Transcript
- 0:00Chris Stone: All right, ladies and gentlemen, the divine divas in three.
- 0:04Two, one
- 0:06Jen Steadman: back in 10 is a podcast for dental leaders who do it all
- 0:10and need 10 minutes to themselves.
- 0:12Savanah Carlson: It's about real conversations, not curated ones, the
- 0:15kind that happen off the clock behind closed doors, and between the chaos of
- 0:19running a practice and running life.
- 0:21Jen Steadman: Hosted by Savannah Carlson and Jen Sedman, two women who've led,
- 0:26learned, and laughed through it all.
- 0:28Savanah Carlson (2): This show brings honest stories, leadership truths, and
- 0:31the occasional sassy take on what it really means to lead in dentistry today,
- 0:36Jen Steadman: because sometimes the best leadership happens when
- 0:39you step away for 10 minutes.
- 0:41Savanah Carlson (2): This is back in 10.
- 0:48Hello everyone.
- 0:49Welcome to back in 10.
- 0:51I am Savanah.
- 0:53And I'm Jen, and this episode is a continuation of our meeting Mayhem
- 1:00Week, where we talk about dental meetings, dental conferences things
- 1:05we like about them, what makes it impactful for us as dental leaders.
- 1:10And today we want to revisit a previous episode about speakers.
- 1:18How we choose what speakers we see, what is it that they discuss
- 1:23or how do they present That really resonates with us as dental managers.
- 1:28And to recap, we had mentioned a few of our top speakers.
- 1:33Now let's, let's go back over that, Jen.
- 1:35So who was in that, that top five?
- 1:37Initially, we had no particular order, no hate to anyone who's not on the list.
- 1:42These just popped into our brains as our top five right now.
- 1:46Who are hot in the industry.
- 1:48Jen Steadman: Yes.
- 1:49Katherine?
- 1:49I tell Belt Katherine and I tell Be communication.
- 1:53Yes.
- 1:54Judy K Mossoff.
- 1:55Judy k Mossoff.
- 1:57Oh, I'm so sad she's retiring.
- 1:59I know, man.
- 2:02Theresa Duncan.
- 2:03Td all the way baby.
- 2:06Carrie Weber.
- 2:07Carrie
- 2:07Savanah Carlson (2): Weber.
- 2:08Legacy.
- 2:09She's a legacy.
- 2:10She comes from legacy and she is a legacy.
- 2:12Yes.
- 2:13Uhhuh, Dave Anderson, Steve Anderson fire.
- 2:18There is a fire in that band when he speaks.
- 2:20That is so engaging and you come out of that refreshed and just raring to go.
- 2:27Love, love that.
- 2:29Jen Steadman: Yeah.
- 2:29And I think, look, Savannah with those, industry speakers that we're talking
- 2:34about here, let's talk about some of the things that we feel like make them.
- 2:39Fantastic.
- 2:40Like some of the things that we look for to that we know we're gonna get
- 2:45something out of the course, right?
- 2:47Like we've been to, so both of us have been to so many courses with
- 2:51all of those and many others, but with all of those specifically.
- 2:55So I think one of the thing, the biggest things for me is that speaker's
- 3:00really engaging with their audience.
- 3:02Like you feel like you're having a conversation with them.
- 3:04It's not.
- 3:06Them speaking from a podium, I'll say like, you are there with them and
- 3:12they are, you're equal, and they're there to support you and guide you
- 3:17even if you've never met them or had a conversation with them before.
- 3:20They make you feel like they got you.
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:23And they know what you've been through and they can.
- 3:26Offer some advice and some guidance.
- 3:28Yeah.
- 3:28I think that's one of the biggest things.
- 3:30Savanah Carlson (2): I love that they're not speaking at
- 3:31you, they're speaking with you.
- 3:33It is that conversation.
- 3:35I agree with you, Jen, on that.
- 3:37For those, those five that we mentioned, I've always felt as though it is
- 3:41a conversation and I love, I love that you brought up that they make
- 3:45you feel like they've been there.
- 3:46That support is really huge when you're sitting in this three hour course and
- 3:50it, it does help with the engagement.
- 3:52Absolutely.
- 3:53Absolutely.
- 3:53Yeah.
