- 0:07The Kansas City Royals faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for a Tuesday night game on May 1st, 1973.
- 0:14In 1971, Bob Lemon had guided the Royals to their first winning season since the franchise began as an expansion team in 1969.
- 0:22In 1972, however, the Royals finished below 500, and Royals owner Ewing Kaufman fired Lemon as manager, saying he wanted someone younger.
- 0:30He hired assistant coach Jack McKeon, who was getting managerial offers from other clubs during the offseason.
- 0:35Kaufman later admitted he fired Lemon because he did not want to lose Jack McKeon.
- 0:39The Yankees were managed by Ralph Hauk, and pressure was on Hauk in 1973, as he had only managed to finish above 500 three times in his eight seasons and had never made the playoffs.
- 0:49This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Frank Messer and Bill White.
- 1:19We'll be watching clients every move, especially early in this fall game.
- 1:23Steve doesn't feel that that strained shoulder affects his sinker, and just threw his first pitch.
- 1:33It looks like he's throwing freely.
- 1:35I remember in Milwaukee after he threw the pitch and hurt the shoulder, he pushed the ball up there.
- 1:42Now he finished the inning out and then had to leave.
- 1:44Of course it was cool up there in Milwaukee that day. It's cool here tonight.
- 1:48But Steve just broke off a good breaking ball, so it looks like he's got at least all his pitches.
- 1:54I think he was a little bit worried about being able to throw the breaking ball, but he just threw a good breaking ball.
- 2:01So it looks like Steve Klein's ready.
- 2:04All right, the KC coaches. Harry Dunlop moves into a new position, coaching at third base.
- 2:09And Charlie Lau, who is also the Kansas City batting coach, is coaching down at first base.
- 2:15And if I'm not mistaken, well, I know that Charlie Lau was a catcher during his playing days,
- 2:20and it seems to me that Harry Dunlop was too.
- 2:27All right, here we go as Freddie Patek steps in, and we're all set for action here at Yankee Stadium,
- 2:32getting underway all about 25 minutes or so past the normal starting time because of the rain.
- 2:40Patek is batting 265. He's a right-hander.
- 2:47Steve Klein into the windup. Here comes the first pitch. It's over for a called strike, and this game is underway.
- 2:52Patek has been up 83 times with 22 hits, five doubles, one triple, one home run, and he has already stolen six bases.
- 3:04The windup by Klein, the pitch coming. Popped up. Foul. A fair territory down. The third base line played on a hop by Nettles.
- 3:11He throws on to first base in time. Patek is out one down.
- 3:26So there's one out, and here is Cookie Rojas, the second baseman.
- 3:30And between him, Patek and Rojas give this club a good double play combination. They are strong up the middle defensively.
- 3:37And Rojas comes in with a hot bat, hitting 310, 27 base hits.
- 3:42More than any other starter in this ballgame tonight, as far as the Royals are concerned, and eight of those hits have been doubles.
- 3:48He takes long away, ball one.
- 3:52Backlings say Rojas has more base hits than any other player in this game.
- 3:56Thurman Munson of the Yankees leads them with 26. Rojas, the right-hand batter, the one-hole pitch.
- 4:02Breaking ball just outside. Two balls and no strikes.
- 4:08Rojas can also steal a base.
- 4:13He is at three. We look at the top three men in the batting order. Between them, they have 12 stolen bases.
- 4:20The first ball on inside makes it ball three, three and all. Rojas steps out, looks down at Dunlop, the third base coach.
- 4:28Still looking down there, taking a couple of practice swings, and now with a final look, he moves back in.
- 4:36Feet spread, and the three-hole pitch. Inside, ball four.
- 4:42So Rojas draws a walk, and the Royals get the game's first baserunner.
- 4:46The batter will be Amos Otis, the center fielder.
- 4:50There's a man who can also do a lot of things.
- 4:54He's got a 295 batting average, 26 base hits, six doubles, one triple, four home runs, 12 runs batted in.
- 5:03This club scores a lot of runs, Bill. I'm just looking down. He seems like nearly everybody's in double figures and runs score.
- 5:12They also then must drive in a lot of runs. Yep, nearly everybody's in double figures in RBIs, too.
- 5:20All right, one out, a runner at first, no score. Bloomberg's holding on the runner, Rojas, and here's the pitch to Otis.
- 5:26Breaking ball is outside, ball one. Amos Otis hitting 295.
- 5:33Looking down the run score column, Potak 19, Rojas 15, Otis 17, Mayberry 17, Kirkpatrick 13, Penella 10.
- 5:44Runs batted in. They have five men in double figures.
- 5:47Rojas 14, Otis 12, Mayberry the big man, 19, Kirkpatrick 14, Penella 15.
- 5:59Stretched by Klein, he stamps the left foot, checks the runner and deals.
- 6:03That's a fast ball over the outside corner for a strike, and it's one and one.
- 6:07One ball, one strike to the right hand hitting Amos Otis.
- 6:11This club, Frank, Kansas City's averaging over four and a half runs a game.
- 6:16Hmm.
- 6:19All right, again, Rojas takes his lead. Throw over there, and he's back.
- 6:26Bill told you the umpires tonight are Bill Holler at the plate.
- 6:30Rookie Joe Brinkman at first base, Ron Luciano is at second base, and Dave Phillips at third.
- 6:35It's good to see Ron Luciano again. It was here that he became ill before a game last year and missed the rest of the season.
- 6:43Quick throw to first state.
- 6:50Ball and a strike to count on Amos Otis.
- 6:53These two clubs meet again out here tomorrow night.
- 6:56Seven-thirty ball game, and then the Yankees go on the road.
- 7:00The order, Chicago, and out to the Twin Cities, Minnesota, a beautiful part of the country.
- 7:07Klein ready again, comes off the stretch, sets below the belt and deals, and the pitch is cut on and fouled back.
- 7:19Ball and two strikes.
- 7:24Otis has stepped out again. He steps out after every swing.
- 7:30He can do a lot of things. He has good speed, good arm, good defensive outfielder.
- 7:36He can hit for average, hit for distance.
- 7:42Six doubles, one triple, four homers.
- 7:45Twelve runs, but it ends. Quick throw to first, no play.
- 7:49Rojas gets back.
- 7:54And Otis has stepped out again.
- 8:00Now Klein looks down. The throw to Munson, picks up his side.
- 8:03Wide and left, Mercer in center, Matty Lowe in right, is spread out on Otis.
- 8:08White, the deep man, in left field. Here comes the pitch.
- 8:10Cut on, ground ball, left side. Nettles up with it, throws it second out there, back to first save.
- 8:16And going in hard at second base, Rojas, and he's shaken up.
- 8:20Rojas is slow getting up, and now the umpire out there at second base, Ron Luciano, is calling Charlie Lowe and Harry Dunlop out to check on Rojas.
- 8:30He went in hard to the bag.
- 8:32Nettles went to his left to field that ball and had a little trouble getting it out of his glove.
- 8:38The trainer, Jim Dudley, comes out now to take a look, and Rojas under his own paw, and up he's limping a little bit though.
- 8:44We'll have to see whether he can continue in this game or not.
- 8:47Right now we'll say this is the New York Yankee Baseball Network. We pause for station identification.
- 8:52Hope you're enjoying the game. This is Bill Edwardson, the host of Breakfast with Bill.
- 8:55In the morning we have music, we have comedy on the Grub Club, we have Dave Smith on sports.
- 9:00The only thing we lack is you. Where have you been? Join us in the morning on WTVK FM Rensselaer.
- 9:08All right, right now, time is called as Munson goes out to the mound.
- 9:14That was not really a good double play ball. Nettles had to go deep to his left.
- 9:18Then he had a little trouble getting the ball out of the glove, and there was a lot of speed to contend with there too.
- 9:24Otis gets down the line very quickly.
- 9:27It's all with two outs, a runner at first. Here is John Mayberry, the big first baseman.
- 9:32Mayberry is hitting 224, but he has five home runs and 19 runs let in.
- 9:38He's a left-hand hitter. Now he steps out.
- 9:45Now he's back in again.
- 9:55Brian checks his runner and deals down low, ball one to Mayberry.
- 10:06Just happened to think, Bill, what our first night game at Yankee Stadium.
- 10:10Did it? No? Did it? Friday we were rained out. We didn't get to play that one, but this one is, isn't it?
- 10:19By the one-hole pitch, to Mayberry. Low and outside, ball two, two balls and no strikes.
- 10:26Mayberry is a big kid, 6'3", 220 pounds, 23 years old from Detroit, Michigan.
- 10:36He has attended the University of Michigan.
- 10:40He bounces around there on that batter's box. Up on his right toes and his left toes.
- 10:47Holds the bat. Here's the pitch. Check swing and it's fouled straight back.
- 10:51Two balls and one strike to Mayberry.
- 10:58Mayberry was up and down with the Houston Astros.
- 11:01Last year was the first time he had a chance to play a full season for a major league team.
- 11:08He got 149 games and responded with a 298 batting average, 25 home runs, and even 100 runs let in.
- 11:16Two balls and a strike to him. Two outs, a runner at first, no score.
- 11:22There's the set by Klein. Spins, throws to first, save.
- 11:28Yodas can steal a base. He has three stolen bases.
- 11:32Klein keeping a close eye on him.
- 11:36Adioulu couldn't get much deeper out there in right field. He's back almost to the track.
- 11:40Don't blame him. Here's the next pitch. Outside to Mayberry, ball three, three and one.
- 11:45That would appear that Klein is trying to keep the ball away from this big slugger.
- 11:50Now Mayberry is going to think about it, walk slowly over toward the on deck circle.
- 11:56And he gets the tar rag from Ed Kirkpatrick.
- 12:00Now he's going to walk over there and talk to Kirkpatrick, picks up the rosin bag.
- 12:06Here he comes back.
- 12:13Takes a couple of practice swings.
- 12:18I don't guess McKeon has told his folks, make that pitcher wait out there. Everybody stamp it out.
- 12:24Three balls and a strike, two outs.
- 12:26Otis leads away at first base, the set by Klein. There goes Otis. The pitcher's taking ball four outside.
- 12:34So with the runner going, Mayberry draws a walk.
- 12:39And the next batter will be Ed Spanky Kirkpatrick.
- 12:50We see an infielder, Bobby Floyd, running down toward the bullpen, perhaps to warm up.
- 12:56Could be an indication of Rojas, but his leg to the point where he will not be able to continue in this game
- 13:02because Floyd has gone down to the bullpen and he will start throwing, loosening up his throwing arm down there.
- 13:08We'll have to see whether Rojas can come out for the bottom half of the inning or not.
- 13:15All right, two men on with two outs. Ed Kirkpatrick, left hand hitting right fielder. He can also catch.
- 13:23And he can play first base.
- 13:26First pitch joined. Strive gets called. Strive got it over with the knees. Kirkpatrick is hitting 375.
- 13:3418 base hits, including six doubles and three home runs with 14 runs batted in.
- 13:47Fine check second for Otis. And his pitch to Kirkpatrick. Cut out, hit on the ground, a clock.
- 13:52He's up with a clip to Gene Michael at second base. They have the fourth on Mayberry to retire the side.
- 13:58A 4-6, force out. And for the KC Royals, no runs, no hits. There were two walks and two men left.
- 14:06At the end of the top half of the first inning, the straw. Kansas City nothing and New York coming to bat.
- 14:12Where you believe the world, the world gets around. Where you believe the world, the world gets around.
- 14:40Abso Financial Services believes in people from Hoboken, New Jersey to Hilo, Hawaii, from Missoula, Montana to Melbourne, Australia.
- 14:48Over one million people every year with over one million loans for everything from appliances to x-rays.
- 14:55So when you come into Abso, you come into money. Because if you deserve the credit at Abso, you get it.
- 15:01Where you believe the world, the world gets around. Where you believe the world, the world gets around.
- 15:14The Yankees and the Royals will play here again tomorrow night. It will be young, hard-throwing right-hander George Koch Medich on the mound with the Yankees.
- 15:22And Slitdorf, Paul Slitdorf, a left-hander, will be going for the Kansas City Royals.
- 15:29Medich has won two games and lost none. Slitdorf has won three, and he's lost one.
- 15:34All right, right. And Bobby Floyd has come in to play second base for Rojas, hurting his leg going in a second as a baserunner is out of the ballgame.
- 15:42The pitch to Horace Clark is low ball one. Clark is hitting 274. He has 20 base hits, one double, five runs done at him.
- 15:56This ball, too, had to play for low again, two balls and no strikes. Ken Wright is making his third start and sixth appearance of the season.
- 16:06He's relieved three times. He comes in with a strike, two and one. Wright has won one, lost none.
- 16:17He's pitched 17 innings, and Clark swings a misser.
- 16:23This guy's supposed to be what you call super swift. He has all the pictures, a good hard fastball, a curve ball, and a slider.
- 16:30But he relies mainly on his fastball.
- 16:32Oh, there it was, and he struck Clark out with a high fastball. Wright tens of times to be a bit wild.
- 16:39He so far this year has given up a walk for each inning pitch and a base hit for each inning pitch.
- 16:49He struck out a man for each inning pitch.
- 16:55All right, Clark down on strikes. Here is Roy White.
- 17:01Third ball is in on White for a strike. Roy is batting 176, 13 hits, all of them singles, five runs let it in.
- 17:14Wright finds, puts the fastball inside, spins wide away from the plate.
- 17:25One ball, one strike, one out, nobody out, and no score here in the first inning.
- 17:29Next pitch, fastball is in for a strike, two calls.
- 17:40Wright looks over to his dugout. Six-two, 225 pounds.
- 17:46These are big ones. One-two deal, fastball inside at the shoulders, two and two.
- 17:52Wright last year won one and lost two in 17 games, all in relief.
- 17:59Two-two pitch, low and inside, ball three.
- 18:03Wright appeared in 30 games, all in relief, at Omaha last year as well, and there he won four and lost three.
- 18:17This year he has won it all in his lifetime record against the Yankees, one win and two losses.
- 18:22Three-two pitch to Roy White, swung on and lying out on the right field. That's going to be in for a base hit.
- 18:28And on the roll by the right fielder, Ed Kirkpatrick, and Roy White is on with a one-out single.
- 18:36So the Yankees get the first base hit in this ballgame, and the batter will be Matty Allou, the right fielder.
- 18:43Matty is hitting 333, based on 16 for 48.
- 18:48The 11 singles, four doubles, one home run, and five runs done and in.
- 18:55Bobby Mercer is out on deck.
- 19:02Berman Munson is the only right-hand batter in the Yankee lineup tonight.
- 19:08Well, of course, the three switch hitters, Clark, White, and Michael.
- 19:13Pitch to Matty, strike, one is called, over at the knees, and the third baseman, Paul Shaw, came charging in to protect against the Bunch.
- 19:24A report is being made on the condition of Cookie Rojas, and Bill White will pass it along.
- 19:29Pitch is inside, backs Allou up.
- 19:31Horace Clark, when he came down in second, Frank, stepped on the ankle of Rojas, and he's been spiked.
- 19:38He expects to be back within a day or so.
- 19:42That's the story on Rojas, spiked in the ankle, going in to break up a possible double play.
- 19:49One-one pitch here, and Allou runs up to button, takes it low, ball two, and that pitch crossed up the catcher, Fran Healy, and he goes out there now to talk to Ken Wright.
- 20:07Two balls and one strike to Matty Allou.
- 20:21Matty chokes out several inches on the bat handle.
- 20:25Roy White takes his lead, the pitch is low and inside.
- 20:29Three balls and one strike.
- 20:37And we'll keep an eye on White. He's looking across the diamond, that third base coach, Dick Hauser, Elston Howard, of course, coaching him first for the Yankees.
- 20:46We'll see if White is running on a three-one pitch. He does not go, and it is taken outside, ball four.
- 20:52So Matty Allou draws a walk. That moves White to second, and with two on and one out, the batter is Bobby Mercer.
- 21:00The Yankees' center fielder is hitting an even 300, 21 for 70.
- 21:07Two doubles, three home runs, and 11 runs got it in.
- 21:13Mercer leads the Yankees in runs scored with 14.
- 21:18He is second in runs that had ended with 11. Greg Nettles, who comes out on deck, leads the club at RBIs with 12.
- 21:26Mercer wants Bill Haller to take a look at the baseball, and Haller checks it out, and he takes it out of play.
- 21:33Clips another one to Ken Wright.
