- 0:00Welcome back to the Deep Dive where we take all that travel
- 0:02research you've been doing. You know the articles, the forum
- 0:05post, the endless resort reviews, and we boil it all down
- 0:10into what you absolutely need to know.
- 0:11Right, the essential. Intel exactly and today, if
- 0:14you're planning a trip to Southeast Asia or you just love
- 0:17understanding a destination inside and out, this is this is
- 0:21going to be your most efficient hour.
- 0:23Today we are heading to a place that, well, it often gets
- 0:27compared to its more famous neighbors, but it promises
- 0:30something a little different, a bit more Polish.
- 0:33We're going to the East Coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
- 0:35Specifically to the jewel of the Taranganu Marine Park, the
- 0:41beautiful and I think, somewhat complex Ridang Island.
- 0:44Complex is a good word because when you first started looking
- 0:47into this, the reputation is very specific, isn't it?
- 0:49It is. It's almost universally billed
- 0:51as the more luxurious, more manicured and definitely more
- 0:55expensive cousin to islands like the prehensions.
- 0:58Yeah, you're not going there to find a $5 dorm room or pitch a
- 1:01tent on the beach. Not at all.
- 1:03The entire islands tourism is built around these large,
- 1:06organized, often all inclusive style resorts.
- 1:09And that's really the core question we need to tackle
- 1:12today, isn't it? Yeah, it's our mission for this.
- 1:14Deep dive it. Is we have to cut through that
- 1:16marketing language? Does polished actually mean a
- 1:19better, more accessible, higher quality experience?
- 1:22Or is it just an overpriced tour bubble where you're trapped
- 1:25eating from a buffet for three days?
- 1:27Exactly. Is this the slice of paradise
- 1:30that families and couples are actually looking for?
- 1:32That's what we need to figure out for you.
- 1:34So we've structured this to do just that.
- 1:36First, we're going to tackle the logistics the the multi step
- 1:40journey to even get your feet on the sand.
- 1:43Then we'll get into accommodation and how your
- 1:45choice of hotel basically dictates your entire trip.
- 1:48And of course, the food. We will absolutely cover how to
- 1:51escape that potential buffet based trauma that some people
- 1:55worry about. And finally, we'll spend the
- 1:57most time on the real reason you go the main event.
- 2:00The aquatic wonders, the marine life that honestly justifies the
- 2:05entire effort of getting there. Let's just jump right in,
- 2:08because the first challenge, the very first thing to wrap your
- 2:12head around, is the journey itself.
- 2:15It's a process. OK, let's unpack this because as
- 2:18you said, there's no bridge. This isn't an island you just
- 2:20drive to, it requires some serious coordination.
- 2:23It really does. You're looking at air, then Rd.,
- 2:26then sea travel, all in sequence.
- 2:28Right, and it all starts with a flight.
- 2:30Yes, you have to fly into the nearest mainland city, which is
- 2:34Kuala Taranganu. The airport code to remember is
- 2:37TGG. And for most people listening,
- 2:39especially international travelers, that means connecting
- 2:42through Kuala Lumpur first. Right.
- 2:44Almost always, yeah. You'll fly into KL, the main
- 2:46hub, and then take a short domestic flight from there.
- 2:49OK, so that first leg, the flight from KL to TGG, that's
- 2:53the easy part, I take it? It is, thankfully it's a really
- 2:56quick hop, just about an hour in the air.
- 2:58And it's a popular route. Very serviced by all the big
- 3:01players AirAsia Malaysia Airlines you'll find multiple
- 3:04flights a day. Which usually means the price is
- 3:06reasonable. Exactly.
- 3:08If you book in advance, especially outside of the main
- 3:11school holidays, you can often find round trip tickets from KL
- 3:15for under fifty U.S. dollars, sometimes even less.
- 3:18Oh wow. OK, so getting to the mainland
- 3:21coast is actually pretty cheap and easy.
- 3:23It is the real logistical puzzle starts the moment you land at
- 3:26TGG. Because a countdown clock starts
- 3:29ticking. Precisely once you're on the
- 3:31ground, you have a very limited window to get from that airport
- 3:35to a jetty to catch the final boat over to the island.
- 3:38And this is where your first big decision comes in, because there
- 3:41isn't just one Jetty. Correct, and this choice can
- 3:44make a huge difference to your travel time and frankly your
- 3:47stress levels. You have two main options,
- 3:50Shabandar Jetty and Meringue Jetty.