- 3:54Jen Steadman: And I think one of the other things too is when I walk away, I
- 4:00know what they wanted me to get out of it and what I can do to implement anything.
- 4:07Like I, I have steps in my head.
- 4:10I know actionably what I can do, and I don't feel lost.
- 4:14Like I've been in classes before where I leave and I go, what?
- 4:19What the hell did they talk about?
- 4:21I don't understand.
- 4:22And I was fully there, fully engaged, and I just man, it
- 4:27completely went over my head.
- 4:29Or I have, I don't know, like in a haze almost.
- 4:32Mm-hmm.
- 4:33Um, that's the last thing that you want.
- 4:36You want people to leave feeling refreshed and yeah, I've been in some
- 4:40of those classes with, with those speakers that I've cried, y'all know?
- 4:45Queen crier over here.
- 4:47I just, I cry.
- 4:48But.
- 4:49It hits you in a certain way that like you can feel it and you feel the emotions
- 4:54behind it because again, they make you feel like they've been there with you and
- 4:59that they can just support you through it.
- 5:00It just, it hits, it hits different,
- 5:02Savanah Carlson (2): and there is a real importance to where
- 5:06you're seeing this speaker and more importantly, the difference
- 5:09between an educational course or.
- 5:13A keynote motivational course.
- 5:15I've been to educational classes where I feel like I'm sitting in fluff
- 5:20and on a cloud, and I say to myself.
- 5:23This is not what I invested in.
- 5:25Mm-hmm.
- 5:25I would've gone to the spa rather than sit here for three
- 5:29hours and hear extra motivation.
- 5:31I'm not saying that that's not important, that's not what I'm saying.
- 5:34But if I go to an educational course, I expect coming out of it to have actionable
- 5:39items that I can take back and implement.
- 5:42And I feel like those top five that we mentioned, I've
- 5:45always left their courses with.
- 5:47Yeah.
- 5:48Three different items of change I knew I could implement easily.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:52And they gave me the tool to be able
- 5:54Jen Steadman: to do that even when it was a keynote, whether it's a 20
- 5:59minute, you know, keynote 45, or it's a five hour course, two day course for
- 6:04some of them that I've done before.
- 6:07I've always had actionable things come out of those.
- 6:11Savanah Carlson (2): But
- 6:12Chris Stone: they are people that also invest in themselves, right?
- 6:16Like we've been talking about this whole week, right.
- 6:18Is investing in yourself and learning and growing and those are
- 6:24things that they have done too.
- 6:25And we talked about change in the last episode and how
- 6:28sometimes change is hard, man.
- 6:30You think that they're different from when they started too.
- 6:33Like everything has changed based on feedback and what you
- 6:37learn and how people, take in the information that you give them.
- 6:42There's so much that comes along with that.
- 6:45They just know their craft of speaking and how to do it and how to make
- 6:49people understand what their point that they're trying to make is.
- 6:53Savanah Carlson (2): It also is valuable to me at least
- 6:56when real world scenarios are.
- 7:00Crafted into their presentation.
- 7:03Mm-hmm.
- 7:04I understand what you're telling me.
- 7:05I understand why it will help X, Y, z be successful, or why it's going
- 7:11to implement this type of change.
- 7:13Give me an example.
- 7:15Show me that what you're saying works when a speaker's able to, to present to
- 7:22me why it works, how it's worked, and that it has worked successfully invested.
- 7:28Totally invested.
- 7:30Look at td, look at Theresa Duncan's courses about insurance.
- 7:34Insurance is not, the most engaging discussion.
- 7:38It isn't.
- 7:39But as a dental insurance nerd, I, I will see Theresa Duncan over and over
- 7:45again because she makes an engaging and she brings it back to scenarios.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:50And she stays on top of it.
- 7:52She stays on top of it.
- 7:53She's current.
- 7:54Yeah.
- 7:54Yes.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:55I wanna see some washed up speaker from 85 years ago who would really doesn't know
- 8:00what's happening in the dental industry.
- 8:03Jen Steadman: I don't, no.
- 8:03Someone that's asking the questions and is listening.
- 8:06That's huge.
- 8:07That's huge.
- 8:08I know one of the things that I learned oh my gosh.
- 8:12More what?
- 8:13More than 10 years ago.
