into a ball also, which then
- 33:00he yells Or's ball, which is never going to not be funny. But
- 33:06basically what they're asserting is that because the shadow was still the full size of
- 33:13the people that it was stolen from and like had their shape, we have
- 33:19the shadows restoring what had started to vanish because the body had to obey the
- 33:29shape the shadow enforced on it. Which sure, you wouldn't even have to
- 33:35really explain that to me, and I would be mostly like, I accept
- 33:38it, you know, to be honest. Gus says, I forget if
- 33:45it was this group of episodes or the last group. But Maria was explaining
- 33:47that he used to be just like Loofy, full of dreams and ambition,
- 33:52but when he went into the New World, his whole crew was killed.
- 33:54That's why he primarily uses zombies now instead of living people. It might have
- 33:59been right before he started absorbing all the shadows, Yeah, it was sort
- 34:02of he doesn't get into like what happened. He says, if I recall
- 34:08if they'd all just been zombies from the beginning, which is sort of a
- 34:15wild like I get what he means, you know, but it doesn't It's
- 34:21like that's not better, you get that, right, But yeah, this
- 34:28is like a I don't know, I just yeah, Gus is saying he's
- 34:34basically like a reflection of Lufi who lost his crew and became jaded, depressed,
- 34:38etc. I would love to know what the fuck Maria was doing with
- 34:43his powers before he decided to go down this like weirdo path. But this
- 34:50is when we get in at the next episode, the montage of all of
- 34:54these different people getting their shadows back, So we had that like on captain
- 35:00that we had met. We have a pretty wild moment with the girl who
- 35:07is a maid at that house, and she turns out to be the one
- 35:10who like hates plates and is the shadow that had been inside the movie star
- 35:17whose name I will literally never remember or get right. This was a weird
- 35:22one because it was like the I think the only person that we hadn't already
- 35:27met, you know, the captain we had at least seen, but she
- 35:30is like working for this guy who is I was thinking that there was a
- 35:36sort of like romantic thing between them, but then I think his wife is
- 35:39mentioned, so it's supposed to just be that she's like just a straight up
- 35:45servant. And I would love to know how her shadow was stolen, like
- 35:51what happened that she was even able to get away and then come and get
- 35:53this job here. But she is expecting that, like he is going to
- 35:59fire her for reasons that were weird. She breaks a bunch of his dishes
- 36:02because she's so startled at the fact that her shadows back, and then when
- 36:07he doesn't fire her for that, she's like deeply grateful onas going bar so
- 36:14low, honestly. And then we go back to all of our friends who
- 36:19are realizing that they aren't dead, even though it seemed for a moment like
- 36:23it was completely game over. I do really love Brooke, especially standing in
- 36:30the sun and just being like, well, god, damn, I can't
- 36:35believe that we got on this other side of this, And just the slowness
- 36:40of him looking at his hand and then turning his face to the sun and
- 36:45his shadow pouring behind him. I just really appreciated this moment. Good for
- 36:50him. Meanwhile, this place is a fucking disaster, Like the whole building,
- 36:57it's shot to hell, and and I have to assume pretty much everybody
- 37:02is just going to completely abandon thriller bark Like, you know, we've got
- 37:07Absalom, and we have got what's his name, Hilden is it? I
- 37:15don't know what they're gonna do. Maybe they'll stay here, I'm not sure,
- 37:19but there's oars kinds this bit he is, so let's see him trying
- 37:29to find it here it is. Frankie says, does anybody have nicola?
- 37:34That wore me out? Sanji says all the creepy stuff and weird creatures in
- 37:37this place were an illusion, a false reality made by Maria and his crew.
- 37:45Now that he's been beaten, there's nothing left in this place. It's
- 37:50like we all woke up from the same horrible nightmare. Um, there's lots
- 37:57of actual zombie bodies. Those weren't an illusion. So what exactly is he
- 38:05saying was an illusion? I didn't really understand that, you know. It's
- 38:09like I wasn't getting like it's we don't go I don't think inside the house
- 38:19and see that all of the trappings inside, or the portraits and things like
- 38:25that, that those were illusions. Were they? I don't think? But
- 38:31anyway, we go for a moment to Absalom waking up and Lola is like
- 38:38right next to him, and he thinks that she's alive, but her shadow
- 38:43has left her, and doctor Hogback is there, and he is perfectly fine
- 38:49that both of them are unscathed, and Absalom says, what happened to me,
- 38:54to which Hogback says, I don't fucking know, Master Moria, though
- 39:00he's done. This place is completely trashed. It's the end of the line
- 39:07for us. So we have got to figure out what we are going to
- 39:10do because and I have slump starts getting real loud, and doctor Hogback is
- 39:16like, can you keep your fucking voice down? First of all, we
- 39:21can't let them know where we are because they will kill us or do something.