- 21:39Very possibly, Matty Allou noticed something on that baseball. It's all Bobby.
- 21:48At any rate, without a pitch being made, Greg Mercer gets the ball thrown out. He swings on it, and it's a fly ball.
- 21:53It's fairly deep left-center field. Back goes Panella, the left fielder. He's there, and he makes the catch.
- 21:58And the runners were playing it halfway. They go back.
- 22:03Mercer flies to Panella in deep left center. Two outs. The batter will be Greg Nettles, the Yankee third baseman, hitting 206,
- 22:14but leading the club in home runs with four, and in runs got it in with 12.
- 22:22Nettles, another left-hander, and Ronnie Bloomberg comes out on deck.
- 22:38Nettles down on the end of the backhand. The runners again take their lead. They play Nettles as full hitter,
- 22:43the infield and the outfield around to the right side. The pitch splits the plate for a called strike.
- 22:55Infield is backed off.
- 23:01Now the 0-1 delivery. Fastball is low, 1-1.
- 23:12Panella shades over towards center. The center fielder, Amosota, is well over in the gap toward right center field.
- 23:17And Kirkpatrick deep and right. The pitch, cut on, hit on the ground, a second base.
- 23:22Dug up there by Bobby Floyd. He puts on the first to retire the side.
- 23:26And for the Yankees, no runs, a base hit, two-manter left. At the end of one inning, the score, the Yankees nothing,
- 23:31and Kansas City nothing.
- 23:33All the power mowers on the market today start a job you have to finish, except one, the new Bowlands mulching mower.
- 23:41It cuts your grass. It also cuts and recuts the clippings into a fine mulch that disappears down into your lawn,
- 23:47out of sight, so you have no clippings to rake up, no cumbersome grass bags to empty. The job is finished in one pass.
- 23:55The Bowlands mulching mower is not only quicker, it's safer because there's no dangerous discharge shoot.
- 24:01This also means you can trim close to lawn borders with both sides of the mower.
- 24:05So if you've been emptying grass bags or raking up unsightly clippings, try the new Bowlands mulching mower,
- 24:11the one that does the whole job in one pass.
- 24:14In 22-inch push and self-propelled models, as well as an 18-inch trimmer, manual or electric start, the Bowlands mulching mowers.
- 24:23They'll keep you a good yard ahead. See them now. There are 21 Bowlands servicing dealers in the WQBK listing area.
- 24:30See the one near you. Distributed by ACA Outdoor Power Equipment, Inc.
- 24:35Looking at the scoreboard, the California Angels did not score their half of the first inning in their game against Detroit and Detroit,
- 24:43senior against the Primon. And one other score, Texas nothing, Boston nothing, in Boston after two innings of play and against Lee.
- 24:53And the National, Houston Philadelphia, no score after two. Royce against Carlton. A couple of former Cardinal left-handers pitching against each other.
- 25:03Right here, the score is nothing, nothing. We're going into the top half of second inning.
- 25:08Luke Pennella's in, and here's Frank Messer.
- 25:11Luke Pennella, right-hand batter.
- 25:15Pennella hitting 289. He has hit only one home run, but has 15 runs battered in.
- 25:24And he can't hit the long ball. He takes a pitch right in there for a call strike from Steve Klein.
- 25:32Al McCray on deck, and then Paul Shaw.
- 25:38No ball, one strike count to Luke Pennella.
- 25:41Pretty well up front in the batter's box. Bans quite a bit at the knees. Swings on a pitch, bouncing ball hits a third.
- 25:47Greg Nettles has it. Fires out across. That's all for Pennella. There's one away.
- 25:56So all of the outs so far have been on ground balls, and if you're a Yankee fan and a Steve Klein fan and knowledgeable about Klein,
- 26:04you know that that's an indication he has his stuff, because basically, like Scott Elmire, he is a sinker ball pitcher.
- 26:11One out, nobody out, and Hal McCray in the batter. McCray, the designated hitter tonight, a right-hand batter.
- 26:16And the pitch to him. Curb ball for a strike. Beautifully thrown curve. McCray is hitting 175.
- 26:23Two home runs, nine runs, battered in.
- 26:28No score in this game. The windup by Klein and his pitch. Another curve ball hit deep down the left field line, and it is foul.
- 26:37In the seats, but foul.
- 26:46He got a lot of it. Pulled it just foul.
- 26:54Steve Klein's lifetime record against Kansas City, one win and two losses.
- 26:59Steve, making his pitch start this year, he has pitched to one complete game. It was a two-hit shutout against Cleveland.
- 27:05Steve with an earned run average of 3.86.
- 27:10Into the line, the 0-2 pitch. Low and outside, a waste pitch, one and two.
- 27:16The temperature at game time tonight was 60 degrees here at Yankee Stadium.
- 27:29Klein has the sign, into the windup, and here's his pitch. Breaking ball. Oh, Mutsen brought that was a strike, but Haller says no.
- 27:39A breaking pitch. Ball two, two and two.
- 27:47Paul Shaw, the third baseman, is on deck.
- 27:52Klein ready. The kick and the pitch. Low and outside, and the count is full, three and two.
- 28:09Klein peers down to Mutsen and delivers. Pitch is hit on the ground foul.
- 28:15Just past the third base coach, Harry Dunlop. Count Rye, three and two. At Texas at Boston game, in the third inning,
- 28:23Stratus. Cleveland at Minnesota, rained out. California, Detroit, Baltimore at Chicago, and Oakland at Milwaukee, slightly later starts.
- 28:33Three-two pitch again. Fastball, drill foul, just outside of third.
- 28:39Again, McCray got around well on a Klein pitch. Looks like McCray is a lowball hitter, Frank.
- 28:46He really rips that ball the batter around, and the ball's down low.
- 28:51Quick bat. Yep.
- 28:54Again, the three-two pitch. Get on the ground, just foul, again outside of third, and that ball was stung.
- 29:04Again, McCray comes back. No score in this game. We're in the top half of the second inning.
- 29:09If you're wondering about the lateness, we had about a 25-minute delay because of a light rain that fell before the start of the game.
- 29:18To wind up, the three-two pitch again. Curbball is fouled back.
- 29:24Back off the mast of Bill Haller, the plate umpire, and the count holds three and two.
- 29:30One National League score. Houston at Philadelphia, nothing to nothing. They're in the third inning.
- 29:37Mets are off tonight. Three-two pitch again. Get down the left field line. It is a fair ball, going for base seven, probably two.
- 29:47McCray on his way to second base, and pulls in standing up with a double.
- 29:53Looks like he about went right down off the bat handle, looked it down the third base line, and he, as Bill White notices, he is holding his hands down there. That one's stung.
- 30:06I think his hands are a little sore. He got really jammed. Fine, you know, he's basically a thicker ball pitcher, so all his pitches will be low.
- 30:14It looks like McCray's a low ball hitter. That time, he's got the ball up a little bit and in a little bit, and really jammed him,
- 30:20but now, really strong enough to get enough wood on the ball just above his hands and loop it out on the left for a couple.
- 30:27All right, that's the first base hit for the Royals, and the batter is Paul Schaal, third baseman, right-hand hitter. Schaal is hitting 270.
- 30:36Stretched by Claw, and he checks the base runner, and the pitch to Schaal. Low ball work.
- 30:42Michael over toward the hole on Schaal. The outfield is spread out, with the deep man being white in left.
- 30:48Nettles does not play tight to the line. He is fairly wide. Clark shades toward second.
- 30:54The right side of the infield is pretty well open, and a 1-0 pitch will be coming.
- 31:00Here it is. A ball must have been just a bit inside. Two balls or no strikes.
- 31:10Schaal has been up 74 times with 20 hits, four doubles, nine runs, got it in.
- 31:20He came back from a very serious beating up a few years ago.
- 31:27Fine, checks McCray at second. Kicks and deals. Pitch is hit in the air out toward shallow right center. Back goes Clark. In comes Mercer. Clark calls and makes the catch.
- 31:41Morris Clark going back into shallow right center to retire Schaal. Two outs, and the catcher, Fran Healy, steps in.
- 31:51Healy has a right hand batter hitting 158. Three hits in 19 trips. Two of his three hits have been doubles.
- 32:11Fine looks back at second for Hal McCray. No score here in the top of the second inning. There's the set by the young Yankee right hander and his pitch breaking ball on the outside corner. Strike one.
- 32:28On deck, Freddie Patek.
- 32:35Healy straight away in the batter's box down at the end of the bat handle. Gloves on both hands. Pitch is inside, drives him back.
- 32:47No, Healy was originally selected by the Royals and the Cleveland Indians back in 68. And the Royals sent him to the San Francisco Giants for a Bob Garibaldi pitchers in 1970. And now he's made the return back to the Royals.
- 33:02Okay, Bill. One-one pitch will be coming to him. Slowing outside. Two balls and one strike. From Holyoke, Massachusetts. Fran Healy. Big kid, 6'5", 210.
- 33:18Got a long way to get down there behind the plate. Like Tom Heller. Oh, giant catchers. Big fella. Alright, two-one pitch coming. Get on the ground at third. Dug up by Nettles.
- 33:34He throws to first. We gotta tell you why we're laughing. The base runner McCray ran right into it. All Heller had to do was reach out and tag him for the out. He threw across instead.
- 33:43And the side is retired. No runs of base hit. A man left. And at the end of the top half of the second inning, the score. Kansas City, Norfolk, and New York nothing.
- 34:13You know, regardless of what every kind of product you've been there, there's one brand that stands you cut above the other.
- 34:23When it comes to a beer, the one that you cut above, Schaefer comes on first beer bright, first beer rewarding, every beer through.
- 34:31The first Rossi cold glass you're very lucky. That's why Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 34:38And brother, that's the beer you've got coming.
- 34:56Bottom half of the second inning, Rodney Bloomberg will lead off with the Yankees to be followed by Thurman Munson and then Johnny Callison.
- 35:03Bloomberg is hitting 278. Had quite a second game Sunday, four base hits.
- 35:13Bloomberg left hand on her. Rodney has the deciding hit in the first game Sunday.
- 35:20And he looks at the fastball outside.
- 35:31And he winds again and deals. Fastball is fouled back upstairs.
- 35:35Trying to get a fastball by Bloomberg. He's a good fastball hitter.
- 35:41And the fastball, of course, as Bill White mentioned before, is Wright's. Big pitch.
- 35:46It's going to be interesting. One-one deal. Fastball has gone out in this.
- 35:51So right now is challenging Bloomberg with his fastball. A ball and two strikes.
- 36:02One-two pitch. Fouled back upstairs.
- 36:08He's telling quick this guy can't right, Frank, because Ron, who is a good fastball hitter, is fouling that ball off on the left side.
- 36:15Fouling it off.
- 36:21Wind the pitch again, and it's high. Two balls, two strikes.
- 36:31Thurman Munson is on deck, and then Johnny Callison here in the bottom half of the second. No score.
- 36:37Wright delivers. This time he curves him and just missed with it. Three balls, two strikes.
- 36:42The second baseman, Bobby Floyd, playing back to the edge of the grass down on Bloomberg with Pup-Tex shaded toward the bag at second.
- 36:50The outfield slightly to right. The pitch. High. Ball four.
- 36:55He curved him and missed up high again. Bloomberg is on, and that is the second walk allowed by Ken Wright.
- 37:01As we told you, Wright has averaged a walk-in inning so far this year.
- 37:06He walked one man in the first.
- 37:12Actually, in the first inning, he matched his yearly figures with giving up one walk, struck out one man, and allowed one base hit.
- 37:19And he has averaged one of each for an inning so far.
- 37:23The Yankees on the right-hand hitter now, Thurman Munson. Thurman batting 382.
- 37:31Best start of his major league career, a 10-game hitting streak going. Takes low ball one.
- 37:37Munson is currently second among the top ten hitters in the American League.
- 37:47Matt Kelly of Chicago is the number one hitter. You know, Munson hitting 382, second to Kelly, and Kelly is about 100 points ahead of him.
- 37:56Matt Kelly is off to an unbelievable start for tuning. Kelly is hitting, what, Bill, 486, you tell me?
- 38:02You've got Munson by 104 points.
- 38:07He takes a strike. The count evens one and one.
- 38:18Runner at first, nobody out. Mayberry holding on Bloomberg. The pitch.
- 38:22On the outside, corner of strike two called. Munson is arguing the call with plate umpire Bill Haller.
- 38:31Thurman told him it sounded outside.
- 38:37Haller's saying, not to me it didn't.
- 38:40Looks like it was on the outside corner.
- 38:44Thurman too. Gallison on deck.
- 38:52Stretched by right is Fetch. Fast ball. It's slowly right side of the mound.
- 38:55Fielded by the pitcher. Flips to Mayberry at first. In time to get Munson.
- 38:59On the play, Bloomberg goes to second. Munson is out and we're going to step out.
- 39:03This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network. We pause for station identification.
- 39:07Hi, this is Jack Hopkey. There are sports in the afternoon at WQBK FM Rensselaer, even when they're on at Yankee games.
- 39:13Dave Smith is with me on my show at a quarter before each hour between three and seven.
- 39:17OTB results, socks, and a lot of good music too. So stop by the Jack Hopkey Show three to seven.
- 39:26Here is Johnny Callison, the Yankees' designated hitter tonight.
- 39:29And right starts him off with a fast ball inside. Ball one.
- 39:35Callison is hitting 167. He has five base hits, three singles, two doubles, and three runs better than.
- 39:43Gene Michael is on deck. The pitch. Popped up.
- 39:50Right near the play. Healy looking for it. Now in foul territory. He's under it and one hands it.
- 39:55He almost lost it. He had to reach back over his left shoulder and got it actually in the webbing of his catcher's mitt.
- 40:04So Callison pops out to the catcher Fran Healy in foul territory.
- 40:12Two outs, one bag at second. And the batter is Gene Michael, the Yankee shortstop.
- 40:18Michael is hitting an even 200, 11 for 55. He has nine singles, one double, one home run, and six runs better than.
- 40:27Switch hitter up there batting left. Right straddles the rubber. Out throws in again and looks down to Healy for his side.
- 40:35Checks Bloomberg at second and fires a fast ball on inside. Ball one.
- 40:55Right looks back to second and delivers the plate. Swing and a miss. Got around late on the fast ball. One and one.
- 41:07They allow Bloomberg a good lead off second. Put Pottsack over in the hole.
- 41:13And Floyd backed off. The next pitch inside spins him out. Two balls and a strike.
- 41:31Right checks back and comes in with a fast ball inside at the hands. Ball three.
- 41:37So right behind the count now to Gene Michael, three and one. Two outs, Bloomberg at second base.
- 41:44No score here in the second inning. It's a set. Three one six. Come on, pops up again and fouls round.
- 41:52Back comes Healy. He may have room, may not. Back to the screen, can't get to it. Ball is on the screen.
- 42:00Freeze that time, blew it away from him and back on the screen. Wolf count three and two.
- 42:18These two teams play again here tomorrow night. Then the Yankees go on the road for a short spell to play the White Sox in Chicago.
- 42:27And the Minnesota Twins out in Bloomington, Minnesota. Three two pitch to Michael.
- 42:32Bloomberg leads at second. Michael rides a face hit into right field.
- 42:36After the ball Kirkpatrick may be a play to play. Here comes Bloomberg. Here's the throw. He slides, he's straight.
- 42:42Throw gets away. Change down by the pitcher right all the way to the backstop.
- 42:47And on to second base goes Michael. The Yankees make the lead, learn nothing.
- 42:53Kirkpatrick firing through from right field trying to shut down Bloomberg.
- 42:59Rodney scores as the throw gets away from the catcher Healy.
- 43:03It's a single and a run butted in for Michael. And Michael goes to second base on the throw home.
- 43:09And on the throw home a frank message to catcher Fran Healy was given an error for allowing that ball to go through it.
- 43:21To allow Michael to go to second base.
- 43:25Alright here's Ars Clark. He's struck out his first time up and he is almost hit by the pitch.
- 43:31Inside almost got in.
- 43:36He really got out of there in a hurry. That's a, might have to say a tough error to say.
- 43:42It is. Evidently the official scorer saw Gene Michael stop at first base.
- 43:46The first base for Mayberry gave a good fake. We kept him there. Then there's the ball that's by. Gene went on to second.
- 43:51Okay. Clark gets a base hit up the middle. The line put over second. Michael around third. He'll score.
- 43:57And the Yankees really turn up it.