- 8:15Way more than 10 years ago, 15 years ago maybe, from Judy Kay was all about
- 8:19what people bring with them, right?
- 8:21They're boats and she makes it fun.
- 8:24She makes it so you remember, so I remember Boat and it's an acronym,
- 8:27beliefs, opinions, assumption, assumptions and truths like, and I borrow that
- 8:33genius very often because it's a great analogy and just having things that.
- 8:39People can understand easily and can remember.
- 8:43I probably wrote that down 15 years ago and I haven't looked at
- 8:47it since because it's right here.
- 8:49It's ingrained in my head now because it makes total sense to, so just
- 8:55yeah, look for different speakers, look at what their topics are and see
- 8:59if any of them are gonna help with your practice and with your team.
- 9:04I think as we talk about conferences and stuff too, Savannah, we're talking about
- 9:08like things that we bring back with us.
- 9:09So yes, lots of education, lots of learning, but can we talk about the swag?
- 9:15Savanah Carlson (2): Oh, swag.
- 9:17I could go on forever about swag.
- 9:20Jen, what has been your favorite p piece of swag?
- 9:23Like if you had to pick one, you have to pick one right now.
- 9:25I'm asking you one.
- 9:28I have mine in my head.
- 9:29I broke it recently, but I had it.
- 9:32Jen Steadman: I know what it is.
- 9:33I know.
- 9:34Okay.
- 9:34It was a recent one and I think it's something that we are hoping
- 9:38that we can do in the future for our lovely listeners too.
- 9:43You know, something to just like get you in the Zen and to bring
- 9:47you back to like, I don't know.
- 9:51Scent is everything.
- 9:53It just makes you remember things.
- 9:54So I'm gonna say the travel oil diffuser humidifier.
- 10:00Yeah, that's been a fve.
- 10:02I remember when we got that Savannah, we cracked that sucker open and in the
- 10:07hotel room and just, yeah, amazing.
- 10:10Savannah traveled with her essential
- 10:12Savanah Carlson (2): oils and subsequently we got Jen, her essential oils too.
- 10:16So now Jen has her travel essential oils.
- 10:21Yeah, mine is right back here
- 10:22Jen Steadman: on the table.
- 10:23I have stress running right now.
- 10:25This is from the hotel that we stayed at Savannah in Oklahoma.
- 10:29That smells beautiful.
- 10:30Savanah Carlson (2): I am with you.
- 10:32I loved the oil diffuser because.
- 10:36I could use it anywhere.
- 10:37I could put it in my office turn.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:40100%. But I think a constant, awesome swag gift is a solid pen.
- 10:50Give me a solid pen.
- 10:51I'll, I will talk to you for 25 minutes at your booth,
- 10:54especially Jen's types of pens.
- 10:57If you would like to know what Jen gives out, you have
- 11:00to reach out to her directly.
- 11:02Become a client or do a demo with her, and then she'll tell
- 11:05you what kind of pens she gets.
- 11:07Yeah.
- 11:07But a solid
- 11:08Jen Steadman: pen, I want like a, yeah, like a heavy weight pen.
- 11:12Not super heavy, you know, like there's a sweet spot.
- 11:15I don't want a thin classic one.
- 11:17I want one that writes really smooth.
- 11:19Yeah.
- 11:20I'm telling you, there's certain ones that are just.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:24You know, but a pen I would say notebooks.
- 11:27Mm. Sometimes those are a little, eh, you know, I think everyone's really
- 11:32specific in what they want in a notebook.
- 11:34I'll say.
- 11:36One of the other things, honestly, that I love is a good water bottle.
- 11:40I know a lot of people don't like water bottles, but, oh, yeah.
- 11:43Oh, that was from my class.
- 11:45Savanah Carlson (2): Yeah.
- 11:46Sorry.
- 11:46The backside says who actually supplied this swag.
- 11:50But now it has a back intent sticker on it, so we're double swaging it.
- 11:54Jen Steadman: I just had a really good idea for a swag item, but I feel
- 11:57like I wanna do I lock it up in my head and talk about it later with you?
- 12:03Yeah, we're gonna use us.
- 12:05I want something that I can use.
- 12:08Savanah Carlson (2): I got this piece of swag.
- 12:11Oh yeah.
