- 0:03Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Well, yesterday was a great day in
- 0:12New York City because, quite simply put, this was the sound of the
- 0:18marathon, the first Sunday November, as it always is here at Central Park.
- 0:29Yeah, if I knew that, that's right. We were at the
- 0:40marathon yesterday afternoon and it was exciting. You know. I always enjoy the
- 0:45ones that finish a little longer than the faster runners. You know why,
- 0:49because those are the winners. Those are the stories that we will take with
- 0:53us, and those are the stories. The ones who completed twenty six point
- 0:59two miles will have a story to tell forever that they completed a marathon in
- 1:03the greatest city in the world known as New York City. And did I
- 1:08want to take Gaby and I to the finish line. Yeah, but it
- 1:11was crowded and it was just cool to see all the orange capes of successful
- 1:17marathon runners with their medals. Who did it. They accomplished something not many
- 1:23of us kind of accomplish. They went twenty six point two miles and believe
- 1:27me, someone who's run five of those miles in Central Park, I know
- 1:32it's a little bit all around the park, but Still it's a very hilly
- 1:34area toward the finish line, up and down and around Central Park. But
- 1:46imagine doing that for twenty six point two miles. It's a feat with the
- 1:52feet. I guess you say it's a feat with your feet. Right.
- 1:57Well, anyway, I got the chance to interview. You know, I
- 2:00want to get more, but I kind of was a little shy about it.
- 2:05But this guy I mentioned on my Instagram, Richard from Hope Story,
- 2:13Well he gave us a great interview after the marathon, and after he was
- 2:19all well and fed, and you know, he was able to regroup a
- 2:22little bit after twenty six point two miles. It was Richard's first ever marathon,
- 2:28and I got the chance to talk to him with Gabby outside All Stars
- 2:31Bar and Grill. You know, the New York City Marathon. I've got
- 2:37Richard from Dallas, Yeah, Alito, Texas. Yeah, first ever marathon
- 2:42though, right complained And here in New York. What was it? What
- 2:45was it like? It was the most incredible thing I've ever done and also
- 2:50the hardest thing I've ever done. So the high between all the different boroughs
- 2:54was indescribable, and I will say those hills are no joke, So get
- 3:00buckle up. Mile twenty three is uphill and you got you got a really
- 3:05dig deep Central Park also was pretty hilly. But I woke out. Did
- 3:08you say, all right, I got this? Oh god, I'm sort
- 3:10of have some doubts about mile eighteen, so I would say I thought I
- 3:15had it until eighteen and then it was when my own is that first people
- 3:19that may not know my eighteen yes, uh, eighteen out of twenty six?
- 3:23Yeah, like it's up whatsout the bridge or where? Oh you know,
- 3:25I'm not I don't know. Is my first will never okay, my
- 3:29first time I ever want to give to a marathon? So how'd you train
- 3:31for this? I did the hal higdon Uh, there's a there's different programs
- 3:37so it's okay. It was like the intermediate one. You said a foot
- 3:39level and you it's an eighteen league planned. Okay, So I recommend it
- 3:44for anybody who wants to ever try run a marathon. There's a couch to
- 3:47marathon, all different plans do it. Now you're from you're from Texas.
- 3:52You having a lot of support team up here though? Is bringing you on
- 3:54or we're all we're all here? Yep? Oh very cool. Yep,
- 3:58well, congratulations, thank you. And one last thing when you hit Central
- 4:01Park, there's gotta be a thrill of getting to tabern on the green right,
- 4:04I mean that whole run up to the finish line. Yes, yeah,
- 4:08yeah, so getting there was it was tough. Toy willsy saw you
- 4:11want you get into Central Park? I would say one tip I would I
- 4:15would help any runner to have your name printed on your jersey. I'm showing
- 4:19him no, but it's on change. People will yell your name. People
- 4:25like me need that and that and the whole way is so loud and encouraging.
- 4:30Did you run for anybody special this year? Or be rid for Hope
- 4:32story? It's a non profit, so they really target the ifty downs.
- 4:36They actually were paving away for us, buying the scenes to get through the
- 4:40traffic up uh on the route so that we know about them all. They're
- 4:43great and so they are community for for downcing for parents who have a new
- 4:47downstage of diagnosis that give them a network, give them resources and to give
- 4:51them hope. Well congratulations, yeah you brother? All right? How cool
- 4:58is that? Man? We got a change to talk to a first time
- 5:00marathon runner in our own city of New York and he's from Texas, and
- 5:06of course that whole area is now celebrating a Rangers World series. But I
- 5:12gotta say the whole thing about the finish line. And you'll find out more
- 5:15about hope story when I tag them in the description below. Personally seeing these
- 5:21runners, seeing how running is a religion in New York City, seeing how
- 5:27running is a community. I mean the throngs of people, not only the
- 5:30runners, but the supporters of the runners, the families of the runners.
- 5:33That is what it's about. And it reminded me about my dad was always
- 5:38on the route with me. Somehow he'd meet me at the third mile,
- 5:42the fifth mile, those five mile races. Somehow he'd meet me as I
- 5:46hit the corners of the different routes, you know, I remember the Abbot
- 5:48five k. He'd be running with me up to sixth Avenue and then we'd
- 5:53turned down turn up sixth and go to fifty seventh and then go through the
- 5:57park up to the finish line. I mean, those things stay with you.
- 6:00But that finish line was not always fun, and believe or not,
- 6:04I was kind of shy back in the day real fast, and that was
- 6:13when I was three years old, and I kind of collapsed at the finish
- 6:15line because I don't know what to do with all those cheering. But here
- 6:19we are, many years later, watching those who make an effort every year
- 6:28at the New York City Marathon, even first timers of course, and they
- 6:33do it and they don't care how fast or slow they go. They just
- 6:39are excited to do it. And that's pretty damn cool. And there's a
- 6:46lot of emotion. There's a lot of tiers I saw on New York and
- 6:48NECO, some engagement going on, like people popping the question behind the behind
- 6:55the finish line after the runner raced. It's so cool what goes on on
- 7:00a marathon Sunday. So if you ever want an uplift, if you ever
- 7:04want to watch and get motivation, come to New York on marathon Sunday.
- 7:10It'll be worth the trip. It'll be worth the while, and you'll thoroughly
- 7:14enjoy it. I know you will, because even as bystanders, you can't
- 7:18help but get moved by those who are about to complete a journey of a
- 7:26lifetime aka twenty six two twenty six point two miles at the New York City
- 7:31Marathon. Is there anything like it in the greatest city in the world.
- 7:41That's up for you to decide, but I'll let the cheering do the talking
- 7:45the rest of the way. Have a great night here on the Alex Garrett
- 7:48podcast Network, one of