- 3:52Let's start with Shabandar. Where's that?
- 3:54Shabandar is located right in the city of Kuala Taranganu
- 3:57itself. OK, that sounds convenient.
- 3:58You're already in the city where you landed.
- 4:00It sounds convenient, but it's a bit of a trap because you're in
- 4:03the city, you have to deal with city traffic to get there.
- 4:07But the real issue is the boat ride itself.
- 4:09It's significantly longer from Shabandar.
- 4:11Why is that? Is it just further away?
- 4:13It is, yeah. Geographically it's further
- 4:15South, so the ferry has to travel a longer distance out in
- 4:18the open sea to reach Redang. Plus the public ferries from
- 4:22there can be a bit slower. So you're looking at what, an
- 4:25hour and a half? Maybe 2 hours on the water.
- 4:27Easily, which, if the sea is a little choppy, is not a great
- 4:30start to a relaxing holiday. OK, so that brings us to the
- 4:33other option, Meringue Jetty. And this is the strategic
- 4:36choice. This is the high value tip.
- 4:39So where is meringue? Meringue is about a 30 to 40
- 4:41minute taxi ride north of the airport, so you're actually
- 4:44driving away from the main city. You skip the downtown traffic
- 4:48completely. And that little bit of extra
- 4:50time in a taxi saves you a massive amount of time on the
- 4:53boat. Because it's a much shorter
- 4:55crossing from there. Much shorter from Meringue.
- 4:58You're usually on Redang in under an hour.
- 5:00You're launching from a point that's geographically much
- 5:03closer to the island. That makes a huge difference,
- 5:06and this brings us to what seems like the best possible way to
- 5:10handle this transfer. The seamless resort transfer.
- 5:13If you want that true switch off your brain holiday, this is the
- 5:17way to do it. So the big resorts, the ones
- 5:19like the Taras or the huge Laguna Radang, they don't just
- 5:22rely on the public ferries. No, they run their own private
- 5:25high speed ferries just for their guests.
- 5:27And I'm guessing they all leave from the better jetty.
- 5:30They almost all leave from Meringue Jetty.
- 5:31It's part of their system. So when you book one of those
- 5:34all inclusive packages, the ferry is often just baked into
- 5:38the price. It is, and that's where the
- 5:40experience becomes, you know, truly stress free.
- 5:44Describe what that looks like. Well, you land at TG Jew, you
- 5:47get your bags, and there's a resort representative waiting
- 5:50for you with a sign. No haggling with taxis.
- 5:53None. They guide you to a pre arranged
- 5:55shuttle bus. They take your luggage right
- 5:56there. The next time you see your bags,
- 5:58they're in your hotel room. Wow.
- 6:00And the boat itself is more comfortable, often air
- 6:03conditioned, and it takes you directly to your resort's own
- 6:06and dock. It just removes all the friction
- 6:08from the journey. That logistical cushioning,
- 6:11that's what people are paying for when they talk about Radang
- 6:14being more polished. That's a huge part of it.
- 6:17For a family, traveling with kids and tons of gear, that
- 6:21service is invaluable. There's always a bet this well
- 6:25oiled machine runs on a very strict schedule.
- 6:28And this is the most crucial planning advice we can give you.
- 6:31You must check the ferry schedules before you book your
- 6:34flight. It's non negotiable.
- 6:36Absolutely. The resort's time, their
- 6:38transfers to meet the morning and early afternoon flights.
- 6:42The last boats of the day typically leave meringue mid
- 6:45afternoon. Sometimes as early as 3:00 PM.
- 6:47Right. So if you book a flight that
- 6:48lands at TGG at say 4:30 in the afternoon.
- 6:53You've missed it. You're stuck.
- 6:54You've missed it. The boat is gone.
- 6:56There are no more until the next morning.
- 6:58And the consequences? You have to spend the night on
- 7:00the mainland in Quala Tarangano. Which is not where you want it
- 7:03to be. You lose a full day of your
- 7:05vacation, and you forfeit the money for that first night at
- 7:08your expensive island resort. So the rule of thumb is to
- 7:11budget at least two to three hours from the time your plane
- 7:14touches down to the time you step on the sand.