- 12:11It's a key chain flashlight that has all different frigging modes on it.
- 12:15Yeah, it has a red light in it.
- 12:17This is something that
- 12:19Jen Steadman: I use.
- 12:20I got a pen that has a Phillips and Flathead mini screwdriver in it.
- 12:27Oh, I love that.
- 12:28And you just unscrew it, flip it over, and then it's a screwdriver.
- 12:32I love that.
- 12:33Amazing, amazing lip
- 12:34Savanah Carlson (2): balms.
- 12:35Those are always, always fun lip balms.
- 12:38Mm-hmm.
- 12:39Jen Steadman: I think if you're going to a sunny place, I would get a UV lip balm.
- 12:44That was something I always gave to patients too.
- 12:46It's great, especially in the summertime, swag that's
- 12:50Savanah Carlson (2): not only multipurpose, but is
- 12:53not wildly over the top.
- 12:56I love, to, to rock a little rhinestone here and there, but honestly companies,
- 13:03when you invest that much money in a full rhinestone bag, that can only
- 13:07be used really for that conference.
- 13:10I feel like that's a waste of your money.
- 13:12And then what happens when it goes home?
- 13:14Like it just gets handed down to a pre-teen or it gets trashed.
- 13:17Jen Steadman: My kids have a lot of the swag that we have been gifted.
- 13:23Mom, gimme a swag bag.
- 13:25I wanna see what's there.
- 13:26They do.
- 13:27They like wait for it.
- 13:28They're like, what did you get?
- 13:30What did you get?
- 13:31So you need to.
- 13:33There's certain conferences that they give a lot more swag at, I will say.
- 13:36But always leave a little bit of room in your carry on for extra swag.
- 13:42I'll say for companies deciding on swag, do not have it be any
- 13:47liquids over three ounces or glass.
- 13:50'cause a lot of people Yep.
- 13:51Or glass or something really heavy.
- 13:55I was at a conference board, they're like, oh, you won this big basket.
- 13:58And I'm like, that's great.
- 13:59I can't do anything with that.
- 14:01I can't, I'll have the insides of the basket.
- 14:04But you keep the basket.
- 14:05Yeah.
- 14:06Or like, but even the stuff in the basket, I'm like, how am I gonna get this home?
- 14:09Mm-hmm.
- 14:10Chris Stone: You know?
- 14:10So if you are doing like a giveaway or something like that, always have
- 14:15the option that you will ship it to that attendee so then they don't
- 14:19have to worry about it, because that's just, oh, that's a great idea.
- 14:22Mm-hmm.
- 14:23Yeah.
- 14:24Just because it's, sometimes it's too much.
- 14:27Sometimes it's too much.
- 14:28Savanah Carlson (2): I really liked the ring lights.
- 14:30There was one company, one one year that gave out ring lights for your cell phone.
- 14:35Jen Steadman: Mm-hmm.
- 14:36Savanah Carlson (2): That's when Wolfies became a craze.
- 14:38I don't know, I'm old now people,
- 14:40Chris Stone: but no, I love, love a good ring light.
- 14:42Someone gave out like the extent the selfie stick extenders
- 14:45before too usable items.
- 14:49You want it to be something too, that when someone, when they're walking
- 14:52around, when someone's walking around with your item, if someone else sees
- 14:56it, they go, where did you get that?
- 14:59Because yes, they're gonna come over to your booth to get that swag, but they're
- 15:03gonna come over and talk to you, make them talk to you before they get a big
- 15:10Savanah Carlson (2): thing.
- 15:11Yeah.
- 15:11One thing.
- 15:13I explored when I was a vendor at a large event was how am I
- 15:20gonna get people to my booth?
- 15:22What is going to entice people?
- 15:25So I had a, a really nice G Swag gift at the booth, and I had a
- 15:31exciting but kind of mediocre gift that people could wear and.
- 15:38Would create conversation.
- 15:40So I had these scrunchies that lit up and glowed.
- 15:43So by the end of the day, there were people walking around with these
- 15:47light up, glowing, scrunchies in their hair, on their arm, in their bag.
- 15:52And it got to the point where like, oh, you're the boot
- 15:54that has the glow scrunchies.
- 15:56Oh, can I have one?
- 15:58Oh yeah, sure.