- 44:01Gene Michael dropping the plate. On a base hit by Clark.
- 44:14Now the Yankees break on top of the Royals 2 to nothing.
- 44:18And the batter now is Roy Wy. Roy single in the first inning.
- 44:28The runs about to end for Michael number seven. And for Clark number six of the year.
- 44:35The fighter's now hitting 187. Swings on the first pitch. And he fouls it down off his right foot.
- 44:45White fouling one straight down off his foot. Strike one.
- 44:58Clark at first. Mayberry holding him on. Quick throw over there by Wright. No tag. He is back in plenty of time.
- 45:13And Manny Alou is on deck. There goes Clark. The pitch is taken low. The throw to second base. He's safe.
- 45:29Stolen base for Horace Clark is second of the year. White took the pitch for a ball one and one.
- 45:44Set by Wright. His next pitch. Inside with a fastball. Almost hit White.
- 45:50I'll tell you one thing. They're not going to dig in on Ken Wright.
- 45:56Oh he's been missing inside even and away from right handers. So evidently he's got a groove in there.
- 46:02When the right hand is up there he's been aiming at the inside part of the plate.
- 46:06And when the left hand is up there he's still bringing a fastball inside. And when he misses inside he's further inside.
- 46:11He almost hit Clark. And then Clark almost hit him with a line drive back up the middle. And he almost got White there.
- 46:18Two balls in one strike. The catcher here he had gone after the mound. He's back now.
- 46:22In the crotch, gives the side, sets up a target and here's the pitch. Cut on and miss.
- 46:29That one got away from Healy up the third baseline. But he kept the ball in front of him. No chance for Clark to move up.
- 46:36Two and two to count. Yankees in front two nothing here in the bottom half of the second inning.
- 46:45Two outs. Clark at second. Two balls two strikes to White. Wright brings it and it's high. Ball three full count.
- 47:05Wright ready with a three-two pitch. It's on the way and he's up high with an off-speed pitch. Ball four.
- 47:13Delroy White goes down to first base. Time is called and here comes Jack McKinn.
- 47:21The manager of the Kansas City Royals. That is the third walk.
- 47:29Given up by Wright. The Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 47:34Looks like McKinn wants a pitcher. He didn't waste much time as he got to the third base foul line. He motioned with his left hand so he must want a left-hander.
- 47:46Looks like Mike Jackson, a left-hander, getting ready to get into the Dots and then come on into the ball game.
- 47:51So super swift Kenny Wright is taking a super swift exit. And while they bring in the next pitcher I'll give you some scores.
- 48:00The Texas Rangers picked up three runs in the top of the third and they lead the Boston Red Sox 3-0 after three full innings of play.
- 48:08And against Lee in that ball game. The California Angels picked up a run in their half of the second inning.
- 48:13And the Tigers are batting in the last of the second. The Angels ahead 1-0. Zinger against Primus.
- 48:21And the National League, the Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies putting up a lot of zeros. No score with the Phillies batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 48:30Royce against Steve Carlton, Montal and Atlanta. No score after two. More against Gentry.
- 48:40So Steve Wright leaves. Kenny Wright leaves. And it's Mike Jackson, a left-hander who's from Patterson, New Jersey.
- 48:51Still lives in Patterson. They call this fellow Twiggy. He's a left-hander. 6-3, 195. Fits last year at Kansas City.
- 48:59Split the Cs between Kansas City and Omaha.
- 49:02Well, I may have... No, they just announced over to PA, Wayne Simpson, but that's not Simpson.
- 49:10Simpson's a little right-hander. That's right. You're right.
- 49:13Bob Shepard shook me up there for just a second. He misread the number.
- 49:17Simpson's a right-hander who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds. He's a big fella, too. He's a little chubbier than Mike Jackson.
- 49:26This is a left-hander, Mike Jackson. Here's a correction. Jackson split last year with Omaha and Kansas City.
- 49:38At Kansas City, he started three games for them. He was in seven total, so he relieved in four others.
- 49:44He won one, and he lost two. So Mike Jackson in there now a left-hander pitching for the Kansas City Royals.
- 49:57All right, first man to face him will be Matty Alou.
- 50:05And the Aggie switch hitters will be swinging around and batting from the other side.
- 50:13He completes his warm-up throws. The Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 50:18Two outs. Matty Alou walked in the first inning. McKinney has allowed two runs, three hits. Walked three and struck out one.
- 50:31And now the tall left-hander, Mike Jackson, ready to work for Matty Alou.
- 50:35The runners edge away, and the pitch. Strike call to slider.
- 50:45Matty Alou hitting 333. Bobby Mercer is on deck.
- 50:56A look back to second, the kick and the pitch. Down low this time, one and one.
- 51:00Mike Jackson's first start last year. In fact, the first major league start was against the Yankees, and he won that ballgame.
- 51:09He won seven innings, gave up seven hits, and he won five to one.
- 51:14Okay, Bill. He deals again, and this one is in the dirt, blocked nicely by the catcher, Fran Healy.
- 51:22Well, that was his only win last year, too. He won one and lost two.
- 51:35And in the dirt again, ball three.
- 51:38Folks over in Patterson, New Jersey may remember Jackson. He was quite a pitcher at Patterson's Central High School.
- 51:46He had two consecutive no-hitters, in which he struck out 42 batters in 20 innings.
- 51:53You don't forget things like that. He misses here, ball four. Matty Alou walks, and the bases are loaded.
- 52:00Clark goes on to third, white to second. Matty Alou on at first, drawing his second walk in the ballgame.
- 52:07And now Bobby Mercer with the bases loaded and two outs.
- 52:18Mike Jackson won game in high school, Bill, struck out 22 men in the ballgame, and lost it. That's tough.
- 52:27He's ready to work the Mercer, and the pitch. He gets a breaking ball in, strike one.
- 52:34Mercer is hitting 296. He flat out deep to the left fielder, Pennella, his first time up.
- 52:40They play him to full, the outfield and the infield.
- 52:47No balls and one strike. Bases loaded, two outs. Clark at third, white at second, Matty Alou at first.
- 52:53Greg Nettles is on deck. Short stretch by Jackson. He kicks and deals, and he's low and outside,
- 53:00heeling to his knees to save it, one and one.
- 53:10Yankees have scored twice here in the second inning, leading the ballgame 2-0.
- 53:14Next pitch, Jack swaying in a strike ball, the ball and two strikes.
- 53:19Bobby started to go, changed his mind, and now Jackson has the count in his favor. One ball, two strikes.
- 53:34And then when Mercer comes up, the fans sort of edge up on their seats. Here it comes, hit on the ground,
- 53:38a first base, out it is a fair ball, it hits a bag. Mayberry takes it, steps on first.
- 53:43Mercer is out and the side is retired. It hit the bag, took a crazy hop, but Mayberry came up with it.
- 53:50So Mercer is out to Mayberry unassisted. The Yankees get two runs on two hits.
- 53:56There was one error and three men are left on base. At the end of two innings of play,
- 54:00the score is New York 2 and Kansas City nothing.
- 54:09At the Getty Oil Company, we sell premium gasoline for a few cents less per gallon than most other major premiums.
- 54:16Now there are three ways of looking at what that difference in price can mean to you.
- 54:21One, the money you save. If you drive around 12,000 miles a year and use Getty premium instead of another major premium,
- 54:30you save around $30. Two, the extra gas you get.
- 54:35The $30 you save by using Getty premium is enough money to buy another 75 gallons of Getty premium.
- 54:43And three, the extra miles you get. That 75 extra gallons of Getty premium is enough gas to take you about 1,000 miles.
- 54:53A $30 savings, 75 more gallons or 1,000 more miles.
- 54:59That's the difference between Getty premium and most other major premiums.
- 55:07All right, a quick look on the scoreboard. California 1, Detroit nothing at the end of two.
- 55:11Bill Singer for the Angels and Woody Friedman for the Tigers.
- 55:14Cleveland and Minnesota rained out. Texas 3, Boston nothing at the end of three and one-and-a-half innings of play.
- 55:21Rich hand for Texas. Bill Lee starting that ballgame for Boston.
- 55:25And those are the American League scores. Bill White will give you the National League scores as he takes over the play-by-play.
- 55:31Bill?
- 55:32All right, Franklin. Here's friendly Poptek against Klein. And Steve misses outside with the breaking ball.
- 55:37We're going into the top half, the third inning. The Yankees ahead, two-nothing. Poptek has been up once.
- 55:42He bounced the third. He bats right at it. He's only 5'4". Weighs about 145 pounds.
- 55:48The next bench is inside. It's one-and-one.
- 55:51Meadows enclosed at third for him. Michael is a halfway short. Clark straight away at second.
- 55:57And Ron Bloomberg, a step-a-doo behind the bag and wide at first.
- 56:00Here's a 2-0 pitch. Ball three outside. Three balls, no strikes.
- 56:07Steve Klein so far has given up just one hit to the Royals.
- 56:13Here's a 3-0 pitch to Poptek. Ball outside. Ball four.
- 56:19This fellow's hard to pitch to. He's only 5'4".
- 56:24Better roll it up there and hope it hits a pamphlet or something and jumps up in the strike zone.
- 56:31So Poptek walks. He's on it first. And here's Bobby Floyd, the second baseman.
- 56:37Floyd got into the ball game when Kukiroa slid in the second.
- 56:40Kukiroa got spiked by the Yankees' second baseman, Horace Clark, and he had to leave the ball game.
- 56:45Floyd came on and took his place in the bottom of the first.
- 56:47So Floyd's making his first trip to the plate here tonight.
- 56:52Klein stretches. Checks Poptek. A pitch. Swung on.
- 56:56Wide drive. Pace in. Left field. Roy White in quickly.
- 56:59He bobbles the ball and Poptek strikes it bad and he'll make it standing up.
- 57:03White throws the ball in the second. And held it first. Paces Floyd.
- 57:08So if Bobby Floyd had a single left field and as White bobbled that ball out there in left field,
- 57:15Poptek shifted gears and went into third base. So White has given an error.
- 57:20So Poptek down at third. Floyd on it first. And here's Amos Otis, the center fielder.
- 57:29Otis bounced into a force out his first time up. Hits right-handed. Having a good year.
- 57:34Just under 300. He has four home runs, 12 runs better than.
- 57:38Swings right-handed.
- 57:42Yankee Enfield looking for two with Michael playing away from second base. He's in the hole.
- 57:47He'll have a long way to go if the ball's hit to the right side.
- 57:51Bloomberg holding Floyd there at first. A stretch by Klein. The pitch. Swung on.
- 57:57And tipped. Dropped by Munch. One strike down on Otis. Yankees ahead 2-0 here in the top half of third.
- 58:05Royal threatening with runners at first and third and no outs.
- 58:10Outfield plays Otis straight away. White, Mercer, and Matty Alou in the outfield.
- 58:17Otis with a little more pine tar.
- 58:25He gets ready to get back into the box.
- 58:32On deck, John Mayberry. Yankees ahead 2-0. Royal threatening.
- 58:40Now the stretch by Klein. Checks the runners. The 0-1 pitch.
- 58:45Swung on. Line drive right to nettle. And he cannot make another throw, but he does grab that line drive off the bat of Otis.
- 58:54I tell you, that was a large base running by Potech at third and Bobby Floyd there at first. They got back in time.
- 59:02Nettle so high to his left he came down with that line drive. Usually a runner will start moving, but Potech stayed at third.
- 59:12Floyd still at first. Went away. Here's John Mayberry.
- 59:19Big stab there by Greg Nettles. Robbing. Amos Otis with a base hit.
- 59:26The Yankees still with a chance to make two here against John Mayberry. Runners still at first and third one out.
- 59:32Klein comes to the belt.
- 59:35The pitch. Line drive. Mason up the middle. Potech scores. Around second to Floyd. He'll go to third.
- 59:43He and John Mayberry will hold there at first. So Mayberry just picked up his 20th RBI of the year. He leads the league in that category.
- 59:51And the Royals now have got the Yankee leading high-ass. The Yankees lead 2-1.
- 1:00:00Mayberry didn't get that ball. He hit it well. But hit in the right spot. The Yankees are playing the full and they hit it up the middle.
- 1:00:08Potech scored. Floyd went to third. Mayberry still at first. Went away. And here's Ed Kirkpatrick, the right fielder.
- 1:00:16Kirkpatrick bouncing to a fourth. Otis first time up. He hits left-handed.
- 1:00:23Mayberry hops off at first. Bloomberg holds him. Floyd leads in third.
- 1:00:28The pitch to Kirkpatrick. Brown ball to short. Michael Hatton, he'll take it himself for one. The first. Double play.
- 1:00:36The throws in the dirt for Bloomberg. So Kirkpatrick comes into a sixth to three double play.
- 1:00:43And that's it for the Royals. They do pick up one run. On two hits. And the Eagle Man on base.
- 1:00:50In the middle of the third, the Yankees 2-Royals 1.

- 1:02:08Probably so, right? And here's Nettles against Mike Jackson.
- 1:02:14Again right, a big fireballing right-hander serving a ball game for the Royals.
- 1:02:18First pitch is a high-breaking ball cut on by Nettles.
- 1:02:20He hits it on the ground to the first baseman, Mayberry, who gloves it and wins the race of the bag, and is one away.
- 1:02:27Ken Wright went one and two-thirds innings. He allowed the two runs, both earned on three hits.
- 1:02:32Struck out one, walked three.
- 1:02:35Mike Jackson came on in his second. He's in there now.
- 1:02:40Here's Ron Bloomberg, the first baseman.
- 1:02:44Pitch to Boomer is a breaking ball. It's too low.
- 1:02:47Ron walked the first time up the score to run, so he has not been in battle patiently yet.
- 1:02:53Jack McKeon, the manager of the Royals, going with the left-hander since the Yankees have a predominantly left-handed batting order in.
- 1:02:59There's a fastball on the inside corner, and it's one and one on Bloomberg. One on, nobody on.
- 1:03:03Here in the bottom half, the Yankees ahead, two to one.
- 1:03:09Jackson winds. The left-hander deals. Down low, and in the dirt, it's two balls and a strike.
- 1:03:16Top field plays Bloomberg to pull, so does the infield. They bury deep under the line at first.
- 1:03:21Second baseman Floyd is playing over toward first and back on the grass.
- 1:03:26Breaking ball is swung on and missed by Bloomberg. It's two and two.
- 1:03:32Thurman and on deck.
- 1:03:38The two-two pitch. Breaking ball, chopped back to the mound. Jackson has it turned, throws the first base, and Bloomberg's out. Two outs.
- 1:03:46A little check swing by the Boomer. Chopped it back toward the mound, just on the first base side.
- 1:03:51Jackson hustled out of the mound and threw him out.
- 1:03:55Oh, here's Thurman Munson. Munson working with a thin game hitting streak.
- 1:04:01Went from 219 to 382, which is second in the American League. Now he's batting at 377 since he's 0-1. Bounced back to the pitcher his first time.
- 1:04:13The Royals play him to hit to the opposite field with the center fielder Otis over toward right center. Jackson misses outside with a fastball.
- 1:04:22Salarino-Sanchez has moved under the on deck circle. He would evidently take Callis's place as a designated hitter.
- 1:04:30Two outs, nobody on here in the bottom of the third. Jackson misses outside again. It's 2-0 on Munson. Yankees ahead, 5-4 up 2-1.
- 1:04:39Yankees two runs on three hits have made one error. The Royals, one run on three hits, have also made an error.
- 1:04:49Here's the two-hole pitch to Munson. Swung on, foul off in the upper deck on the right side. It's 2-1.
- 1:04:59Dick Hauser coaches third for the Yankees. Ellie Howard at first.
- 1:05:11Munson out of the batter's box. Now he's back in.
- 1:05:15And the 2-1 pitch. Head on the ground toward short. Shaw, the third baseman, cuts in front of Popdeck, throws the first base. They've got him.
- 1:05:23So Munson bounces out five degrees. Shaw, the Mayberry for the third out. For the Yankees, the third three up three down.
- 1:05:30At the end of three, Yankees two, Royals one.
- 1:05:47Every day is Dad's Day at McDonald's because McDonald's has something Dad can really sink his teeth into.
- 1:05:53It starts with a quarter pound, 100% beef patty. We cook it up just right, then serve it with ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun.

- 1:06:34Well, Greek language classes are now being held at St. Sophia Greek Church every Monday at 7 o'clock.