- 7:16That's a safe buffer. It gives you time for baggage,
- 7:19the taxi ride, checking in at the jetty lounge and the boat
- 7:22ride itself. Respect that mid afternoon cut
- 7:25off. OK.
- 7:26And one final point on timing that is even less flexible, the
- 7:30seasonal shutdown. Yes, this isn't a preference.
- 7:34This is a meteorological reality.
- 7:36Redang is on the East Coast of Malaysia.
- 7:39Which means it gets hit directly by the northeast monsoon.
- 7:42So from late October through early March, the entire area
- 7:47effectively shuts down. What does that mean in practice?
- 7:50The seas become incredibly rough, dangerous even, and the
- 7:55weather is just torrential rain for days on end.
- 7:58It's not a pleasant beach holiday.
- 8:00So the resorts just close. They close completely, they
- 8:02board up the windows and most of the staff home and all boat
- 8:05services are suspended. You can't book a trip then
- 8:08because there's nothing there to book.
- 8:09So the prime time, the only time you should really consider going
- 8:12is April to September. That's the window.
- 8:15That's when you get the calm seas, the sunny skies and that
- 8:18incredible 20m water visibility that the island is famous for.
- 8:22Don't even try to risk it in October or March.
- 8:24It's a gamble you will almost certainly lose.
- 8:27OK, so you've timed it right, you've made the transfer from
- 8:31meringue and you've finally arrived.
- 8:33Now comes the next huge decision, which is where to drop
- 8:36your anchor. And this is so important on Red
- 8:38Dang because unlike a lot of other islands, you can't just
- 8:40rent a scooter and zip around. Right.
- 8:42Getting between the different bays and beaches requires a
- 8:45water taxi. Which can be slow and frankly,
- 8:49pretty expensive. So your choice of resort doesn't
- 8:51just define where you sleep, it defines your entire experience,
- 8:55your food, your social life, your activities.
- 8:58So let's break down the main options, starting with the heart
- 9:01of the island, Pasi or Pancheng. Which literally translates to
- 9:04Longbooch and it is the island's center of gravity.
- 9:07Visually, what are we talking about here?
- 9:10It is that postcard image of Paradise, a huge wide Crescent
- 9:14of the most perfect powdery white sand you can imagine.
- 9:18And this is where the famous squeaking sand is.
- 9:20It is. The sand is so fine and has such
- 9:23a specific composition that when you walk on it, it actually
- 9:26makes this little squeaking sound under your feet.
- 9:29It's a really unique detail. And this beach is where most of
- 9:32the main resorts are located side by side.
- 9:34Correct. And the big one, the one you
- 9:36can't miss, is the Laguna Rodang Island Resort.
- 9:39The sources describe it as a giant a self-contained universe.
- 9:43That's a good way to put it. It has hundreds of rooms,
- 9:46multiple restaurants, a massive swimming pool complex, its own
- 9:51dive center. It's designed to be a world unto
- 9:53itself. So let me challenge that for a
- 9:55second. If the goal is this pristine
- 9:57natural paradise, yeah, doesn't a resort of that scale kind of
- 10:03work against the vibe? That's a great question, and the
- 10:05answer is that Laguna isn't selling quiet, secluded
- 10:08paradise. It's selling convenience and
- 10:10scale. The vibe is definitely more high
- 10:12energy, it's very social and it is absolutely perfect for a
- 10:16specific group of people, families with kids.
- 10:19Because everything is right there.
- 10:21Everything they offer those three day, two night packages
- 10:24that bundle your room, your buffet meals, and your snuggling
- 10:27trips. It's a complete turnkey beach
- 10:30holiday solution. And that energy carries into the
- 10:33the evenings on Long Beach. For sure, with all the resorts
- 10:36lined up, the beach comes alive at night.
- 10:38You'll find little pop up bars on the sand, live music, those
- 10:42seafood barbecues we'll talk about later.
- 10:44If you want atmosphere and social energy, Long Beach is the
- 10:47spot. And it's not just Laguna right?
- 10:49There are other similar places like Redeing Reef or Seri
- 10:52Pacifica. Exactly.
- 10:53They offer a very similar vibe, just on a slightly smaller
- 10:56scale. Same convenience, same package
- 10:59deals. OK, but what if that sounds
- 11:00like, well, a nightmare? What if you want the the
- 11:03opposite of a giant busy resort? Then you are looking for the
- 11:06secluded sanctuary, the total antithesis of Long Beach.