- 15:58Do you mind, like, can I just scan your badge for a second and then we can,
- 16:01we can chat about what we do and I'll happily give you a, a glow scrunchie.
- 16:04And even better if you schedule or you secure this membership, you're
- 16:08gonna get this awesome cup too.
- 16:10So let's just chat.
- 16:12Have something that's gonna bring people to your booth that's noticeable.
- 16:16Mm-hmm.
- 16:16So like, even if you have an awesome pen, if you're not that well known
- 16:20yet in the dental industry and you want more leads, make it visual.
- 16:28Make people ask other attendees like, where'd you get that?
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:32Where'd you get that big umbrella hat that says on vacation?
- 16:35Oh, you got it.
- 16:36From that big finance company.
- 16:38Okay.
- 16:39I'm, yeah, I still have mine.
- 16:43I do too, please.
- 16:44I still have like my friendship bracelets and stuff like Uhhuh, one of the, that
- 16:48company I won't say who it is, I will just tell you their primary color is green.
- 16:55They, their swag is on point always.
- 16:59Whoever is marketing for swag at events there, it's on point.
- 17:03I think that we've covered most of our Yeah.
- 17:07Exciting swag and what makes it accessible.
- 17:10Jen Steadman: Agreed.
- 17:11Yeah.
- 17:12I would say I don't need a bag.
- 17:14I don't need, I don't need a bag.
- 17:17I have bags of bags.
- 17:20My husband calls me the bag lady because it, at one time there
- 17:23were so many like dental bags in this house that it's just, nope.
- 17:28Savanah Carlson (2): If
- 17:29Jen Steadman: you're gonna give
- 17:29Savanah Carlson (2): a bag, don't, yeah.
- 17:31Don't give those grocery reusable bags.
- 17:35Give like a cosmetic bag.
- 17:37There was one HR company who gave out.
- 17:40Maybe it was like, I think they labeled it like the hangover bag or something.
- 17:44Oh, yes, yes, yes.
- 17:45Yeah, yeah.
- 17:46Uhhuh and it was, it was a full little travel bag that you could
- 17:49throw in your car, in your purse while you're hiking on the boat.
- 17:54Mm-hmm.
- 17:54You could,
- 17:55Jen Steadman: that type of bag is, is useful.
- 17:57It had all the essentials.
- 17:58It had like bandaids and everything.
- 18:00Uhhuh.
- 18:01Mm-hmm.
- 18:01Yeah.
- 18:01I think look, and if you're gonna do like a bag though, you
- 18:05know the ones that like fold up.
- 18:07Like a little tiny one that folds up that you can like stick in your purse or
- 18:10stick in your car if you ever need it.
- 18:12That makes more sense than like a big bag that I'm gonna put over my shoulder
- 18:16and it's like bright yellow that I'm only gonna use at the conference.
- 18:21Like I think the point of this is.
- 18:24Give people something that they're actually gonna use after and
- 18:27not have it be a one-time thing.
- 18:29You want them to like wear it out, use it out.
- 18:32And for people to see that, not just at the conference, but in general, so,
- 18:36Savanah Carlson (2): mm-hmm.
- 18:37Jen Steadman: Yeah.
- 18:38100%. Mm-hmm.
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40There you go.
- 18:41Look at that, man.
- 18:41We text on a lot.
- 18:44I know, man.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:47Clocking out.
- 18:48Savannah
- 18:48Savanah Carlson (2): clocking out to clock back in.
- 18:50You know what I'm saying?
- 18:51I know.
- 18:52Bye y'all.
- 18:53See you later.
- 18:55Thanks for spending a few minutes with us on back in 10.
- 18:58If
- 18:58Chris Stone: something made you laugh, nod or feel
- 19:01Jen Stedman: a little more human, share it with a friend and make
- 19:03sure that you're subscribed.
- 19:05Savanah Carlson (2): You can also follow us on Instagram at Back in 10 Pod for more
- 19:08behind the scenes updates and probably
- 19:12Chris Stone: a little chaos.
- 19:13We're not here to have it all figured out.
- 19:15We are just here to tell you the things that we wish someone had told us
- 19:19Savanah Carlson (2): and remind you that leadership doesn't
- 19:21have to be perfect, just real.
- 19:25We'll be back in 10.