- 39:24And I'm not going to spend the rest of my life as a fucking
- 39:27washed up loser, to which Absalom says, what does that mean? And
- 39:35we cut away from them, and for the rest of this section don't see
- 39:38what they do. So I'm real curious about that bit. Gus says,
- 39:46what's so weird about that one, Oh the Maid, is that her real
- 39:51world personality seems nothing like sinjury. I'm pretty sure most of her personality as
- 39:55a zombie came from Cindury's body. I don't know, though, Saraphim says,
- 40:00I'm guessing that all the zombies and monsters and everything that seemed supernatural was
- 40:04just the result result of Maria's devil fruit. But that's not an illusion.
- 40:15I mean, I would argue that they are supernatural. It's just such a
- 40:19weird line in this world. It's like the same thing as Lufy being impressed
- 40:22that husup the Sniper King is a superhero when it's like, Lufy, you
- 40:28are a literal superhero, why are you impressed? But because it's like devil
- 40:31fruit, it doesn't count for whatever reason. So it's certainly to me the
- 40:37exact same thing. Literally, who cares, But I guess I don't know,
- 40:44though. It's just again, even if that were what he meant,
- 40:46that's not really the same as being an illusion. And he says, like
- 40:52all the creepy stuff has disappeared as the camera pans over the many abandoned zombie
- 40:58bodies all over the island, So I don't know, it doesn't really matter.
- 41:06I just found it sort of confusing. So at this point everybody is
- 41:14starting to celebrate. It's a real moment. And then Nami is like,
- 41:20do you hear that? And we have a moment where we go over to
- 41:28Kuma, who again is carrying a Bible. I keep forgetting about that weird
- 41:32aspect, and he is sitting and observing what's happening and getting orders about what
- 41:40to do, and he has been told to kill absolutely everybody on this island,
- 41:47to not leave anyone alive. I don't know what that's about. I'm
- 41:55really really curious if this is going to come up or because what is the
- 42:05point of killing all of these other people. It's one thing to just like
- 42:09say, okay, I need you to take out the straw hats, do
- 42:13whatever you need to do, and any sort of collateral damage is acceptable as
- 42:17long as they're killed. But that's not even the orders that he gets.
- 42:22It's too explicitly make sure that there's nobody left alive on the whole island,
- 42:30which is bizarre. I'm not understanding what the point is of this, and
- 42:35I should mention that once again, after this massive fight that Lufy has just
- 42:40gone through with his third gear. He is down for the count like there
- 42:45is nothing useful left in him at all, and essentially he's unconscious for all
- 42:51of this. So we then go to Kuma and there's a real slow pan
- 42:58as everybody's looking at him and impressed with how huge he is and becoming intimidated
- 43:05by the fact that even after everything with Maria, I can't believe we still
- 43:08have to deal with this guy. And then he looks at Zoro and he
- 43:15says, should the annihilation start with you? Which is a hell of a
- 43:20sentence, And Zoro, for his part, I think, does not fully
- 43:28understand what he's dealing with here. Nami tries to explain, and you know,
- 43:34I don't. I'm not saying that people don't believe her, but it's
- 43:38one thing to hear it, and it's another thing to see it. And
- 43:44he goes into this I think with a maybe she thinks he's very intimidating,
- 43:50but I am a better fighter than her, so what she would be worried
- 43:53about wouldn't necessarily bother me, I think. With sort of his attitude here
- 44:01and all of the guys in the background, by the way, have psyched
- 44:05themselves up a little bit because they are they just got past Maria, and
- 44:14they're sort of like, we got our shadows back, and you know what,
- 44:17you think, We're gonna lay down our arms now and be done with
- 44:21it. Fuck it, We're gonna go for this dude and take him down.