- 11:10And that would be the Taras. The Taras Beach and Spa Resort.
- 11:14It's in a different league and more importantly, a different
- 11:16location. It occupies its own completely
- 11:19private Bay. It's a world away from the Long
- 11:21Beach crowds. A world away and you pay for
- 11:24that isolation. We should be upfront about the
- 11:26price. This is the premium luxury
- 11:29option. You're looking at several
- 11:31hundred U.S. dollars a night. So what's the vibe there?
- 11:33Quiet, exclusive, impeccably maintained.
- 11:38It's all about privacy and high end service.
- 11:41It's the perfect spot for a honeymoon or a big anniversary
- 11:43trip. For people who are actively
- 11:45trying to avoid the family focused energy of Long Beach.
- 11:49Precisely, they're buying seclusion.
- 11:52OK, so we have the busy hub and the exclusive sanctuary.
- 11:55Is there a middle ground? There is, and it tends to
- 11:58attract a more focused kind of traveler.
- 12:00These are the resorts in quieter areas like Tuluk Along or
- 12:03Tulukdullam. A place like Redon Kalong Resort
- 12:06comes to mind. And what's their niche?
- 12:08They often cater to the more serious, dedicated diving crowd.
- 12:12So the resort is built around the dive center, not a giant
- 12:15swimming pool. Exactly.
- 12:16The atmosphere is much quieter, more laid back.
- 12:19The focus is purely on the marine life, less on the evening
- 12:23social scene. And there's a little secret
- 12:24benefit to staying in these quieter bays.
- 12:27There is, because there's so much less boat traffic and fewer
- 12:30people in the water. The snorkeling right off the
- 12:33beach in a place like Tulikkalong can actually be
- 12:36better than on the main beach. The fish are less disturbed.
- 12:39Exactly. You get healthier coral and
- 12:42boulder fish right near the shore.
- 12:43But no matter which of these three styles you choose, you
- 12:46have to accept that practical consequence of being isolated in
- 12:50your Bay. You do.
- 12:51If you stay at a secluded resort like the Taras, you are
- 12:54essentially a captive of that resort.
- 12:56You can't just decide on a whim to pop over to Long Beach for
- 12:59dinner. Not easily.
- 13:00You have to arrange one of those water taxis, which, as we said,
- 13:03can be surprisingly expensive and takes time to organize.
- 13:07The cost and hassle often mean people just don't do it.
- 13:10So the take away is clear. Choose Long Beach if you want
- 13:13options and energy. Choose a private Bay if you want
- 13:16silence, but be prepared to stay put and pay for it.
- 13:20Your resort choice is the single biggest decision you'll make for
- 13:23your Redang trip. OK, so from where we sleep to
- 13:27what we eat, let's talk about the food because this is often
- 13:30the biggest worry for people booking those all inclusive
- 13:33deals. We have to tackle the buffet
- 13:36trauma. It's a very real fear, isn't it?
- 13:38The idea of queuing up for the same lukewarm food every day.
- 13:41Yeah, nobody wants that. And with Redang being so reliant
- 13:45on full board packages, you're going to be eating at a lot of
- 13:49buffets. You are, but the reality,
- 13:51especially at the bigger places like Laguna, is actually better
- 13:54than you might think. They cater to a wide audience.
- 13:56A very wide international and Asian audience, so it's not just
- 14:00bland western food. They put a strong emphasis on
- 14:03good quality Malaysian dishes. So you'll find things like beef
- 14:06rending. Absolutely.
- 14:07You'll find authentic rending, various curries, stir fries,
- 14:11noodle stations right alongside the pizza and pasta that you
- 14:15need to keep the kids happy. So it's more about variety and
- 14:18function than gourmet dining. That's the perfect way to put
- 14:20it. It is plentiful, it is
- 14:22convenient, and it works very well for families.
- 14:25But, and this is a big but, Redang is not a culinary
- 14:27destination. Right, You don't go there for
- 14:29the food scene. No, it's built for consistency
- 14:32and volume, not for foodies seeking some kind of revelatory
- 14:37dining experience. So if you're the kind of
- 14:39traveler who needs to escape the hotel canteen, you need an
- 14:43escape hatch. And luckily there is a fantastic
- 14:46one. It's the absolute culinary
- 14:48highlight of the island. The evening seafood barbecue on
- 14:51Long Beach. Yes, this is the must do
- 14:53experience. These are small, standalone
- 14:56places, often tucked between the bigger resorts.