- 1:06:40Information can be obtained by calling Dr. Spirovan Koudouris. The doctor's number is 482-5377. That's 482-5377.
- 1:06:55He needs 35 more to tie.
- 1:07:01Cameron Hanks still pounding. Right here the score is 2-1 Yankees. We're going to the top of the fourth and Lou Pennella will lead off with the Royals.
- 1:07:10Pennella bounced to the third base, Pennello's his first time up so he's 0-1. Lou batting at 2-8-6.
- 1:07:18Steve Klein over the head and the first pitch. A breaking ball that's too low.
- 1:07:25Pennella, Hal McCrae and Paul Shaw in that order for the Royals as we go into the top of the fourth.
- 1:07:33Pennella usually hits the ball very sharp. Doesn't run well. Good hitter. The 1-0 pitch from Klein.
- 1:07:42Fastball hit on the ground and shortstop right at Michael. He takes it up, throws it over to Bloomberg and Pennella's out. One away.
- 1:07:52This is the New York Yankee baseball network. Let's follow up with the station identification.
- 1:07:57This is WMCA New York. Hi, this is John Stewart.
- 1:08:00I'm here with an invitation to all sports fans to give me a call some night on Sports Talk. I'm here weekday nights from 7 till 9 working around the Yankees this season, Sundays 2. This is WQBK FM Rensselaer.
- 1:08:14Here's Hal McCrae, the designated hitter. Swings on her first pitch and chops the third. Charged by Nettle's quick throw to first their two outs.
- 1:08:22Hey, that's McCrae getting ready to fly down the line. He hustles. They just got him by half a step.
- 1:08:28Two away now. Here's Paul Shaw, the third baseman.
- 1:08:34Nobody on here in the fourth. The Yankees ahead 2 to 1. Shaw 0 for 1. Popped to the second baseman Clark. Back in the second inning.
- 1:08:47They play Shaw straight away with White deep in the left. Klein over the head and the first pitch. Swung on. Chopped up and way up in the air. Klein has it.
- 1:08:56That was the first. They've got him. Paul was chopped off to play to Baltimore chop. Went way up in the air. Steve Klein a couple of steps to his right for a third base off the mound.
- 1:09:04Got the ball and got it over to Bloomberg and turned it over to third out. And he's getting for Klein. He kept the Royals in the infield.
- 1:09:10Three up, three down. In the middle of the fourth. The Yankees lead the Kansas City Royals 2 to 1.
- 1:09:19Well, some big dates coming up here soon at Yankee Stadium after this next road trip. A big Sunday doubleheader with Baltimore. A very special occasion. That will be on Sunday, May 13th.
- 1:09:28A holiday afternoon game with the Texas Rangers on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th. And for the Young fans, Bat Day with the California Angels on Sunday, June 3rd.
- 1:09:37We also want to call your attention to the fabulous Yankee yearbook for 1973, which is on sale here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:09:43It's really two books in one. A colorful yearbook with biographies, marvelous photos and features, plus an extra 32-page book inserted right in the middle.
- 1:09:51This is a compilation of great newspaper clippings of Yankee Stadium history from 1923 to 1973. A real keepsake. On sale at a dollar and a half from stadium vendors and by mail for a dollar seventy-five.
- 1:10:01You can order now by sending a dollar seventy-five reach copy to Yankee yearbook, Bronx Central Post Office, Bronx 1973, Bronx, New York.
- 1:10:12All right, so, like Yankees make a change right now, and instead of Johnny Kellison, now the Bulls and is out there for Kansas City, Celareno Sanchez.
- 1:10:19And Celareno takes the ball. Sanchez batting a 222. No home runs, two runs, bat it in.
- 1:10:26The next pitch is down low. Ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:10:32Word about Jim Rayard, the report just now is that he's not playing because his knees bothering him.
- 1:10:37Balls too high, ball three. Mike Jackson has thrown three straight balls to the Yankees new designated hitter, Celareno Sanchez.
- 1:10:463-0 pitch. Call strike, it's three and one. Sanchez started the first base, but Tom Haller called him back.
- 1:10:52Bill Haller called him back. Tom Haller selling insurance. Yes, he retired from baseball didn't he?
- 1:10:58Here's a 3-1 pitch. Put on, foul straight back in the upper deck.
- 1:11:05Still 3-2 on Sanchez. It'll be Sanchez, Michael, and Horace Martin.
- 1:11:14Here's a pay-all pitch. High ball for Lutton. Sanchez walks leading off of the Yankees here in the fourth.
- 1:11:20And here's Gene Michael. Sick heel turnaround bat right handed against Jackson.
- 1:11:24He's got a big net back in the second goal in the Yankees first round of ball game.
- 1:11:28With two outs he singles Sharpey to right field, scoring Ron Bloomberg.
- 1:11:33What a ball skipped by Healy. Michael with the second base after Clark got decked by a fastball from Fin right.
- 1:11:38Off got up and singles Sharpey to center for the second run.
- 1:11:42The Yankees lead 2-1 here. No outs, Sanchez down at first here, here's Michael.
- 1:11:46Jackson comes to the belt, and the pitch. Too low a ball.
- 1:11:54They play Michael in shallow in the outfield, and Amos Otis moves three or four steps now over toward right center.
- 1:12:00Kirk Patrick, the right fielder, moves another step or two toward the line.
- 1:12:04The 1-0 pitch. Ball two outside, 2-0. Jackson has lost the play.
- 1:12:12Mike came into the ball game back in the second.
- 1:12:15And relief of Ken Wright who was knocked out. Wright went one and two thirds, gave up the Yankees two runs.
- 1:12:22Now Jackson, 2-0 pitch, runners going, the ball's looped to center.
- 1:12:25Amos Otis is there, he's got it. Now to throw the first, Sanchez is saved.
- 1:12:31That was close. Mayberry got the ball in the stretch, he scooped it but bobbled it.
- 1:12:37And Sanchez makes it back in the first base safely.
- 1:12:40Cellarino running with his head down.
- 1:12:43Decided better look up on a hit and run, and Otis got the ball easily, and his throw was a good throw to the first baseman in the dirt just a bit.
- 1:12:51And Mayberry bobbled it, allowing the Sanchez to get back to first safely.
- 1:12:55So there's one way as Michael flies off to the center fielder Otis, Sanchez still at first base, and here's Horace Clark, the second baseman.
- 1:13:09Clark is struck out and single, and that single drove in the Yankees second run back in the second.
- 1:13:13Hoss turns around, he bats right-handed against Jackson. The left-hander deals, ball's too high.
- 1:13:22Yankees ahead 2-1, you're in the bottom half of the fourth, one-off Sanchez at first base.
- 1:13:30Jackson working quickly, too quickly for Horace Clark, who steps out and time is called.
- 1:13:39Jackson 6'3", weighs 190 pounds, over in Patterson, New Jersey.
- 1:13:45Now he's ready, so is Clark. The pitch, pop foul, a lot of play in the upper deck on the right side, and it's 1-1.
- 1:13:55Tomorrow night, it'll be young, sensational right-hander, George Medich.
- 1:14:01He'll be going up against the left-hander, ball's split to her. Medich has won two games and lost none so far this year for the Yankees.
- 1:14:10Now the stretch by Jackson, the 1-1 pitch to Clark, outside ball two, it's 2-1.
- 1:14:18Paul Shaw is the third baseman. Freddie Potech is the shortstop. Bobby Floyd is the second baseman, and John Mayberry holding Sanchez there at first.
- 1:14:27It's the first baseman. Through the first, Sanchez back.
- 1:14:33Lou Pennella, Amos Otis, and Ed Kirkpatrick, the outfield for the Royals. They're playing in shallow for Clark.
- 1:14:41Here's the stretch, 7-2, 1 pitch, and it's part of the runners' goal, and he is out at second base.
- 1:14:49The throw, Kirkpatrick to Floyd covering the second baseman.
- 1:14:56Pelee, the catcher, 2-4, the second baseman covering for the second out.
- 1:15:06And the board has 3-1, so Clark must have taken the bat back.
- 1:15:10And there's a small strike, it's 3-2. Looks like Clark kept that bat down there, trying to protect Sanchez, but he got it back in time.
- 1:15:17Here's a payoff pitch from Jackson. This is outside ball 4, so Clark walks, and that's the third walk, giving up by Mike Jackson.
- 1:15:30The right walk, 3-1, and the 1-2 fairs, they were, so the Yankees have drawn 6 walks from Kansas City pitching.
- 1:15:40Here's Roy White. Orr sparked down at first with 2 outs. Yankees ahead 2-1, bottom of the fourth.
- 1:15:50First pitch to White is too low. Roy has single and walk, so he's got a perfect day going, a perfect night. He's 1-1.
- 1:16:00Jackson comes to the belt, looks at Clark at first, goes there, hops back easily.
- 1:16:08Mattie Allou is on deck. Yankees trying to put some insurance together here. They lead 2-1, but they need more runs.
- 1:16:161-0 pitch. Swung right on the ground hole. Paul Shaw at third base and bubbles it, and they cannot make a play.
- 1:16:24Shaw, ball right at him, went through him for an error. Clark in his second base, White at first, here's Mattie Allou.
- 1:16:372 outs, Allou has been up twice, walked both times.
- 1:16:43At third base is a huge sparkdown. I just figured that.
- 1:16:48Here's a pitch to Mattie. Looped up in the air to the first baseman. Mayberry's under it, he's got it.
- 1:16:53Check's swinging off the bat of Allou, and he popped the ball up to John Mayberry, the first baseman.
- 1:17:00Over the Yankees, in the fourth, no runs, no hits. There was one error, and two men were left on base.
- 1:17:08At the end of four, the New York Yankees, two, the Kansas City Royals, one.
- 1:17:16What do you think a disaster sounds like? If you live in a city, maybe it's the sound of sirens racing to a fire.
- 1:17:26But you don't have to live in a city to know the terrible sound of a fire.
- 1:17:30You don't have to live in a country to know the sound of a tornado.
- 1:17:34Floods can spike anywhere, too, and sometimes with very little warning.
- 1:17:39At Red Cross, all of these sounds and many more mean disaster.
- 1:17:44The sound of disaster is people. People homeless.
- 1:17:49All our clothing, furniture, everything's gone. We're just thankful we got our kids out of there safe.
- 1:17:55People who must start building their lives all over again.
- 1:17:59I wish I had a thing ahead. I've been working for many years.
- 1:18:02At Red Cross, we think people are the most important sound.
- 1:18:07We're there to help when families need help most.
- 1:18:11Because Americans care about their neighbors, Red Cross is there to help.
- 1:18:18Welcome to scoreboard. The California Angels lead the Detroit Tigers 4-0 after 3. Oakland won the walk of nothing after 1.
- 1:18:27Texas 3, Boston nothing after 3 1 half innings of play.
- 1:18:31In the nice league, Houston 1, Philadelphia nothing after 5 1 half.
- 1:18:36Montchal in the Atlanta Tide up 2-2.
- 1:18:38Right here, the Yankees ahead 2-1, and here to take you through the 5th is Frank Messick.
- 1:18:42Okay Bill, Fran Healy leads off and he bumps the first pitch. Klein stabs it, throws the first, he's got in.
- 1:18:49Steve Klein go towards the third base tie to the pitcher's mound.
- 1:18:54Stabbed that far and threw Healy out in a fine play by the Yankee pitcher, Klein.
- 1:18:59One away. At the top of the order, Freddie Potec.
- 1:19:04Bobby Floyd is out on deck.
- 1:19:12Potec at 5-4 on 140 pounds.
- 1:19:17Takes a breaking ball on outside, ball on.
- 1:19:20Anvil White, to my knowledge, still the smallest man in the major leagues.
- 1:19:24Might be the smallest man in all of baseball.
- 1:19:26And he can do a lot of things.
- 1:19:281-0 pitch time, right hand batter.
- 1:19:31Begging for a strike right across. Potec is hitting 262.
- 1:19:37He is grounded out, walked, and scored.
- 1:19:40The Royals only won. A run. The Yankees leading 2-1.
- 1:19:44Let's pitch it off the end of the mound on the ground a second.
- 1:19:47Potec digs it out, throws on the first base.
- 1:19:49Potec is out, 2-down.
- 1:19:52You know Frank, looking at that little fellow Potec, you mentioned he might be the smallest man in the majors.
- 1:19:57How big was that midget that Bill Vecque used back when he was at San Luis Brown?
- 1:20:02Do you remember?
- 1:20:03No, 3 feet something, wasn't he?
- 1:20:07Oh, that golf was small.
- 1:20:08I remember that guy who created a lot of publicity back in those days.
- 1:20:14Oh, he was 3 feet 7 inches.
- 1:20:17First pitch to Bobby Floyd. Hit him, he had a shallow left.
- 1:20:20White coming on for it, and he makes the catch.
- 1:20:24Another easy inning for Steve Klein as Roy White retires Floyd.
- 1:20:29The Royals go down 1-2-3, nothing across.
- 1:20:32At the end of the top half of the fifth inning, the score, Yankees 2 and Kansas City 1.
- 1:20:39Here's a way to cope with the current fuel shortage and beat the rising cost of gasoline,
- 1:20:43and still enjoy all the comforts and safety of a quality-built automobile.
- 1:20:47Switch to Saab, the Swedish-built car with rack and pinion steering, front-wheel drive, four-wheel disc brakes.
- 1:20:53All the quality and safety features you want in your personal car.
- 1:20:56According to Fred Carl, you'll get 24 to 27 miles a gallon, depending on how you drive.
- 1:21:01How's that compare with your present gas mileage?
- 1:21:03Fred Carl's New Salem Garage has a full line of 73 Saabs in stock for immediate delivery,
- 1:21:08and he'll allow your top dollar for your present car in trade.

- 1:21:34Test drive a Saab at Fred Carl's New Salem Garage, Route 85, just a few miles southwest of Albany, New Salem, New York.
- 1:21:43The fellow that Bill Beck used at St. Louis, I think his name was Eddie Goodell.
- 1:21:48And Bill Kane just called Bob Fischl, the Yankee Public Relations Department, the head of it.
- 1:21:54And Bob signed that fellow, and as I mentioned, he was three feet seven inches.
- 1:21:59Can you imagine somebody trying to cross-strike a guy three feet?
- 1:22:03I just have to roll the ball up their underhands.
- 1:22:06He did. He walked it.
- 1:22:08But he didn't get a second chance. I think it was a Ford-Frix engine race there, and he couldn't play anymore.
- 1:22:12All right, Bobby Mercer is a little bit more than three foot seven.
- 1:22:18Going to lead off in the Yankees. Bobby's more like five-ten.
- 1:22:21And the first pitch to him from the left-hander, Jackson Lohan outside. It's ball one.
- 1:22:25Mercer has flied deep to left and grounded out unassisted to the first baseman, Mayberry.
- 1:22:30Bobby wants times. He goes back to the on-deck circle and gets the far towel from Greg Nettles.
- 1:22:38Yankees leading two to one. Both clubs have three hits.
- 1:22:43Royals have committed two hours. The Yankees won.
- 1:22:47Mercer, Nettles, and Bloomberg, all left-hand hitters here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:52Now right-hander Ken Wright started for Kansas City.
- 1:22:56He did not survive the second inning.
- 1:22:59Gave up two runs, all three hits. He walked three and struck out one.
- 1:23:04Mike Jackson's coming on as walk-free man, but allowed no hits.
- 1:23:08This pitch is hit deep and foul.
- 1:23:10Get to the upper deck in right field with a foul ball.
- 1:23:25Mercer steps away for a moment or two. Now back in.
- 1:23:29The wide, the pitch coming. Wide drive in the right field. It is foul, just foul into the lower deck.
- 1:23:41Frank, I just see an old buddy of yours down behind the Kansas City deck out.
- 1:23:46It's Joe Garagiola, who's here filming some shots on the new Kansas City manager, Jack McKeon,
- 1:23:52for future use on his Monday night baseball game of the week.
- 1:23:55Right, okay. Pitch is low and away from Bobby. They got cameras all over the place.
- 1:24:00Down by the Kansas City dugout, over by the Yankee dugout up here in the broadcast area.
- 1:24:072-2 pitch. Mercer swings and misses, and Jackson picks up his first strikeout.
- 1:24:14Mercer out on strikes, and the batter will be Greg Nettles.
- 1:24:20Joe does the pregame shows for those Monday night broadcasts, right?
- 1:24:34Greg Nettles has grounded out twice. Swings on the first pitch, pops it up.