- 44:24Who cares. This is the one part where Lola is like, guys,
- 44:31have some sense. No, you're not. You can't beat him.
- 44:36What are you doing? Babes? I love y'all, And I was like,
- 44:38gonna stand fast when it came to our shadows, We don't. This
- 44:42doesn't need to happen. This is not our fight. And I did kind
- 44:44of find that funny because I don't disagree with her at all, but it's
- 44:47just so like they have just got the reverse attitude of what she wants.
- 44:53And Zoro tells them all like, don't get involved with this. He pointed
- 45:00me out specifically, y'all saw it. So I'm going to handle this dude
- 45:07on my own. And he has a very unhappy sort of revelation here where
- 45:20the first attempt that he makes on Kuma. The reaction that Kuma has is
- 45:28so fast that Zoro barely gets out of the way before he's crushed under this
- 45:36guy's hand paw. I suppose he leaves such weird prince. He's got paw
- 45:45pads on the palms of his hands, and when he strikes out, multiple
- 45:52paw prints are like left all over the place. So Zoro gets hit,
- 46:00but his hits do fucking nothing, and Kuma is just warding them off with
- 46:07what seems to be his bare hands, and Namby off on the sidelines is
- 46:13like, I don't even get what his power is. What is he doing?
- 46:17Like what is this? And all of the other men are starting to
- 46:23see the pawpads and like figure out what's happening. It's all making a lot
- 46:29more sense because I couldn't figure out like the design on his clothes, and
- 46:32I was singing that there was like polka dots of various sizes, and I
- 46:37was thinking that it was sort of a fun design, and now I'm realizing,
- 46:39oh, it's just like the pauper, which does not make it less
- 46:43fun for the record, But what Kuma does too when he when he I
- 46:52won't say deflect, I guess is the word. He puts his hand up
- 46:57in response to Zoro's strike, and the strike instead of like being absorbed or
- 47:04bouncing straight back, goes sideways and slams into the building. These buildings have
- 47:10really taken a beating today, and he explains at this point Kuma I ate
- 47:16the paw paw fruit and became a paw palmed human. I do, deeply
- 47:24in my heart appreciate us up going. How can he say that with a
- 47:31straight face? That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard a menser.
- 47:38We even have a moment of Robin and like a thought bubble where she's imagining
- 47:45lots of kittens. It's pretty funny. And this is when this is when
- 47:58we have like every But he's starting to sort of chime in, being like,
- 48:01well, I don't see this, like how this would even work,
- 48:07And Frankie says, I don't take him very seriously. If he's just got
- 48:15like kit in powers, who cares, which Kuma apparently hears because he lashes
- 48:21out with his ability. Doesn't even turn his head, by the way,
- 48:25He just like sticks his hand out without even looking over. And Frankie goes
- 48:30down and it's rough, like it's a pretty solid hit. And what follows
- 48:37from here is basically Kuma attacking everybody and insulting them right after by being like,
- 48:46I had heard big things about you, but I'm not impressed. Everything
- 48:52I'm seeing is really mediocre at best. I don't get why anyone is impressed
- 49:00with you. And I loved especially when us Up us Up fires one of
- 49:09his like starble things at him, like a phoenix bomb or something. He
- 49:15says, the King of the Snipers steps up, a title you clearly gave
- 49:22yourself. That is devastating. That's a really like cold blooded insult. Damn,
- 49:36I mean, And it's weird too because you guys know, like when
- 49:39Kuma showed up, I was I was a little throne by the fact that
- 49:45he is so soft spoken. He's got a higher, softer voice than I
- 49:51would ever expect for a character that looks like this. So the fact that
- 49:59he is delivering these like verbal jabs on top of the physical SmackDown that he's
- 50:06laying on everybody, there's something extra savage about it. And I'm not really
- 50:13sure why, but it's there's like because his voice isn't even impassioned, you
- 50:21know, when he says everything, it's sort of flat, like he's bored.