- 14:59Hate the picture for us. What's the scene like?
- 15:01As sunset approaches, they drag these big charcoal grills right
- 15:04out onto the sand. The whole beach starts to fill
- 15:07with that incredible smoky, savory smell.
- 15:10And you don't order from a menu. No, this is the best part.
- 15:13You walk up to a big display of fresh seafood on ice and you
- 15:17point. You choose your exact fish, or
- 15:19your squid, or these huge beautiful tiger prawns.
- 15:23And they cook it right there for you.
- 15:24They weigh it, price it, and throw it on the charcoal grill
- 15:27with a simple marinade. You eat it at a plastic table
- 15:30with your feet in that squeaky sand.
- 15:32It is simple, fresh and absolutely delicious.
- 15:35That's the authentic experience people are looking for.
- 15:37It is a place like Summer Point. Near 1 of the smaller villas is
- 15:42a great example. It's the real deal.
- 15:44OK, but we have to ground this in the reality of island
- 15:47economics. We do everything on the island,
- 15:50from the fish to the charcoal to the bottled water has to be
- 15:53brought in by boat from the mainland.
- 15:56And that means you're paying an island premium for everything
- 15:58you. Are don't expect Kuala Lumpur
- 16:01prices, a can of soda, a bag of chips, and especially that fresh
- 16:04seafood. It's all going to cost more than
- 16:07you'd pay on the mainland. Manager price expectations.
- 16:10Exactly, and that price premium goes way up when we start
- 16:13talking about alcohol. This is an important cultural
- 16:15point. It is Rodang is in the state of
- 16:18Taranganu, which is one of the more conservative states in
- 16:20Malaysia. So what does that mean for a
- 16:23tourist whining a beer with dinner?
- 16:25It means alcohol available, but it's pretty much only sold
- 16:28within the tourist resorts and because of taxes and import
- 16:31costs it is expensive. There are No 7 elevens on the
- 16:34beach selling cheap beer. Definitely not, and that cost
- 16:37combined with the general atmosphere really shapes the
- 16:40island's identity. It's not a party island.
- 16:42Not in the slightest. The vibe is wholesome and family
- 16:46focused. The price of alcohol naturally
- 16:48keeps the evening scene very calm and relaxed.
- 16:51OK, so we've navigated the journey, found a place to stay,
- 16:55and we've eaten. Now we get to the real reason
- 16:58we're here. Yes, this is where it gets
- 17:01really interesting, the aquatic wonders.
- 17:03This is the heart of the Redang experience.
- 17:06The entire island is a protected marine park and you can tell
- 17:10you. Absolutely can.
- 17:11The first thing you'll notice is the water clarity.
- 17:13It is phenomenal. We're talking 15 to 20 meters of
- 17:17visibility on a good day, and that clarity reveals an
- 17:21incredible abundance of marine life.
- 17:24This is a thriving, healthy ecosystem.
- 17:26And snorkeling is the number one activity.
- 17:28It's built into every resort package.
- 17:30It is. It's the most accessible way for
- 17:32everyone to experience it. So let's talk about the main
- 17:34spots you'll go. First up, the Marine Park
- 17:37Center. This is the place everyone goes,
- 17:39right? The guaranteed siding spot.
- 17:40It is because the fish here are so used to people and
- 17:45unfortunately used to being fed. They gather in enormous schools.
- 17:50You are guaranteed to be surrounded by clouds of fish.
- 17:53So for a first timer or a kid, it's an instant wow moment.
- 17:57Absolutely. You'll see huge schools of
- 17:59jackfish, colorful parrotfish. It's an immediate.
- 18:02Reward, but there is a major downside.
- 18:05A huge 1 during peak hours. This place is chaos.
- 18:09You can have hundreds of people in the water at once, all in
- 18:12their orange life vests. It's been described as human
- 18:15soup. Not exactly a tranquil nature
- 18:18experience. Not at all.
- 18:19And it brings up that physical issue of feeding the fish.
- 18:22Many operators hand out bread to attract them you.
- 18:24Just terrible for the fish in the reef.
- 18:26It is. It's just not a sustainable
- 18:28practice. So we'd say go see the fish, but
- 18:30please do not participate in feeding them, Just observe.