- 1:24:39In foul territory comes Mayberry, near the thief. He leans in, and now has to lean back and makes the catch.
- 1:24:45He was leaning in, and then the ball drifted back toward the playing area.
- 1:24:50He reached back for it, and there were two down.
- 1:24:53That'll drop Nettles batting average. He stayed below 200.
- 1:24:59And Felipe Alou now comes out to bat for Ronnie Bloomberg.
- 1:25:04Felipe Alou will bat for Bloomberg, and the winner of the ball game is first base.
- 1:25:09Felipe, right hand hitter of course.
- 1:25:18And the left-hander, Jackson deals a strike.
- 1:25:22Felipe Alou is hitting 2-29.
- 1:25:31He's had two home runs and seven runs done at it.
- 1:25:34This one is blowing away from him, a ball, one-on-one.
- 1:25:37Yankees out in front, 2-1. Nobody out, and 2-9 out here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:25:43Next.
- 1:25:48In a year when you have to clear your throat to cheer, here's something to hear.

- 1:27:29Well after really first two innings, both pitchers got into a little bit of trouble.
- 1:27:36In fact, Klein hadn't been on the first three innings, they've settled down.
- 1:27:40Of course, Kenny Wright has been knocked out by the Yankees.
- 1:27:43He went one and two-thirds, but Mike Jackson's come in and he's settled down.
- 1:27:46And Steve Klein, after giving up the one run on two hits and an error back in the third, has settled down.
- 1:27:54He's gotten out, let's see, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight men in a row.
- 1:27:59My bill, the first man to face him will be Amos Otis here in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:28:05Otis, the right-hand batter.
- 1:28:08He's rounded to third and lined out to third.
- 1:28:12He had a real bullet that was stabbed by Nettles in the third inning, and that was a big play for Steve Klein.
- 1:28:22Game with runners at first and third and nobody out.
- 1:28:28Well, Steve into the windup, and the first pitch down to Otis, breaking ball down low, ball one.
- 1:28:36The line drive hit by Otis that Nettles caught was followed by a base hit by Mayberry,
- 1:28:40and then Kirkpatrick rounded into a double play.
- 1:28:42So Klein could have had a real rough inning and it not been for some good play in the field behind him.
- 1:28:49He winds and delivers one and all.
- 1:28:52Fast ball, low and inside, two balls and no strikes.
- 1:28:56But they play a little now at first base for the Yankees, having batted for Bloomberg, stayed in the ballgame.
- 1:29:03Clark at second, Michael at short, Nettles at third.
- 1:29:07And they play Otis around to the left side on the infield, straight away in the outfield.
- 1:29:19Klein looks in to windup, and here comes the pitch.
- 1:29:23Get in the air to shuttle left.
- 1:29:25Back goes Michael, in comes White.
- 1:29:27It's Michael who is under it.
- 1:29:28The shortstop makes the catch, and Otis is retired, one down.
- 1:29:35Now John Mayberry, the first baseman, strong left-hand hitter.
- 1:29:39Mayberry has walked and singled and driven in the one run for Kansas City.
- 1:29:53Mayberry digs around in the batter's box, steps out.
- 1:29:56First time he came up tonight, he was in and out over to the on-deck circle.
- 1:30:01Now he's in there, bounces back and forth.
- 1:30:04Toes of his right foot, and to the toes of his left foot.
- 1:30:08Here's the pitch to him.
- 1:30:09Changeup is high on outside, ball one.
- 1:30:15When the Yankees come back from their next road trip, their first game will be against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
- 1:30:22Thursday, May 10th at 8.05, the annual Mayors' Trophy game.
- 1:30:271-0 to Debrey.
- 1:30:28Get in the air to center field.
- 1:30:30Mercer started back, now comes in.
- 1:30:32Gets under it and Mercer makes the catch.
- 1:30:35Retire Mayberry.
- 1:30:37Two down.
- 1:30:40Ed Kirkpatrick the batter.
- 1:30:43Kirkpatrick is grounded out to Clark at second and grounded into a double play, started by Gene Michael at short.
- 1:30:50Michael fielded the ball, going toward second base, took the play there himself, threw on to first base.
- 1:30:55And that was a mighty big play right there for Steve Fly.
- 1:30:58Got him out at the third inning with only one run scoring.
- 1:31:03Two outs, the bases empty.
- 1:31:06Fine.
- 1:31:07Kicks and fires.
- 1:31:08And this is low and away, ball one.
- 1:31:13Tickets for the Mayors' Trophy game to be played at Shea Stadium Thursday, May 10th, are available at all Yankee and New York Mets.
- 1:31:21Check it out, that's 1-0 pitch coming.
- 1:31:24Fastball is in, strike called.
- 1:31:27Kirkpatrick can do a lot of things.
- 1:31:29He's playing right field tonight.
- 1:31:30He can also play first base.
- 1:31:31I've seen him play third.
- 1:31:33He can catch.
- 1:31:37And he can hit.
- 1:31:38And he can hit right field.
- 1:31:40360 right now.
- 1:31:42Swings at a breaking pitch, ground ball right side, past Clark in the right field.
- 1:31:47Clark runs the ball down himself.
- 1:31:50Clark going to his left, could not come up with it.
- 1:31:53So Kirkpatrick is on with a ground single in the right.
- 1:31:58That will be base at number four for Kansas City, and it brings up Lou Penella.
- 1:32:10Five retired, nine men in a row.
- 1:32:20Penella right hand batter is grounded to third and grounded to short.
- 1:32:23He's hitting 282 at the moment.
- 1:32:27Yeah, he's going to wander around to play a little while.
- 1:32:33He wears those pants pulled down as far as they'll go, doesn't he, Bill?
- 1:32:36Doesn't have them tucked up under at all.
- 1:32:41First pitch, get on the ground left side, dug up by Nettles, thrown on to Clark in time.
- 1:32:47The fourth, Kirkpatrick, and that's all for the Royals in the sixth inning.
- 1:32:52No runs, a base, and a man left.
- 1:32:54And at the end of the top half of the sixth inning, the Yankees two and Kansas City one.
- 1:33:00The reason I'm writing you, because when I was in fifth grade, I had an ecology chapter in social studies, and I loved it.
- 1:33:07And I wish you could tell us what to do about it.
- 1:33:10For one month, my girlfriend and I got up early in the morning and picked up papers and other things from the grounds.
- 1:33:16Now we wish we could do more.
- 1:33:18Gentlemen, I'm a lawyer.
- 1:33:20Possibly I could be of some help to veterans.
- 1:33:23In any event, if you can suggest areas where I could help, I will do my best.
- 1:33:29A P.S. My wife will help, too.
- 1:33:32If you don't know what to volunteer for, call a volunteer service in your town, or write to Volunteer Washington, D.C. 20013.
- 1:33:41We can tell you who needs your help, and what we need, money can't buy.
- 1:33:46We need you.
- 1:33:48This public service message brought to you on behalf of the National Center for Voluntary Action and the Advertising Council.
- 1:34:02Two games that will be played here tomorrow night.
- 1:34:04It will be George Mettich on the mound with the Yankees against Left-Hander Falls-Plettoff with the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:34:10The Yankees have an off day, and they go on a six-game road trip, three games in Chicago and three in Minnesota,
- 1:34:17before returning back to New York to meet the New York Mets in the annual Mayors' Trophy game.
- 1:34:23The game will be played on Thursday, May 10th, a night game, 8.05 at Shea Stadium.
- 1:34:28And after that ball game, the run for the American League East title starts again,
- 1:34:34with Baltimore coming in for a big four-game series over the weekend of May 11th,
- 1:34:40a Friday night game through a doubleheader on Sunday, May 13th.
- 1:34:45That's going to be a pretty important series, Frank, isn't it?
- 1:34:48It certainly is. One to mark down.
- 1:34:50Thurman Munson, the leadoff here for the Yankees in the bottom half of the sixth.
- 1:34:53He swings and he misses out in front of a breaking pitch, strike one.
- 1:34:57Munson is 0 for 2, and he's seen his batting average dip to 3.71.
- 1:35:02Next pitch, down low, bounces off the foot of Fran Healy, the catcher.
- 1:35:07Rolls down the third baseline.
- 1:35:09Dick Hauser wants to be sure that plate umpire Bill Haller checks that ball for shoe polish.
- 1:35:14And sure enough, it comes out of the game.
- 1:35:18One ball and one strike.
- 1:35:21Munson is bounced back to the pitcher and grounded out the third.
- 1:35:26The Yankees have not had a base hit off Mike Jackson.
- 1:35:29Jackson has walked three men, another reached on an error.
- 1:35:32There's ball two inside of Munson.
- 1:35:35Southerino Sanchez, the designated hitter, is on deck.
- 1:35:39And then she, Michael, lower third of the batting order here in the sixth inning.
- 1:35:47Jackson deals and Munson fouls one back upstairs.
- 1:35:51Count evens two balls, two strikes.
- 1:35:54They play Munson up the middle, deep and left.
- 1:36:02Kirk Patrick, straight away on right field.
- 1:36:05The outfield does not play Munson to full.
- 1:36:08He pops this one up on the right side.
- 1:36:10Coming after it is Healy, the catcher, the first baseman Mayberry,
- 1:36:13and they let the ball drop the play to him in foul territory.
- 1:36:19And Alphonse and Gaston, and no play.
- 1:36:23So it will not be an error.
- 1:36:32Ball hit over in front of the Yankee dugout.
- 1:36:35With both Healy and Mayberry going after it, all of a sudden they both stop,
- 1:36:39look at each other, and the ball hit directly between them.
- 1:36:44Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:45Munson stays alive.
- 1:36:49Foul back.
- 1:36:58Yankees leading two to one.
- 1:37:02Rounds have been driven in by Gene Michael and Horace Clark,
- 1:37:05both crossing in the second inning.
- 1:37:08Munson swings on this one, fouls it back.
- 1:37:13Got just a little piece of it.
- 1:37:16Down holes two and two.
- 1:37:19These same two clubs meet out here again tomorrow night at 7.30.
- 1:37:25Doc Medich pitching for New York.
- 1:37:27South ball, Paul Splittorf for the KC Royals.
- 1:37:33Jackson taking a little too much time.
- 1:37:35The suit Munson, Berman steps out.
- 1:37:38Now back in and here we go.
- 1:37:40Two-two pitch coming.
- 1:37:42It's a swing, it's just outside, ball free.
- 1:37:49Frank Thurman changes hands a little bit there.
- 1:37:51He's way back off the plate and he's hitting the inside face,
- 1:37:54sharply to the left, and the outside face, he's going the right field.
- 1:37:57And Jackson is trying to get a needle on the outside part.
- 1:38:01He misses outside, ball four, and Munson is off.
- 1:38:06That is the fourth walk given up by Jackson, the seventh by Kansas City pitching.
- 1:38:10This is the New York Yankee Baseball Network.
- 1:38:13We pause for station identification.
- 1:38:16Hi, I'm John Watson extending an invitation for all of you sports fans
- 1:38:19to join me weekdays and Saturday nights in John's World.
- 1:38:23We not only have music, but also weekdays we have the UPI financial reports
- 1:38:28at 15 before the hour on WQBK FM Rinsler.
- 1:38:43When the left-hand pitcher Jackson was brought in in relief of right-hander Ken Wright,
- 1:38:47Ralph Houch switched to Sanchez and Sutterino walked in the fourth inning.
- 1:38:52Munson at first being held on by Mayberry,
- 1:38:54and Sanchez it's a long drive to left center, but it's all can of corn.
- 1:38:59Out there for the center fielder Otis, Munson tags up but does not go
- 1:39:03as Otis gets a good throw in.
- 1:39:06Both Otis and Panano were there, and they're discussing that play.
- 1:39:11They almost collide, and I thought they both knew what they were doing,
- 1:39:14but there's a little discussion between the two of them now.
- 1:39:18Otis is the one who made the catch, and Munson after tagging up,
- 1:39:22left going to second, made Otis throw and then went back to first.
- 1:39:26One out and here is Gene Michael.
- 1:39:33Pitch out. Munson was not going, it's ball one.
- 1:39:41Michael taking a long look down at third base coach Dick Houser.
- 1:39:51He swings and misses one and one, full cut.
- 1:39:55Elston Howard was talking to the first base umpire, Joe Brinkman.
- 1:40:03My guess would be asking him to watch Brinkman.
- 1:40:06Well, he may think that Brinkman balks in his motion to first base.
- 1:40:09He looks over there, the left-hander deals.
- 1:40:11Michael takes low and outside, two balls and one strike.
- 1:40:17On each pitch, Mutek breaks just a bit toward the bag at second.
- 1:40:22They think that Munson will be going.
- 1:40:30And he made.
- 1:40:31He goes and they got him picked off.
- 1:40:33He stops halfway, Mayberry running him toward second, and Mayberry tags him out.
- 1:40:39Munson was picked off.
- 1:40:44One-three, Mayberry never did throw the ball again as Munson stopped halfway.
- 1:40:50Mayberry chased him and finally tagged him.
- 1:40:55Left arm off, Mayberry's a little upset.
- 1:40:57Thuram came back and almost ran through Mayberry.
- 1:41:01Michael takes a pitch up high.
- 1:41:04One-three, three and one.
- 1:41:15Next offering, he's taking a strike call.
- 1:41:18Three and two.
- 1:41:26Two outs, nobody on.
- 1:41:28And the three-two pitch to Michael.
- 1:41:30Michael Jackson fouls it back upstairs on the first-base side in the upper deck.
- 1:41:38I gather from the crowd reaction that a pretty good play was made up there.
- 1:41:46Three-two pitch again, swing and a miss struck him out.
- 1:41:52Mike Jackson picks up his second strikeout and for the Yankees in the sixth inning, no runs, no hits.
- 1:41:57There were no errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:42:00So at the end of six full innings, the score, New York two and Kansas City one.
- 1:42:05If you're fed up with the high cost of automobile financing, you're not alone.

- 1:43:04Boston Spa National Bank, member FDIC.
- 1:43:08In National League games, Houston 3, Philadelphia nothing at the end of seven,
- 1:43:14Montreal 4, Atlanta 2 at the end of four and a half,
- 1:43:17Henry Aaron has hit his sixth home run.
- 1:43:19The rest of the games later starts and no report.
- 1:43:22Right now we go to the seventh and ready with the action, here's Bill White.
- 1:43:25All right Franklin, Hal McCray heading against Steve Klein. Yankees ahead by a score of 2 to 1.
- 1:43:30First pitch, line drive, base hit right field, Matty Alou and quickly he'll get the ball back in the infield.
- 1:43:36And Hal McCray's on two for three.
- 1:43:40So McCray leads off to seventh for the Royals by lining a single with sharply to right field.
- 1:43:47He's there, here's Paul Schall.
- 1:43:50Schall on the third baseman is over two, he's popped a second and bounced a third.
- 1:43:54Looking down at Harry Dunlop for a sign, Schall bats right handed.
- 1:44:02Schall batting at 2, 6, 3.
- 1:44:08Yankees with the infield back looking for 2.
- 1:44:11Steve Klein hides the ball on his right hip, now he comes set.
- 1:44:14Chex McCray, the pitch to Schall. He swears a bunch but takes inside the ball.
- 1:44:22Now Schall back out once again looking down at Harry Dunlop who just picked up the sign from his skipper,
- 1:44:28Jack McKeon relays it back to Schall.
- 1:44:31Time's call, now Greg Nettles wants to talk to Steve Klein.
- 1:44:36Gleap that little old McCray at first, he'll release and charge quickly.
- 1:44:43Nettles bows in on the grass now, maybe a step or two off the grass.
- 1:44:49One ball, no strike count on Schall.
- 1:44:51Yankees ahead 2 to 1, you're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:44:55Royals have a man at first.
- 1:44:57The one-hole pitch, all strike.
- 1:45:00Schall took that, he started to swing but took it on the outside corner, it's 1 and 1.
- 1:45:07Now the guessing game starts.
- 1:45:09Schall back out again looking at his third-phase coach.
- 1:45:13McCray also looking over there.
- 1:45:15McCray leads off first. He doesn't have a big lead there.
- 1:45:19Klein checks it.
- 1:45:21The 1-1 pitch.
- 1:45:23Inside, ball 2, it's 2 balls and a strike.
- 1:45:29On deck is Fran Healy.
- 1:45:32The Yankees picked up both their runs in the second inning.
- 1:45:38The Kansas City Royals came back and picked up their one run in the top of the third.