- 50:27I think that's what's doing it is the sense of Wow. I really
- 50:34thought, Wow, you clearly gave that title to yourself, Like you know
- 50:38what I'm saying, it's just so dismissive. I really was sort of I
- 50:45was delighted by this, I'll be honest. Oh. In the chat,
- 50:50Gus says they don't want the information to straw Hat be another warlord to get
- 50:53out, because it's starting to make them look weak at this point, Sarah
- 50:57from since the government doesn't want any potential witnesses that, yeah, another of
- 51:00their war lords got taken out so soon after Crocodile, since they think it
- 51:02will make them look weak. Yeah, this makes sense. Okay, it's
- 51:08just still wild like all of them, come on, guys. But anyway,
- 51:14so Robin is like, I'm thinking this is deflected air because a regular
- 51:21physical attack wouldn't hit Frankie the way that that just did. And Kuma says,
- 51:28yeah, it's a shockwave and it can basically pierce through anything. Now,
- 51:37I just want to register my puzzlement because if you guys like were if
- 51:49you were tossing around ideas with your friends, let's say, and you were
- 51:53coming up with a list of weird superpowers that people could have, and the
- 52:00whole conceit was it's a devil fruit power. We have to name the fruit,
- 52:04and then we have to decide what the powers would include. And somebody
- 52:07came up with the paw paw fruit and said, like, you have animal
- 52:13paw pads on the palms of your hands, what would you think the associated
- 52:22power would be to that, like manifestation of the paw pad. And I'm
- 52:31not like saying that I dislike this. I'm saying that it feels like there
- 52:39was a much different sort of ability like appearance and name, like a different
- 52:47devil fruit name that would have gone better with this, the pawpaw fruit.
- 52:55And then it being like I displace air and create this like force in that's
- 53:05not doing it for me. It's they don't go together, you know what
- 53:14I'm saying. Like for me, when I think of pawads, I think
- 53:21of quiet. I think of an animal that's able to sneak, And it
- 53:28would be like if you had this ability that you could basically become soundless,
- 53:35and if especially if these appeared on your feet, that you would be able
- 53:39to like sneak up on people. So his ability to move really quickly.
- 53:45That would work for me because it's a much more exaggerated version of what I'm
- 53:52describing of just being able to like get around an enemy before they can notice
- 53:58you. But the pushing air at in this way, this doesn't feel like
- 54:07it goes for me. I find it bizarre. So at this point he
- 54:15starts stomping on the ground in a very sumo wrestler type style, and he
- 54:22says, I don't believe in mercy and does the paw cannon and he starts
- 54:25sending out what looks like bubbles and we see a real big one later,
- 54:35bubbles that are shaped like paws, and there's like tons of them flying pass
- 54:42or like cannonballs, and he's dodging all of them, gets right up against
- 54:46Kuma and slashes at Kuma's paw pads with his swords. Those swords land and
- 54:55they touch his paw pads and seem to like sink in, but they're really
- 55:00just pressing. There's no cutting happening, and he just shoves Zoro back,
- 55:07and Zoro is like on the ground. At one point, this dude is
- 55:13right behind him, and it's like extremely intimidating because we have seen Zoro get
- 55:21beaten before, but it's never felt like it's this effortless you know. It's
- 55:28always seemed like he gave them a pretty good run for their money, and
- 55:30by the time they started to really beat him, it was because he was
- 55:37giving them more of a fight than they expected, and they finally decide to
- 55:40pull out all the stops. But this is Zoro getting beaten with this guy
- 55:45at like base level energy output. There's hardly any effort, you know.
- 55:53So this is when Sangi flies forward and he kicks Kuma in the face,
- 56:01and of course on the sides, we've got us up and Chopper delighted.