- 18:33OK, so if the marine park is the chaotic introduction, what's the
- 18:36spiritual highlight? That would be Turtle Bay near
- 18:39Tulip Kalong. And this is an absolute must do.
- 18:42This is the experience that will stay with you.
- 18:44You just float quietly on the surface, and below you in the
- 18:48seagrass beds are giant green sea turtles just eating, just
- 18:54peacefully munching on seagrass, completely unbothered.
- 18:57Seeing these huge ancient creatures in their natural
- 19:00habitat is just it's incredibly moving.
- 19:04And it's not a rare sighting. Not at all.
- 19:06It's common to see half a dozen turtles in under an hour.
- 19:09That kind of reliable natural encounter is what makes Redang
- 19:13so special. So we have these two very
- 19:15different snorkeling experiences.
- 19:16This leads to the high value strategy.
- 19:18Yes, the best advice we can give you is this.
- 19:21Skip the big scheduled group tour from your resort.
- 19:24And instead. Hire a private boat for a few
- 19:26hours. It costs more, but it is
- 19:28absolutely worth every single penny.
- 19:30Why is that? Because you are in control, you
- 19:32can tell the boatmen let's go to Turtle Bay before the big crowds
- 19:35arrive, or you can visit the marine park after they've all
- 19:38left. You get the place to yourself.
- 19:39Or close to it. Plus the local boatmen know all
- 19:43the secret spots, a little coves and reefs that aren't on the
- 19:45official tour map. It completely elevates the
- 19:48experience from mass tourism to personal discovery.
- 19:51OK. And for those who want to go
- 19:52deeper, what about diving? Rodang is a fantastic and very
- 19:57convenient place to dive. There are over 20 registered
- 20:00dive sites around the island. Catering to all skill levels.
- 20:03All levels there are beautiful shallow coral gardens for
- 20:06beginners and for more advanced divers there are deeper
- 20:09pinnacles and even a couple of wrecks to explore.
- 20:12And the coral health is good. It's generally very good.
- 20:15You see these huge fields of table coral, vibrant soft
- 20:18corals. It's a really healthy, protected
- 20:21reef system. What are some of the star
- 20:22attractions for divers? You can pretty reliably expect
- 20:26to see black tip reef sharks, especially in the shallows.
- 20:29Big schools of Barracuda are common on the deeper sites and
- 20:33just a dizzying variety of reef fish.
- 20:35And it's easy to organize. Super easy.
- 20:37Every single major resort has its own Payday certified dive
- 20:41center. You just walk in, show your
- 20:42card, and book your dives. It couldn't be simpler.
- 20:45So the water is clearly the main event.
- 20:48What is there to do on land when you need a break?
- 20:51Land activities are pretty low key.
- 20:52Lounging on Long Beach is probably #1 people watching,
- 20:56reading a book. But there's a hike.
- 20:58Right there is a small but very hot and sweaty jungle trail
- 21:03connects Long Beach over to the Bay where the Taras is.
- 21:07A good way to see the island's interior.
- 21:09It is, but you absolutely must bring mosquito repellent, the
- 21:13industrial strength kind. Don't even think about doing it
- 21:15without. And in the evenings, aside from
- 21:17the BBQ, you'll. Find fire dancing shows on Long
- 21:20Beach. They're a bit, you know,
- 21:21entertainingly cheesy, but it's fun for families and adds to the
- 21:25relaxed, wholesome atmosphere. Right, we've built a really
- 21:27detailed picture. Now let's apply that essential
- 21:30filter. What are the things you should
- 21:32actively skip to have a better trip?
- 21:35OK, number one, and this might sound counterintuitive, skip the
- 21:38standard three day two night package.
- 21:41That's the main product they sell.
- 21:42Why skip it? Because it's too rushed.
- 21:45When you factor in the travel time, you arrive and you're
- 21:48immediately thrown onto this rigid schedule of meals and
- 21:51snorkeling trips. There's no time to just breathe.
- 21:55You feel like you have to do everything because you've
- 21:56already paid for. It exactly you lose all
- 21:58flexibility. The much better strategy is to
- 22:01stay for at least four or five nights, book your room only, and
- 22:06then pay for your activities a la carte.
- 22:08That makes so much sense unless you have a lazy beach day
- 22:11without feeling guilty, right? My turn for an emphatic skip.