- 1:45:42Well, the Yankees are ahead 2 to 1, Royals threatening.
- 1:45:46Stretch and the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:45:49Line drive, base hit right field.
- 1:45:51Malou in quickly and McCray will have to hold his second as Matty Lowe makes a strong throw there to second base.
- 1:45:57Almost hit McCray in the head.
- 1:46:00So the Royals, with back-to-back singles from Hal McCray and Paul Schall, have runners now at first and second.
- 1:46:10Still no outs and here's Fran Healy, the catcher.
- 1:46:14Now Nettles and Klein and Munchen meeting on the mound.
- 1:46:17Nettles leads, Munchen's got there talking to Steve.
- 1:46:22The Yankees evidently expecting a punt here.
- 1:46:25They lead 2 to 1 over the Royals.
- 1:46:28Kansas City threatening.
- 1:46:30Runners at first and second and no outs.
- 1:46:33Nettles in close at third, so is Felipe Malou at first.
- 1:46:38Upfield straight away for Healy, who's 0 for 2 in the ball game.
- 1:46:41He's bounced to third and bounced back to the pitcher.
- 1:46:44That's right-handed.
- 1:46:45Here's a pitch to him.
- 1:46:46He squares and butts down up to Steve Klein.
- 1:46:48Klein's up.
- 1:46:49He'll go to first base and he gets the foot out there.
- 1:46:53The runners advance.
- 1:46:55Hal McCray goes to third.
- 1:46:59Paul Schall to second.
- 1:47:01Give Healy a sacrifice.
- 1:47:03He was thrown out 1 to 4 as Klein threw to Horace Clark covering first base.
- 1:47:09So there's one away.
- 1:47:10Ralph Hauk out to the mound as the Yankees decide what they're going to do with Freddie Potech.
- 1:47:18Nettles, Munchen, Hauk and Klein out discussing Potech.
- 1:47:22Potech is 0 for 2 in the ball game.
- 1:47:24He has scored a run though.
- 1:47:26He scored the Royals' only run.
- 1:47:28In the first inning, he bounced to third, walked and scored in the third, and bounced to second and the fifth.
- 1:47:35Oh, the Yankees now have a big conference going out on the mound.
- 1:47:42And it looks like we're going to get a new pitcher.
- 1:47:46That's going to be all for Steve Klein.
- 1:47:48You remember, Klein hurt a muscle, strained a muscle in the ball game up in Milwaukee.
- 1:47:56And it's cool here tonight.
- 1:47:58So Ralph Hauk evidently feels that Steve Klein has gone far enough.
- 1:48:03And it's Markie Lyle.
- 1:48:07Lyle in here replacing Klein.
- 1:48:11So Steve goes sixth in one third innings.
- 1:48:16He's given up just one run so far.
- 1:48:19Of course, the runners at second and third are his responsibility.
- 1:48:24Klein's given up also six hits.
- 1:48:35He's walked three.
- 1:48:39And he has not struck out a batter.
- 1:48:45So it's Markie Lyle, isn't there, now relieving Steve Klein.
- 1:49:00Lyle is making his fifth appearance for the Yankees so far this year.
- 1:49:06He made a decision in Boston when he gave up a ninth inning home run to Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:49:16And he lost one in Milwaukee.
- 1:49:19Gave up a three-run home run by Johnny Vukovich in the seventh.
- 1:49:24That's when he came in to relieve Steve Klein.
- 1:49:27He lost that ball game.
- 1:49:31So Markie Lyle is in.
- 1:49:34Now this year, Spouse, Markie's given up three home runs,
- 1:49:37and he only allowed three home runs all of last year.
- 1:49:40So Ralph Howe getting a chance to look at Sparky Lyle as Markie makes his fifth appearance on the mound this year.
- 1:49:46Last year, Sparky made 59 appearances, setting the American League record with 35 saves.
- 1:49:54He'd like to get that hard slide of working here on Freddie Potec.
- 1:49:59The Yankees were sailing along with a 2-1 lead going into this inning, a 7,
- 1:50:05when Hal McCray singled sharply to right field.
- 1:50:08That was followed by another sharp single to right by Paul Shaw.
- 1:50:12McCray held at second.
- 1:50:14Then Fran Ealy, but it sacrificed successfully, back to Klein.
- 1:50:18Both runners advancing.
- 1:50:20So there's one out, runners at second and third, and here's Freddie Potec and against Sparky Lyle.
- 1:50:26Let's see how the Yankees play this.
- 1:50:27First of all, they're going to pitch to Potec.
- 1:50:29They're going to make him fling the bat.
- 1:50:31Netto's enclosed at third, so is Felipe Alou at first.
- 1:50:35Michael and Clark are at their normal position.
- 1:50:39Sparky Lyle's over the head, and here's the first pitch.
- 1:50:42High, a ball.
- 1:50:45McCray at third.
- 1:50:47Shaw down at second with one out here at the top of the seventh.
- 1:50:51The Yankees are ahead 2-1.
- 1:50:54Now Potec looks down at third.
- 1:50:56John Lopp gives him the sign.
- 1:51:00Lyle with that big char to back in his left-cheek nods agreement pumps and deals a 1-0 pitch.
- 1:51:05All strike at 1-1.
- 1:51:10On deck is Bobby Floyd.
- 1:51:12Now Lyle back off the backside of the mound.
- 1:51:15Goes to his mouth, goes to the rosin bag, to the cap.
- 1:51:19Now he's back on.
- 1:51:23Lyle's lead, McCray from third, Shaw from second.
- 1:51:27Lyle looks over to McCray.
- 1:51:30Looks back in, doesn't like the sign, wants a new one.
- 1:51:33Gets it, likes it.
- 1:51:35Now time's call, Potec backs up.
- 1:51:39Bill Aller, the home plate on fire, calls time.
- 1:51:44War of nerves going on between Lyle the pitcher and Potec the hitter.
- 1:51:49Now we're ready. Here's the 1-1 pitch coming down to Potec.
- 1:51:53Inside a ball, two balls and a strike.
- 1:51:56Lyle wanted that pitch.
- 1:51:59Back out, Bucky Lyle.
- 1:52:02Trying to pick up his first save of the year.
- 1:52:05He picked up 35 last year, his set a new American League record.
- 1:52:09And this is a tough situation.
- 1:52:12Yankees ahead 2-1, 1-0.
- 1:52:15McCray from third.
- 1:52:17Yankees from second. Lyle likes the sign.
- 1:52:20He winds. It's a 2-1 pitch to Potec.
- 1:52:22Swung on top foul outside of third, and it's 2-2.
- 1:52:30Sparky Lyle trying to regain the form he had last year
- 1:52:35when he was the number one pitcher in the American League,
- 1:52:38possibly the number one pitcher, relief pitcher in all of baseball.
- 1:52:43Cincinnati had a pretty good year.
- 1:52:47Play Carroll.
- 1:52:52Carroll had 36 saves last year.
- 1:52:55Here's a 2-2 pitch, not a Potec.
- 1:52:58Swung on, bounce to third, Nettles has it, looks to run her back to third,
- 1:53:01throw her first, they've got him.
- 1:53:03Two out.
- 1:53:06Lyle inside Potec, they hit a sharp ground ball to Nettles,
- 1:53:10who looks McCray back to third, took his time, threw Potec out at first,
- 1:53:14so they're two out, and we're going to get a pitch hitter for Bobby Floyd.
- 1:53:31Kurt Savakwa, the Royals' acquire from the Cleveland Indians,
- 1:53:37will bat for Bobby Floyd.
- 1:53:47So Lyle now has done a job.
- 1:53:50He's got his man out, and he did not allow the runners to score.
- 1:53:54He's got two outs, and Savakwa now will bat for Floyd.
- 1:53:58Savakwa bats right-handed.
- 1:54:00Kuki Rojas started the game at second base for the Royals,
- 1:54:03and he would normally be in this position.
- 1:54:07Rojas was spiked as he went into second base trying to break up a double play,
- 1:54:11or his clerk came down on him.
- 1:54:13And Rojas is one of the RBI leaders on this ball club with 14.
- 1:54:18Bobby Floyd went into play second base, and he's single and fly it out.
- 1:54:22Now it's Savakwa in-pitch hitting for Floyd.
- 1:54:25Runners at second and third, two outs, Lyle's ready, and the pitch.
- 1:54:29A breaking ball, the jump side corner to called strike.
- 1:54:35Yankees ahead 2-1, you're in the top of the seventh, two outs.
- 1:54:40McCray leads from third, Shaw from second.
- 1:54:43Lyle checks McCray.
- 1:54:45Wines and deals.
- 1:54:46Pull on and missed the breaking ball, no balls and two strikes.
- 1:54:53Marky Lau going to the overhand curve ball,
- 1:54:55found the outside corner with the first one, got the next one down and in.
- 1:55:00And Savakwa swung over it.
- 1:55:02So Lyle ahead, now no balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 1:55:09The Royals threatening with runners at second and third.
- 1:55:13Lyle looks under Munchen, he's got the sign.
- 1:55:16Likes it, nods agreement, checks McCray, he winds.
- 1:55:20Here's the 0-2 pitch.
- 1:55:22Swung on and called off.
- 1:55:25It's no balls and two strikes yet.
- 1:55:32Lyle on the back part of the mound, gets a rosin.
- 1:55:37Marky came in this inning with runners at second and third, one out.
- 1:55:42He got Patek to bounce to third.
- 1:55:44Nettles held McCray at third, threw Patek out for the second out.
- 1:55:48Now to count, no balls and two strikes on Savakwa, batting for Floyd.
- 1:55:51Here's the one, the 0-2 pitch.
- 1:55:53Swung on, hit on the ground and short.
- 1:55:55Charged by Michael, he's got it, throws to first and they've got him there for the third out.
- 1:56:00Marky Lyle has come into the ball game and he's done a job.
- 1:56:05Oh, that's it for the Royals.
- 1:56:07No runs on two hits and he leaves him on base.
- 1:56:10In the middle of the seventh, the Yankees 2, the Kansas City Royals 1.
- 1:56:17We at Getty have been telling you that you can save money on our premium gasoline

- 1:56:54And if you use Getty for a year or around 12,000 miles of driving, you can save around $30.
- 1:57:01$30 for doing nothing more than filling up with Getty.
- 1:57:05That's enough to buy another 75 gallons, which is enough gas to take you about 1,000 miles.
- 1:57:12At Getty, we give you more gas for your money.
- 1:57:15So you get more miles for your money.
- 1:57:22Well, Kurt Babacka, who batted for Bobby Floyd, stays in the ballgame to play second base.
- 1:57:31So you can mark that defensive change down.
- 1:57:34And we go to the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:57:36Yankees leading 2-1.
- 1:57:38And the top of the order, here's Bill.
- 1:57:41All right, Frank, the first pitch in to Horace Clark.
- 1:57:43The breaking ball is a called strike.
- 1:57:45Mike Jackson on the mound for the Royals.
- 1:57:48Getting a right start.
- 1:57:49He only lasted an inning and a third.
- 1:57:51Clark lines the next pitch to left field.
- 1:57:52It's going to be a curveball.
- 1:57:54It bounces into the deep, profound rule of double.
- 1:57:57Horace Clark in an 0-1 curveball and winds it down to left field line.
- 1:58:02Just hit inside the line and bounces into the sand.
- 1:58:05So Clark leads the Yankees 7-0-5 doubling.
- 1:58:09And here's Roy White.
- 1:58:11Bill, that's a first hit.
- 1:58:13The Yankees have had off the left-hander Mike Jackson and their fourth in the ballgame.
- 1:58:19Let's see now.
- 1:58:20Why didn't they're batting right-handed?
- 1:58:23Roy was expecting a punt.
- 1:58:25Here's a stretch.
- 1:58:26And the pitch.
- 1:58:27Too low a ball.
- 1:58:28White did not offer to punt.
- 1:58:29Call.
- 1:58:30The third baseman's in close.
- 1:58:31And Mayberry, the first baseman, heads in.
- 1:58:33Now he moves back a couple of steps.
- 1:58:35Yankees 2-0.
- 1:58:36Royals 1.
- 1:58:37He's in the bottom of the 7th.
- 1:58:39No outs.
- 1:58:40Clark leading from second.
- 1:58:42The 1-0 pitch to White.
- 1:58:44Takes a punt, takes it back.
- 1:58:45Back it's too low.
- 1:58:46Ball 2.
- 1:58:49White's been up three times, officially twice, because he's single to right field.
- 1:58:53He's walked.
- 1:58:54And he got on on an error.
- 1:58:57So he is 1 for 2.
- 1:59:002-0 pitch to White.
- 1:59:01Swung on and fouled off.
- 1:59:042-1.
- 1:59:07On deck is Matty Lou.
- 1:59:08Yankees ahead by a score of 2-1 here in the bottom of the 7th.
- 1:59:12Or as Clark led, the inning off by doubling into the left field corner.
- 1:59:172-1 pitch.
- 1:59:18Outside ball.
- 1:59:193-1.
- 1:59:20Now time for any one to talk to Jackson.
- 1:59:27Yankees picked up their two runs back in the second inning.
- 1:59:31Ron Bloomberg walked.
- 1:59:33After Munson bounced out and Kikallisen fouled out.
- 1:59:38Gene Michael, single in a run.
- 1:59:41And then Oras Clark, single in the Yankees' second run.
- 1:59:45Royals picked up their run in the top of the third.
- 1:59:47Here's the stretch foul.
- 1:59:483-1 pitch to White.
- 1:59:49Breaking ball to call strike 2.
- 1:59:51Full count.
- 1:59:56They play White straight away with Otis at center field or a step or two over toward right center.
- 2:00:02Roy batting at 1-8-4.
- 2:00:05Jackson checks far and gets second.
- 2:00:07Payoff pitch.
- 2:00:08Pulling off the middle off Jackson's leg.
- 2:00:10Over toward third.
- 2:00:11And Roy White will get a base hit.
- 2:00:14Oras Clark could not move to second base, but White's on same foot first.
- 2:00:18Give him an infield hit.
- 2:00:22White smashed that ball up the middle and hit Jackson on his leg.
- 2:00:26Bounced over toward Paul Shawl at third.
- 2:00:29Shawl was moving toward third.
- 2:00:30Justin Blase might be going that way.
- 2:00:33He had no chance to recover and make the play.
- 2:00:35So the Yankees now run at first and second here in the seventh.
- 2:00:39No outs.
- 2:00:40And the batter is Matty Alou.
- 2:00:42And Galen Siscoe goes out to the mound.
- 2:00:47And he's joined there by Shawl, the third baseman.
- 2:00:50His catcher, Fran Healy and Mike Jackson.
- 2:00:53Galen Siscoe, the former Mets pitcher, is the pitching coach on this ball club.
- 2:00:58Right, and he's not out there to make a pitching change.
- 2:01:03Just to pass along some information, they're plotting a little strategy.
- 2:01:09As to what to do with Matty Alou.
- 2:01:12What kind of strategy can you devise around a guy like Alou who can hit the ball just about anywhere, Bill?
- 2:01:18There is none.
- 2:01:19Throw him down the middle and he'll be able to hit you straight away.
- 2:01:22Now the play down by Bill Haller goes out there now to break up the conference.
- 2:01:25Siscoe heads back toward the dugout.
- 2:01:30McCann, Jack McCann when he came in, kept three of his coaches, three coaches that were left over.
- 2:01:38Siscoe was the pitching coach.
- 2:01:41Under Bob Levin, Dunlop was the first base coach and Charlie Vowell was the batting instructor.
- 2:01:48And who was third base coach?
- 2:01:49George Strickland, wasn't he?
- 2:01:51Strick is gone.
- 2:01:52They only have three coaches.
- 2:01:53Okay, Bill.
- 2:01:54Here's Matty Alou.
- 2:01:55Throw to second.
- 2:01:56Clark is back.
- 2:01:59Horace Clark is second.
- 2:02:00Roy White is first.
- 2:02:01Noah out there in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:02:04Yankee is trying to get a few insurance runs here.
- 2:02:06They lead two to one.
- 2:02:07Matty batting at 3.27.
- 2:02:10Throw to second again.
- 2:02:11Clark is back.
- 2:02:12This time to the shortstop Patek.
- 2:02:15I think the Royals are trying to set up a play where Patek will really hustle to third and try to beat Clark there in case of a bunt.
- 2:02:22If Matty Alou can really handle a bat, he sees a vacate that spot.