- 56:07What a badass he landed a kick straight to the face, and really just
- 56:13thinking, here goes Sangi saving the day. And then Sangi falls to the
- 56:22ground, clinging to his leg, crying, and I think he like either
- 56:28broke his leg or just really hurt it. But I'll tell you what,
- 56:35I don't think I remember any time where Sangie's had an injury to one of
- 56:39his fighting legs. We've had, sorry, it isn't an appearance of my
- 56:45little guy over here, bless him. We've had Sanji be taken out for
- 56:51the count. You know, he's definitely been sidelined but I've never seen the
- 56:57means by which he like fights fucked up for him like this, and I
- 57:04really found myself upset by it. It's almost as bad as like when one
- 57:09of Zoro's swords gets like broken into pieces. I would say worse because it's
- 57:15a physical thing as well. You could just go buy another sword, but
- 57:17if you really fucked your leg up, you gotta like heal that, which
- 57:21is a pain in the ass. Let's see Sarah. Him says, I
- 57:27get the feeling this was more created to fit in with giving Kuma a bare
- 57:30esthetic while also giving him this kind of op power. Gus says, Yeah,
- 57:36it's a pretty loose connection. There's probably some Japanese on amanopia that connects
- 57:39to flecting concept with pause. Maybe it's meant to be that pap pads are
- 57:44so soft that everything just slips off, like Alvida's fruit or something. I'm
- 57:49not sure. Maybe maybe yeah, I mean, I'll be honest, I
- 57:58really thought I was going to see some claws as well. Like you guys
- 58:01have mentioned about how his name means bear, and I maybe that is coming,
- 58:07because we definitely by the end of this episode haven't seen everything this guy
- 58:10can do. But so far it's just the paw pads. And I also
- 58:17sort of wanted the paw pads to look a little bit more bearish, because
- 58:23there's like a particular look to that kind of and they're just perfectly round circles,
- 58:30and I, you know, it looks so cute. See it just
- 58:32does. The design reminds me of the button covers for the Nintendo Switch.
- 58:40So many people have like those button covers, and that was what I kept
- 58:45thinking of over and over again throughout this. So yeah, everybody attempts their
- 58:52assaults. He is not impressed with absolutely any of them. And finally he's
- 58:58like, I've been told to kill everybody on this island, So here we
- 59:01go, and he begins to do this weird thing. He's holding his hands
- 59:07out and there's this massive bubble of a pawprint in the air, and he's
- 59:13sort of pulsing at it with his hands, and as he does this,
- 59:16it gets smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller until it is between his hands.
- 59:22It had been the size of a pretty good sized house. And eventually
- 59:29he compresses the air so far down that it's like a glowing ball, like
- 59:35a baseball size, and Robin is like, oh, so what he's doing
- 59:43is he's compressing this air down so that when he eventually releases it, it's
- 59:46just going to explode like a bomb. And everybody when they hear the word
- 59:52bomb understandably begins to freak out. And he stops after he's got his weapon
- 1:00:00in place, and he says, so, I've changed my mind. I
- 1:00:06am going to spare all of your lives as long as you give me Lufy's
- 1:00:13head, which of course nobody is going to be willing to do, at
- 1:00:17least from the straw hats. I'm not sure if like some guy on the
- 1:00:22sidelines isn't going to say, come on, guys, let's go cut his
- 1:00:25head off kind of thing, you know. But he puts this forth and
- 1:00:34is like, if you don't agree, then yeah, I'm going to release
- 1:00:37this and the whole place is going to blow up. So that's the deal
- 1:00:43you've got going for you. If I go back with him, that's all
- 1:00:49they're going to need. That's like, you know, he's really their main
- 1:00:52enemy here, and I think that would be good enough for the world government.
- 1:00:59So there's this long pause where we go from face to face and finally
- 1:01:05they're all just like, no, we're not doing that. We're not going
- 1:01:09to betray our own captain, get fucked, and he says this was your
- 1:01:19choice as he releases the power from between his hands, and it's a pretty
- 1:01:24dramatic moment. You watch it expand in the air. I expected this to
- 1:01:30happen a lot faster, and it's like slow mode for sure. We get
- 1:01:34the animation of everybody that's like really heavily shadowed and much more saturated in color.
- 1:01:40And then he says, now suffer the ursa shock, and we see
- 1:01:49the explosion happen, and it's so funny because the way it's cut off,
- 1:01:52it looks for all the world like a Mickey mouse head. It just does.
- 1:01:58It's like a sphere, and you see like the too far to the
- 1:02:01right and left those like toe prints, but the middle ones are cut off
- 1:02:07by the top of the screed, so it just looks like this massive like
- 1:02:12Epcot Center sort of symbol. It's weird. And then this light and we
- 1:02:20see everybody being thrown back, buildings being leveled, people and trees being like
- 1:02:27thrown all over the place because you know, reminder, it's an island or
- 1:02:31it's not an it's a ship, which I keep forgetting because it's just fucking
- 1:02:37feels like an island. Of course it does, that's the point of it.
- 1:02:39And you see the mast go down, like really completely cracked. The
- 1:02:45entire screen goes white a couple of times. And I don't know what to
- 1:02:57think about this, because the sort of sphere of light that comes off it
- 1:03:01is such that I have to assume his ability innately protects him from the effects
- 1:03:10of his own powers. But all I could think was that, like he
- 1:03:15blew up the thing that he was standing on, and what's that gonna you
- 1:03:21know? So the light dissipates and there's like a blank spot on the ocean.