- 22:15And we've touched on this skip interfering with nature.
- 22:18Do not feed the fish. Even if the boat operator gives
- 22:21you bread. Especially then just politely
- 22:23decline. It's bad for the fish, it's bad
- 22:25for the coral. Be a respectful observer in the
- 22:28Marine park, OK? What's next on the skip list?
- 22:30Skip trying to do Redang on a shoestring budget.
- 22:33It's just not that kind of place.
- 22:35It really isn't the island prices for food, drinks and
- 22:38transport will just lead to constant frustration if you're
- 22:40trying to count every penny. So if you're a budget
- 22:43backpacker. You will have a much better time
- 22:45and get far better value for your money on the nearby
- 22:48Prehension islands. Rating is firmly a mid range to
- 22:51luxury destination. And the final, most important
- 22:54skip of all. We have to say it one more time.
- 22:57Skip the seasonal risk. Do not under any circumstances
- 23:01try to go during the monsoon from late October to early
- 23:05March. It's a guaranteed trip runner.
- 23:07Guaranteed. OK, So what does this all mean?
- 23:10We've gone through all the details, let's synthesize it.
- 23:13What is the actual real vibe of the island?
- 23:15I think the best word for it is manicured.
- 23:18It's a curated paradise. The sand is raked.
- 23:21The transfers are seamless. The schedules are efficient.
- 23:24Which means it's beautiful, clean and very safe.
- 23:26It is, but the trade off is that it lacks a wild, rugged,
- 23:30adventurous feel. It's a very polished product.
- 23:33And it's not necessarily quiet and deserted, especially on Long
- 23:36Beach. No Long Beach can be quite
- 23:37fizzy. You'll hear jet skis and boats.
- 23:40It's not a silent retreat unless you pay the premium to be
- 23:43isolated at a resort like the Tararas.
- 23:45But the overall feeling is relaxed and wholesome.
- 23:47Overwhelmingly so. It's incredibly family friendly.
- 23:50It is not a party island. And maybe it's biggest selling
- 23:53point is that it's an escape from decision fatigue.
- 23:56That's it right there. It's a switch off your brain
- 23:58holiday. Once you're there, everything is
- 24:00taken care of. It's easy and in today's world
- 24:03that has immense value. So let's give the final verdict
- 24:07for different types of travelers, honeymooners or a
- 24:10romantic couple. If you can spring for a secluded
- 24:13resort like the Tara's, it's a nine out of 10 truly world class
- 24:18romance and relaxation. Families with kids staying on
- 24:21Long Beach. Also a nine out of 10 the
- 24:23safety, the convenience, the easy access to the water.
- 24:26It's a perfect family holiday spot.
- 24:28What about a hardcore adventurous diver?
- 24:31I'd say A7 out of 10. The diving is very very good,
- 24:34but it's a resort based and highly organized.
- 24:36It might not scratch the itch for someone looking for true off
- 24:39the grid exploration. And finally, that budget
- 24:42backpacker. A5 out of 10.
- 24:44The value just isn't there for them.
- 24:45The prehensions are much better fit.
- 24:47So in the end, Redang is this beautiful, accessible marine
- 24:51Wonderland that delivers exactly what it promises.
- 24:54It does, as long as you go in prepared to spend a bit for
- 24:57comfort and you're ready to focus purely on that squeaky
- 25:00sand, that crystal Clearwater and those magnificent turtles.
- 25:04That's our deep dive into Redang Island.
- 25:07Hopefully that gives you everything you need to plan the
- 25:09perfect trip. And as a final thought, to leave
- 25:11you with something to think about.
- 25:13Go on. Rodang is a fascinating case
- 25:15study. You have this incredible, highly
- 25:17visible natural treasure, those turtles in Turtle Bay, and you
- 25:21have this incredibly efficient tourism machine that brings
- 25:24thousands of people right to their doorstep.
- 25:26The seamless logistics we were just praising.
- 25:28Exactly. So the question to Mull over is
- 25:32how does the global tourism industry balance that need for
- 25:35convenient, easy access with the absolute imperative to protect
- 25:40the very thing everyone is coming to see?
- 25:42That tension between access and preservation.
- 25:45It's a tough balance to strike, and Redang is right at the heart
- 25:48of that conversation. It's something worth thinking
- 25:50about long after you've left the beach.