- 2:02:25He'll go there.
- 2:02:26Here's the pitch.
- 2:02:27Hung on and miss.
- 2:02:31Mayberry really charging from first.
- 2:02:34He's moving back behind first looking at Alou.
- 2:02:38And Matty can't pull the ball.
- 2:02:40We saw that the other day when he had a two-run homer here.
- 2:02:44Clark from second.
- 2:02:45White from first.
- 2:02:46No outs.
- 2:02:47Jackson comes to the bell.
- 2:02:49The stretch.
- 2:02:50The pitch to Matty.
- 2:02:51Down low, one and one.
- 2:02:55Matty's 0 for one.
- 2:02:57He's walked twice.
- 2:02:58Pop to the first baseman.
- 2:02:59Mayberry.
- 2:03:01On deck is Bobby Mercer.
- 2:03:06Patek holding Clark close at second.
- 2:03:08The 1-1 pitch.
- 2:03:09Cold strike two.
- 2:03:11One fall and two strikes.
- 2:03:19Jackson looking out in the outfield.
- 2:03:22He was owed a straightaway out there in the center.
- 2:03:24Now, Oda's backed up a couple of steps.
- 2:03:28And the stretch.
- 2:03:29Clark leads from second.
- 2:03:30White from first.
- 2:03:31The 1-1 is down the dirt.
- 2:03:33Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:03:39Matty Alou batting a 3-27.
- 2:03:47Matty has a homerun five runs batted in.
- 2:03:50Here's a 2-2 pitch to Alou.
- 2:03:52Down in the dirt.
- 2:03:53Ball three.
- 2:03:543-2.
- 2:03:56Now, Horace Clark and Roy White look over at Dickhouser for sign.
- 2:04:01Time's call.
- 2:04:02Now, Paul Shaw, the third baseman, wants to talk to his pitcher.
- 2:04:06Will the Yankees be running here on a 3-2 down on Alou?
- 2:04:09Well, they might, Bill, because Alou doesn't strike out that often.
- 2:04:12But we'll see.
- 2:04:13Now, Mayberry, the first baseman, comes in.
- 2:04:17He wants to join that conference at the mound.
- 2:04:19And the umpires won't let him.
- 2:04:20They say one man at a time unless the manager's out there.
- 2:04:22And that one man is Shaw.
- 2:04:24So Shaw goes back.
- 2:04:25And now Mayberry is going to get his two cents worth in with the pitcher, Mike Jackson.
- 2:04:31Matty's been up 49 times.
- 2:04:33He struck out eight times.
- 2:04:34Let's see what they'll do.
- 2:04:38Horace Clark leading down from second.
- 2:04:41Roy White takes the short lead off at first.
- 2:04:47Jackson looking at it.
- 2:04:48Healy has a sign.
- 2:04:49Comes to the bell.
- 2:04:50And he throws the first base.
- 2:04:52But White's back there safely.
- 2:04:57Mayberry snuck in behind White.
- 2:04:59That's a pretty good play.
- 2:05:00It didn't work that time, though.
- 2:05:01Now the stretch.
- 2:05:02Runners lead.
- 2:05:03They're not going.
- 2:05:04Breaking ball is looked for.
- 2:05:06And Roy White not trying to go to third.
- 2:05:11It goes off the bag.
- 2:05:12And he goes to third.
- 2:05:13So the Yankees with Matty Lou lopping the single out of the left field to drive in their
- 2:05:22third run.
- 2:05:23Roy White got hung up between first and second.
- 2:05:25He really faked Penella.
- 2:05:26And when Penella got his arm at the top, White went on in the third.
- 2:05:33And the throw was off the back.
- 2:05:34So White made it there safely.
- 2:05:36Matty Lou at first base with his sixth run batted into the air.
- 2:05:40And the Yankees lead three to one.
- 2:05:42Yankees got a little bit of a break there on Roy White because that Penella's throw
- 2:05:46been good.
- 2:05:47And to the bag, I think they would have had him.
- 2:05:49About 20 feet.
- 2:05:51By just about 20.
- 2:05:53Jack McKeon, the manager, is out there.
- 2:05:55And he is there to make a pitching change.
- 2:05:57So Jackson came up with one, two, three, four, and a third, a hitless inning.
- 2:06:04But here in the seventh, Clark's leadoff double.
- 2:06:07It bounced into the left field seats.
- 2:06:09White's ground ball off Jackson's leg.
- 2:06:12And now Matty Lou's little easy swing single out into left center field.
- 2:06:17That's driven Jackson from the ballgame.
- 2:06:24Let's see who it is coming in.
- 2:06:27Donnie Bergmeyer.
- 2:06:29He's another left-hander.
- 2:06:30Bergmeyer.
- 2:06:32He wastes no time.
- 2:06:33He gets out of the dots and then runs out to the mound.
- 2:06:36He wants that baseball.
- 2:06:37And let's get down to business.
- 2:06:39So he'll be facing Mercer and Nettles.
- 2:06:43And then Felipe Alou with White now at third.
- 2:06:47There was no air on the last play, incidentally, even though White would not have gone to third,
- 2:06:53had the throw been good.
- 2:07:00So the log on Jackson, four and a third innings.
- 2:07:07So far he has allowed one run, but the two base runners are his responsibility.
- 2:07:13Three hits.
- 2:07:14He walked four and he struck out two.
- 2:07:20And right now it's the left-hander Bergmeyer starts his warm-up throws.
- 2:07:23Let's see what he's done so far this year.
- 2:07:26Bergmeyer has been in five ballgames prior to this.
- 2:07:29All in relief.
- 2:07:31He has pitched only eight innings, allowed 10 hits and five runs, walked four and struck out three.
- 2:07:37So from that he would say he has not had eight of the best innings of his career.
- 2:07:42And an earned run average of 5.63.
- 2:07:48That California-Detroit game is now in the bottom half of the sixth inning,
- 2:07:53with California leading by a score of 6-1.
- 2:07:56Cleveland and Minnesota got rained out in Minnesota.
- 2:07:59Baltimore and Chicago are tied 1-1 in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 2:08:03Dick Allen has Homer in that ballgame.
- 2:08:05Oakland leads Milwaukee 1-0, I think, at the end of 2.
- 2:08:08And time has been called because of rain in Milwaukee.
- 2:08:14Texas and Boston are tied up 6-6 at the end of 7.
- 2:08:19Okay, Bill.
- 2:08:20All right, Frank, here's Bobby Mercer against the left-hander, Clint, and Tom Bergmeyer.
- 2:08:25Yankees ahead 3-1 here in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:08:27They have runners at first and third and no outs.
- 2:08:30Mattie Lewitt first, Roy White down at third.
- 2:08:34White, with a bit of daring running, got to third.
- 2:08:37Here's a stretch and the pitch to Mercer.
- 2:08:39Down low on the knees, a called strike.
- 2:08:45One strike count on Mercer, who's 0-3.
- 2:08:47Bobby's flying to left field.
- 2:08:49He's bounced to the first baseman on assistant, and he's struck out.
- 2:08:53Jack McKeon going with a lot of left-handers.
- 2:08:55After the Yankees got rid of his right-hander's starter, Ken Wright, the 0-1 pitch.
- 2:08:59Plung onto the deep right center field.
- 2:09:09Listen to that crowd as the Yankees make their first run.
- 2:09:30All right, quite a crowd reaction.
- 2:09:32Bobby Mercer hitting on into the right center field bleachers.
- 2:09:36Mercer does not hit too many balls into the bleachers.
- 2:09:39He'll hit the most his own runs from the bulls back toward the power line.
- 2:09:44And the Yankees lead a trick-through on that was Bobby's fourth home run of the year.
- 2:09:48Here's Greg Nettles breaking balls, taking it outside.
- 2:09:54Yankees 6, Royals 1 here in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:09:59Still no outs.
- 2:10:02Burke Barr winds a 1-0 pitch.
- 2:10:06Plung on and foul straight back.
- 2:10:08Nettles with a thick cut.
- 2:10:27Here's the 1-1 pitch to Nettles.
- 2:10:29Plucked up in the shallow center field.
- 2:10:32The second baseman for Locke was out.
- 2:10:33He's called off by the center field.
- 2:10:34The Otis and Amos Otis one-handed.
- 2:10:37This is the New York Yankee baseball network.
- 2:10:39Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:10:42Hope you're enjoying the game.
- 2:10:43This is Bill Edwardson, the host of Breakfast with Bill.

- 2:11:00One out, nobody on.
- 2:11:01Here's Felipe Alou.
- 2:11:03Pitch is inside.
- 2:11:04Backs Felipe off.
- 2:11:05Yankees ahead 6-1.
- 2:11:07Picked up three quick one runs this inning on Pauly Mercer's fourth home run of the year into the right center field seats.
- 2:11:14The next pitch is hit on the ground to first.
- 2:11:16Mayberry has it.
- 2:11:18Takes his time.
- 2:11:19Goes to first base.
- 2:11:20Two is out, two outs.
- 2:11:22Felipe Alou bounces out.
- 2:11:24Mayberry unassisted.
- 2:11:26Here's Thurman to the catcher.
- 2:11:33Yankees have picked up four runs so far this inning.
- 2:11:40Munson is 0-2.
- 2:11:41He's got a 10-game hitting streak going and he'd like to keep it going.
- 2:11:44He's batting at 371.
- 2:11:47He bounced back to the pitch or he'd bounce a third and walk.
- 2:11:52Bergmar looking in.
- 2:11:54The left-hander's over the head and the pitch.
- 2:11:56Swung on, chop, foul, back behind the plate.
- 2:12:02Bobby Mercer is tied now in home runs with Greg Nettles.
- 2:12:05They both have four.
- 2:12:07Mercer goes ahead in RBIs.
- 2:12:09He's got 14 now.
- 2:12:11Nettles has 12.
- 2:12:13Munson has 10.
- 2:12:14The 0-1 pitch, outside ball one, one-on-one.
- 2:12:26Yankees really mashing the ball this inning.
- 2:12:28A double by Clark.
- 2:12:29An infield hit by White.
- 2:12:31RBI single by Alou.
- 2:12:34And then a three-run home run over the auxiliary scoreboard out in right-center field by Bobby Mercer.
- 2:12:42Yankees are ahead 6-1.
- 2:12:46Here's the 1-1 pitch to Munson.
- 2:12:48Outside ball two.
- 2:12:49It's 2-1.
- 2:12:53On deck, Estella-Renos-Centus.
- 2:12:57They play Munson to hit to the opposite field.
- 2:13:02The left fielder's straight away.
- 2:13:05The 2-1 pitch.
- 2:13:06Outside ball three, 3-1.
- 2:13:09Left fielder, Panela, straight away.
- 2:13:10The right fielder's near the line and in.
- 2:13:13And Amos Otis, the center fielder, is three or four steps over toward right center.
- 2:13:18So there's a big gap between Panela and Otis.
- 2:13:22That's out in left center field.
- 2:13:24Here's the 3-1 pitch to Munson.
- 2:13:26Swung on.
- 2:13:27It's fouled on the right side.
- 2:13:29It'll be in the mezzanine.
- 2:13:30It goes over the upper deck.
- 2:13:34And it's 3-2.
- 2:13:38Big inning here for the Yankees in the seventh.
- 2:13:40They picked up four runs.
- 2:13:43They go with the two they had in the second.
- 2:13:46And they lead 6-1.
- 2:13:47Six runs on seven hits.
- 2:13:50Here's the payoff pitch to Munson.
- 2:13:51Swung on.
- 2:13:52Fouled off.
- 2:13:53Straight back out of play.
- 2:13:57They continue to pitch Munson outside.
- 2:14:03Looking at the scoreboard, Chicago leads Baltimore 1-0 there in the second inning.
- 2:14:07Boston 6, Texas 3, they're in the sixth inning.
- 2:14:11And in the fourth inning, California 4, Detroit nothing.
- 2:14:15Lead of Minnesota both-both.
- 2:14:17Payoff pitch to Munson.
- 2:14:18Swung on.
- 2:14:19Fall back once again to the mezzanine.
- 2:14:25In the national league, Houston and Philadelphia.
- 2:14:34They're 3-0, Houston with Philly batting in the last of the night.
- 2:14:42Payoff pitch to Munson.
- 2:14:43Swung on.
- 2:14:44Hit on the ground.
- 2:14:45The whole Potech's got it.
- 2:14:46The short stop with the long throw.
- 2:14:47It's in the dirt and past the first baseman.
- 2:14:50So Munson will be given second base as a fan grabs that ball as it got back by the screen.
- 2:14:59So give Munson a base hit.
- 2:15:01An infield hit.
- 2:15:02He got that ball and the whole Potech had to go all the way over there, couldn't throw him out.
- 2:15:06The throw was in the dirt.
- 2:15:07Now they're going to call Munson back.
- 2:15:10Munson gets an infield hit.
- 2:15:12And they're going to call him back to first base.
- 2:15:15The first base umpire, Joe Brakeman, originally sent Munson to second because a fan touched the ball.
- 2:15:21Then Bill Haller, the home plate umpire, went down there.
- 2:15:24I guess Haller felt that if the ball had stayed in play, John Mayberry would have held Munson in first base.
- 2:15:30Well, Thurman's being called back to first.
- 2:15:32But he does get his hitting streak or keeps his hitting streak intact.
- 2:15:38He has now hit in 11 straight games.
- 2:15:43Same play, Bill, earlier this season.
- 2:15:46Throw over there and they did allow the runner to go to second.
- 2:15:48But then the umpire said they felt that the ball would have bounced into the seats even if a spectator had not touched it.
- 2:15:53This one obviously would not have.
- 2:15:56The fan reached well over the railing and the ball would not have bounced into the seats.
- 2:16:00So I think it has to be a fair call on the part of Bill Haller.
- 2:16:04All right, here's Salarino's sentencing.
- 2:16:06The stretch by Bergmeier.
- 2:16:08The pitch is a fastball on the outside corner to call strike.
- 2:16:11John Callison was the Yankees' original designated hitter.
- 2:16:15He only batted once.
- 2:16:16The sentenances went in when McKeon, the skipper of the Royals, switched to a left-hander.
- 2:16:21And Salarino walked and he's flied out.
- 2:16:23So he's 0 for 1.
- 2:16:25The next pitch is swung on and missed the ball with two strikes.
- 2:16:29Kenny Wright started the ball game for the Royals.
- 2:16:31He only went one, two-thirds innings.
- 2:16:33Gave up two runs.
- 2:16:35Mike Jackson came on in the second, pitched well.
- 2:16:37He went five and a third.
- 2:16:39And he was responsible for three runs.
- 2:16:42The other run is charged to Tom Bergmeier, the guy who's in there now.
- 2:16:47Here's the 0-2 Pista Sanchez outside at 1-2.
- 2:16:52When Mercer hit his home run off Bergmeier, the two runners on, White and Alou,
- 2:16:59the responsibility of Mike Jackson.
- 2:17:04Well, the Yankees are ahead 6-1 here in the bottom of the seventh, two outs, months to the first.
- 2:17:08The next pitch is outside, ball two, 2-2.
- 2:17:16They're playing Sanchez straight away.
- 2:17:20Well, the White Sox have gone ahead of Baltimore.
- 2:17:22Dick Allen has hit two home runs in that ball game, his fourth and fifth of the year.
- 2:17:28The next pitch, swung on by Sanchez, and he strikes out.
- 2:17:33But the Yankees have a big inning.
- 2:17:35They pick up four runs on five hits, including a big three-run over by Bobby Mercer.
- 2:17:43They left the man on base.
- 2:17:45And at the end of seventh, the Yankees sixth, the Kansas City Royals, one.
- 2:17:51We're all familiar with those TV commercials that picture a youngster shouting,
- 2:17:55Daddy, Daddy, only one cavity.
- 2:17:58With all due respect to toothpaste commercials, a healthy set of teeth is due in part to proper care
- 2:18:04and regular dental visits for checkups.
- 2:18:07Blue Shield, recognizing the fact that all too often regular dental care is often related to the income of the family,
- 2:18:13has designed a dental program which everyone can afford.
- 2:18:17At this time, it's only available to employee groups of 50 or more.
- 2:18:21Blue Shield's dental program encourages regular checkups to prevent tooth decay.
- 2:18:25The whole emphasis is on preventive care.
- 2:18:28However, the program is not designed for children alone.
- 2:18:31It covers the whole family.