- 1:03:27There's nothing there anymore. Where. What's what's going on? What happened
- 1:03:34to everybody? Where? Where's the fucking sunny? You know? I know
- 1:03:38that, Uh what's her face? She had? Like left? Did she
- 1:03:45get to leave with it? Did that happen? I can't even remember how
- 1:03:49did they get that back? I don't even ah, I've lost track of
- 1:03:53so many like parts of the story, you know, But it is a
- 1:03:59pretty dramatic moment, and I was excited to see him get to use this
- 1:04:02power. The main thing of course, that it will always come down to
- 1:04:08is that I know none of our friends are going to die, So a
- 1:04:12part of me is sort of like, so what, because yeah, you
- 1:04:15blew up all of thriller bark and that's extremely impressive, But there was really
- 1:04:20nobody on there that I cared about that I'm not certain, beyond any doubt
- 1:04:29is going to be fine. So as much as it's like an impressive thing
- 1:04:32in the moment, there's no real sense of stakes due to that, and
- 1:04:36that's always an issue, you know, It's just kind of something you can't
- 1:04:40get around. Oh, Gus, wait, sorry, there's I lost the
- 1:04:49track here, Saraphim says. Or this is just Oda being Oda, and
- 1:04:54none of us are the right type of crazy for it to make sense.
- 1:04:57People have done the math, and that attack a our minimum would have the
- 1:05:00explosive force of two tons of TNT. How would they have done the math?
- 1:05:08What is there to even start with regarding math? On that, Gus
- 1:05:13says. Kuma erased Pirona before she could take the sunny. Remember, I
- 1:05:19don't I remember her disappearing, I guess, and I was I think,
- 1:05:28I says something about maybe that's where he sent her when she asked where she
- 1:05:30would want to go for a vacation. So I guess I vaguely do so
- 1:05:36the sunny was there, So the sunny has to have been destroyed, right,
- 1:05:42And I'm assuming it's not. Again is the thing because plot armor,
- 1:05:48So what happened to it? Because it's truly a blank spot, And I
- 1:05:57guess that like once the camera closes in a little bit, we'll start to
- 1:06:00see some debris or maybe not. Maybe the point of the fact that he
- 1:06:06like erased Pirona, maybe this is sending everybody somewhere else and it's not.
- 1:06:13I mean, we saw things getting destroyed, but maybe there's another aspect to
- 1:06:17it. I don't know. It's just a really weird moment because a big
- 1:06:23part of me is like excited that we got to see it and impressed with
- 1:06:29it, and then another part of me is like, but I know that
- 1:06:30wasn't enough to kill our guys. And if it doesn't even kill the people
- 1:06:34that are like standing closest to him, how powerful can it really be?
- 1:06:40Sarah him says, calculate the volume of air it started with and work out
- 1:06:44the amount of energy compressing it. I got so, but they have to,
- 1:06:47like wildly guess the volume of air, because nothing in this universe is
- 1:06:54proportional to anything that you know, Like even he is just in terms of
- 1:07:00sheer size eight times the size of any of our friends who are normal sized.
- 1:07:06I would guess. I really wonder if it's like, when you get
- 1:07:14to be a devil fruit user of a certain age, do you just start
- 1:07:17to grow? Because all of these guys are inhumanly large, and I've been
- 1:07:26sort of like treating it as if they're an entire different race of people,
- 1:07:30to be honest, and they were given the devil fruits they were because of
- 1:07:34their size, which would make them more intimidating and effective weapons. But now
- 1:07:40I'm starting to be like, maybe it's the other way around. Maybe the
- 1:07:43devil fruit just makes you fucking expand and grow enormous, which would be hilarious
- 1:07:48if we got to see Lufy be this size eventually one day. All Right,
- 1:07:54I've really got to wrap up, But thank you guys so much for
- 1:07:56hanging out with me. I appreciate you a lot and appreciate your lexibility with
- 1:08:00me having a reschedule, and I hope you're enjoying the content. Until next
- 1:08:04time, to Loo motherfucker's That was an unspoiled network podcast.