- 2:18:33If you're employed where there are 50 or more and don't have a dental program,
- 2:18:37ask your boss to look into it.
- 2:18:39Blue Shield believes a healthy smile is everyone's right.
- 2:18:43Don't you agree?
- 2:18:44If you're an employer of 50 or more and want to know more about this plan,
- 2:18:48contact the Dental Services Department at Blue Shield in Albany.
- 2:18:56Well, Phil Rossitto is away from us for a couple of days,
- 2:18:59but he'll be rejoining us in Chicago Friday night for the first game of the upcoming Yankee road trip
- 2:19:06as the Yankees go to Chicago and then on to the Twin Cities,
- 2:19:10Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota to take on the twins in their backyard.
- 2:19:15Right now, the Yankees enjoying a five-run lead, six to one, and we go to the eighth inning.
- 2:19:21All right, Frank, and a win by the Yankees here.
- 2:19:25These scores keep coming in the way they've been coming in.
- 2:19:28The Yankees can be tied for first place.
- 2:19:31The ball game is over.
- 2:19:34Baltimore is losing to Chicago.
- 2:19:36Dick Allen is at two home runs, and the White Sox lead at least two to one
- 2:19:40in the fourth inning with Chicago batting.
- 2:19:43Dick Allen hit his fourth in the first and his fifth in the fourth.
- 2:19:48Here's Amos Otis, and he fouls the first pitch off into the upper deck off Sparky Lyle.
- 2:19:53So the White Sox lead Baltimore at least two to one with the White Sox still batting
- 2:19:57in the last half of the fourth inning in their ball game in Chicago.
- 2:20:03California's sixth, Detroit one, with Detroit batting in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:20:09The Tigers are playing an even 500 baseball, and Oakland leads Milwaukee one-nothing after two.
- 2:20:16And Milwaukee's in third place with a 9-9 record, so the Yankees can jump over everybody.
- 2:20:21Time has been called in that ball game because of rain in Milwaukee.
- 2:20:26There are balls in in the air, right field, Matty Lewis way back, way back, up near the wall.
- 2:20:31He's got it right in front of the scoreboard in deep right center field.
- 2:20:36So Otis drives Matty all the way back to the board there, all in his long fly.
- 2:20:40There's one away here in the eighth.
- 2:20:45And in that fourth inning, the White Sox picked up a couple more runs,
- 2:20:48and they lead Baltimore four to one after four full innings of play.
- 2:20:53Play hard against Fisher.
- 2:20:55Couple home runs in that ball game by Dick Allen, his fourth and fifth of the year.
- 2:21:01The Yankees, chances of getting in the first place, improving with each inning.
- 2:21:06Here's John Mayberry, Lyle over the head, pumps and deals.
- 2:21:09Sidearm fastball is too low.
- 2:21:13Mayberry batting at 231, but he leads the American League and runs batted in with 20.
- 2:21:19He's picked up one in this ball game. He's one for two.
- 2:21:22Lyle over the head, the one-oh pitch.
- 2:21:25Swung on and missed it one-and-one.
- 2:21:27Mayberry, John, hits the ball all the way out of the stadium.
- 2:21:32On deck is Ed Kirkpatrick, who are in the top of the eighth.
- 2:21:35The Yankees ahead, six to one.
- 2:21:38They play Mayberry to pull.
- 2:21:40Lyle's ready.
- 2:21:41The one-one pitch, breaking ball, checks wing, bounce foul out in front of the play.
- 2:21:45As it kicked up, it hit Mayberry on the arm.
- 2:21:48So it's a ball and two strikes.
- 2:21:51They really play Mayberry to pull.
- 2:21:53Malu back behind the bag at first.
- 2:21:55Horace Clark on the grass at second.
- 2:21:58Michael, about five steps from first base on the third, from second base on the shortstop side.
- 2:22:04And Nettle playing wide at third.
- 2:22:07Here's the one-two pitch to Mayberry.
- 2:22:09Inside it's two and two.
- 2:22:13Maddie and Lue playing back up on the track in right field in front of the 344-foot side.
- 2:22:20Horace is straight away at center.
- 2:22:21So is White and left.
- 2:22:23Two-two pitch.
- 2:22:24Cold strike three got him looking.
- 2:22:27Spocky Lyle got the outside corner with a hard fastball, tailing away from the left-hander.
- 2:22:36And they're two outs.
- 2:22:38And here's Ed Kirkpatrick, the right fielder.
- 2:22:42And the way Lyle has pitched this ball game, it might be a bigger game for him than the actual win.
- 2:22:48Lyle has given up three home runs in his previous starts.
- 2:22:51He's making his fifth appearance.
- 2:22:53He's only given up three home runs in 59 appearances last year.
- 2:22:56So it looks like Lyle is back.
- 2:22:58Breaking ball is too low.
- 2:23:01And with Lyle pitching the way he pitched last year and with Lindy McDaniel pitching this year as well as he's pitched,
- 2:23:07it'll be a great boon to the Yankee chances in the American League each.
- 2:23:12Six pitches outside.
- 2:23:14It's two balls and no strikes.
- 2:23:17Yankees ahead by a score of 6-1.
- 2:23:19They have six runs on eight hits.
- 2:23:21The Kansas City Royals one run on six hits.
- 2:23:25That's six on my mind.
- 2:23:28Two-oh pitch coming down to Kirkpatrick.
- 2:23:30Cold strike two and one.
- 2:23:37And he's been up about three times.
- 2:23:38He's one for three.
- 2:23:40Bounce into a forced out, bounce into a double-plant single.
- 2:23:43The next pitch is too low. It's three and one.
- 2:23:48Two outs, nobody on.
- 2:23:49You're at the top of the eighth.
- 2:23:54Yankees up by five.
- 2:23:55They lead six to one.
- 2:24:00There's the wind by Lyle.
- 2:24:01The pitch flung on and missed.
- 2:24:03Stuck him out.
- 2:24:06Up is three and two.
- 2:24:14Full count on Kirkpatrick.
- 2:24:16Did he say he didn't go around on that?
- 2:24:19That counts three and two.
- 2:24:22Here's the payoff pitch.
- 2:24:23That's a strikeout.
- 2:24:25If Kirkpatrick waves a double.
- 2:24:27So Lyle strikes out the last two men, he says.
- 2:24:32He's got to tell me, we're in Kirkpatrick, and that's it for the Royals.
- 2:24:35Three up and three down.
- 2:24:37In the middle of the eighth, Yankee six, the Royals one.
- 2:24:43Miss Lena Horne.
- 2:24:51Shaffer is the one day to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:24:59Shaffer, there's your duck bait even when your first is done.
- 2:25:07The most rewarding thing in this man's world for people who are having fun.
- 2:25:16Shaffer is the one day to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:25:27Shaffer is the one day to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:25:45The final game on this home stand will be played here tomorrow night at 730.
- 2:25:48The Yankees and the KC Royals and the Yankees with newfound power.
- 2:25:53Banging away, Bill.
- 2:25:54All right, here's J. Michael against Burt Beier, and six fouls the first pitch off,
- 2:25:58great backing in the seats.
- 2:26:01We're in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Yankees ahead six to one.
- 2:26:04It'll be Michael, Clark, and White in that order.
- 2:26:07Yankees picked up two runs in the second inning.
- 2:26:09The Royals came back with one in the third.
- 2:26:12The Yankees picked up four in the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:26:14Change up, line drive, face hit left field by Michael.
- 2:26:18Six around first base, but he'll hold there as Fenella gets the ball back into the infield.
- 2:26:23So Michael leads off the eighth by singling sharply to left field.
- 2:26:27He's now a two for four in the ball game with an RBI, and he's also a four to run.
- 2:26:31Here's Horace Clark.
- 2:26:33Clark is two for three.
- 2:26:37He's got a stolen base and RBI, and also he's four to run.
- 2:26:45House batting a right-handed against the left-handed Tom Bergmeier.
- 2:26:53Mercer's three-run home run last inning, the big hit so far for the Yankees.
- 2:26:59Pitch to Clark, outside of ball.
- 2:27:10Michael leads from first.
- 2:27:12Mayberry holds it, the stretch by Bergmeier.
- 2:27:15The 1-0 pitch foul straight back into the upper deck by the Hawks, and it's 1-1.
- 2:27:24Well, Henry Aaron just hit his 680th lifetime home run.
- 2:27:30That's his second tonight.
- 2:27:32It's numbers 6-7-9 and 6-8-0.
- 2:27:37The 1-1 pitch to Clark.
- 2:27:38Swung on, fouled off into the upper deck on the right side.
- 2:27:421-2.
- 2:27:45So Aaron moves within 34 of Babe Ruth.
- 2:27:55That's his seventh home run this year.
- 2:27:58Here's a stretch by Bergmeier.
- 2:28:00He checks Michael at first.
- 2:28:01The pitch, in there in the right center field.
- 2:28:04Davis Otis is there, and he one-hands it for the first out.
- 2:28:08Michael goes back to first base.
- 2:28:11One away.
- 2:28:12Here's Roy White, the left fielder.
- 2:28:19White's two for three.
- 2:28:25A single to right field, then field it, and he got on in there.
- 2:28:27He's also a walk.
- 2:28:29Yankees six.
- 2:28:30Royals one.
- 2:28:31Bottom of the eighth, one out, Michael at first base.
- 2:28:34Maddie Lou, leading on the on-deck circle.
- 2:28:37Here's a pitch to White.
- 2:28:39And Bergmeier misses outside with a fastball.
- 2:28:43Royals with the infield back looking for two here.
- 2:28:46They're down by five.
- 2:28:49Yankees ahead, six to one.
- 2:28:52White batting at 195.
- 2:28:54The next pitch.
- 2:28:55Swung on, fouled straight back.
- 2:29:00It's one and one.
- 2:29:12Here's a stretch.
- 2:29:14The one-one pitch to White.
- 2:29:16Curveball it in the air to right center.
- 2:29:18Out there is Fitzpatrick.
- 2:29:19He's under.
- 2:29:20He's got it.
- 2:29:21Kirkpatrick's over there and under.
- 2:29:22He's got it.
- 2:29:23He's got two outs.
- 2:29:30Here's Maddie Lou.
- 2:29:36Michael is still at first base.
- 2:29:38The Lou is one for two.
- 2:29:39He's walked White.
- 2:29:40Pop to the first base.
- 2:29:43Joel Ben-Aranda with a single left field.
- 2:29:45That was a key single.
- 2:29:46Maddie got back on the second in the seventh inning.
- 2:29:50Yankees that runner is at the second and first.
- 2:29:55And Alou looped the ball in the left center, scoring one of them.
- 2:29:58The first pitch from Bergmeier finds the outside corner.
- 2:30:01It's a strike.
- 2:30:05Maddie hitting from a closed stance.
- 2:30:07Chokes way up on the bat.
- 2:30:09Bergmeier comes to the belt.
- 2:30:10The O-one pitch.
- 2:30:11Breaking ball popped up behind the plate.
- 2:30:14Healy's back.
- 2:30:15He's huffing back and he's got it.
- 2:30:18So Alou fouls out to Fran Healy back by the screen.
- 2:30:22And that's it for the Yankees.
- 2:30:24Here in the eighth, no runs on one hit and they leave a base runner.
- 2:30:27After eight full innings of play, the Yankees lead the Royals by a score of six to one.
- 2:30:33Where is the ball?
- 2:30:36By Motorola.
- 2:30:38Hi Yankee fans.
- 2:30:39This is Bill Edwardson.
- 2:30:40And Jack Hoppe here enjoying a show on a beautiful Quasar portable color TV by Motorola.

- 2:31:05Now these are only a few of the reasons to buy a Quasar portable color TV by Motorola.
- 2:31:10Especially, Bill, when it can be yours for only $369.95.
- 2:31:16By Motorola.
- 2:31:20Motorola television products are available at Frasier's radio and TV service 14 Van Rensselaer
- 2:31:25Road in Albany, phone 489-8214.
- 2:31:28At Jack's TV service, RD4 Box 15, Mechanicville, phone 371-7420.
- 2:31:35And at the TV clinic, 2557 Hamburg Street in Schenectady, phone 355-0812.
- 2:31:43For the KC Royals.
- 2:31:46And as we go along here, Bill, let me cut in once a while with a few scores.
- 2:31:50Catch everybody up to date.
- 2:31:52Right now, California leads Detroit 6 to 1.
- 2:31:54They're in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 2:31:56Bill Singer for the Angels, Woody Flan and Tommy Timmerman.
- 2:32:01And now, Laren Legro pitching for Detroit.
- 2:32:03Cleveland and Minnesota get rained out.
- 2:32:08Chicago 4, Baltimore 1 at the end of 4.
- 2:32:11A couple of home runs by Dick Allen and Ed Herman has also homered for Chicago.
- 2:32:15So they're long balling Quasar tonight.
- 2:32:17And Eddie Fisher, the knuckle baller, trying to make them hold up.
- 2:32:21All right, Frank, here's Lou Pennella leading off for the Royals.
- 2:32:24We're at the top of the ninth. Yankees ahead 6 to 1.
- 2:32:27Lyle throws a breaking ball that's too high.
- 2:32:31Pennella's 0 for 3. He's bounced out twice and he's bounced into a fielder's choice.
- 2:32:37That's right-handed. Hits from a closed stance.
- 2:32:39Lyle over the head. The pitch.
- 2:32:41Swung on at this point and won.
- 2:32:44Milwaukee 3, Oakland 2 in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 2:32:48Gene Tennesse is homered there for Oakland.
- 2:32:50And that Texas-Boston game is in the eighth inning tied 6 to 6 at Fenway Park.
- 2:32:57Lyle looking in at Munson.
- 2:33:01That's down to Wyne. Pumps and deals.
- 2:33:03Foul back. A ball and two strikes.
- 2:33:06Quickly in the National League. The Phillies are batting in the bottom half of the ninth inning with Houston leading 3-0.
- 2:33:12Let's see. It's Atlanta 5, Montreal 4 in the bottom half of the seventh inning with, as Bill told you,
- 2:33:17Henry Aaron hitting two home runs in that ballgame.
- 2:33:21And the rest of the National League games later starts.
- 2:33:24All right, Frank. Pennella waits. Lyle's ready.
- 2:33:27The 1-2 pitch to Pennella.
- 2:33:29Change up is popped up. Gene Michael, the shortstop ball.
- 2:33:33Over there in the bag. He's under it. He's got it.
- 2:33:36That was a new pitch from Lyle. It's like a change or a knuckleball.
- 2:33:39This floated up there and Pennella got out front, got under it, and popped it up.
- 2:33:43So there's one away here in the ninth and here's Hal McCrae, the designated hitter.
- 2:33:48McCrae's 2 for 3 in the ballgame. Double the left, bounce the third, and single the right.
- 2:33:53Yankees ahead 6-1 here in the top of the ninth. One out, nobody on.
- 2:33:57It's Pacquiao looking for his first save of the year.
- 2:34:01In relief of Steve Klein who started.
- 2:34:04The breaking ball is a called strike.
- 2:34:07They play McCrae straight away.
- 2:34:11He's a right-handed hitter.
- 2:34:14Lyle's ready. The 0-1 pitch.
- 2:34:17Fastball inside 1-1.
- 2:34:261-1 count on McCrae.
- 2:34:29And the pitch. Fastball dribbin' deep to left wheel.
- 2:34:32White's there though. Now he comes in and he's got it.

- 2:34:46McCrae hits the ball hard all evening.
- 2:34:49Got robbed there by White. Two outs now. Here's Paul Shaw, the third baseman.

- 2:36:03What do you think a disaster sounds like?
- 2:36:07If you live in a city, maybe it's the sound of sirens racing to a fire.
- 2:36:12But you don't have to live in a city to know the terrible sound of a fire.
- 2:36:16You don't have to live in the country to know the sound of a tornado.
- 2:36:20Floods can strike anywhere too, and sometimes with very little warning.
- 2:36:25At Red Cross, all of these sounds and many more mean disaster.
- 2:36:30The sound of disaster is people. People homeless.
- 2:36:35All our clothing, furniture, everything is gone.
- 2:36:39We're just thankful we got our kids out of there safe.
- 2:36:42People who must start building their lives all over again.
- 2:36:46I look at everything I have. I've been working for many years.
- 2:36:49At Red Cross, we think people are the most important sound.
- 2:36:53We're there to help when families need help most.
- 2:36:57Because Americans care about their neighbors, Red Cross is there to help.
